Greetings, Welcome inside final hour tonight The Jason Smith Show
with my bes friend Mike Harmon. Well dressed hobot. Now
we'll get to the Bryson d Chambeau story in a
couple of seconds, which I love when crazy golf stories
are the number one stories of the day. But just
a little bit more on the Derek Jeter conversation. We

had a few minutes ago where Yankee fans won Aaron
Boon fired after tonight, uh mismanaging Garrett Coles situation. And
we've talked about this even a year ago, like, Hey,
I wonder how fast Derek Jeter would say yes if
the Yankees called him to manage the team. And and
I don't know that because I think he would say
yes right away and to push this story a little
(01:11):
bit further. I don't even know that you would need
to talk to Jeter and say, hey, we're gonna sign
you to be our manager full time. Like you could
even just say come in and help us and manage
the rest of this season. And if the Yankees win, great,
If not, Jeter came in and helped the Yankees for halfyear.
(01:31):
He's not gonna damage his legacy for anything. But just
think about how much just changing a manager can do
for a team. Right. Look at the Phillies who Rob
Thompson won three NL East and okay, Rob Thompson's a
pretty good manager. Well, the Philly started out crappy, they
got rid of him. And look at where Mattingly has
the team, right, I was Don Mattingly likely doing things

that is dad that are crazy new at Oh my goodness,
like Kyle Schwarber is gonna hit right handed.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
I didn't know that was gonna work.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
Wow, look at what's happening. No, but overall, whatever it
was that got the player's attention, and the Phillies are
going to catch the Braves right. They're playing incredibly well.
They're playing up to their talent level. Sometimes just changing
a manager changes the energy and put and pushes things forward. Right.
The Mets needed to do it way earlier in the
season than they did. They waited till the season was

over to fire. Carlsman's Okay, great, you do it. After
the twelve game losing streak as bad as it was
last year, he couldn't pull them out of it. Twelve
game this is when you do it. But they didn't
do it fast enough. If Jeter came in to manage
a team the rest of this year, all of a sudden,
he takes the pressure off of everybody on the team.
Nobody is feeling it. Everybody wants to play for him.

Nobody would question anything Jeter would have to say. He
would come in right away. And the jolt of electricity
that the Yankees would get from bringing Jeter in would
be immense. And if the Yankees play well, and they
play well down the stretch, they win the Al East,
they come back and far to play. Hey, Derek, jud
you want to let's talk about doing it full time.
But I think if you were approached Jeter and said, hey,

the rest of this year, what can you come do
this for two and a half months, right, or a
little bit over two months and get us where we
need to go. If you don't, hey it didn't work,
and and and we're we'll move on. Thanks for coming
in and helping, and we can talk about your two
month stretch managing the team. You scratch that itch, you
know what it's like to manage the team, and you
go right into imagine the Yankees with and you leave
without doing damage to your legacy. Like, I think that's

how you would probably approach it with Jeter and say,
rest of this year, come in and do it. I
can't see him saying no.

Well, it's a bit of a free spin, right, the
toxicity of the current state of things when you look
at both Boone and Cashman, because Cashman's a guy that
just seems to have the blank check to keep doing
what he's gonna do every year. Oh yeah, I mean
I think we've asked John Paul Morosi for about eight
straight years, like, are they ever actually gonna look to

move on from him? I mean those you know, the
the Core four and Jeter and all those guys. That's
thirty years ago.

Okay, that's a long time.

That's a long time in the past. Yeah, for Jeter,
it's a bit of a free spin. Obviously at his
odd I guess from a business perspective, they got the
job done when he was down with the Marlins, and
he got one playoff berth and all of that. But
the biggest thing is when we look at where at right,
the Mets take a bit of oxygen. The Knicks winning

gets everybody thirsty for a little more success. So the
the visceral reaction to a loss like tonight. In the
end you get after Boon, it's like your team scored
no runs, man, Like, what what do you want? You
know your offense failed. But the problem is if you
look in the rear view mirror, just to do a

lane change, you realize how hot the Red Sox are
right now, right eleven in a row, and a lot
of their young players rounding back into form. And Tampa's
not going anywhere, I think selfishly and and maybe tempting
the fates, the baseball gods. When camin Aro got hit
the other night, they go, okay, maybe that gives it. No,

he's back in the line. I've been ready to go.
He's got no relief there either. Now he's a butcher
in the field, but he more than makes up for
it in the plate.

Now. Uh again, we'll see, but I guarantee you, I
guarantee you that's something that he would do.

I didn't think that Bryson d. Chambeau would be the
number one sports topic of the day. And I'm always
stunned when social media is agog over over something that's unexpected.
But what happened today during the Open Championship. I love when.
I love so much, Mike. I love so much when
odd golf rules in odd golf situations or stories because

there's so much fun because I'm recovering them in a
big way in the nineties, you know, with ESPN and
into when I was behind the camera and talking about this,
and when when really the birth of all the crazy
rule changes came about. Because now that we have social
media and it's easy to contact people, Yeah, the crazy

golf rules, we get fewer stories about them, But man,
did we get a great one today where des Chambeau,
who's been one of the best players on tour the
last few years and the big villain of the PGA
Tour and hero of the Live Golf Tour, got a
two stroke penalty for allegedly improving his lie in the
tall grass before his second shot on the fifth hole,
(06:26):
two stroke penalty, So he ends the day now four
back instead of where he could have been two back
going into this weekend. So upset him that he got
a two stroke penalty. He initially implied that maybe he
won't play Saturday. Now it looks like cooler heads have
prevailed a statement on social media saying, hey, this happened,
I'm past it. I'm ready to go for the weekend.
Now there is a lot of golf left one of
(06:47):
my dad's favorite phrases, A lot of golf left. So
he's got two days to make it up. Right now.
If he loses by two strokes or a stroke, boy,
is that gonna be fun. But to get into this,
what happened with d Chambeau. He hits a shot that
goes way right right, and he actually hits a provisional
shot in case he couldn't find his ball right. So

now he hits provisional shot, goes out to find a
second ball and looking in an area where he thought
the ball was because there's a lot of tall grass,
and d Chambeau goes in there and he starts stomping
around and because of that, he gets a two stroke
penalty because the officials ruled that he was trying to
improve his lie. He was trying to whether you know,
(07:32):
there's many different things in improving your life falls under.
There's building a stance, there's manufacturing stance, there's improving your lie.
And they said he was improving his lie. And I
can't believe there's one person that's defending him saying that
there's no reason why they would do this. I mean,
I really, anybody that's ever seen a golf tournament before
knows that d Chambeau walked into that grass and starts

stomping around, hoping that when I find the ball, the
grass is down on the ground. I've stumped it down
enough so when I take a swing, I don't catch
the grass on my backswing or my follow through. That's
the I mean, watch him walk in. Nobody walks that way.
You're supposed to walk in very gingerly, so you don't
disturb the ball. You know, the ball doesn't move, you
don't disturb anything. That's how you do it. But he
(08:16):
goes in. I'm just stomping around because I'm trying to
flatten the grass. What is he doing? He's trying to
improve his lie. Now you can talk about the craziness
of the rules of golf and say I agree with
this or I disagree with this. No, and I get
that that's a conversation, but really, don't think he was
trying to improve his life. I can't Again, I can't
believe the number of people, even with check marks, that
are saying, yeah, I mean, how do you know what

he's trying to do? Oh, come on, man, the guy.
The guy is just one step short of pulling out
a weat whacker, trying to get rid of all of
the trying to get rid of all the grass. Right
if if he had, if he had a lighter on him,
he would have just lit that lighter, just burned that
grass in the ground. Oh, there's the ball right there,
I'm gonna hit it. Like he obviously is stomping around
like he is a WWE wrestler at the beginning of

a match, just trying to create a lot of sound
and a lot of fury. I'm stopping around here like
he absolutely is doing that. I can't believe anybody is
defending him on this.

Well, I mean, the Oba Femi strut. You can google it.
Smith you'll appreciate it. His long strut to the the
ring really fits this appropriately. Look, des Chambeau, I mean
we watched the footage a million times. Gets in, takes
a couple of big steps around, then does the all right,
let me look at my vantage point and kind of

takes a couple of baby steps back and kind of
leaning back, and then you get the the fescue. The
word of the week is fescue, gets that bent. Fescue
and swale are my two favorite words. The swale has
not been used enough this this tournament. Fescue has been
used a lot. Are you referring to the famous racehorse swale?

Uh no, that's how they they Well, I could have
been talking about Sweal. Well, come on, too soon on sweal?
Speaker 3 (09:55):
Come on man, yeah, yeah, come on, well yeah, I
mean I I just love the the verbiage used by
the official when he had to meet the media. It's like,
even if accidental, as we believe it was in this case,
like no, no, no, no, no, you don't buy that for
a second. No, you don't try to say that you
saw what he did. You had the animated discussion that

everybody's now put in Mystery Science Theater three thousand commentary too,
which is kind of funny. But even if it's unintentional,
this is your attempt to and doesn't work to improve
your lieven even a little bit. And what happens after
you actually take the shot doesn't matter, right, It's all

what happens and the proceedings to get to there. He
was trying to argue that the club vertically cleared, that
it's not part of the swing. He's like, no, but
I think everybody that, and we talk about sports and
the sanctity of rules and interpretations whatever. Nobody's bigger than
this than rap.

Hockey guy might be second, maybe soccer guys there, but
certainly golf and the rules and etiquette of golf. I mean,
how many comedies have been made about the etiquette of
golf and a body that's a rule? Really, that's no,
like all of that stuff, the fact that you know,
the quiet around the tea box and and everything else,

like no, no, no, it's a there's a rule, there's an etiquette,
there's whatever. And here Deschambeau clearly like an easy guy
that is polarizing. Whether you loved or hated live here.
He is competing in the final major of the year
and he made a major mistake.

Now, when you go back, I want to just say this,
first of all, when you said fescue, were you doing
that for famed Kansas City personality Bob Fesco.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
He's a friend of Ben Mallards. Nicely done. Yeah, that
was well done. That is Yeah, that is great radio
knowledge right there. Yeah, there's not enough thing. There's not
enough things that you can get that sound like fescue.
But you can get Bob Fesco in uh.

This this history of crazy golf rules goes way back
and it's and it's fun. Like again, I remember going
back to a tournament. I want to say it was
Craig Stadler who had to get a penalty because there
was a shot he had to take and it was
like under a tree. So he put down a towel

so he could just kneel on it to keep his
pants clean to take a shot. And somebody called in
from home this is how it used to work. People
watching the broadcast. Hey, that's building a stance or manufacturing
a stance. Can't do it. And he had a penalty
just to keep his pant didn't help him with the shot.
I don't want to keep my pants clean. Nope, nope,
that's helping you building a shot. Right. What about the
guy fifteen years ago who called in during the Masters

saying you're using manufactured bird sound effects? Oh, come on, man,
you're nuts. That's not happening here. Get too much conspiracy theory.
Oh no, we actually are using uh yeah, manufactured sound effects. Yeah,
the whipper will is not native to the Greater Augusta areas. Like,
these rules are just insane, But I kind of liked
that the average person could see something going going on

in a sport and make a phone call and go, heyay,
you can't do this, Hey can't do I mean now,
Royal and Ancient they're on it, right, they were on it.
With d Schambau stopping around. That's going to need somebody
to call in. But I kind of like that. I
kind of feel like, if you know you, we could
do that for the NBA Playoffs, maybe things would turn
out a little bit differently, and maybe the Knicks would
have swept because Webby would have fouled out of all
the NBA Finals games that could have happened, Right, you

have a lot of you got a lot of NBA
comparisons here because people are losing their minds on social
media that John Rahm didn't get a penalty for throwing
his club, but yet d Chambau got this. This takes
me back to the NBA Finals where it was like,
how does Wemby not get a flagrant? He's trying to
kick and tear oh Gianner Nobi's knee. He doesn't get it,

but kat gets a gets a foul for this. They
overturned that. Like, I feel like we're just rolling from
one from refereeing controversy to another. We'll get back to
soccer on Sunday. How is this a penalty? How is
this not a penalty? How is this a red card?
How is this not a red card? How is throwing
your club not a penalty? You get a warning? How
is this a two stro penalty for d chambell I

dig that.

Yeah. Stadler at the UH at Torrey Pines was disqualified
because he signed an incorrect scorecard. He was building a
stance to get to that penalty, so you had that.
I think we should do this like American Idol, especially
in the early years. I'll call for your favorite guy
right now, so whenever there's a TV review of any

call var soccer, we go to the tape, but we
go to New York for the NBA. You can call
in and sway the outcome. No, right, it's like it's
partly the guy in the booth, but your audience at
home helps to defy the call. Right, was it not?

was great because I let a super cut of a
bunch of videos run after the initial story and watching
it and look, d Chambeau was back out on the

be ready and trying to make his run. Here, just
a couple of shots off the lead, but you know,
it's just the the breakdown, particularly of the Bridge broadcast,
were the best. It's like the sanctity of the game.
Oh yeah, yeah, they would be derelict in their duties.

Got administer a two stroke penalty. It's quite obvious to
anyone what he was trying to do, and a couple
of guys came close to incriminated himselves on friendly routes
with their buddies and stop short of.

hold off a really bad Seattle team. But let's not

Yeah, I mean that defense. Let me tell you, yeah,
well it's okay.

I mean it's it's okay because quite honestly, these are
the headlines we've talked about it. These are the headlines
the WNBA needs. These are the headlines that Caitlyn Clark
needs because you know, you look at her numbers and
she's having a nice season right nineteen and seven and four.
But you know, when you take a look at where
her numbers are and her wow factor is compared to
(17:50):
other players in the league, it's not quite what we
expected it to be. Right now, Caitlyn Clark has come
in to the league and proven right away that she's
one of the best players. Right Like, you can have
the conversation as to who the best player is, and
you can have a three or four different opinions, and
I get that, but she's come in as the biggest star.
There's no question to who the biggest star in the
(18:11):
WNBA is and if you're the biggest star, this is
the one thing that I will say, Will you know
what could potentially push Caitlin Clark's star power down a
bit and and push her down for being a big star,
is that she's playing terrific, right, But you know what,
Paige Beckers is playing terrific. Asia Wilson has eleven MVPs.
Speaker 3 (18:33):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (18:34):
You know, you have lots of players in the league
that are playing really well, right Angel Reese and her
and her rebound still have her up at the top
of list breaking all the rebounds wrecords, Like they have
a lot of really good players who are putting up.
Olivia Miles is making a big run over the course
of this past year. If Caitlin Clark's going to stay
this player, and it's weird to say, but she's got
(18:56):
to keep doing and start doing more miraculous Kate and
Clark type things, because that's the one thing that's gonna
take say, Okay, great, yeah, do we really need to
go see Caitlyn Clark play, because eventually, if she's just
this nineteen and eight player that is that is pretty good.
But she loses the the sexiness of the logo threes

and the behind the back passes and and and what
she's able to do on the court that made her
stand out so much at Iowa coming into the league,
where she was going to turn the league on its ear,
Like that's the one thing that's gonna really hurt her start.
It's not gonna be this conversation about is she being treated,
how she's being treated by the rest of the league
and officials and all that kind of stuff. But if
she just stays this really good player, okay, eventually people
(19:43):
are gonna say Kaitlyn Clark doesn't need to be musty anymore,
Like like the clock is ticking, and this is her
third year in the league, and yes, she missed almost
all of last year with a bad groin injury and
that absolutely sucked. But we're only people are only gonna
stick around waiting on Caitlyn Clark for song long before
they move on. And the W is in a moment
right now where everybody's paying attention to what they're doing.

They're part of the public consciousness and I don't know
that that's going anywhere, but for Caitlin Clark, Yeah, we
need to see more stuff like tonight. And I get
that that's unfair to put on her, but she came
into the league and everybody expected we're gonna get the
Caitlin Clark that we saw at Iowa. We have not
gotten that Caitlin Clark. We've gotten glimpses of it, but
after the newness of it is wearing off. If she

just settles into being a top ten WNBA player, guess what, well, Okay,
who's new now. Let let's let's take a look and
see what maybe now Page Beckers is more of a
must watch player when Juju Watkins eventually enters the WNBA
whatever it's going to be. But the clock is kind
of ticking on Caitlin Clark to give us something spectacular
and do it a little bit more regularly, and like Knights,
(20:49):
like tonight, There's got to be some nights where the
fever just decided, you know what, this is a Caitlyn Knight.
And is this going to be something that is great
for our development as a team. No, but as a
great for the WNBA where thinking promote it. Here's another
forty five point night from Kaitlyn Clark. Here's a fifty
point night from Kaitlyn Clark, because that's what's gonna keep
going the league is when she has Knights like tonight.

And I'm not saying you got to change your team
entirely to get to where it's at, but this is
kind of stuff that Caitlyn Clark's got to do if
you're gonna keep the growth of this league going.
Speaker 3 (21:19):
Yeah, I mean, you got other star power, but certainly
we've seen the television ratings and the throughput is so
much greater when she's on the court. The hard part
is this was oftentimes the player she was at iow
and I don't I don't mean the hey rain, making
threes all the time. The other stuff was always there
(21:39):
in route to the winning but it doesn't make highlight reels. Right,
the drawing two defenders and a bounce past to the
middle of the lane for a wide open layup. Nobody
cares about that. Yeah, you and me and the nerds,
So you know, it's it's that kind of thing. And
unfortunately to Caitlin Clark, everybody's like, why can't she hit
fifty from three point? She was automatic college, I don't know,

because they run at her, they hit her, they badger her,
and look, as long as the rules are what you
are and you're gonna allow it's like defensive backs and
whatever else you're gonna take as much as the officiating
is gonna allow you to go. Wait, we could play
physical tonight game on, you know, and go from there.
So for Caitlin Clark, yeah, it is a running clock,

you know. Tonight it should be noted that seventeen of
her points came from the fall line, so clearly that
worked by the Congress people and all of the outrage
on social media, and maybe while she didn't take any
interviews or didn't have her phone with her, it seen
when she was chipping Engelbert and the folks there at
(22:45):
the top brass at the WNBA. Maybe took the notice going, hey, guys,
we're getting a lot about the officiating. Because remember we
talked you and I have talked about this a lot, right,
because it's not just Caitlyn Clark that this has been about.
How much postgame interviews have we cited in the last
month when we've talked about the WNBA, you know, usually
(23:07):
with Clark as a centerpiece, but postgame interviews, Yeah, yeah,
you guys got a gritty win. It's like, yeah, the
referees don't know what they're doing. You go and find
about eight different women that have done that and made
that the first point they make at the end of
a game. Yeah, we had to fight through it, and
the referees they're just not good. So it's you know,
an epidemic there. But certainly I get your point with
(23:31):
Caitlin Clark. You need some of these fireworks nights where
it's all about positivity, right, and the best of what
you expect from Caitlin Clark. And you know, for Page Beckers,
she's had the glory of coming in in the shadow
that Caitlyn Clark casts and like none of that noise
filters down to her and how players really feel and
(23:53):
that's between them, their maker and you know, their best
friends and therapists, because we haven't seen a lot of
it on social except when she really gets into it
with you know, an angel rese or someone of that nature,
or Alsta Thomas takes it to the.

is this real? Is a Tom Brady slapped Logan Paul? Like,
that's not Tom Brady? Now? That happened, and after it,
Tom Brady talked about potentially getting in the WWE and
having a match against Logan Paul. Right now, this feud
has been going on on social media for a while.
The Flag football game, Brady had a little fun with

Logan Paul. And I get that Tom Brady is in
a place in his life because it's obvious to see
where he is still looking how to replace the competitiveness
that he felt on the football field. He hasn't found that, right.
Michael Jordan took him forever to try to where can
I Where can I find the competitiveness that I've had
on the basketball court now that I can't play anymore.

And look at what his post game career doing a
whole bunch of different things, right.

And now he's the greatest race car owner in history.

Yeah, sure, Kobe Bryant found the way right right, a
venture capitalist. I'm winning an oscar, I'm pumping women's basketball.
But Tom Brady has left the NFL and it's been okay.
I got TB twelve, I have my career as an
analyst with Fox. I am also part owner of the Raiders, right,

I'm doing all of these different things. I want to
play flag football, I wanted to, and now it's oh,
I want to get into the WWE. Like. He's clearly
trying to find a way to satiate that desire for
competition that he hasn't had, And I get it. But wow, man,
Tom Braid, sometimes the rules are just different for the
greatest of all time Gronk and the WWE. Great goes

along with his personality Gronk one of the best tight
ends we have ever seen, but goes along with that
being ww that was fun. Tom Brady the WWE. Really,
I don't think that's gonna land like he thinks it will,
or like many people oh and see Tom Brady ww A.
I don't think it's gonna land that way. I think
if you the minute you see Brady in the ring
with Logan Paul, you're gonna go this is the greatest

quarterback of all time who is now wrestling. Like I I,
I don't think that's gonna be a great optic. I
don't care what kind of outfit Brady wears, whether he
wears a TB twelve outfit or his old Patriots jersey.
I just I don't think that that's going to land
like he thinks it's going to And like a lot
of people think you're gonna look at that and go,
oh man, you're you're the greatest of all time. Man,

you can't be doing this. You can't be doing not
that it's about wrestling about it, but it's just when
you're the greatest of all time and stuff like, you
have to move on and and keep that grace and
and and keep the impact that I'm gonna do different things,
gonna rate, I'm gonna use my money to do a
lot of different things. And instead it's you're now trading
shots with Logan Paul, Like, really, that's where you are.

You're trading shots with Logan Paul, a guy who is
a self made, a guy from nowhere that just decides
I'm gonna be big on YouTube. And now this is
what you're doing. And you're not wrestling the Undertaker. You're
not you're not wrestling, uh, Dwayne Johnson. You're now trading
shots with Logan Paul in the ring. Like, I don't
think that that's gonna be an optic that's gonna make

people say, boy that Tom Brady man, I love that.
Now I think it's gonna quite the opposite.

we'll get to the Bryson d Chambeau story in a
couple of seconds, which I love when crazy golf stories
are the number one stories of the day. But just
a little bit more on the Derek Jeter conversation. We

had a few minutes ago where Yankee fans won Aaron
Boon fired after tonight, uh mismanaging Garrett Coles situation. And
we've talked about this even a year ago, like, Hey,
I wonder how fast Derek Jeter would say yes if
the Yankees called him to manage the team. And and
I don't know that because I think he would say
yes right away and to push this story a little
(01:11):
bit further. I don't even know that you would need
to talk to Jeter and say, hey, we're gonna sign
you to be our manager full time. Like you could
even just say come in and help us and manage
the rest of this season. And if the Yankees win, great,
If not, Jeter came in and helped the Yankees for halfyear.
(01:31):
He's not gonna damage his legacy for anything. But just
think about how much just changing a manager can do
for a team. Right. Look at the Phillies who Rob
Thompson won three NL East and okay, Rob Thompson's a
pretty good manager. Well, the Philly started out crappy, they
got rid of him. And look at where Mattingly has
the team, right, I was Don Mattingly likely doing things
(01:53):
that is dad that are crazy new at Oh my goodness,
like Kyle Schwarber is gonna hit right handed.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
I didn't know that was gonna work.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
Wow, look at what's happening. No, but overall, whatever it
was that got the player's attention, and the Phillies are
going to catch the Braves right. They're playing incredibly well.
They're playing up to their talent level. Sometimes just changing
a manager changes the energy and put and pushes things forward. Right.
The Mets needed to do it way earlier in the
season than they did. They waited till the season was
(02:19):
over to fire. Carlsman's Okay, great, you do it. After
the twelve game losing streak as bad as it was
last year, he couldn't pull them out of it. Twelve
game this is when you do it. But they didn't
do it fast enough. If Jeter came in to manage
a team the rest of this year, all of a sudden,
he takes the pressure off of everybody on the team.
Nobody is feeling it. Everybody wants to play for him.
(02:40):
Nobody would question anything Jeter would have to say. He
would come in right away. And the jolt of electricity
that the Yankees would get from bringing Jeter in would
be immense. And if the Yankees play well, and they
play well down the stretch, they win the Al East,
they come back and far to play. Hey, Derek, jud
you want to let's talk about doing it full time.
But I think if you were approached Jeter and said, hey,

the rest of this year, what can you come do
this for two and a half months, right, or a
little bit over two months and get us where we
need to go. If you don't, hey it didn't work,
and and and we're we'll move on. Thanks for coming
in and helping, and we can talk about your two
month stretch managing the team. You scratch that itch, you
know what it's like to manage the team, and you
go right into imagine the Yankees with and you leave
without doing damage to your legacy. Like, I think that's
(03:24):
how you would probably approach it with Jeter and say,
rest of this year, come in and do it. I
can't see him saying no.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
Well, it's a bit of a free spin, right, the
toxicity of the current state of things when you look
at both Boone and Cashman, because Cashman's a guy that
just seems to have the blank check to keep doing
what he's gonna do every year. Oh yeah, I mean
I think we've asked John Paul Morosi for about eight
straight years, like, are they ever actually gonna look to

move on from him? I mean those you know, the
the Core four and Jeter and all those guys. That's
thirty years ago.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
Okay, that's a long time.
Speaker 3 (04:01):
That's a long time in the past. Yeah, for Jeter,
it's a bit of a free spin. Obviously at his
odd I guess from a business perspective, they got the
job done when he was down with the Marlins, and
he got one playoff berth and all of that. But
the biggest thing is when we look at where at right,
the Mets take a bit of oxygen. The Knicks winning
(04:22):
gets everybody thirsty for a little more success. So the
the visceral reaction to a loss like tonight. In the
end you get after Boon, it's like your team scored
no runs, man, Like, what what do you want? You
know your offense failed. But the problem is if you
look in the rear view mirror, just to do a
(04:42):
lane change, you realize how hot the Red Sox are
right now, right eleven in a row, and a lot
of their young players rounding back into form. And Tampa's
not going anywhere, I think selfishly and and maybe tempting
the fates, the baseball gods. When camin Aro got hit
the other night, they go, okay, maybe that gives it. No,
(05:05):
he's back in the line. I've been ready to go.
He's got no relief there either. Now he's a butcher
in the field, but he more than makes up for
it in the plate.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
Now. Uh again, we'll see, but I guarantee you, I
guarantee you that's something that he would do.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
Now.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
I didn't think that Bryson d. Chambeau would be the
number one sports topic of the day. And I'm always
stunned when social media is agog over over something that's unexpected.
But what happened today during the Open Championship. I love when.
I love so much, Mike. I love so much when
odd golf rules in odd golf situations or stories because
(05:43):
there's so much fun because I'm recovering them in a
big way in the nineties, you know, with ESPN and
into when I was behind the camera and talking about this,
and when when really the birth of all the crazy
rule changes came about. Because now that we have social
media and it's easy to contact people, Yeah, the crazy
(06:03):
golf rules, we get fewer stories about them, But man,
did we get a great one today where des Chambeau,
who's been one of the best players on tour the
last few years and the big villain of the PGA
Tour and hero of the Live Golf Tour, got a
two stroke penalty for allegedly improving his lie in the
tall grass before his second shot on the fifth hole,
(06:26):
two stroke penalty, So he ends the day now four
back instead of where he could have been two back
going into this weekend. So upset him that he got
a two stroke penalty. He initially implied that maybe he
won't play Saturday. Now it looks like cooler heads have
prevailed a statement on social media saying, hey, this happened,
I'm past it. I'm ready to go for the weekend.
Now there is a lot of golf left one of
(06:47):
my dad's favorite phrases, A lot of golf left. So
he's got two days to make it up. Right now.
If he loses by two strokes or a stroke, boy,
is that gonna be fun. But to get into this,
what happened with d Chambeau. He hits a shot that
goes way right right, and he actually hits a provisional
shot in case he couldn't find his ball right. So
(07:10):
now he hits provisional shot, goes out to find a
second ball and looking in an area where he thought
the ball was because there's a lot of tall grass,
and d Chambeau goes in there and he starts stomping
around and because of that, he gets a two stroke
penalty because the officials ruled that he was trying to
improve his lie. He was trying to whether you know,
(07:32):
there's many different things in improving your life falls under.
There's building a stance, there's manufacturing stance, there's improving your lie.
And they said he was improving his lie. And I
can't believe there's one person that's defending him saying that
there's no reason why they would do this. I mean,
I really, anybody that's ever seen a golf tournament before
knows that d Chambeau walked into that grass and starts
(07:54):
stomping around, hoping that when I find the ball, the
grass is down on the ground. I've stumped it down
enough so when I take a swing, I don't catch
the grass on my backswing or my follow through. That's
the I mean, watch him walk in. Nobody walks that way.
You're supposed to walk in very gingerly, so you don't
disturb the ball. You know, the ball doesn't move, you
don't disturb anything. That's how you do it. But he
(08:16):
goes in. I'm just stomping around because I'm trying to
flatten the grass. What is he doing? He's trying to
improve his lie. Now you can talk about the craziness
of the rules of golf and say I agree with
this or I disagree with this. No, and I get
that that's a conversation, but really, don't think he was
trying to improve his life. I can't Again, I can't
believe the number of people, even with check marks, that
are saying, yeah, I mean, how do you know what
(08:37):
he's trying to do? Oh, come on, man, the guy.
The guy is just one step short of pulling out
a weat whacker, trying to get rid of all of
the trying to get rid of all the grass. Right
if if he had, if he had a lighter on him,
he would have just lit that lighter, just burned that
grass in the ground. Oh, there's the ball right there,
I'm gonna hit it. Like he obviously is stomping around
like he is a WWE wrestler at the beginning of
(08:58):
a match, just trying to create a lot of sound
and a lot of fury. I'm stopping around here like
he absolutely is doing that. I can't believe anybody is
defending him on this.
Speaker 3 (09:07):
Well, I mean, the Oba Femi strut. You can google it.
Smith you'll appreciate it. His long strut to the the
ring really fits this appropriately. Look, des Chambeau, I mean
we watched the footage a million times. Gets in, takes
a couple of big steps around, then does the all right,
let me look at my vantage point and kind of
(09:29):
takes a couple of baby steps back and kind of
leaning back, and then you get the the fescue. The
word of the week is fescue, gets that bent. Fescue
and swale are my two favorite words. The swale has
not been used enough this this tournament. Fescue has been
used a lot. Are you referring to the famous racehorse swale?
Speaker 1 (09:49):
Uh no, that's how they they Well, I could have
been talking about Sweal. Well, come on, too soon on sweal?
Speaker 3 (09:55):
Come on man, yeah, yeah, come on, well yeah, I
mean I I just love the the verbiage used by
the official when he had to meet the media. It's like,
even if accidental, as we believe it was in this case,
like no, no, no, no, no, you don't buy that for
a second. No, you don't try to say that you
saw what he did. You had the animated discussion that

everybody's now put in Mystery Science Theater three thousand commentary too,
which is kind of funny. But even if it's unintentional,
this is your attempt to and doesn't work to improve
your lieven even a little bit. And what happens after
you actually take the shot doesn't matter, right, It's all
(10:39):
what happens and the proceedings to get to there. He
was trying to argue that the club vertically cleared, that
it's not part of the swing. He's like, no, but
I think everybody that, and we talk about sports and
the sanctity of rules and interpretations whatever. Nobody's bigger than
this than rap.

Hockey guy might be second, maybe soccer guys there, but
certainly golf and the rules and etiquette of golf. I mean,
how many comedies have been made about the etiquette of
golf and a body that's a rule? Really, that's no,
like all of that stuff, the fact that you know,
the quiet around the tea box and and everything else,
(11:25):
like no, no, no, it's a there's a rule, there's an etiquette,
there's whatever. And here Deschambeau clearly like an easy guy
that is polarizing. Whether you loved or hated live here.
He is competing in the final major of the year
and he made a major mistake.
Speaker 1 (11:44):
Now, when you go back, I want to just say this,
first of all, when you said fescue, were you doing
that for famed Kansas City personality Bob Fesco.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
He's a friend of Ben Mallards. Nicely done. Yeah, that
was well done. That is Yeah, that is great radio
knowledge right there. Yeah, there's not enough thing. There's not
enough things that you can get that sound like fescue.
But you can get Bob Fesco in uh.

This this history of crazy golf rules goes way back
and it's and it's fun. Like again, I remember going
back to a tournament. I want to say it was
Craig Stadler who had to get a penalty because there
was a shot he had to take and it was
like under a tree. So he put down a towel

so he could just kneel on it to keep his
pants clean to take a shot. And somebody called in
from home this is how it used to work. People
watching the broadcast. Hey, that's building a stance or manufacturing
a stance. Can't do it. And he had a penalty
just to keep his pant didn't help him with the shot.
I don't want to keep my pants clean. Nope, nope,
that's helping you building a shot. Right. What about the
guy fifteen years ago who called in during the Masters
(12:55):
saying you're using manufactured bird sound effects? Oh, come on, man,
you're nuts. That's not happening here. Get too much conspiracy theory.
Oh no, we actually are using uh yeah, manufactured sound effects. Yeah,
the whipper will is not native to the Greater Augusta areas. Like,
these rules are just insane, But I kind of liked
that the average person could see something going going on
(13:17):
in a sport and make a phone call and go, heyay,
you can't do this, Hey can't do I mean now,
Royal and Ancient they're on it, right, they were on it.
With d Schambau stopping around. That's going to need somebody
to call in. But I kind of like that. I
kind of feel like, if you know you, we could
do that for the NBA Playoffs, maybe things would turn
out a little bit differently, and maybe the Knicks would
have swept because Webby would have fouled out of all
the NBA Finals games that could have happened, Right, you
(13:40):
have a lot of you got a lot of NBA
comparisons here because people are losing their minds on social
media that John Rahm didn't get a penalty for throwing
his club, but yet d Chambau got this. This takes
me back to the NBA Finals where it was like,
how does Wemby not get a flagrant? He's trying to
kick and tear oh Gianner Nobi's knee. He doesn't get it,

but kat gets a gets a foul for this. They
overturned that. Like, I feel like we're just rolling from
one from refereeing controversy to another. We'll get back to
soccer on Sunday. How is this a penalty? How is
this not a penalty? How is this a red card?
How is this not a red card? How is throwing
your club not a penalty? You get a warning? How
is this a two stro penalty for d chambell I
(14:21):
dig that.

Yeah. Stadler at the UH at Torrey Pines was disqualified
because he signed an incorrect scorecard. He was building a
stance to get to that penalty, so you had that.
I think we should do this like American Idol, especially
in the early years. I'll call for your favorite guy
right now, so whenever there's a TV review of any

call var soccer, we go to the tape, but we
go to New York for the NBA. You can call
in and sway the outcome. No, right, it's like it's
partly the guy in the booth, but your audience at
home helps to defy the call. Right, was it not?
By the benefit of our ninety seven reviews, close ups, right, enhance,

enhance and everything that we've joked about forever. But this
was great because I let a super cut of a
bunch of videos run after the initial story and watching
it and look, d Chambeau was back out on the
links this evening ten, ten thirty at night, England time,

you know, hitting balls deep into the night, so he'll
be ready and trying to make his run. Here, just
a couple of shots off the lead, but you know,
it's just the the breakdown, particularly of the Bridge broadcast,
were the best. It's like the sanctity of the game.
Oh yeah, yeah, they would be derelict in their duties.

Got administer a two stroke penalty. It's quite obvious to
anyone what he was trying to do, and a couple
of guys came close to incriminated himselves on friendly routes
with their buddies and stop short of.

I mean it's it's okay because quite honestly, these are
the headlines we've talked about it. These are the headlines
the WNBA needs. These are the headlines that Caitlyn Clark
needs because you know, you look at her numbers and
she's having a nice season right nineteen and seven and four.
But you know, when you take a look at where
her numbers are and her wow factor is compared to

other players in the league, it's not quite what we
expected it to be. Right now, Caitlyn Clark has come
in to the league and proven right away that she's
one of the best players. Right Like, you can have
the conversation as to who the best player is, and
you can have a three or four different opinions, and
I get that, but she's come in as the biggest star.
There's no question to who the biggest star in the
(18:11):
WNBA is and if you're the biggest star, this is
the one thing that I will say, Will you know
what could potentially push Caitlin Clark's star power down a
bit and and push her down for being a big star,
is that she's playing terrific, right, But you know what,
Paige Beckers is playing terrific. Asia Wilson has eleven MVPs.

Uh.
Speaker 1 (18:34):
You know, you have lots of players in the league
that are playing really well, right Angel Reese and her
and her rebound still have her up at the top
of list breaking all the rebounds wrecords, Like they have
a lot of really good players who are putting up.
Olivia Miles is making a big run over the course
of this past year. If Caitlin Clark's going to stay
this player, and it's weird to say, but she's got

to keep doing and start doing more miraculous Kate and
Clark type things, because that's the one thing that's gonna
take say, Okay, great, yeah, do we really need to
go see Caitlyn Clark play, because eventually, if she's just
this nineteen and eight player that is that is pretty good.
But she loses the the sexiness of the logo threes
(19:18):
and the behind the back passes and and and what
she's able to do on the court that made her
stand out so much at Iowa coming into the league,
where she was going to turn the league on its ear,
Like that's the one thing that's gonna really hurt her start.
It's not gonna be this conversation about is she being treated,
how she's being treated by the rest of the league
and officials and all that kind of stuff. But if
she just stays this really good player, okay, eventually people
(19:43):
are gonna say Kaitlyn Clark doesn't need to be musty anymore,
Like like the clock is ticking, and this is her
third year in the league, and yes, she missed almost
all of last year with a bad groin injury and
that absolutely sucked. But we're only people are only gonna
stick around waiting on Caitlyn Clark for song long before
they move on. And the W is in a moment
right now where everybody's paying attention to what they're doing.

They're part of the public consciousness and I don't know
that that's going anywhere, but for Caitlin Clark, Yeah, we
need to see more stuff like tonight. And I get
that that's unfair to put on her, but she came
into the league and everybody expected we're gonna get the
Caitlin Clark that we saw at Iowa. We have not
gotten that Caitlin Clark. We've gotten glimpses of it, but
after the newness of it is wearing off. If she

just settles into being a top ten WNBA player, guess what, well, Okay,
who's new now. Let let's let's take a look and
see what maybe now Page Beckers is more of a
must watch player when Juju Watkins eventually enters the WNBA
whatever it's going to be. But the clock is kind
of ticking on Caitlin Clark to give us something spectacular
and do it a little bit more regularly, and like Knights,
(20:49):
like tonight, There's got to be some nights where the
fever just decided, you know what, this is a Caitlyn Knight.
And is this going to be something that is great
for our development as a team. No, but as a
great for the WNBA where thinking promote it. Here's another
forty five point night from Kaitlyn Clark. Here's a fifty
point night from Kaitlyn Clark, because that's what's gonna keep
going the league is when she has Knights like tonight.

And I'm not saying you got to change your team
entirely to get to where it's at, but this is
kind of stuff that Caitlyn Clark's got to do if
you're gonna keep the growth of this league going.

Yeah, I mean, you got other star power, but certainly
we've seen the television ratings and the throughput is so
much greater when she's on the court. The hard part
is this was oftentimes the player she was at iow
and I don't I don't mean the hey rain, making
threes all the time. The other stuff was always there

in route to the winning but it doesn't make highlight reels. Right,
the drawing two defenders and a bounce past to the
middle of the lane for a wide open layup. Nobody
cares about that. Yeah, you and me and the nerds,
So you know, it's it's that kind of thing. And
unfortunately to Caitlin Clark, everybody's like, why can't she hit
fifty from three point? She was automatic college, I don't know,

because they run at her, they hit her, they badger her,
and look, as long as the rules are what you
are and you're gonna allow it's like defensive backs and
whatever else you're gonna take as much as the officiating
is gonna allow you to go. Wait, we could play
physical tonight game on, you know, and go from there.
So for Caitlin Clark, yeah, it is a running clock,

you know. Tonight it should be noted that seventeen of
her points came from the fall line, so clearly that
worked by the Congress people and all of the outrage
on social media, and maybe while she didn't take any
interviews or didn't have her phone with her, it seen
when she was chipping Engelbert and the folks there at

the top brass at the WNBA. Maybe took the notice going, hey, guys,
we're getting a lot about the officiating. Because remember we
talked you and I have talked about this a lot, right,
because it's not just Caitlyn Clark that this has been about.
How much postgame interviews have we cited in the last
month when we've talked about the WNBA, you know, usually

with Clark as a centerpiece, but postgame interviews, Yeah, yeah,
you guys got a gritty win. It's like, yeah, the
referees don't know what they're doing. You go and find
about eight different women that have done that and made
that the first point they make at the end of
a game. Yeah, we had to fight through it, and
the referees they're just not good. So it's you know,
an epidemic there. But certainly I get your point with
(23:31):
Caitlin Clark. You need some of these fireworks nights where
it's all about positivity, right, and the best of what
you expect from Caitlin Clark. And you know, for Page Beckers,
she's had the glory of coming in in the shadow
that Caitlyn Clark casts and like none of that noise
filters down to her and how players really feel and
(23:53):
that's between them, their maker and you know, their best
friends and therapists, because we haven't seen a lot of
it on social except when she really gets into it
with you know, an angel rese or someone of that nature,
or Alsta Thomas takes it to the.

having a match against Logan Paul. Right now, this feud
has been going on on social media for a while.
The Flag football game, Brady had a little fun with

Logan Paul. And I get that Tom Brady is in
a place in his life because it's obvious to see
where he is still looking how to replace the competitiveness
that he felt on the football field. He hasn't found that, right.
Michael Jordan took him forever to try to where can
I Where can I find the competitiveness that I've had
on the basketball court now that I can't play anymore.

And look at what his post game career doing a
whole bunch of different things, right.

And now he's the greatest race car owner in history.

if you the minute you see Brady in the ring
with Logan Paul, you're gonna go this is the greatest

quarterback of all time who is now wrestling. Like I I,
I don't think that's gonna be a great optic. I
don't care what kind of outfit Brady wears, whether he
wears a TB twelve outfit or his old Patriots jersey.
I just I don't think that that's going to land
like he thinks it's going to And like a lot
of people think you're gonna look at that and go,
oh man, you're you're the greatest of all time. Man,

you can't be doing this. You can't be doing not
that it's about wrestling about it, but it's just when
you're the greatest of all time and stuff like, you
have to move on and and keep that grace and
and and keep the impact that I'm gonna do different things,
gonna rate, I'm gonna use my money to do a
lot of different things. And instead it's you're now trading
shots with Logan Paul, Like, really, that's where you are.

You're trading shots with Logan Paul, a guy who is
a self made, a guy from nowhere that just decides
I'm gonna be big on YouTube. And now this is
what you're doing. And you're not wrestling the Undertaker. You're
not you're not wrestling, uh, Dwayne Johnson. You're now trading
shots with Logan Paul in the ring. Like, I don't
think that that's gonna be an optic that's gonna make

Now I think it's gonna quite the opposite.

poured everything into football, hasn't figured out what that one
