social media, go get it. So what is next for

than a man who has been going through Summer League
with a fine tooth comb in attendance. He's on Twitter

they pay me for. But again, I'm also booied by
the fact that I can still find new Nicks playoffs
content on social media every day that I've never seen before.

No, no, it was amazing, it was surprising. It was
not surprising at all. No, we moved on. I didn't watch.
I did watch the Knicks play, but they weren't first
and foremost on my list. I didn't get to see
just about every every quality. I don't know if I

saw every first round pick.

I certainly saw.

Like the first ten, eleven, the first dozen, let's say,
the lottery picks.

And this is supposed to be a generational.

Draft, so I was really curious.

And you know what's funny is in looking at the
top day four picks, certainly, which which was the first
tier of talent. Right, We're talking to Aj Debotsa, We're
talking Darren Peterson, Cam Boozer, and Caleb Wilson, and that
was the top tier. And the feeling was like, you
can't go wrong. And as I'm watching them play and

I'm thinking about the teams that they're with.

It could go it could.
Speaker 5 (03:36):
Go wrong for every single one of them.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
Wow, well who impressed you?
Speaker 8 (03:40):
Not for them necessarily, but the teams they played for?

Right, who impressed you the most of you saw? Though?

Look aj Debouca, legitimately what had was should have been
number one, the number one pick. He showed an array
of skills. He outplayed Darren Peterson by a long stretch.
I'm just thinking that the Banca would be He's a
great culture setter, he plays hard, he's spirited. Uh, they

had him playing point guard bringing it up and I thought, man,
they really got it right. And then I thought, he's
going to be playing with Trey Young and Anthony Davis.

How is that gonna work?
Speaker 6 (04:20):
Because the Jazz made a run and the Bansa was
like on his teammates, Hey, we got to play we
got to play harder. He clearly wants everybody to meet
his energy and he is a feisty, spirited, competitive guy.
The Washington Wizards will love love having him, the Washington
Wizards fans. But like Trey Young and Anthony Davis, are

they going to be okay with the Bansa like getting
on them because they don't always play with that that
sort of intensity. I just I don't know how that
chemistry is going to work. And then Darren Peterson, the
whole idea was that they where he was going to
play point guard. He could not handle the physicality. He
struggled mightily, and this is Summer League where he couldn't

handle the physicality. He's a great shot maker. I think
he can be a quality two, but he's not a one.
And now that you're if he's not a one, well
you already have Cante George there, you got Ace Bailey,
you got you got to feed Laurie Markinen, you got
Jaron Jackson like they need, they need him to be
a point guard, and I don't know that he is.

Cam booz was a lot better than I thought. I
think he was the most intelligent of the of the
four and the way he played, But how's he going
to play next to Zachie Edie, those guys I could
see getting torched on the pick and roll. And then
finally Caleb Wilson was my was my guy who I thought.
You know what, I'm a little worried about Daron.
Speaker 7 (05:46):
Peterson because of the Kansas issues.
Speaker 6 (05:49):
Cam Boozer is a safe pick, but I don't know
what his upside is. Caleb Wilson is the guy after
a Javan said that I would take and then I
saw him play and I was like, oh, wildly talented,
but place hard, place fast does not play smart, and
that will undercut everything else that he does. So I
(06:12):
had to back off, and I'm thinking Keaton Wagler or
Darius Acuff. There was four Kingston Flemings, there were four
of Michel Brown Junior. There were like four guards taken
after that, all of whom played a very composed game.
I went from thinking I would take Caleb Wilson number
two to thinking I might have taken one of those

guards number four if it was my choice. That's how
much my opinion of Caleb Wilson's flip. Again, wildly talented,
but man, his decision making incredibly suspect. And so I'm
looking at all four picks and I'm like, talent wise,
I'm not going to question what they have.

It's just the fit with who took them.
Speaker 6 (06:56):
It'll be very interesting to see how that plays out well.

As I'm sitting here at Bull's shirt, that doesn't make
me feel so great. A bit you know did Jim,

Like I've looked at the moves that the Bulls have made,
like Norman Powell.

I liked that pick.

They've done it getting Claxton. I thought that was that
was a nice move. I liked their moves, and I
thought Caleb Wilson, man, that's.

Let's let me let me do that because it is
one Summer League game. It's only one game, but it's
more where I had him versus what I saw. I
was over the moon on Caleb Wilson, and now I've
backed off a little bit.

So are you waiting with baited breath and hitting refresh
a million times a minute like Adam Silver so you
can finish the schedule on Lebron James decision?
Speaker 5 (07:49):
Uh No, well no I'm not.
Speaker 6 (07:52):
I'm not, although I will say when like Steve Kerr,
you know, we had this Steve Kerr episode that's classic
Steve Curve.
Speaker 8 (07:59):

Oh yeah, we got him, we got him.

Put it out there like that's that's Steve Kerr poking
fun at the whole thing.

I'm going to hold to what I've said all along.
I just I don't see him in.

I don't see Lebron's too smart to be in the
Western Conference. He wants, he wants to at least think
that he has a shot at getting to the conference finals,
maybe the finals. The only way he does that if
he stays in the East and and.

And here we talked.

I think we talked about it last time. And it
only as this drags out, it only deepens the wound
if he doesn't go back to Cleveland.
Speaker 5 (08:33):
Like I just if he goes back to Miami. He
picked Miami twice over Cleveland.
Speaker 6 (08:39):
Come on, Philadelphia, And the biggest problem here is everybody
has spent their money and so we're looking at Lebron
signing a minimum deal. I think most of the teams
have two roster spots left so they could fit bronni
(09:00):
and Lebron in. But this is like nobody has saved
any money to make an offer that is better than
anybody else's. Golden State and Cleveland, because Harden and Draymond
Green opted out, have some wigle room. But those guys
(09:20):
did that under the assumption that they were going to
be signed back on longer term deals. And they're not
going to take some massive steep discount. Draymond Green opted
out of twenty almost twenty eight million. I'm sure he's
expecting that his next deal is going to be twenty plus,
which leads very little room to make a notable off
(09:44):
to Lebron. And then you're going to be paying heavy
tax and some of your you know, you're moving into
the second apron. And same thing with James Harden Harbin
opted out of forty two million. I can't see him
taking anything less than thirty five on a new deal.
So it's there aren't a whole lot of you know,
(10:04):
for for as many teams that are saying like, yeah,
we we take we can fit Lebron in, we we
take Lebron, and guys coming out and saying it, they're
saying it, but they didn't, you know, financially, what they're
doing is we'll take him, and we'll take.

Him on our terms, which is a which is.
Speaker 5 (10:22):
A minimum deal.
Speaker 6 (10:23):
And uh, you know how how Lebron handles that what
he decides is most worth to him. I just I
don't see as far as a finish like how anything
beats going back to Cleveland.

You know, Rick, to look at this from a little
bit different side because we've had time now because you
know Lebron likes all this attention that he's going to have.
Speaker 6 (10:43):
Is that no, no he doesn't good, no he doesn't.
Speaker 1 (10:48):
He just retire that reas in I mean going through
free agency. I kind of I kind of get the
sense overall a lot of contending teams are teams that
think they're contend have a little bit of a cat
that ate the Canary smile going on, like, hey, there's
still some big things that are gonna happen. And maybe

it's a Lebron James when he decides to sign, But
I get I get the sense that we're not done
with the big names moving and big and big deals
happening over the course of the rest of the summer,
just because I can't believe that some of these teams
that think, hey, we're this close to a championship are
done and they say, yes, we're done going in. This
what we're gonna This is what the Pistons are gonna
look like. This is what the Cavs are gonna look like.
(11:29):
This is what the Heat's gonna look like. This is
what the Nuggets are gonna look like. All this stuff,
I just get a sense that there's gonna be some
big movement, and I can throw in something like maybe
the Spurs decide, hey, we can't bring the Aaron Fox back.
We have to you know, hartburn Castle augh to get
all the minutes, and after the NBA Finals, we got
to move on. But I just get the sense that
maybe Lebron is the kickstart of this. But I think
there's gonna be a second phase of some big moves
(11:52):
over the course of the rest of the summer.
Speaker 6 (11:53):
Well, it's a fair point, and I'm not gonna say
that there are teams. I mean, Detroit has Jalen Are
a restricted free agent out there, and you know how
that plays out. And I do think that they need
they need something. Benedict Mathern is out there restricted free agent.
Speaker 5 (12:16):
But the but the.
Speaker 6 (12:17):
Great difficulty is that the combination of the last two
collective bargaining agreements have essentially created.
Speaker 5 (12:26):
A hard tap.
Speaker 6 (12:27):
And so while I think there, I think you're right
and that there are teams out there that, if they
really want to put themselves firmly in the title contender category,
need to make another move. Making a big move is
going to be so challenging because you have to have

the contracts match up perfectly. And so that's where that's
where it's going to be difficult, in in in those
teams getting that done. And so I don't know if
I could see most still being made.

I don't know if it's going to be this summer.
And I really don't know.

That Lebron is a game changer at this point. I know, Jannis,
you know there was a clip of Giannis fearful that.
Speaker 5 (13:20):
He was going to Cleveland again.

I just look at the contenders and how they've approached this,
and if they thought that Lebron was really the game changer,
then if you're Philadelphia, do you go out and sign
Dean Wade and Anthony Simon's and basically leave yourself no
wiggle room to make an offer.

I mean, if you.
Speaker 6 (13:45):
Wanted to go get Lebron, if you really thought he
was a piece, the last piece, then why not save
that what twenty thirty million that they paid Dean Wade
to give to dangle in front of Lebron's so that, hey,
you know what, You're not going to get fifty like
you did last year, but we can give you far

more than anybody else, can. I just I haven't seen
that happen, which is why it makes me think that
the teams at least are not looking at him as
the piece that puts them over the top.

Since we're talking a little bit on the business of it,
last week David Kelly was talking about it and criticizing
all of it and talking about the second apron and
how restrictive. Is there any chance they try to go
back and reopen the books to make create a second
a different system to alleviate these issues.

Honestly, I think the owners love where this is.
Speaker 8 (14:43):
Sure.

I think that they.

I think, and my theory is the combination of twenty
seventeen where they introduced the Supermax and this CBA which
introduced the harsh heart penalties for going too far over
the cap, the combination and I'm spitballing here. I haven't

talked to anybody about this theory, but I don't think
that the owners enjoyed twenty ten the summer of player
empowerment when they were dancing to the tune of all
those superstar players.

And the last.

Two cbas have effectively.

Put the control, the financial control.

And the ability to say, hey, we'd love to pay
you more.

But we simply can't.

And if you want, I mean, because now we have
look where we are. Shake Hills Is, Alexander Jalen Brunson
and now Victor Webbin Yama have all taken less than
they could could could make because if they do take
the Max or the Supermax, they know that their teams
are going to be hamstrung to build championship caliber teams

around them. So the owners have the players go against
the superstar players, negotiagating against themselves, like, well, we can
pay you the Supermax, but we're not gonna be able
to give you.

A whole lot of help.

Or you take less and we'll try to get you

Like I think they're perfectly happy with the way things

League Baseball, and that's one it. Our road begins with
that first step. Yeah, let's go all right, But the
numbers are in for the MLB Home Run Derby and
it was just over five million people watching the home
run Derby. It was the lowest home run Derby rated
since two thousand and three, and not far off of

the home Run Derby from two years ago. Now this
was on Netflix compared to ESPNS. There's a change here
and everything else, but the lowest rated home run Derby
since two thousand and three. Now, as we've said, because
there's a different take here other than what do you do? Yes,
we know it's done. Casting for the home run Derby's
don't cast for the alsto games. All the stuff you've
heard a thousand times. The home run Derby is what

it is. They'll continue to try to do tweaks to
it to try to get more people to watch. Obviously,
if there's players that people have heard of once in
a while, you'll get a big You'll get a big
player to come in and be in the derby and hit.

Yeah, it happens.

But the big takeaway for me, quite honestly, is that, Okay,
so two years ago you add just over five million
people watching, right, better last year when Calroly won. But
this is the lowest since two thousand and three, five thousand.
That's back where was five thousand. But for me, the
number is more okay, it's just about what it was

two years ago when this thing was on NETFLI, when
this thing was on Netflix this year compared to ESPN
two years ago, this tells me what I have always
said about events on television, streaming shows, sporting events that
change location, change networks, change everything. You hear from different

networks when they talk about ratings for something, they always
get well, people had a tough time finding this.
Speaker 3 (22:10):
People have a tough time finding they didn't know where
it was. They didn't know where it was.
Speaker 1 (22:13):
Maybe people didn't know where it was on net Now,
the fact that we had five million people a couple
of years ago watch it on ESPN and you had
five billion people watch it on Netflix tells me people
knew where to find it.
Speaker 8 (22:24):
Now they found it.
Speaker 1 (22:25):
People knew where to find it. Right, if people want
something bad enough, they will find it now. The beginning
of the Home Run Derby. I completely get if the
audience is not what it is after like a half hour,
because it's like my dad who called me saying, hey,
where's a Home Run Derby?
Speaker 5 (22:40):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (22:40):
Dad, it's on Netflix. Oh okay, So my dad has
to go to Netflix and you boot up Netflix. It
takes probably ninety seconds to turn it on. So I
completely get where, Oh maybe I don't get it right away.
I have to get out what I'm doing. I have
to go find it.
Speaker 3 (22:51):
So the very beginning of an.
Speaker 1 (22:52):
Event, I get where maybe people aren't watching, but people
want to watch it. They're tuning in ten minutes late,
fifteen minutes late. You see the overall ratings. I never
thought it was a big deal where people said, oh
I can't find this that that's like, that's an argument
that I think worked like twenty five years ago. And
I don't think that even with all the streaming services
that are out there now and people know where to
(23:15):
find and I think most people have the majority of
streaming services right Most people that want to that that
are watched televin that are interested at least have Netflix
and Amazon Prime. I mean I have all of them, honestly,
except for except for Disney, which is weird. We used
to watch Disney all the time. Inter the kids get
older and looking for the better, the programming just hasn't
(23:36):
been there. But like all the other ones, yea, the
Paramount Plus and MGM plus full on, Like I have
all of them because they all have programs I want
to see or hey, you know, this is what we do.
We stay home much more. They're much more choices for
us now than they're ever worse, so staying home is
a lot easier. And yeah, there's the there's the bit
(23:58):
of a reorganization of the streaming services. Not everyone is
gonna make it all the way through because they're they're
kind of cutting into each other.
Speaker 8 (24:06):
You see some of the bundling that's going on. Hey,
pair up with this with this HBO.
Speaker 3 (24:11):
Max, what if I've already got them off?
Speaker 1 (24:13):
HBO Max will team up with Amazon, and Netflix will
team up with Apple, whatever it's gonna be. So there
is gonna be some reor going on over the next
few years because look, not of them, not a lot
of them are making as much as they could be making.
But the streaming giants are still doing really really well.
So so for sports wise, they're still going to spend
this money because they're making the money that they are
(24:34):
and we can afford to have this right. We can
spend one hundred million dollars in this football game. Why
because we made a hundred million dollars last week on
this new movie that came out. Oh okay, yeah, so
we're all good. But I never thought it was it
was a thing where people couldn't find it. If people
want to find something, they will find it easy enough.
And streaming is there for all of us now, and
(24:54):
it's it's very easy to have a streaming service and
then to get rid of it. It's not like it
was when you and I were in our twenties in
early thirties, where they said, I like to cancel HBO. Okay,
well that's gonna go into effect at the end of
this month, and then if you want it back, well
it's it's gonna go the end of this month, another
two weeks. As my dad would always call and say, Oh,
you gotta do is flip a button. Why can't you
flip that button right now on HBO right now? So

it's much easier to cancel, come back, cancel, come back
that the streaming services make it easy. So sometimes the
whole evil of stuff going to streaming services is a
little overrated and you don't need any more instance other
than hey, here's five million people watched on Netflix this year,
when five million people watch on ESPN a couple of years.
Speaker 8 (25:33):
Yeah, I mean look to your point. If you really
want something, and that's in anything you're doing, I really
want it, you're gonna go find it. And for a
home run Derby very specific. This is you know what
you're getting, right, So it's not like you're suddenly gonna
get an onslaught of new viewers to it. So you're
(25:54):
not expecting the numbers to jump. Nothing crazy happen. You
change some of the rules, fine, and you got more
stars involve, which was great, right, and Schwarber in Philly
or a Commie was back. He had a bunch of
the young stars whatever else. But when it's all said
and done, all of these streaming services, I don't know
what the the average number that people subscribe to. I'm
(26:17):
a britt Box, you're an MGM plus. But we we
get to that that same end game with the number
like if you have.

If you don't have britt Box, something on BritBox eventually
will get picked up by Amazon.
Speaker 8 (26:28):
That's something, right, Or one show you like is going
to it leaves this day, like guess what, twenty four
hours later it's the featured program on another Yeah, Gilbour
Girls just left Netflix and now it's hey, here we
are on Pride.
Speaker 1 (26:43):
How I watched from Right Right and from is a
great show. It's it's my god, it's so much fun
and it was an MGM plus show for a while.
We're watching on there, watching it, and then all of
a sudden, you can watch it here. Amazon's got it
and like, oh so now three.
Speaker 8 (26:59):
Service that's subcontract it out. You can get it in
and whatever. For sports, the part that's still enticing is
the live because you can get the lower third and
whatever ads that you eventually will see on all these
programming choices. But you've got to have proof of concept
of what audience is showing up, and then you start
(27:21):
going into the secondary parts of it with your title
sponsors and everything else.

I would say if I had to say this, because
I think way more people have streaming than you think
do right, Like, overall you the oh now it's going
to streaming, and suddenly we're hiding it behind all these walls.
I would think the average television consumer right, because you're
not watching TV unless you don't love it. I think
everybody has Netflix, Amazon, Apple, and HBO Max. I think
(27:50):
everybody has those four. Those are the ones have all
the big programs on it. They have all the Emmy shows,
they have all the comedies, they have all the big dramas. Look,
Netflix and Amazon they're the two top dogs. Then right
under it, then then would probably come Apple. Then you
would have HBO Max. As far as when you talk
about relevance and what shows they have, and then after that,
I could see where people are picking and choosing. Maybe
(28:11):
it's MGM Plus, maybe it's brit Box, maybe it's something else,
maybe it's AMC. Then you can say, okay, then you
get a little bit of more personal preference. But I
think everybody has those four And guess what these are?
All the games are, this, where all the sporting events are,
this where they go. People are finding this, people have them.
There's nothing to be afraid of if you're if the
sports are going to streaming, because it's an inevitability that
(28:32):
it's going to happen. And yet you're gonna say, oh,
I'm paying so I got to pay to watch the
NFL because let's say Netflix gets it, right, Oh, I
gotta pay to watch NFLF. Well, you probably have to
pay a little bit more, but you're paying for Netflix anyway.
Most likely you're paying for Netflix anyway, or you were.
Speaker 8 (28:46):
Playing paying for cable at one point and you were
paying for all of this.
Speaker 3 (28:50):
Yeah, the other is paying eighty nine dollars.

If I told you I found a hack that someone
put up the other day during the Homer journey, I'm like,

of wow, that was awful. Yeah, but you didn't pay
seventy bucks for it.

If you subscribe to Paramount Plus, what is it ten
bucks a month? Yeah, you get so you get that,
you get your Criminal Minds or whatever other shows you're.

hundred and twenty five bucks?

Yeah, I mean that was I mean the pack maywhere

Like, so you you're also getting those events, right, the
wrestling events are through what ESPN has going now through
their deal with the ww But the point is it's
all getting bundled up and repackaged, and eventually you just
have to decide is this value proposition worth it? And
if it's not, guess what you'll have the highlights on

your social media, including full video clips. Momentarily the only
thing you want is Olympics hockey and some of the
World Cup stuff will get struck down very fast. I mean, look,
it's it's I get the the how nervous some people
are about, okay, the future of broadcast, tell of the

future of cable all this.

I mean, in the end, it's really moving money around
and what you're paying for. It's not yes it is
it gonna be a little bit more money. Is it
gonna be different? And no, nobody likes any change than
why I'm be able to turn on and watch they
want to watch. But hey, the door was opened fifteen
twenty years ago when we talked, we were able to bundle.
I don't want these channels. I want these channels. I
want this, I want this. This is just the natural
evolution of programming. And again, it's not gonna be because

it's not like suddenly, oh guess what, BritBox has the
NFL package.

on DirecTV, whether it's on YouTube. So you can't say, oh,
but now you're making pay for YouTube. Well, you'd have
to pay some wherever else it is, you have to
pay for it, right, you got to pay for someplace
else you would have to pay for it. So that
that's kind of an outlier for me. But just get

that most of the things are gonna go. It's not
like some Johnny come lately, streaming service is something gonna
get all the NBA rights.

So it's it's it's it's something that is just going
to happen, and it's it's not gonna be as bad
as you think. And already, by seeing something like this,
I feel like, Okay, people get what they want to get,

and the streaming is much is much more of a
popular choice now than than than you thought it was
even going into this week.

And I always just try to remind folks that once
upon a time, and this is you and Grandpa, when

Thursday night. No, you didn't have a Sunday night game.

That might have been the funniest golf thing I've seen

It's a take on it, and after today it's time
to double down on it. Why would Kathy Engelbert not
want to go on the Dan Patrick Show and talk
about the WNBA? Why would you not want to take
a big stage to go and talk maybe talk through
some of the issues they're having, The optics that everybody
hates Caitlin Clark. The officiating is not done, you know,

in her favor, it's done with an animus against her.
Why would you not want to do that?

Dan is the is one of the fairer interviews, what
maybe the fairest interview that that you're gonna get right.
You sound like you're going on you're gonna get ambushed

It's not a matter of if, but when Kathy Engelbert
is replaced as WNBA commissioner. Today Adam Silver, NBA Commissioner

wiged in on Caitlin Clark and said that you know,
she's become a political football and that the debates around
her are not really about official He made this when
he was on stage at a at a at a
Game Plan summit presented by CNBC. He said, how much
he you know, has come to know Caitlin pretty well,
and and and a lot of things that go on
is unfair to her and again being used as a
(35:14):
political football. This is more than we have gotten from
the bleep in w NBA commissioner in a year, right,
like and and what makes sense? Like she could be
out here and she's the one that can control the narrative,
that can talk about Hey, this is what I think
we should be doing with the officiatd. This is where
Katelyn Clark needs to just shut up and play. This
(35:36):
is where Caitlyn Clark needs to be heard where her
coaches need to be heard because she's not being officiated.

Whatever it is.

She's invisible. She's absolutely invisible. When have you ever seen
a commissioner when there's big controversies going on about the
sport be absolute no show anywhere, right And no, he
just likes to say, yeah, let's kick that can down
the road. But like for Kathy Engelbert, like she should
be in front doing this And the only thing that

makes sense is that there's machinations going on. Again, I
don't know anything. I'm just saying, why would she not
be visible at all for all this when the league
needs her the most? And I'm thinking they're in the
process of replacing her and they're figuring out who it's
going to be, and they don't want her on record
talking about things and weighing in on stuff when she's
not going to be and making judgments and rulings when

she's not going to be there for the long war.

Well, and that's it. You can fix the glitch because
her contract is up at the end of the year.
Something Silver also addressed was that the current state of
the WNBA the quote tremendous product progress that it's made
under Kathy Engelbert, but he was noncommittal when asked about
her future with the league. So it's the old fix,

the glitch. Well, let it run its course. She's out golfing.
She doesn't need to do any of the press because
we saw earlier in the week, right there was the
report and the WNBA pushed back to a point that
Adam Silva had actually been the guy to put his
hand on the scale to push for Alyssa Thomas getting suspended.

the lottery picks.

And you know what's funny is in looking at the
top day four picks, certainly, which which was the first
tier of talent. Right, We're talking to Aj Debotsa, We're
talking Darren Peterson, Cam Boozer, and Caleb Wilson, and that
was the top tier. And the feeling was like, you
can't go wrong. And as I'm watching them play and

I'm thinking about the teams that they're with.

It could go it could.

Go wrong for every single one of them.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
Wow, well who impressed you?

Not for them necessarily, but the teams they played for?

Right, who impressed you the most of you saw? Though?

Look aj Debouca, legitimately what had was should have been
number one, the number one pick. He showed an array
of skills. He outplayed Darren Peterson by a long stretch.
I'm just thinking that the Banca would be He's a
great culture setter, he plays hard, he's spirited. Uh, they

had him playing point guard bringing it up and I thought, man,
they really got it right. And then I thought, he's
going to be playing with Trey Young and Anthony Davis.
Speaker 5 (04:18):
How is that gonna work?
Speaker 6 (04:20):
Because the Jazz made a run and the Bansa was
like on his teammates, Hey, we got to play we
got to play harder. He clearly wants everybody to meet
his energy and he is a feisty, spirited, competitive guy.
The Washington Wizards will love love having him, the Washington
Wizards fans. But like Trey Young and Anthony Davis, are
(04:44):
they going to be okay with the Bansa like getting
on them because they don't always play with that that
sort of intensity. I just I don't know how that
chemistry is going to work. And then Darren Peterson, the
whole idea was that they where he was going to
play point guard. He could not handle the physicality. He
struggled mightily, and this is Summer League where he couldn't
(05:06):
handle the physicality. He's a great shot maker. I think
he can be a quality two, but he's not a one.
And now that you're if he's not a one, well
you already have Cante George there, you got Ace Bailey,
you got you got to feed Laurie Markinen, you got
Jaron Jackson like they need, they need him to be
a point guard, and I don't know that he is.
(05:27):
Cam booz was a lot better than I thought. I
think he was the most intelligent of the of the
four and the way he played, But how's he going
to play next to Zachie Edie, those guys I could
see getting torched on the pick and roll. And then
finally Caleb Wilson was my was my guy who I thought.
You know what, I'm a little worried about Daron.
Speaker 7 (05:46):
Peterson because of the Kansas issues.
Speaker 6 (05:49):
Cam Boozer is a safe pick, but I don't know
what his upside is. Caleb Wilson is the guy after
a Javan said that I would take and then I
saw him play and I was like, oh, wildly talented,
but place hard, place fast does not play smart, and
that will undercut everything else that he does. So I
(06:12):
had to back off, and I'm thinking Keaton Wagler or
Darius Acuff. There was four Kingston Flemings, there were four
of Michel Brown Junior. There were like four guards taken
after that, all of whom played a very composed game.
I went from thinking I would take Caleb Wilson number
two to thinking I might have taken one of those
(06:33):
guards number four if it was my choice. That's how
much my opinion of Caleb Wilson's flip. Again, wildly talented,
but man, his decision making incredibly suspect. And so I'm
looking at all four picks and I'm like, talent wise,
I'm not going to question what they have.

It's just the fit with who took them.
Speaker 6 (06:56):
It'll be very interesting to see how that plays out well.

As I'm sitting here at Bull's shirt, that doesn't make
me feel so great. A bit you know did Jim,

Like I've looked at the moves that the Bulls have made,
like Norman Powell.

I liked that pick.

They've done it getting Claxton. I thought that was that

more where I had him versus what I saw. I

can finish the schedule on Lebron James decision?

Uh No, well no I'm not.

you know, we had this Steve Kerr episode that's classic

I don't see Lebron's too smart to be in the
Western Conference. He wants, he wants to at least think
that he has a shot at getting to the conference finals,
maybe the finals. The only way he does that if
he stays in the East and and.

And here we talked.

I think we talked about it last time. And it
only as this drags out, it only deepens the wound
if he doesn't go back to Cleveland.
Speaker 5 (08:33):
Like I just if he goes back to Miami. He
picked Miami twice over Cleveland.

Come on, Philadelphia, And the biggest problem here is everybody
has spent their money and so we're looking at Lebron
signing a minimum deal. I think most of the teams
have two roster spots left so they could fit bronni
(09:00):
and Lebron in. But this is like nobody has saved
any money to make an offer that is better than
anybody else's. Golden State and Cleveland, because Harden and Draymond
Green opted out, have some wigle room. But those guys
(09:20):
did that under the assumption that they were going to
be signed back on longer term deals. And they're not
going to take some massive steep discount. Draymond Green opted
out of twenty almost twenty eight million. I'm sure he's
expecting that his next deal is going to be twenty plus,
which leads very little room to make a notable off
(09:44):
to Lebron. And then you're going to be paying heavy
tax and some of your you know, you're moving into
the second apron. And same thing with James Harden Harbin
opted out of forty two million. I can't see him
taking anything less than thirty five on a new deal.
So it's there aren't a whole lot of you know,
(10:04):
for for as many teams that are saying like, yeah,
we we take we can fit Lebron in, we we
take Lebron, and guys coming out and saying it, they're
saying it, but they didn't, you know, financially, what they're
doing is we'll take him, and we'll take.
Speaker 7 (10:20):
Him on our terms, which is a which is.
Speaker 5 (10:22):
A minimum deal.
Speaker 6 (10:23):
And uh, you know how how Lebron handles that what
he decides is most worth to him. I just I
don't see as far as a finish like how anything
beats going back to Cleveland.

You know, Rick, to look at this from a little
bit different side because we've had time now because you
know Lebron likes all this attention that he's going to have.
Speaker 6 (10:43):
Is that no, no he doesn't good, no he doesn't.
Speaker 1 (10:48):
He just retire that reas in I mean going through
free agency. I kind of I kind of get the
sense overall a lot of contending teams are teams that
think they're contend have a little bit of a cat
that ate the Canary smile going on, like, hey, there's
still some big things that are gonna happen. And maybe
(11:08):
it's a Lebron James when he decides to sign, But
I get I get the sense that we're not done
with the big names moving and big and big deals
happening over the course of the rest of the summer,
just because I can't believe that some of these teams
that think, hey, we're this close to a championship are
done and they say, yes, we're done going in. This
what we're gonna This is what the Pistons are gonna
look like. This is what the Cavs are gonna look like.
(11:29):
This is what the Heat's gonna look like. This is
what the Nuggets are gonna look like. All this stuff,
I just get a sense that there's gonna be some
big movement, and I can throw in something like maybe
the Spurs decide, hey, we can't bring the Aaron Fox back.
We have to you know, hartburn Castle augh to get
all the minutes, and after the NBA Finals, we got
to move on. But I just get the sense that
maybe Lebron is the kickstart of this. But I think
there's gonna be a second phase of some big moves
(11:52):
over the course of the rest of the summer.
Speaker 6 (11:53):
Well, it's a fair point, and I'm not gonna say
that there are teams. I mean, Detroit has Jalen Are
a restricted free agent out there, and you know how
that plays out. And I do think that they need
they need something. Benedict Mathern is out there restricted free agent.

But the but the.
Speaker 6 (12:17):
Great difficulty is that the combination of the last two
collective bargaining agreements have essentially created.
Speaker 5 (12:26):
A hard tap.

And so while I think there, I think you're right
and that there are teams out there that, if they
really want to put themselves firmly in the title contender category,
need to make another move. Making a big move is
going to be so challenging because you have to have

the contracts match up perfectly. And so that's where that's
where it's going to be difficult, in in in those
teams getting that done. And so I don't know if
I could see most still being made.

empowerment when they were dancing to the tune of all

numbers are in for the MLB Home Run Derby and
it was just over five million people watching the home
run Derby. It was the lowest home run Derby rated
since two thousand and three, and not far off of

the home Run Derby from two years ago. Now this
was on Netflix compared to ESPNS. There's a change here
and everything else, but the lowest rated home run Derby
since two thousand and three. Now, as we've said, because
there's a different take here other than what do you do? Yes,
we know it's done. Casting for the home run Derby's
don't cast for the alsto games. All the stuff you've
heard a thousand times. The home run Derby is what

it is. They'll continue to try to do tweaks to
it to try to get more people to watch. Obviously,
if there's players that people have heard of once in
a while, you'll get a big You'll get a big
player to come in and be in the derby and hit.

Yeah, it happens.

But the big takeaway for me, quite honestly, is that, Okay,
so two years ago you add just over five million
people watching, right, better last year when Calroly won. But
this is the lowest since two thousand and three, five thousand.
That's back where was five thousand. But for me, the
number is more okay, it's just about what it was

two years ago when this thing was on NETFLI, when
this thing was on Netflix this year compared to ESPN
two years ago, this tells me what I have always
said about events on television, streaming shows, sporting events that
change location, change networks, change everything. You hear from different

networks when they talk about ratings for something, they always
get well, people had a tough time finding this.
Speaker 3 (22:10):
People have a tough time finding they didn't know where
it was. They didn't know where it was.
Speaker 1 (22:13):
Maybe people didn't know where it was on net Now,
the fact that we had five million people a couple
of years ago watch it on ESPN and you had
five billion people watch it on Netflix tells me people
knew where to find it.
Speaker 8 (22:24):
Now they found it.
Speaker 1 (22:25):
People knew where to find it. Right, if people want
something bad enough, they will find it now. The beginning
of the Home Run Derby. I completely get if the
audience is not what it is after like a half hour,
because it's like my dad who called me saying, hey,
where's a Home Run Derby?
Speaker 5 (22:40):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (22:40):
Dad, it's on Netflix. Oh okay, So my dad has
to go to Netflix and you boot up Netflix. It
takes probably ninety seconds to turn it on. So I
completely get where, Oh maybe I don't get it right away.
I have to get out what I'm doing. I have
to go find it.
Speaker 3 (22:51):
So the very beginning of an.
Speaker 1 (22:52):
Event, I get where maybe people aren't watching, but people
want to watch it. They're tuning in ten minutes late,
fifteen minutes late. You see the overall ratings. I never
thought it was a big deal where people said, oh
I can't find this that that's like, that's an argument
that I think worked like twenty five years ago. And
I don't think that even with all the streaming services
that are out there now and people know where to
(23:15):
find and I think most people have the majority of
streaming services right Most people that want to that that
are watched televin that are interested at least have Netflix
and Amazon Prime. I mean I have all of them, honestly,
except for except for Disney, which is weird. We used
to watch Disney all the time. Inter the kids get
older and looking for the better, the programming just hasn't
(23:36):
been there. But like all the other ones, yea, the
Paramount Plus and MGM plus full on, Like I have
all of them because they all have programs I want
to see or hey, you know, this is what we do.
We stay home much more. They're much more choices for
us now than they're ever worse, so staying home is
a lot easier. And yeah, there's the there's the bit
(23:58):
of a reorganization of the streaming services. Not everyone is
gonna make it all the way through because they're they're
kind of cutting into each other.
Speaker 8 (24:06):
You see some of the bundling that's going on. Hey,
pair up with this with this HBO.
Speaker 3 (24:11):
Max, what if I've already got them off?
Speaker 1 (24:13):
HBO Max will team up with Amazon, and Netflix will
team up with Apple, whatever it's gonna be. So there
is gonna be some reor going on over the next
few years because look, not of them, not a lot
of them are making as much as they could be making.
But the streaming giants are still doing really really well.
So so for sports wise, they're still going to spend
this money because they're making the money that they are
(24:34):
and we can afford to have this right. We can
spend one hundred million dollars in this football game. Why
because we made a hundred million dollars last week on
this new movie that came out. Oh okay, yeah, so
we're all good. But I never thought it was it
was a thing where people couldn't find it. If people
want to find something, they will find it easy enough.
And streaming is there for all of us now, and
(24:54):
it's it's very easy to have a streaming service and
then to get rid of it. It's not like it
was when you and I were in our twenties in
early thirties, where they said, I like to cancel HBO. Okay,
well that's gonna go into effect at the end of
this month, and then if you want it back, well
it's it's gonna go the end of this month, another
two weeks. As my dad would always call and say, Oh,
you gotta do is flip a button. Why can't you
flip that button right now on HBO right now? So
(25:15):
it's much easier to cancel, come back, cancel, come back
that the streaming services make it easy. So sometimes the
whole evil of stuff going to streaming services is a
little overrated and you don't need any more instance other
than hey, here's five million people watched on Netflix this year,
when five million people watch on ESPN a couple of years.
Speaker 8 (25:33):
Yeah, I mean look to your point. If you really
want something, and that's in anything you're doing, I really
want it, you're gonna go find it. And for a
home run Derby very specific. This is you know what
you're getting, right, So it's not like you're suddenly gonna
get an onslaught of new viewers to it. So you're
(25:54):
not expecting the numbers to jump. Nothing crazy happen. You
change some of the rules, fine, and you got more
stars involve, which was great, right, and Schwarber in Philly
or a Commie was back. He had a bunch of
the young stars whatever else. But when it's all said
and done, all of these streaming services, I don't know
what the the average number that people subscribe to. I'm
(26:17):
a britt Box, you're an MGM plus. But we we
get to that that same end game with the number
like if you have.

If you don't have britt Box, something on BritBox eventually
will get picked up by Amazon.
Speaker 8 (26:28):
That's something, right, Or one show you like is going
to it leaves this day, like guess what, twenty four
hours later it's the featured program on another Yeah, Gilbour
Girls just left Netflix and now it's hey, here we
are on Pride.
Speaker 1 (26:43):
How I watched from Right Right and from is a
great show. It's it's my god, it's so much fun
and it was an MGM plus show for a while.
We're watching on there, watching it, and then all of
a sudden, you can watch it here. Amazon's got it
and like, oh so now three.
Speaker 8 (26:59):
Service that's subcontract it out. You can get it in
and whatever. For sports, the part that's still enticing is
the live because you can get the lower third and
whatever ads that you eventually will see on all these
programming choices. But you've got to have proof of concept
of what audience is showing up, and then you start
(27:21):
going into the secondary parts of it with your title
sponsors and everything else.
Speaker 1 (27:26):
I would say if I had to say this, because
I think way more people have streaming than you think
do right, Like, overall you the oh now it's going
to streaming, and suddenly we're hiding it behind all these walls.
I would think the average television consumer right, because you're
not watching TV unless you don't love it. I think
everybody has Netflix, Amazon, Apple, and HBO Max. I think
(27:50):
everybody has those four. Those are the ones have all
the big programs on it. They have all the Emmy shows,
they have all the comedies, they have all the big dramas. Look,
Netflix and Amazon they're the two top dogs. Then right
under it, then then would probably come Apple. Then you
would have HBO Max. As far as when you talk
about relevance and what shows they have, and then after that,
I could see where people are picking and choosing. Maybe
(28:11):
it's MGM Plus, maybe it's brit Box, maybe it's something else,
maybe it's AMC. Then you can say, okay, then you
get a little bit of more personal preference. But I
think everybody has those four And guess what these are?
All the games are, this, where all the sporting events are,
this where they go. People are finding this, people have them.
There's nothing to be afraid of if you're if the
sports are going to streaming, because it's an inevitability that
(28:32):
it's going to happen. And yet you're gonna say, oh,
I'm paying so I got to pay to watch the
NFL because let's say Netflix gets it, right, Oh, I
gotta pay to watch NFLF. Well, you probably have to
pay a little bit more, but you're paying for Netflix anyway.
Most likely you're paying for Netflix anyway, or you were.
Speaker 8 (28:46):
Playing paying for cable at one point and you were
paying for all of this.
Speaker 3 (28:50):
Yeah, the other is paying eighty nine dollars.
Speaker 8 (28:53):
If I told you I found a hack that someone
put up the other day during the Homer journey, I'm like,
I'm gonna save some money.

Yeah, but it's it's just that we were still saying money.

of wow, that was awful. Yeah, but you didn't pay
seventy bucks for it.

If you subscribe to Paramount Plus, what is it ten
bucks a month? Yeah, you get so you get that,
you get your Criminal Minds or whatever other shows you're.

Or a Holyfield forty nine ninety five or seventy nine
ninety How much was PAKIAW But it was like a
hundred and twenty five bucks?
Speaker 3 (29:41):
Yeah, I mean that was I mean the pack maywhere
the pack yall was like one hundred dollars. Yeah, I mean,
but that's what I mean.

Like, so you you're also getting those events, right, the
wrestling events are through what ESPN has going now through
their deal with the ww But the point is it's
all getting bundled up and repackaged, and eventually you just
have to decide is this value proposition worth it? And
if it's not, guess what you'll have the highlights on

your social media, including full video clips. Momentarily the only
thing you want is Olympics hockey and some of the
World Cup stuff will get struck down very fast. I mean, look,
it's it's I get the the how nervous some people
are about, okay, the future of broadcast, tell of the

future of cable all this.

I mean, in the end, it's really moving money around
and what you're paying for. It's not yes it is
it gonna be a little bit more money. Is it
gonna be different? And no, nobody likes any change than
why I'm be able to turn on and watch they
want to watch. But hey, the door was opened fifteen
twenty years ago when we talked, we were able to bundle.
I don't want these channels. I want these channels. I
want this, I want this. This is just the natural
evolution of programming. And again, it's not gonna be because

it's not like suddenly, oh guess what, BritBox has the
NFL package.

Like, okay, I mean they're still gonna have the Big Three,
the Big four are gonna have the games. You want
to buy the NFL, you would have to pay for
the NFL package no matter where it was, whether it's
on DirecTV, whether it's on YouTube. So you can't say, oh,
but now you're making pay for YouTube. Well, you'd have
to pay some wherever else it is, you have to
pay for it, right, you got to pay for someplace
else you would have to pay for it. So that
that's kind of an outlier for me. But just get

that most of the things are gonna go. It's not
like some Johnny come lately, streaming service is something gonna
get all the NBA rights.

Oh wow, look at this, you know what I mean.

So it's it's it's it's something that is just going
to happen, and it's it's not gonna be as bad
as you think. And already, by seeing something like this,
I feel like, Okay, people get what they want to get,
They know what they want to do, and and and
and the streaming is much is much more of a
popular choice now than than than you thought it was
even going into this week.

According to Adwave, four to six paid subscriptions per household.

Uh in that regard.

And I always just try to remind folks that once
upon a time, and this is you and Grandpa, when
we had whatever your local football team was one more
game and then Monday night football show that was a
Thursday night. No, you didn't have a Sunday night game.
You didn't have all these other things.

You had to wait till the Saturday games in December
to get another. Oh, I had a saturdayseball, you had
a game of the week and your local baseball money,
and then you had WGN and TBS.

But otherwise he didn't see anybody, which is why the
All Star Game had so much juice and why the
World Series was that because we didn't get to see
those teams. But you know, since we're so used to
I get everything because we're spoiled little brats. Someone charging

to double down on it. Why would Kathy Engelbert not
want to go on the Dan Patrick Show and talk
about the WNBA? Why would you not want to take
a big stage to go and talk maybe talk through
some of the issues they're having, The optics that everybody
hates Caitlin Clark. The officiating is not done, you know,

in her favor, it's done with an animus against her.
Why would you not want to do that?

Dan is the is one of the fairer interviews, what
maybe the fairest interview that that you're gonna get right.

It's not a matter of if, but when Kathy Engelbert
is replaced as WNBA commissioner. Today Adam Silver, NBA Commissioner

wiged in on Caitlin Clark and said that you know,
she's become a political football and that the debates around
her are not really about official He made this when
he was on stage at a at a at a
Game Plan summit presented by CNBC. He said, how much
he you know, has come to know Caitlin pretty well,
and and and a lot of things that go on
is unfair to her and again being used as a

political football. This is more than we have gotten from
the bleep in w NBA commissioner in a year, right,
like and and what makes sense? Like she could be
out here and she's the one that can control the narrative,
that can talk about Hey, this is what I think
we should be doing with the officiatd. This is where
Katelyn Clark needs to just shut up and play. This

is where Caitlyn Clark needs to be heard where her
coaches need to be heard because she's not being officiated.

She's invisible. She's absolutely invisible. When have you ever seen
a commissioner when there's big controversies going on about the
sport be absolute no show anywhere, right And no, he
just likes to say, yeah, let's kick that can down

be in front doing this And the only thing that

makes sense is that there's machinations going on. Again, I
don't know anything. I'm just saying, why would she not
be visible at all for all this when the league
needs her the most? And I'm thinking they're in the
process of replacing her and they're figuring out who it's
going to be, and they don't want her on record
talking about things and weighing in on stuff when she's
not going to be and making judgments and rulings when

she's not going to be there for the long war.

Well, and that's it. You can fix the glitch because
her contract is up at the end of the year.
Something Silver also addressed was that the current state of
the WNBA the quote tremendous product progress that it's made
under Kathy Engelbert, but he was noncommittal when asked about
her future with the league. So it's the old fix,

the glitch. Well, let it run its course. She's out golfing.
She doesn't need to do any of the press because
we saw earlier in the week, right there was the
report and the WNBA pushed back to a point that
Adam Silva had actually been the guy to put his
hand on the scale to push for Alyssa Thomas getting suspended.
