Speaker 2 (01:04):
Oh, right.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
Rick Buecher stops by for everything Clippers penalty oriented. It
has been some kind of NBA day and Rick Buecher
is going to join us. It is a must listen today.
The Clippers story, all the big quarterback stories in the NFL, like, okay,
we're getting juiced up, man. Regular season's a week away.
(01:26):
We're getting that Dante Culpepper momentum thing going right now.
Come on now. And you know, the thing is, I
don't know if people are doing this on purpose on
social media, but so many people I've seen, ah, NFL
starts tomorrow. And like, just, hey, I want the attention,
the clicks. I want people to call me an idiot.
Cause I don't know that the game is next week.
Like I think everybody knows when the NFL is starting.
(01:47):
Like I think people know that they know it's not
next week. They know it didn't start to start starting tonight. No, no,
but you know, people want engagement and it'll track. Even
if it's 5,000 people telling you you're a dope. I
don't mind if I look like an idiot as long
as I get clicks. Well, wow. I say that that's
a lot of sports talk. That is a lot of
our industry at this point. Hmm. What's the most outrageous
(02:09):
thing I can say about this or someone else in
our media?
Speaker 3 (02:13):
Right?
Speaker 1 (02:14):
I mean, that's a lot of the noise these days.
After today, I'm really worried about the Eagles. Okay. So,
Jalen Hurts did an interview that is, by turn, odd, awkward...
(02:35):
and telling about where things sit with the Eagles going
into this season. Jalen Hurts' interview with GQ Magazine, and
it's on camera. You're going to hear the interview. You're
going to hear the big two-and-a-half-minute rip that's been making
the rounds today about his career, the season. But, of course,
the crux of it, the most interesting stuff is, hey,
(02:56):
your relationship with A.J. Brown, who they were so close
and they're godfathers to each other's kids. Now, A.J.
Speaker 4 (03:04):
Brown.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
finds his way out, couldn't make it work in Philadelphia anymore.
Are they friends? Are they not? Do people like Jalen
Hurts on the team? Like all these crazy things going on.
And again, the Eagles love to exist in controversy. They
love to sit in that hot tub of controversy. The
entire team fitting around a big hot, we can get
(03:25):
one more in. Yeah, we love controversy. We're going to
bathe in controversy. His interview today with GQ, it's awkward
on so many many levels, right? You're going to hear
it right here. We're going to stop down and listen
to it as it goes. It is really, really weird.
So this is a two and a half minute rip
in which the, the interviewer is asking Jalen Hurts, situation
(03:51):
with the Eagles when it comes to A.J. Brown. He's
trying to get answers from him, right? So here's the
beginning of the interview, or here's the beginning of the
part we're going to get to where they talk about, hey, okay,
and now your situation with A.J. Brown. So let's start
it here. Alex Teichert, let's go. Let's hear it.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
One thing that will be very different is A.J. Brown traded.
We talked about it before. That will make, I imagine,
the team feel very different and the offense feel very different.
Speaker 5 (04:16):
You imagine?
Speaker 2 (04:16):
Yeah. I guess I'm asking.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
All right, stop right there. Stop right there. So Zach
Barron's the host. He says, I imagine that'll make the
offense more difficult, different. You imagine? Like, that's Jalen Hurts'
response is, you imagine? Good! It's a terrible question. Good
for him. You imagine? I mean, you imagine? Guy that
was our number one receiver, averaging double-digit targets a game?
(04:41):
You think? I imagine that'll make things worse. You imagine?
That sounds like when a kid is giving an excuse
to his parents about why he did bad in a test.
So I imagine I'll wind up failing that class. You imagine?
You imagine that's why? You imagine? That's it.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
All right.
Speaker 1 (04:57):
So let's go back. Tight shirt from the beginning. We'll
hear it again here all the way through because there
is a incredible, weird drop the mic moment that Jalen
Hurts has early in this interview. You got to hear good.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
One thing that will be very different is easy. Brown traded.
We talked about before that will make, I imagine the
team feel very different and the offense feel very different.
You imagine, I guess I'm asking.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (05:21):
I mean, you can't replace the greatness that we have
achieved and, you know, the presence and, A success that
he's had on the field.
Speaker 5 (05:30):
But we've got to go to work.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
What happened?
Speaker 1 (05:34):
Okay, there's got to stop right there. He says, it's
like he meant to do it on purpose because you're like,
what is that noise? He says, you know, we got
to go to work. And then he slapped his hands together.
and he looks down like he was killing a fly,
like a fly was flying in front of him. But
to actually do the clap after he's finished talking, it's like,
(05:54):
was there really a fly there? Because he starts looking
around like maybe he didn't get it, and he starts
flicking his hands around a little bit, but to go,
we got to get to work. If I'm Zach Barrett,
I'm like, what the hell is going on here, man?
What is happening? No, it's a good stopping point. It's
like he was giving a pregame speech. We got to
go to work. And maybe it's a Pavlovian thing because
he does that in pregame speeches or halftime speeches all
(06:17):
the time. So odd, man. It clicks in his own head.
I don't know that Jameis Winston would even do something
like that. Dude, come on, man. No, come on now. Tysher,
roll it back a few seconds so you hear that
again and we get to the rest of the interview.
Go ahead.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
What happened?
Speaker 1 (06:33):
Now go back. I want to hear the question. I
want to hear the answer and the clap again. I
want to hear that again.
Speaker 5 (06:37):
The success that he's had on the field. But we've
got to go to work.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
I love that. I've seen that like 12 times now,
and I can't stop laughing at it. You know, it's
almost like our old guy Vic the Brick Jacobs at AM570,
where that was just this side of him banging a gong.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
Like he said something profound and went.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (07:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (07:01):
It's almost like when David Caruso gives his one-liner in
CSI Miami. And we get to hear Roger Daltrey. Yeah!
Except you had Jalen Hurts just clapping his hands. No,
it's good. No, I like that.
Speaker 7 (07:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (07:16):
A.J. Brown, what can Brown do for you? He's not
doing anything for us anymore. Yeah! I like that. No,
that was good. All right, so let's hear the next rip,
because then he gets into actually answering the question about
his relationship with A.J. Brown.
Speaker 5 (07:35):
The success that he's had on the field. But we've
got to go to work. What happened there from your perspective?
As far as what?
Speaker 2 (07:47):
As far as him ultimately wanting to be traded and
wanting to leave the team because it seems like that's
what happened.
Speaker 6 (07:53):
I mean, it's a game where, you know, we've all
got to have a shared mission. We all got to,
you know, be in pursuit of the collective. And, you know,
it's not something I can speak on from his behalf.
But I can tell you my focus has always been
to pursue the mission.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
He gave an interview yesterday. and said he was surprised
about the amount of scrutiny that your relationship got, meaning
the friendship between you guys. Yeah. And he said, like,
we grew apart. He just, like, said it straight up.
Do you feel the same way? Do you feel like
you guys grew apart?
Speaker 6 (08:29):
Well, I think, you know, the reality of the scrutiny that,
you know, we get, it's, you know, it's what we
gave them. So there's a practical approach that I see
comes with the territory of it.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
What do you mean?
Speaker 5 (08:44):
Came with the territory of being in that light in
the beginning.
Speaker 2 (08:48):
So telling that story of a friendship.
Speaker 8 (08:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (08:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
And then it's like, if you guys aren't as close,
all of a sudden everybody's like, Hey, but you guys
were talking about it or whatever. That's what you mean? Yeah.
Speaker 5 (09:00):
There's no surprise that it was talked about.
Speaker 7 (09:02):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
Yeah. But I asked if you guys, if you felt
like you grew apart.
Speaker 5 (09:06):
Um, I mean, clearly, you know.
Speaker 1 (09:11):
So there it was. You guys grew apart, clearly. That's
a long way to get to. So you guys grew apart.
Anytime the interviewer is talking that much, you know that
it's a weird dynamic. And maybe it's Jalen Hurts didn't
feel like doing it, but it is GQ. It's not like, hey,
you're sitting down with Eagles.com. I really don't want to
(09:32):
do that today. This is something that's supposed to be, hey,
it's a big deal for you. Bigger lifestyle. This is
part of your brand and who you are and everything else.
So So it's weird that that was the that was
the kind of energy. It felt like it was a
cold room where you see the interviewers like trying to
just get answers out of them. And Jalen Hurts is
just kind of quarterback speaking along the way.
Speaker 5 (09:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (09:53):
And obviously in the media availability that Hurts has had,
he's avoided really talking about.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
It.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
It's like, hey, we're on to the next mission and whatever.
So as the interviewer, maybe he knows this, but it
sounds like he's just tiptoeing instead of asking the question. No,
it sounds like he's worried that Jalen Hurts is going
to stand up and yell at him or do something.
Speaker 4 (10:16):
Well, maybe.
Speaker 1 (10:16):
But that's what I mean. Like, hey, I just want
to ask you, you know, instead. Like, I get, like,
it feels like he was intimidated during the interview where
you would just say, where's your relationship with AJ at
right now? Well, as soon as he did that clap.
Where's that right? Yeah, well, yeah. That might have cleared
the room right there. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's like in
the movie where when the good guy goes in and
(10:38):
all of a sudden realizes he's outnumbered by the bad guys,
and the main bad guy, like the businessman guy who's
like 70, just pulls out a gun and just starts
playing with it a little bit, going, so you thought
you could walk right in here and just call me
out like this in front of everybody that I work for?
They're like, oh, no, no, no. Especially if it's truly
the older guy, because he usually does his own wet work. Yeah,
(11:01):
I feel after I see this interview... I just say
to myself, what the hell kind of season do the
Eagles have in store for them? All the questions that
we had last year. Do they like Jalen Hurts? Is
Jalen Hurts ready for the added responsibility he's going to have?
Because now the excuse of, well, A.J. Brown, your top receiver,
(11:22):
not working, how do you make it work? You're the
guy that's going to get blamed now. You're the guy
that's going to have to go downfield more. You're the
guy that's going to have to take chances and not
turn the football over. And then I see this really odd,
awkward interview, and I go... What the hell is up?
Because you've seen the Eagles the last couple of years. Like,
why are they flat? Why do they look like they
don't enjoy playing football with each other? Why does all
this on-the-field stuff... feels like it seeps off the field
(11:46):
and then it festers off the field and comes back
on the field like that's what the Eagles do they
get caught up in so much knuckleheaded stuff and yes
this is an interview this is one moment in time
for Jalen Hurts but wow it felt like he was
trying to intimidate the guy it felt like that that
he does I don't want these questions and what's supposed
to be a lifestyle type interview and I just wonder
is Jalen Hurts up for for what this year is
(12:08):
going to require from him for the Eagles to stay elite.
And I just watched the interview, and I go, I
don't know, man. I don't know about that. I feel
better about my Cowboys pick to win the NFC East
and be that dark horse Super Bowl team after seeing
this interview. I get it's an interview, but I feel
a hell of a lot better after that. Especially now
that they brought back Joe Milton. But all of that
to say, I'll side with Hertz on this. Like, if
(12:30):
you want to ask the question, ask the question. I'm
going to answer it how I'm going to answer it,
but don't dance. And every time he's trying to get
to the crux of the matter with A.J. Brown, you
can also go back to the fact that for Jalen Hurts,
this is another offensive coordinator. So the messaging and the
(12:51):
philosophy has changed year after year. Mannion this year, Petullo
last year, Kellen Moore, Brian Johnson, Shane Steichen. Go back
to Sirianni slash Steichen in 2021. And that's a lot
of different bodies. Then go back to what he did
in college as well. I mean, so there's always going
to be a different point of emphasis. And when you've
(13:12):
got an A receiver, he wants the ball. So there
might be some disconnect. Don't know if anything happened off
the field. But either way, I think for Jalen Hurts,
part of it is just like, all right, I'll answer
the question. Just ask. Just get to it. And let's
move on so we can get to the other part,
which may or may not be more fun.
Speaker 3 (13:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (13:29):
I mean, I feel way better about my Cowboys pick
after seeing it. I know you said, but Jason, it's
an interview. It's not even a game. Yeah. Watch Jalen.
You go, yeah, he's ready for the season. He's ready
to go, man. He's ready to go. Well, but I
think some of it is until you get to week one,
it's still all about last year and the breakup.
Speaker 8 (13:47):
Right.
Speaker 1 (13:48):
You got your first round pick in lemon that comes
in and whether he's healthy and ready to go or not.
Don't know. Devante Smith's there. You brought back Goddard. You've
got Barkley and the running situation in theory, your offensive
line still sound like all the components are still there.
There's the liking problem that everybody has with Sirianni that remains,
(14:08):
but you know, for Jalen hurts, I, he can't wait for,
for opening night to come fast enough, man. Like, I'm
tired of answering these questions. And clearly there's a wound there.
Whatever that schism is, it's not done. It hasn't been resolved.
So the way the interview is going at it, he's
poking at him. Like, rip the Band-Aid off and ask
(14:30):
the question. It's like, it seems like, and it feels like,
and it's a slap. Oh, no, no, you just clapped
your hands. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. So no question. I
can't ask that question. That was not, you know, where
you were snapping a belt. Hey, I'm going to make
my point. Snap. I keep thinking about, to go back
to Eight Men Out, when all the owners go into
Kennesaw Mountain Landis' office and tell them, we need a commissioner.
Because they just threw the World Series. And they're saying,
(14:52):
we're prepared to offer you a three-year contract. And he
slaps the table with a fly swatter. And he goes, lifetime.
And if anything less than that, people won't believe it.
They think they're about to do favors. And they go, well,
we thought we were. And he slaps the table again
with the fly swatter. And they're like, OK, we'll give
you the contract whenever you want. I felt like that's
what he's doing. It's not even a hammer. It's a
fly swatter. That's what it is. We're moving on. Don't
(15:14):
ask me any more questions, man, because these hands, sometimes
they'll clap on their own. Just watch out. Like, I really,
I wonder, is he ready to lead like he hasn't before? Like,
I feel so weird about the Eagles season now after this.
I know it's one interview, but wow, man. You just
want great quotes from Jerry Jones extolling the virtues of Dak.
Exit outbound to Fresca. Exit Swollen Dome. Jason Smith, Mike

Speaker 1 (16:39):
Nothing bigger today than what happened to the Clippers. Yay.
The Kawhi Leonard Tree Gate penalty has come through. Apparently
the NBA did find a lot of evidence. They ruled
the Kawhi Leonard and the Clippers circumvented the salary cap
by giving him some crazy-ass tree-planting job that did not
(17:02):
pass muster. Pablo Torre found out, won a Pulitzer. And
now we know that the Clippers will not have the
services of Steve Ballmer for a year. He has been suspended.
He has been fined $ 30 million. Other front office members
also got suspended. And they lose not one, not two,
(17:22):
not three, not four, but five first-round picks. Can the
Clippers franchise ever recover?
Speaker 7 (17:30):
Hell no.
Speaker 1 (17:31):
Joining us now on the hotline, nobody better to break
it all down than Fox Sports 1 NBA insider extraordinaire
Rick Buecher. Rick, man, big day for the Clippers. What's
your reaction to this penalty? Well, at first I was like, wow.
Speaker 3 (17:48):
The second part was, wait a minute, wasn't Kawhi Leonard involved?
I mean, he basically got a free pass. I mean,
$ 700, 000 is a slap on the wrist when it comes
to him. You know, initially I thought, oh my goodness,
this is not good for the Clippers. And then I
(18:11):
started breaking it down and comparing it to what the
Minnesota Timberwolves, one, were penalized, and two, how they, how
they responded to it. Cause at that time they were
penalized for trying to sign or signing Joe Smith to a,
a short-term deal, but negotiating a longer term deal. Once
(18:35):
they had his bird rights, something that happens pretty routinely. Now,
if you look around the league, but at the, but
at the time they smacked the Minnesota Timberwolves originally five
first round picks suspension of Glenn Taylor and a fine
of $ 3. 5 million, and it was considered, and Kevin McHale
(18:57):
suspended for a year, the GM, it was considered a
death sentence. Well, the Minnesota Timberwolves had gone to four
consecutive playoffs, lost in the first round every year, but
they'd gone to four consecutive playoffs, made the playoffs. After
that penalty came down, they went to four more playoffs,
and the last one they went to the conference finals.
(19:20):
They got two of the picks back, so it was
only three first-round picks that they lost. But essentially, it
was not a death sentence for them. And when I
broke down the money... Glenn Taylor, paying $ 3. 5 million at
that time, he was worth $ 1. 2 billion, I believe, at
(19:42):
the time. It was under two, certainly. Steve Ballmer is
worth $ 150. times, or let's put it the other way,
Glenn Taylor paying $ 3. 5 million is 15 times more punishment
(20:09):
for somebody who is worth $ 1. 2 billion than the $ 30
billion is for Ballmer. So all in all, it comes
off as being incredibly harsh. But when I look at
it overall, I just don't think it's as dramatic as
as it initially turns out to be. And as one
(20:30):
GM said to me, as we were talking about what
this came down, when it came down, he said, you know,
not penalizing Kawhi Leonard means that future players are going
to ask for all the same things.
Speaker 1 (20:44):
Exactly.
Speaker 3 (20:48):
And teams are going to look at it and say,
do you think we, well, if we, if we don't
do it, it means we're not going to get him.
Maybe we should try to get him. Let's see if
we can do it. So I just think that the
initial blush is holy cow. The NBA came down. The
Adam Silver showed his iron fist and all that. But
(21:08):
I think at the end of the day, it's just
not as drastic, draconian as the numbers would initially suggest.
Speaker 1 (21:20):
See, here's the thing, Rick, is I get you on
the money and it doesn't matter what you find a multi-billionaire.
It's not about the money. But now you have no
front office people running the team for a year. You
have everybody new that's in. However, you're going to get
around that. But still, this is the penalty. and five
first-round picks are gone. Whether they're players you are taking,
there's no assets. How do the Clippers be a destination?
(21:43):
I don't know how they get out of this in
the next five or ten years, where they become a
place where suddenly, hey, we're still going to be good.
Because is Ballmer going to go into the second apron
when he comes back? Is he going to sign all
these guys and spend all this money? I don't know
how you get out from... not having those assets and
not having leadership from a year, free agents are going
to go, yeah, I don't know that it's safe to
go to the Clippers just quite yet. It might be
(22:04):
a few years.
Speaker 3 (22:06):
See, short of, are we going to find a soundproof
booth and lock Lawrence Frank and Steve Ballmer in it?
I just, I don't know that, you know, that they
won't be somehow, some way, they can't have proxies. And
they can't find a way to still direct the team
(22:29):
or at least have somebody running it. And I think
the assistant GM is Trent Redden. And he has a
pretty good track record. Has a long-term relationship with Ty Lue.
I assume that he would be taking over. And so, again,
I just, it didn't get in the way of Glenn
Taylor being suspended for a year and Kevin McHale being
(22:51):
suspended for a year. for the Minnesota Timberwolves to do
business as usual.
Speaker 1 (22:57):
Now, they did.
Speaker 3 (22:58):
Have a player in Kevin Garnett that solved a lot
of problems, and they weren't dealing with the level of
a hard cap that we have today. So I do
think that overall, if we're talking about the Clippers vying
for a title, yeah, not having the picks with a
hard cap, the first-round picks allows you to get cheaper
(23:22):
labor than it would otherwise cost you allows it allows
you to get great talent on a, on.
Speaker 1 (23:27):
A rookie salary.
Speaker 3 (23:28):
You're that's a win and they're, and they're exempted for
that other than the fact that they are getting to
are still probably going to get to, or should get
to first round picks from Toronto. So there are, there
are ways for them to pick up picks. They just
won't be necessarily their own and where they are. So again,
(23:51):
I hear you. And as far as, you know, the
title hopes, but let's face it, they were, they went
and got Kawhi Leonard and Paul George and they were
spending a gazillion money, a gazillion dollars.
Speaker 1 (24:04):
You, you went, we got it. You just went Nixon,
Dan house and spending the monies.
Speaker 6 (24:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (24:09):
Rick Buecher, everybody. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (24:12):
Outside of the cat, like they just spent a gazillion
dollars and it didn't get them any closer to a, to,
to a championship. I think it's going to be business
as usual. The Clippers are going to clip. They're going
to disappoint, but are they going to fall to the
bottom of the well? Based on what happened with Minnesota,
I don't think it's as dire as people want to
(24:35):
predict it. I know that kind of deflates the balloon,
but I think there's a way for them to get
around it and still be competitive.
Speaker 1 (24:45):
So with Kawhi Leonard, he gets fined, well, nothing. If
you do the math, it's. 002 % of the money
that he made as a Clipper. Well, not only as
a Clipper, but like.
Speaker 3 (25:01):
I want to know how they got the $ 700, 000 figure
because based on all the outside deals that he had,
he made more off of the side hustle than.
Speaker 5 (25:14):
$ 700, 000.
Speaker 1 (25:14):
Yeah, I only went to where the money we're aware of, right?
Plus add the other 40 or 60 or 200. But
is Kawhi Leonard's run and all that it cost you,
what did it cost you? Everything. Is it the worst
run for a superstar acquisition in the history of basketball?
because not only here's the thing rick as we talked
(25:35):
about that not only did he come in they paid
him a lot of money a couple of times they
didn't win they never got close but usually when that
era ends there's a bright light and the new era
begins now he could have sunk the franchise another 10
years after this and shea gilchrist alexander and what that
cost you man.
Speaker 3 (25:56):
Yeah, but look, there's a lot that happened. Well, here's
the problem. The way you're framing it would suggest that
it's Kawhi Leonard's fault. And I don't necessarily look at
it that way. Those decisions were made by the Clippers
to trade what turned out to be a Shea Gilgis Alexander,
to get Paul George, to satisfy Kawhi Leonard, to do
(26:19):
all the things that they did. I'm going to put
that I'm going to put it on the Clippers. I mean,
quite Leonard got to go home. He made a gazillion dollars.
Speaker 1 (26:28):
He didn't play a whole lot.
Speaker 3 (26:31):
He had to pay a $ 700, 000 tax. He gets to
go back to Toronto.
Speaker 1 (26:36):
Like, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (26:38):
I think Kawhi Leonard probably played this as well.
Speaker 1 (26:40):
As you can play it. I'm not saying No, just
the era for the Clippers. Could it have gone any worse?
He foisted Paul George and Uncle Dennis on you. You
had this scandal. You had all the trade components that
you had to go to get Paul George. He got
a lot of your money, didn't play a lot, and
(27:03):
you didn't win. And now you're hamstrung for another five years,
at least in theory.
Speaker 3 (27:08):
Well, again, the hamstrung part, I mean, if the trade
goes through, They get Brandon Ingram. He's not Kawhi Leonard.
He's not a guy that I would build around. But
Brandon Ingram, you have Darius Garland there. Like, you have...
You have a couple of pieces. You have two first
round picks coming. I just, I don't think the cupboard, honestly,
(27:29):
I don't think the cupboard is bare now from based
on where the expectations were when they acquired Kawhi Leonard.
Speaker 8 (27:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (27:36):
They, they underachieved massively when they got Kawhi and they
got Paul George, it was, Oh, the Clippers are taking
over LA and that in spite of all the failings
of the Lakers, that, that never transpired. But again, I
look at, the one thing I will say is getting
(27:56):
Kawhi Leonard and the level of respectability that they had,
I think was germane to them being able to build
the Intuit Dome, to build their own arena. They did
have some cachet. And so, look, was it, did it,
(28:17):
Was it way below what the expectations were? Did it
come anywhere close to meeting expectations? Absolutely not. Is there
another instance where you paid as much as you did
for a superstar and had it fail this spectacularly? I
got to think about that. I can't, I'm not, I'm
(28:38):
not one comes to mind, but let's circle back on
that one. But are they like in a complete disastrous hole?
I'm not willing to say that.
Speaker 1 (28:50):
He's on Twitter at Rick Buecher. That is at Rick Buecher,
Fox sports, one NBA insider, the on the ball podcast
with all of the Jalen Brunson impersonators coming up soon.
Is that going to be your season kickoff podcast, Rick? Well,
of course.
Speaker 3 (29:04):
That's going to– I mean, probably the first month of
the season.
Speaker 1 (29:07):
Oh, okay. Very good. All right, nice.
Speaker 3 (29:09):
We're just going to play it on repeat. All right.
Speaker 1 (29:11):
Oh, and hey, I want to wish– wait, wait, wait.
Music down, Ty. Music down. Hey, Rick, happy anniversary. It's
been 80 days since the Knicks won the title. So
happy anniversary on that.
Speaker 3 (29:21):
Happy anniversary. Is there something behind 80 days or is
like 81 is going to be the 81st anniversary?
Speaker 1 (29:29):
No, no, no. We celebrate every day. Every day is
an anniversary. You know, the T-shirt that I got him
right after they won literally showed up on Saturday. Yeah.
that's how it goes. A lot of T-shirts to play.
Speaker 3 (29:42):
Mike, Mike, Mike, you're doing God's work right.
Speaker 1 (29:45):
Now, my friend. I try, you know. I got big shoulders, though, Rick.
I'm ready for it. Oh, boy. Rick, see you, buddy.
Speaker 3 (29:54):
May not be big enough.
Speaker 1 (29:56):
I'll get back in the gym. We'll talk to you
next week. Have a great one. See you, buddy. There
goes Rick Buecher. I can't skip leg day. No, no, no.
The world needs me. Around the world in 80 days.
Around the championship in 80 days. 80 days ago, June 13th.
What a day. Boy, June 13th. Clippers really out of future.
Didn't think there was going to be any penalties or
anything else. June 13th is a great day for the Clippers. Well,
(30:17):
I mean, we had that Adam Silver. How do we
know that you and I didn't get transported into a
different earth? Yeah, the Knicks winning the title. The Knicks
winning the title, but Adam Silver actually doing something against
the Clippers. We're in a state of unrest right now.
Adam Silver doing anything against anybody. I mean, that's the
(30:39):
big thing. It's a big state of unrest. I mean,
Galactus might come walking down the hallway. I don't know.
Time now to find out what's trending in the wide
world of sports. And someone who could wind up being
the starting shooting guard for the Clippers next year, it's
Monty Bolaños. I could do it. I could do it.
I could see you. I have a really good shot. Yeah,
like Steph, like getting free. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, yeah.
(31:00):
Coming off a screen and taking a three. Absolutely. Okay, good.
Speaker 4 (31:03):
I may have to do a couple more pump fakes
to really get rid of it.
Speaker 1 (31:06):
That's all right. You know what I'm saying?
Speaker 4 (31:07):
Because I'm... I think even if I pump fake, you
might still be able to block me.
Speaker 1 (31:12):
So I have to get away from you after a
couple pump fakes. Okay, all right.
Speaker 4 (31:15):
Do you know what I'm saying?
Speaker 1 (31:16):
Yeah, I get you. It's a lot of work.
Speaker 4 (31:18):
It's going to be a lot of work, but I
think I can do it.
Speaker 1 (31:20):
She's working on her Kim Hardaway killer crossover. You know
what I'm saying?
Speaker 4 (31:23):
I can Allen Iverson and step over anyone, though. The
minute I see someone on the floor, I'll just step
over them.
Speaker 5 (31:28):
Oh, good.
Speaker 1 (31:29):
Okay. Yeah. Like that. I know I can do. I
can see you doing that. A hundred percent. There's no
questions about it. Like, like you walk over a planted
tree and you're like, I'm stepping right over this planted tree.
That's what I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (31:41):
You get it.
Speaker 1 (31:42):
You get it. You get it. Why is the letter
K on this planted tree? Just keep going. Keep going.
Keep going. Oh, yes. News out of the NBA. In
case you missed it, I'm sure you didn't.
Speaker 4 (31:51):
But the league has stripped the Clippers of five first-round
draft picks, fined them $ 30 million for circumventing the salary cap.
They've also suspended owner Steve Ballmer for one year, suspended
president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank for six months. Kawhi
Leonard not suspended, no, but he was fined $ 700, 000. Leonard's
former business representative, Uncle Dennis Robertson, was banned from all
(32:14):
NBA-related business dealings for five years. years no bueno Clippers
in the NFL the Raiders officially named Kirk Cousins their
starting quarterback when it comes to golf.
Speaker 1 (32:25):
Tiger Woods has had his driver's.
Speaker 4 (32:27):
License suspended for five years as part of a plea
deal in his DUI case we'll head over to baseball
where the Yankees and the Angels are tied at one
apiece in Anaheim it's the top of the eighth inning
Dodgers holding on to their three nothing lead over the
Cardinals bottom of the fifth inning it was Freddie Freeman
who hit that three run shot The Tigers and the
Twins are still playing. It is the top of the
(32:47):
12th inning in Minnesota, and the Tigers.
Speaker 1 (32:50):
Are up 8-6.
Speaker 4 (32:52):
The Tigers have a man on first and second, but
they're down to their final out. The Brewers beat the
Cubs in Chicago 9-5. The Blue Jays blanked the Guardians 11-0.
And the Astros shut out the White Sox at home 2-0.
Speaker 3 (33:06):
I know.
Speaker 1 (33:07):
Back to you. You're okay. You're not a Clippers fan.
You're fine. Yeah, no. Again, the Knicks won the title.
I'm okay. You shut up. It's all that matters. Nobody
cares about the Clippers. It's a forever championship. Nobody cares
about the Clippers. Nobody cares about the Knicks. You're going
to be playing in the G League for the next
five years. That's right. Hey, and you might be able
to make the playoffs in the G League. And we
(33:28):
might get a banner.
Speaker 2 (33:29):
Oh, yeah.
Speaker 1 (33:30):
Out of the G League. G League champs. G League champs.
Speaker 2 (33:32):
That's right.
Speaker 1 (33:33):
Back to back G League champs. Back to back. In
the post-Kawhi era. And then at the bottom, who needs
first round draft picks?
Speaker 2 (33:41):
Right.
Speaker 1 (33:41):
You know, just at the bottom. Bottom would be who
needs the NBA. Blank those picks. Blank those picks. Who
needs the NBA? Who needs the NBA?
Speaker 2 (33:46):
Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 1 (33:46):
Who needs those picks?
Speaker 2 (33:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (33:48):
We want to play in front of 150 people in,
you know, El Segundo. We're happy, man. It's good. We're
going to do a team outing. I'm going to take
everybody to one of those games. We're going to do
a team outing. I like that.
Speaker 6 (33:59):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (34:00):
We're all going to be there. Deal.
Speaker 2 (34:02):
Deal.
Speaker 1 (34:03):

So quarterback news, quarterback news, quarterback news, right? We talked
about Fernando Mendoza, Jalen Hurts, and now to the status
of J.J. McCarthy. I told you a few days ago, hey,
week one, he's going to be on a different team. Now,
it could happen. We still have a long way to
(35:06):
go until week one. Still another week. Labor Day weekend
to go. Jason Lock and Forer told us a couple
nights ago, hey, I think there's going to be some activity,
especially quarterback-wise, over Labor Day weekend. Teams carrying four quarterbacks,
teams carrying three that they're not going to keep them all.
So I think you're going to see some quarterback movement. See,
your guy got named QB2 down in Miami. Yeah. Just
(35:27):
showed up, and he's already QB2. He's going to beat
the Jets at least once this year. But now we know,
at least right now, what's going to happen to everybody's
favorite quarterback who lost a quarterback derby is going to
be on another team. J.J. McCarthy, according to Vikings GM
Nolan Teasley, he said today that when the regular season
comes around, he expects McCarthy to be part of the
(35:48):
team's roster.
Speaker 7 (35:49):
J.J. McCarthy's role is to continue to develop, to improve,
and to support his teammates. And he's done an excellent
job of that from the moment that I've been here
and from my understanding since he walked through the door.
Speaker 2 (35:59):
Do you expect him to be on the roster for
week one?
Speaker 1 (36:02):
Is he the backup quarterback?
Speaker 7 (36:05):
I wouldn't really necessarily comment on depth immediately, but... Yeah,
I'm pleased that he's part of our present version of
the Minnesota Vikings and excited about his future.
Speaker 1 (36:16):
Yeah, his role is to continue to develop, to improve,
and support his teammates, as he just said. He's done
all those. Well, outside of developing, I think he's done
those things. He has not developed. Won't even say he
can be the backup quarterback. Probably going to lose that
gig to Carson Wentz. All of that stuff tells you
the Vikings, that was basically the GM saying, we're stuck here.
(36:37):
We are absolutely stuck. We can't get rid of the guy.
Nobody wants to give us what we're seeing is an
acceptable return for a guy we took early in the
first round that was supposed to be part of our future.
We feel that if we're trading him now for what's
out there, we're just going to be further embarrassed by
a guy that we decided we made the worst quarterback
(36:58):
decision in the history of the NFL, and it's just
going to get even worse for us. I got news
for you. It's worse when he's on the roster. You
take whatever you can get. He's not part of your present.
He's not part of your future. He can't even win
the backup job, man. Come on, dude. He's going to
be third string. Get whatever you can. At least he's
not a daily reminder of, boy, how bad you screwed
(37:19):
stuff up. You went from 14-3 with your quarterback of
the future that you somehow stumbled upon, but that's okay.
Nobody cares how you get a quarterback. They only care
that you get one. You got one. You could have
spun off J.J. McCarthy for probably a second-round pick after
his rookie year. He spent it all injured. Someone would
have given you a second-round pick for him. But instead,
now you're stuck. Now you're stuck with a guy you
(37:41):
can't even get. A six-round pick is what you'll take.
You should take anything and move on from McCarthy. Sometimes
you just can't have a daily reminder. of how bad
something was. And it's not his fault as far as
he's being a bad teammate, but just his presence is
a cloud that reminds everybody, we really screwed up the
quarterback position. Look at all the stuff we have had
(38:03):
to do. Who knows if we can still be any good.
We were 14 and three, man. We were 14 and
we still said, no, that's not good enough. We're getting
rid of the quarterback that proved in our system with
our coaches that he's a pro bowl quarterback. And then
we're going to let him go and we're going to
let him go win the Super Bowl. I mean, sometimes
you have to just bite the bullet and say it
(38:23):
didn't work and we have to move on. I don't
know how he's really going to still be a part
of that team when we get to week one. Talk
about it all the time. Some costs. You invested in him.
You've invested several years. It has not worked. Now, did
he look good in that game against the Bears?
Speaker 7 (38:39):
Sure.
Speaker 1 (38:39):
Are there isolated throws and instances where you're like, oh, okay,
raise an eyebrow when you're throwing to... You know, Jefferson
and those guys, that's going to help. But overall, you've
already decided by bringing in Kyler Murray, not as competition
because it was never a competition, that he was a
backup at best and he loses out to Carson Wentz.
(39:01):
And yes, he lost time due to injury. But at
this point, you know what he is. It's a reminder
of a GM you've already fired. You have the Sam
Darnold constant reminder as more and more, you know, hard knocks,
billboards are getting taken down across the land with him
with a picture of the trophy in front of him
(39:21):
that you made a decision. And for Kevin O'Connell, it's
a big one because he's gone through a bunch of quarterbacks.
That was the one that had the success, right? That
wasn't Kirk Cousins. that was the guy that had the
most success and you let him walk out the door
said ah we can do it again no uh that's
not the way it works you don't get that many
bites at the apple and at this point go get
the bucket of balls hold up a sign like your
(39:43):
wiley coyote say trade firm No, this is more where
Wile E. Coyote goes over the cliff and he holds
up the sign that says, yipe, when he realizes he's
going to fall. That's kind of what it was. He's
got one in the, yipe, that says I'm screwed with
a picture of a screw on it. I used to
like when he would be able to run on the
air until he realized he wasn't running on anything and
then he would fall. No, that's it. It's that... It's
(40:06):
that dream, dream big, and then you have that moment
of clarity and realization that fells you. I mean, just
think about it. You can't have bad— that' s why when you
break up with somebody, you don't keep the pictures of
them up on your nightstand or on your dresser drawer
or on your hope chest or whatever it is. The
hope chest. There you go. Nicely done. I just watched
(40:26):
Back to the Future today. Where's your— it' s on my hope chest.
That's why you get rid of that stuff. You can't
have daily reminders in the building everywhere you go. Yeah,
this guy didn't work. This guy didn't work. You got
to start over, man. Start over. I know it's painful.
Sean Payton's going to make you feel it every time
Bo Nix does something. You still made that bad decision
no matter what happens. Move on from it. You got
(40:49):
to do it. Exit out by the fresca. Exit swollen
on the Jason Smith Show with my best friend, Mike Harmon.
Coming up next, another big story out of the NFL.
Or is it?
