You know, a minute like we've done here on the
show me and Mike uh Is to go certain things
at a time, is to go, hey, let's talk about
this here, because then you wind up doing a stream
of consciouness radio in which would be easy to do
with this game and play this, play this play. But
a couple of things to focus on here. We got
Rick Buker coming up in twenty minutes and I'll tell
you what he said something the other night on the
(00:50):
show that comes back and comes home to Rust, which
we'll get to. But two of the biggest things from
this game, right the Spurs have a huge lead car
Anthony Towns and foul trouble beginning of the game. The
Knicks don't recover from it. The Spurs get out to
a huge lead at Halftimes twenty nine point lead in
the middle of the third quarter, you're looking for an
inflection point for the comeback for the Knicks. Victor wembin
(01:13):
Yama gets called for a flagrant foul on Karl Anthony
Towns and at the time, it looked like it was
just to throw away moment, right, It didn't look like
it didn't look like it rose to the level of
a flagrant foul. However, they had just called one on
Mitchell Robinson earlier in the game for an elbow that
caught Wemby up in the neck. So this was an
elbow by Wemby. It wasn't. I can't say it wasn't
(01:34):
a foul, but it was. It was. It was an
elbow that caught Karl Anthony Towns under the chin. And
I am sure because I know psychology, I know people,
I'm sure. At that point the NBA said, yeah, okay,
we can give Wemby a flagrant on this. We kind
of biffed it not giving him the flagrant on the
Jalen Brunson play from two nights ago. Yeah, but so
we kind of owe them one, so we can give
them the flagrant here right, what's the damage. The Spurs
(01:56):
are up twenty nine flagrant fowl? What does it matter?
The Knicks outscored the Spurs from that moment fifty five
to twenty five. You're looking for the inflection point of
where things started. It was right there, that moment right there.
I don't know if that's where the Knicks decided we're
gonna keep playing where the Knicks said, now we're pissed.
But to see even at that point, Mike, to see
(02:17):
a twenty nine point deficit that even hey, all right,
find that we get the foul. Hey, okay, we're looking
for positivity. I can't believe that the Knicks said, yeah,
let's go expend all this energy in a comeback, because
this is just not our night. Whatever it is, this
is just not our night. And not only do they
come back and make it worthwhile they win the bleeping game,
(02:39):
but you want to go back and find the inflection
point for the beginning of this comeback, the beginning of
this story. That's where it starts right now. That wemby
flagrant in the third QAR.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
Yeah, I mean we talked about it as it developed,
and it didn't really look egregious on the grand scheme,
the Mitchell Robinson more a forearms shivered to the next
So you know the physicality that we thought would come
against Wembin Yama.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
There it was in that moment.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
We saw a lot of little micro pieces and stuff.
And certainly after the Robinson you had Wembin Yama sitting
on the ground laughing at him, saying, I'm in your head.
Well cut to the chase that for the Knicks, I
think what they heard the first two games, everybody said, hey,
everybody heard, you're the champions, and patting everybody on the back. Right,

Karl Anthony Towns getting the great hug that's been awaiting
him and recognizing his ten years in the year in
the league. Jalen Bronson hadn't played well, but came up
big in Game one and Game two and big moments. Right,
So all of that, you read your press clipping, So
all of a sudden, everybody swung the other way. We
had a kind of a listless effort for a good

chunk of the early part of Game three. A lot
of excuse making, right. Ah, there's you know political folks
in ah. It was tough to get in all of
this as opposed to just say, you know, we played badly,
we lost, and for this it was a no show
effort in the first half. I think someone at least
in the locker room, and I'd like to and I
(04:07):
can't wait to hear it in the post. I gotta
think someone at least did a Will Ferrell slammed a
locker and said, we gotta keep our composure and actually
play the basketball, because otherwise, what's the fish rap gonna
look like tomorrow? They'd lost this game, even if they'd
lost by one, right, they were gonna wear it. And
for all of these guys, that's all they've done as
members of the New York Knicks is they've had to
(04:29):
wear it time and time again. I mean, it's fifty
three years of it, it's twenty seven years of it.
Pick your timeline of all of this. It was gonna
be same old Knicks if they lost this game. And
I gotta think at least on some level they said,
all right, we're at least not gonna go down literally
without a fight. And then I can go into the
cacophony of voices now raising up against the Spurs because
(04:53):
there's a million things they did wrong to leave that
door a cracked to allow the Knicks to come and
just storm the cast.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
Now you mentioned that, and that's where we have to
get to this play right here. This is where. Look,
we talk to guys on the show all the time
when I say Rick Buker, and you talk about when
I say there's no one better to talk basketball with
than Rick Buker. I mean, look, we have guys him
and Mark Stein on the show. Rick Buker said this
to us now the last couple of times we've had
him on, and he had said watching watching the NBA Finals.
(05:23):
Still there's times to him where the Spurs play too fast,
where they're too fast, where he says, I'm standing up
and I'm just saying, guys, slow it down, slow it down.
I don't like that he's coaching against the Knicks, but
I get what he's doing. Well, it's like me.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
Again, I'm not cheering against your Knicks. I hate watching
bad sports, bad basketball. And as soon as you're dumb
on either side, we're gonna call it out here on
the radio.
Speaker 1 (05:46):
So you say, guys, slow it down, slow it down,
slow it down. Right, I've see, you know, slow it down.
They go too fast, they play too fast. A lot
and go back to the next to last sequence in
this game, right, the next to last sequence where the
Knicks worked down by one and they had the ball
(06:07):
and they don't get a great shot off and the
ball gets tipped out deep into the Knicks backcourt. D
Aaron Fox, who has alternately killed the Spurs in this series. Right.
To be fair, like Daron Fox a terrific player, but wow,
there's been times where his decision making he has absolutely
killed the Spurs. Right, the ball is loose, and as
(06:28):
an NBA player, you have to know this. He's been
the league right long enough now to know the situation.
In theory, you can say when you're racing to you know,
backcourt to get the ball, this could be a breakaway
layup for me in a three point lead. But he's
got to know when I'm getting the ball and who
knowb is back? Right, because you want to talk about
I don't nobe making a play before the play, yeah, right?
(06:50):
And who nob is back? When d Aaron Fox gets
that ball and he tries to just take a step
and rush for a layup, this is where as an
NBA and look, I said, the guy he's been in
the league for a long time. You gotta know, Okay,
the defender is there, I'm out of control. I need
to dribble this back out, take time off the clock,
make the Knicks foul, and I'm going to the free
(07:12):
throw line. I'm an eighty percent shooter from the free
throw line, and I'm getting to the free throw line
to try to win this game. There's a lot of
chaos happening right now, and the defender is here, and oh,
by the way, it's one of the top defenders in
the NBA and og Anunoby right, you gotta make a
better decision. But he plays too fast and he decides
to go in for the layup. I can make this
game winning play. And what happens. Anonobe rejects it. The
(07:34):
Knicks get the ball, they get the ball cross half court,
they call time out. Brunson shot Anunobi on there. From there,
But you want to go back and talk about what
a horrible decision that was for de Aaron Fox, You're
gonna hear the play and this is where the If
you are the Spurs, the one play in this game
that you want back is this one. It's a back
runs a e the drive, the pillers up Chuck on

go rebound, deplective in the back court, Fox tuns a
chance to get out, Fox, hasn't it? Sun my second
tomading Nick radio on the call, and as we know
from there, the big shot the play by Anonobe the
Spurs can't get a hoop at the other end with
one second left. But that watching that play, I guarantee
you we'll talk to Rick Buker in five minutes more

or ten minutes Mike, and he's gonna say I told
them they play too fast. I keep telling them they
played too fast. They won't listen to me.

It's funny, I tweeted out just the first of what
will be a nine part missive of the mistakes of
the Spurs, and that that led it so the fact
that we're talking about it right now, leading into our
conversation with Rick.

O Gianoba a fantastic play right as he closes out
and he's back And how many times do we see
the Knicks that when it wasn't Bronson? Think about Josh Hart,
think about Alvarado, Think about all the Nick players going
down into the low post. How many times did they
cut and turned back out if they knew that the
shot was gonna get challenged, whether Wenby was already back
(08:58):
or whatever. Live to find a better shot, a better sequence,
and a better opportunity to finish. Daron Fox, who we've
called into into question a number of times over these
four games, Jason, another one of those you know what,
let ananobe fly by ball, fake, let him fall into you,
get to the file line, or just cut back and
(09:20):
extend it, make them chase you down instead. The ball
ends in Alvarado's hands. Eventually, Fox commits the file at
five point four seconds as we set up in the
front court, and away we go. But yeah, it's another
decision of along with all of the quick three point shots,
which is a whole other, uh you know, level of chaos,
(09:41):
But in that particular moment, Yeah, slow down, stop for you.
It's like, that's great because that's who they are. I mean,
they actually because Jason, they average twenty five years of age.
I mean, they just don't know. And Daron Fox played
a lot with the Kings. He's not been in these situations. No,
it does a new thing to him. It is a
new thing to him. It isn't but I mean that's

where But but you've played a long time. You have to
know that the end of games like that's what you did.

You have to do right. You can't just you can't.
I mean, I'm gonna try to make this heroic play.
If it was a tie game or you were down one,
I get it, But you have the lead, right j R. Smith.
You gotta know the situation of the game. Is that
not right for j R? Smith? J R. Smith Smith's
huge boner. I mean that. I think everybody who has

ever played for the Knicks was at the game tonight,
except I don't know there's anybody guy guys that were.
I think Steve Novak was at the game.

Did anybody walk in with an Oakley one of those
coolly fabricated masks like Cranston had at that comic con
that timesberg as anybody could try to come as Oakley.

Yet I think if you try to come in even
wearing Charles Oakley gear, you're not allowed it. Okay, I
don't even care you. Sorry Nora for a new one.
No no, no, no, here, you can't wear this one.

But I mean, we see a lot of insane old
Knicks jersey. That's one of my favorite things on Football
Sundays or if you go to your favorite ballyard. I
remember we went to a bar here in the Los Angeles.
It was a Bears bar, and just seeing the fifty
years of jerseys on display, it's like, Wow, they got
you for that guy. He played two games man, But yeah,

j R. Smith is invoked here and the memory there.
Speaker 1 (11:28):
I mean, like, that's a play where if you talk
about all the things the Spurs want back, Yeah, like
the because it's a decision. It's not a play, it's
a decison. That's why what would you would want Wemby's
missed free throws back right? Like, I mean the guy
after Josh Hart misses a layup that was gonna give
the Nicks the lead, Wendy, I know, right he got
that's a bad decision. That's a decision. That's what they
would have looked back at had the Knicks loss this game, Like, dude,
(11:50):
you're going into dunket. I know that he felt that
Steph Castle was behind him, but just duck it. That
would have been the play the Knicks fans going, that
would have been it, right, But Wemby like, Okay, he
missed two free It's not like anything. It was a
bad decision he missed two free throws. This was a
decision that the Aaron Fox has to make and know
the situation, man, like you gotta know. This is where
when the Knicks took a two games to none lead,
(12:12):
we said, this is why I said, I want the
Knicks playing the Spurs instead of the Knicks playing the
Thunder because the Spurs haven't been here, not like the
Knicks have been there, but the Knicks have been through
the wars of Eastern Conference second round and Eastern Conference
Finals the last couple of years. At least they've been
through that. This is a huge, you know, new run
for the Spurs to get back saying oh wow, this
is everything is new for them. So I knew at
(12:33):
the end of games that it was going to favor
the Knicks. And this falls into that as well, like
that's a that's a play that you know, a team
has to know. You have to make the right call
there instead of playing too fast, And that's the Spurs did.
And that's why the Spurs sitting back, why they're down.
They're going We've been the better team for the better
part of this entire series, and we're going home down
three to one, Like That's where the Spurs have to

sit there and say, what can we possibly do now?
How can we possibly win this series with what what
we've seen so far?

Aaron Fox? Uh came into the league in twenty seventeen. Uh.
And then we've got to close the circle, right because
we talked about coach col and the happiness and celebratory
moment with Karl Anthony Towns. Does he have to go
to the other locker room and go hug Daron Fox?

twenty nine point lead for the Spurs and the second
half turns on Victor Webbin Yama's flagrant. The Knicks win

og and Unobi at the top of that list for
the Knicks and joining us now I'm the hotline to
break it all down is a guy who potentially foreshadowed
this for the better part of the last week Fox
Sports won NBA Insider Extraordinary, Rick Bucker. When we broke
(16:19):
down the first couple of games of the series, Rick
said one thing. The Spurs play too fast. I'm standing up,
I'm screaming at my television slow down, you're playing too fast,
And we talked about a few minutes ago, what was
the biggest play of the game. The Aaron Fox chasing
down that loose ball instead of dribbling it back out,
tries to go in for a fast layup. He gets
(16:41):
it blocked, Knicks get possession, and Unobi's heroics. The Knicks
are up three to one. Rick. Anything else you want
to let us know about the rest of the series
that goes, just let me know right now ahead of time.
Take some of the tenseness out of it for me.
Speaker 4 (16:53):
Yeah, no, I think we pretty much covered it.
Speaker 1 (16:56):
Never go.
Speaker 4 (17:00):
Yeah no, I'm glad you brought up that. That was
the first thing that I thought was, dearon, what are
you doing like, you don't have to score there? You
need to run the clock out. You ran down the ball,
you had the opportunity, you guys. I mean I actually,
starting in the third quarter, I did not like the
way the San Antonio Spurs were playing. They obviously were
(17:22):
shooting lights out, particularly from three. At the beginning of
the game. My first thought was, you're not going to
continue to shoot seventy five percent from three. That just
does not happen, that's going to balance out. And so
if you think that, and clearly they evidently did in
spite of it starting to balance out, there were three
for seventeen in the second half from long range. They
(17:45):
never adjusted, and when the game got to fifteen going
into the fourth quarter, I said, this is a game.
This is a game, and the Knicks simply walked them down.
And then we saw once again, I just look the
Aaron Fox putting the ball in the Aaron Fox's hands
as many times as they did. I know Dylan Harper
(18:07):
is a rookie. I would not have continued to put
the ball in in the Aaron's hands. And simply it
might be the he might be the veteran, he might
be the veteran guard among what they have, but the
reality is he's only been to the playoffs once before.
Asking him to close out a game in the playoffs
(18:29):
is more than I would do at this at this stage,
especially if he's still hampered by by the ankle. So
a lot of credit to go around for I mean, honestly,
watching the first half, I was like, Man san Antonio
has identified the offensive weak points for the New York Knicks,
(18:50):
and they're exploiting that and that may change this series.
And then we got to the second half and the
youth of the San Antonios perst showed up again and
it was like, oh, this is why they were down
two one in the series to begin with.
Speaker 2 (19:04):
Well, let's go to the brilliant og Annanobi flying in U.
Don't they teach in in basic grade school basketball? Hey,
keep an eye on the inbounder.
Speaker 4 (19:16):
Yeah, well, usually it's for a for a shot. But again,
Aaron Fox was in the in it was his play.
He came over from guarding the inbound and I really
didn't understand why you're gonna double team or try to
double team Jalen Brunson at what twenty seven to twenty
eight feet You're not he had too far to come.
(19:37):
I don't know. If that was I'd find it hard
to believe that Mitch Johnson said we're gonna we're gonna
double team Jalen that far away from the basket. But
it was Daron coming over that gave Jalen a free run.
And then Dylan Harper wasn't wasn't boxing anybody out, and
(19:59):
that's that's what created the opportunity. But again I just
lack of execution, lack of understanding exactly what you have
to do in those situations. The San Antonio spurs, lack
of experience and how to close out playoff games reared
ats ugly ahead once again.
Speaker 2 (20:15):
Is o g Nnobi now the greatest nick of all time?
He is tonight with that second half shooting plus those
two plays at the end of the game, Rick, I mean,
that's the stuff statues are built on.
Speaker 4 (20:29):
It's really it's interesting because we've, like, you know, we've
talked a little bit about this. Can you win a
championship with Jayalen Bunson as your best player? And you
could look at this, You could look at this series
and say, no, you can't. But that doesn't mean that
the Knicks can't win because O Danby is performing like
(20:51):
that best player. Or you get sort of like the
Warriors when they had staff. It's like you get multiple
contributions from guys that, uh, that less than the responsibility
of the sixth the six foot guy who's your your
go to closer.
Speaker 1 (21:08):
Well, well, let let's be fair here. You know, I
told you Jalen Brunson was terrible the first three games
of this series. He was fantastic tonight, he just he
missed that shot at the end, but Anonoby with a
tipping but outside he shot while he didn't turn the
ball over. This was This was his best game. And
twenty nine point comebacks don't don't come unless your best
players is starting to get shots like he did.
Speaker 4 (21:29):
Present. No, he had, he had a very good game.
I still don't know if I would say that he
like you know, and this gets into sort of the
definition of when we say that this guy was the
best player and and won the series like he did
his part without question.
Speaker 6 (21:46):
But.
Speaker 4 (21:48):
The contribution of anenobe and what they're getting from from
other places, it's it's it's not a domin it was
I would say this, it was a really good performance.
I don't know that Jalen brunts and even tonight will
this being his best performance, dominated the game. He did
what he had to do to help the Nicks win.
Speaker 1 (22:08):

Speaker 6 (22:08):
Can we leave it at that?
Speaker 2 (22:09):
Sure, ten to fifteen second half of Brunson, Let's just
go to the structure that is Madison Square Garden. What
was wrong with the shooting angles and vision on that
end of the court because both teams were terrible.
Speaker 4 (22:23):
Yeah, I don't know. I'd have to look at the
seating chart and see exactly which which Hollywood stars were
down there that were potentially distracting the players. I don't know,
it's good to it. I don't have any not being
in the building. I got nothing for you.
Speaker 1 (22:43):
What gremlins were on that end? Yeah? No, So let's
go back to another moment. Rick. You know, we talked
about the d Aaron Fox play. No matter what, no
matter how bad things were going for the Spurs offensively
in the third quarter, it's a twenty nine point lead,
and when he gets called for the flagrant foul, and
if you want to look for an inflection point, the
(23:04):
Knicks outscored the Spurs from that point on fifty five
twenty five. Now, I don't know if it was where
it pissed the Knicks off. I don't know if this
was where they sensed a little bit or they sensed
up a little bit of screw it. We finally got
this call on Wemby. The garden comes alive. But it
was just different from that moment on and it shouldn't
have been. It should be Okay, Yeah, Wenby gets a flagrant,
(23:24):
that's great, it's a twenty nine point devisit, but things
were different from that point on.
Speaker 4 (23:29):
Yeah, you know what what I felt early on was
that they they were looking to the rest to make
a call. They got two wound up either begging for
calls or looking at the rest. I just thought that
they were they were distracted looking for calls rather than
just playing the game. And to your point, I don't
know whether that changed their mindset or their temperament or
(23:52):
is like, Okay, we got one, you know what, let's
let's just play now. But but yeah, that was it was.
It's into and it's especially interesting because of all the
kind of the back and forth and some of the
stuff that Wemby has done. And he's one he's one
more flagrant foul away from missing a game, if I'm
(24:12):
not mistaken. Yeah, So that that was I thought that
was interesting getting that even prior to the Knicks winning
this game. I was thinking even at too too, if
Wemby's on the on the verge of missing a game,
that could that could ultimately swing this series. And then
it wasn't necessary to think about that anymore because the
Knicks did it themselves.
Speaker 2 (24:34):
Twenty nine point nine deficit. Nick storm back I had
the video component of Jason Smith losing his mind and
point I really I really thought, see what But here's
how the world changes.
Speaker 1 (24:47):

Speaker 2 (24:47):
We started tonight. As we came on air, things were
just absolutely horrid. You saw the floating dumpster fire and
the Knicks are dead, dead in the water, and people
are texting me and tweeting at me, going make sure
you check on your guy. How's Jason going to be?
Two hours later? I'm getting those texts. How are you
going to get through the next two hours with him

bouncing off walls?
Speaker 1 (25:11):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (25:12):
I mean down three to one? Has hope been extinguished?
Now we've watched these Spurs all three losses, you can
say we're winnable games, and that youth inexperience showing its
head is this it? Is it a wrap on Saturday?
Speaker 4 (25:28):
I would fully expect that San Antonio can get another win.
I would then fully expect that the Knicks. I think
this leaves the mark. I think this anytime, and we've
seen it multiple times. A team gives up a lead
of this size, Now you feel like no lead is
ever safe, and so you can get it to eighteen
(25:50):
twenty twenty two and as soon as the other team
scores a couple bucks in buckets in a row, the
nerves kick in and that momentum build quickly. I just
I don't see a way in which San Antonio has
the ability to win three games in a row. So
I don't know that it's necessarily closed in five. I
(26:11):
certainly do not believe that San Antonio Spurs are going
to roll over. We've we've already. They already demonstrated that
coming in with and winning Game three, So I'm not
expecting that. But I also don't believe that the Spurs
have the requisitibility whatever you want to point to, have
(26:31):
the requisitibility to win three in a row to salvage
this series. So yes, it's a matter of it's a
matter of when, not if. For the New York Knicks.

the way back to to eight months ago, and by
that I mean the first two men to the game tonight.
Let's go all the way back. Kat Gets called for
that first foul against the Aaron Fox, which didn't look
like any contact. And then the play that flipped the
entire game. Kat goes in and Wemby commits a foul.
(27:15):
They go and look, not only do they overturn it,
they give Kat the second foul. He's got to be
on the bench. The Spurs go out to a big role.
The Knicks wanted somebody to save them. What did you
make of those those two calls officiating wise, in the
first couple of minutes of the game, when we thought
the game was going to go one way.
Speaker 4 (27:30):
I honestly I didn't have a problem with them. I
you could you could argue that, I mean, there's always
the first couple of calls are to establish how the
game's going to be called. And uh. And the fact
is that Carl was late getting over and has one
of one of the things that has plagued him that
(27:52):
has not plagued him for the most part in he's playoffs,
is he picks up a lot of dumb fouls and uh.
And there's times where you're being You're you're not going
to get back. You got to give that up. And uh.
And I thought it was legit. I mean, I thought
that the turning, the overturning the call with with Wemby,
(28:13):
was the right call. The questionable one was was there
enough contact on that first play? But if he gets
one foul early, okay, that's bad. But he's then got
to realize, I have one foul in the first minute
of the game, I can't get a second one. And
and that's where Carl has often got himself into trouble.
So I'm not I'm not pointing to that and thinking
(28:34):
that that was one. That was not the reason that
the that the Spurs got off to the start that
they did. They were they had a lot else going on.
They were shooting it well. The Knicks once again looked
frazzled in terms of their execution. It just compounded things
that that Carl was not on the floor because clearly
(28:55):
what they wanted to do game plan wise was establish
him early because he hadn't They hadn't been able to
do that in in Game three and that and he
can be a difference maker. But as far as those
two calls I got, I don't have I don't have
an issue with it. I would say this game was
(29:16):
officiated better than Game three was. And and part of
the challenge for these referees was the way that Game
three was called because now it was you know, guys
are trying everything to see exactly where the line is
and uh, and it made a real challenge for Zach
Darby and his crew to establish that line. But I
(29:38):
thought I thought they were like they no bones about it.
We don't care, like we don't care that that that, uh,
these calls may be favoring the visitors or any of that.
We're gonna We're gonna call it as we see it.
We're gonna try to keep control of this game from
getting out of hand. And let's face it, the Knicks
were picked off at Wemby. They were trying all kinds
of things that that were technical fouls. The one on
(30:01):
Joly Alvarado like he found him, found him five six times.
They finally blew the whistle. So I think they were
just trying to not let this let the Knicks bully
their way uh to to a win and and and
I and the Knicks didn't need it.

the years on the show, the phrase it's just a

for stuff like this, right, And I started thinking about this,
you know, after it happened, is that you want to
go back to when the Knicks had come back and
they had made it a one point game with about
a minute and a half left to go, and Josh
Hart gets the breakaway layup turnover. He's going in the
(35:05):
entire garden anticipating it's gonna explode because the Knicks are
gonna lead for the first time all night. And he's
got nobody in front of him. Steph Castle is the
closest player to him, but he's like three feet behind him.
I don't know if maybe he thought Steph Castle was
gonna go up and he made a bad decision. All
he could have gone up and dunked it. He's up
above the rim and he just lets the ball go
(35:28):
and it bounces off the rim and bounces out chance
them to take the lead. That doesn't go. Then in
the ensuing possession, he's the one that fouls Wemby and
Wenby goes to the free throw line, Wenby misses both. Okay,
Then when it comes down it's still a one point
lead for the Knicks. And after Adaron Fox miss Steph
Castle comes in past two Josh Hart to grab the rebound,
(35:51):
he gets fouled, goes to the free throw line and
makes them both right. So now you've had three plays
by Josh Hart and the play that Knicks fans we
would look at for ever and go, that's the play
that blew in the fat, that blew it in the
finals four US. If we made that, we would have won.
It would have been the Knicks would have been up
three if they would have won the series. But Heart
missing that layup, and then the added of the next
(36:11):
two plays, he commits the foul on Wemby and he
gets beaten in the basketball by by Steph Castle. He
would have been the biggest goat. And I don't know
how you continue as a Nick with that. That would
have been so hard the trajectory of his career because
of that that one instance, right, the one play, but
really those three things back to back to back, and
with the Knicks pulling things out and weob becoming the
(36:32):
hero Josh Hart that gets forgotten and he's now just
recalibrating for game five, right, that's like, yeah, I blew it.
I don't know, it's a funny thing, but I can
laugh about it because we won the game and when
in the end, like these are plays that define people's careers,
Like you talk about Josh Hart, who's been one of
the best glue players in the NBA for the better
part of the last five years. Huge reason why the
(36:53):
Knicks are where they are. The guy does everything. What's
the one play you would remember him missing the breakaway
at the end of Game four where the Knicks were
about to erase a twenty nine point deficit and they
went on to lose the game, because because that play
might have changed things, he would have been the goat
of the bad way, you know, not the goat grains
of all time. He'd have been the goat, like the
guy that we would look at and said, man, how
(37:14):
does he miss out? What did I say to you
on the air right after that play happened? How does
he miss that layup? How does he miss it? And
he gets saved and now fate is kinder to him
and it's not to other guys because of the way
this goes well, think at the book end as well.
Speaker 2 (37:26):
Play We've chronicled a lot over the course of the Night, right,
Karl Anthony Towns that reversal off the challenge, he picks
up his second file. Who's the guy that tips the
inbound because go back and watch the inbound on that
final play for the Spurs. That's a beautifully constructed play
that might be a lob to the rim for an
easy layup. Instead Kat gets a finger on it, and
(37:48):
then we get the little fumbled play on that ultimately
ends with the clock is expiring in the Knicks holding
on to a one point win. But yeah, for Josh Hart,
the good the bad, right, because he shot terribly to
start the series. You're like, this is never gonna keep happening.
It's not gonna keep happening. And then he was on
fire and had his moments. But in this game, yeah,
(38:11):
you have the super cut of really really bad things
that were going on for him. The x extra moment, Right,
Jalen Brunson missing that shot which he'd hit over Wembin
Yama several times earlier in the game, was on fire
in the second half josh Hart six points, eight boards,
(38:33):
six assists, and that put back that had reminders of
me way back in the day. I could bring a
Northwestern basketball story to bear here against Brian Grant and Xavier,
where we had a seven footer who did one of
those in a waning moment that cost us a game.
Josh Hart, almost all these years later, almost had that
(38:54):
and would have had the Knicks fans apoplectic if it
had gone south.
Speaker 1 (38:58):
Are you kidding me? I mean that you think about
there's ways to lose, and there's ways to lose. That
would have just been gut punching. It would have been
gut punching for the Knicks to lose this game too. Hey,
we come all the way back. Even if you just lose, sure,
you come all the way back. Make it a one
point game, but the Spurs hit free throws at the end,
or you know, Brunson misses a three, whatever, normal ways
you lose a game. But to lose a game like this,
(39:19):
it's like you're getting gut punched and then you're getting
a knee to the jaw like that, Because that that's
how bad this would have been. Because it's the one
play you think back to and go like, do you
like I say? You know? I tell you how Seahawks
fans wake up every day and they go, how do
we not give the Baltimore Shawn?

Really, how do we not do that? Right? Like Knicks
fans will go, how does Josh Hart miss that leg?

with this game and play this, play this play. But
a couple of things to focus on here. We got
Rick Buker coming up in twenty minutes and I'll tell
you what he said something the other night on the

show that comes back and comes home to Rust, which
we'll get to. But two of the biggest things from
this game, right the Spurs have a huge lead car
Anthony Towns and foul trouble beginning of the game. The
Knicks don't recover from it. The Spurs get out to
a huge lead at Halftimes twenty nine point lead in
the middle of the third quarter, you're looking for an
inflection point for the comeback for the Knicks. Victor wembin
(01:13):
Yama gets called for a flagrant foul on Karl Anthony
Towns and at the time, it looked like it was
just to throw away moment, right, It didn't look like
it didn't look like it rose to the level of
a flagrant foul. However, they had just called one on
Mitchell Robinson earlier in the game for an elbow that
caught Wemby up in the neck. So this was an
elbow by Wemby. It wasn't. I can't say it wasn't
(01:34):
a foul, but it was. It was. It was an
elbow that caught Karl Anthony Towns under the chin. And
I am sure because I know psychology, I know people,
I'm sure. At that point the NBA said, yeah, okay,
we can give Wemby a flagrant on this. We kind
of biffed it not giving him the flagrant on the
Jalen Brunson play from two nights ago. Yeah, but so
we kind of owe them one, so we can give
them the flagrant here right, what's the damage. The Spurs
(01:56):
are up twenty nine flagrant fowl? What does it matter?
The Knicks outscored the Spurs from that moment fifty five
to twenty five. You're looking for the inflection point of
where things started. It was right there, that moment right there.
I don't know if that's where the Knicks decided we're
gonna keep playing where the Knicks said, now we're pissed.
But to see even at that point, Mike, to see
(02:17):
a twenty nine point deficit that even hey, all right,
find that we get the foul. Hey, okay, we're looking
for positivity. I can't believe that the Knicks said, yeah,
let's go expend all this energy in a comeback, because
this is just not our night. Whatever it is, this
is just not our night. And not only do they
come back and make it worthwhile they win the bleeping game,
(02:39):
but you want to go back and find the inflection
point for the beginning of this comeback, the beginning of
this story. That's where it starts right now. That wemby
flagrant in the third QAR.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
Yeah, I mean we talked about it as it developed,
and it didn't really look egregious on the grand scheme,
the Mitchell Robinson more a forearms shivered to the next
So you know the physicality that we thought would come
against Wembin Yama.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
There it was in that moment.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
We saw a lot of little micro pieces and stuff.
And certainly after the Robinson you had Wembin Yama sitting
on the ground laughing at him, saying, I'm in your head.
Well cut to the chase that for the Knicks, I
think what they heard the first two games, everybody said, hey,
everybody heard, you're the champions, and patting everybody on the back. Right,
(03:25):
Karl Anthony Towns getting the great hug that's been awaiting
him and recognizing his ten years in the year in
the league. Jalen Bronson hadn't played well, but came up
big in Game one and Game two and big moments. Right,
So all of that, you read your press clipping, So
all of a sudden, everybody swung the other way. We
had a kind of a listless effort for a good
(03:47):
chunk of the early part of Game three. A lot
of excuse making, right. Ah, there's you know political folks
in ah. It was tough to get in all of
this as opposed to just say, you know, we played badly,
we lost, and for this it was a no show
effort in the first half. I think someone at least
in the locker room, and I'd like to and I
(04:07):
can't wait to hear it in the post. I gotta
think someone at least did a Will Ferrell slammed a
locker and said, we gotta keep our composure and actually
play the basketball, because otherwise, what's the fish rap gonna
look like tomorrow? They'd lost this game, even if they'd
lost by one, right, they were gonna wear it. And
for all of these guys, that's all they've done as
members of the New York Knicks is they've had to
(04:29):
wear it time and time again. I mean, it's fifty
three years of it, it's twenty seven years of it.
Pick your timeline of all of this. It was gonna
be same old Knicks if they lost this game. And
I gotta think at least on some level they said,
all right, we're at least not gonna go down literally
without a fight. And then I can go into the
cacophony of voices now raising up against the Spurs because
(04:53):
there's a million things they did wrong to leave that
door a cracked to allow the Knicks to come and
just storm the cast.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
Now you mentioned that, and that's where we have to
get to this play right here. This is where. Look,
we talk to guys on the show all the time
when I say Rick Buker, and you talk about when
I say there's no one better to talk basketball with
than Rick Buker. I mean, look, we have guys him
and Mark Stein on the show. Rick Buker said this
to us now the last couple of times we've had
him on, and he had said watching watching the NBA Finals.
(05:23):
Still there's times to him where the Spurs play too fast,
where they're too fast, where he says, I'm standing up
and I'm just saying, guys, slow it down, slow it down.
I don't like that he's coaching against the Knicks, but
I get what he's doing. Well, it's like me.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
Again, I'm not cheering against your Knicks. I hate watching
bad sports, bad basketball. And as soon as you're dumb
on either side, we're gonna call it out here on
the radio.
Speaker 1 (05:46):
So you say, guys, slow it down, slow it down,
slow it down. Right, I've see, you know, slow it down.
They go too fast, they play too fast. A lot
and go back to the next to last sequence in
this game, right, the next to last sequence where the
Knicks worked down by one and they had the ball
(06:07):
and they don't get a great shot off and the
ball gets tipped out deep into the Knicks backcourt. D
Aaron Fox, who has alternately killed the Spurs in this series. Right.
To be fair, like Daron Fox a terrific player, but wow,
there's been times where his decision making he has absolutely
killed the Spurs. Right, the ball is loose, and as
(06:28):
an NBA player, you have to know this. He's been
the league right long enough now to know the situation.
In theory, you can say when you're racing to you know,
backcourt to get the ball, this could be a breakaway
layup for me in a three point lead. But he's
got to know when I'm getting the ball and who
knowb is back? Right, because you want to talk about
I don't nobe making a play before the play, yeah, right?
(06:50):
And who nob is back? When d Aaron Fox gets
that ball and he tries to just take a step
and rush for a layup, this is where as an
NBA and look, I said, the guy he's been in
the league for a long time. You gotta know, Okay,
the defender is there, I'm out of control. I need
to dribble this back out, take time off the clock,
make the Knicks foul, and I'm going to the free
(07:12):
throw line. I'm an eighty percent shooter from the free
throw line, and I'm getting to the free throw line
to try to win this game. There's a lot of
chaos happening right now, and the defender is here, and oh,
by the way, it's one of the top defenders in
the NBA and og Anunoby right, you gotta make a
better decision. But he plays too fast and he decides
to go in for the layup. I can make this
game winning play. And what happens. Anonobe rejects it. The
(07:34):
Knicks get the ball, they get the ball cross half court,
they call time out. Brunson shot Anunobi on there. From there,
But you want to go back and talk about what
a horrible decision that was for de Aaron Fox, You're
gonna hear the play and this is where the If
you are the Spurs, the one play in this game
that you want back is this one. It's a back
runs a e the drive, the pillers up Chuck on
(07:56):
go rebound, deplective in the back court, Fox tuns a
chance to get out, Fox, hasn't it? Sun my second
tomading Nick radio on the call, and as we know
from there, the big shot the play by Anonobe the
Spurs can't get a hoop at the other end with
one second left. But that watching that play, I guarantee
you we'll talk to Rick Buker in five minutes more
(08:17):
or ten minutes Mike, and he's gonna say I told
them they play too fast. I keep telling them they
played too fast. They won't listen to me.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
It's funny, I tweeted out just the first of what
will be a nine part missive of the mistakes of
the Spurs, and that that led it so the fact
that we're talking about it right now, leading into our
conversation with Rick.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
Let's go back to it.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
O Gianoba a fantastic play right as he closes out
and he's back And how many times do we see
the Knicks that when it wasn't Bronson? Think about Josh Hart,
think about Alvarado, Think about all the Nick players going
down into the low post. How many times did they
cut and turned back out if they knew that the
shot was gonna get challenged, whether Wenby was already back
(08:58):
or whatever. Live to find a better shot, a better sequence,
and a better opportunity to finish. Daron Fox, who we've
called into into question a number of times over these
four games, Jason, another one of those you know what,
let ananobe fly by ball, fake, let him fall into you,
get to the file line, or just cut back and
(09:20):
extend it, make them chase you down instead. The ball
ends in Alvarado's hands. Eventually, Fox commits the file at
five point four seconds as we set up in the
front court, and away we go. But yeah, it's another
decision of along with all of the quick three point shots,
which is a whole other, uh you know, level of chaos,
(09:41):
But in that particular moment, Yeah, slow down, stop for you.
It's like, that's great because that's who they are. I mean,
they actually because Jason, they average twenty five years of age.
I mean, they just don't know. And Daron Fox played
a lot with the Kings. He's not been in these situations. No,
it does a new thing to him. It is a
new thing to him. It isn't but I mean that's

where But but you've played a long time. You have to
know that the end of games like that's what you did.

You have to do right. You can't just you can't.
I mean, I'm gonna try to make this heroic play.
If it was a tie game or you were down one,
I get it, But you have the lead, right j R. Smith.
You gotta know the situation of the game. Is that
not right for j R? Smith? J R. Smith Smith's
huge boner. I mean that. I think everybody who has

ever played for the Knicks was at the game tonight,
except I don't know there's anybody guy guys that were.

remember we went to a bar here in the Los Angeles.
It was a Bears bar, and just seeing the fifty
years of jerseys on display, it's like, Wow, they got
you for that guy. He played two games man, But yeah,

j R. Smith is invoked here and the memory there.

I mean, like, that's a play where if you talk
about all the things the Spurs want back, Yeah, like
the because it's a decision. It's not a play, it's
a decison. That's why what would you would want Wemby's
missed free throws back right? Like, I mean the guy
after Josh Hart misses a layup that was gonna give
the Nicks the lead, Wendy, I know, right he got
that's a bad decision. That's a decision. That's what they
would have looked back at had the Knicks loss this game, Like, dude,
(11:50):
you're going into dunket. I know that he felt that
Steph Castle was behind him, but just duck it. That
would have been the play the Knicks fans going, that
would have been it, right, But Wemby like, Okay, he
missed two free It's not like anything. It was a
bad decision he missed two free throws. This was a
decision that the Aaron Fox has to make and know
the situation, man, like you gotta know. This is where
when the Knicks took a two games to none lead,
(12:12):
we said, this is why I said, I want the
Knicks playing the Spurs instead of the Knicks playing the
Thunder because the Spurs haven't been here, not like the
Knicks have been there, but the Knicks have been through
the wars of Eastern Conference second round and Eastern Conference
Finals the last couple of years. At least they've been
through that. This is a huge, you know, new run
for the Spurs to get back saying oh wow, this
is everything is new for them. So I knew at
(12:33):
the end of games that it was going to favor
the Knicks. And this falls into that as well, like
that's a that's a play that you know, a team
has to know. You have to make the right call
there instead of playing too fast, And that's the Spurs did.
And that's why the Spurs sitting back, why they're down.
They're going We've been the better team for the better
part of this entire series, and we're going home down
three to one, Like That's where the Spurs have to

sit there and say, what can we possibly do now?
How can we possibly win this series with what what
we've seen so far?

og and Unobi at the top of that list for
the Knicks and joining us now I'm the hotline to
break it all down is a guy who potentially foreshadowed
this for the better part of the last week Fox
Sports won NBA Insider Extraordinary, Rick Bucker. When we broke
(16:19):
down the first couple of games of the series, Rick
said one thing. The Spurs play too fast. I'm standing up,
I'm screaming at my television slow down, you're playing too fast,
And we talked about a few minutes ago, what was
the biggest play of the game. The Aaron Fox chasing
down that loose ball instead of dribbling it back out,
tries to go in for a fast layup. He gets
(16:41):
it blocked, Knicks get possession, and Unobi's heroics. The Knicks
are up three to one. Rick. Anything else you want
to let us know about the rest of the series
that goes, just let me know right now ahead of time.
Take some of the tenseness out of it for me.
Speaker 4 (16:53):
Yeah, no, I think we pretty much covered it.
Speaker 1 (16:56):
Never go.
Speaker 4 (17:00):
Yeah no, I'm glad you brought up that. That was
the first thing that I thought was, dearon, what are
you doing like, you don't have to score there? You
need to run the clock out. You ran down the ball,
you had the opportunity, you guys. I mean I actually,
starting in the third quarter, I did not like the
way the San Antonio Spurs were playing. They obviously were
(17:22):
shooting lights out, particularly from three. At the beginning of
the game. My first thought was, you're not going to
continue to shoot seventy five percent from three. That just
does not happen, that's going to balance out. And so
if you think that, and clearly they evidently did in
spite of it starting to balance out, there were three
for seventeen in the second half from long range. They
(17:45):
never adjusted, and when the game got to fifteen going
into the fourth quarter, I said, this is a game.
This is a game, and the Knicks simply walked them down.
And then we saw once again, I just look the
Aaron Fox putting the ball in the Aaron Fox's hands
as many times as they did. I know Dylan Harper
(18:07):
is a rookie. I would not have continued to put
the ball in in the Aaron's hands. And simply it
might be the he might be the veteran, he might
be the veteran guard among what they have, but the
reality is he's only been to the playoffs once before.
Asking him to close out a game in the playoffs
(18:29):
is more than I would do at this at this stage,
especially if he's still hampered by by the ankle. So
a lot of credit to go around for I mean, honestly,
watching the first half, I was like, Man san Antonio
has identified the offensive weak points for the New York Knicks,
(18:50):
and they're exploiting that and that may change this series.
And then we got to the second half and the
youth of the San Antonios perst showed up again and
it was like, oh, this is why they were down
two one in the series to begin with.
Speaker 2 (19:04):
Well, let's go to the brilliant og Annanobi flying in U.
Don't they teach in in basic grade school basketball? Hey,
keep an eye on the inbounder.
Speaker 4 (19:16):
Yeah, well, usually it's for a for a shot. But again,
Aaron Fox was in the in it was his play.
He came over from guarding the inbound and I really
didn't understand why you're gonna double team or try to
double team Jalen Brunson at what twenty seven to twenty
eight feet You're not he had too far to come.
(19:37):
I don't know. If that was I'd find it hard
to believe that Mitch Johnson said we're gonna we're gonna
double team Jalen that far away from the basket. But
it was Daron coming over that gave Jalen a free run.
And then Dylan Harper wasn't wasn't boxing anybody out, and
(19:59):
that's that's what created the opportunity. But again I just
lack of execution, lack of understanding exactly what you have
to do in those situations. The San Antonio spurs, lack
of experience and how to close out playoff games reared
ats ugly ahead once again.
Speaker 2 (20:15):
Is o g Nnobi now the greatest nick of all time?
He is tonight with that second half shooting plus those
two plays at the end of the game, Rick, I mean,
that's the stuff statues are built on.
Speaker 4 (20:29):
It's really it's interesting because we've, like, you know, we've
talked a little bit about this. Can you win a
championship with Jayalen Bunson as your best player? And you
could look at this, You could look at this series
and say, no, you can't. But that doesn't mean that
the Knicks can't win because O Danby is performing like
(20:51):
that best player. Or you get sort of like the
Warriors when they had staff. It's like you get multiple
contributions from guys that, uh, that less than the responsibility
of the sixth the six foot guy who's your your
go to closer.
Speaker 1 (21:08):
Well, well, let let's be fair here. You know, I
told you Jalen Brunson was terrible the first three games
of this series. He was fantastic tonight, he just he
missed that shot at the end, but Anonoby with a
tipping but outside he shot while he didn't turn the
ball over. This was This was his best game. And
twenty nine point comebacks don't don't come unless your best
players is starting to get shots like he did.
Speaker 4 (21:29):
Present. No, he had, he had a very good game.
I still don't know if I would say that he
like you know, and this gets into sort of the
definition of when we say that this guy was the
best player and and won the series like he did
his part without question.
Speaker 6 (21:46):
But.
Speaker 4 (21:48):
The contribution of anenobe and what they're getting from from
other places, it's it's it's not a domin it was
I would say this, it was a really good performance.
I don't know that Jalen brunts and even tonight will
this being his best performance, dominated the game. He did
what he had to do to help the Nicks win.
Speaker 1 (22:08):

Speaker 6 (22:08):
Can we leave it at that?
Speaker 2 (22:09):
Sure, ten to fifteen second half of Brunson, Let's just
go to the structure that is Madison Square Garden. What
was wrong with the shooting angles and vision on that
end of the court because both teams were terrible.
Speaker 4 (22:23):
Yeah, I don't know. I'd have to look at the
seating chart and see exactly which which Hollywood stars were
down there that were potentially distracting the players. I don't know,
it's good to it. I don't have any not being
in the building. I got nothing for you.
Speaker 1 (22:43):
What gremlins were on that end? Yeah? No, So let's
go back to another moment. Rick. You know, we talked
about the d Aaron Fox play. No matter what, no
matter how bad things were going for the Spurs offensively
in the third quarter, it's a twenty nine point lead,
and when he gets called for the flagrant foul, and
if you want to look for an inflection point, the
(23:04):
Knicks outscored the Spurs from that point on fifty five
twenty five. Now, I don't know if it was where
it pissed the Knicks off. I don't know if this
was where they sensed a little bit or they sensed
up a little bit of screw it. We finally got
this call on Wemby. The garden comes alive. But it
was just different from that moment on and it shouldn't
have been. It should be Okay, Yeah, Wenby gets a flagrant,
(23:24):
that's great, it's a twenty nine point devisit, but things
were different from that point on.
Speaker 4 (23:29):
Yeah, you know what what I felt early on was
that they they were looking to the rest to make
a call. They got two wound up either begging for
calls or looking at the rest. I just thought that
they were they were distracted looking for calls rather than
just playing the game. And to your point, I don't
know whether that changed their mindset or their temperament or
(23:52):
is like, Okay, we got one, you know what, let's
let's just play now. But but yeah, that was it was.
It's into and it's especially interesting because of all the
kind of the back and forth and some of the
stuff that Wemby has done. And he's one he's one
more flagrant foul away from missing a game, if I'm
(24:12):
not mistaken. Yeah, So that that was I thought that
was interesting getting that even prior to the Knicks winning
this game. I was thinking even at too too, if
Wemby's on the on the verge of missing a game,
that could that could ultimately swing this series. And then
it wasn't necessary to think about that anymore because the
Knicks did it themselves.
Speaker 2 (24:34):
Twenty nine point nine deficit. Nick storm back I had
the video component of Jason Smith losing his mind and
point I really I really thought, see what But here's
how the world changes.
Speaker 1 (24:47):

Speaker 2 (24:47):
We started tonight. As we came on air, things were
just absolutely horrid. You saw the floating dumpster fire and
the Knicks are dead, dead in the water, and people
are texting me and tweeting at me, going make sure
you check on your guy. How's Jason going to be?
Two hours later? I'm getting those texts. How are you
going to get through the next two hours with him

bouncing off walls?
Speaker 1 (25:11):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (25:12):
I mean down three to one? Has hope been extinguished?
Now we've watched these Spurs all three losses, you can
say we're winnable games, and that youth inexperience showing its
head is this it? Is it a wrap on Saturday?
Speaker 4 (25:28):
I would fully expect that San Antonio can get another win.
I would then fully expect that the Knicks. I think
this leaves the mark. I think this anytime, and we've
seen it multiple times. A team gives up a lead
of this size, Now you feel like no lead is
ever safe, and so you can get it to eighteen
(25:50):
twenty twenty two and as soon as the other team
scores a couple bucks in buckets in a row, the
nerves kick in and that momentum build quickly. I just
I don't see a way in which San Antonio has
the ability to win three games in a row. So
I don't know that it's necessarily closed in five. I
(26:11):
certainly do not believe that San Antonio Spurs are going
to roll over. We've we've already. They already demonstrated that
coming in with and winning Game three, So I'm not
expecting that. But I also don't believe that the Spurs
have the requisitibility whatever you want to point to, have
(26:31):
the requisitibility to win three in a row to salvage
this series. So yes, it's a matter of it's a
matter of when, not if. For the New York Knicks.
Speaker 1 (26:43):
Words, Rick Bucker never thought he'd say for five hundred. Please, Alex,
now you know what that is correct?
Speaker 4 (26:51):
For this year?
Speaker 1 (26:53):
That is correct. Now. I want to take you all
the way back to to eight months ago, and by
that I mean the first two men to the game tonight.
Let's go all the way back. Kat Gets called for
that first foul against the Aaron Fox, which didn't look
like any contact. And then the play that flipped the
entire game. Kat goes in and Wemby commits a foul.
(27:15):
They go and look, not only do they overturn it,
they give Kat the second foul. He's got to be
on the bench. The Spurs go out to a big role.
The Knicks wanted somebody to save them. What did you
make of those those two calls officiating wise, in the
first couple of minutes of the game, when we thought
the game was going to go one way.
Speaker 4 (27:30):
I honestly I didn't have a problem with them. I
you could you could argue that, I mean, there's always
the first couple of calls are to establish how the
game's going to be called. And uh. And the fact
is that Carl was late getting over and has one
of one of the things that has plagued him that
(27:52):
has not plagued him for the most part in he's playoffs,
is he picks up a lot of dumb fouls and uh.
And there's times where you're being You're you're not going
to get back. You got to give that up. And uh.
And I thought it was legit. I mean, I thought
that the turning, the overturning the call with with Wemby,
(28:13):
was the right call. The questionable one was was there
enough contact on that first play? But if he gets
one foul early, okay, that's bad. But he's then got
to realize, I have one foul in the first minute
of the game, I can't get a second one. And
and that's where Carl has often got himself into trouble.
So I'm not I'm not pointing to that and thinking
(28:34):
that that was one. That was not the reason that
the that the Spurs got off to the start that
they did. They were they had a lot else going on.
They were shooting it well. The Knicks once again looked
frazzled in terms of their execution. It just compounded things
that that Carl was not on the floor because clearly
(28:55):
what they wanted to do game plan wise was establish
him early because he hadn't They hadn't been able to
do that in in Game three and that and he
can be a difference maker. But as far as those
two calls I got, I don't have I don't have
an issue with it. I would say this game was
(29:16):
officiated better than Game three was. And and part of
the challenge for these referees was the way that Game
three was called because now it was you know, guys
are trying everything to see exactly where the line is
and uh, and it made a real challenge for Zach
Darby and his crew to establish that line. But I
(29:38):
thought I thought they were like they no bones about it.
We don't care, like we don't care that that that, uh,
these calls may be favoring the visitors or any of that.
We're gonna We're gonna call it as we see it.
We're gonna try to keep control of this game from
getting out of hand. And let's face it, the Knicks
were picked off at Wemby. They were trying all kinds
of things that that were technical fouls. The one on
(30:01):
Joly Alvarado like he found him, found him five six times.
They finally blew the whistle. So I think they were
just trying to not let this let the Knicks bully
their way uh to to a win and and and
I and the Knicks didn't need it.
Speaker 1 (30:17):
Ultimately, he's on Twitter at Rick Buker, that is at
Rick Buker, the On the Ball podcast, and of all
the years on the show, the phrase it's just a
matter of when, not if. For the Knicks the most
unbelievable things that he has ever said, probably in his

for stuff like this, right, And I started thinking about this,
you know, after it happened, is that you want to
go back to when the Knicks had come back and
they had made it a one point game with about
a minute and a half left to go, and Josh
Hart gets the breakaway layup turnover. He's going in the
(35:05):
entire garden anticipating it's gonna explode because the Knicks are
gonna lead for the first time all night. And he's
got nobody in front of him. Steph Castle is the
closest player to him, but he's like three feet behind him.
I don't know if maybe he thought Steph Castle was
gonna go up and he made a bad decision. All
he could have gone up and dunked it. He's up
above the rim and he just lets the ball go
(35:28):
and it bounces off the rim and bounces out chance
them to take the lead. That doesn't go. Then in
the ensuing possession, he's the one that fouls Wemby and
Wenby goes to the free throw line, Wenby misses both. Okay,
Then when it comes down it's still a one point
lead for the Knicks. And after Adaron Fox miss Steph
Castle comes in past two Josh Hart to grab the rebound,
(35:51):
he gets fouled, goes to the free throw line and
makes them both right. So now you've had three plays
by Josh Hart and the play that Knicks fans we
would look at for ever and go, that's the play
that blew in the fat, that blew it in the
finals four US. If we made that, we would have won.
It would have been the Knicks would have been up
three if they would have won the series. But Heart
missing that layup, and then the added of the next
(36:11):
two plays, he commits the foul on Wemby and he
gets beaten in the basketball by by Steph Castle. He
would have been the biggest goat. And I don't know
how you continue as a Nick with that. That would
have been so hard the trajectory of his career because
of that that one instance, right, the one play, but
really those three things back to back to back, and
with the Knicks pulling things out and weob becoming the
(36:32):
hero Josh Hart that gets forgotten and he's now just
recalibrating for game five, right, that's like, yeah, I blew it.
I don't know, it's a funny thing, but I can
laugh about it because we won the game and when
in the end, like these are plays that define people's careers,
Like you talk about Josh Hart, who's been one of
the best glue players in the NBA for the better
part of the last five years. Huge reason why the
(36:53):
Knicks are where they are. The guy does everything. What's
the one play you would remember him missing the breakaway
at the end of Game four where the Knicks were
about to erase a twenty nine point deficit and they
went on to lose the game, because because that play
might have changed things, he would have been the goat
of the bad way, you know, not the goat grains
of all time. He'd have been the goat, like the
guy that we would look at and said, man, how
(37:14):
does he miss out? What did I say to you
on the air right after that play happened? How does
he miss that layup? How does he miss it? And
he gets saved and now fate is kinder to him
and it's not to other guys because of the way
this goes well, think at the book end as well.
Speaker 2 (37:26):
Play We've chronicled a lot over the course of the Night, right,
Karl Anthony Towns that reversal off the challenge, he picks
up his second file. Who's the guy that tips the
inbound because go back and watch the inbound on that
final play for the Spurs. That's a beautifully constructed play
that might be a lob to the rim for an
easy layup. Instead Kat gets a finger on it, and
(37:48):
then we get the little fumbled play on that ultimately
ends with the clock is expiring in the Knicks holding
on to a one point win. But yeah, for Josh Hart,
the good the bad, right, because he shot terribly to
start the series. You're like, this is never gonna keep happening.
It's not gonna keep happening. And then he was on
fire and had his moments. But in this game, yeah,
(38:11):
you have the super cut of really really bad things
that were going on for him. The x extra moment, Right,
Jalen Brunson missing that shot which he'd hit over Wembin
Yama several times earlier in the game, was on fire
in the second half josh Hart six points, eight boards,
(38:33):
six assists, and that put back that had reminders of
me way back in the day. I could bring a
Northwestern basketball story to bear here against Brian Grant and Xavier,
where we had a seven footer who did one of
those in a waning moment that cost us a game.
Josh Hart, almost all these years later, almost had that
(38:54):
and would have had the Knicks fans apoplectic if it
had gone south.
Speaker 1 (38:58):
Are you kidding me? I mean that you think about
there's ways to lose, and there's ways to lose. That
would have just been gut punching. It would have been
gut punching for the Knicks to lose this game too. Hey,
