the standings of all reset teams all went to zero
and zero and now we're starting again from the trade dental. Well,
it's only fair with all the teams changing so much
that we, you know, we started zero again.

That is such a Mets idea. If only every season
could be done that way. You remember, for so long
people were saying, why don't we do it like they
do it in a triple A and just have two
halves of seasons, right, and then you can have the
first half champ play the second half champ and then
yeah no, yeah.

No, we did that once. We did that in eighty one.

I don't want to do that in my fantasy football league.
I don't want to see that in real life. How
do you let a team that wins the first half
to go, yeah, you're in it no matter what. So

a pitcher losing all four games of a World Series?
Like all the unbroken records?

I was I don't want to name names. There was
a Mets closer like a decade ago who kind of
came close.

Okay, not not four games in a World Series. Not
four to break that record, right? I think about that
means you would have to be the losing pitcher in
all four games of a World Series.

You'll know that's not gonna happen. You wouldn't think it's
gonna happen.

I still say the most unbreakable baseball record is Johnny
Vandermier threw back to back no hitters. That'll never be
broken because no one's ever gonna throw three no hitters row.

few days, and I mean it, when I was in
Cobo this weekend and I saw the story that Kirk
Cousins and Max Crosby got into a fight at practice.
I said, no way, it's somebody else. It's Max Crosby, definitely,
but there's no way it's Kirk Cousins. No, no, no, it's

Max Crosby. And who I'm with you on maxwboroth There's
no way it's Max.

Probably Kirk Cousins impersonator. No, I would someone shouting through
the hallways you like that, And then thought he was
giving the fans what they wanted. Were at the open practice, there.

Would be a better chance it was former Canadian figure
skater Robin Cousins. Then it would be Kirk Cousins.

Okay, really you went figure skating. I was thinking Tanya Harding,

Think of people and how many people you know named
Cousins besides Boogey Cousins. But that was easy. I wanted
to go to Robin Cousins because that was pretty good.
So they get into a fight at practice because Max
Crosby clearly on brand, we're not supposed to hit the quarterback.
It's too close on a couple of rushing attempts and
hits Kirk Cousins, who stands up for himself and gets

into a bit of a back and forth. Both players
were given the next practice off, which, okay, Kirk Cousins
really didn't do anything other than to stand up for
himself because Max Crosby was Max Crosby ing his way
through practice. But the more I think about this, Steve
seeing this go on the way it is, he hadn't
been having a great camp for Nano. Mendez has been
having a really good camp. Cousins had his best day
(07:29):
of camp today, by by all onlookers and observers, he
had his best camp today. I'm wondering if we called
that quarterback derby for week one a little bit too
soon for week one, just because the Raiders announced me
they signed him to all that money, which was ridiculously
I mean, you know what it does that but the
fact that they said, okay, here we are Kirk Cousins.
(07:50):
It's been done before, all right by the Raiders. Uh
but you know, okay, they're calling the quarterback derby already
for Kirk Cousins, and Mendoz is going to back up,
which in theory doesn't make a lot of sense. He's
a number one overall pick. He should be starting. Cousins
was bad last year when he did play now you're
all of a sudden saying he's the guy, seeing how
(08:11):
this past weekend is gone where Cousins got the day off,
where you're like really needed to get the day off.
I don't know. Mendoza's been playing well. The Raiders announced
that Mendoza's gonna get a lot of time in the preseason. Okay,
all of this, I think we've called this quarterback derby
a little bit too early. Where if Mendoza continues to

have a good camp and he plays well in the games,
he will start Week one. Didn't think that was possible,
but now I can see it now. The Raiders announcing
Kirk Cousins as the starter, Okay, you allow Mendoza to
develop a little bit out of the Spotlight's.
Speaker 3 (08:53):
No constant questions or pressures.
Speaker 1 (08:55):
Can you start? Can you still catch up? Are you
far behind Kirk? Are you still holding all Fernando Mendoza.
The fact that Raiders said this right away at least
tamps that down, and Mendoza can learn at his own pace.
But he's playing really well and he'll get a lot
of time if he has some Carson Beck type games
(09:15):
in the preseason. I can see three days before the
regular season. We have our number one quarterback and it's
Fernando Mendoza.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
Funny you should say that because their first exhibition is
against Carson Beck and the Arizona Car tat the Over
on Thursday eight the Over on Thursday Night over the Raiders.
Three exhibitions are the next three Thursday nights. Two facts
about Kirk Cousins. One in about a week, he turns
thirty eight years old. Kirk Cousins as much success and
as many touchdowns as he has thrown. He's nearing three
(09:46):
hundred career touchdowns in the NFL, but these last two
years it's twenty eight TD's twenty one interceptions. The age
was starting to show, and to think that this is
a guy that had that Garan Tea contract when players
in the NFL weren't getting guaranteed contracts like that in
the pretty recent past has turned to this. I'm not
(10:09):
saying his career is over or anything like that. I'm
just saying they really quickly said, oh, don't know, he's
our starter. And I think what we just mentioned the
backstory to that is, why would you say with a
guy who hasn't played a snap in the NFL, it's
an open competition, Why would you throw that on him?
You want a good future with Mendoza. I don't think
(10:30):
if you say, hey, he might be our week one,
I don't think that would contribute to that.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
Now, Cousin's also closing in on three hundred shirts from Mervin's.
I don't know if you know that as also closing.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
In there Mervin's reference on the shows in his closet.
Speaker 1 (10:44):
He is that close. TJ Max still about one hundred
and fifty shirts. But but you.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
Know why, cause you like that.

But it would make sense for the Raiders to do
it that way, to say not that we have a
fixed competition, but to come at this from the floor
PLoP of Okay, we have Mendoza. We don't want to
rush them. We signed Cousins. Again, you don't need to
give Cousins all that money and that ridiculous deal. But
whatever we did, if Cousins is ready to start Mendoza,
(11:13):
it's like he needs a little bit of time to
use to life in the NFL. Great, It's what our
plan was.
Speaker 3 (11:17):
And it's good news for Cousins because they have a
weaker right early part of the schedule.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
And if it's not and Mendoza comes through faster. There's
no reason why we can't say, guess what, Fernando, You're
our week one starting quarterback.
Speaker 3 (11:31):
What I think would be the worst of both worlds
is they stick with the veteran. He does not at
all pan out, and by the end of the first
three four games they're thinking, we kind of have to
go to Mendoza.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
Of course they're gonna have to. He's the number one
pick in the draft. Of course you're gonna have to
go to him.
Speaker 3 (11:47):
This is why it would be bad is because once
you get through those first four games, the Raiders are
playing New England, Buffalo and the Rams in a row. Yeah,
so those are gonna be Mendoza's for three games.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
From a playing standpoint and from a from real a
reality standpoint off the field, practically, Mendoza is going to
have a better start to this year playing those four
defenses than he would come in As you said, with
the Rams, you have a better start there. Rather than saying, okay,
it's not working with with Fernando, with with Kirk Cousins.
The first four weeks, we're going there. But I also know,
(12:20):
I know reality, and I know it's so easy for
teams to say when the you know, on August green
Field and in the spring, oh yeah he doesn't. Our
first round quarterback doesn't need to play at all. We
don't need to see him for two years. And then
reality hits and when you're one in three, suddenly the
pressure from the team, from the media, from the fans,
(12:40):
and from everybody, from organizers, from their front.
Speaker 3 (12:43):
Office, maybe from Tom Brady in the front office, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (12:46):
To say, let's see our first round pick. Yeah, like
like the whole thing last year with Russell Wilson and
Jackson Darty said, Russell Wilson doesn't more than six games
before people want to see Jackson Dart. That's how it goes.
It's easy, ridiculously stupid decisions are made by team in
the offseason where they go, yeah, yeah, we don't need
to worry about that. Oh then when the footballs fly
for real, Oh wait a minute, now, we need to
(13:06):
see our first round quarterback way earlier.
Speaker 3 (13:08):
And it turns out what we thought might be true
was true. With the giant situation, those were the final
games of Russell Wilson's career. How was it he was
on the way out now playing his way out of
the Hall of Fame Russell Wilson. What the Raiders should
do is what any NFL team in this situation is
should do. You wait until the Jets are on your schedule,
and that's your rookies first game, whether it's Week one
(13:30):
or Week seventeen. You wait until the Jets are the opponent,
and then you stick him in the game.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
There. See, I agree with you that, But I think
before they looked at the Jets and said, okay, when
do we play the Raiders? We are the Raiders?
Speaker 3 (13:42):
Oh man ah, oh wait here it is all right.
First first game of November this year is Raiders at Jets.
So both teams will be getting their wish November the
first oh, he'll be starting long before. Is that gonna
be made the Fox main national game? Are they gonna
have to put it in primetime? Is there gonna be
some sort of flipping of the networks.
Speaker 1 (14:04):
Or Sunday Fernando Mendoza and Caid Klubnick square off as
the Jets and the Raiders tee it up at one pm.
Speaker 3 (14:14):
Kaid Klubnick, who has exhausted his seven years of eligibility, Jets.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
Fans are gonna want kid Klubnick by the beginning of October.
I mean really that, I mean read that. I understand
that's that's the crying out for a quarterback, whether you're
taking number one overall, ten overall late in the first round,
but especially when you are the first overall pick. Yeah,
they got to see you early. They have to. And again,
it would make sense if this was the way the
(14:39):
Raiders thought it, but the way the last few days. Okay,
here's Cousins in a scuffle. He has been playing well,
did have a good day today. But now Mendoza's playing
well and he's gonna get a lot if if he
has some Carson Beck type games. How do you not
go to him week one? How do you not say, Okay, Fernando,
you're our guy week one. Sorry, Kirk, we're paying you
some money, but you're not. You're not gonna start just
(15:02):
I don't know. Maybe they needed to make a promise
to him, no matter what, you're gonna start the season.
But all that's out the window. I'm not saying I
know that, but like, why else would you do that? Ay,
he could start week one. I think the door is
really open for him to starting week one.
Speaker 3 (15:16):
Just need to avoid him starting his pro career in
that tough three game stretch, their toughest three game stretch
of the season in October, because once you get to
mid season when you're playing the Jets, the game after
that is the forty nine Ers, and by then literally
half the roster will be injured. And then in the
second half of the season you got Browns and Titans
and Arizona, and I would throw a rookie into that
(15:39):
type of schedule after the Rams and the other tier.
There's no way.
Speaker 1 (15:43):
If it's bad, you're gonna wait till Week eight or
week not. No way, there's no way. If he was
taken in the second round, yeah, okay, but he's a
number one overall pick. Sorry, you're gonna see him earlier
than that.
Speaker 3 (15:54):
So there are ifs. And that includes his performance which
starts Prmance, which starts Mormance Thursday. Yeah, the three games
he will be playing, we assume he'll play all three games.
Speaker 1 (16:04):
He's got to play well in all three games. Like,
if he just looks serviceable, the moment's not too big
for him, they'll wait to debut him.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
And then she's really good as the front office and
a coaching stat But if he's really good.
Speaker 1 (16:15):
It's oh, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Now we can do this,
and we can because they will have allowed him to
spend the entire preseason learning at his own pace, off
of the spotlight, and when we put him out there
the season starting, doesn't have time to think about it,
doesn't enough time to go, doesn't have time to sit
back and and think, oh, now I'm the starter here. No,
he's prepared all all preseason. They've thrown a lot of
(16:38):
stuff at him. He's ready. They're not going to postpone
the future like the Raiders could be doing something really
good here, Steve, And that doesn't happen that often. Like, really,
it does not happen.

Most of the last twenty years, it hasn't ended.

I mean since two thousand and two, it hasn't happened.
At the end of the year. Then Derek Carr got
hurt and that was really bad because I probably would
have gone to the Super Bowl that year.

Yeah, until he comes out of our time to play
for the Jets. Until then. December fourteenth, Bernando Mendoza and

to the dodge in a second. But this bizarre story
with the Red Sox and the Blue Jays. Look, I
always want to say that I have all the answers.
I'm gonna do my best. Has to explain what's becoming
(19:01):
this big developing story because it is about as complex
as you could possibly imagine for a two to one
game and one play that happened in this game, but
it's kind of taken over and it we try to
explain it to you how it happened. Really, it's Steve
(19:22):
in Toronto, in Toronto. If we'll try to do this,
but again, this is about as complex a play that
you could go through in Major League Baseball, but we'll
try to do it. Because you don't I like a challenge.
Speaker 3 (19:34):
The scoreboard was wrong. There was a huge delay. Oh boy,
I think it was Sportsnet in Canada said seventeen minutes
between the end of the top of the seventh and
the beginning of the bottom of the Shit.
Speaker 1 (19:46):
It took seventeen minutes for the Red Sox to score
a run.
Speaker 3 (19:49):
And it wasn't a long delay because they were singing
so much at the seventh. No, no, no, it wasn't.
Speaker 1 (19:54):
The Norway fans weren't there. No. Now, the Blue Jays
did win this game two to one. The point is
how the Red Sox got their run. There were runners
at first and third with one out in the seventh inning.
The scoreboard erroneously showed there were two outs. Fly ball
(20:15):
to the outfield, the runners just go home, don't tag up.
Ball is caught. Blue Jays realize there's only one out.
They double up the runner at first base endo the
inning we think, we think, so inning ends they double
up the runner. But there's a discrepancy in that. Well,
(20:37):
you got the guy out at first, but the runner
scored from third before you got the double play.
Speaker 3 (20:44):
So the runner at third kind of tagged up and
the runner did not tag up the runner. Siegler, who
was on third, just went home because he thought there
were two outs, right, So there was a there was
a discrepancy on the outs. Nobody knew how many outs
there were or they didn't know how many outs there
were because play before they rule a double play even
though only one out was gotten on it. Okay, so
(21:05):
there was a hot shot in the infield before that,
so that caused the confusion. So really it's two things
wrong on the Toronto scoreboard. Yes, it's two outs is wrong,
and then they're showing it to nothing Toronto score when
they actually wind up awarding a run to the visitor Boston.
Speaker 1 (21:20):
So one out, runners at first and third, flyball to
the outfield, the runners just run thinking there's two outs,
fly ball is caught, runner at first is doubled up,
inning is over. Blue Jay said, well, no runs. The
umpires went back and looked at this, went back to
Secaucus and looked at it. We went back to New
York and looked at it. And apparently the rule says
(21:42):
that whether he tags up or not, the guy scored
a run. You got the runner out by throwing to
first base to get the double play. So that run scores.
The blue jay said, well, wait a minute, Wait a minute,
wait a minute. If that's the case, you didn't give
us a chance to appeal the play at third base
because they would appeal the play at third, and that
(22:02):
would have been the other out right because he didn't
tag up and they knew he didn't tag up. But
the umpire said, no, that's the ruling. That's the out
you went for. And so even though that's what the
inning is over, it's out.
Speaker 3 (22:15):
So we're giving you the run at the plate. We're
giving Boston that run. In other words, the crew chief
is saying, the runner that was on third, yeah, I
didn't tag, but at least cross home before that third
out of the inning was made over at.
Speaker 1 (22:26):
First and the bluech was like, wait a minute, well,
if that's the case, but we want to appeal the
play at third, and the umpire said no, it was
a timing play and that once the timing was over
and the play was done, it was over. That was
the end of the play. Seventeen minutes it took for
them to figure this out. The video of the players
standing in the outfield just going what the hell is
going on? Like is is just it's worth the price
(22:49):
of admission for this story alone. So seventeen minutes it
took for the Red Sox to get their only run
of the game.
Speaker 3 (22:55):
So the run counted because the run home before because
he scored were recorded at first.
Speaker 1 (23:01):
Had they thrown the third to get him out, it
would have been an out. They would have had him
out a third right, and and because he didn't tag up,
so that would have been the out even though he scored,
that would have been the third out of the inning.
But because they threw to first, that run counts and
the Blue Jays couldn't appeal it, so they were mad
the Red again seventeen minutes and I'm looking for this out.
Speaker 3 (23:22):
The rule book. The actual sentence is the appeal play
decision takes precedence in determining the out. We weren't appealing
anything at home with a.
Speaker 1 (23:30):
Run, no, because they thought the inning was over.
Speaker 3 (23:35):
The two outs when the fly ball was hit.
Speaker 1 (23:37):
Yeah, right, we thought it was out. But then the
Blue Jays realized it that there was only one out. So,
because the whole thing is the scoreboard only doesn't serve
as anything official. It just served to confuse everything. It's
not like well the scoreboard showed two outs. Everybody was
screwed up on it. No, that's just the way.
Speaker 3 (23:52):
Well it's the home team scoreboard. So I'm sorry, home manager.
You got no reason to carry this on for fifteen minutes.
Speaker 1 (23:59):
They are Can you do me a favorite? Can you
watch a scoreboard? I got to run to the bathroom
for just a sex second. I'll be right back. Yeah, yeah,
no problem, no problem. What happened on that left It
was a double play, right, yeah, by two outs? There
we go.
Speaker 3 (24:09):
But they thought it was just thought it was the
third out, and they leave. And the actual rule book
says the defensive team is considered to have left the
field when the pitcher and all the infielder have left
fair territory on the way to the bench.
Speaker 1 (24:22):
So a fly ball to the outfield and a runner
scores without tagging up. You know, these are moments when
I go back to Jason Starr. There's very few things
that I remember my entire but I remember him telling
me this so long ago in to the Basement writer.
Nothing's more been morture than him saying they've been playing
baseball for one hundred and fifty years and still a
couple of times a month, something will happen. You'll say,
(24:45):
I've never seen that before.
Speaker 3 (24:47):
And the umpire said to the pool reporter afterwards, Yeah, well,
the error on the scoreboards showing two outs when it
was only actually one out in the inning. That didn't
affect anything. The scoreboard is just a courtesy for the fans. Well,
it's a cur it's article looked at by the players.
I don't think you can accurately say the scoreboard air
didn't affect anything that unfolded.
Speaker 1 (25:08):
Yeah, there's stuff on the scoreboard that everything, like the
pitch clock is on the scoreboard, because what do you want,
the homeplate umpire like Frau Farbisla going twenty nine, twenty hey,
twenty seven.
Speaker 3 (25:19):
The number of visits to the mound that's on the scoreboard.
Speaker 1 (25:22):
I mean, there's lots of stuff on the scoreboard. It's
not just hey, oh, here's the helmet races. Oh that's great.

Yeah, guys, scores in an American League game tonight from
third base on a sack fly without ever tagging up. Now,
Boston did lose the game two to one, so this
is more like a cute story for history.
Speaker 1 (25:39):
Yes, oh it is. Yes, it's very cute, yes, but
I can't. I can't get over the fact that it's
a seventeen minute delay, like you could. It took you
seventeen minutes to get this right.

Do somebody have a rule books?

This reminds me of a PAC ten excuse me, Pac
twelve football game that I covered Chip Kelly in Oregon
against Pete Carroll and US, And they took a long
time for a video review and then the decision they
finally came on the video review, it's affected something else,
and there was without going to another down, without continuing
(26:12):
the game, a second video review about something completely separate,
and it wound up taking literally about fifteen minutes.

Yeah, I mean, I think I could find something in
the in the in the uh uh if I went
into too my glove compartment and you pull out the
car manual when something, I could find something faster there.
I think then it took them to find in the
rule of sacrifice file, that's a close one sacrifice fly.

From what we're doing is we're giving the Red Sox
four runs and you have lost both runs. Okay, that's
what's happened right there. But again, if kind of Falifa
had been off third a little bit long, my brothers
take that you designed would have won.

So really saying sac fly without the runner at third
actually tagging up. But nothing to see here. People, Please
return to your homes and houses of worship.

the World champions are? Just understanding that, right, we're dealing
with stuff of a very big priority here. Okay, this
is very low on it.

history should so the World Series would have been running

again that the post trade deadline, when the Dodgers a
supposed to ruin baseball has not been kind of them.
It's their second win since they ruin baseball. I know

They are now three games, three plus games out of
the best record in the National League. They no longer
have one of the top two records in the National League.
Everything is fine, all right. The Dodgers have won the
last two World Old Series. Yes, it happens. This is
why they call it the dog Days of August. It's
not like the Dodge have been playing five hundred all
a year and can't get it together. I would love

to have the problems of being twenty three games over
five hundred, people thinking oh, I'm really underachieving.

Right, and the Braves the Dodgers, they've tied the Brakes
spot to avoid the first round of the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (30:20):
Because now because now suddenly the Braves can't beat the Mets.
The Mets win the season series with the Braves for
the first time in nine years, you know, nine years.
Speaker 3 (30:29):
How they say around the National League, those Mets, those
are tough. You know, we're probably not going to be
winning that game Mets come to town. That's the closer
on the aisle. No, probably not gonna happen.
Speaker 1 (30:38):
Mets just had to trade their best four relievers and
now they can't lose, right, That's.
Speaker 3 (30:42):
That's right, because Code with his fifty two eer, you
make him your closer and then secure a game that way.
Speaker 1 (30:49):
But really, I mean it's in the in the fall,
when we get to the playoffs. Yeah, the Dodge will
be vulnerable because you don't have no idea how the
starting pitching is going to go there. Bullpen, he has
closed it out tonight, but he's been dicey. But overall, yeah,
the Dodgers are fine. They're absolutely fine. This is just
a rough patch after being twenty eight games over five hundred. Yes,

oh my goodness, there are twenty three games over now.
The Dodgers are fine. Everything is okay.

Well, I would say the rough patch has lasted about
a month and a half because since July first.
Speaker 1 (31:20):
But that's the World Series and you start out gangbusters
the next year weeks You're right, Okay, that's gonna happen
the other years with the Dodgers not coming off the
World Championship where we played great but we didn't win
at all, you're still hungry the entirety of the next season.
This is still well, we've won the last two World Series.
We just traded for the best pitcher in baseball.

I think we're okay. So scoobl pitches tonight last five
innings because it was ninety five pitches. Blake Snell is
coming off the injured list and officially is the starter
for Tuesday night. I have no idea who's starting Wednesday,
but I can tell confidently tell you that it's not
Emmitt Sheian not in the majors. He had a short
outing in the miners. He's not coming back up to

the standings of all reset teams all went to zero
and zero and now we're starting again from the trade dental. Well,
it's only fair with all the teams changing so much
that we, you know, we started zero again.

That is such a Mets idea. If only every season
could be done that way. You remember, for so long
people were saying, why don't we do it like they
do it in a triple A and just have two
halves of seasons, right, and then you can have the
first half champ play the second half champ and then
yeah no, yeah.

No, we did that once. We did that in eighty one.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
I don't want to do that in my fantasy football league.
I don't want to see that in real life. How
do you let a team that wins the first half
to go, yeah, you're in it no matter what. So
what are we playing the second half for? I don't know.
Sharp that happened nineteen eighty one strike created two halves
of seasons, and the Dodgers at the time of the
strike won the first half. As it turned out, they
had no incentive to put the pedal to the medal,

as they say, in the second half. So the Cincinnati
Reds wound up complaining after the nineteen eighty one they
had the.

Best record in baseball and they missed the.

Playoffs's right because they had to play hard both halves,
and the team in their division that you know, won
it in the first half didn't have to play hard.

You just think about that having a strike and again

Absolutely that after the strike happens, right when strike, you know,
part way through the season, coming back, they decide, oh, yeah,
if you were in first place, then you're in the playoffs.

starting over from scratching it. Why are we doing that?

baseball's labor contracts used to end during the season. How
long did it take in baseball history until I figured out,
can we just make the labor deal extend through the playoffs?

The World Series. That's a that's a bad time to
have it expired during the season. Let's do it after

It wasn't that the World Series the Dodgers won, Like,

It's gonna be hard to be broken. Can you about
a pitcher losing all four games of a World Series?
Like all the unbroken records?

I was I don't want to name names. There was
a Mets closer like a decade ago who kind of
came close.

Okay, not not four games in a World Series. Not
four to break that record, right? I think about that
means you would have to be the losing pitcher in
all four games of a World Series.

I did.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
You'll know that's not gonna happen. You wouldn't think it's
gonna happen.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
I still say the most unbreakable baseball record is Johnny
Vandermier threw back to back no hitters. That'll never be
broken because no one's ever gonna throw three no hitters row.

I think the I think could you get lucky three
starts in a row? Nobody's frost nine innings, three games
in a row. You're right, But I think Cy Young

You could win twenty games a year for twenty, twenty years,
for twenty years, twenty. You can come up at twenty
fireballer and win twenty games a year for twenty years,
and you're one hundred short. One hundred, not five short.
You're one hundred short winning twenty games a year for

So the fifty six game hitting streak of DiMaggio can
one day be broken.

Well, at least we've seen people get somewhat. We've seen
people get halfway there. Rose got to forty four. I mean,
the season ones, obviously are are easier because you're only
talking about achieving for a season versus achieving for an
entire career.

But career five hundred wins for a pitcher.

Gotta get five to twelve five twelve to beat that
five twelve.

By the way, everything is final. Now, Texas did win
in ten innings against the Angels, so Texas still a
half game back at Houston, which won in ten innings.
And yes, the Dodgers somehow won. They actually came back,
they actually got clutch hitting. They actually wound up winning
this game. Max Munsey on his bobblehead night, Yeah, with
a basis loaded double for three RBIs in the sixth

and the lead.

So again, we'll lot more baseball coming up in a
few minutes. But judging by the stories of the last
few days, and I mean it, when I was in
Cobo this weekend and I saw the story that Kirk
Cousins and Max Crosby got into a fight at practice.
I said, no way, it's somebody else. It's Max Crosby, definitely,
but there's no way it's Kirk Cousins. No, no, no, it's
(06:18):
Max Crosby. And who I'm with you on maxwboroth There's
no way it's Max.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
Probably Kirk Cousins impersonator. No, I would someone shouting through
the hallways you like that, And then thought he was
giving the fans what they wanted. Were at the open practice, there.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
Would be a better chance it was former Canadian figure
skater Robin Cousins. Then it would be Kirk Cousins.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
Okay, really you went figure skating. I was thinking Tanya Harding,
But well.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
Think of people and how many people you know named
Cousins besides Boogey Cousins. But that was easy. I wanted
to go to Robin Cousins because that was pretty good.
So they get into a fight at practice because Max
Crosby clearly on brand, we're not supposed to hit the quarterback.
It's too close on a couple of rushing attempts and
hits Kirk Cousins, who stands up for himself and gets
(07:06):
into a bit of a back and forth. Both players
were given the next practice off, which, okay, Kirk Cousins
really didn't do anything other than to stand up for
himself because Max Crosby was Max Crosby ing his way
through practice. But the more I think about this, Steve
seeing this go on the way it is, he hadn't
been having a great camp for Nano. Mendez has been
having a really good camp. Cousins had his best day
(07:29):
of camp today, by by all onlookers and observers, he
had his best camp today. I'm wondering if we called
that quarterback derby for week one a little bit too
soon for week one, just because the Raiders announced me
they signed him to all that money, which was ridiculously
I mean, you know what it does that but the
fact that they said, okay, here we are Kirk Cousins.
(07:50):
It's been done before, all right by the Raiders. Uh
but you know, okay, they're calling the quarterback derby already
for Kirk Cousins, and Mendoz is going to back up,
which in theory doesn't make a lot of sense. He's
a number one overall pick. He should be starting. Cousins
was bad last year when he did play now you're
all of a sudden saying he's the guy, seeing how
(08:11):
this past weekend is gone where Cousins got the day off,
where you're like really needed to get the day off.
I don't know. Mendoza's been playing well. The Raiders announced
that Mendoza's gonna get a lot of time in the preseason. Okay,
all of this, I think we've called this quarterback derby
a little bit too early. Where if Mendoza continues to
(08:35):
have a good camp and he plays well in the games,
he will start Week one. Didn't think that was possible,
but now I can see it now. The Raiders announcing
Kirk Cousins as the starter, Okay, you allow Mendoza to
develop a little bit out of the Spotlight's.
Speaker 3 (08:53):
No constant questions or pressures.
Speaker 1 (08:55):
Can you start? Can you still catch up? Are you
far behind Kirk? Are you still holding all Fernando Mendoza.
The fact that Raiders said this right away at least
tamps that down, and Mendoza can learn at his own pace.
But he's playing really well and he'll get a lot
of time if he has some Carson Beck type games
(09:15):
in the preseason. I can see three days before the
regular season. We have our number one quarterback and it's
Fernando Mendoza.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
Funny you should say that because their first exhibition is
against Carson Beck and the Arizona Car tat the Over
on Thursday eight the Over on Thursday Night over the Raiders.
Three exhibitions are the next three Thursday nights. Two facts
about Kirk Cousins. One in about a week, he turns
thirty eight years old. Kirk Cousins as much success and
as many touchdowns as he has thrown. He's nearing three
(09:46):
hundred career touchdowns in the NFL, but these last two
years it's twenty eight TD's twenty one interceptions. The age
was starting to show, and to think that this is
a guy that had that Garan Tea contract when players
in the NFL weren't getting guaranteed contracts like that in
the pretty recent past has turned to this. I'm not
(10:09):
saying his career is over or anything like that. I'm
just saying they really quickly said, oh, don't know, he's
our starter. And I think what we just mentioned the
backstory to that is, why would you say with a
guy who hasn't played a snap in the NFL, it's
an open competition, Why would you throw that on him?
You want a good future with Mendoza. I don't think
(10:30):
if you say, hey, he might be our week one,
I don't think that would contribute to that.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
Now, Cousin's also closing in on three hundred shirts from Mervin's.
I don't know if you know that as also closing.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
In there Mervin's reference on the shows in his closet.
Speaker 1 (10:44):
He is that close. TJ Max still about one hundred
and fifty shirts. But but you.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
Know why, cause you like that.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
But it would make sense for the Raiders to do
it that way, to say not that we have a
fixed competition, but to come at this from the floor
PLoP of Okay, we have Mendoza. We don't want to
rush them. We signed Cousins. Again, you don't need to
give Cousins all that money and that ridiculous deal. But
whatever we did, if Cousins is ready to start Mendoza,
(11:13):
it's like he needs a little bit of time to
use to life in the NFL. Great, It's what our
plan was.
Speaker 3 (11:17):
And it's good news for Cousins because they have a
weaker right early part of the schedule.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
And if it's not and Mendoza comes through faster. There's
no reason why we can't say, guess what, Fernando, You're
our week one starting quarterback.
Speaker 3 (11:31):
What I think would be the worst of both worlds
is they stick with the veteran. He does not at
all pan out, and by the end of the first
three four games they're thinking, we kind of have to
go to Mendoza.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
Of course they're gonna have to. He's the number one
pick in the draft. Of course you're gonna have to
go to him.
Speaker 3 (11:47):
This is why it would be bad is because once
you get through those first four games, the Raiders are
playing New England, Buffalo and the Rams in a row. Yeah,
so those are gonna be Mendoza's for three games.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
From a playing standpoint and from a from real a
reality standpoint off the field, practically, Mendoza is going to
have a better start to this year playing those four
defenses than he would come in As you said, with
the Rams, you have a better start there. Rather than saying, okay,
it's not working with with Fernando, with with Kirk Cousins.
The first four weeks, we're going there. But I also know,
(12:20):
I know reality, and I know it's so easy for
teams to say when the you know, on August green
Field and in the spring, oh yeah he doesn't. Our
first round quarterback doesn't need to play at all. We
don't need to see him for two years. And then
reality hits and when you're one in three, suddenly the
pressure from the team, from the media, from the fans,
(12:40):
and from everybody, from organizers, from their front.
Speaker 3 (12:43):
Office, maybe from Tom Brady in the front office, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (12:46):
To say, let's see our first round pick. Yeah, like
like the whole thing last year with Russell Wilson and
Jackson Darty said, Russell Wilson doesn't more than six games
before people want to see Jackson Dart. That's how it goes.
It's easy, ridiculously stupid decisions are made by team in
the offseason where they go, yeah, yeah, we don't need
to worry about that. Oh then when the footballs fly
for real, Oh wait a minute, now, we need to
(13:06):
see our first round quarterback way earlier.
Speaker 3 (13:08):
And it turns out what we thought might be true
was true. With the giant situation, those were the final
games of Russell Wilson's career. How was it he was
on the way out now playing his way out of
the Hall of Fame Russell Wilson. What the Raiders should
do is what any NFL team in this situation is
should do. You wait until the Jets are on your schedule,
and that's your rookies first game, whether it's Week one
(13:30):
or Week seventeen. You wait until the Jets are the opponent,
and then you stick him in the game.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
There. See, I agree with you that, But I think
before they looked at the Jets and said, okay, when
do we play the Raiders? We are the Raiders?

Oh man ah, oh wait here it is all right.
First first game of November this year is Raiders at Jets.
So both teams will be getting their wish November the
first oh, he'll be starting long before. Is that gonna
be made the Fox main national game? Are they gonna
have to put it in primetime? Is there gonna be
some sort of flipping of the networks.

Or Sunday Fernando Mendoza and Caid Klubnick square off as
the Jets and the Raiders tee it up at one pm.

Kaid Klubnick, who has exhausted his seven years of eligibility, Jets.

Fans are gonna want kid Klubnick by the beginning of October.
I mean really that, I mean read that. I understand
that's that's the crying out for a quarterback, whether you're
taking number one overall, ten overall late in the first round,
but especially when you are the first overall pick. Yeah,
they got to see you early. They have to. And again,
it would make sense if this was the way the

Raiders thought it, but the way the last few days. Okay,
here's Cousins in a scuffle. He has been playing well,
did have a good day today. But now Mendoza's playing
well and he's gonna get a lot if if he
has some Carson Beck type games. How do you not
go to him week one? How do you not say, Okay, Fernando,
you're our guy week one. Sorry, Kirk, we're paying you
some money, but you're not. You're not gonna start just
(15:02):
I don't know. Maybe they needed to make a promise
to him, no matter what, you're gonna start the season.
But all that's out the window. I'm not saying I
know that, but like, why else would you do that? Ay,
he could start week one. I think the door is
really open for him to starting week one.
Speaker 3 (15:16):
Just need to avoid him starting his pro career in
that tough three game stretch, their toughest three game stretch
of the season in October, because once you get to
mid season when you're playing the Jets, the game after
that is the forty nine Ers, and by then literally
half the roster will be injured. And then in the
second half of the season you got Browns and Titans
and Arizona, and I would throw a rookie into that
(15:39):
type of schedule after the Rams and the other tier.
There's no way.
Speaker 1 (15:43):
If it's bad, you're gonna wait till Week eight or
week not. No way, there's no way. If he was
taken in the second round, yeah, okay, but he's a
number one overall pick. Sorry, you're gonna see him earlier
than that.
Speaker 3 (15:54):
So there are ifs. And that includes his performance which
starts Prmance, which starts Mormance Thursday. Yeah, the three games
he will be playing, we assume he'll play all three games.
Speaker 1 (16:04):
He's got to play well in all three games. Like,
if he just looks serviceable, the moment's not too big
for him, they'll wait to debut him.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
And then she's really good as the front office and
a coaching stat But if he's really good.
Speaker 1 (16:15):
It's oh, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Now we can do this,
and we can because they will have allowed him to
spend the entire preseason learning at his own pace, off
of the spotlight, and when we put him out there
the season starting, doesn't have time to think about it,
doesn't enough time to go, doesn't have time to sit
back and and think, oh, now I'm the starter here. No,
he's prepared all all preseason. They've thrown a lot of

stuff at him. He's ready. They're not going to postpone
the future like the Raiders could be doing something really
good here, Steve, And that doesn't happen that often. Like, really,
it does not happen.

Most of the last twenty years, it hasn't ended.

I mean since two thousand and two, it hasn't happened.
At the end of the year. Then Derek Carr got
hurt and that was really bad because I probably would
have gone to the Super Bowl that year.

to the dodge in a second. But this bizarre story
with the Red Sox and the Blue Jays. Look, I
always want to say that I have all the answers.
I'm gonna do my best. Has to explain what's becoming
(19:01):
this big developing story because it is about as complex
as you could possibly imagine for a two to one
game and one play that happened in this game, but
it's kind of taken over and it we try to
explain it to you how it happened. Really, it's Steve
(19:22):
in Toronto, in Toronto. If we'll try to do this,
but again, this is about as complex a play that
you could go through in Major League Baseball, but we'll
try to do it. Because you don't I like a challenge.
Speaker 3 (19:34):
The scoreboard was wrong. There was a huge delay. Oh boy,
I think it was Sportsnet in Canada said seventeen minutes
between the end of the top of the seventh and
the beginning of the bottom of the Shit.
Speaker 1 (19:46):
It took seventeen minutes for the Red Sox to score
a run.
Speaker 3 (19:49):
And it wasn't a long delay because they were singing
so much at the seventh. No, no, no, it wasn't.
Speaker 1 (19:54):
The Norway fans weren't there. No. Now, the Blue Jays
did win this game two to one. The point is
how the Red Sox got their run. There were runners
at first and third with one out in the seventh inning.
The scoreboard erroneously showed there were two outs. Fly ball
(20:15):
to the outfield, the runners just go home, don't tag up.
Ball is caught. Blue Jays realize there's only one out.
They double up the runner at first base endo the
inning we think, we think, so inning ends they double
up the runner. But there's a discrepancy in that. Well,
(20:37):
you got the guy out at first, but the runner
scored from third before you got the double play.
Speaker 3 (20:44):
So the runner at third kind of tagged up and
the runner did not tag up the runner. Siegler, who
was on third, just went home because he thought there
were two outs, right, So there was a there was
a discrepancy on the outs. Nobody knew how many outs
there were or they didn't know how many outs there
were because play before they rule a double play even
though only one out was gotten on it. Okay, so
(21:05):
there was a hot shot in the infield before that,
so that caused the confusion. So really it's two things
wrong on the Toronto scoreboard. Yes, it's two outs is wrong,
and then they're showing it to nothing Toronto score when
they actually wind up awarding a run to the visitor Boston.
Speaker 1 (21:20):
So one out, runners at first and third, flyball to
the outfield, the runners just run thinking there's two outs,
fly ball is caught, runner at first is doubled up,
inning is over. Blue Jay said, well, no runs. The
umpires went back and looked at this, went back to
Secaucus and looked at it. We went back to New
York and looked at it. And apparently the rule says
(21:42):
that whether he tags up or not, the guy scored
a run. You got the runner out by throwing to
first base to get the double play. So that run scores.
The blue jay said, well, wait a minute, Wait a minute,
wait a minute. If that's the case, you didn't give
us a chance to appeal the play at third base
because they would appeal the play at third, and that
(22:02):
would have been the other out right because he didn't
tag up and they knew he didn't tag up. But
the umpire said, no, that's the ruling. That's the out
you went for. And so even though that's what the
inning is over, it's out.
Speaker 3 (22:15):
So we're giving you the run at the plate. We're
giving Boston that run. In other words, the crew chief
is saying, the runner that was on third, yeah, I
didn't tag, but at least cross home before that third
out of the inning was made over at.
Speaker 1 (22:26):
First and the bluech was like, wait a minute, well,
if that's the case, but we want to appeal the
play at third, and the umpire said no, it was
a timing play and that once the timing was over
and the play was done, it was over. That was
the end of the play. Seventeen minutes it took for
them to figure this out. The video of the players
standing in the outfield just going what the hell is
going on? Like is is just it's worth the price
(22:49):
of admission for this story alone. So seventeen minutes it
took for the Red Sox to get their only run
of the game.
Speaker 3 (22:55):
So the run counted because the run home before because
he scored were recorded at first.
Speaker 1 (23:01):
Had they thrown the third to get him out, it
would have been an out. They would have had him
out a third right, and and because he didn't tag up,
so that would have been the out even though he scored,
that would have been the third out of the inning.
But because they threw to first, that run counts and
the Blue Jays couldn't appeal it, so they were mad
the Red again seventeen minutes and I'm looking for this out.
Speaker 3 (23:22):
The rule book. The actual sentence is the appeal play
decision takes precedence in determining the out. We weren't appealing
anything at home with a.
Speaker 1 (23:30):
Run, no, because they thought the inning was over.
Speaker 3 (23:35):
The two outs when the fly ball was hit.
Speaker 1 (23:37):
Yeah, right, we thought it was out. But then the
Blue Jays realized it that there was only one out. So,
because the whole thing is the scoreboard only doesn't serve
as anything official. It just served to confuse everything. It's
not like well the scoreboard showed two outs. Everybody was
screwed up on it. No, that's just the way.
Speaker 3 (23:52):
Well it's the home team scoreboard. So I'm sorry, home manager.
You got no reason to carry this on for fifteen minutes.
Speaker 1 (23:59):
They are Can you do me a favorite? Can you
watch a scoreboard? I got to run to the bathroom
for just a sex second. I'll be right back. Yeah, yeah,
no problem, no problem. What happened on that left It
was a double play, right, yeah, by two outs? There
we go.
Speaker 3 (24:09):
But they thought it was just thought it was the
third out, and they leave. And the actual rule book
says the defensive team is considered to have left the
field when the pitcher and all the infielder have left
fair territory on the way to the bench.
Speaker 1 (24:22):
So a fly ball to the outfield and a runner
scores without tagging up. You know, these are moments when
I go back to Jason Starr. There's very few things
that I remember my entire but I remember him telling
me this so long ago in to the Basement writer.
Nothing's more been morture than him saying they've been playing
baseball for one hundred and fifty years and still a
couple of times a month, something will happen. You'll say,
(24:45):
I've never seen that before.
Speaker 3 (24:47):
And the umpire said to the pool reporter afterwards, Yeah, well,
the error on the scoreboards showing two outs when it
was only actually one out in the inning. That didn't
affect anything. The scoreboard is just a courtesy for the fans. Well,
it's a cur it's article looked at by the players.
I don't think you can accurately say the scoreboard air
didn't affect anything that unfolded.
Speaker 1 (25:08):
Yeah, there's stuff on the scoreboard that everything, like the
pitch clock is on the scoreboard, because what do you want,
the homeplate umpire like Frau Farbisla going twenty nine, twenty hey,
twenty seven.
Speaker 3 (25:19):
The number of visits to the mound that's on the scoreboard.
Speaker 1 (25:22):
I mean, there's lots of stuff on the scoreboard. It's
not just hey, oh, here's the helmet races. Oh that's great.
Speaker 3 (25:27):
Yeah, guys, scores in an American League game tonight from
third base on a sack fly without ever tagging up. Now,
Boston did lose the game two to one, so this
is more like a cute story for history.
Speaker 1 (25:39):
Yes, oh it is. Yes, it's very cute, yes, but
I can't. I can't get over the fact that it's
a seventeen minute delay, like you could. It took you
seventeen minutes to get this right.
Speaker 3 (25:49):
Do somebody have a rule books?
Speaker 1 (25:51):
Read a rule book?
Speaker 3 (25:52):
This reminds me of a PAC ten excuse me, Pac
twelve football game that I covered Chip Kelly in Oregon
against Pete Carroll and US, And they took a long
time for a video review and then the decision they
finally came on the video review, it's affected something else,
and there was without going to another down, without continuing
(26:12):
the game, a second video review about something completely separate,
and it wound up taking literally about fifteen minutes.
Speaker 1 (26:19):
Yeah, I mean, I think I could find something in
the in the in the uh uh if I went
into too my glove compartment and you pull out the
car manual when something, I could find something faster there.
I think then it took them to find in the
rule of sacrifice file, that's a close one sacrifice fly.
Let me say that's page hang on, page one eighty
eight to one ninety two. Hang on, Let me look, okay,
(26:40):
let me say, let me say, okay, great sacrifice file.
Let me see what's going on here.
Speaker 3 (26:42):
The thing is, I would love the to hear the
actual umpire because you know, they have the microphones on
the crew chief and he actually has to turn on
the mic and explain it. This is a great idea,
by the way Baseball to finally put the MIC's recent
years on the umpires.
Speaker 1 (26:57):
Uh, just want to let you guys know that the
we really don't know what happened boo. But in the end,
really kinnor Falifa should have had a bigger.
Speaker 3 (27:07):
Lead off the third base.
Speaker 1 (27:08):
Just this Flipp's talk about priorities sorright, he did a
bigger lead off the third base.
Speaker 3 (27:12):
You guys are the world champions.

It's interesting that once he did turn the on the mic,
he said, what we have here is those are the
actual first sentences. He's apparently seen all the Paul Newman

have here is a failure to communicate. That's exactly why.

That's right. Why did he think that? Because the scoreboard
in Toronto said outs two that get fixed seventeen minutes later.

That's baseball, susan, So dealing with that, you know the
two big baseball stores tonight, that and Scooble on the Dodgers.

Well, I gotta hear I can I think we have
the actual umpire of trying to turn on the mic
and do and say what happened to the people?

Okay, it all straight?

Now the run is going to score. Who runs for Toronto?
One run for Boston.
Speaker 1 (28:35):
Toronto still has two runs. You didn't lose any runs
in that, so you know that's the score.

If the delay had been twenty two minutes, I'm sure
they'd found a way to take a run away.
Speaker 1 (28:45):
From what we're doing is we're giving the Red Sox
four runs and you have lost both runs. Okay, that's
what's happened right there. But again, if kind of Falifa
had been off third a little bit long, my brothers
take that you designed would have won.
Speaker 3 (28:59):
So really saying sac fly without the runner at third
actually tagging up. But nothing to see here. People, Please
return to your homes and houses of worship.
Speaker 1 (29:10):
You don't throw a meatball to Miguel Rojas. Guess who
the World champions are? Just understanding that, right, we're dealing
with stuff of a very big priority here. Okay, this
is very low on it.
Speaker 3 (29:22):
Or if PA has it dropped that fly ball on
the track or kyder Phileppa is really the biggest thing
history should so the World Series would have been running
one right there in Toronto now.
Speaker 1 (29:32):
But for the Dodgers tonight, right for a couple of
minutes on this, we've talked about this. They win tonight
again that the post trade deadline, when the Dodgers a
supposed to ruin baseball has not been kind of them.
It's their second win since they ruin baseball. I know
there's a lot of talk the Dodgers.
Speaker 3 (29:47):
Here they are.
Speaker 1 (29:48):
They are now three games, three plus games out of
the best record in the National League. They no longer
have one of the top two records in the National League.
Everything is fine, all right. The Dodgers have won the
last two World Old Series. Yes, it happens. This is
why they call it the dog Days of August. It's
not like the Dodge have been playing five hundred all
a year and can't get it together. I would love
(30:09):
to have the problems of being twenty three games over
five hundred, people thinking oh, I'm really underachieving.
Speaker 3 (30:14):
Right, and the Braves the Dodgers, they've tied the Brakes
spot to avoid the first round of the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (30:20):
Because now because now suddenly the Braves can't beat the Mets.
The Mets win the season series with the Braves for
the first time in nine years, you know, nine years.
Speaker 3 (30:29):
How they say around the National League, those Mets, those
are tough. You know, we're probably not going to be
winning that game Mets come to town. That's the closer
on the aisle. No, probably not gonna happen.
Speaker 1 (30:38):
Mets just had to trade their best four relievers and
now they can't lose, right, That's.
Speaker 3 (30:42):
That's right, because Code with his fifty two eer, you
make him your closer and then secure a game that way.
Speaker 1 (30:49):
But really, I mean it's in the in the fall,
when we get to the playoffs. Yeah, the Dodge will
be vulnerable because you don't have no idea how the
starting pitching is going to go there. Bullpen, he has
closed it out tonight, but he's been dicey. But overall, yeah,
the Dodgers are fine. They're absolutely fine. This is just
a rough patch after being twenty eight games over five hundred. Yes,
(31:10):
oh my goodness, there are twenty three games over now.
The Dodgers are fine. Everything is okay.
Speaker 3 (31:15):
Well, I would say the rough patch has lasted about
a month and a half because since July first.
Speaker 1 (31:20):
But that's the World Series and you start out gangbusters
the next year weeks You're right, Okay, that's gonna happen
the other years with the Dodgers not coming off the
World Championship where we played great but we didn't win
at all, you're still hungry the entirety of the next season.
This is still well, we've won the last two World Series.
We just traded for the best pitcher in baseball.

I think we're okay. So scoobl pitches tonight last five
innings because it was ninety five pitches. Blake Snell is
coming off the injured list and officially is the starter
for Tuesday night. I have no idea who's starting Wednesday,
but I can tell confidently tell you that it's not
Emmitt Sheian not in the majors. He had a short
outing in the miners. He's not coming back up to

pitch once. You're sure about that, I'm very sure.
