Before making the rounds. Apparently. Now I didn't see it
when it happened. You and I are doing the show,
getting ready to come on the air. Ye, But apparently
Netflix put up a graphic in the semifinals just of
the different players and it said Jordan Walker twenty twenty
six home run Derby champion. Oh, during the semi five,

this is before you got to the finals, before anything,
they put up that graphic. Hey, guess what, here's your
own derby champion. Netflix apparently knows who's going to it now,
and you know, and here's something you know for all
the different sporting events we think, oh, people know something
going on Netflix is a new beat of sports. The
fact that hey, people think Netflix could pull something like

this off, I think that speaks to the cachet that
Netflix has in the general population. They do spend a
lot of money on original program They do tons of money,
no question about too much money, but they do spend
a lot of money.

I mean, look, if you want to get your.

Original programming, if you knew I was gonna end, this's
not original program feed today. Ending is predetermined. Did the
ball really go into the seats? Simulated? Once you see
that ball disappear could go anywhere. Just have a guy
jumping up and down like he caught it. Yeah, and
you pretend you cut this ball, You pretend you get
this ball. You pretend you get this ball, you drop

It is pretty cool. As they continue to tradition. I
guess a lot of the balls that flew into the

We don't do anything without a scandal, DEWI. Everything's gotta
have a conspiracy theory, a tin boil hat because he
was constructed behind him. That's been the whole World Cup. Yeah,
and I know, Emmy cover your ears. I mean a
lot of the Argentina's talk has certainly been he's literally
covering his ears at the control desk.

But a lot of going on there.

But everything that we watch officiating is not on the
up and up. The officials, this guy's longtime family friends
with the president. This guy, I mean, there's nothing that
goes without a little Yeah, it's never on the up
and up. The guy just can't win a competition. No,
but I'd like to go back to this right. Anytime

we talk about something being fixed, right, like or your
conspiracy theory for something, I always like to ask the
question who benefits from this?

who is it that comes on and tells you convert

to gold? Okay, well it's clearly it gets you entertained.

No, I mean, hey, you know a lot of crazy
stuff happening now, convert that money to gold.

But I always say, okay, who benefits? Right?

Who's making money? Right? You can't? Well, there's still space,
so we'd still spend money on NASA, you know, putting
you know, going up in space. There's still space. Now
apparently there would be space under you know, not just
not just up, but under who benefits, right, Like who benefits?
So I look at this and I go, okay, okay,
it's fixed who benefits? If they really wanted the event

to be something that is legendary talked about forever, don't
you think it would have been fixed for Kyle Schwarber
to win in his home park and the celebration. Do
you think it would be fixed for Jordan Walker to
win it, to beat Kyle Schwarbur in the final round
and to get booed and to have Philly fans boo
once again? I don't think that. Again, who I mean?

Obviously the winner benefits, right, the winner benefits because he
gets a million dollars. Yeah, but I don't see there
being any large Major League Baseball wins. There's big money
in Jordan Walker winning over Kyle Schwarber, right, unless there's
some kind of crazy money bet in offshore counts we
don't know about. It was all I had Walker to
win from the beginning with all this, which we would

find out at some point. But I really I don't see.
I don't see who wins if it was fixed for
George Walker to win the competition. See he was plus
six fifty to plus eight hundred okay to win it,
so I mean not ridiculous, but yeah, I always like that.
Follow the money is a general rule of thumb that
we've talked about going back many generations in terms of

decision making. You know wars, Yeah, who's going to profit?
Who do you get to plunder?

Sure? Again goes back to a lot of gold.

Yeah, we're aversion to gold. We tie it all together
right there, I can melt down your kingdom. But it's
the for Jordan Walker. I mean, he makes more than
his salary. He's eligible for salary arbitration. So this might
be one of the fights for Major League Baseball saying
why is this guy still under their control as he's

in the final year of his original contract. So you
got that, but it was close late. The Philly fans
won because they got all their derision out, so they
go home happy. Do you think Philly fans would rather
go home having cheered Kyle Schwarber to victory or hey,
I'm glad it could be mad that he didn't win.

Booed happy because there hitting home runs for them all
right when when play resumes at the end of the week.
So I mean they still get both things. They got
a great show from Schwarber, and they got to boo.

So not only ben Rice, but the Results had a
very full day hit a ton of home runs, all
of those. I got the cheering emotions, I got the
hateful emotions, I got the booing emotions. Spent. I go
home and I sleep for a couple hours, and I
go to work and my pie chart, I want seventy
percent to be negative and thirty percent to be positive.
And I got that to me. I would hope for

most of us, we lay our ahead on our pillows
at night, you know, to find your wins mentality. I
went one to know today that it's seventy thirty in
terms of the positivity. But if you get more joy.
But Philly Bill, letting the hate Philly, Remember Philadelphia, Philadelphia
is different. I mean, there's a famous sketch from a comedian.

It was, you know, let the hate out. We'll we'll
leave it there. But it's the idea of for the
Philly fans.

They got it all.

I mean for Netflix, they got a great show.

Yeah, they did show.

I mean they got a great show that really is
combatants and that they got a lot of star power
I honestly expected here to be more commercials for programming
on Netflix. I really did. I was pretty disappointed. You know,
here's the top ten in Netflix this week as it
rolls across the bottom of the stix. What do I

experience when the home run derby ends?

obviously tonight for Netflix, right this event. Look, the home
run Derby is what it is, right, you can't really
make it more than it is. We've seen home runs
now for a long time. We've seen this event.

Netflix gets it for the first time, and you know,
there's people just gonna hate it because it started on Netflix,
And no, I don't like it. I don't like it
anything that changes networks, don't you know? It's the biggest

Blow to any sport.
Speaker 1 (10:27):
But overall, I mean to be honest, like this was
a huge success tonight, Like this was as good as
you could expect, and hope the home run Derby to be. Now,
it's never gonna be something that's gonna make you I'm
gonna rethink my entire life after this home run Derby. No,
but was it fun entertainment? And were the new rules
good where you're limiting the swings a little bit earlier,

but you're allowing the players to be stronger as the
derby went on, you're building towards an ending and not
just who's less tired at the end. And when you're
watching one hundred pop ups in the final lot round.

We're doing the main part where you're doing it on
a timer.

So these guys are like, well, if I get more
home runs, yeah, and all you're doing is swinging yourself out.

To your point, the new changes work great. You had
a walk off situation for a home run Derby. To
have a walk off is great. You had Schwarber in
it till the end, which was great for the home fans.
But overall the TV experience, this was really good. Like
the changes worked, and it was fine on Netflix. Like
if you're baseball, you're walking away from this taking a
big sigh relief, going, hey, this is good, Like this work.

This was as good as we could expect it to be.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
Anybody that wants to hate on it for for what
they saw that, I mean, you're just hating because you
want to hate something. Like the outcome of this was
as good as you could expect it to be, and
it was entertaining, and you saw home runs and you
still had the great flavor stories and you know, meeting
meeting Jordan Walker, learning about him, meeting his dad, who
comes out of the stands. He's so excited, you know,
wearing a big Cardinals jersey. Great, right, he's swinging it
(11:52):
like the old man.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
He looked like he should have been pitching.
Speaker 1 (11:55):
You know, it was.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
It was fun. But that's say you had cag Leone's
dad pitching, knew him.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
That's that's as good as you could expect it to be.
And this was a huge win tonight for Major League Baseball.
I didn't miss the legendary round of war watching a
guy at twenty eight twenty nine home runs like, okay,
we've seen that. Now, hey, you built towards the end.
It was exciting, and we saw a guy win a right, like, okay,
that's kind of what.
Speaker 3 (12:18):
This can be tonight.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
It does. Everything in sports doesn't need to be what's
the ramifications? It needs to be something that is seismic
across the board. No, not everything needs to be a
late November loss in college football by an undefeated team
or now with this, you know, a twelve team playoff
by by a two loss team, right, doesn't need to
be that way. It can just be fun that entertains you.
(12:39):
There's different forms of sports that makes you feel good
that you like watching. Everything doesn't need you know, every
movie doesn't need to be and every book doesn't need
to be war in piece. Sometimes it can be housemade.
Sometimes it can be something that is a that is
a really good, fun thriller that you like reading and yeah, okay,
good it's a popcorn book compared to a book that
makes you feel like you ate a steak.
Speaker 3 (12:59):
Right.
Speaker 1 (12:59):
Movies the same way. Every movie doesn't need to be
an Oscar Winner. Sometimes he needs to be fun and
entertaining and make me jump in my seat or make
me care about the characters. And that's kind of what
the Home Run Derby was. You want it to be
the best version of that kind of entertainment, the best,
you know, you know, thriller you could get out there,
the best, but you know, popcorn book you can read.
(13:21):
That's what you want something like the Home Run Derby
to be. And it was that tonight. Well, be curious
when numbers get released from Netflix as to how it
translated not only here but globally. Right, you have Marikami
comes back off the Il White Sox Slugger twenty home
runs in the first half Jordan brand announcement, so a
bunch of print ads and everything. He had, those shoes

he was, the cleats he was wearing today. Pretty sweet.
Yeah yeah, but he goes up and while he doesn't
have a ton of home runs, there's no cheap one
among him. So you get your international market. So I'll
be curious to see what you get in terms of
numbers watching out of Japan. But you had a great
mix of young stars, right Walker's what twenty three, twenty
four years old, Murakami in his mid twenties, and then

you have the hometown heroes, the legend pick you know
for the All Star Game and everything in Bryce Harper,
Schwarber puts on a massive show. Kamonaro's there. I mean
camanaioad Caminaaroads. Let's just start to finish that. You had
the participation of a bunch of stars, guys on the
comp guys that have been on your stage for a
(14:24):
long time. We don't get that in a lot of sports,
so for baseball to get that part of it as well.
And you know, obviously we're on air, so we didn't
get the benefit of a lot of the in event broadcasts.
So I mean you've got the cutaways, you've got the interviews.
You had Barry Bonds and Albert Poolhole sitting on a
couch talking basement right, talking hitting, which is always a win.
(14:45):
And let's face it, major League baseball is a three
outcome event for most anyway, strikeouts, walks, while you eliminated
those and you went straight to the heart of the
matter with the home run, which is what everybody's waiting
for in their highlight reels. Anyway, and these guys put
on a show. I mentioned cag leone his dad's pitching
him at a rapid pace. I mean they went just
over four minutes in his appearance in the first round.
(15:08):
But it went in the third deck, right, It's like
hitting it at in McCovey Cove out in San Francisco.
It doesn't happen a whole lot, right, That's why you
watch the Kayakers fight to the death for that ball
as it hits the water. But same thing here. It's like,
all right, these are all memories moments. I'm sure a
ton of trading card photos coming out of here from
(15:29):
those cool launch angles and all.

But it was a great made for TV event.
Speaker 1 (15:33):
Tomorrow we get the Midsummer Classic, and we'll get to
see all the videos from the history of that event
as well, so I mean we all win. It's also,
you know, the annivershi of Disco Demolition. Sure they got
that going. There's a lot of discus yesterday into this
wee hours of the morning as all those people got
arrested in Chicago.

about him, and then set in a direct message to
a fan, which is just entirely stupid. But I thought, Okay,
someone's negotiating, and TMZ's gonna come through before someone is.

It's Vegas. There's I mean there's no part Vegas where
there's where. There's no cameras outside of I mean really,
how is there no cameras? How was there no video

so he got that second contract. You think he went
and just said, hey, we don't need this out. He
got paid in bucket hats. I don't know if you

Don't get me wrong, I don't know what the market

But like I always thought it as I got older,

really really cool, Like get a nice warm one, but
like my head is too big and I look like

Like it's depending on how much they use, right in
terms of the Yeah, the brim that can just be
so grossly oversized. I have a cool white Sox one
that was one of the giveaways where the logo was
actually kind of small skin like, Okay, I could wear that,
and then I put it on, I'm like, it's flopping
all the way down. I'm like, that just doesn't look
right and there's no rigidity to it whatsoever to where
you could give it any kind of struck. You gotta

really have a small head to wear a bucket hat.
Like bucket hats, that's the case, I mean, I mean,
I would like to find a website where it's, hey,
bucket hats for big head people, but like if you
wear them too big to come down over your ears
and then it's like you.

Maybe that's our billion dollar idea. I don't know if
you can make that work.

into this?

chasing something. Wasn't anybody here want to know? It seems
to you you and me are forgetting something that sounds

of video to you know, because it's not my first
day can make a segue. There's video and pictures of
all of Geno's Smith's getting stopped by the police in
the last three months driving too fast in a car.

now because this when I saw this today, I just said,

Gino Smith, Jets quarterback now has been stopped three times
in the last three months for traffic infractions. The latest
he was speeding doing seventy and a forty five. The
police officer did him a favor, said, hey, you can't
drive that nice car, nice wheels, can't drive that fast. Here,
let me see your license. I don't have it, and
he warned you got to carry it with you. Like

you talk about letting a guy off easy. So guys
speeding doesn't have his wallet, all of these things, and shouldn't.

The officer get reprimanded for that though?
Speaker 1 (23:47):
And again, well that isn't that bad practice when that
gets out, I would say that, But if it was you,
you would say, oh, you know, I left my wallet
at home, but like you can keep a picture of
it on your phone now and all these things, like
like Gino Smith in the last three months, now, these
are three bad stories, right. There's one involving a woman
who is who said, you know, now there's been a

some kind of a domestic assault going on and I'm saying,
what is happening? And now Gino Smith three times now
he's had two traffic infractions.

Don't know how long he makes it as a quarterback
in the NFL the rest of the way, Like you
you go to the Jets. Not only is this your
last chance you go to the Jets in your summer,
is every couple of weeks there's a bad story about you.
I mean how long? I mean, I don't know what.
What's he gonna make it a month? Is a Jets
quarterback before they go to Cade Clubnick like I really
he is.
Speaker 3 (24:37):
He is staring the end of.
Speaker 1 (24:38):
His NFL career square in the face, and I don't
think he realizes that. I think I'm gonna go to
the Jets. I got paid this year. I'm gonna do this.
I got this kind of money. Unless he just doesn't care,
and I'm gonna stink and we're gonna tank, and the
Jets are gonna get another quarterback next year or next year,
Dante Morrill have no choice but to be a Jet.
You know, I've got dodged you for a whole year,
went back to school because I couldn't stand it. Now
(25:00):
I gotta be a Jet anyway. Or maybe it's arch Manning,
but like he is looking at the end of his
NFL career, and the more time that goes on with
stories like this, like I don't know how long he
makes it in camp, Like but makes to the season
the beginning of the season if he doesn't start out great.
When you have all of this already, and you have
you have bad stories and bad energy surrounding you, surrounding
(25:20):
the team, it's not gonna take that long for them
to say, yes, sorry, not working out, We're going to
something else. So, I mean, really, if you want to
hasten the end of your NFL career, by all means,
this is the way to do it right, This is
the way to do it. Where I'm on my last chance, right,
Just think about that, You're on your last chance with
the NFL team, and what have been the headline since
you showed up. Well, let's see, we have a bad
domestic situation. We have two other times I've been stopped
(25:42):
by police for for driving infractions. Like you're not a
first round draft pick, where hey, you got to learn
to grow up and there's gonna be people around you.
We're gonna send you out with within with an Uber
account or whatever. It's gonna be be Uber gold or whatever.
But this is a guy staring his last chance in
the and these are decisions that he is making.
Speaker 3 (26:03):
Not that this.
Speaker 4 (26:03):
Translates to the field, where if you're a bad decision
maker off the field, you're a bad decision maker on
the field. And we know he's a bad decision maker
on the field all the pixie throws. But I mean
just the fact that, like, I don't know that he
realizes the stakes he's at. I don't know if he
realizes that this is where his NFL career is. Like,
I don't know how much longer he makes it in
the NFL, whether he's starting or even on a team. Yeah,
I look at it. He's in year thirteen now. He
(26:25):
was a high second round pick by these same Jets
thirteen years ago. Yeah, you have a head coach who
is desperately clinging to his job.
Speaker 3 (26:34):
Right, let's call that what it is too.
Speaker 1 (26:36):
You've got that festering in the background, Like I'm gonna
be saddled with this and his decision making wins losses
is gonna cost me my job. Like they brought in
Frank Reich, he's gonna help out with the offense, and
that's all finding good. But this is the bet that
the organization made. And Gino's had some moments, right, that's
(26:57):
what they were. Yeah, a couple of games, it's a
couple of small stretches that earned him, what is it,
over one hundred and twenty million dollars for his NFL career.
Good job by him, And maybe he's at the I
don't care. I know it's done one way or another.
I mean I had to re sign with the Jets. Yeah,
maybe maybe that's it. I still can't believe they brought
(27:17):
him back and that recognition and whatever is going on.
And if he's having issues, I hope he's okay. I
hope all the people around him. You talked about domestic issue,
all of that, that that it gets resolved. But you're
you're looking at a guy who is in again. He's
in year thirteen. He has long outlived from an NFL perspective,
(27:38):
any expectations we had, because when he left the Jets
the first time, how long was he going to be around?
So the fact that he's still here all these maybe
it was twenty thirteen draft pick. I don't I have
a green card. The rookie card is sitting there. That
reminds me of, Look how fast time goes and this
guy's still in the league. How much longer when you're

clinging to your final chance. And these are decisions that
you make because the Jets are tanking for next year.

It's like, listen, we can put a guy.
Speaker 1 (28:08):
We can put a guy out here who stinks and
is going to help us get Arch Manning or Dante more.
You know, you've come in potentially to hopefully save one
of our jobs, because maybe Woody Johnson's going to say, yeah,
I know the tank is worked, but I don't want
you to be the head coach anymore. I want you
to be the GM Like I mean, who comes into
their last chance in the NFL and this is this
is what you do. Hey typical, Hey, typical Jets though,

this how the Jets operate with stuff like this.

Really, but they they thought it would go wrong.
Speaker 1 (28:34):
But they thought it would just go wrong on the field, right,
because that's the thing, right when he re signed with
the Jets, a lot of punchlines, a lot of laughs,
and all of that being hey, Gino's back with the Jets, haha.

But then you're gonna have a bunch of off field issues.
Speaker 1 (28:50):
Like it's just anything that the team could have just said, hey,
he's had some success, we want to bring him home
and give him a chance for that. Jets cests that
he never had like selling a line of nonsense, of course,
but you add all this, like, how do you go
full throated behind this guy if you're Aaron Glenn, if

you're the GM, if you're the organization as a whole,
It's like he's embarrassing you and cutting through because right
now we're getting to that dull time, right so that
worst time for gms and coaches. They don't want any
phone calls, they don't want any news. Here's your news,
exit out about a Fresco exit swelling down the Jason

if he's still starting for the Jets by week four,
I'll be absolutely surprised.

right now, this is the we saw it on Netflix tonight.

For the longest time, the Home Run Derby had been
on ESPN. And when I saw Chris Berman's name trendy
because you know, I always say, you know, ESPN could
always just just let him out of ESPN jail and
let him do the Home Run Derby.
Speaker 3 (31:38):
I mean, you know, let him go out and.
Speaker 1 (31:39):
Do back back back back back back brack brack brack
crow out right. You can probably get a pretty good
price for a rental fee. Yeah, I want to rent
Chris Berman's contract, Yeah, or just loan him out to Netflix.
Let let him do it tonight, right, let him do
the home Run Derby right like Berman. And but the
thing is like to see full circle for Berman tonight
was kind of fun because look, the guy built ESPN.
(32:02):
He was the most popular star ESPN had for years.
Then with the advent of social media, people have seen
him do his act for a long time. All the negativity, Ah,
I Kevin, gotta watch Berman do the nickname thing again.
Speaker 3 (32:13):
It's so old.
Speaker 1 (32:13):
I've seen this, you know, ESPN. Oh, people say any
things on social media. We gotta do something about this.
And now, you know, Berman basically had been off the
air and not doing anything. Now they let him back
a little bit and he's doing a little bit of
Primetime with Booger McFarland, which has gotten you know, a
lot of attention over the past couple of years, which
is great because Primetime was the gold standard for football
(32:35):
shows for a long time. But like you know, Berman,
for the for the last few years, since you know,
ESPN decided Okay, we're gonna we're not gonna have you
on a lot, has been really difficult seeing that, Oh yeah,
we don't like Burne, we don't like Berman. Then when
I see him trending tonight, I'm like, oh, this is
gonna be a lot of people just are gonna say, oh,
so glad he's gone, so last out there. But by
and large, the majority of the comments I'm looking through, like,
(32:57):
oh man, Netflix really makes me misc Berman. Not like
Netflix did a horrible job. We told you, we told
you it was fine, everything was, everything was gonnay got
a great outcome. But just I really like the fact
that now it's gone so much for Berman, where he's
gone from big star and then everybody all of a sudden,
we're sick of him, and now they haven't seen him
in a long time. So now, oh I really miss
(33:18):
Chris Berman, right, I want that nostalgia back again and
to bring Berman back to to be doing home Run Derby.
And I kind of like that a bit for him
at least, because you know, it's it's it's really sad
to see someone like just like an athlete, where you
see an athlete who's so good for so long that
you watch him kind of play at the end of
their career and they're not the same person they were.
And this is nothing any more than just ESPN deciding yeah,
(33:39):
we're gonna put other people on the air. So but
I kind of like the fact that Berman was good.
You know, people wanted to see him come back and
do the home Run Derby again.

Because it was.

It was his best thing, right, I mean even you
know him just midway through when he's describing home runs,
he's got no voice left, and it's.

got eleven. He's not got this.

Netflix put up a graphic in the semifinals just of
the different players and it said Jordan Walker twenty twenty
six home run Derby champion. Oh, during the semi five,

this is before you got to the finals, before anything,
they put up that graphic. Hey, guess what, here's your
own derby champion. Netflix apparently knows who's going to it now,
and you know, and here's something you know for all
the different sporting events we think, oh, people know something
going on Netflix is a new beat of sports. The
fact that hey, people think Netflix could pull something like

this off, I think that speaks to the cachet that
Netflix has in the general population. They do spend a
lot of money on original program They do tons of money,
no question about too much money, but they do spend
a lot of money.

I mean, look, if you want to get your.

Original programming, if you knew I was gonna end, this's
not original program feed today. Ending is predetermined. Did the
ball really go into the seats? Simulated? Once you see
that ball disappear could go anywhere. Just have a guy
jumping up and down like he caught it. Yeah, and
you pretend you cut this ball, You pretend you get
this ball. You pretend you get this ball, you drop

this once everybody can boo you. All right, that's great,
It is pretty cool. As they continue to tradition. I
guess a lot of the balls that flew into the

was constructed behind him. That's been the whole World Cup. Yeah,

lot of the Argentina's talk has certainly been he's literally
covering his ears at the control desk.

But a lot of going on there.

But everything that we watch officiating is not on the
up and up. The officials, this guy's longtime family friends
with the president. This guy, I mean, there's nothing that
goes without a little Yeah, it's never on the up
and up. The guy just can't win a competition. No,
but I'd like to go back to this right. Anytime

we talk about something being fixed, right, like or your
conspiracy theory for something, I always like to ask the
question who benefits from this?

Who better?

Like people who think the world is flat? Okay, okay,
who benefits from the world being round? Who's making who's
making money?

you go into one of those fancy stares both there,
you go, hey, what do you get there?

Like I had anthropology over in the corner. What's that

I get where you can say, okay, this is big business.
You know the you know pharmaceutical companies make money, or
you know people who are investors make money, or like
that that I understand when you say that, I said, okay,
there's somebody that wins.

If you're trying to send me gold or so yeah, I.

Mean when when it used to be Ed McMahon. Now,
who is it that comes on and tells you convert
all your money to gold. Convert your money to gold? Buddy?

Who had Tom Selleck? Is Tom Sellick doing that?
Speaker 1 (04:40):
No? He does reverse mortgage. No, that's right, that's right.
Now who does the convert your money to gold? Everybody? Right? No, no, no,
but there's somebody very specific, like from the nineties that
was a big star that's like doing it now. Oh
I know what you know what I'm saying. I picture
in trying to think who is me convert your money
to gold? Okay, well it's clearly it gets you entertained.

No, I mean, hey, you know a lot of crazy
stuff happening now, convert that money to gold.

But I always say, okay, who benefits? Right?

Like again, like okay, the world is flat? Okay, who's
making money off of this?

Now?

Who's making money? Right? You can't? Well, there's still space,
so we'd still spend money on NASA, you know, putting
you know, going up in space. There's still space. Now
apparently there would be space under you know, not just
not just up, but under who benefits, right, Like who benefits?
So I look at this and I go, okay, okay,
it's fixed who benefits? If they really wanted the event

to be something that is legendary talked about forever, don't
you think it would have been fixed for Kyle Schwarber
to win in his home park and the celebration. Do
you think it would be fixed for Jordan Walker to
win it, to beat Kyle Schwarbur in the final round
and to get booed and to have Philly fans boo
once again? I don't think that. Again, who I mean?
(06:00):
Obviously the winner benefits, right, the winner benefits because he
gets a million dollars. Yeah, but I don't see there
being any large Major League Baseball wins. There's big money
in Jordan Walker winning over Kyle Schwarber, right, unless there's
some kind of crazy money bet in offshore counts we
don't know about. It was all I had Walker to
win from the beginning with all this, which we would
(06:21):
find out at some point. But I really I don't see.
I don't see who wins if it was fixed for
George Walker to win the competition. See he was plus
six fifty to plus eight hundred okay to win it,
so I mean not ridiculous, but yeah, I always like that.
Follow the money is a general rule of thumb that
we've talked about going back many generations in terms of
(06:44):
decision making. You know wars, Yeah, who's going to profit?
Who do you get to plunder?
Speaker 3 (06:49):
Sure? Again goes back to a lot of gold.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
Yeah, we're aversion to gold. We tie it all together
right there, I can melt down your kingdom. But it's
the for Jordan Walker. I mean, he makes more than
his salary. He's eligible for salary arbitration. So this might
be one of the fights for Major League Baseball saying
why is this guy still under their control as he's
(07:14):
in the final year of his original contract. So you
got that, but it was close late. The Philly fans
won because they got all their derision out, so they
go home happy. Do you think Philly fans would rather
go home having cheered Kyle Schwarber to victory or hey,
I'm glad it could be mad that he didn't win.

Booed happy because there hitting home runs for them all
right when when play resumes at the end of the week.
So I mean they still get both things. They got
a great show from Schwarber, and they got to boo.

So not only ben Rice, but the Results had a
very full day hit a ton of home runs, all
of those. I got the cheering emotions, I got the
hateful emotions, I got the booing emotions. Spent. I go
home and I sleep for a couple hours, and I
go to work and my pie chart, I want seventy
percent to be negative and thirty percent to be positive.
And I got that to me. I would hope for

most of us, we lay our ahead on our pillows

But overall, I mean to be honest, like this was
a huge success tonight, Like this was as good as

but was it fun entertainment? And were the new rules
good where you're limiting the swings a little bit earlier,

but you're allowing the players to be stronger as the
derby went on, you're building towards an ending and not
just who's less tired at the end. And when you're
watching one hundred pop ups in the final lot round.

We're doing the main part where you're doing it on

So these guys are like, well, if I get more
home runs, yeah, and all you're doing is swinging yourself out.

To your point, the new changes work great. You had
a walk off situation for a home run Derby. To
have a walk off is great. You had Schwarber in
it till the end, which was great for the home fans.
But overall the TV experience, this was really good. Like
the changes worked, and it was fine on Netflix. Like
if you're baseball, you're walking away from this taking a
big sigh relief, going, hey, this is good, Like this work.

This was as good as we could expect it to be.

Anybody that wants to hate on it for for what
they saw that, I mean, you're just hating because you
want to hate something. Like the outcome of this was
as good as you could expect it to be, and
it was entertaining, and you saw home runs and you
still had the great flavor stories and you know, meeting
meeting Jordan Walker, learning about him, meeting his dad, who
comes out of the stands. He's so excited, you know,
wearing a big Cardinals jersey. Great, right, he's swinging it

like the old man.

He looked like he should have been pitching.
Speaker 1 (11:55):
You know, it was.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
It was fun. But that's say you had cag Leone's
dad pitching, knew him.

That's that's as good as you could expect it to be.
And this was a huge win tonight for Major League Baseball.
I didn't miss the legendary round of war watching a
guy at twenty eight twenty nine home runs like, okay,
we've seen that. Now, hey, you built towards the end.
It was exciting, and we saw a guy win a right, like, okay,
that's kind of what.
Speaker 3 (12:18):
This can be tonight.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
It does. Everything in sports doesn't need to be what's
the ramifications? It needs to be something that is seismic
across the board. No, not everything needs to be a
late November loss in college football by an undefeated team
or now with this, you know, a twelve team playoff
by by a two loss team, right, doesn't need to
be that way. It can just be fun that entertains you.
(12:39):
There's different forms of sports that makes you feel good
that you like watching. Everything doesn't need you know, every
movie doesn't need to be and every book doesn't need
to be war in piece. Sometimes it can be housemade.
Sometimes it can be something that is a that is
a really good, fun thriller that you like reading and yeah, okay,
good it's a popcorn book compared to a book that
makes you feel like you ate a steak.

Movies the same way. Every movie doesn't need to be
an Oscar Winner. Sometimes he needs to be fun and
entertaining and make me jump in my seat or make
me care about the characters. And that's kind of what
the Home Run Derby was. You want it to be
the best version of that kind of entertainment, the best,
you know, you know, thriller you could get out there,
the best, but you know, popcorn book you can read.

That's what you want something like the Home Run Derby
to be. And it was that tonight. Well, be curious
when numbers get released from Netflix as to how it
translated not only here but globally. Right, you have Marikami
comes back off the Il White Sox Slugger twenty home
runs in the first half Jordan brand announcement, so a
bunch of print ads and everything. He had, those shoes

he was, the cleats he was wearing today. Pretty sweet.
Yeah yeah, but he goes up and while he doesn't
have a ton of home runs, there's no cheap one
among him. So you get your international market. So I'll
be curious to see what you get in terms of
numbers watching out of Japan. But you had a great
mix of young stars, right Walker's what twenty three, twenty
four years old, Murakami in his mid twenties, and then

you have the hometown heroes, the legend pick you know
for the All Star Game and everything in Bryce Harper,
Schwarber puts on a massive show. Kamonaro's there. I mean
camanaioad Caminaaroads. Let's just start to finish that. You had
the participation of a bunch of stars, guys on the
comp guys that have been on your stage for a
(14:24):
long time. We don't get that in a lot of sports,
so for baseball to get that part of it as well.
And you know, obviously we're on air, so we didn't
get the benefit of a lot of the in event broadcasts.
So I mean you've got the cutaways, you've got the interviews.
You had Barry Bonds and Albert Poolhole sitting on a
couch talking basement right, talking hitting, which is always a win.
(14:45):
And let's face it, major League baseball is a three
outcome event for most anyway, strikeouts, walks, while you eliminated
those and you went straight to the heart of the
matter with the home run, which is what everybody's waiting
for in their highlight reels. Anyway, and these guys put
on a show. I mentioned cag leone his dad's pitching
him at a rapid pace. I mean they went just
over four minutes in his appearance in the first round.
(15:08):
But it went in the third deck, right, It's like
hitting it at in McCovey Cove out in San Francisco.
It doesn't happen a whole lot, right, That's why you
watch the Kayakers fight to the death for that ball
as it hits the water. But same thing here. It's like,
all right, these are all memories moments. I'm sure a
ton of trading card photos coming out of here from

those cool launch angles and all.

But it was a great made for TV event.

wear them too big to come down over your ears

let me see your license. I don't have it, and
he warned you got to carry it with you. Like

you talk about letting a guy off easy. So guys
speeding doesn't have his wallet, all of these things, and shouldn't.

The officer get reprimanded for that though?

And again, well that isn't that bad practice when that
gets out, I would say that, But if it was you,
you would say, oh, you know, I left my wallet
at home, but like you can keep a picture of
it on your phone now and all these things, like
like Gino Smith in the last three months, now, these
are three bad stories, right. There's one involving a woman
who is who said, you know, now there's been a

some kind of a domestic assault going on and I'm saying,
what is happening? And now Gino Smith three times now
he's had two traffic infractions.

Don't know how long he makes it as a quarterback
in the NFL the rest of the way, Like you
you go to the Jets. Not only is this your
last chance you go to the Jets in your summer,
is every couple of weeks there's a bad story about you.
I mean how long? I mean, I don't know what.
What's he gonna make it a month? Is a Jets
quarterback before they go to Cade Clubnick like I really
he is.

He is staring the end of.

His NFL career square in the face, and I don't
think he realizes that. I think I'm gonna go to
the Jets. I got paid this year. I'm gonna do this.
I got this kind of money. Unless he just doesn't care,
and I'm gonna stink and we're gonna tank, and the
Jets are gonna get another quarterback next year or next year,
Dante Morrill have no choice but to be a Jet.
You know, I've got dodged you for a whole year,
went back to school because I couldn't stand it. Now

I gotta be a Jet anyway. Or maybe it's arch Manning,
but like he is looking at the end of his
NFL career, and the more time that goes on with
stories like this, like I don't know how long he
makes it in camp, Like but makes to the season
the beginning of the season if he doesn't start out great.
When you have all of this already, and you have
you have bad stories and bad energy surrounding you, surrounding

the team, it's not gonna take that long for them
to say, yes, sorry, not working out, We're going to
something else. So, I mean, really, if you want to
hasten the end of your NFL career, by all means,
this is the way to do it right, This is
the way to do it. Where I'm on my last chance, right,
Just think about that, You're on your last chance with
the NFL team, and what have been the headline since
you showed up. Well, let's see, we have a bad
domestic situation. We have two other times I've been stopped
(25:42):
by police for for driving infractions. Like you're not a
first round draft pick, where hey, you got to learn
to grow up and there's gonna be people around you.
We're gonna send you out with within with an Uber
account or whatever. It's gonna be be Uber gold or whatever.
But this is a guy staring his last chance in
the and these are decisions that he is making.

Not that this.

Translates to the field, where if you're a bad decision
maker off the field, you're a bad decision maker on
the field. And we know he's a bad decision maker
on the field all the pixie throws. But I mean
just the fact that, like, I don't know that he
realizes the stakes he's at. I don't know if he
realizes that this is where his NFL career is. Like,
I don't know how much longer he makes it in
the NFL, whether he's starting or even on a team. Yeah,
I look at it. He's in year thirteen now. He

was a high second round pick by these same Jets
thirteen years ago. Yeah, you have a head coach who
is desperately clinging to his job.

Right, let's call that what it is too.
Speaker 1 (26:36):
You've got that festering in the background, Like I'm gonna
be saddled with this and his decision making wins losses
is gonna cost me my job. Like they brought in
Frank Reich, he's gonna help out with the offense, and
that's all finding good. But this is the bet that
the organization made. And Gino's had some moments, right, that's
(26:57):
what they were. Yeah, a couple of games, it's a
couple of small stretches that earned him, what is it,
over one hundred and twenty million dollars for his NFL career.
Good job by him, And maybe he's at the I
don't care. I know it's done one way or another.
I mean I had to re sign with the Jets. Yeah,
maybe maybe that's it. I still can't believe they brought

him back and that recognition and whatever is going on.
And if he's having issues, I hope he's okay. I
hope all the people around him. You talked about domestic issue,
all of that, that that it gets resolved. But you're
you're looking at a guy who is in again. He's
in year thirteen. He has long outlived from an NFL perspective,

any expectations we had, because when he left the Jets
the first time, how long was he going to be around?
So the fact that he's still here all these maybe
it was twenty thirteen draft pick. I don't I have
a green card. The rookie card is sitting there. That
reminds me of, Look how fast time goes and this
guy's still in the league. How much longer when you're

clinging to your final chance. And these are decisions that
you make because the Jets are tanking for next year.

It's like, listen, we can put a guy.

We can put a guy out here who stinks and
is going to help us get Arch Manning or Dante more.
You know, you've come in potentially to hopefully save one
of our jobs, because maybe Woody Johnson's going to say, yeah,
I know the tank is worked, but I don't want
you to be the head coach anymore. I want you
to be the GM Like I mean, who comes into
their last chance in the NFL and this is this
is what you do. Hey typical, Hey, typical Jets though,

you're the GM, if you're the organization as a whole,
It's like he's embarrassing you and cutting through because right
now we're getting to that dull time, right so that

And the best part of tonight was seeing something come
full circle that I really enjoyed coming full circle. Okay,
right now, this is the we saw it on Netflix tonight.

For the longest time, the Home Run Derby had been
on ESPN. And when I saw Chris Berman's name trendy
because you know, I always say, you know, ESPN could
always just just let him out of ESPN jail and
let him do the Home Run Derby.
Speaker 3 (31:38):
I mean, you know, let him go out and.
Speaker 1 (31:39):
Do back back back back back back brack brack brack
crow out right. You can probably get a pretty good
price for a rental fee. Yeah, I want to rent
Chris Berman's contract, Yeah, or just loan him out to Netflix.
Let let him do it tonight, right, let him do
the home Run Derby right like Berman. And but the
thing is like to see full circle for Berman tonight
was kind of fun because look, the guy built ESPN.
(32:02):
He was the most popular star ESPN had for years.
Then with the advent of social media, people have seen
him do his act for a long time. All the negativity, Ah,
I Kevin, gotta watch Berman do the nickname thing again.
Speaker 3 (32:13):
It's so old.
Speaker 1 (32:13):
I've seen this, you know, ESPN. Oh, people say any
things on social media. We gotta do something about this.
And now, you know, Berman basically had been off the
air and not doing anything. Now they let him back
a little bit and he's doing a little bit of
Primetime with Booger McFarland, which has gotten you know, a
lot of attention over the past couple of years, which
is great because Primetime was the gold standard for football
(32:35):
shows for a long time. But like you know, Berman,
for the for the last few years, since you know,
ESPN decided Okay, we're gonna we're not gonna have you
on a lot, has been really difficult seeing that, Oh yeah,
we don't like Burne, we don't like Berman. Then when
I see him trending tonight, I'm like, oh, this is
gonna be a lot of people just are gonna say, oh,
so glad he's gone, so last out there. But by
and large, the majority of the comments I'm looking through, like,
(32:57):
oh man, Netflix really makes me misc Berman. Not like
Netflix did a horrible job. We told you, we told
you it was fine, everything was, everything was gonnay got
a great outcome. But just I really like the fact
that now it's gone so much for Berman, where he's
gone from big star and then everybody all of a sudden,
we're sick of him, and now they haven't seen him
in a long time. So now, oh I really miss
(33:18):
Chris Berman, right, I want that nostalgia back again and
to bring Berman back to to be doing home Run Derby.
And I kind of like that a bit for him
at least, because you know, it's it's it's really sad
to see someone like just like an athlete, where you
see an athlete who's so good for so long that
you watch him kind of play at the end of
their career and they're not the same person they were.
And this is nothing any more than just ESPN deciding yeah,
(33:39):
we're gonna put other people on the air. So but
I kind of like the fact that Berman was good.
You know, people wanted to see him come back and
do the home Run Derby again.
Speaker 3 (33:47):
Because it was.
Speaker 4 (33:48):
It was his best thing, right, I mean even you
know him just midway through when he's describing home runs,
he's got no voice left, and it's.
Speaker 1 (33:54):
Big bug back good god, back back god. Like having
to announce every single home run right like where now
it's just people are talking as the guys. Any there's
another home run, home run there for Walker. He's now
got eleven. He's not got this.
Speaker 4 (34:09):
Back back back back back back back back, like every
single one.
Speaker 1 (34:14):
He would announce every single home run. I give credit
Matt vest Kershon. It's making the rounds on social media.
During Ben Rice's round uh seven home runs. Uh, he
did the tribute to Berman and then baseball coach from
eight hours ago.
Speaker 3 (34:28):

There's a lot of backs, and then Chris Berman gone, yeah, gone,
pract practic.

Now here's the thing.

If I had known, okay, if I had known, yeah
that people were gonna miss Berman this month.
Speaker 3 (34:45):
Oh that's it right, I mean, it's it happened slowly.
Speaker 1 (34:48):
If I had known that, like I didn't know it
until I came in tonight. People, Netflix is here in La. Yeah,
I know people at Netflix. I could have walked up
and said, hey, I'll do this for free as Berman.
Don't even need to pay me. I'll do it for
zero dollars, and I'll do it as Berman, and I'll
say stuff.
Speaker 4 (35:05):
Like they're Caglia second to none with another home run
DJ and Jordan from way downtown another home run, not
walking but homering.
Speaker 1 (35:18):
Okay, again, that wasn't bad. I really thought you'd have
a Chuck Norris reference or something.
Speaker 4 (35:24):
Kyle homering all the way to South Park with that
blast DJ, forget about kill my god, they killed him
out killing Kenny. Kyle killed that baseball DJ, like I
could have done that, Like I'd have done it for
Why do we not have a show at Netflix? I
know they hand out development deals. What are you doing?
Speaker 1 (35:44):
I think I'm earning like three seasons right now. Let's
go that right there, Let's make this happen. Yeah, animated
versions of us, don't call me Jim Rice and and
instant Rice.
Speaker 4 (35:55):
Home run DJ's not a San Francisco treat, but a
New York treat with Rice.
Speaker 3 (36:05):
I mean, like I could have done anything.
Speaker 1 (36:07):
That's just off the top of your head, Either that
or you while walking the dog. You really went to
a deep dark place and channeling all your inner burmanisms.
Speaker 4 (36:16):
With great power comes great responsibility, and Uncle ben Rice
showing you that responsibility and power with that home run.
Speaker 3 (36:25):
DJ no, turn it ahead. I could have done it.
I'm all of this. No, that's pretty good. It would
have been fantastic. But it's good to see Berman get
that love just from you.
Speaker 1 (36:38):

I'm sorry. That's not a home run, Wilson. I'm sorry
another pop out. Not a home run, Wilson. Wilson, Oh,

You got Yeah, you've gone off the d I mean,

Would they didn't even have to pay me. I would
have done that. And I know you're saying I wouldn't
pay you for that. I think a lot of people
would pay for that.
Speaker 1 (37:07):
I think a lot of folks would have loved to
see Berman in the booth, even if he just showed
up for one hitter.
Speaker 4 (37:11):
And again, I would have even gone to the point,
I'm gonna give you my raspy, you know, middle of
the home run derby, like Week sixteen of Prime Time.
Speaker 1 (37:19):
When I have no guys, I got no vite, but
they had Will Ferrell out there hawking show. You had
Michael Buffer running around, paid a lot of money for him.
Speaker 3 (37:32):
Yeah. Possibly nothing to have you done.
Speaker 1 (37:34):
It would have shown up just to do a hitter
for free.
Speaker 3 (37:37):
I really why not? Just one?
Speaker 1 (37:38):
Just one back then, that's all you need, just one
history of the home run derby. Just bring him out.
