Greetings, Welcome in side our three, The Jason Smith Show
with my babs friend Mike Harmon. Well dressed, hobo, uh
before we get to big stuff out of the NFL.
You know this really quick today because it looked really
scary and I'm glad that he's okay. If you're on
social media, you probably saw a video of Pro Football
(00:52):
Talk and Michael Holly, who's been a commenter here on
the NFL and other sports for a long time on
the air with my Florio passes out and faints while
he's on the air, and it turns out he is okay.
He fainted, he got back up pretty quickly and he
was all right. It's cut his knee a little bit.
(01:12):
But you see the video of him just his eyes
start to glaze over and he falls to the side.
In the beginning, you look at it and you're saying, oh,
he's really just having some fun with Florio, like dude,
come on, stop talking, and then you see no, no,
and he just falls off the side of his chair
and it's just a really really scary situation. Just glad
that he is okay, because that was that was really

spooky to see, even after I knew he was okay
and I saw him, like wow, that's that's really really something.
Speaker 4 (01:37):
As a guy who's added some of those blood sugar moments.
We don't know what triggered this, but I have had
those faint I just used to the point of losing
your balance. I feel terrible, you know, watching that and
hope he's okay, and for all of you out there
and you know, make sure you get your checkups and
whatever else. Hopefully it was just an isolated, you know, moment,
(02:00):
momentary thing, but you know, just how quickly that hit
very scary.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
Yeah, I mean, now, supposedly he got overheated and fainted
in the studio at his home, which hopefully that's what
it is. And look, it's I don't know. I fainted
once in my life, and it was I still think
about it and was one of the scariest moments because
I was when I had the flu and it had
a really bad fever, and I this tells me sometimes
I can say this my wife is listening. Tells me
(02:24):
sometimes maybe that if something, my wife is not going
to be the best in certain situations, like I was
really sick and I had I had a fever and
I wasn't feeling good and I got I was coming
back from the bathroom to get into bed, and you know,
the way we were, like the sides we sleep on.
My wife sleeps on the side closest to the to
(02:46):
the door, and I sleep on the side furthest away
from the door. That was just the way it was.
And so I had to get up and go to
the bathroom. I wasn't feeling good coming back, and I,
you know, woke her up and she got up to
go to the bathroom as well. So I want to
go to the bathroom too, and I'm walking and for
some reason, I decide to start walking around the far
side to get into the bed where I knew something
was going on. And instead of just taking two steps
(03:09):
forward and falling onto the bed. I said, no, I'm
gonna walk around to get on my side of the bed,
and all of a sudden, the next thing I know
is I'm on the floor and and my ears are
ringing it and my wife is going, what happened to you? Okay,
just let me go to the bathroom. I'll be right there.
I'll be right there. And I'm like okay, and I'm
not thinking about it till at the end, going I
fainted and you still went to the bathroom before you
(03:29):
came back to help me. Come on, this is a
crisis here. It's straight out of Silin. What's going on?
You still had to go to the bathroom so bad?
Like I think she knew I was okay because I
was starting to get up, but I don't remember it
was I was standing up at one moment and the
next thing, I'm on the ground and I'm like, why
does my head hurt? Why is that? I mean, you
have no control over what happens. It's not like you
(03:50):
see in the TV shows. Oh I'm fainting and I'm
falling on a couch. You're oh, I'm fainting. Someone catches me.
Like you faint and you hit the ground really hard,
and that's the gariest part. And that's why for Holly,
I'm glad that. I'm glad that when you know, when
it happened to him, he was already sitting, so falling
down wasn't going to be as big a thing of Hey,
I'm falling and if you fall forward, you're falling on
(04:11):
your head. You fall back, you're falling on your head,
and that could be a really really bad thing like that.
You know, when I saw that, I thought back to that,
and I remembered how scared I was and how scared
he must have been. Because sure, it's really scarier in
retrospect because you don't know what's happening at the time,
but after it does, you're like, WHOA. I was absolutely
powerless in that moment for that time, absolutely powerless.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
Yeah have done it twice. Remember I lost the tooth
and had my facial scarring for a while, And then
another times on the air, Yeah I did. And then
another time I was all of a sudden, I just
felt like I was swimming in like my head swimming
and like just kind of rocking back and forth to
where it was disturbing to say the least. Before I
(04:54):
finally succumbed to it, so hopefully isolated. Like I said,
the overheat and that he you know, climbing control and
whatever is enough to fix it.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
But yeah, just scary moments. Yeah all right, so the
best thoughts to Michael Holly. Hopefully he is okay The
Jason Smith Show with yeah yeah.
Speaker 4 (05:12):
Ive no, no, before you finished, though, you've talked to
Pam about this since right.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
Yeah, yeah, okay, I don't know. I just had to
go to the bathroom really really bad. I'm like, okay,
but I was on the floor. You could have helped
me up into like a sitting position. Yeah. Now, I'm
also the kind of guy where I'm like, no, I
got it, I got it. I'm getting up, I'm got it.
Like I'm gonna very much go your own way. Guy,
I got it, I got it. But still I'm like,
maybe a little bit of at least, hey, come over,

make sure you're all right, you are right here? A
little bit.

I'm like, you know, you know, wow, Yeah, I mean
that's an a Layine Venice, Uh, Jake Jarmel moment which
gets Jui fruits.
Speaker 3 (05:50):
Oh boy, Jason Smith, Mike Harmon seeing how I gotta
have a conversation my wife about that afterwards. Uh So
tonight three games in the NFL, and I don't think
anybody's gonna disagree with me. Where we saw a couple
of teams we expected coming into tonight they're gonna be
competing for the number one overall picking the draft next year,
(06:10):
the Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets. And for
the Dolphins, well, they didn't do anything to really dissuade
us that they're going to be picking number one overall.
The Jets, Hey, Kate Klubnick was okay, but I think
the Bucks played their eighth string and they still wound
up beating the Jets. But okay, I don't think anybody's
you know, I have no illusions about the Jets and
(06:32):
the Dolphins. But can I say this though, real quick
before you get away from the Dolphins. Go ahead, why
did you need to have eight Chan run the ball
as much?
Speaker 4 (06:39):
That's seven fewer carries that we can count on for
him in the regular season.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
No, no, no, they want you to know that they mean
it when they said we are going to run a
chen until his legs fall. No, that's just yea. We
are absolutely go We don't want you to think we're
We're not we're gonna say that, we're not gonna do it. No, no, no, no,
we are people of our word here in Miami. When
we say he's gonna run the football fifty times a game,
even in the priests season, he's got seven carries to
start things off. Gotta get used to that pounding. Who's

Oh my goodness, I gotta go back and look, no way,

and ninety two. Hang for James Well, I gotta see this, No.
Eighty four, Okay, so it was already sixteen games. It

was sixteen? Okay, four hundred and seven rushing attempts in
eighty five for sore, you go for James Wilder in
nineteen eighty four. Nicely done. Boy. So again, I don't
think anybody's is surprised. Look, the Dolphins are terrible. You
know they're playing for twenty twenty seven. The Jets the
same way. We've talked about the Browns doing the same thing.
(07:57):
But man, I'll tell you what. After to night, I
think you gotta make ruin that Mount Rushmore of teams
for the number one pick with the Atlanta Falcons. All right,
it was we started off on the show and saying, listen,
it's one game in the preseason, and you never want
to be that crazy about it, but certain things stand out,
and how bad the Atlanta Falcons were had how bad
(08:20):
Tua was really stands out. Look at Jason Cole told
us last hour, Hey, the preseason is the preseason. But
when guys are really really good or they're really really bad,
that's something to really pay attention to. And the Falcons
tonight nothing was good for them, absolutely nothing like Tua
was awful. I mean, I think if you have Kyle
(08:40):
Pittson Dynasty and Fantasy, you're happy that he threw every
time to him. But this was just the first possession
with Tua getting getting hurried and having to throw the
ball into the turf and fumbling on the first series,
and it was just nothing went Atlanta's way. This was
absolutely awful. Now I looked at team going, Man, they
(09:00):
figure out their quarterback position. The NFC South is up
for grabs, Hey, they might be able to make a
little bit more of a run. It looked like they
could have made a later run last year if things
had gone better for them earlier. Now I'm thinking, man,
this is even is gonna be even worse because this
Falcons team is absolutely awful and wow, is too a
really bad and the one Yes, you're playing without some guys,
(09:21):
I understand that, but you know what, Denver didn't play
their starters either, right like Jared Sedam and Sam Allnger,
you know, played most of the game tonight, so and
defensively the same way. This was just so bad like
that you wonder why the Falcons are trending and why
people because this was just so bad like this was.
Of all the teams that have played so far, we
still have a few teams to go tomorrow in the NFL.
(09:43):
For each one in the preseason, the team that stands
out is as the worst we have seen with the
most concerns about. It's the Falcons, and they've had so
much young talent on this team for so long, and
now it's like, whoa are we really gonna have to
put them up there? And maybe it's the Falcons make
room on there because they could be picking first over
all the draft next year. Like, that's how bad tonight
was for a.
Speaker 4 (10:03):
Last six and a half to seven and a half
wins across the most of your big sports books in
terms of their win total for the year. Obviously we're
we're looking at those point totals and fantasy purposes. You
got two guys, you draft Kyle Pitch, you decide how
much you love him, because if twas quarterbacking a hot route,
mean he threw to him four times in his nine plays, So.
Speaker 3 (10:29):
Yeah, that's it.
Speaker 4 (10:29):
But I love this these stats out of Kevin Stefanski
basically saying, well, I evaluate the entire offense in that regard.
So it didn't move the ball well enough as an offense.
Certainly some things we can clean up. Said it was
tough to fully grade Tua's performance because the plan was
only to play him for a series or two. Okay,
(10:51):
so you evaluate those nine plays, coach, would you like
a redo on your answer? He was not good and
we had problems. It's hard to give a grade on
that fewest amount of pause, pause pause sample size.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
I get it.
Speaker 4 (11:06):
Thirty is where we want to get to statistically relevant.
The show was tonight, the game was tonight, and all
you can evaluate is what you saw there. And there's
no walking away feeling confident, particularly when your other guy
that's battling for the job says he can't take a
hit right now. You can do everything else, Yeah, you
can look good doing it, but he can't take a hit,
(11:27):
which is you know, the subtitle of Tua's run in
the NFL. Hopefully all that's behind and he's played not well,
but he's been able to play at least for the
most part here these last couple of years. But they're
in trouble man, because that offensive line was already an issue.
You're down two starters on your defensive line, one by suspension,
(11:50):
the other dude to injury already. Yeah, I'll take the under.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
Yeah, this is really alarming, and honestly, I feel awful
for bishoncra Robinson, right, like the guy he got paid
due and he's making all kinds of money. I feel great.
He's like, I'm really glad I got that contract as well.
I don't know what it's gonna be like for me
the next couple of years here. This could be really
really bad. Now it could just be this year being
bad because if they take and they pick first, all
(12:15):
of a sudden, hey wait a minute, you had a
twenty five year old Bajon Robinson and Arch Manning is here,
so okay, but wow, like Bijon's gotta be saying okay.
Sometimes you just gotta suck it up at work, and
this is one of those times, right, so you like
you go if everybody goes through that at work. Now,
whatever you do for a living, there's times where morale
is high and your job is great, and there's times
where morale is low, whether a new boss comes in
(12:37):
you don't like, or new corporation comes down and says
some things that this is not great. Yeah, eat up
and down. Sometimes you gotta just say, you know, it's
got to get through the next few months, right, this
is something we just we just have to get through.
And I feel like that's Bejon Robinson. Wow, like we
could be downsizing a lot of things that have I
just got to get through this September through December months
and just be okay at the end of it, because wow,
(12:59):
this is going to be a really tough next four months.
Speaker 4 (13:02):
Yeah, I mean, look, in the end, you're gonna have
an opportunity to showcase yourself. The offensive line ranks in
the upper half of the league, so whoever the quarterback
is will be able to do the two step, and
a lot of his work in the receiving game is
literally the dump off four feet to his left or right,
So you'll still stack up perceptions. So don't get too
(13:23):
concerned there, fantasy owners, except for the fact that red
zone opportunities unless he you know, has a jail break
kind of opportunity, maybe few and far between. But yeah,
the quarterback position is just a giant riddler outfit right now.
Speaker 3 (13:38):
Man, I'll tell you it is. This was a really
of all the stories the last couple of nights, right
what stands out Mendoza and the night he had drew
Aller late playing as well as he did. Certainly that
stands out right, Kate Klubbick was a pretty decent size
story tonight. But you know, Mendoza being the number one
pick Aller and really the Steelers quarterback room. But this
(14:00):
Falcons is whoa man like this is like, Okay, I
get I was expecting I could go either way. I
expect see Mendoza play well or not, the quarterbacks play well,
play not, But this with Tua and the Falcons, it's like,
oh my goodness, Like that's like that. That, by far
is the biggest takeaway of the first two days so far.
Speaker 4 (14:17):
Well, but Jody had your your suspicions as they put
those two guys together, going okay, let's see how this goes.
And part of it was well, Stefanski's won and competed
in Cleveland to the tune of winning a couple of
Coach of the Year awards. So yeah, maybe now he's
gonna have to be a damn music magician.
Speaker 3 (14:36):
Now you're gonna say musician. I wanted to make him
a music he's gonna have to be. He's gonna be
a music He's gonna have to play beautiful jazz. And
let's say the Falcons trail twenty seven to nothing, and
there goes to Fanski on the clarinet. He is playing
a solo time out Atlanta. They want to talk it over,
bit it in in in and TJ Clear Benny Goodman

saying not a lot of good things happening in Atlanta
with Stefanski and the Obo TJ. It's no good man,
that was it? That was it? Nice job, buddy, Nice bunny.

I mean, that's impressive, but I'm gonna actually need regular
photo evidence and I can't see any AI renditions to

All right, well, we're cause playing. He's Patrick Ewing, I'm
John Starks. That's what we're gonna do. Actually, fair enough
A conversation Harmon and I have been having all week
back and forth about about action and and and betting
on preseason football. Like I say, hey, you know what
the individual stats like when you know that Carson Beck's
gonna start, or Fernando Mendoza is going to start, okay,
(18:35):
but overall the game and the overunders, like I feel
like that's just impossible. I feel like you're just trying
to throw a dart, like and and Harmon's like no, no,
and he's going all through here here, this over under here,
and I got this and this trend to all of this.
Where are you on? When it comes to gambling on
preseason football, we look to.
Speaker 6 (18:52):
Try and exploit I just where we think we can
find him. Of course, it's all about where you enter
the market and the kind of numbers you're betting into
the perfect illustration what we saw on last night between
San Francisco and Tennessee. It's a different bet. If you're
betting the Titans plus one and a half where that
number opens, or you're laying six and a half where
the game closes right before kickoff. Inevitably the game falls
right in the middle. And I think, what's interesting so far?
(19:13):
And it's all a very small sample size six games yesterday,
three games today in the Hall of Fame game that
we have seen every move of three points. If you
bet the closing line and chase what we'll call in
gambling terms, this steam you would lose, and that includes
the Jets, who are bet up from a one and
a half point dog to a five and a half
point favorite. Today Green Bay went from a one and
a half point underdog to a three point favorite, The Colts,
(19:34):
the Dolphins, etc. All of those games crashed and burned.
And what's even more interesting, you saw significant money come
in against the Denver Broncos today. They of course built
a twenty four to nothing lead and first half and
we're able to hang on in the second half despite
Sam Ellinger's best effort to take knee and run the
clock out.
Speaker 3 (19:50):
But you're betting the dogs because it's the three season, right,
I mean, you've.
Speaker 6 (19:54):
Going to gravitate towards looking at underdogs, especially given the
volatility and the unpredictable nature of third and fourth stringers
that are going to impact a lot of these betting results,
especially week one, and the reality of it is now
with information being readily available and those folks that are
quick on the trigger finger, Yes, if starters are going
to play, you have to make sure you get in
before the betting market responds, because the market adjusts, and
(20:17):
if you're late to the party, it's not lost on
odds makers. And it's not like these numbers move ten,
twelve to fourteen points because teammate says their starters are
going to take the first two or three series.
Speaker 3 (20:27):
All right, tod So when it comes to what you've
seen so far, obviously in the preseason, you know, rookies
coming in playing what couple of intriguing teams you're looking
at futures on coming up for this next month and beyond.
Speaker 6 (20:40):
Preseason is always tricky to find teams that you fall
in love with ik kind of the more cynical approach.
And there's teams that raise major red flags that I
want to be looking to try and bet against, either
in the micro market and early on in the season
or from a season long standpoint. And two things that
have stood out in the last two nights and never
to fall victim to being prisoner of the moment. Green
(21:00):
Bay depth is a major concern, both on the offensive
and defensive side. I mean, their second and third stringers
had absolutely no prayer against the triumvir and for the
Pittsburgh Steelers with Will Howard, Drew Aller, and even Mason
Rudolph out there. So it's a group that I had
major reservations about coming into the season losing their defensive coordinator,
and I'm not sure many were answered. So green Bay
(21:21):
the first month of the season, I think they're going
to find themselves needing to lean on to Jordan Love
and a revamped offense to kind of mask them of
their defensive deficiencies. And one of the other teams, you know,
kind of using that connective tissue between green Bay's former
defensive coordinator and the team he's coaching now. Jeff Haffley
and the Miami Dolphins are poised to have a long,
long season. The first unit looked good with Malik Willison
Devin h Chaine, but there is a clear absence of
(21:45):
difference makers and playmakers on the offensive and defensive side,
and if they're injuries at any of the key positions,
this is a Dolphins team that's one or two major
injuries away from flirting with three wins, ceiling and probably
drafting first overall with a chance to grab their franchise
guy in the twenty twenty seven draft.
Speaker 4 (22:01):
We've been talking about him a lot tonight. The quarterback
mess that they have in Atlanta. You've got some good
skilled position players You've got a good offensive line, but
you had a couple of guys suspended defensively, and you
have two in Pennick. So six and a half to
seven and a half? See over under? Do we hammer
the under?
Speaker 3 (22:19):
Now?
Speaker 6 (22:20):
I'm not going to hammer the under because the division
they play in is the worst in football, and it
wouldn't surprise me at all the editor winner or they
needed eight wins to emerge atop the scrap heap there,
much like we saw last year with the Carolina Panthers.
I've taken a position against another team in that division
that was Carolina under seven and a half earlier this offseason,
dealing with a rash of injuries on the offensive line.
(22:41):
I really liked that coaching staff, but I just don't
think that talent is there. But harm You mentioned the
Atlanta Falcons, and I think a lot of people forget
that their defense was what gave them an opportunity some
weeks last year. And when you lose two of the
key contributors on your pass rush, Jalen Walker to attorney
cut for the season, and we saw the James Peer
suspension get handed out today. He's going to miss roughly
half the season. You wonder if Atlanta defensively can pick
(23:04):
up where they left off and be able to generate pressure,
or if they're going to revert to a team we
saw two years ago that allowed quarterbacks to put down
a picnic basket in a blanket and basically take as
much time as they wanted in the pocket. Offensively, the
quarterback conundrum remains a question that's still unanswered. I have
to believe that two is going to be their Week
one starter. And while they do have nice skilled position
players and Bijon Robinson, Kyle Pitts and Drake Lennon that
(23:26):
fantasy owners know all too well, I think Zachariah Branch
is one of the more intriguing guys to watch and
see if he emerges as that wide receiver too. Knowing
that it's been a relative black hole for the Atlanta
Falcons since they were trotting out Roddy White on one
side in Calvin Ridley on the other.
Speaker 3 (23:41):
You know something that Todd I saw on your Twitter
earlier today, and you know Harmon and I brought this
up earlier that you know, the NFL Top one hundred
players list came out and seeing the players thirty through
twenty one, Sam Donald sitting at twenty one, and I
liked your quote. Sam Donald may finally have a super
Bowl on his resume, but on what planet is the
twenty first best player in the league? Well, blanking league,
(24:02):
I say you in the blanking league, and that you
had that earlier today.
Speaker 6 (24:06):
Look, he might not even be the twenty first best
player if he was still in the New York Jets. Yeah,
going to the season, I will get Sam Donald credit.
He's got a Super Bowl ring that nobody can take
away from him. But for anybody who wants to credit
him for being the sole individual responsible for that level
of dominance we saw from the Seahawks, it's a little

Football League. And anybody else who looked at that rest
of the last and goes, yeah, Sam Donald, he's a
better football player than Aiden Hutchinson. May want to try
and make a phone caller too, to check in with
their local psychologists.

Seahawks over unders ten and a half wins. Since we're
going there and Sam Donald looks to have a repeat
performance in a tough division. They've got no substation issues,
and the Rams are the de facto favorites for everybody
here at this point. What do we look for in

the encore that ten and a half in a cannibalistic division.
Speaker 6 (25:10):
Don't really have a strong opinion on the Seahawks season
long output with that win total ten and a half,
you look at their number to win the Super Bowl
and repeat. I mean, they're the second shot on the
board behind the afore mentioned Rams, who you brought up
as a favorite harm but I think they're actually a
little bit undervalued in the way that the betting market
is responding to them, at least early on. From a
game to game standpoint, I'm going to be extremely intrigued
(25:32):
to see how the revenge matchup goes on opening night
against the New England Patriots and see if the Seahawks
can be a little bit more diverse in terms of
what they want to do on the offensive side. We
know how talented JSN is, but the backfield is going
to be a little bit of a different story. Is
Zach Sharbney returns from injury, We'll see how Jadarian Price
adjust to life in the National Football League after not
(25:52):
being a high volume running back during his time in
Notre Dame. And maybe it's Aj Barner that takes on
a bigger role before this Seahawks team. I do think
they have a wide range of outcomes, because it's hard
for me necessarily to sign off on a team that
I wasn't bullish on going into last year. They clearly
exceeded everyone's expectations and then some. But we'll see if
what goes up must come down, or it's a roster

that's still being undervalued, at least the way they're being
priced on a weekly basis.

to be surprised if the Jets lead the NFL in rushing.
I know they're talking big with Geno Smith and throwing

the offensive line is really good. Breece Hall is Breece Hall.
You saw tonight Brayln Allen his back that the guy

is an absent salute truck. And when he's healthy, forget it.
They're gonna run the football with these two guys. You know,
that's what Aaron Glenn really really wants to do. I'm
not gonna be surprised that Jets have two guys with
eight hundred yards rushing and they lead the league in
rushing this year.

So if they run the ball effectively and the defense
is up to what Aaron Glenn was supposed to bring,
even if Gino, all he's got to do is not
throw up on himself.
Speaker 3 (37:25):
Are we talking playing five wins? Five wins? Are we
talking we're hitting that over under him five and a half? Six? Yeah,
maybe six wins five and a half. I need to know,
is it. I'll give you six wins. I'll give you
six wins. Yeah, I'll get easily. I think the Jets
will win six games.

Because I've seen some thought pieces that you know, they
could be one of those surprise. Hey, there's always those
random playoff squads that the Jets could find themselves in
that mix, which would be chaos winning a ton of
games sixteen thirteen.

Now the other take from tonight, and this is where
we always look for teams from the year before to
fall off for next year. Everybody expects the Patriots to
regress back to the middle, But I mean, just watching
this team tonight, just dominate the way they are with
their backups, and it seems like every game is a
business trip. The Broncos aren't going anywhere. Man, they are going.
(38:17):
You think, oh, maybe the broad Well we'll figure out Bonick. No, no, no,
Broncos are gonna be right there all the way to
the end. They are a terrific football team. They will
win games machine like this year may not be that exciting,
but it's gonna be games like like twenty seven to seven,
twenty one to three. This is how they're gonna do
it all. Yeah.

I mean, I'm not the biggest Peyton fan because well
I can tell you you're good. You don't need to
tell me. But the addition of Jalen Waddell to that

You know this really quick today because it looked really
scary and I'm glad that he's okay. If you're on
social media, you probably saw a video of Pro Football

Talk and Michael Holly, who's been a commenter here on
the NFL and other sports for a long time on
the air with my Florio passes out and faints while
he's on the air, and it turns out he is okay.
He fainted, he got back up pretty quickly and he
was all right. It's cut his knee a little bit.
(01:12):
But you see the video of him just his eyes
start to glaze over and he falls to the side.
In the beginning, you look at it and you're saying, oh,
he's really just having some fun with Florio, like dude,
come on, stop talking, and then you see no, no,
and he just falls off the side of his chair
and it's just a really really scary situation. Just glad
that he is okay, because that was that was really
(01:33):
spooky to see, even after I knew he was okay
and I saw him, like wow, that's that's really really something.
Speaker 4 (01:37):
As a guy who's added some of those blood sugar moments.
We don't know what triggered this, but I have had
those faint I just used to the point of losing
your balance. I feel terrible, you know, watching that and
hope he's okay, and for all of you out there
and you know, make sure you get your checkups and
whatever else. Hopefully it was just an isolated, you know, moment,
(02:00):
momentary thing, but you know, just how quickly that hit
very scary.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
Yeah, I mean, now, supposedly he got overheated and fainted
in the studio at his home, which hopefully that's what
it is. And look, it's I don't know. I fainted
once in my life, and it was I still think
about it and was one of the scariest moments because
I was when I had the flu and it had
a really bad fever, and I this tells me sometimes
I can say this my wife is listening. Tells me
(02:24):
sometimes maybe that if something, my wife is not going
to be the best in certain situations, like I was
really sick and I had I had a fever and
I wasn't feeling good and I got I was coming
back from the bathroom to get into bed, and you know,
the way we were, like the sides we sleep on.
My wife sleeps on the side closest to the to
(02:46):
the door, and I sleep on the side furthest away
from the door. That was just the way it was.
And so I had to get up and go to
the bathroom. I wasn't feeling good coming back, and I,
you know, woke her up and she got up to
go to the bathroom as well. So I want to
go to the bathroom too, and I'm walking and for
some reason, I decide to start walking around the far
side to get into the bed where I knew something
was going on. And instead of just taking two steps
(03:09):
forward and falling onto the bed. I said, no, I'm
gonna walk around to get on my side of the bed,
and all of a sudden, the next thing I know
is I'm on the floor and and my ears are
ringing it and my wife is going, what happened to you? Okay,
just let me go to the bathroom. I'll be right there.
I'll be right there. And I'm like okay, and I'm
not thinking about it till at the end, going I
fainted and you still went to the bathroom before you
(03:29):
came back to help me. Come on, this is a
crisis here. It's straight out of Silin. What's going on?
You still had to go to the bathroom so bad?
Like I think she knew I was okay because I
was starting to get up, but I don't remember it
was I was standing up at one moment and the
next thing, I'm on the ground and I'm like, why
does my head hurt? Why is that? I mean, you
have no control over what happens. It's not like you
(03:50):
see in the TV shows. Oh I'm fainting and I'm
falling on a couch. You're oh, I'm fainting. Someone catches me.
Like you faint and you hit the ground really hard,
and that's the gariest part. And that's why for Holly,
I'm glad that. I'm glad that when you know, when
it happened to him, he was already sitting, so falling
down wasn't going to be as big a thing of Hey,
I'm falling and if you fall forward, you're falling on
(04:11):
your head. You fall back, you're falling on your head,
and that could be a really really bad thing like that.
You know, when I saw that, I thought back to that,
and I remembered how scared I was and how scared
he must have been. Because sure, it's really scarier in
retrospect because you don't know what's happening at the time,
but after it does, you're like, WHOA. I was absolutely
powerless in that moment for that time, absolutely powerless.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
Yeah have done it twice. Remember I lost the tooth
and had my facial scarring for a while, And then
another times on the air, Yeah I did. And then
another time I was all of a sudden, I just
felt like I was swimming in like my head swimming
and like just kind of rocking back and forth to
where it was disturbing to say the least. Before I
(04:54):
finally succumbed to it, so hopefully isolated. Like I said,
the overheat and that he you know, climbing control and
whatever is enough to fix it.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
But yeah, just scary moments. Yeah all right, so the
best thoughts to Michael Holly. Hopefully he is okay The
Jason Smith Show with yeah yeah.

Ive no, no, before you finished, though, you've talked to

Yeah, yeah, okay, I don't know. I just had to

have a conversation my wife about that afterwards. Uh So
tonight three games in the NFL, and I don't think
anybody's gonna disagree with me. Where we saw a couple
of teams we expected coming into tonight they're gonna be
competing for the number one overall picking the draft next year,

the Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets. And for
the Dolphins, well, they didn't do anything to really dissuade
us that they're going to be picking number one overall.
The Jets, Hey, Kate Klubnick was okay, but I think
the Bucks played their eighth string and they still wound
up beating the Jets. But okay, I don't think anybody's
you know, I have no illusions about the Jets and
(06:32):
the Dolphins. But can I say this though, real quick
before you get away from the Dolphins. Go ahead, why
did you need to have eight Chan run the ball
as much?
Speaker 4 (06:39):
That's seven fewer carries that we can count on for
him in the regular season.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
No, no, no, they want you to know that they mean
it when they said we are going to run a
chen until his legs fall. No, that's just yea. We
are absolutely go We don't want you to think we're

think anybody's is surprised. Look, the Dolphins are terrible. You
know they're playing for twenty twenty seven. The Jets the
same way. We've talked about the Browns doing the same thing.

But man, I'll tell you what. After to night, I
think you gotta make ruin that Mount Rushmore of teams
for the number one pick with the Atlanta Falcons. All right,
it was we started off on the show and saying, listen,
it's one game in the preseason, and you never want
to be that crazy about it, but certain things stand out,
and how bad the Atlanta Falcons were had how bad
(08:20):
Tua was really stands out. Look at Jason Cole told
us last hour, Hey, the preseason is the preseason. But
when guys are really really good or they're really really bad,
that's something to really pay attention to. And the Falcons
tonight nothing was good for them, absolutely nothing like Tua
was awful. I mean, I think if you have Kyle
(08:40):
Pittson Dynasty and Fantasy, you're happy that he threw every
time to him. But this was just the first possession
with Tua getting getting hurried and having to throw the
ball into the turf and fumbling on the first series,
and it was just nothing went Atlanta's way. This was
absolutely awful. Now I looked at team going, Man, they
(09:00):
figure out their quarterback position. The NFC South is up
for grabs, Hey, they might be able to make a
little bit more of a run. It looked like they
could have made a later run last year if things
had gone better for them earlier. Now I'm thinking, man,
this is even is gonna be even worse because this
Falcons team is absolutely awful and wow, is too a
really bad and the one Yes, you're playing without some guys,
(09:21):
I understand that, but you know what, Denver didn't play
their starters either, right like Jared Sedam and Sam Allnger,
you know, played most of the game tonight, so and
defensively the same way. This was just so bad like
that you wonder why the Falcons are trending and why
people because this was just so bad like this was.
Of all the teams that have played so far, we
still have a few teams to go tomorrow in the NFL.
(09:43):
For each one in the preseason, the team that stands
out is as the worst we have seen with the
most concerns about. It's the Falcons, and they've had so
much young talent on this team for so long, and
now it's like, whoa are we really gonna have to
put them up there? And maybe it's the Falcons make
room on there because they could be picking first over

mean he threw to him four times in his nine plays, So.

But I love this these stats out of Kevin Stefanski
basically saying, well, I evaluate the entire offense in that regard.
So it didn't move the ball well enough as an offense.
Certainly some things we can clean up. Said it was
tough to fully grade Tua's performance because the plan was
only to play him for a series or two. Okay,

so you evaluate those nine plays, coach, would you like
a redo on your answer? He was not good and
we had problems. It's hard to give a grade on
that fewest amount of pause, pause pause sample size.

Thirty is where we want to get to statistically relevant.

you can evaluate is what you saw there. And there's
no walking away feeling confident, particularly when your other guy

can look good doing it, but he can't take a hit,

the NFL. Hopefully all that's behind and he's played not well,
but he's been able to play at least for the
most part here these last couple of years. But they're
in trouble man, because that offensive line was already an issue.

the other dude to injury already. Yeah, I'll take the under.

Yeah, this is really alarming, and honestly, I feel awful
for bishoncra Robinson, right, like the guy he got paid
due and he's making all kinds of money. I feel great.
He's like, I'm really glad I got that contract as well.
I don't know what it's gonna be like for me
the next couple of years here. This could be really
really bad. Now it could just be this year being
bad because if they take and they pick first, all

of a sudden, hey wait a minute, you had a
twenty five year old Bajon Robinson and Arch Manning is here,
so okay, but wow, like Bijon's gotta be saying okay.
Sometimes you just gotta suck it up at work, and
this is one of those times, right, so you like
you go if everybody goes through that at work. Now,
whatever you do for a living, there's times where morale
is high and your job is great, and there's times
where morale is low, whether a new boss comes in
(12:37):
you don't like, or new corporation comes down and says
some things that this is not great. Yeah, eat up
and down. Sometimes you gotta just say, you know, it's
got to get through the next few months, right, this
is something we just we just have to get through.
And I feel like that's Bejon Robinson. Wow, like we
could be downsizing a lot of things that have I
just got to get through this September through December months
and just be okay at the end of it, because wow,
(12:59):
this is going to be a really tough next four months.
Speaker 4 (13:02):
Yeah, I mean, look, in the end, you're gonna have
an opportunity to showcase yourself. The offensive line ranks in
the upper half of the league, so whoever the quarterback
is will be able to do the two step, and
a lot of his work in the receiving game is
literally the dump off four feet to his left or right,
So you'll still stack up perceptions. So don't get too
(13:23):
concerned there, fantasy owners, except for the fact that red
zone opportunities unless he you know, has a jail break
kind of opportunity, maybe few and far between. But yeah,
the quarterback position is just a giant riddler outfit right now.
Speaker 3 (13:38):
Man, I'll tell you it is. This was a really
of all the stories the last couple of nights, right
what stands out Mendoza and the night he had drew
Aller late playing as well as he did. Certainly that
stands out right, Kate Klubbick was a pretty decent size
story tonight. But you know, Mendoza being the number one
pick Aller and really the Steelers quarterback room. But this
(14:00):
Falcons is whoa man like this is like, Okay, I
get I was expecting I could go either way. I
expect see Mendoza play well or not, the quarterbacks play well,
play not, But this with Tua and the Falcons, it's like,
oh my goodness, Like that's like that. That, by far
is the biggest takeaway of the first two days so far.

Well, but Jody had your your suspicions as they put
those two guys together, going okay, let's see how this goes.
And part of it was well, Stefanski's won and competed
in Cleveland to the tune of winning a couple of
Coach of the Year awards. So yeah, maybe now he's
gonna have to be a damn music magician.

A conversation Harmon and I have been having all week
back and forth about about action and and and betting
on preseason football. Like I say, hey, you know what
the individual stats like when you know that Carson Beck's
gonna start, or Fernando Mendoza is going to start, okay,
(18:35):
but overall the game and the overunders, like I feel
like that's just impossible. I feel like you're just trying
to throw a dart, like and and Harmon's like no, no,
and he's going all through here here, this over under here,
and I got this and this trend to all of this.
Where are you on? When it comes to gambling on
preseason football, we look to.
Speaker 6 (18:52):
Try and exploit I just where we think we can
find him. Of course, it's all about where you enter
the market and the kind of numbers you're betting into
the perfect illustration what we saw on last night between
San Francisco and Tennessee. It's a different bet. If you're
betting the Titans plus one and a half where that
number opens, or you're laying six and a half where
the game closes right before kickoff. Inevitably the game falls
right in the middle. And I think, what's interesting so far?
(19:13):
And it's all a very small sample size six games yesterday,
three games today in the Hall of Fame game that
we have seen every move of three points. If you
bet the closing line and chase what we'll call in
gambling terms, this steam you would lose, and that includes
the Jets, who are bet up from a one and
a half point dog to a five and a half
point favorite. Today Green Bay went from a one and
a half point underdog to a three point favorite, The Colts,
(19:34):
the Dolphins, etc. All of those games crashed and burned.
And what's even more interesting, you saw significant money come
in against the Denver Broncos today. They of course built
a twenty four to nothing lead and first half and
we're able to hang on in the second half despite
Sam Ellinger's best effort to take knee and run the
clock out.
Speaker 3 (19:50):
But you're betting the dogs because it's the three season, right,
I mean, you've.
Speaker 6 (19:54):
Going to gravitate towards looking at underdogs, especially given the
volatility and the unpredictable nature of third and fourth stringers
that are going to impact a lot of these betting results,
especially week one, and the reality of it is now
with information being readily available and those folks that are
quick on the trigger finger, Yes, if starters are going
to play, you have to make sure you get in
before the betting market responds, because the market adjusts, and
(20:17):
if you're late to the party, it's not lost on
odds makers. And it's not like these numbers move ten,
twelve to fourteen points because teammate says their starters are
going to take the first two or three series.
Speaker 3 (20:27):
All right, tod So when it comes to what you've
seen so far, obviously in the preseason, you know, rookies
coming in playing what couple of intriguing teams you're looking
at futures on coming up for this next month and beyond.
Speaker 6 (20:40):
Preseason is always tricky to find teams that you fall
in love with ik kind of the more cynical approach.
And there's teams that raise major red flags that I
want to be looking to try and bet against, either
in the micro market and early on in the season
or from a season long standpoint. And two things that
have stood out in the last two nights and never
to fall victim to being prisoner of the moment. Green
(21:00):
Bay depth is a major concern, both on the offensive
and defensive side. I mean, their second and third stringers
had absolutely no prayer against the triumvir and for the
Pittsburgh Steelers with Will Howard, Drew Aller, and even Mason
Rudolph out there. So it's a group that I had
major reservations about coming into the season losing their defensive coordinator,
and I'm not sure many were answered. So green Bay
(21:21):
the first month of the season, I think they're going
to find themselves needing to lean on to Jordan Love
and a revamped offense to kind of mask them of
their defensive deficiencies. And one of the other teams, you know,
kind of using that connective tissue between green Bay's former
defensive coordinator and the team he's coaching now. Jeff Haffley
and the Miami Dolphins are poised to have a long,
long season. The first unit looked good with Malik Willison
Devin h Chaine, but there is a clear absence of
(21:45):
difference makers and playmakers on the offensive and defensive side,
and if they're injuries at any of the key positions,
this is a Dolphins team that's one or two major
injuries away from flirting with three wins, ceiling and probably
drafting first overall with a chance to grab their franchise
guy in the twenty twenty seven draft.
Speaker 4 (22:01):
We've been talking about him a lot tonight. The quarterback
mess that they have in Atlanta. You've got some good
skilled position players You've got a good offensive line, but
you had a couple of guys suspended defensively, and you
have two in Pennick. So six and a half to
seven and a half? See over under? Do we hammer
the under?
Speaker 3 (22:19):
Now?
Speaker 6 (22:20):
I'm not going to hammer the under because the division
they play in is the worst in football, and it
wouldn't surprise me at all the editor winner or they
needed eight wins to emerge atop the scrap heap there,
much like we saw last year with the Carolina Panthers.
I've taken a position against another team in that division
that was Carolina under seven and a half earlier this offseason,
dealing with a rash of injuries on the offensive line.
(22:41):
I really liked that coaching staff, but I just don't
think that talent is there. But harm You mentioned the
Atlanta Falcons, and I think a lot of people forget
that their defense was what gave them an opportunity some
weeks last year. And when you lose two of the
key contributors on your pass rush, Jalen Walker to attorney
cut for the season, and we saw the James Peer
suspension get handed out today. He's going to miss roughly
half the season. You wonder if Atlanta defensively can pick
(23:04):
up where they left off and be able to generate pressure,
or if they're going to revert to a team we
saw two years ago that allowed quarterbacks to put down
a picnic basket in a blanket and basically take as
much time as they wanted in the pocket. Offensively, the
quarterback conundrum remains a question that's still unanswered. I have
to believe that two is going to be their Week
one starter. And while they do have nice skilled position
players and Bijon Robinson, Kyle Pitts and Drake Lennon that
(23:26):
fantasy owners know all too well, I think Zachariah Branch
is one of the more intriguing guys to watch and
see if he emerges as that wide receiver too. Knowing
that it's been a relative black hole for the Atlanta
Falcons since they were trotting out Roddy White on one
side in Calvin Ridley on the other.
Speaker 3 (23:41):
You know something that Todd I saw on your Twitter
earlier today, and you know Harmon and I brought this
up earlier that you know, the NFL Top one hundred
players list came out and seeing the players thirty through
twenty one, Sam Donald sitting at twenty one, and I
liked your quote. Sam Donald may finally have a super
Bowl on his resume, but on what planet is the
twenty first best player in the league? Well, blanking league,
(24:02):
I say you in the blanking league, and that you
had that earlier today.
Speaker 6 (24:06):
Look, he might not even be the twenty first best
player if he was still in the New York Jets. Yeah,
going to the season, I will get Sam Donald credit.
He's got a Super Bowl ring that nobody can take
away from him. But for anybody who wants to credit
him for being the sole individual responsible for that level
of dominance we saw from the Seahawks, it's a little
bit of a pipe dream for me. So kudos to
front offices or players or whoever the hell it was
(24:29):
that voted for it. But no, Sam Donald, for me
is not the twenty first best player in the National
Football League. And anybody else who looked at that rest
of the last and goes, yeah, Sam Donald, he's a
better football player than Aiden Hutchinson. May want to try
and make a phone caller too, to check in with
their local psychologists.
Speaker 4 (24:45):
Seahawks over unders ten and a half wins. Since we're
going there and Sam Donald looks to have a repeat
performance in a tough division. They've got no substation issues,
and the Rams are the de facto favorites for everybody
here at this point. What do we look for in
(25:07):
the encore that ten and a half in a cannibalistic division.
Speaker 6 (25:10):
Don't really have a strong opinion on the Seahawks season
long output with that win total ten and a half,
you look at their number to win the Super Bowl
and repeat. I mean, they're the second shot on the
board behind the afore mentioned Rams, who you brought up
as a favorite harm but I think they're actually a
little bit undervalued in the way that the betting market
is responding to them, at least early on. From a
game to game standpoint, I'm going to be extremely intrigued
(25:32):
to see how the revenge matchup goes on opening night
against the New England Patriots and see if the Seahawks
can be a little bit more diverse in terms of
what they want to do on the offensive side. We
know how talented JSN is, but the backfield is going
to be a little bit of a different story. Is
Zach Sharbney returns from injury, We'll see how Jadarian Price
adjust to life in the National Football League after not
(25:52):
being a high volume running back during his time in
Notre Dame. And maybe it's Aj Barner that takes on
a bigger role before this Seahawks team. I do think
they have a wide range of outcomes, because it's hard
for me necessarily to sign off on a team that
I wasn't bullish on going into last year. They clearly
exceeded everyone's expectations and then some. But we'll see if
what goes up must come down, or it's a roster
(26:13):
that's still being undervalued, at least the way they're being
priced on a weekly basis.

and despite pitching horrendously, Edwin Diaz gets the save for
the Dodgers against the Brewers.

Man, Like, that's the thing about Diaz, right, everybody's seeing
it now, Dodgers fancying it, like he creates his own
trouble and he's done that and and he's not always great.
Every other year is great, and he doesn't bounce back
in a bad year. This is what you're gonna expect,
this roller coaster ride the rest of the season. That's
how it goes. Yeah, it's insane.
Speaker 4 (35:22):
I mean, we we've had sweating Jansen and Kimberl and
other closers across the league, usually reserved for the Dodgers,
but you know, we're all inclusive of the league. And
right now that's Edwin Diaz because every shot they showed
up Dave Roberts like, please, kids at home, don't read
his lips.
Speaker 3 (35:41):
That I mean, how but he wasn't even near the plate?
Speaker 4 (35:45):
Was the scary thing, right, like ze, he was drifting
and it was like just a guy going out there
and throwing. It's like he stopped pitching after about four pitches.
Speaker 3 (35:54):
Yeah, he was, he was. He was lucky to get
by with what he got by with tonight. But that
Tommy Edmund playing, I mean, yeah, he he owes him
a sandwich thanks to sandwich. Yeah you will you owe
me a sandwich? Ds All right, I'll get your sandwich.
It's okay.
Speaker 4 (36:08):
Actually a little bit more than that. The anger and
vitriol of an entire city, I think it's worth a
little more than that.
Speaker 3 (36:15):
All right. So we'll got more baseball on the way
next hour. I'm sure we'll hear from Dave Roberts, who
is probably just you know, taking his heart medication. Two
hot takes coming off of the NFL tonight. We got
a big NFL stuff coming up next hour on the show.
We got big stuff on Mendoza and all kinds of stuff.
But I'll give you two big hot takes number one
(36:37):
after tonight. Seeing how things are, I am not going
to be surprised if the Jets lead the NFL in rushing.
I know they're talking big with Geno Smith and throwing
the football and Garrett Wilson, all these wide receivers. But
the offensive line is really good. Breece Hall is Breece Hall.
You saw tonight Brayln Allen his back that the guy
(36:59):
is an absent salute truck. And when he's healthy, forget it.
They're gonna run the football with these two guys. You know,
that's what Aaron Glenn really really wants to do. I'm
not gonna be surprised that Jets have two guys with
eight hundred yards rushing and they lead the league in
rushing this year.
Speaker 4 (37:14):
So if they run the ball effectively and the defense
is up to what Aaron Glenn was supposed to bring,
even if Gino, all he's got to do is not
throw up on himself.
Speaker 3 (37:25):
Are we talking playing five wins? Five wins? Are we
talking we're hitting that over under him five and a half? Six? Yeah,
maybe six wins five and a half. I need to know,
is it. I'll give you six wins. I'll give you
six wins. Yeah, I'll get easily. I think the Jets
will win six games.
Speaker 4 (37:40):
Because I've seen some thought pieces that you know, they
could be one of those surprise. Hey, there's always those
random playoff squads that the Jets could find themselves in
that mix, which would be chaos winning a ton of
games sixteen thirteen.
Speaker 3 (37:56):
Now the other take from tonight, and this is where
we always look for teams from the year before to
fall off for next year. Everybody expects the Patriots to
regress back to the middle, But I mean, just watching
this team tonight, just dominate the way they are with
their backups, and it seems like every game is a
business trip. The Broncos aren't going anywhere. Man, they are going.
(38:17):
You think, oh, maybe the broad Well we'll figure out Bonick. No, no, no,
Broncos are gonna be right there all the way to
the end. They are a terrific football team. They will
win games machine like this year may not be that exciting,
but it's gonna be games like like twenty seven to seven,
twenty one to three. This is how they're gonna do
it all. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (38:35):
I mean, I'm not the biggest Peyton fan because well
I can tell you you're good. You don't need to
tell me. But the addition of Jalen Waddell to that
receiving corps makes that much more interesting.
