(00:23):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Oh everybody, get happy,
Get happy. Oh it's song. Unless you're a Mariners fan,
you're happy, very very excited. Friends are not not feeling
it right now. Let me tell you. The Mariners get
a lead off doubled by Kyle Seeger, and they strand
(00:46):
him in the bottom of the ninth thinning, Jared Kelnick
with a chance to bring in the tying run, he
flies out to end the game. So maybe that statue
of him on Brody Van Wagon and shoulders not going
up tended Seattle and the Mariners lose a game, and
basically this gives a playoff birth to the Yankees, who
(01:08):
all they need is one win in their final two
games and they will be one of the wild cards.
It is a very painful loss for the Mariagers could
have wound up tying the Red Sox be one game
back of the Yankees going into the final two days,
and instead the Mariners lose and now the Mariage and
Blue Jays both the game back of the Red Sox,
who are a game back of the Yankees. That is
(01:29):
that's a loss. That's a game where you're the Mariagers.
You go, you know what, that's a game we had
to have. We have to have this Friday night game
against the bleeping Angels. Okay, we gotta have all three
of these against the Angels. But when you allowed two runs,
this is a game you have to have. You had
to have this one. Well, it's like we always talk
about when teams lose football games, like they gave up
fourteen points or they give up seventeen points. You have
(01:50):
to be able to manufacture more. If you can't scratch
out a second run, I'm sorry, even in front of
the sellout crowd, you deserve nothing. You deserve absolutely, you
deserve all the misery that comes with it. As they
walk sullen back to their cars, oh boy, it is
a big loss by the Mariners. Now, before we get
(02:12):
to our upset special picks of the week in college
football the NFL. Mike and I have four picks coming
your way in a couple of minutes. Uh. You know,
we talked to Jay Glazer a few minutes ago. We
talked about the Bears and and and they're absolute dysfunction.
And Mike, I'm not just picking on your team, but
you need a quarterback intervention like nobody else, right, And uh,
I mean pick pick who's who's doing the intervening though,
(02:35):
Which of the celebrity lunatics off of daytime television would
you choose. I'll bring Thy Pennington with me and he'll
have a bring Thy Pennington build a moat to keep
him apart. We're gonna completely tear down everything you have.
That's what we're gonna do. He's gonna tear down. But
look at the family. Look what they got. Uh Uh.
(02:58):
Matt Naggie says, today we have a game time decision
for our quarterback on Sunday. So could be Andy Dalton,
could be Justin Fields, could be Nick Foles. And then
Andy Dalton said, well, yeah, it's great that they have
confidence in me, but that's kind of what I've been
told since I've been here. I'm the quarterback. This is
why they need an intervention because there has been no
(03:18):
bigger organizational failure than the Bears and how they have
attacked this quarterback situation. Look at the mess they're in
right now because Andy Dalton is hurt, Justin Fields isn't ready,
and Nick Foles is Nick Foles. This is why the
Jets and the Jaguars are gonna wind up being better
in the long run because they drafted their guys and
(03:40):
they know there are guys right we don't. They're gonna
fight to win this job. They want to start, they know,
so we're gonna make them are quarterbacks, and all the
adjustments they're going to have to do is going to
be a fail forward fast kind of situation. Like Randy Mueller,
who follows me on Twitter and I follow on Twitter,
you had that big line. You know they're hoping you
(04:00):
fail forward fast. That's what is happening in New York
and in Jacksonville. These players are failing forward fast. So
they're gonna be ready to play sooner. They did it right.
But you tell me, Justin Fields isn't ready, Jason, did
you see him on Sunny wasn't ready? Yes? You know
whose fault that is. That's the Bear's fault because when
you drafted him, you knew he was your quarterback. You
knew you had to adjust the offense to be built
(04:22):
around his skill set. It's why you drafted Justin Fields.
What did the Bears do instead? No, no, no, we
promised Andy Dalton we'd feel bad about signing and then saying, oh, sorry, Andy,
we got Justin Fields. Sorry, Andy Dalton. That's how the
NFL goes man, that's how it works. But no, no,
they're gonna go through an entire six months of not
giving Justin Fields the reps, not adjusting the offense to
be behind what he does, because it was the same
(04:44):
offense he tried to run that Andy Dalton has been
running for the past three weeks. And that's why it
worked and didn't work, because Justin Fields has a unique
skill set and you build the offense around him, and
they didn't do it. This is all an organizational failure
on the Bears, who are now eeping what they've sown
because of the bow. We're gonna wait on just Field. Wait, wait, wait, yes,
(05:04):
I get it. He's not ready. It's your fault for
not getting him ready. And all that means at the
end of this is you're gonna see a bunch of
guys fired and out of work because the Bears mismanaged
how to deal with the quarterback situation. Once they got
justin Fields. You make him the starter, you give him
the reps, and when he starts and things a little
bit rocky, well you fail forward fast and then you're
(05:25):
ready and you're better off the law run. But instead
the Bears have made an absolute mess of this. They
need a quarterback intervention. Sounds like everything I've been yelling
for what is it four years now in this organization.
But you love Matt nag You say Matt Naggy should
get a contracting Oh yeah, No, I said he might have.
I didn't say he should. Likewise, Ryan Pace, they've had
(05:47):
a couple of hits, mostly Missus and and look, I
I was a firm believer and we said it on
air when we were on draft night when they tried
it up for Rabinsky, and everybody was losing their minds, like,
if that's the guy you decided was your guy, you
put your hips to the center of the table, and
that's fine, right and all the hindsight, look, I thought
Watson should have been the guy. We don't know what
he is right now. We know when he's on the
(06:08):
field he's a hell of a talented player. And obviously
the Patrick Mahomes think, look, other teams could have traded up,
didn't and coming out of college than anybody expect him
to become the wizard that he is. And now you know,
half a billion dollars in contracts plus endorsements, plus part
ownership of the Royals plus I don't know, we keep
doing that all day long. But from Matt Naggy right,
(06:31):
it was a failure. As soon as Justin Fields dropped
into their lap, it became a al right, do we
go this pace? Right? Because we've got a solid team,
assuming the defense is healthy. We're playoff team, right. Last
year playoff team. Whether you liked him or not, they
got there. And so you're thinking, all right, we can
be competitive again. Detroit's in a full rebuilding, got them
(06:51):
this weekend. You've got the Vikings. Captain Kirk has imploded
a number of times. You still have the COVID time
bomb with him that's sitting out there that people are
are nervous about. Mike Zimmer's gone after you know, but
for right now he's playing very well. Davin Dalvin Cook
still banged up. And then the Packers are the Packers,
all their drama. As long as Aaron Rodgers came back,
(07:11):
you knew they'd still be formidable. So now it's the
all right, how do you navigate it? And you went
down the road of installing an offense for Andy Dalton, figuring,
you know, you were gonna save Justin Fields, as my
mom always said, you'd save him for good, and that
Andy Dalton would get this run. And then you transition, well,
guess what, Andy Dalton got hurt. So now any of
(07:32):
the packages you thought you were gonna run just with
to Justin Fields skill set now had to become the
focal point. And as we saw last Sunday, watching as
I did in the Chicago bar here in in Los
Angeles while drinking a beautiful rasp mutant, it was glorious
because you know what, it too helped take some of
(07:52):
the pain away. So thanks thanks for carrying up here.
Yeah know what I had to because after a while
I got tired of seeing highlights and counters for Miles
Garrett was like that was doing like they always do
with strikeout pictures and there's a bunch of dope standing
in the corner with Kay's and it's all right, you
gotta you gotta hold one of these. Why because he's
(08:13):
up the thirteen and you're in that seat. Okay, the
same thing with Miles Garrett piling up sacks, like, hey,
you're the fifth guy here. We only had a four
guys with us, but since we're now going on to
uh bonus time here, you gotta hold this one up
for the half sack. Uh. Justin Fields was not put
in a position to succeed. I still don't think he's ready.
(08:33):
And yes, part of that is the fact that they
didn't train him as number one, but as number two
should have still been learning the offense that they were
trying to run. And when you get called for a
couple of false starts when you're in the shotgun because
you're rocking back and trying to anticipate the play because
you know your offensive line is gonna get you killed,
but you don't trust what's going on. Yeah, you're not
(08:54):
ready to play. That's not on a coach. Some of
the balls that sailed over wide open receivers, uh that
those are not the coach's fault. Those are easy eight
to ten yard throws that you have to make. And
you know what, every other rookie quarterback that has played
this year has done the same. So he's not alone.
He's a great company, but he's got to get those
reps that had he gotten the reps, he'd be better off.
(09:14):
But he hasn't got He still has to be able
to hit an open damn receiver. I get it. I
get I'm not saying he's perfect, but it would be
a lot better. Right now, had buds and blah blah blah.
Nobody here we are going. No Bears fans be sitting around,
but you know we gotta go to Andy Dalton because
justin fields, we we need Andy Dalton. Bill is that No,
it's not gonna happen that way. No, But when you've
(09:36):
been sold that this guy's the savior and people are
buying stained glass with him on there like he's a saint,
I mean, you've got problems. It's like he's a Bears quarterback.
We've seen this. Jake Cutler was pretty good, you know what,
they hated him, and Andy Dalton, I don't know what
he is. He's a serviceable placeholder until Fields is ready
(09:58):
and some of the public momentary. Yes, I would love
to hire a new PR person to lead Matt Naggie
and so many other coaches out before they stay something dumb. Unfortunately,
I don't have that power. I'm here on the radio
and I just have to call it like I see it,
just like Tommy young Dide all those years refereeing matches
(10:19):
between Rick Flair and Dusty Rhodes in the n w A.
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern seven
pm Pacific time for our upset special picks in college
football and the National Football League. Alex tishert hit our music.
We'll kick things off college football, Micha. I'll give you
(10:41):
my two picks. For what's my first one. I'm gonna
take Notre Dame getting to over Cincinnati again. I went
with Notre Dame last week. This is not because they
won last week, but they don't lose games like this
early in the season there at home. Notre Dame has
better wins and a better defense. Their defensive line is terrific.
Cincinnati hasn't looked great. Notre Dame's offense will be able
(11:05):
to do enough and win this game, and all they
gotta do is win. You're a home dog. Yeah, let's
see how for real Cincinnati is. I'll stay in the
Midwest and I'll take Michigan getting three over Wisconsin. This
game is gonna be a rock fight. Both defenses will
play well, but Michigan is gonna keep pounding and eventually
break through with a couple of big plays late. Maybe
(11:26):
it's a big blake corn run. Maybe it's a big
play in the passing game. Graham Mertz isn't gonna win
this game. Michigan will just make a couple more plays
on offense late. All they gotta do is win. All right,
I'm getting three with that, So yeah, give me Notre Dame,
give me Michigan is my upset specials. I love it.
I'm gonna take Louisville getting this seven at wake Forest.
Wake Forest number twenty four wins over Florida State and Virginia,
(11:50):
and we've watched them uh flail about here over the
course of the year. We've seen Louisville common opponent with
the win over Florida State. Also, I shoot out win
over Central Florida. So I'm looking for them to take
care of business and then and then we've got Kansas State.
They're getting eleven and a half Jason against Oklahoma. They
(12:11):
are at home, and they've played Oklahoma well, Uh, the
last beating them outright the last couple of years, big
loss uh four k State last time out at Oklahoma
State year final. But this is a team that can
put up points and looking for them as a three
and one squad to go upset the apple cart of Oklahoma.
(12:32):
We've seen the shakiness of the offense and and Rattler
and they're calling for his backup and all of that fun. Uh,
Oklahoma can still get the win. But plus eleven and
a half, I'll take that. That's pretty pretty generous. The
last one Boston College getting fourteen a half at Clemson.
Who the hell's Clemson to give anybody fourteen and a
half right now? I don't think they're anybody that can
(12:53):
give anybody fourteen and a half or four and a half,
or even if they I like that pick buddy, I
like to go, Buddy, you know there there's a trifective
for you. We'll see how we do. So we'll have
our NFL Upset Special Picks next, and was tonight the
last will ever see of Clayton Kershawn Major League Baseball?
That's next right here. Fox. Be sure to catch live
(13:15):
editions of The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon weekdays

(13:37):
the interesting interactions along the way. We talked to coaches,
we talked to players, We tell you stories. You download it,
you listen to it. I think you like it. Listen

Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast,
Fox Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show with my bas
(13:59):
friend Mike Harmon. Well, we got some stuff on Clayton
Kershaw coming up in a couple minutes. But first, Hey,
we gave you our college football upset Special picks for
this weekend. Let's give you our NFL picks for Sunday
in the Upset Special category. Six and two Excited about
(14:20):
making these two picks. I'll take the Lions getting three
and a half over the Bears because the Bears are
a blank show. Whoever starts a quarterback, it's a bad offense.
Detroit is snake bit, but they've moved the ball. Jared
Golf has played well. Their defense had a big leap
forward last week. I'll take Detroit on the field, but
I'll also take the points. For my second game, I'll
(14:42):
give you the Ravens getting three over Denver. Denver is
just not good. They're not dynamic. They have a lot
of injuries on offense. They're not good enough running the ball.
Their defense is just okay. This is a quintessential. Hey,
we have some talent, but we're gonna kinda be limited there.
They're the limited layoff team that sneaks in as a
wild card against Lamar Jackson. It's gonna be a different world.
(15:05):
I don't even think this is close. It's a reality
check for the Broncos. Ravens win. Wow, look at that
calling for the full on blowout. All right? My two
games real quick, uh Caroline and getting four and a
half against the Dallas Cowboys. I think this defense is
for real. I don't think I'm gonna discount the schedule
nearly as much. Sam Donald played some good football, and
(15:26):
uh give you a little bit of a ninja in
your wide outs. How about Terroris Marshall fourteen targets, ten
catches so far this year. I think he has a
bigger role Touma Hubbard, well, not spectacular. We'll keep the
line moving with McCaffrey out. And then I've got Arizona
getting six points against the Rams, looking for Kyler Murray
and that offense a lot of weapons to deploy to
(15:47):
continue their magic and come away with the outright win
which will be seismic in the National Football League. So
there you go are upset special picks in college football
and the NFL. You can get us up after the
show twitter at how about a Fresca mikeet Swollen Dome
or the best of podcast that goes up on iTunes
in a few minutes wherever you listen to podcasts. You
(16:08):
get it. Now. The Dodgers have just closed out the
Milwaukee Brewers big Grand Slam by Trey Turner. They now
stay in the running to win the NL West, but
now the only way they do it is if by
winning a game on Monday against the Giants in San Francisco,
but a bigger deal tonight in that Clayton Kershaw leaves
(16:29):
this game with an injury in the third inning left
forearm tightness, which is the injury that's kept him out
and kept him to three starts since the beginning of July.
When Kershaw left the game tonight, he kept the ball,
all right. This was not a I'm pissed about coming
out of the games. I'm gonna keep the ball. Normally
give the ball to the manager. I know his future
in the off season has been debated, but what if
(16:51):
this is it for Kershaw? Right Bill Plashka The l
A Times talked about how Kershaw said, Hey, when I'm healthy,
I feel great. When I'm not, it's a real strung goal.
I don't know that this might not be the end
of Clayton Kershaw. I certainly don't expect him to pitch
the rest of the playoffs, because look, you can only
pitch three games between then and now and now here
he is with forearm tightness. Again, I'm wondering if this
(17:14):
is it and he knew this was it, like, this
is it my last season? When I can't do it anymore,
because when you're a proud athlete who has dominated for years,
you don't stick around for a while and say I
could still get guys out. When you're done, you're done.
Clayton Kershaw's back is not getting better. He's got the
forearm injury. I'm wondering if this is gonna be it
for him in Major League baseball. And he kept the ball. Hey,
(17:35):
that's my last ball I ever threw in Major League Baseball,
so I'm keeping it. Really, we talked about potentially leaving
the Dodgers, potentially coming back, But now I think about
the fact that maybe this is the last time Kershaw
threw a ball in Major League baseball. Makes that and
that move to take the ball off the mound with him,
and you know, you have the flashpoint of that's where
(17:55):
his mind is. And I will see, you know, if
a day or two colming down as you get ready
for either the wild card or four h just the
regular full on playoff running series, that maybe calmer heads
prevail and and maybe the forearm injury isn't serious enough
to to keep him out all together, and and maybe
there's hope that he can still find them out this postseason,
(18:17):
but certainly in the moment. Yeah, that's the look of
a guy that after all these appearances, so many innings.
I mean, you look at over twenty four hundred career
regular season innings, hundred eighty five wins, eighty four losses
in three seventy five starts that that maybe father time
has caught up between the forearm, the back eotomy's and
(18:39):
he's got kids, you know, to go and run around
and chase that that maybe he's decided and come to
grips with it. I did my rehab. I battled back,
and that's that's I left it on the field. Yeah,
because if I if he thought he could be healthy,
he would stick around, or he would sign for a
couple of years. But if he's gonna have a year
where I can't make more than a handful of arts,
(19:00):
those guys don't do it right. I'm done. I'm playing
at a high lightl one. I feel like I'm slipping
a bit. That's it, especially health wise. I really think
this scenario is taking over in my brain. It really is.
