you that the Knicks still own the offseason, you know,
I was just thinking about this this week into next
week right with the games today and Spain winning today.

This week, we had two World Cup quarter final games
in the middle of the day, in the middle of
the week, right the United States games. Our last game
was at five o'clock in the afternoon on the West Coast.
Next week, both semifinal games are at noon West Coast
time three pm on Tuesday and Wednesday. Why are we
doing this? What's going on? What are we doing? Like?

Why are we suddenly suddenly making this schedule? So, oh yeah,
we're gonna have it so it's easier for everybody else
to see this across the globe. Like, I don't understand
why we're doing this. I didn't, didn't we We spend
a lot of money for the World Cup. Don't you
want to you want to take care of your American
viewers first, because this is where the event is, you know,
I don't know when the Olympics are set that they go, oh, hey,

the United States is and is and Canada is playing
in the in the gold medal game in hockey. We're
gonna make sure that thing gets a really really good
time slots that people having a wake up, Like I know,
it's not anywhere that's.

Not done it's a big globe, and the assumption was
there was no chance in hell the United States was
advancing this far in the tournament.
Speaker 1 (02:16):
Oh no, I don't know anything. I just mean for everything, right,
like I mean, don't you. I mean it's the The
semi final games are huge. Spain in France is huge.
What wind up being England or Norway and and and
Argentina is huge? And we're having them in the middle
of the day, yes week.

What are we doing because seventy two thousand people are
still gonna show up at the stadium and it's the
global audience. Your prime time in Europe, your prime time
in Scandinavia, your prime time in all the other soccer
nations of the world. Yeah, I'm gonna have the the Yacko,

help to come on man, like, Hey, we're inconvenienced every
single Olympics, every single World Cup because we are furthest
away from every other nation and everybody else is closest
to the timeframe than we everybody I think even in Australia,
they're closer and they're like forty five hours ahead of

us or behind us, whatever. But we're always inconvenient. Now
here's our event. Okay, we got big games, got now
we're gonna put them on three o'clock in the afternoon. Oh,
who was it?

Convenience that gold medal game was in prime time viewing
for me because I'm sitting here on on air on
Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
Babe, what what time was that? My CARMT that was Yeah,
what's time? What time was that? Five? Yeah?

Okay, but I was awake, I was alert, and I
was checked up about it. Man. But we have a choice.
It's about programming choices. Versus your governing body is located
in France and they're they're gonna do what they they

they need for themselves.

I really I hope the rest of the present it's
what we're doing. I hope they really appreciate it. Well.

I mean, look, it doesn't matter for you. You just
watched the match over lunch.

Well, no, for me. I look out for everybody, my Carmen,
the people I know, and I know that hope alive.
I know the one I hear goals scored. I look
to listen to my out my window, and I hear
a lot of people cheering going. Man, no one's at work,
no one has worked.

Well, they're all.

Working from home.

I take the positive spin that they've decided and elected
and whatever business that they operate within, uh, they've allowed
them to continue the work from home. I just did
the air quotes for the cameras in studio and for
all your minds at home.

Just just appreciate that. I just hope they appreciate what
we're doing. I just really do. Oh.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
I appreciate it too, though. I mean, like, look, there
were what nearly seventy three thousand people at at La
Stadium today.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
Well, of course people are gonna go to the game,
but it's about the It's about the audience people watching
at home, like you, you're coming to the World Cup,
I'm by, I'm going to the game. I am. I
am locked in because I'm going to the game. But
people want to watch. It's like, oh, when's the game on? Nude? Nude? Okay, well,
look I like it. I like it being on at noon.
You like it being on at noon, that's great. A
lot of people want to watch these games, and now
(07:04):
they're on at work or they're on they can't because
what why can't Why can't these games beyond why can't
we have the United States on in a primetime window.
We're spending spending a lot of money on these games.
We can't be on at a primetime.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
With West Coast lunch window. We can't the West Coast
lunch It was the lunch window. Hey coast lunch window. Yeah,
Come and get your your food from the food trunck
that's camped outside. Make sure they've got all their licenses
and notices and agreements with the the folks that inspect
for cleanliness and all, and then take.

Whatever that you ordered.

A salad euros whatever it might be, and go back
to the office, or load up your phone while you
sit outside and enjoy some sunshine for other folks. They
were going to happy hour. I mean it works out
really well. Three o'clock happy hour on a Friday.

I just got in. I just hope they appreciate they
appreciate this favor that we were doing for them. Happy
this look at that's what they do. We all want.
A big punch was thrown in the NBA to I'm sorry.
A big punch was thrown by Victor Wembinyama as he
has agreed to a five year, two hundred and fifty
two million maximum Rookie scale contract extension. ESPN first reporting
(08:17):
this on Friday, Wemby posting on social media spurs family,
I'm here to stay whatever it takes. Now, why is
this a big deal? Well, of course Wenby's gonna get
this this money. He's who the league is gonna be
built around to the next decade. He could have taken
a super maximum, now super maximum. He could have taken
the supermax that would have escalated this contract another fifty
(08:40):
plus million dollars, but he took a little bit less
to save the Spurs roughly fifty million over the next
five years, so you know, he could have taken that. Now, okay,
that's really ten million a year, but okay, he's still
doing something good, right. He could have taken the Supermax,
but he's taking a little bit less because he wants
me able to have money out to build people around,
to build around they can come back and play alongside him.
(09:02):
He says, I learned a lot of lessons this year,
and this, you know, with everything we did getting to
the finals, so you know, this is something he feels
very strongly about and doing the right thing right because
hopefully one of them, because he says, I learned a lesson,
but I don't know what they are yet. That's what
he said right after they got eliminated by the Knicks.
But I don't know they're yet. And maybe the lesson is, oh,
(09:23):
taking less money so we can have a few extra
million dollars to bring in that guy that hey right
now projects to be maybe our seventh guy or our
eighth guy. But maybe by the time the playoffs started
he gets hot. He's a guy that we need off
the bench, and we have him because we're able to
give him money. Maybe this money is going to allow
us to get our Landry Shammitt or our Mitchell Robinson
(09:43):
or someone like that. This is the Knicks continuing to
show everybody this is how you build a team. And this, Honestly, Mike,
this is more shocking to me than the Knicks winning
the title. Because the Knicks winning the title, you look
at the talent they put out there, and eventually talent
rises up. Look, it's the best starting five in the NBA,
(10:04):
top to bottom. When you're saying one through five, they
don't have the best player in the NBA. They got
a top five player in Jalen Brunson, but top to bottom,
this is the best starting five in the NBA. So
you want to think they can get to a point
where they can win. They've been title contenders. But the
fact that the Knicks, Okay, the Knicks, the New York Knicks.
Think about the twenty some odd years they had leading
(10:25):
up to getting Jalen Brunson, right, this was Isaiah Thomas
coming in and mismanaging the team, Phil Jackson coming in
and completely mismanaging the team, not being able to go
get free agents. Madison Square Garden was not a destination
despite the fact that it's most famous arena in the world.
Nobody wanted to go play there. But then Leon Rose
(10:46):
shows up and all of a sudden, the Knicks are
the destination. They got there. Top three guys off the
bench outside of Mitchell Robinson resigned for the money that
the Celtics spent to take Mitchell Robinson away from the Knicks.
The Knicks are now showing you that their front office.
This is the blueprint now for this year and maybe
next in the NBA. If you can get your star
(11:08):
players who take a little less money, if you can
get them to buy in, if you can sell them
on this is a great atmosphere. Look at what can
happen for you if you can win. Guys aren't gonna
just take less money to say I think we can win.
But look at when the Knicks can say, hey, you
take less money. Look what winning means. These guys are
all legends now, these guys are all making money outside
of the NBA, outside of the Knicks. Again, Landry Shaman's
(11:31):
got a mural outside of MSG after the threes against
the Cavs, Like you have players going, oh, this is
what it means to win in New York and yes,
I will take less money to make this happen. And
now the Knicks, the Knicks front office is what everybody
in the NBA is aspiring to be. I never thought
we would get that day. I mean, this is twenty
(11:52):
some odd years of absolute mismanagement every single year, and
now the Knicks front office, this is the model in
the NBA. Huh, what a time to be alive.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
Well, I tell you, before free agency started, this is
where you were gonna go. Every every star, every would
be superstar was gonna be asked. And then it becomes
the question of does it create a standoff or do
you have a guy that can see the vision? Because
with a guy like Victor wembin Yam, he's going, all right,
I get two fifty, I've also got whatever other endorsements,
whatever else. And this is the first of what I
(12:23):
hope to be will be many many contracts in that
three hundred to five hundred million dollars varietal, right, I
mean leaving fifty million on the table.
Speaker 4 (12:33):
Cool.
Speaker 3 (12:33):
Some teams will do that, you know, or some players
will exercise that. Others are gonna do the lebron of Okay,
I'll do it, but what are you gonna give me
like what like what, well, how are you gonna use
the money?
Speaker 1 (12:46):
Right?
Speaker 3 (12:47):
That's the story from the Lebron camp from a couple
of weeks ago. Now we've got chirps out of Summer
League of folks associated with the PA that are kind
of salty as what they did with the second apron
and everything else, and they're asking for an unraveling of
that already. So you got that swirling in the background, now, Smith,
But yes, your Nicks predicted they would ruin the NBA,
(13:10):
and this is this is how we can manifest itself
in this case.
Speaker 4 (13:14):
Good for the Spurs.
Speaker 3 (13:15):
We'll see what the next superstar is that bristles and
we start hearing from Shaan's how yeah, I was asked
to take that fifty million dollars less. I'll see you
at hell find that fifty million dollars somewhere else.
Speaker 1 (13:27):
But I mean, look, not everybody's gonna do it, sure,
but the Knicks are showing you that if you get
the if you can buy in, look what we can accomplish.
Because I mean, yeah, everybody's getting paid. But don't you
want to win? Don't you want to be a legend
like the Knicks? Nick show, you can be a legend
if you win this title here not every place is
New York. And you know, are you gonna be the

absolute Josh Hart if he won the championship with the
Spurs or with Oklahoma City, maybe you guy that won
a championship. Now, Josh Hart is a mortal, right, Ogan
Nunobi is immortal. Jalen Brunson is like seven layers of
a mortal. He has like his he's got like his
uh uh his what he call it, his his, his
voldemort all all the what you call it the hort crush,
(14:09):
the hor crux is like you got like seven or
eight of those you can't find. He's still gonna be
that guy. He's still that powerful, right Like, this is
what they have shown what you can accomplish. And Jalen
Brunston leading the way taking all of that less money,
This is what we can do. Karl Anthony Town's gonna
be up for contract extension. You know he's gonna buy
in and they're gonna be able to do that and
(14:29):
and and keep this thing going. I mean, the Knicks
being the model franchisey, I think I never thought I'd
say that. Next winning the title, when they brought in Brunson,
they built I said, okay, we have a chance that
they have a chance of that. Right, we had a
pretty good team here. But you know, obviously there's some
things gonna happen. But the Knicks being in the model
franchise and and and strategies in the front office that
(14:50):
other teams are emulating. Never, never, in a million years,
never thought I would see took a couple.
Speaker 3 (14:55):
Of years of buy in in patience, but again, looking
at the economic realities that teams are going to come
to grips with here, and we've seen it a little
bit in free agency. You've seen it a little bit
with the trades of all right, what is the the
boogeyman of the first and second apron? And what does
it mean for the decisions we're making on contracts now
(15:16):
as we look at what the team is and long
term commitments to players and so, yeah, if you're going
to go down a road of long term planning, yeah,
that's what you need to emulate because you need some
money left on the table for other players. Again, you know,
(15:37):
knowing that the punitive nature of the second apron and
the restrictions that will put on you for how you
rebuild if things go wrong. You know, say a guy
breaks his wrist and can't play and you suddenly plummet
in the standings, which will not happen to the Knicks.
I just do it to see if I could get
(15:57):
a visceral reaction happens.
Speaker 1 (15:58):
I'm gonna get every time me do that. I grab
my keys in my hand. I look at my sharpest one.
I go, this would just go right along the paneling
right along.
Speaker 3 (16:07):
Yeah. Yeah, But you get My point is this is
to be emulated. And now it's the curiosity of how
many teams can find their A or B player to
get on board with it. And clearly the Spurs have that.
Now Wemby's looking to be immortal highlander wise on a

on a much larger scale because Spurs, as we all know,
I have a nice history of winning.

the nineties. He's the most recognizable player in Redskins commander's history.

never win their division? And it took us until the

Well, I was going to ask you about that, Terry
and Arnold, like, this guy is facing what could be
life in prison and not only has has the the
uh the Florida judge ruled he doesn't need to wear
a GPS because he could work out with other teams.
Other teams are contacting him about working out. Apparently already
worked out for team. I'm like, what is the NFL do?
What are teams doing?

This is this is Why does that tell you a lot?
Brendan Soresby can't get in the supplemental draft. Terry and
Arnold had no problem. Somebody, Yeah, we don't worry. See
this is where I'm telling you gambling scares them more
than anything else. But on Terry and Arnold, I don't
know what, Like if that was a GM, I would

really step carefully, like do you have to go to
the team president or owner and say, hey, look I
want to work this guy out just so we know
what's going on, just in case something opens up. But
and and if I was the owner, I'd probably say, yeah,
we might want to wait on this one, you know,
like we can we can put this one off for

a while, Like this is the desperation for for guys
that can cover this is this is what it's about.
It's like, oh, we have a chance to get a
free player, you know, on a controlled contract or you
know whatever. It's going to be. Yeah, people are going
to look at this one and they're going to take
a long look at a player like this and see

what the legal process is about. But if if he's
hung up at all, like kidnapping and like he was
definitely on the live stream watching it, like this is
as Florida thing as there happens in the NFL. I
just gotta say that, you know, like this is this
has every bit of a Florida guy on it. I

just that's what I love about it. But I also
love the Nick Saban letter batching for him. And as
I was reading the letter, I was thinking, Yeah, this
sort of like Urban Meyer when he used to have
Aaron Hernandez over to the house. Oh he's a fine
young man. We love this kid. He'll turn around, don't worry.

on the Bears to win the Super Bowl. Yeah.

I think I would just get across the state line.
I don't think I need to go all the way
to Vegas. But does that counterbalance meeting the pumps?

you saw that, you know, the ESPN story where Seth
Wickershrom followed Sean Payton for a period of time head coaches,
one of the greatest.

I sent Seth a message last night. It was so great.
Speaker 1 (26:38):
Oh, okay, so great? All right, okay, So well, first
of all, that's what message did you send him?
Speaker 6 (26:46):
I just thought the about great. Well, there's a book
idea I've always had. Yeah, I don't want to get
too deep into this, but I don't know if you
guys ever read the book forty eight Minutes by Bob
Ryan and Terry Pluto, where Pluto and Ryan are following
a night and that it's a night in the life
of the NBA where Terry Pluto was covering the Cleveland
Cavaliers and Ryan was covering the Celtics, and so they
(27:07):
did a breakdown of the Larry Bird Celtics against the
the Ron Harper Brad Doherty Cleveland Cavaliers when they were
in sort of the early days of developing. It's a
really great look at how the NBA works and how
it functions. And so I've always wanted to do a
football book book like that and whether but it's hard
(27:28):
to get coaches to agree to that kind of access.
And then but Sean Payton was one of the few
guys who I got to agree to it. But it
was trying to find some another coach willing to do
it and sort of break down an NFL game in
book form, like what is the thinking going on here?
What are you anticipating? All the factors that go into
a game? And I thought it was genius and what
(27:50):
I thought that Seth did captured perfectly in their story.
It's just it's it's Seth. I mean, Seth's got He's
one of the greatest writers in America for sports writing today,
him and Ray Thompson and a handful of others. But
you know, Seth was able to get inside the mindset,
the thinking, the approach of a team going into a game.
(28:16):
And I've always just wanted to do that, sort of
amplify it and do it from both ends and then
describe the game, because again I wanted to do sort
of forty eight minutes. And so what I did, what
I sent to Seth is this is just it's awesome,
you know, Like the story is awesome. That's long it takes,
you know, it's a it's a good Yeah, you gotta
have some time proved out and you've got to focus
(28:36):
on this. But I thought it was just a great
look into the mindset of meetings where coaches think, how
they describe things, you know, the anxiety and the angst
that goes into what they do. I again, it's just
brilliant work by Seth Walichristian.

I like that. I like that idea. Okay, I was
going to coach.
Speaker 6 (29:01):
The issues you got to get Coaches are so secretive
that they just don't they don't trust and they don't
trust that you're gonna keep stuff secret for a long
period of time. And that's always been the problem with this.
So it's trying to find two coaches who are will
and participate. So there you go.
Speaker 1 (29:22):
All right, all right, now here's where I was gonna say,
I was channeling you, because I'm gonna give The big
thing coming out of this article was that a couple
of years ago, Sean Payton said he had the idea
of offering the head coaching job to Bill Belichick, letting
him be the head coach for as long as it
took him to break Don Shula's record. Then he would
step down and Sean Payton would run the team again.
(29:42):
He would be the offensive coordinator while Belichick would get
the wins. And I thought about you because my first
thought was in your voice, I'm gonna try to do
in your voice and go and here you would say,
you would say, well, how much did Sean Peyton hate
Don Shula to make this something that he wanted to do?
Nothing from you? Nothing from you on that.
Speaker 6 (30:07):
No, I wouldn't think about it that Wayne. Yeah, No,
it was Look, I give you credit for for, you know,
searching into my deep and dark past because Donchella is
part of that dark past, because I had to cover
the end of that the end of that era. Unfortunately. No,
(30:31):
I think that that's I give him credit that mostly
that's a nod to Belichick, who he is, he's so
close to. I don't look at that one as a negative,
like you know, yeah, you know, I don't take that
as sticking it to Shula, although I can. Yeah, I'm
sure there's some hatred there because Sula obviously didn't like Belichick.
(30:53):
Especially at the end, and made the mistake of not
hiring Belichick when he was a young coach. So that's
on Schulo's but I know there's no love lost between
those two. But to me, Peyton, that's more of a
nod to fellow Check and just how much he admires
And because those guys used to practice against each other,
(31:14):
you know, during training camp, and they would spend a
lot of time together talking about stuff, and you know,
I think that, you know, Peyton certainly thinks of himself
on the genius level of Belichick. I wouldn't necessarily altogether
agree with that, but yeah, he's not far removed, certainly
from from beble Check. That's how I would hear it.

That's that's that's a really serious answer to something that
should have been a lot funnier.

in the middle of the day, in the middle of
the week, right the United States games. Our last game
was at five o'clock in the afternoon on the West Coast.
Next week, both semifinal games are at noon West Coast
time three pm on Tuesday and Wednesday. Why are we
doing this? What's going on? What are we doing? Like?

Why are we suddenly suddenly making this schedule? So, oh yeah,
we're gonna have it so it's easier for everybody else
to see this across the globe. Like, I don't understand
why we're doing this. I didn't, didn't we We spend
a lot of money for the World Cup. Don't you
want to you want to take care of your American
viewers first, because this is where the event is, you know,
I don't know when the Olympics are set that they go, oh, hey,

the United States is and is and Canada is playing
in the in the gold medal game in hockey. We're
gonna make sure that thing gets a really really good
time slots that people having a wake up, Like I know,
it's not anywhere that's.

Not done it's a big globe, and the assumption was
there was no chance in hell the United States was
advancing this far in the tournament.

What wind up being England or Norway and and and
Argentina is huge? And we're having them in the middle

still gonna show up at the stadium and it's the
global audience. Your prime time in Europe, your prime time
in Scandinavia, your prime time in all the other soccer

was checked up about it. Man. But we have a choice.

a lot of people cheering going. Man, no one's at work,
no one has worked.

I take the positive spin that they've decided and elected
and whatever business that they operate within, uh, they've allowed
them to continue the work from home. I just did

Just just appreciate that. I just hope they appreciate what
we're doing. I just really do. Oh.

I appreciate it too, though. I mean, like, look, there
were what nearly seventy three thousand people at at La
Stadium today.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
Well, of course people are gonna go to the game,
but it's about the It's about the audience people watching
at home, like you, you're coming to the World Cup,
I'm by, I'm going to the game. I am. I
am locked in because I'm going to the game. But
people want to watch. It's like, oh, when's the game on? Nude? Nude? Okay, well,
look I like it. I like it being on at noon.
You like it being on at noon, that's great. A
lot of people want to watch these games, and now
(07:04):
they're on at work or they're on they can't because
what why can't Why can't these games beyond why can't
we have the United States on in a primetime window.
We're spending spending a lot of money on these games.
We can't be on at a primetime.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
With West Coast lunch window. We can't the West Coast
lunch It was the lunch window. Hey coast lunch window. Yeah,
Come and get your your food from the food trunck
that's camped outside. Make sure they've got all their licenses
and notices and agreements with the the folks that inspect
for cleanliness and all, and then take.

A salad euros whatever it might be, and go back
to the office, or load up your phone while you
sit outside and enjoy some sunshine for other folks. They
were going to happy hour. I mean it works out

I just got in. I just hope they appreciate they
appreciate this favor that we were doing for them. Happy
this look at that's what they do. We all want.
A big punch was thrown in the NBA to I'm sorry.
A big punch was thrown by Victor Wembinyama as he
has agreed to a five year, two hundred and fifty
two million maximum Rookie scale contract extension. ESPN first reporting
(08:17):
this on Friday, Wemby posting on social media spurs family,
I'm here to stay whatever it takes. Now, why is
this a big deal? Well, of course Wenby's gonna get
this this money. He's who the league is gonna be
built around to the next decade. He could have taken
a super maximum, now super maximum. He could have taken
the supermax that would have escalated this contract another fifty
(08:40):
plus million dollars, but he took a little bit less
to save the Spurs roughly fifty million over the next
five years, so you know, he could have taken that. Now, okay,
that's really ten million a year, but okay, he's still
doing something good, right. He could have taken the Supermax,
but he's taking a little bit less because he wants
me able to have money out to build people around,
to build around they can come back and play alongside him.
(09:02):
He says, I learned a lot of lessons this year,
and this, you know, with everything we did getting to
the finals, so you know, this is something he feels
very strongly about and doing the right thing right because
hopefully one of them, because he says, I learned a lesson,
but I don't know what they are yet. That's what
he said right after they got eliminated by the Knicks.
But I don't know they're yet. And maybe the lesson is, oh,
(09:23):
taking less money so we can have a few extra
million dollars to bring in that guy that hey right
now projects to be maybe our seventh guy or our
eighth guy. But maybe by the time the playoffs started
he gets hot. He's a guy that we need off
the bench, and we have him because we're able to
give him money. Maybe this money is going to allow
us to get our Landry Shammitt or our Mitchell Robinson
(09:43):
or someone like that. This is the Knicks continuing to
show everybody this is how you build a team. And this, Honestly, Mike,
this is more shocking to me than the Knicks winning
the title. Because the Knicks winning the title, you look
at the talent they put out there, and eventually talent
rises up. Look, it's the best starting five in the NBA,
(10:04):
top to bottom. When you're saying one through five, they
don't have the best player in the NBA. They got
a top five player in Jalen Brunson, but top to bottom,
this is the best starting five in the NBA. So
you want to think they can get to a point
where they can win. They've been title contenders. But the
fact that the Knicks, Okay, the Knicks, the New York Knicks.
Think about the twenty some odd years they had leading
(10:25):
up to getting Jalen Brunson, right, this was Isaiah Thomas
coming in and mismanaging the team, Phil Jackson coming in
and completely mismanaging the team, not being able to go
get free agents. Madison Square Garden was not a destination
despite the fact that it's most famous arena in the world.
Nobody wanted to go play there. But then Leon Rose
(10:46):
shows up and all of a sudden, the Knicks are
the destination. They got there. Top three guys off the
bench outside of Mitchell Robinson resigned for the money that
the Celtics spent to take Mitchell Robinson away from the Knicks.
The Knicks are now showing you that their front office.
This is the blueprint now for this year and maybe
next in the NBA. If you can get your star
(11:08):
players who take a little less money, if you can
get them to buy in, if you can sell them
on this is a great atmosphere. Look at what can
happen for you if you can win. Guys aren't gonna
just take less money to say I think we can win.
But look at when the Knicks can say, hey, you
take less money. Look what winning means. These guys are
all legends now, these guys are all making money outside
of the NBA, outside of the Knicks. Again, Landry Shaman's
(11:31):
got a mural outside of MSG after the threes against
the Cavs, Like you have players going, oh, this is
what it means to win in New York and yes,
I will take less money to make this happen. And
now the Knicks, the Knicks front office is what everybody
in the NBA is aspiring to be. I never thought
we would get that day. I mean, this is twenty
(11:52):
some odd years of absolute mismanagement every single year, and
now the Knicks front office, this is the model in
the NBA. Huh, what a time to be alive.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
Well, I tell you, before free agency started, this is
where you were gonna go. Every every star, every would
be superstar was gonna be asked. And then it becomes
the question of does it create a standoff or do
you have a guy that can see the vision? Because
with a guy like Victor wembin Yam, he's going, all right,
I get two fifty, I've also got whatever other endorsements,
whatever else. And this is the first of what I
(12:23):
hope to be will be many many contracts in that
three hundred to five hundred million dollars varietal, right, I
mean leaving fifty million on the table.
Speaker 4 (12:33):
Cool.
Speaker 3 (12:33):
Some teams will do that, you know, or some players
will exercise that. Others are gonna do the lebron of Okay,
I'll do it, but what are you gonna give me
like what like what, well, how are you gonna use
the money?
Speaker 1 (12:46):

That's the story from the Lebron camp from a couple
of weeks ago. Now we've got chirps out of Summer
League of folks associated with the PA that are kind
of salty as what they did with the second apron
and everything else, and they're asking for an unraveling of
that already. So you got that swirling in the background, now, Smith,
But yes, your Nicks predicted they would ruin the NBA,
(13:10):
and this is this is how we can manifest itself
in this case.

We'll see what the next superstar is that bristles and
we start hearing from Shaan's how yeah, I was asked
to take that fifty million dollars less. I'll see you

But I mean, look, not everybody's gonna do it, sure,
but the Knicks are showing you that if you get

what they have shown what you can accomplish. And Jalen
Brunston leading the way taking all of that less money,
This is what we can do. Karl Anthony Town's gonna
be up for contract extension. You know he's gonna buy
in and they're gonna be able to do that and

and and keep this thing going. I mean, the Knicks
being the model franchisey, I think I never thought I'd
say that. Next winning the title, when they brought in Brunson,
they built I said, okay, we have a chance that
they have a chance of that. Right, we had a
pretty good team here. But you know, obviously there's some
things gonna happen. But the Knicks being in the model
franchise and and and strategies in the front office that

other teams are emulating. Never, never, in a million years,
never thought I would see took a couple.

Of years of buy in in patience, but again, looking
at the economic realities that teams are going to come
to grips with here, and we've seen it a little
bit in free agency. You've seen it a little bit
with the trades of all right, what is the the
boogeyman of the first and second apron? And what does
it mean for the decisions we're making on contracts now

as we look at what the team is and long
term commitments to players and so, yeah, if you're going
to go down a road of long term planning, yeah,
that's what you need to emulate because you need some
money left on the table for other players. Again, you know,
(15:37):
knowing that the punitive nature of the second apron and
the restrictions that will put on you for how you
rebuild if things go wrong. You know, say a guy
breaks his wrist and can't play and you suddenly plummet
in the standings, which will not happen to the Knicks.
I just do it to see if I could get

a visceral reaction happens.

Brendan Soresby can't get in the supplemental draft. Terry and
Arnold had no problem. Somebody, Yeah, we don't worry. See
this is where I'm telling you gambling scares them more
than anything else. But on Terry and Arnold, I don't
know what, Like if that was a GM, I would

really step carefully, like do you have to go to
the team president or owner and say, hey, look I
want to work this guy out just so we know
what's going on, just in case something opens up. But
and and if I was the owner, I'd probably say, yeah,
we might want to wait on this one, you know,
like we can we can put this one off for

a while, Like this is the desperation for for guys
that can cover this is this is what it's about.
It's like, oh, we have a chance to get a
free player, you know, on a controlled contract or you
know whatever. It's going to be. Yeah, people are going
to look at this one and they're going to take
a long look at a player like this and see

what the legal process is about. But if if he's
hung up at all, like kidnapping and like he was
definitely on the live stream watching it, like this is
as Florida thing as there happens in the NFL. I
just gotta say that, you know, like this is this
has every bit of a Florida guy on it. I

just that's what I love about it. But I also
love the Nick Saban letter batching for him. And as
I was reading the letter, I was thinking, Yeah, this
sort of like Urban Meyer when he used to have
Aaron Hernandez over to the house. Oh he's a fine
young man. We love this kid. He'll turn around, don't worry.

you saw that, you know, the ESPN story where Seth
Wickershrom followed Sean Payton for a period of time head coaches,
one of the greatest.

I sent Seth a message last night. It was so great.
Speaker 1 (26:38):
Oh, okay, so great? All right, okay, So well, first
of all, that's what message did you send him?
Speaker 6 (26:46):
I just thought the about great. Well, there's a book
idea I've always had. Yeah, I don't want to get
too deep into this, but I don't know if you
guys ever read the book forty eight Minutes by Bob
Ryan and Terry Pluto, where Pluto and Ryan are following
a night and that it's a night in the life
of the NBA where Terry Pluto was covering the Cleveland
Cavaliers and Ryan was covering the Celtics, and so they
(27:07):
did a breakdown of the Larry Bird Celtics against the
the Ron Harper Brad Doherty Cleveland Cavaliers when they were
in sort of the early days of developing. It's a
really great look at how the NBA works and how
it functions. And so I've always wanted to do a
football book book like that and whether but it's hard
(27:28):
to get coaches to agree to that kind of access.
And then but Sean Payton was one of the few
guys who I got to agree to it. But it
was trying to find some another coach willing to do
it and sort of break down an NFL game in
book form, like what is the thinking going on here?
What are you anticipating? All the factors that go into
a game? And I thought it was genius and what
(27:50):
I thought that Seth did captured perfectly in their story.
It's just it's it's Seth. I mean, Seth's got He's
one of the greatest writers in America for sports writing today,
him and Ray Thompson and a handful of others. But
you know, Seth was able to get inside the mindset,
the thinking, the approach of a team going into a game.
(28:16):
And I've always just wanted to do that, sort of
amplify it and do it from both ends and then
describe the game, because again I wanted to do sort
of forty eight minutes. And so what I did, what
I sent to Seth is this is just it's awesome,
you know, Like the story is awesome. That's long it takes,
you know, it's a it's a good Yeah, you gotta
have some time proved out and you've got to focus
(28:36):
on this. But I thought it was just a great
look into the mindset of meetings where coaches think, how
they describe things, you know, the anxiety and the angst
that goes into what they do. I again, it's just
brilliant work by Seth Walichristian.
Speaker 1 (28:54):
All Right, are you gonna do a Jets game? Okay? Good?
I like that. I like that idea. Okay, I was
going to coach.
Speaker 6 (29:01):
The issues you got to get Coaches are so secretive
that they just don't they don't trust and they don't
trust that you're gonna keep stuff secret for a long
period of time. And that's always been the problem with this.
So it's trying to find two coaches who are will
and participate. So there you go.
Speaker 1 (29:22):
All right, all right, now here's where I was gonna say,
I was channeling you, because I'm gonna give The big
thing coming out of this article was that a couple
of years ago, Sean Payton said he had the idea
of offering the head coaching job to Bill Belichick, letting
him be the head coach for as long as it
took him to break Don Shula's record. Then he would
step down and Sean Payton would run the team again.
(29:42):
He would be the offensive coordinator while Belichick would get
the wins. And I thought about you because my first
thought was in your voice, I'm gonna try to do
in your voice and go and here you would say,
you would say, well, how much did Sean Peyton hate
Don Shula to make this something that he wanted to do?
Nothing from you? Nothing from you on that.
Speaker 6 (30:07):
No, I wouldn't think about it that Wayne. Yeah, No,
it was Look, I give you credit for for, you know,
searching into my deep and dark past because Donchella is
part of that dark past, because I had to cover
the end of that the end of that era. Unfortunately. No,
(30:31):
I think that that's I give him credit that mostly
that's a nod to Belichick, who he is, he's so
close to. I don't look at that one as a negative,
like you know, yeah, you know, I don't take that
as sticking it to Shula, although I can. Yeah, I'm
sure there's some hatred there because Sula obviously didn't like Belichick.
(30:53):
Especially at the end, and made the mistake of not
hiring Belichick when he was a young coach. So that's
on Schulo's but I know there's no love lost between
those two. But to me, Peyton, that's more of a
nod to fellow Check and just how much he admires
And because those guys used to practice against each other,
(31:14):
you know, during training camp, and they would spend a
lot of time together talking about stuff, and you know,
I think that, you know, Peyton certainly thinks of himself
on the genius level of Belichick. I wouldn't necessarily altogether
agree with that, but yeah, he's not far removed, certainly
from from beble Check. That's how I would hear it.
(31:35):
That's that's that's a really serious answer to something that
should have been a lot funnier.
