Speaker 2 (00:23):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Hello, Welcome in Side hour three The Jason Smith Show
with my bes friend Mike Harmon. Uh, thirteen minutes away
from the Western Conference Final being set in the NHL.
Looks like it's gonna be the Avalanche and the Golden Knights.
Nights lead the Ducks right now, four to one again,
(00:50):
thirteen minutes left to go. Meanwhile, earlier we watched look
it was. It was a case of the Hurricanes are
sitting around and waiting and waiting and wait, gonna wait
a little bit longer. But uh, maybe it's gonna wind
up being the Canadians and not the feel good story
of the Buffalo Sabers six three win, six to three.
A lot of goals, a lot of Barry Melrose would say,
(01:12):
a lot of offense.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
You know, you think Joel Quinnville in this nightcap should
have shaved his mustache, like the reverse playoff beard thing
or something.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
Look the highlight obviously we have, yeah quin Field's mustache.
But Marner's goal in this game is absolutely insane. It's
one of the best goals I've seen all year. He's
kind of down on a breakaway and he's able to
do like a triple deck in front of the net
and he puts his stick between his legs to score
the goal. Like it is. That is a goal scorers
(01:41):
goal man. Like that is so impressive, Like there's a
reason why that's gonna be like the number one play
from tonight. All all over the place. You see that goal,
you go wow, his hands move like lightning and he
puts the puck between his legs and scores. It's amazing,
amazing goal wizardry. Just wish I learned how to skate
as a kid. I could have been a good defense sewer.
I think, yeah, defense.
Speaker 3 (02:03):
Well, I mean, we just watched one of these schedule
release when we're talking in French, so I might as
well go down that road.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
It's been a big night. We watched it inside the park.
Home run did Oscar Hernandez. Yeah, it was not really
inside the park home run if you hit it in
Taioscar Hernandez's area and he doesn't get it. But I
didn't touch it, Is that really? Yeah, I didn't touch it,
So you can't give him an error. I didn't touch it.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
Right in the end, I can't judge like part of
it is. I can't judge how good or bad a
job you did on the effort. I just need to
know that you did. And in this case for ta Oscar,
he tried.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
I didn't touch it. He didn't touch it, didn't he
doesn't get an error. Didn't touch it. Uh. Now, today
was NFL schedule release day, and we're look, no other
show's doing this. We're giving you the grades of all
of the videos of the NFL's going because that's how
today should be. Like, today's about fun. It's a party. Look,
Jason Cole hit it right in the head last hour
(03:07):
NFL in Center resais this is where NFL teams. It's
a great party atmosphere day and and the social media
teams allowed to really stretch their legs and show how
creative they are. Now everybody goes to the wall for it.
So it's awesome. Is we give out the grades. Understand
that every the effort is always there, right, but but
we're giving a grade on creativity impact what we like.
(03:27):
We've given now two a's so far. Okay, Falcons got
an A. Falcon's got an A plus, Steelers got an
A minus.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
Right, Yeah, you really like the Falcons, particularly the Drake
and call.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
The Falcons get the next A. Their schedule lease was
done in a this is Sports Center style where it's
a series of like twenty thirty second commercials h starring everybody,
starring all the all the stars from the team. Matt
Ryan's a whole bunch of them, Stefanski's in a whole
(04:02):
bunch of them, and the vast majority of them are
really entertained. The Matt Ryan right off the jump was
really good. Yeah. Yeah, when he's talking when he's talking
about the schedule at least to a bunch of people
in office, and two people are whispering to each other
and he goes, hey getting the blanket, game, let's go,
and he got the mascots sitting there looking around. I
mean it was pretty good, well done. Yeah. I like
the one where Jon Robinson is uh is the uh
(04:26):
like the secretary and he's got a whole bunch of
different ways to pronounce his name, and the person walks
up and goes hi. It doesn't matter. Whatever you want
to say is good. However you want to say, however
you want to say, I don't care. I don't care.
It's all good, yeah, all good, all good, well done.
Those are fantastic. Uh so A for the Falcons, congratulations,
nice job Falcons get an A Okay, yeah, I mean really,
(04:48):
I mean it was it was well uh well constructed,
and clearly if you're gonna it's not just one attempt
at a bit, right, it's like, all right, here's our
overall theme, and we don't have to try drag out
five minutes, which I appreciate it because there are several
that we watched, like all right by, like we talked
about the Jets last hour right after about thirty seconds,
(05:10):
like all right, I get the bit. That's the thing.
That's why the Jets gotta B minus C plus because
it was okay, somewhat interesting, but I got it.
Speaker 4 (05:18):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
The next sea giving out, I hate giving out seas,
but I kind of have to. And I understand that
you know this team is really dealing with stuff right now,
so you kind of have to go a certain way.
But the Patriots Puppy Bowl release, I get to see
you're a nicer guy than I am. This is you
know why, as much as I love puppies society, yes,
(05:45):
I don't want to be that guy. Man, I don't
want to give them an F because put puppies on TV.
The puppies were cute.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
They're playing with with things, you know, for each of
the teams, and they're like, yeah, yeah, I get it.
Cute see but overall, like what what do you think
the meeting was?
Speaker 1 (06:01):
Like, I guarantee you talk to the Patriots PR guy
or a woman, they would say, you know what we
had for an idea? You know how great this was.
And then two weeks ago Bob Kraft said, hey, we
want to lay low all right, this is not we
got some stuff going. What is everybody? Hey, puppies, puppies,
let's put them out there. Man, that's great. No, that's
(06:22):
why I give it a I would have given it
much low. I would have given it a D minus
just because it's the Patriots. But I would have given
it like a D minus.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
But up.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
But again, they had puppies and again, humane society. I'm
not gonna be that.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
Signing your name as part of your AP test your
S A T A C T.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
All right.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
We gave you a couple of hundred points because you
spelled your damn name right.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
Terrible. It's four hundred right for the essay, I think,
so right?
Speaker 3 (06:46):
Your name I don't even know because they now give
like nine hundred points. There's extra sections. You don't really
have to get anything right to actually get credit for it.
Like there's I got a lot of problems with it,
but but in this particular say, it's like they got this.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
I always wish I went to school now as when
I went to school in the eighties and nineties. Mike,
you know the grades I would come out, Jason, you
can go to Harvard. Did you fill out this store? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (07:09):
I actually wrote about Joe Namath for three thousand words,
but it was supposed to be about the Canterbury Tams.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
Doesn't matter, Jason.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
I turned in something that looked like it was in
my handwriting, and my teacher accepted it.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
You're horrible in science. How did you get an AIM
minus an advanced place in biology? Well? Because I was
allowed to retake the test three or four times until
I got a good grade. Right that read the retaking
of tests that happened. I'm like, you've got are you seriously? Seriously?
Now I'm happy. I'm happy for my kids. I'm happy
for your kids. And I'm like, we get to retake
the test. If you get a low grade, you retake it.
(07:43):
I could just retake and just fix my wrong answers
and I can get a higher grade. That happens.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
Now, What's what's funny is both my daughters have experienced
that this year. It's like, yeah, and that's the retest, Like, well,
what'd you get? I got one wrong. I'm just gonna
go sit and watch a movie in stead. And I'm like, yeah,
it's not worth your forty five minutes. The one question,
No it's not is uh. Now you want another A?
You want another A.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
I'll give you an A. Okay, I'll give you an
A for the Browns release. You liked it. I liked
the Street Fighter to right. They did it in the
in the in the vein of here is a you know,
slacker announcing the opening of a new video game. But
it's from the nineties when Street Fighter came out that
that was pretty good in that style. I like the
(08:30):
lead and the the the detail on it where it
looked like Street Fighter where the the Browns are fighting
other teams and the uh the guy addresses the Jets
just goes bing bong, bing bong and he knocks him down.
Like that's real great attention to deed. That was a
little long, but I'm okay with it because it was
so creative and it was funny. It was up and down.
(08:51):
Some of them are funnier than others, but man, that's
those Street Fighter too. Those graphics were amazing. I like
that they just kept going to Miles Garrett.
Speaker 3 (08:57):
You're not playing anybody else on the It's just Miles
Gearts kicking everybody's ass. Like you have other players, right, Like, nope,
everybody just picks Miles gear Yeah. Yeah, it's the only one.
He's pile driving guys. But the guy that played the
slacker was pretty darn good.
Speaker 1 (09:13):
I liked it.
Speaker 3 (09:14):
He would have fit in on one of the uh,
you know sketches that you do Saturday out Live.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
Hey, go to this arcade. I was sure you got
the backwards had on and you say, oh, this is amazing. Man,
you're gonna see the graphics.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
Like he was using all the all the stuff from
the nineties.
Speaker 1 (09:30):
Man, it was it was done really really well. The
attention to detail on that was just outstanding. So yes,
a couple of now we're giving out a couple more
a's here. Hey it's a bye week. I want my quarterback. Yeah, yeah,
Shooter is not playing. Uh C plus for the Minnesota Vikings.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
You didn't like the Chefs inspired, it's done for the Vicers?
Is the U was the Ray Fines movie? Yeah, a
little bit of the many, but you know they don't
kill anybody.
Speaker 1 (10:03):
And you know they dragged a couple of people in there.
They got in there. Well, yeah, no they did. That's
why he gets to C plus. Okay, you know the
Rascini mentioned is wow. Man, So it's Will Rekerd, right, Okay,
you're the kicker. Is gonna do it? Chris Jerick? Chris
Jericho raw is oh Jerick. But but you know we
talked about how Wooden Fernando Mendoza was in the Raiders video. Boy,
(10:26):
Will Richerd is just I'm just kind of there. Man's like,
why did they give him some caffeine before they started
rolling and it's all the meals come out in the
style of the teams they're playing against, and some of
the some of it was good, right, a lot of
hidden stuff. You gotta watch it a couple of times,
but overall the overall energy, I'm like, yeah, that's that's
that's about a C plus because I got bored about
halfway through.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
Yeah, the cookies for the game against the Pats, uh,
you had your butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla flowers, star cornstarch,
bake you soda, some salt and juice. They dragged the
Rusini vrabel thing. But yeah, it's that one was kind
of It was also difficult because the way they put
(11:09):
the font and the graphic, like because there was a
little snarky comment under each under under each of the
team names, but it was covered up by watching it
on X by the X logo and showing you what
account you're watching it out like, so you didn't get
the full thrust of it.
Speaker 1 (11:27):
Now, if they did it, if they did it like
the Menu where, which is one of the most underrated movies,
fantastic movies. If they did it like that, where the
chef would come out and they would find a way
to foe kill him, you know or something. Or here's
all the people eating and they're dressed up as marshmallows
or they get dressed up as other teams like that.
If they didn't really like the menu as oh, that'd
(11:49):
be a higher grade. But this was just like, Okay,
here's another like I've seen You've seen so many food
shows stuff like this so many times. It's like this
would have been great like twelve years ago, like this
someone a great schedule at Lease, like in twenty fifteen
or twenty fourteen.
Speaker 3 (12:03):
I feel like I want to go back and look
at the recipes though, because there might be a couple
that I want to replicate.
Speaker 1 (12:09):
Oh and that's the things you got to look at
the recipes and yeah, and the Diana Rassini reference in
there is like whoa, Okay.
Speaker 3 (12:16):
Well, you know people were till I mean, we got
that notice this morning right that it was fair game.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
Yeah, oh yeah, yeah. The NFL said we're not going
to stop anybody from making a Diana Rassini might Vabel
reference in their release because it goes back to last
year where the who was it had the release for
the Dolphins and had Tyreek Hill late to a meeting
and then had Tyreek Hill getting arrested by the coast
Guard whatever it was. Yeah, we don't want that things
and not a Hey fair game for Racini and Vrabel.
Oh okay, Gret's out there.
Speaker 3 (12:43):
That's kind of interesting, right, that you actually put out
as Hey, just so you know you're gonna get some
of this now.
Speaker 1 (12:50):
I like the hidden part of it, but you can't
make me work too much for it. I think like
it made me work a little bit too.
Speaker 3 (12:55):
But that's the thing, right, is that you had to
stop to read each recipe because it was on the
note card, you know, in the little ring holder, and
it's like, all right, I just going recipe to recipe.
I don't necessarily get the details because if I'm thinking
it's just a recipe without some stark and funny one
liners in there, I'm just letting it play by.
Speaker 1 (13:14):
Yeah yeah, really, you gotta be able to hit me
with the entertainment. That's why, I mean, still the highest grade.
The only A plus we've given out is the Colts
with the Simpsons reference, and I was good and the
Browns reveal makes me want to just keep going back.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
I mean, we had ye, but I also want to
just start my All Simpsons rewatch.
Speaker 1 (13:34):
Oh yeah, yeah, when they go to the Browns game,
but he just goes Bory.
Speaker 3 (13:41):
Now I'm sixteen the Browns fuddy. We just broke down
the Browns release. Great, it was all Miles Garrett.
Speaker 1 (13:47):
Yeah it was. It was kind of a shot at Chador.
Can I play anybody up? No, you're just gonna play.
You're only gonna play Miles Garrett street fight. You're only
gonna play it. Exit out about a Fresca exit swollen
down The Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Carbon. Oh,
we got more from the NFL schedule. Lease coming up next,
something from a week one opening game that I will
give you a guarantee about. That's coming up next right here,

You get your podcasts, Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith
Show with my best friend, Mike Harmon, Hugh Aaron Rodgers, Happy,
NFL schedule release day yay, and uh you want one
long term NFL hot take coming off of what we've
(16:52):
seen the last few days, I'll give it to you
you're not going to win a game. No, no, that's not
a hot take. Take any under accurate, take very very Wait.
What's the overunder for wins for the Jets? Yeah? Four
and a half? Oh way under what there was no
hesitation saving? Now, oh yeah, I bet my house on it,
betting it all? Is that what we've seen? Now? Well,
(17:16):
like everyone's know what's next? What's next? Here's the NFL.
We're getting all these overseas games. Yeah yeah, yeah, but
you kind of see in a microcosm of what the
NFL did this week is what their plan is. Right,
So Thursday schedule release Day, but it's really schedule release
week because we get the first couple of games on Monday,
a little bit more on Tuesday, international games on Wednesday,
(17:38):
a few more games. You get some leaks out there.
Each team has their own leak of oh hey, this
is who we have week one, or this is who
we have on Halloween, or this is who we have
on Thanksgiving? What do you know something we just job
on Christmas? So each team gets a little bit of that, right,
they found a way to go from why do we
own schedule release day when we can own the entire week? Right?
(17:58):
NCAA tournament. In basketball, we're adding the seventy six teams.
Why why are we owning Thursday and Friday when we
can own Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday of that week. Why
why are we not doing that?
Speaker 3 (18:10):
You know, Okay, we're gonna go back and absolutely it's
real estate valuable.
Speaker 1 (18:14):
What have we started to see from the NFL? Right
all right now? In the last few years. The NFL
has gone from when you and I were kids, it
was all the games on Sunday, one game Monday night. Okay.
Then you got into the nineties and it was, okay,
we have Sunday Sunday Night. Because we didn't have Sunday night,
(18:36):
Sunday night in the night. That was Joe thisman and
Mike Patrick and those guys both bought Paul McGuire, Oh
my god, Paul McGuire was the best. I couldn't stand
the guy, but he was the best because he hated
the Jets. He hated the Jets. But we went from okay,
now we get Sunday night games half the year, and
half the year Thursday night games. That's where we're at
(18:58):
for the nineties into the two thousands. Now it's full
slate on Sunday night, full slate on Thursday, all the
way through. We have some Saturday games, right, We've got
a Black Friday game, all right. Now, It's not that
we're gonna get Friday, because Friday's Friday's a really rough
day for the NFL to say we're gonna put more
(19:18):
games on Friday, because and you still have you know,
and college football Saturday. But what have we seen? Now?
What are we getting a couple of games, just just
a little whisper of a couple of games on Wednesday.
We're getting the first game of the season Wednesday. We're
getting a Wednesday night before Thanksgiving game. The NFL is
(19:42):
now moving into Wednesdays. That's where they're going to go.
They own Sundays, they own Mondays, they own Thursdays that
we'll get, the Friday I'll get, but Wednesdays is where
they're gonna go. And it's not gonna be a case
of where suddenly we have a full Wednesday, late full
Thursday slate because Wednesday is a tough day. You can
pull it off as long as the teams are coming
off a bye and you can give them maybe the
(20:04):
Monday night games or something else. Or you can do
that a few times a year. You can't do it
all the time because it's two difficult schedule wise, teams
are gonna get upset. Well. But that's also where that
expansion we've opened to Wednesday night games we got to
this year. Maybe next year we're gonna get four Wednesday
night games. Then maybe we're at six. Like this is
the NFL is saying, why are we just owning certain
(20:27):
days when we can almost own every day. You can
even say, hey, we can give you Tuesday games too,
because if you have a short week where teams play
Sunday and come back and play Thursday, why can't they
play Tuesday and then come back and play Sunday. Right,
you can have that. So you're starting to see it.
But Wednesday makes sense because we can put this first
game of the year out there and and no one's
(20:49):
coming off anything. So you can play Wednesday the Thanksgiving
day the night before Thanksgiving. Okay, you're playing Wednesday said
to Thanksgiving during the day. Okay, it's weird, but you
had a long time after the bye after. Players will
like that they get to have Thanksgiving with their families.
Everybody gets back. Okay, we have it so, but that's
where the NFL is moving now. It's okay, we're moving outside.
We're giving you more international games, but we can only
(21:11):
give you so many international games. But now it's gonna
be days of the week because there's an appetite there.
And it's smart because the NFL you're realizing that you
don't need ten games or twelve games on Sunday. You
don't the NFL is saying, okay, we put twelve games
out there on Sunday when there's no boys, when there's buys.
Let's say we average nine or ten games that are
(21:31):
out there right, see anyway between ten and twelve games
a week on a Sunday, Why do we have that many?
Why are we putting our games out there where it's
more difficult for people to see them. Yes, people can
watch on red Zone, but he's gonna watch their local team.
You're gonna watch the big late game if you want to.
Sometimes you're flipping around, but there's no difference between nine
(21:52):
to twelve games and seven or eight games on a Sunday.
If you give me four games in early and three
games late, you can parcel other games out where people
are going to watch because think about the average NFL viewer. Right,
Let's just say me as a Jet fan, right, you
as a Bears fan. You're gonna watch the game wherever
it is. Right now, if the game is on Sunday
at one o'clock, that's gonna stop me from watching some
(22:14):
of the other games because I want to watch my team. Now.
I could watch on red Zone, but then again, if
I do that, am I getting the full experience? But
I'm gonna watch my team, right, So I watch my
team at one o'clock. Do I watch the other games?
Speaker 4 (22:25):
No?
Speaker 1 (22:25):
I'm watching my team at one o'clock. Okay, But if
you put the Jets on Thursday night, I'm watching the
Jets on Thursday night. What am I doing at one
o'clock on Sunday? I'm watching another game that is on.
You put the Bears on Wednesday night, You're watching the
Bears on Wednesday night. What are you doing on Sunday
at one o'clock? You're watching whatever games are on whatever.
The best game is Sunday at one o'clock. So the
(22:47):
NFL is realizing you don't need to have all of
these games on Sunday. You could as long as it's
a case where you have four games early because you
can get to the end of the season. There's three
late games, two late games, like you get to that point.
So if you're giving me, if you're giving me a
situation where hey, we're gonna play four games in the
early window, four games in a late window, right, the
three games late in the Sunday night game. You can
(23:08):
take these other games and you can have two games
on Thursday night. You can have two games on Tuesday
night if you want to, the staggered Monday night anything
you want to there. And that's where the NFL is saying,
we have such amount of product, why are we limiting
what people can see whereas we if we as long
as we have enough and people feel like they are
getting enough football on Sunday, because that's one thing. You
(23:30):
never want people on Sunday to feel like I'm not
quite getting the football that I need on Sunday. Right,
there's not not enough games. As long as people are
getting served, to the to the to the satiated on Sunday,
you can take all of these games and move them
a different days.
Speaker 3 (23:42):
Well, but that was one of the pieces that started
floating around bit by bit social mediasm you know, on
my scroll and walking the dogs. Like, all right, everybody's
starting to complain, You're you're ruining the sanctity of Sunday.
It's like, No, what you're saying is we don't have
a crappy game.
Speaker 1 (23:59):
Now.
Speaker 3 (23:59):
We can all argue about what ranks two hundred and
seventy second in your giant schedule, but the reality is
they're all very viable commercial products, even the worst of
a live NFL game, for betting, for fantasy, for just involvement.
People will sit and watch an NFL game. So if
(24:21):
you can do standalone, why do you have to bundle? Generally,
when you're bundling a bunch of stuff, there is a
product that's lesser that you've decided. All right, it's kind
of a throw in because we really want you to
watch or take on products A and B, But I
gotta give you part C because that's going to push
you over because now you think you're getting value. No, No,
the NFL. All of these are valuable. So if you
(24:43):
could find specific windows to each of them. As we've
talked about parsing it out, and let's talk about the inevitability.
We broached it a bit with Jason cole last hour
is that eventually you're moving this schedule.
Speaker 1 (24:56):
There's going to be an.
Speaker 3 (24:56):
Eighteenth week or eighteenth week of game all right, and
nineteenth maybe eventually you go full twenty. Right, that's what's
in the CBA, and eventually you'll fight about that. But
whether that means there's also gonna be bye weeks right
a second by that's gonna come in, which means you
get to move some of that inventory around because divisions
and there's four teams off here, three four whatever whatever
(25:20):
it is week to week, so you get to play
and have the puppets on the string. And when you've
got all these different providers coming to the table with
hundreds of millions of dollars like, oh yeah, we can
take you that game, what does that leave us on Sunday?
Speaker 1 (25:34):
You got three?
Speaker 3 (25:35):
Yeah, threes enough? I mean the attention span of folks,
they can't keep flipping around. It'll keep the red zone
folks on their toes a little bit, but you'll get
a truer representation of those actual games as opposed to
feeling like you're gave your remote control to your TV
to your two year old, where it's just flipping flipping flipping,
all right, and there was nothing go flip it again
(25:58):
and toy story. But he's got it, keep going brdamn.
But but it's just that idea. All of these are
valuable propositions. So why give it away in a bundle
form where it's all right, you're getting the best of
no no, no, no no, I can get you for three
hours and here I'll sell you another device while I'm
at it to watch it. So I we'll have more
(26:19):
on the on the NFL schedule lease coming up in
a few minutes.
Speaker 1 (26:23):
Right, We're gonna continue to give you the grades, right
as we've had some c's, but really big injury news
today and I know this is flying under the radar
and it shouldn't. Malik Neighbors now the Giants after a
knee procedure that cleans out scar tissue in his knee.
Remember you had the big injury last year, knocked out
(26:44):
for the entire year. He has now gone from well,
the Giants hopefully get him back to the beginning of
training camp. Okay, that's fine, Wide receiver being a training camp,
You're fine now. It's he is hopeful to be back
by the start of the season. Whoa a danger Row
Robinson danger. Molik Neighbors has gone from beginning of the
training camp, which is coming up in about a month
(27:06):
and a half a little bit less a month and
a half. Now it's maybe he's back by the start
of the season, and all of a sudden, a Giants
team that has so much going for it, right with
Jackson Dard in year two, they added a couple of weapons. Uh,
you know, they had a really good tight end the
move to Harbaugh's head coach, like, they have all kinds
(27:26):
of pieces that any coach would foam at the mouth
to be there in charge of. But make no mistake
about it, Molik Neighbors is the guy that makes this
offense go and will be the guy to make this
offense go because you take him out and suddenly all
of those other supplementary pieces, you go, ooh, okay, gonna
be tough because as many good pieces the Giants had
(27:48):
last year, they could win games, right, and they could
have as good you know, look, you had Cam Scattaboo,
who is gonna be more of a thunder and lightning
the thunder guy in the back makes he's not a
guy that he's not Derrick Henry right, He's not somebody
that's gonna be, Oh, we're gonna give them the football
twenty five times a game. You take Malik Neighbors out
(28:09):
of the mix, and suddenly the Giants just look like, ooh,
they're gonna struggle. I don't know that there's a guy
that means more to his look at this year coming
in that means more to his team than what Neighbors
can give them coming off of this injury like this,
the Giants can be a play stuff works for the Giants,
they could be a playoff team. This offense can light
(28:30):
it up. But all of a sudden, on offense, who
are you worried about? Right? If Neighbors is not on
the field, who are you worried about? Like he showed
you as a rookie, I'm gonna be one of the
best wide receivers in the game for a decade now,
I mean really, you take him away and you look
at the Giants weapons and you go, ooh, this might
be tough for Jackson Darton here too.
Speaker 3 (28:48):
One hundred and nine receptions twelve hundred yard seven scores
in that rookie season for what was a lackluster offense.
We saw it last year and in spurts when Dart
wasn't in the tent when Scatabo was healthy, and then
Neighbors had eighteen catches in his four games with a
couple of scores before he went down. So now you're
(29:08):
trying to rebuild. You bring in Isaiah Likely and a
bunch of guys who've been second or third somewhere else,
Calvin Austin, Darnol Mooney. You did make a draft pick
in the third round, so you're hoping to catch lightning
in a bottle there. But to your point, you don't
have that one a guy, and it becomes a much
more bogged down offense without that game breaker, which becomes
(29:30):
it'll be curious to watch because the division in theory
is there to go get right. Cowboys stub their toe.
Don't know if you're gonna get Micah Parsons, how early
he's gonna be back on the field.
Speaker 1 (29:42):
All right, he's gone. I'm sorry.
Speaker 3 (29:44):
He's in Green Bay and they're waiting on him. Just
as the train of thought here, but we know their
defense struggled. They're rebuilding. Dak Prescott in the offense always fordable,
but you go through the rest of the division.
Speaker 1 (29:59):
It's an eight and.
Speaker 3 (30:00):
Eight, nine and eight, ten and seven wins you the
division and for the Giants, if they're healthy, you can
get there.
Speaker 1 (30:08):
But I don't know that you have enough.
Speaker 3 (30:11):
So can they go make a deal because you still
have some of these wide receivers that are rumored to
be in the mix. Obviously you're not gonna go in
division Philadelphia and whatever happens with aj Brown, But can
they go make a deal to bring in a guy?
Speaker 1 (30:26):
Right?
Speaker 3 (30:26):
We talked to Tyreek Hill a little bit earlier in
what the past schedule releases.
Speaker 1 (30:31):
He's still out there, so I mean potentially, I don't know,
like what what can you find out to help supplement
if Neighbors isn't ready? Yeah? I mean really that that's what.
There's definitely teams where you take away their best playmaker
and you go, oh man, that's that. That can be
some struggle, but Neighbors really it lays bear everything to
(30:53):
the Giants where so much is predicated on his return
to make this offense go. I mean all of a sudden,
now you're the Giants like whoa, whoa, maybe he's ready
for week one? Like wow, Like this is a sneaky,
big story.
Speaker 3 (31:04):
Yeah, second surgery to clean out scar tissue. That's that's
not the news you needed. But it's schedule release day,
so it can get buried a little bit.
Speaker 1 (31:12):
Let's let's let this news get out now, then we'll
give them the release.
Speaker 3 (31:15):
Of course, I'm putting guys back on their team because
I'm watching schedule release and conflating stuff, so anything's possible.
Speaker 1 (31:22):
Time how to find out what's trending in the wide
world of sports with someone who's been also grading all
of the NFL schedule release parties, and she's given her
own Saints an A plus, it's.
Speaker 4 (31:34):
I'm actually giving them like a B minus.
Speaker 1 (31:36):
A B minus. Yeah, I wasn't.
Speaker 4 (31:38):
Too like thrilled, but maybe because I don't actually live
in New Orleans, so I can't really like the like
the local weather you know, meteorologist, Like I don't have
like a you know, like a connection to them because
I don't live there, which is kind of bad, but
it's like thought, it's like a really cool idea, so
I can kind of like, you know, B minus.
Speaker 1 (31:57):
It's not a C.
Speaker 4 (31:58):
It's not an A.
Speaker 1 (31:58):
It's like a B. You had to introducing everything that
they did.
Speaker 4 (32:04):
But like the Rams have the Napoleon Dynamite thing, like
that whole that entire thing was so good and I
hate the Rams and I can even say that.
Speaker 1 (32:13):
In that glass bleach.
Speaker 4 (32:16):
Yeah see, like that's just like that's so like heartwarming
and nostalgic to me, you know, which is kind of weird.
But yeah, that's just that's just my personal opinion. But
speaking of the schedule releases, some of the other matchups
coming up. Obviously, we have the Super Bowl sixty rematch
between the Patriots and the Seahawks on Wednesday, September ninth,
(32:36):
for the first time ever. We're gonna with Thanksgiving Eve
game between the Packers and the Rams, and the Rams
are leading the way with seven primetime games in twenty
twenty six. The Packers, the Chiefs, the Bills, and the
Seahawks they all have six, while the Jets, the Titans,
the Raiders, the Cardinals, and the Dolphins they have no
primetime games. And golf, Scottie Scheffler has a share of
(32:57):
the lead after the first round of the PGA Championship
at three under par. Rory McElroy is seven shots back
at four over after eighteen holes. In the NHL playoffs
right now, the Golden Knights have defeated the Ducks five
to one to advance to the Western Conference Finals for
the fourth time in nine years and earlier. The Canadians
have taken a three to two series lead after defeating
(33:18):
the Stables six to three. In baseball, Kyle Schwarber hit
his eighteenth home run of the season as the Phillies
defeated the Red Sox three to one. The Cubs avoided
the sweep and shut out the Braves two nothing. In
the White Sox have won five straight after defeating the
Royals six to two. Right now, the Dodgers are outscoring
the Giants five to two. It is the top of
(33:39):
the eighth inning in La.
Speaker 1 (33:41):
Back to you guys, thanks a bunch, you see. The
Giants need to hit the ball more towards taoscar Hernandez.
Just slap it the other way. Game. Hit it to left,
hit it to left, all right at him. Final hit
it the left. Coming up next. We got more from
NFL schedule release day. We look at one specific game
from week one and we'll tell you what quarterback better
(34:03):
be starting that game. That's next right here, Jason and
Mike Fox Sports Radio. I really hope it's Russell Wilson. Stop.
Don't put that out there. Don't put that evil out there,
Ricky Bobby.
Speaker 2 (34:16):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.
Speaker 1 (34:25):
Fox Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show with my best
friend Mike Harmon. In his NFL schedule release day, we're
giving out grades to all the schedule release It's a
big party, man. It's a great atmosphere. Oh, there's no question.
Speaker 3 (34:42):
The music keeps playing. The band strikes up and away
we go.
Speaker 1 (34:45):
Oh, I know the logo for that team. That's the
that's the Cowboys. Oh no, it's the Cults. Okay, all
right's great. But Jason, I spelled jets j T Jets.
I was waiting for that. That's still the best one.
Titans fans trying to identify the logos of the other
(35:07):
teams with the Fox sting after everyone is just genius.
It's just genius. But groups, I know, that's the uh,
Florida South Florida Fish and Florida South Florida Fish. One
(35:29):
game that stand We talked about some individual games that
stand out so far this year. Week one, the Dolphins
and the Raiders. Okay, week one, there are two amazing
Tankathon games for next year for Arch Manning Dante More
Jets and the Titans, Dolphins and the Raiders. Right now,
the Raiders already have their guy in theory in Fernando Mendoza.
(35:51):
If he is not starting Week one, something is really wrong.
I know that the Raiders want to bring him along,
and that's the whole reason without and got Kirk Cousins
and signed this ridiculously stupid long contract. Fernando Mendoza is
the number one pick in the draft. If he's not
ready to start Week one, there is something wrong because
that's who you draft number one overall, a guy that's
(36:12):
ready to go in and play week one. I don't
care if he's a quarterback. I know you want to
protect him and you want to be as careful as
you can. This is the NFL, man, you gotta get
him on the field. If the guy is a quarterback
and he goes number one, he should be able to
win the job. And if he's not, then that's a problem.
And all of a sudden, I'm thinking maybe Mendoza, the
bestius is an average quarterback, because if he can't win
(36:34):
the job over Kirk Cousins. If he can't be a
guy to start week one, you're the number one pick. There,
I get it. If you are a second round pick,
a third round pick, Hey, picking up the offense. I
was out of the shotgun all the time in college.
It's a different thing. No, I understand all that you
need some time before you go. But everybody plays early.
But the number one pick, he's a quarterback. He always plays.
He doesn't sit anymore. Guys they are taken late in
(36:55):
the first round now only sit maybe four weeks before
they're giving a chance. Well, they gotta come and play
now they're a first rounder. If he's not ready week one,
or they keep him out week one, that's a thing
because that tells me that, Okay, they overdrafted Mendoza and
all the polarization of him as of a product from Hey,
he's a guy that could come in and be an
(37:16):
All Pro for ten years or low. He's a guy
coming in that maybe he's not the quarterback in a
couple of years. All of that is right. He needs
to be the guy week one, and you're never gonna
get any softer opening than at home Week one. Against
a team that is tanking, it's not gonna get any
You always look for what's the soft spot to start
our quarterback. Sometimes it's week one, Week one at home
(37:36):
against the Dolphins, where it's the Dolphins, the Jets, probably
the Browns, but the Dolphins, the Jets, the Browns, and
the Titans who are all to be fighting for that
number one pick. It doesn't get easier if you're the Raiders.
Then in game one, week one at home against a
team that's tanking.
Speaker 3 (37:51):
Raiders at home, the Dolphins come to town. Riddle me this,
Jason Smith, what do you think the points spread is
for that game?
Speaker 1 (38:00):
Dolphins?
Speaker 3 (38:00):
The Raiders have spent boy, countless millions of dollars augmenting
a roster that already had a couple of stars. Max
Crosby's back. Gent he had a pretty good let you
to hang on, hang on, hang on, Yes, Max Crosby
is back. At least the schedule releases where they took
shots at people.
Speaker 1 (38:20):
What do you think I would say, Boy, both those
teams are absolutely terrible. I would say it is the
Raiders by a field goal. It is a field good game.
Speaker 3 (38:28):
Okay, it is a field goal game for a team
that spent a lot of money, added a bunch of
talent against the team that's tanking, and for some reason
just gave their running back a sixty four million dollar deal.
I love a Chan. I do congratulations to him, his family,
everybody associated with with teamm Chan. That deal makes no
(38:49):
damn sense because it also hamstrings you, now if you
try to go make a deal.
Speaker 1 (38:53):
Yeah. But here's the thing though, is that the tanking
in the NFL is not quite what tanking in the
end I get. The NBA is like, are you tanking?
Oh yeah, yeah at one hundred percent. You see, we're
not putting our guys out there right now. The NFL
is no, No, we're not tank. Look, we just gave
money to our running back. He's gonna be our big weapon. Okay,
knowing full well that Devon A Chan's not gonna win
(39:15):
them five games, six games. I mean, if we can,
we're gonna stick with him.
Speaker 3 (39:18):
It's okay, No, it's here's a bunch of money to
get your ass kicked behind a bad, bad squad. But
all that to say, you know the Mendoza thing, You
and I differ in terms if he's not ready, he's
not ready. That's why he brought Kirk Cousins in. Either
that or he's a very highly priced tutor, you know,
mentor mentee kind of thing going on.
Speaker 1 (39:37):
He's playing week one. There is something wrong. There is
really something wrong. If Mendoza can't win the job week one.
Mendoza touched his drum set and caused problems. I mean, TJ. Clearly,
the Mendoza line is set for Week one in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (39:52):
No, I mean it.
Speaker 3 (39:53):
I I understand where you're coming from for this. But
if their idea is this is the game eventually that
we don't need to force feed this and he can
go out and he can win the job, and certainly
if he presents himself well as they get into mini
camp and into all their training camp efforts and everything,
(40:15):
then yeah, he'll be the guy week one. I just
think you went out of your way to get yourself
what was in the marketplace. Even if he's a diminished
and elder statesman and Kirk Cousins, you can argue, even
at what he showed you in in spots last year,
he's still a better backup than what ninety percent of
the league carries.
Speaker 1 (40:35):
Yeah, No, he is he No, he is great, But
do you need to go give him the kind of contract.
Here's a five year deal with all kinds of crimes.
I then, which tells me that you're ready to love Fernanzo,
which again tells me that how much do you really
believe in Fernando Mendoza that he needs to that he
needs time, then he needs more time. He shouldn't need time.
And if if you, if you're thinking about taking a
(40:57):
guy number one overall in the draft, you think he
needs time, guess what, He's not the number one pick
in the draft. We know that. But otherwise yeah, yeah, yeah,
we saw that today in the schedule release. But like that,
that's the whole thing is that I feel like, as
we're going along here, the Raiders are telling us he's
not gonna be ready, and I'm like, there's no excuse
to not be ready. There's no excuse for him to
(41:19):
not be ready. What else do you want of a quarterback?
He won the national championship, he won the Heisman Trophy,
led them all, he had the big leap from junior
or senior year. The year in Indiana, he was good
at Cow and you're telling me he's not ready. Terrible
and you're telling me he's not gonna be ready to
play for the Raiders, where you're not even talking about
winning games. It's just hey, let's get out there and
get you going so you know eventually the team can
(41:39):
get good. He's not good enough to play for you,
really like, I mean, that's a huge red flag, man. Yeah,
but it's a great story percolating in the background. It's
a great story for everybody, but the Raiders.
Speaker 3 (41:51):
Well, I'm not worried about the Raiders. I'm worried about
our national audience here on Fox Sports Radio and for
you and I and are Entertainment here in.
Speaker 1 (41:59):
The booth exit ot Vuta Fresca, Exit Swollen Dome. Coming
up next, more grades on the NFL schedule, releases, who
are getting a's Who's failing Next Fox
