Now let's get this party started. You're listening to Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
Greetings welcome inside final hour tonight the jason smith show
with my best friend mike harman well-dressed hobo.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
Fours up baby.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
There you go i'm telling you say that it's very
coach beard-esque like that's a pretty good i don't know
if it's a you're doing that legitimately but that's a
good coach beard well legitimately illegitimately if it hits the
ear just so so right we all win hey baby
hey baby hey.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
Come on now.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
So, outside of college football, right? We got more on
the biggest story going on the last couple of days
with Michigan and the Hail Mary coming up in a
few minutes, right? We got stuff on Bill Belichick. A
developing story for something to start paying attention to now
that we're moving on to the elimination phase at the
(01:21):
Worlds for Team USA. Now, today... Team USA after yesterday,
the big scare they had against Italy. They pull out
a three-point win. Nobody really plays very well, right? Carol
Lawson basically threw everybody under the bus after. If we're
not playing well because we're not together, because we're not
shooting well, we're not doing this, we're not doing this,
we're not doing this, we're not doing this, we're not
(01:43):
doing that. Okay, okay, okay. They came back out today
against Chechia and won in a blowout fashion. It was
never in doubt. This is a game that the USA
rolled on from the beginning, and now they're on to
the quarterfinals, right? 105-64 is your final. Again, nothing crazy
to write home about. USA was up 29-15 after the
(02:05):
first quarter. This was over very early. Kaitlyn Clark, 9.7 assists.
Paige Beckers had 10. Angel Reese had 13 points and
6 rebounds, right? Brianna Stewart had 19. This was a
game where, okay, it's a feel-good get-well game for the
United States. But was it really a get-well game for
(02:26):
the United States? Because... You're seeing something starting to gain
some attention over the course of the past couple of hours.
And I'll tell you what, it feels like stuff like
this has been just under the surface of Team USA
at the Worlds since this tournament started. There's a time
(02:48):
with about three and a half to go in the
fourth quarter. The United States is up big. They're winning 96-58, right?
And Caitlin Clark hits a three to make it 99-58. Okay,
obviously not that big a deal. Okay, she's shooting a
three while up 40, okay. Well, you know. But she
makes the three, and the camera's cut to the bench
where Jackie Young is on the bench, and she's got
(03:11):
her hands up, and she's clapping. And next to her
is Kalia Copper. and she's clapping after Caitlin Clark hits
the three, and you can see her say to Copper,
you better clap, because Copper's not clapping, and after she
says that, she moves her hands from under her jersey,
she starts to clap.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
This is a thing, right? This is a thing because
when something like this comes up, you know this has
been talked about. And this goes further than just does
everybody hate Kaitlyn Clark? Are her teammates freezing her out? Look,
here's a possession where no one passed to her and
she was open, all this. Okay, I think this goes
bigger than Kaitlyn Clark and how much her teammates don't
(03:53):
like her or if they don't like her or if
the team doesn't like her. All the stuff we've heard
over the course of the past couple of years in
the WNBA. I think this goes, it's as simple as
the veterans versus the youngsters. The ones who have come
in in the last couple of years and made the
WNBA must see TV. Because no matter how you want
to cut it up, I get it. I feel bad
(04:15):
for any player that, hey, I played 15 years in
the W, I didn't make any money, and now here
come these players and they're in for a half a
second and look at the money they're making. Okay, I
get it, but that's sports. Like, that's how it goes everywhere, right?
You sound like a an old, bitter MLB star from
the 80s. I made $ 3 million for my entire career,
(04:36):
and I left the game with 3,500 hits and 600
home runs. Okay, that's how it goes. That's how it goes,
Mike Schmidt. That's how it goes, man, Goose Gossage. That's
how it goes, right? This is how it is. But
you can tell that it's deeper than just Caitlyn because
think about a couple of things leading into this tournament, right?
We made a big deal Caitlyn Clark not starting. Well,
you know what? Paige Beckers isn't starting. Angel Reese isn't starting.
(04:58):
And what's happening is All the young players are playing together.
The five oldest players on the team, the five who
have been around the most, the vets, they're all starting. Right.
So now I'm sitting here going, oh, I think now
I understand going into this. Maybe Kara lost. Maybe Team
USA is dealing with other stuff and they're just trying
to keep this team together as long as it takes
(05:19):
to win to win a medal and move on. because
we're never going to get them to like each other. Really,
you're telling me the best thing is for this is
your starting lineup that's out there every game that you
have to pull out that can only play 15 minutes
because they're only plus three or plus four in a game? Right?
Breonna Stewart's still a terrific player, but you look at,
you know, Jack Young starting over Kaitlyn Clark. I mean,
(05:40):
what's happening here? But you are seeing all the young
players check into the game at the same time, right?
After the first few minutes, what happens? As one, Kaitlyn
Clark checks in. With Paige Beckers, Angel Reese, Aaliyah Boston
comes in right after, and the young players all play together.
Why is this? In no other sport do you see, well,
(06:00):
we only play the older players together and the younger
players together. Are you really putting together the best team?
Or are you putting together a team because people can't
get over biases and not liking one another? Right now, suddenly, like,
why is this going this way? Why are all the
vets playing together and everybody comes in as one, right?
Why isn't Kaitlyn Clark the first person off the bench?
Whatever it is. Like, why is that not happening? And
(06:22):
then you see something like this where Jackie Young says,
you better clap, and Copper not clapping. Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Why is this a thing where a teammate has to
remind another teammate about clapping? This doesn't happen unless you
know behind the scenes this was talked about. And supporting
the team and supporting all the players was something that
(06:44):
everybody had to address. So you know things aren't sunshine, lollipops,
and rainbows because you wouldn't have... You wouldn't have to
have a player reminding somebody else to clap when Kaitlyn
Clark makes a three, right? The fact is, you better
clap means that you know they're going to go back
and look and see who's not clapping. And if you're
not clapping, you're not going to play. You better clap.
(07:05):
Here's Jackie Young telling a teammate, you better clap. I
don't want to see you get benched. or something happened
to you, so you know this is a conversation. This
is a snippet from a 30-point blowout game, but it
says so much into what this team is probably dealing
with off the court. Yeah, you show me these videos
where it looks like they like each other. Yeah, I
see Kaitlyn Clark and Paige Beckers and Angel Reese having
fun together, right? I don't see Kaitlyn Clark and Breanna
(07:28):
Stewart palling around. I don't see Kaitlyn Clark and Jackie
Young having fun. You see this team, hey, there's fun
moments here that they're putting out on social media. But
it's like there's clicks on this team and you have
the vets are together and the young players are together.
I wonder how much they all get along. I wonder
if they can't stand each other. Because there's no way
this you better clap comes up unless there wasn't an
issue with supporting your teammates that they didn't feel the
(07:51):
coaching staff felt they needed to address. That's a huge
window into what's going on with Team USA.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
I think when you get down to it, right, we've
had this multiple times, right? The line changes where you've
got the the shift in the the power of a squad.
Look at what we just watched with the United States
women's national team. It got awkward at times towards the
end of the run of. of all of those greats,
how many minutes they were going to play, coming off
the bench, were they happy about that, a lot of grousing,
(08:19):
and some statements every once in a while, if you
wanted to read through, of folks that were not happy
with the way things were shifting to younger players. We've
seen it with Team USA basketball. I mean, it's been
plenty of opportunities for this. Just, I think this becomes...
the talking point coming out of all the stuff that's
(08:41):
going on in the WNBA going, all right, at least
for a couple of weeks, we'll get by all this. Right. So,
you know, if you're on the bench cheer, if you're like,
I don't pay attention to what men or women or
anybody are doing on the bench, unless it's college or
I guess, you know, below, right. If your teammates aren't
into it at those levels, I get a little bit, uh,
(09:03):
you know, a little sad, right? You're not supporting your
teammates at that point. And the pros, I don't worry
about their reactions too much because a lot of times,
you know, they're talking to each other. I mean, we've
seen guys on their phones. We've seen guys talking to
folks in the first row behind them, all right? I mean,
we've had plenty of that. But I don't put a
lot of stock most of the time. But when you
(09:25):
go to this stage where it is supposed to be,
you know, a united front as, you know, representing the
country and all that, I suppose there was some, some
talking to of, Hey, let's, let's show that we're, we're
together here and, you know, support each other, whatever. I
can't say that the younger ones have been, you know,
(09:46):
shouting and doing the full scream and towel.
Speaker 3 (09:48):
Waves on the bench.
Speaker 1 (09:49):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (09:49):
I don't know that we've gotten the, the Zapruder film to,
to go the other way, but to your point, yeah,
I mean, it's there, there's always that uncomfortable piece to
it all when there's that transition and how the team
is being deployed on the court. Certainly kind of head-scratching
(10:12):
that you would have, not that you had a lot
of practices together, that you might have found some balance
between old and new to, to see how you could
play together, but everybody wants their touches. Everybody wants their
score sheet and whatever. So certainly that, that rivalry and
competition is going to remain.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (10:32):
You know, I, I just wonder that how, how much
of this is instead of we're excited to go to
the FIBAs and win, win world cup, how much of
this is just, I just want it to be over
and us be the winners. I feel that way sometimes,
that winning is a relief, and it's a whole situation
that didn't start with excitement. Like, just think about going
(10:53):
into this, right? This should be a celebration of women's basketball.
And what do we find out? Well, Asia Wilson's not coming.
Wait a minute. What? Not coming. She's dinged up. She
doesn't want to go, and you see all these rumors. Oh,
she doesn't want to come because she's jealous of Caitlyn.
She wants to see the team win without her, all
this different stuff. But anyway, it starts with the best
player saying, I'm not going. Okay. And then we get there,
(11:16):
and there's questions about who's starting and who is not,
and you're wondering about getting along, and all this stuff
is still posted. And you just can't get past the
fact that these rivalries in the W, they're going to
continue on here when you get on the world stage.
And the thing is, you look at the dream team,
(11:37):
and when the men go, it's like, you know they
can't stand each other. You know they can. No, exactly.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
I want my shots. I want, you know, ISO for me.
Speaker 2 (11:46):
Yeah. Right.
Speaker 1 (11:47):
Like I want to, I want to win. I don't
want to be on this team that settles for a
silver medal. I don't want to be on that team.
I don't want to be on the Allen Iverson, Lamar
Odom team that couldn't win the gold medal. And so
you put your differences aside and you win. It becomes
a better, Hey, this is a great experience. We won
when I'm going through, but this seems like they can't
(12:07):
even do that. Like the two people I see that
can do this, they're, or Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark.
You know they hate each other. They could say, we're cool,
we're cool, we're cool. You know they hate each other.
But do I see them playing well together? 100%. Do
I see them looking out for each other on the court?
Of course I see that. That happens, and I'm like, okay,
if they can do it, why can't everybody else do it?
(12:29):
But it just feels like I'm looking for the good
vibes and the good outcome and the celebration of the
sport and being able to say, hey, this is the best.
We're sending the best of what we have over to
go win a medal. It's going to be a two
week commercial for the WNBA. And I don't get that.
I get, it's the same kinds of stories where Caitlin
Clark's getting frozen out. You look at some of the
(12:50):
cherry pick stuff and go, wow, how did no one
see her open on that? How did you, how did
you turn the ball over rather than pass to Caitlin Clark? Okay.
How do you have to remind your teammate to clap?
Like why, why is that even a thing yet? This
is what, this is what this story is right now.
And I don't want to just, we just want to,
at this point, they're like, We just want to win
and have it be over with, right? We just want
to win and have it be over. The excitement level
(13:11):
of it, what we expected to go through with this
is now that's not happening anymore. Well, they also get
to the point where you're tired of changing up how
your season's going, right? Here's a break. Okay, play another
couple weeks. Here's another break. you're tired.
Speaker 3 (13:27):
You're done with it.
Speaker 4 (13:28):
You just want to finish the season and work into
a straight line instead of, all right, now we're practicing
with another squad. Now we're having to get along for
a couple of weeks, relinquish some of our normal playmaking
or responsibilities or leadership roles and be part of this
collective when you're used to running your squad a certain way. Like,
(13:49):
I could see it where it's frustrating as hell. Like,
you're just starting to get momentum for the final stretch
of the WNBAC. It's like, no, no, no, hold on,
hold on. We're going to have another break here. So
I could see that. And for the Clark and Reese thing,
the more it goes on and the longer we give oxygen,
I'm more convinced that it's now WWE kayfabe. They don't
(14:12):
have to love each other, but everybody realizes it's good
for business. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (14:17):
No, but look, and the thing, look, you see this go, okay,
they put their stuff aside when they're playing, right? All
I needed to see was before they were checking into
the game, the very first game coming in, Caitlin Clark
was ready to go on the court, and it would
have been a tee, and Angel Reese has got to wait, wait, wait,
wait for the buzzer. Okay, she comes back, and they
go out. Like, I knew then everything's cool, because if
it wasn't, she would have easily let her go on
(14:37):
the court and get a technical. Ah, there you go.
Go embarrass yourself.
Speaker 2 (14:40):
Look at that.
Speaker 1 (14:40):
You couldn't wait to get on the court, get a tee. Like,
I knew then... And they get it. When they have
to play together, and I've seen on the All-Star team,
when they beat the All-Stars, like, okay, I get it.
They play together. They put stuff behind because they want
to win, right? I know that about the both of them.
They both want to win. And when you want to win,
you can do this. And when I see a lot
(15:02):
of stuff in the WNBA, I feel like that should
always be the push. Hey, I want to win so
I can put it all away. But when you get
to a point where you say, I want to win,
but I only want to win like this, that's where
the W gets into their problems. That's where it's, I
want to win, but I don't want Kaitlin Clark to
have credit. I want to win, but I don't want
the younger players to have credit for it, right? I
(15:22):
want to win, but you get into that and suddenly, okay,
I know you don't really want to win. That winning is,
you only want to win a certain way. And when
you get to the, when it's United States against everybody else,
you just got to find a way to get that W.
Speaker 4 (15:33):
I would say that was the one quote that I
remember from Lawson, you know, and we've certainly... had questions
in terms of these rotations or whatever, but she did
come out before things really got going with this tournament
of knowing that the young players are all about teamwork
and winning. So she has at least given them A
(15:55):
little bit of a bucket of flowers in that regard.
Speaker 3 (15:59):
But we'll see how this goes, right? Because yesterday's game,
not pretty. Not exactly what.
Speaker 1 (16:04):
They had in mind.
Speaker 4 (16:05):
Had to sweat it out. Clark on the bench and
0 for 6 and all of that stuff. Big bounce
back today and a resounding win.
Speaker 3 (16:13):
But ebb and flow, ebb and flow as we go
through this tournament.
Speaker 1 (16:18):
Exit out by the Fresca exit, swollen dome, the Jason

Fox Sports Radio. The Jason Smith Show with my best friend,
Mike Harmon. So 48 hours later, the Hail Mary stands.
Michigan is still the winners over Western Michigan. And now
we move on to what's next. Well, we're going to
(17:38):
get a greater understanding what the final second of a
college football game is going to be. Mike Harmon, if
there is one-tenth of one second left, you are giving
us one more play, whether you feel we deserve it
or not. I mean, like every game now, the clock's
going to hit zero, but it will go back to
one second. Just to have one final play, unless it's
a kneel down.
Speaker 3 (17:57):
Just on principle.
Speaker 1 (17:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (17:58):
Like, everybody, it's an and one.
Speaker 1 (18:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (18:01):
You don't even have to make it.
Speaker 1 (18:03):
And one. What do you mean?
Speaker 3 (18:04):
It's like, ah, there's got to be a point something. Like,
but do we legitimately have a change in the clock now?
Speaker 1 (18:10):
Because, like, we had the big statement by the Big
Ten late on Saturday night. You know, I was doing
the overnight and, you know, read that aloud with, you know,
the best– Oration, like I was in the public square,
saying that 85 minutes before the game, we sync all
these things up and they.
Speaker 3 (18:28):
Make sure they're tried and true.
Speaker 4 (18:29):
Nobody say anything about a secret clock that has a
tenth of a second on it.
Speaker 1 (18:33):
It's a secret clock. Shh. Don't tell anyone.
Speaker 3 (18:36):
Not a secret anymore.
Speaker 1 (18:37):
But we have a secret.
Speaker 2 (18:38):
Shh.
Speaker 1 (18:39):
We have a secret clock here. Shh, don't tell. This
is really the one that you should pay attention to.
Speaker 4 (18:46):
That's like, remember the episode of The Simpsons when he
gets into the stonecutters? It's like, don't call 911.
Speaker 3 (18:54):
This is the real number. And they show him it's
9-1-2 and he goes, oh.
Speaker 4 (18:58):
Like, that's exactly what this was.
Speaker 2 (19:02):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (19:03):
They've come a long way from lost baby hotline. Please
hold baby.
Speaker 2 (19:06):
Come back.
Speaker 1 (19:06):
No, they've come a long way from that. But like
what's lost in it is as a couple of things,
because what the storyline was going to be up until
this final Hail Mary.
Speaker 4 (19:16):
Right.
Speaker 1 (19:17):
Like that's the best part is that this story is
going to go away pretty fast. It's going to burn hot.
But I can already tell the next couple of days
as we get into the NFL and a week to
a college football, it's going to regress. It's going to
ebb out. simply because this game doesn't have a big
impact on the season as a whole, right? Western Michigan's
not going to be in the playoff. It would have
been great for them. Michigan, if they win the rest
(19:38):
of their games to go to the playoff, oh, we
can say, well, had they lost that game, they might.
But if they're going on and beating Ohio State and
beating Oklahoma, okay, no one's going to care. And if
they lose, it's not going to matter anyways. this game
had very little impact on the season as a whole
right so so this game's going to get to go
away but the thing is is and look I know
there was a lot of attention spent on Clemson this
(20:01):
weekend and how bad they are losing to LSU and
is this the end for Dabo Sweeney and look It's
felt like it's nearing the end for Dabo. I want
to try to do it my way and do it
in the most altruistic way you can do things in
college football, which is not at all. But I want
to do it better than Lane Kiffin. Yeah, OK. It
looks like he's been been dragged into this era of
(20:22):
college football in which he is ill prepared to compete.
We see this. This is why we saw a lot
of coaches resigning the last few years. Hey, this new
era with the NIL and the players and the emphasis
on recruiting, it's not for me, so I'm getting out.
It's for the younger coaches that can recruit and have
the energy to do this and for the energy for
the new era of college football. Dabo Sweeney is someone
(20:42):
who made it big in the old era. I wouldn't
be surprised if he retires at the end of the year,
but he's owed a lot of money by Clemson. They'll
figure out a buyout for him to retire. It's ending
for him. But, wow. they may look like a national
title contender compared to Michigan because Michigan looked awful for
(21:03):
four quarters against Western Michigan. This is your home opener
with a new head coach. I get there's a lot
of new moving parts. You should still have won this
game if you were any good by at least a
couple of touchdowns. And we can say, oh, Michigan, oh,
this game was only 27-10 or it was 21-3. Okay,
maybe Whittingham has some things to worry about. They were
(21:26):
beaten up and down the field by a Mac team. Again,
I say outside of the state of Michigan and Michigan
alums across the country, I'm the only one that watched
the entire game. I've watched every Michigan game for the
past 35 years. Michigan looked terrible. Their defense was okay.
Did they ask them to do a lot? Yeah, but
(21:47):
by and large, you can't let Western Michigan go on
a 10-minute drive to take 10 minutes off the clock
into a field goal in the second half. That's embarrassing.
offensively michigan who do they have problems i don't know
that on either side of the ball michigan has the
playmakers it's necessary this may be an all-time battle this
could be like a five and seven kind of year
(22:08):
for michigan like that's the kind of year this could
be because They get thrust into all this controversy at
the end of the season. They wind up with a
head coach that, in a million years, they wouldn't hire
a guy who was thinking about retiring who just did
20 years at Utah. You're the future of Michigan? It's
so odd to see Kyle Winningham running the team and
(22:28):
on the sideline because you go, he's not a Michigan man.
He's not somebody that should be taking this job. You
have a guy that did it great in another school
for so long, and this is the guy coaching Michigan?
It just looked odd. And the team... Didn't look like
they were that talented. I mean, I mean, they did
a lot outside of look, you, you have a tight
end that looks like he could be a next great
(22:49):
tight end in the Colston Loveland mold caught the caught
the Hail Mary.
Speaker 3 (22:52):
Awesome.
Speaker 1 (22:52):
But overall, you got problems. You got problems defensively. You
have huge problems at quarterback because Bryce Underwood is not good. He's,
he's the same guy he was last year. And I
love everybody that after the first drive of the game, oh,
he's a different guy than a year ago. Look how
good Bryce Underwood is. Oh, he wasn't making throws like this.
Look at his footwork. His footwork is fantastic. Then you
watch the rest of the game, and what do the
(23:13):
analysts say? Well, his footwork is really bad in this
dump off. Boy, his footwork's not great in this throw. Like,
just the fact that in the end of the first half,
when Michigan has the football, and he's struggling, right, because
Michigan scored a touchdown the first time they had the ball,
didn't do anything. They have the ball with 15 seconds
left at their own 20-yard line, and they start throwing
(23:34):
the football, and they throw a short pass. And you go,
why the hell are you throwing a short pass here?
They're trying to get Bryce Underwood some sort of good
feeling and good vibes going into halftime because there were none.
This is where Western Michigan will give you any completion
you want of 10 or 15 yards because there's 15
seconds left. They'll give you anything you want for 20 yards.
(23:54):
And still he threw a pick and still he decided
I see the receiver and I'm locking on and I
threw a pick that allowed them to kick a field
goal before halftime. Like that's the biggest red flag you
could possibly see for Bryce Underwood was like he could
throw anywhere for the easiest 10 to 15 yard completion
in the world. And he throws a pick. That's 100%
on him. He's the same guy. He's not good. There's
(24:17):
going to be a change of quarterback. If he starts
out bad against Oklahoma, they will decide, you know what?
We're punting on this game. We're building for the rest
of the season. You'll see Tommy Carr, Lloyd Carr's grandson,
come in, and then it's going to be him the
rest of the way or somebody else, but he is
not the guy. Again, when you have a whole season,
then a new offseason, and this is the first game
(24:37):
you have against Western Michigan, like, okay, he's a guy
that looks the part, doesn't look like he can get
it done. And he's, he's on a, he's got a
real short amount of time to make it look good,
or he's going to lose his job. And then we're
going to say, wow, Michigan's where they were right after
JJ McCarthy left for the NFL. How do they not
have another quarterback ready? We get that you thought you
had one of Bryce Underwood, but wow, he stinks. How
(24:58):
good is Tommy Carr? How good are these other guys? Like, okay,
we're going to find it out really soon. But the
bottom line is all that, like maybe the quarterback makes
it look better, but Michigan, this could be a really
bad season for Michigan. And I know that we're thinking, oh,
they could get this weekend and they'll get it right.
They could lose this weekend by four touchdowns against Oklahoma.
That's how this weekend could go. It doesn't automatically have
(25:20):
to get better because Michigan has been great the last
few years. This doesn't have to happen, and Oklahoma could
just roll right over them.
Speaker 4 (25:27):
Oklahoma, five and a half point favorites, 43 and a
half year total as we come in. Underwood had 95
passing yards until the final two completions to Buchanan on
that game-winning drive.
Speaker 3 (25:40):
That's it. That's it.
Speaker 4 (25:42):
A 28-yarder and then a 47-yarder that padded his stats
up to 170.
Speaker 1 (25:46):
12 of 22. 170 on the day.
Speaker 4 (25:46):
And you start getting into excuse making and looking around going,
was it all a look ahead because they were a
four touchdown favorite, right? Was it too much thinking about
and time spent on what they're going to try to
do with Oklahoma? One of the other power houses of
(26:11):
coming into this year that may, maybe there there's a
little bit of that, but on a grand scale, it's
like you're supposed to be that much better.
Speaker 3 (26:19):
Again, What was it?
Speaker 1 (26:21):
Twenty nine and a half, I think, was the point
spread to get it, get the specificity to it.
Speaker 4 (26:26):
Succeed and proceed to a point. But when your coach
gets to the podium and he's not given a ringing
endorsement to his starting quarterback after week one, you know,
things could potentially get off the rails real fast. And
this Oklahoma team could blow the doors off him. The
fact that it's within a touchdown is shocking to me.
Speaker 2 (26:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (26:46):
When you when you when you hear he's our quarterback
this week. Whoa. OK, now now when you say something
like that, you know, you're just waiting to turn the
page like you are waiting to turn the page on
Bryce Underwood. And he's got maybe what do you think
he has the first quarter against Oklahoma? If he doesn't
move the football, he's going to be he's going to
be benched like that's going to be it. This is
like this is eleven million dollars Michigan spent on a quarterback.
(27:09):
You're going, wow. That's really sinking us right now, man.
Speaker 4 (27:12):
We'll see what their defense is able to do because,
you know, on the other side, you've certainly got some
high-touted players there for Oklahoma. But, yeah, I mean, by halftime,
he could be going into the tunnel having to do
the halftime interview shell-shocked because he's getting blown out and
looking around going, Hal!
Speaker 1 (27:34):
Hal! Hal! Exit out about a fresca. Exit Swollen Dome,
the Jason Smith show. Just real quick, Harmon. Yes or no?
Give me your gut on this, right? Even though he
was cut today, longest tenured giant, Steve DeSegar told us
about it. By the middle of the season, during bye
weeks you will be starting darius slayton at wide receiver somewhere.
Speaker 4 (27:57):
Oh somewhere yeah somewhere it'll become wr two and a
half for somebody he's a veteran that'll come in and
run routes for you yes yes.
Speaker 1 (28:07):
He'll be back with the giants and he'll be back
all right he'll.
Speaker 4 (28:10):
Be catching passing from cj stroud they got no wide receivers.
Speaker 1 (28:17):
Very nice.
Speaker 3 (28:18):
Very right. I mean, I look at it. You know,
it was funny before the show, though.
Speaker 4 (28:23):
Brandon brought it brought up a trivia question to me
that relates back to these giants. So, Brandon, ask Jason
Smith this question.
Speaker 3 (28:32):
All right, Jason.
Speaker 1 (28:33):
Go ahead.
Speaker 3 (28:33):
OK.
Speaker 1 (28:34):
Yeah. Who has the most Instagram followers of any NFL
player active? Of any NFL, any active NFL player.
Speaker 2 (28:45):
Be sure to catch live editions of the Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at 10 p.m. Eastern, 7 p.m.
Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (28:57):
Who would have the most? Oh, Travis Kelsey.
Speaker 3 (29:01):
That's what I thought. But not quite. He's second.
Speaker 1 (29:03):
It's not Travis Kelsey.
Speaker 3 (29:04):
And by a wide margin, he is second, too.
Speaker 1 (29:07):
Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Hang on,
hang on. He is second?
Speaker 4 (29:11):
By a wide margin. And I mean a wide, like
over double. Like take Kelsey's, double it, and then keep adding.
Speaker 1 (29:20):
You are kidding. I'm not.
Speaker 3 (29:21):
Odell Beckham Jr.
Speaker 1 (29:25):
Wow. Really?
Speaker 3 (29:26):
How about that?
Speaker 1 (29:27):
How many Instagram followers does he have? 17 million. Oh
my goodness.
Speaker 3 (29:31):
To Kelsey's nearly eight.
Speaker 1 (29:34):
Wow. I had no idea. I had no idea. I
would have said for sure Travis Kelsey. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (29:38):
I started thinking like, okay. scat of a, or like
one of these young guys, maybe. Oh yeah.
Speaker 1 (29:43):
Yeah. I thought I would have put all my money
on Kelsey.
Speaker 4 (29:46):
Well, I just figured the Kelsey, you know, it was
a joint account with his brother. So perhaps we, he
wouldn't count, but either way. I mean, that that's insane.
Speaker 1 (29:53):
Right.
Speaker 4 (29:54):
So odell beckham jr i mean that that means more
more reps for him means neighbors healthy if you're gonna
cut slayton.
Speaker 1 (30:01):
That makes it harder for slayton to come back but
i just gotta wait in the middle of the season
we'll be back we started various light yeah wow that's
a great question i love brandon that's a great trivia
question Very nice.
Speaker 4 (30:11):
Yeah. Something I would have never really thought about it.
Cause that's what I said to him. I go, why,
why am I caring? Go ahead.
Speaker 3 (30:17):
Explain.
Speaker 1 (30:18):
Not at all. Like people really care about Odell Beckham jr.
That much like is 70.7 million. Is he just buying bots?
Speaker 4 (30:26):
Or he really exploded about the time Instagram took off,
I guess.
Speaker 3 (30:32):
If we go back in the way back.
Speaker 1 (30:34):
Machine, I don't know, man. I mean, okay.
Speaker 3 (30:36):
Maybe you bought some bots.
Speaker 1 (30:38):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (30:38):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (30:39):
All right. Just keep going. Either way.
Speaker 3 (30:42):
He's, he's your champion right now of active players, man.
Speaker 1 (30:45):
Okay.
Speaker 4 (30:45):
He's more active than a lot of the guys that
Alex and Brandon drafted a little earlier tonight.
Speaker 1 (30:52):
You know, I wonder if there's a, there's a league
where you have to draft like, like an Instagram, um,
or social media fantasy league where you can only draft
players that were either over 5 million followers on Instagram, or,
you know, it's gotta be less than a million or
someone who's not on Instagram. Like, or if there's an
Instagram fantasy league where stuff like that happens.
Speaker 3 (31:15):
I think we need to figure that out. If it
doesn't exist.
Speaker 4 (31:18):
Right.
Speaker 1 (31:18):
No, like here's like, you can only draft a player
if they only have like under a million followers on Instagram.
Speaker 4 (31:25):
Right.
Speaker 1 (31:25):
And then, Oh, think about this. But then when the
season goes, because if they get better, they'll get more
followers and they get over a million. You have to
cut them.
Speaker 3 (31:33):
Ooh, I like that.
Speaker 1 (31:35):
Oh, patent pending. All of a sudden you get an
alert saying your player has become too popular. Yes. Congratulations. Congratulations.
Speaker 2 (31:42):
Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (31:44):
Congratulations on Garrett Wilson's second three touchdown game of the year. Unfortunately,
he now has over a million followers on Instagram and
he has to be waived. Your roster is locked until
you make that decision.
Speaker 3 (31:55):
And then you have to come on air and call
him a sellout for going.
Speaker 1 (31:58):
Over a million. Oh, I think that should be a league.
You know what? You're the fantasy guy. Look that up.
See if we can do that. Well, it's going to
take some work and some back-end work, but I think
the AI models could help me a little bit. Hey,
all you have to do is not look at rookie
basketball cards for a day, and you could figure that out.
Speaker 2 (32:18):
No, no, no.
Speaker 1 (32:18):
You have free time to do that. No, no, no.
Basketball cards, football season. It's time to find some value
in the college and the football market. Every time, hey,
did you see that Jose Alvarado? You want to buy
some Jose Alvarado rookies? Like, whatever I bring up in basketball,
you got rookies for.
Speaker 4 (32:31):
Well, I don't necessarily have them, but I can become
your guy to go get you those cards. I actually
offered that service to a couple of players earlier on,
and they're like, no, I've already got my cousin on it,
or I've already got my brother, or some family member
was already going to card shops to do it for them.
I realize, though, with family, you're going to pay more
(32:52):
as opposed to me. I don't look like I can
play or whatever. I'm a short fire plug of a man,
but that's okay.
Speaker 1 (33:01):
Jason Smith, Mike Harmon, live from the Fox Sports Radio Studios.
Coming up next, is it only a matter of time
before one high-profile college football head coach has to step
down this year? And no, we're not talking about Dabo Sweeney.
That's next. Jason and Mike, Fox.
