We'll do revisit that a little bit later on as
the hour goes forward. But you know, we talked a

lot about the running back contracts that are out there,
but the still swirling winds in Tampa Bay where you've
got some disgruntled veterans, and whenever your quarterback's unhappy, it
leads to one of two things.

Either they're gonna.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
Ball out then play play one of the greatest seasons
ever or it well it tanks everything around them. And
then obviously vide vea one of the great defenders. Defensive
lineman one of the things I always celebrate. I'm still
working on my wall of mean Anthony. Eventually I want
a full wall of jerseys of all the greats that

love the defensive interior uh, and I want the event warned, photoshoot,
worn overalls that Vince will Fork had what he went
to Houston, But all of that thea one of those guys,
and you had light meet with the media today saying well,
we're making progress here. A lot of reports out there
(02:53):
that he'd love to come play on the West Coast,
so keeping an eye on that.

But the other is that of Baker Mayfield, right.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
And the we have all these quarterback rankings, we look
at where he is salary wise, right in the meaty
part of the curve, not setting things, not falling behind,
but ranking sixteenth in terms of his annual value for
this season and looking to get paid reportedly turning down
two years one hundred million dollars now fuzzy math and

all of that in terms of guarantees and everything, but
we know that the trend has been more so that
you're taking home a lot of that cash as opposed
to years pass. But one thing that we've broached on
the show. I think it's been swirled about, but certainly
didn't expect your GM to go to the podium and
throw it out is well, you've always got the nuclear

option if things really stay at an impass when it
comes to the Buccaneers.
Speaker 4 (03:52):
Yeah, you know, I don't know how I think this
thing ends ugly You could say it, I mean you could.
And first of all, thevea why the Buccaneers were so
good against the run for the last five years was
because of him. When he went out that all of
a sudden, that d line became poorus. There's no one better.

You're gonna have your wall, and he belongs to perfect
square in it because he clogs up that middle. He
allows your linebackers to run free, to make tackles. He's
so valuable. That's why an interior was so good against
the run. And as far as Baker's concerned, I mean, look,
I mean you gotta pay him. He's right, you got it,

you got where else are you going to go?

I think it comes down to this. So let's let's
hear from the GM as to where they can take this.

I'm not gonna get in specifics about the.

Contract and all that stuff, but yeah, we do think
he is and.

Uh we we love Baker. Our feelings for Baker haven't changed.

Just like Joe Flacco, he could be elite. But the
idea being that the franchise tag is always out there
as the nuclear option, and I'm just wondered in terms
of their roster construction, right, Mike Evans gone, they at
least for the moment, either wanting himself a giant pay
bump or a trade or a combination of the two.
(05:20):
It's like, you can buy me off and I'll be
happy to stick around. But wondering if with this coaching
staff and everything, Anthony, if they're not at a point
of all right, we might win the division, but how
great are we you play with a chip on your shoulder.
Maybe we get a little bit more a Bukah and
company in the receiving core. But you also have a

draft going for not that you're necessarily going to be
at the top to draft one of the heavyweights, but
it is at least on paper, as we discussed a
little bit last hour, a deep class, and wondering if
you're not looking to reset right, because if they don't
have a big run, the coach is going to be
their next.

Here see here, here's the thing though with them. Their
offensive line is terrible. Yeah, I mean that's what you
gotta fix. Like you got skilled guys, you got a quarterback,
you got to fix your old line.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
Well your help by the fact that it doesn't look
like the Falcons are going to have any pass rushers
before we get to opening down.
Speaker 4 (06:20):
No, I mean it was main, wasn't it.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
Well, I mean one guy's thanks, buddy. I mean, I'll
get after it. I'm a short fire plug of a man.
Once upon a time I head coaches telling me you
don't need to grow too tall. We we'll just you know,
make you wider. Like, well, that's good. I really, I
really don't think that's gonna work out really well for me.
So I declined, decline, and I moved on with my life.

But you know, when we look at where they're at
for their depth chart, you've got McMillan solid number two,
Tes Johnson's there, Godwin's still around still, guys. Kate Otton
is better than I think advertised. Bucky Irving had a
hell of a game and they are a hell of
a season. They brought in kind of gain Well behind him.
Speaker 4 (07:09):
The Bucky thing's weird. He's you know, had some kind
of off the field stuff a little bit. Yeah, you know,
I mean he's got like two years ago, I thought
he was going to be a star. Because he catch
the ball out of the back can run Like I'm thinking,
my man is a ball. And I still think he's

gotta get his I think he's gotta get his head
on right and Gagwell is going to help them Gainwell
is very good. He so what he did in Pittsburgh
last year, catch the ball out of the backfield will
get your tough yards.

Will he will his skills translate outside of the state
of Pennsylvania though.
Speaker 4 (07:49):
He was hanging I'm shocked. I'm like, I'm not shocked,
because you know your stuff. He was much better with
the Steelers than he was the Eagles, So you know, yeah,
I like but I've always I like him. I think
he's I think he's took his game to the next
level with the Steelers and he's real dependable out of

the backfield. I like their skill people. Again, if they
had an offensive line, they got no old line and
no secondary. That's the buccaneers the biggest problem.

Well, that's why you need to give Vita Vea whatever
he wants to stay to keep your your corners less
than exposed.
Speaker 4 (08:29):
Let's put it that way.

Yes, a little bit of support there, but yeah, it's
just that curiosity of when you turn the page, because
you got a guy who's throwing ninety five touchdowns in
three years there, right, you look at all the metrics
and like, all right, he stands here here here statistically
and look they whatever you have from the years at

the end with the Browns or whatever happened there his
cup of coffee here in La he found his found
his legs. Been a really good and efficient quarterback.

I like Baker, I gotta tell you, But.

Is he a fifty million dollars a year guy? I
guess is where you're like, you're.

A franchise quarterback, you're starting, you're starting quarterback. Yeah, that's
the rate unless you're going to go being quarterback in
the quarterback wilderness. Ask the Browns how that worked.

Well, they're still there, but they're paying that guy elite money,
I know, and Jimmy has them.

One of the great sound bites coming out of training
camp is when he had to be asked about trading
Miles Garrett and Giannis and Tenna Coupon. You know who
asked him that question, this ninety five year old man.
He said, what the hell are you doing? It wasn't

And that was his first question.

he's just behind Sam Darnold in terms of salary for
the season. Sam at thirty three five, Baker at thirty
three three three three three. And then you got a

ten million dollar gap before you get to Rogers and Willis.
If you get him up in that fifty million dollar territory,
that gets him to where Jalen Hurts is Lamar Jackson
justin Herbert and Company. And look, I'm always a believer.
If I've got a guy at that position, I'm running
him until it's done right. Because you cite Cleveland, go

back to the Jets, go back to my bears that
we talked about earlier in the show.

Life is really miserable if.

You don't have a guy that it sucks if your
team has no QB. It's terrible, terrible. Yeah, you how

I like that again is Baker? Do I feel the

obviously I like Herbert better. I like Dak better. I'll

Like, you know, there's guys you could sit back and
you know we all know the names. So where's Baker sloting?
You know he's in there. He's in that tier after
you got your top tier and then your second tier,

at the top of that second tier. So Baker's like
the third tier, right end of the back end of
the second tier that you.

with Colin Cowhard and my usual colleague here, Jason Smith,
many backs back and forth. I mean, we could probably
set it to music and do dramatic reads off some.

But you look at and Baker's a guy that I've
rooted for. Look any guy that gets exiled to Cleveland.
And yes, he had some of his own missteps along
the way, but maturity, I don't know. If I'm the
number what was he? He was number one? Right, So
you're going number one overall. Suddenly you've had your college run.

But now there's a whole other world of the economics
of it all, and you're one of the faces coming
into the league.

I don't think at twenty one, twenty two, I'm handling.

That so well. No, I'm thirty years senior at this
point and a miserable slug with a lot of it right.

Like, like listen, he handled it miserably and he was
not good at it. The kid can the guy competes?

I can't wait to over ray of things we do
with quarterbacks. Is you know, uh, they can't win a
Super Bowl? Well yeah, you know if you put certain

guys around you, you build a lineup, you know, can
he make throws? He can make throws. He's again, he's
he's fiery like you've seen him when you protect him.
You see, he could be effective. Yeah.

great quarterbacks who never won a damn thing in this league.

in that. All week long, I was talking about how
I'm excited to watch the game and I get the
faces and the Scots and all my people that we
do the show, and they're all like, ah wy, they're
all the thing panthers Arizona. So I can't wait to

come in tomorrow and go. That was an entertaining game
that we got to see, you know, Beck, we got
to see Haines King and we saw just a good
football it was. It was actually well played. And you
know what I appreciated from both of those good coaches,

young coaches, is that they ran. They played football. They
didn't just you know here it is. You're gonna run
a half back, dive're.

Gonna grind a minute of the clock out, all right,
You're gonna be slow to get up so you can
buy an extra fifteen seconds here.

They played with pace, physicality, and that's always one of
the big question marks. We were talking about a little
bit earlier in the show, the Once upon a Time
two a days and one hundred degree heat. I remember
doing the training camp circuit and what you'd have by.
Speaker 4 (19:19):
The Cheese League. Cheese League, So Wisconsin used to have
six seven NFL teams and train in Wisconsin.
Speaker 5 (19:34):
Well, because you had the Vikings were there.
Speaker 4 (19:38):
You yeah, yeah, I'll tell you exactly what bears were
in Platteville.
Speaker 5 (19:42):
Platteville, of course, sure right.
Speaker 4 (19:44):
The Chiefs were river falls there you go.
Speaker 5 (19:47):
That was the one I was missing.

Lacrosse Green Bay, Minnesota, and there was one other team
and I used to I used to cover every and
go and go camp to camp to camp. And uh,
I still to this day love training camp. I would
go back. I wish I could go back to going

to every camp. I'd love that it was. You know,
it's guys are are much more relaxed. The coaches are
more relaxed, looking to get business done and work done. Sure,
but they're more relaxed, and you know, you get you get.
It's just great conversation about football.

According to the the great work of my crack research staff.
That means my clickity click click clacking on it my
own keyboard.

The Jaguars were part of that for a year. There
you go, work by you. I gotta going.

But yeah, I used to do the tour when I
lived in Upstate New York for about five years. I'd
do a thing for Fox Sports dot Com where I'd
go around to the camps. They'd usually be pretty good
about getting you some players, some better than other. I
remember when I went to Cincinnati one year. It was
funny as hell. And you know, it's j Huschman Zana,
that's Ocho Cinco and those squads, and HED be like,
(21:04):
do you want to talk to Carson? I'm like, nah,
Carson's gonna give me quarterback talk. I don't need him.
It's like, give me give me your most vocal. Well no,
because you're looking for something salacious, right, No, But but no,
they but they were gonna give me. They were gonna
rank them, right. So I'm like, yeah, Carson's on the list,
but he's not first or second because he's not gay anything.
Speaker 4 (21:26):
The quarterback. No, quarterback's always gotta be one.
Speaker 5 (21:30):
Yeah, but they're not gonna give me anything.
Speaker 3 (21:31):
So I like, I'm gonna get more from either TJ,
who now is part of our our family here at
five yes, or certainly Chad Johnson even before he became
Ojo Sinko. You're right, I was gonna get more from
the two of those guys going into it because this
is before video clips too, right, So I'm not getting
an on air you know five minute Well, I mean
that would have more run with Carson that way, but

it was you know, who am I gonna get a
good quote out of?

And so I go to somebody like that. So some
of these camps I'd go to and they'd be like,
you don't want to talk to that gay.
Speaker 3 (22:02):
I'm like, nah, It's like, well why and i'd give
that explanation. They go, I can't fault the logic, you know,
and you'd go around and they were all really good.
And because Mike Tomlin was part of the Hall of
Fame Game Work Tonight as part of the NBC Peacock World,
that it was funny when you go to Steeler camp
(22:24):
that there was just always that next level of physicality
guys getting into it. I mean, we've seen it with
people just in the autograph seeking lines this year, which
is a whole other mess. Uh, But you'd have the
two days and you'd see people start sliding down to
the backfields. And my guys Touch and Wolf both gone
(22:47):
way too soon from this world, but they were my
early entry to this media space and they were so
kind and you know, introducing me to Tomlin and all
the players and getting me around. It's like, no, no,
we're gonna go watch backs on back come on, yeah,
get back here, and you're on the backfield, and you know,
Mike Tomlin there were always these quotes he'd throw at
guys if they were getting beat with some regularity, and
(23:09):
he'd look at me and goes, that will not show
up in print tomorrow. Yeah, And he'd be staring directly
at me.
Speaker 5 (23:17):
No, sir, not tomorrow from you. I'm like, okay. But
then they set you up.
Speaker 3 (23:22):
They had a dorm that you could stay in if
you were going to stay multiple days. Yea caf cafeteria
at the troll with the kids, uh, with with all
the players and their kids and whatever else.
Speaker 4 (23:33):
Codgers squad. I come back way back in the day.
I was at Platteville in the dorms because I was
living in Chicago and I was caught. I did Bears
camp and in fact, uh remember playing basketball every night.
Mike Greenberg was was there from now ESPN, and Mike
(23:54):
was was thin.
Speaker 5 (23:56):
It's his birthday today, so happy birthday.
Speaker 4 (23:57):
But all right, well green he was still with Chicago
and I was a writer.

What he was back on CLTV and newspaper.

That was us and then we played basketball at the
end of the night. But Jim Harball was the quarterback.

That captain comeback all those years ago.

Yeah, young and spry, but still approaching every day with
a what is it, a relentless whatever it is, an
enthusiasm unknown to man.

That's pretty much where you get to with all of it.

Likewise, hey, you got that, and you know the boiler Makers, right,
Drew Brees going into the Hall of Fame.

Dude, we should talk about it. He deserves the respect.

H o f okay, so let's talk about Drew Brees.
Former San Diego Charger Drew Brees supplanted by Philip Rivers,
and we talked about it a little bit, right, the
idea of hey, he's gonna end up on Miami Dolphin
until he didn't. And NFL history is rewritten, right, change
the game, change the approach to how you move the ball.

Like the guy you know the old electric football game,
Anthony roll you out there. If you know this, you're
of a certain age, right, you'd line these It would
take you like twenty five minutes to line up the
guys for one.

Play and then some of them.

Yes, yes, I'm I'm gonna send you one for Christmas. Uh,
and we're gonna revisit it. But it's the idea that
you know, for those that didn't see this, uh and
don't know the game, but you got line up your
eleven on eleven and then you'd hit the the button
and they'd start running into each other, some would run
in circles whatever. But your quarterback, you gave him a

And then they had the thing where you had to
spring back his arm. That's the throwing angle that Drew
Brees operated from for his entire NFL career. Yeah, a
man of a smaller stature, Right, we were talking about
Jalen Hurts a little bit earlier, step drop always yeah,
getting he's got to have a sight line. Yeah, so
he like, should he have more yardage added? Eight seven

seven ninety nine, because if we're going to talk about
where he threw it from versus the line of scrimmage,
there should be an awful lot more yards on Drew Breese's.

Arm, even though they went fifteen yards.

Right, even though his arm fell off down the stretch.
I mean, one of the great careers. I mean I
enjoyed watching the hell lot of him with Joe Tiller
at Purdue. I referenced it a little earlier in the show,
just a different approach. Got to talk to him about
that when he was coming into the league, going to
all those you know, rookie symposiums, and you know, the
trading card stuff premieres and and in the years thereafter,
(26:49):
just a little bit of back and forth on on
that offense and really revolutionizing a conference, but a different approach,
particularly with how they scheme up that offense. And look,
I'm not the biggest of Sean Payton guy in the world,
and that's well chronicled on the show. I respect the history,
(27:09):
uh and what they achieved there, but that offense that
he and Breeze operated and executed is a thing of
beauty and one of those things that as he goes
into the Hall of Fame. Uh, you see how much
it changed NFL offenses.

Yeah, yeah, I kind of share your opinion.
Speaker 3 (27:28):
Well, yeah, man, you look I like me some me, right,
I don't walk around telling you that you need to
like some of me.

Not the smartest man alive, but it's that kind of
thing you get.

So that whole Listen, he's a great coach, he is.
I'll how he handled the bounty gate.

Yeah, that's kind of get swept under the rug. Right,
Everybody goes after Belichick for things in the past.

It's like, ah, what are you gonna do?

And then the year that he's away, he comes back,
and I don't really appreciate what he did to his coach.
Is there one of those coaches is the best defensive
coordinator in the NFL, Steve Spagnolo. Yeah, and yea, Spag's
got a little scapegoat in that in that situation, I
didn't appreciate that.

A lot of years of mediocrity mixed there in a
as well. But you know, changing the face of the game.
I'll give credit where credit is due. But you know,
we we pick and choose based on media friendliness, which
guys we like, which is why it's still kind of
interesting to watch how often Belichick and his North Carolina
forget about the Lombardi thing for a second. You want

to talk about a guy who everybody just hit co
sign on a lot of things, which is really odd
as he had to step away this last week from
his duties at North Carolina. But for Belichick, you know,
kinder Cudley or whatever right now, but still everybody has

the hour goes forward. But you know, we talked a

lot about the running back contracts that are out there,
but the still swirling winds in Tampa Bay where you've
got some disgruntled veterans, and whenever your quarterback's unhappy, it
leads to one of two things.

Either they're gonna.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
Ball out then play play one of the greatest seasons
ever or it well it tanks everything around them. And
then obviously vide vea one of the great defenders. Defensive
lineman one of the things I always celebrate. I'm still
working on my wall of mean Anthony. Eventually I want
a full wall of jerseys of all the greats that
(02:29):
love the defensive interior uh, and I want the event warned, photoshoot,
worn overalls that Vince will Fork had what he went
to Houston, But all of that thea one of those guys,
and you had light meet with the media today saying well,
we're making progress here. A lot of reports out there
(02:53):
that he'd love to come play on the West Coast,
so keeping an eye on that.
Speaker 5 (02:57):
But the other is that of Baker Mayfield, right.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
And the we have all these quarterback rankings, we look
at where he is salary wise, right in the meaty
part of the curve, not setting things, not falling behind,
but ranking sixteenth in terms of his annual value for
this season and looking to get paid reportedly turning down
two years one hundred million dollars now fuzzy math and
(03:23):
all of that in terms of guarantees and everything, but
we know that the trend has been more so that
you're taking home a lot of that cash as opposed
to years pass. But one thing that we've broached on
the show. I think it's been swirled about, but certainly
didn't expect your GM to go to the podium and
throw it out is well, you've always got the nuclear
(03:46):
option if things really stay at an impass when it
comes to the Buccaneers.
Speaker 4 (03:52):
Yeah, you know, I don't know how I think this
thing ends ugly You could say it, I mean you could.
And first of all, thevea why the Buccaneers were so
good against the run for the last five years was
because of him. When he went out that all of
a sudden, that d line became poorus. There's no one better.
(04:15):
You're gonna have your wall, and he belongs to perfect
square in it because he clogs up that middle. He
allows your linebackers to run free, to make tackles. He's
so valuable. That's why an interior was so good against
the run. And as far as Baker's concerned, I mean, look,
I mean you gotta pay him. He's right, you got it,
(04:40):
you got where else are you going to go?
Speaker 3 (04:44):
I think it comes down to this. So let's let's
hear from the GM as to where they can take this.
Speaker 6 (04:50):

Speaker 4 (04:50):
I'm not gonna get in specifics about the.

Contract and all that stuff, but yeah, we do think
he is and.
Speaker 4 (04:56):
Uh we we love Baker. Our feelings for Baker haven't changed.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
Just like Joe Flacco, he could be elite. But the
idea being that the franchise tag is always out there
as the nuclear option, and I'm just wondered in terms
of their roster construction, right, Mike Evans gone, they at
least for the moment, either wanting himself a giant pay
bump or a trade or a combination of the two.
(05:20):
It's like, you can buy me off and I'll be
happy to stick around. But wondering if with this coaching
staff and everything, Anthony, if they're not at a point
of all right, we might win the division, but how
great are we you play with a chip on your shoulder.
Maybe we get a little bit more a Bukah and
company in the receiving core. But you also have a
(05:42):
draft going for not that you're necessarily going to be
at the top to draft one of the heavyweights, but
it is at least on paper, as we discussed a
little bit last hour, a deep class, and wondering if
you're not looking to reset right, because if they don't
have a big run, the coach is going to be
their next.
Speaker 4 (06:00):
Here see here, here's the thing though with them. Their
offensive line is terrible. Yeah, I mean that's what you
gotta fix. Like you got skilled guys, you got a quarterback,
you got to fix your old line.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
Well your help by the fact that it doesn't look
like the Falcons are going to have any pass rushers
before we get to opening down.
Speaker 4 (06:20):
No, I mean it was main, wasn't it.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
Well, I mean one guy's thanks, buddy. I mean, I'll
get after it. I'm a short fire plug of a man.
Once upon a time I head coaches telling me you
don't need to grow too tall. We we'll just you know,
make you wider. Like, well, that's good. I really, I
really don't think that's gonna work out really well for me.
So I declined, decline, and I moved on with my life.
(06:48):
But you know, when we look at where they're at
for their depth chart, you've got McMillan solid number two,
Tes Johnson's there, Godwin's still around still, guys. Kate Otton
is better than I think advertised. Bucky Irving had a
hell of a game and they are a hell of
a season. They brought in kind of gain Well behind him.
Speaker 4 (07:09):
The Bucky thing's weird. He's you know, had some kind
of off the field stuff a little bit. Yeah, you know,
I mean he's got like two years ago, I thought
he was going to be a star. Because he catch
the ball out of the back can run Like I'm thinking,
my man is a ball. And I still think he's
(07:31):
gotta get his I think he's gotta get his head
on right and Gagwell is going to help them Gainwell
is very good. He so what he did in Pittsburgh
last year, catch the ball out of the backfield will
get your tough yards.
Speaker 3 (07:43):
Will he will his skills translate outside of the state
of Pennsylvania though.
Speaker 4 (07:49):
He was hanging I'm shocked. I'm like, I'm not shocked,
because you know your stuff. He was much better with
the Steelers than he was the Eagles, So you know, yeah,
I like but I've always I like him. I think
he's I think he's took his game to the next
level with the Steelers and he's real dependable out of
(08:11):
the backfield. I like their skill people. Again, if they
had an offensive line, they got no old line and
no secondary. That's the buccaneers the biggest problem.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
Well, that's why you need to give Vita Vea whatever
he wants to stay to keep your your corners less
than exposed.
Speaker 4 (08:29):
Let's put it that way.
Speaker 3 (08:30):
Yes, a little bit of support there, but yeah, it's
just that curiosity of when you turn the page, because
you got a guy who's throwing ninety five touchdowns in
three years there, right, you look at all the metrics
and like, all right, he stands here here here statistically
and look they whatever you have from the years at

the end with the Browns or whatever happened there his
cup of coffee here in La he found his found
his legs. Been a really good and efficient quarterback.
Speaker 4 (09:03):
I like Baker, I gotta tell you, But.
Speaker 5 (09:05):
Is he a fifty million dollars a year guy? I
guess is where you're like, you're.
Speaker 4 (09:09):
A franchise quarterback, you're starting, you're starting quarterback. Yeah, that's
the rate unless you're going to go being quarterback in
the quarterback wilderness. Ask the Browns how that worked.
Speaker 3 (09:20):
Well, they're still there, but they're paying that guy elite money,
I know, and Jimmy has them.
Speaker 5 (09:26):

One of the great sound bites coming out of training
camp is when he had to be asked about trading
Miles Garrett and Giannis and Tenna Coupon. You know who
asked him that question, this ninety five year old man.
He said, what the hell are you doing? It wasn't
a Rapporter. He said, my old man was getting after me.

And that was his first question.

damn right. But it's funny, right Baker coming into this year,
he's just behind Sam Darnold in terms of salary for
the season. Sam at thirty three five, Baker at thirty
three three three three three. And then you got a

ten million dollar gap before you get to Rogers and Willis.
If you get him up in that fifty million dollar territory,
that gets him to where Jalen Hurts is Lamar Jackson
justin Herbert and Company. And look, I'm always a believer.
If I've got a guy at that position, I'm running
him until it's done right. Because you cite Cleveland, go

back to the Jets, go back to my bears that
we talked about earlier in the show.

Life is really miserable if.
Speaker 4 (10:58):
You don't have a guy that it sucks if your
team has no QB. It's terrible, terrible. Yeah, you how
to protect them. But again, I'm gonna go back to again.
I like that again is Baker? Do I feel the
same way about Baker that I do? Let's go Herbert. No,
obviously I like Herbert better. I like Dak better. I'll

Like, you know, there's guys you could sit back and
you know we all know the names. So where's Baker sloting?
You know he's in there. He's in that tier after
you got your top tier and then your second tier,

at the top of that second tier. So Baker's like
the third tier, right end of the back end of
the second tier that you.

Can you win a super Bowl with Baker Mayfield? I

Because he used to do nothing but verbally slap fight
with Colin Cowhard and my usual colleague here, Jason Smith,
many backs back and forth. I mean, we could probably
set it to music and do dramatic reads off some.

Of that back in the day.

But you look at and Baker's a guy that I've
rooted for. Look any guy that gets exiled to Cleveland.
And yes, he had some of his own missteps along
the way, but maturity, I don't know. If I'm the
number what was he? He was number one? Right, So
you're going number one overall. Suddenly you've had your college run.

But now there's a whole other world of the economics
of it all, and you're one of the faces coming
into the league.

I don't think at twenty one, twenty two, I'm handling.

That so well. No, I'm thirty years senior at this
point and a miserable slug with a lot of it right.

Like, like listen, he handled it miserably and he was
not good at it. The kid can the guy competes?

He can still call him a kid.

It's okay, he can he compete? I call everybody kid,
don't That's all right? You know, That's how it is
like Chicago. Yeah, that kid, that kid, That kid's seventy
five years old.

Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, but look how spry he is.

Yeah, but that's if you look at him. You know,
he can he throws the ice ball. He's gutsies all
get out, you know, I mean he could win. Yeah.
I can't wait to over ray of things we do
with quarterbacks. Is you know, uh, they can't win a
Super Bowl? Well yeah, you know if you put certain

guys around you, you build a lineup, you know, can
he make throws? He can make throws. He's again, he's
he's fiery like you've seen him when you protect him.
You see, he could be effective. Yeah.

But look, we can do the giant mural as well.

I can have my wall of mean on one side
and then put together a giant quilt of jerseys of
great quarterbacks who never won a damn thing in this league.

I'm excited to watch the game and I get the
faces and the Scots and all my people that we
do the show, and they're all like, ah wy, they're
all the thing panthers Arizona. So I can't wait to

come in tomorrow and go. That was an entertaining game
that we got to see, you know, Beck, we got
to see Haines King and we saw just a good
football it was. It was actually well played. And you
know what I appreciated from both of those good coaches,

young coaches, is that they ran. They played football. They
didn't just you know here it is. You're gonna run
a half back, dive're.

Gonna grind a minute of the clock out, all right,
You're gonna be slow to get up so you can
buy an extra fifteen seconds here.

They played with pace, physicality, and that's always one of
the big question marks. We were talking about a little
bit earlier in the show, the Once upon a Time
two a days and one hundred degree heat. I remember
doing the training camp circuit and what you'd have by.
Speaker 4 (19:19):
The Cheese League. Cheese League, So Wisconsin used to have
six seven NFL teams and train in Wisconsin.
Speaker 5 (19:34):
Well, because you had the Vikings were there.
Speaker 4 (19:38):
You yeah, yeah, I'll tell you exactly what bears were
in Platteville.
Speaker 5 (19:42):
Platteville, of course, sure right.
Speaker 4 (19:44):
The Chiefs were river falls there you go.
Speaker 5 (19:47):
That was the one I was missing.
Speaker 4 (19:49):
Lacrosse Green Bay, Minnesota, and there was one other team
and I used to I used to cover every and
go and go camp to camp to camp. And uh,
I still to this day love training camp. I would
go back. I wish I could go back to going

to every camp. I'd love that it was. You know,
it's guys are are much more relaxed. The coaches are
more relaxed, looking to get business done and work done. Sure,
but they're more relaxed, and you know, you get you get.
It's just great conversation about football.
Speaker 3 (20:28):
According to the the great work of my crack research staff.
That means my clickity click click clacking on it my
own keyboard.

Uh.

The Jaguars were part of that for a year. There
you go, work by you. I gotta going.

But yeah, I used to do the tour when I
lived in Upstate New York for about five years. I'd
do a thing for Fox Sports dot Com where I'd
go around to the camps. They'd usually be pretty good
about getting you some players, some better than other. I
remember when I went to Cincinnati one year. It was
funny as hell. And you know, it's j Huschman Zana,
that's Ocho Cinco and those squads, and HED be like,
(21:04):
do you want to talk to Carson? I'm like, nah,
Carson's gonna give me quarterback talk. I don't need him.
It's like, give me give me your most vocal. Well no,
because you're looking for something salacious, right, No, But but no,
they but they were gonna give me. They were gonna
rank them, right. So I'm like, yeah, Carson's on the list,
but he's not first or second because he's not gay anything.
Speaker 4 (21:26):
The quarterback. No, quarterback's always gotta be one.
Speaker 5 (21:30):
Yeah, but they're not gonna give me anything.
Speaker 3 (21:31):
So I like, I'm gonna get more from either TJ,
who now is part of our our family here at
five yes, or certainly Chad Johnson even before he became
Ojo Sinko. You're right, I was gonna get more from
the two of those guys going into it because this
is before video clips too, right, So I'm not getting
an on air you know five minute Well, I mean

it was you know, who am I gonna get a

And so I go to somebody like that. So some
of these camps I'd go to and they'd be like,
you don't want to talk to that gay.
Speaker 3 (22:02):
I'm like, nah, It's like, well why and i'd give
that explanation. They go, I can't fault the logic, you know,
and you'd go around and they were all really good.
And because Mike Tomlin was part of the Hall of
Fame Game Work Tonight as part of the NBC Peacock World,
that it was funny when you go to Steeler camp
(22:24):
that there was just always that next level of physicality
guys getting into it. I mean, we've seen it with
people just in the autograph seeking lines this year, which
is a whole other mess. Uh, But you'd have the
two days and you'd see people start sliding down to
the backfields. And my guys Touch and Wolf both gone
(22:47):
way too soon from this world, but they were my
early entry to this media space and they were so
kind and you know, introducing me to Tomlin and all
the players and getting me around. It's like, no, no,
we're gonna go watch backs on back come on, yeah,
get back here, and you're on the backfield, and you know,
Mike Tomlin there were always these quotes he'd throw at
guys if they were getting beat with some regularity, and
(23:09):
he'd look at me and goes, that will not show
up in print tomorrow. Yeah, And he'd be staring directly
at me.
Speaker 5 (23:17):
No, sir, not tomorrow from you. I'm like, okay. But
then they set you up.
Speaker 3 (23:22):
They had a dorm that you could stay in if
you were going to stay multiple days. Yea caf cafeteria
at the troll with the kids, uh, with with all
the players and their kids and whatever else.
Speaker 4 (23:33):
Codgers squad. I come back way back in the day.
I was at Platteville in the dorms because I was
living in Chicago and I was caught. I did Bears
camp and in fact, uh remember playing basketball every night.
Mike Greenberg was was there from now ESPN, and Mike
(23:54):
was was thin.
Speaker 5 (23:56):
It's his birthday today, so happy birthday.

But all right, well green he was still with Chicago
and I was a writer.

That was us and then we played basketball at the
end of the night. But Jim Harball was the quarterback.

a what is it, a relentless whatever it is, an
enthusiasm unknown to man.

That's pretty much where you get to with all of it.

Likewise, hey, you got that, and you know the boiler Makers, right,
Drew Brees going into the Hall of Fame.

Dude, we should talk about it. He deserves the respect.

We haven't talked about Drew Brees.
Speaker 3 (24:46):
H o f okay, so let's talk about Drew Brees.
Former San Diego Charger Drew Brees supplanted by Philip Rivers,
and we talked about it a little bit, right, the
idea of hey, he's gonna end up on Miami Dolphin
until he didn't. And NFL history is rewritten, right, change
the game, change the approach to how you move the ball.
(25:08):
Like the guy you know the old electric football game,
Anthony roll you out there. If you know this, you're
of a certain age, right, you'd line these It would
take you like twenty five minutes to line up the
guys for one.
Speaker 5 (25:19):
Play and then some of them.
Speaker 3 (25:22):
Yes, yes, I'm I'm gonna send you one for Christmas. Uh,
and we're gonna revisit it. But it's the idea that
you know, for those that didn't see this, uh and
don't know the game, but you got line up your
eleven on eleven and then you'd hit the the button
and they'd start running into each other, some would run
in circles whatever. But your quarterback, you gave him a

little little brown foam football.
Speaker 5 (25:47):
It kind of look like a football.
Speaker 1 (25:49):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (25:49):
And then they had the thing where you had to
spring back his arm. That's the throwing angle that Drew
Brees operated from for his entire NFL career. Yeah, a
man of a smaller stature, Right, we were talking about
Jalen Hurts a little bit earlier, step drop always yeah,
getting he's got to have a sight line. Yeah, so
he like, should he have more yardage added? Eight seven
(26:11):
seven ninety nine, because if we're going to talk about
where he threw it from versus the line of scrimmage,
there should be an awful lot more yards on Drew Breese's.
Speaker 4 (26:20):
Arm, even though they went fifteen yards.
Speaker 3 (26:24):
Right, even though his arm fell off down the stretch.
I mean, one of the great careers. I mean I
enjoyed watching the hell lot of him with Joe Tiller
at Purdue. I referenced it a little earlier in the show,
just a different approach. Got to talk to him about
that when he was coming into the league, going to
all those you know, rookie symposiums, and you know, the
trading card stuff premieres and and in the years thereafter,
(26:49):
just a little bit of back and forth on on
that offense and really revolutionizing a conference, but a different approach,
particularly with how they scheme up that offense. And look,
I'm not the biggest of Sean Payton guy in the world,
and that's well chronicled on the show. I respect the history,
(27:09):
uh and what they achieved there, but that offense that
he and Breeze operated and executed is a thing of
beauty and one of those things that as he goes
into the Hall of Fame. Uh, you see how much
it changed NFL offenses.
Speaker 4 (27:24):
Yeah, yeah, I kind of share your opinion.
Speaker 3 (27:28):
Well, yeah, man, you look I like me some me, right,
I don't walk around telling you that you need to
like some of me.
Speaker 5 (27:38):
Not the smartest man alive, but it's that kind of
thing you get.
Speaker 4 (27:43):
So that whole Listen, he's a great coach, he is.
I'll how he handled the bounty gate.
Speaker 3 (27:52):
Yeah, that's kind of get swept under the rug. Right,
Everybody goes after Belichick for things in the past.
Speaker 5 (28:00):
It's like, ah, what are you gonna do?
Speaker 4 (28:01):
And then the year that he's away, he comes back,
and I don't really appreciate what he did to his coach.
Is there one of those coaches is the best defensive
coordinator in the NFL, Steve Spagnolo. Yeah, and yea, Spag's
got a little scapegoat in that in that situation, I
didn't appreciate that.
Speaker 3 (28:20):
A lot of years of mediocrity mixed there in a
as well. But you know, changing the face of the game.
I'll give credit where credit is due. But you know,
we we pick and choose based on media friendliness, which
guys we like, which is why it's still kind of
interesting to watch how often Belichick and his North Carolina
forget about the Lombardi thing for a second. You want
(28:42):
to talk about a guy who everybody just hit co
sign on a lot of things, which is really odd
as he had to step away this last week from
his duties at North Carolina. But for Belichick, you know,
kinder Cudley or whatever right now, but still everybody has
the But don't forget this as we go through. All right,
(29:04):
we'll talk about the fight in Indiana. Because you're the
boiler Makers, Drew Breese alma mater, you're trying to make
some noise I don't think you picked the right guy
to pick on, but we'll get into that because he's
gonna come back and he's gonna say it in very
