But big developments right now, Dodgers Stadium, Marquee MLB Series
of the Week, and we're now the two best teams
in the National League record wise, Dodgers and the Brewers.
That looked like the Dodgers were gonna tie the Brewers.
They were just normal ninth inning away from a win.

Then ed when Diaz happened. He gave up four hits,
three runs overall, and now the Brewers are one strike
away from a huge come from behind win, putting up
three in the ninth inning and sending the Dodgers down
to defeat and winning Game one of this series. Now,
just real quick on Diz for a secon, because we
talked about them before. Give you something a little bit

different here is that we talked about how the Dodgers
can't trust him, right and they won't be able to
trust him. October is going to be a really difficult
month because these are the years that Edwin Diaz has.
But right now, if you're la forget about being able
to go back to him in this series, I would
not be surprised, and I would bet you that sometime
in the next couple of days you are going to

get the announcement from the Dodgers or just maybe not
quite an announcement, but and letting you know that, hey,
Diz has some things to iron out. So temporarily we're
removing him from the closer's role because you can't put
him out there. You can't put him out there to
close games. It's too volatile at this point. Right again,
(02:40):
since he's come back as eer is twelve and a half,
here is twelve and a half this season, you can't
put him out there to close games. And you have
to understand that maybe he's not going to be able
to close games this season. This is the end of August.
This is the end of August. This is not a
we're going through some things in May. This is the
end of August. I don't know who would go. I
don't know who would be because you know, look, Vessia

came into night and he was bad. But I really
think you are just maybe a day or two away
from the Dodgers saying listen, no panic, no everything, but
Edwin's gonna work out of the eighth inning, maybe seventh inning,
lower leverage situations to get right. That absolutely has to happen.

If you are the Dodgers, it is his what seventh
appearance since returning to the roster at the end of July,
he's only pitched scoreless frames or partial frames twice in
that period. You mentioned the era, but the hit ability

is there no movement on the ball and he's just
getting tagged. And so right now the Dodgers like, that's
the one thing. Look, they're twenty four games over five
hundred oooho in the grand scheme, right you're playing for October.
But that is something that needs to be resolved when
the margin shrink and you need to figure out on

that piece of the puzzle. At this point, when you
look at the rotation, you just got Snell back with
a huge start this past Tuesday. All right, he's ramping up.
So you're hoping that it's just a repeat of what
you had a year ago. Okay, one piece of your rotation, salt.
You've got schoobl He sat a couple of uneven starts,
still getting acclimated. But you assume when the money is

it's money time and the lights are brightest, he'll be
ready to go. You're not gonna pitch Otani. No.

Year he can he can come up and relieve and
I didn't even get to Yamamoto, who's your workhorse. But
he also showed you last year whenever you need him
to take the baseball, he's more than willing. So he'll

more Garcia Para in before they go to Diaz again,
that could be true. Put no more on Jerry Harriston

in before that outs. Yeah, no, ma, no ma, no

Uh so again. Yeah, look, Brewers just beat the Dodgers

it with three runs in the ninth inning. Yes, it

will be someone new closing for the Dodgers. I would
bet hunt.

They ended up using seven pitchers today.

Yeah, that's a lot. It's a big loss tonight too.
This is this is not where they lost a game
to the Mets or to the Nationals. They blew a
game against the Giants. You know, this was Hey, this
is a big game. This is we want to be
the number one team. But this is the team you're
going to see and we want to make sure we
are you know, we are the top team. We want

we want everything that can be go along with the
best record in the National League. This is a game
where you know they had it in their back pocket.
They were like, okay, ninth has in two run league,
got in our pocket. We're all good. But I told
this is what happens to Diaz all of a sudden.
It's not just the one run games where he comes
in and sometimes the middle of the order tags him.
This is the games where you have a two to
three run lead and all of a sudden you look

up and go, hey, wait a minute, how the bases loaded,
and nobody out what the hell just happened. That's what
Edwin Diaz does. The games he blows are gut wrenchers.
They're not just hey, you know, hey, clean up hitter,
hit a home run. You came in. Otani hits a
home run off a few judge, it's a home run. Now.
This is where, man, this was a game that we
had it like, I'm kind of this is in the
victory column and it's out of it. And those are
(06:29):
really especially against the Brewers. That's a really tough game.

Talk about Phillips, you talk about Tanner, Scott, You got
guys on the roster that have done the job before.
We talked about Sasaki and moving him. But this is
your litmus test of where you are right. These games
are gonna be hotly contested and it's a big spotlight series.
You've got a couple of them across baseball this week.

This one's gonna get a lot of run. And certainly
Edwin Diaz as a guy that was already getting asked
the a bit of a bit of side eye when
he comes in the exasperated side. You got a little
too giddy about it.

first action, number one overall pick, comes in off the bench.
Kirk Cuss plays well, throws a touchdown. Mendoza comes in

at least just as good as you can. Fernando looking
left across the medal cut touchdown Jack Besh. Fernando Mendoza
a rifle to Jack Besh and the Raiders score six touchdown,
Las Vegas Raiders. I'm standing up in the studio Raiders Network.

JT the brick on the call, Yeah, JT Uh. You
know how Berman would announce that?

Would Berman have announced this one?

Clearly there was something in the air that night, and
it was a football for Fernando DJ you better you
better you betch. Oh that's a good one too. I
like that. That's gonna like that. Here you go.

We got a million of them. But yeah, no, that
was a dart. You could hear it kind of faintly
under the call by the analyst.

He had another throw across the middle from his own twenty,
about a fifteen yarder where he went over the linebacker
and in between two dbs. There were a couple of
throws where you're just like, that's big boy throw, big
boy moment.

Right there, we were robbed of the Carson Beck Fernando
Mendoza rematch. I was kind of mad about that Beck
sitting out with a rib injury. However, the Cardinals did say,
look he's fine, everything is okay. They were just being
a little bit cautious, which, okay, that's but could.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
You get the extra game because of the Hall of
Fame game too. But it was one of those all right,
when you're trying to get some kind of storyline and
gets some gro Hey, this guy played really well. Hey,
hey Mendoza, go match what he did last week.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
Yeah, but we Brisett did play, you know, didn't throw
an in complete pass through touchdowns and everything is fine.
But we told you this a week and a half ago,
and now congratulations everybody on TV that wanted to pick
up and talk about it today. Uh, this is not
a quarterback derby that is over in Vegas. Fernando Mendoza
(09:57):
has a three part test that he has to every
single part of right, It's like if the SAT was
three parts instead of two. Well, you gotta write your name,
then the English and the math. All right, so you
have to all three they have three parts. Now, well,
like writing your name, you get like photo.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
I thought there was actually a third part, now, isn't there?
Speaker 1 (10:15):
No, No, no, there's still just three two parts. There's
there's there's English, there's math, and there's writing your name. Okay,
and that's what it is. So he's got a three
part test that he has to ace every single part
of it. But the door is open for him to
win the starting job out of the gate for the
Raiders to think, you we talked about a few days
(10:35):
and again, congratulates everybody late to the party. That's why
I say we're ahead of the curve. Uh, Mendoza can
win the job if he plays great in all the
preseason games. This year, he'll be the start of Week one,
because you can sit back until you're blue in the
fa say things like, well, we don't need to see Fernando.
We has plenty of time, and Kirk Cousins blah blah blah.
I live in the real world where I know that
(10:57):
what teams say in the off season is much different
than when the footballs fly for real at the end
of August beginning of September. Number one overall picks, if
they're ready, have to play. And if Mendoza shows you
like he did tonight that he can play, he's gonna
start over Kirk Cousins, It's gonna happen. I know the
worry you could have about the offensive line, is it
(11:18):
there to protect him? Well, the schedule is never gonna
be easier from the Raiders than the first three games
off the jump, and Mendoza is also someone who can
make plays and get outside the pocket. He is a
bit of a mobile quarterback and that's going to mitigate
any questions you have about the offensive line. If he
was a guy who's gonna drop back and stay there,
I would say, yeah, you're right, is he gonna go
back and drop anchor. All right, maybe you want to
(11:40):
wait a little bit, but he is someone that can
get out of the pocket, he can make plays. And
everything I saw from him tonight, it wasn't It wasn't
just that the game didn't seem too big for him.
Is that he came out aggressive. He was throwing the
football well, his play action fakes were good. He was
trying to push the ball down the field, trying to
make plays. There was no Hey, it's my first day,
welcome to the NFL. He showed you that I'm aggressive,
(12:03):
going down the field ten out of sixteen for one
hundred yards and a touchdown his first series, the first
couple of plays. Okay, had to get used to things
a little bit, but that's how it goes. But you
look at what he did in his totality. Did lead
them down, did throw a touchdown, did lead them down
what could have been an easy, makeable field goal, but
the Raiders missed it. The door is open for him
(12:23):
to start, and if he plays well in the next
two games, there's going to be nothing stopping him from starting.
He's going to start this year for the Raiders.
Speaker 3 (12:30):
Yeah, it's the if he's ready, right, that's the thing.
It's like, it's not an automatic. I'm a firm believer
of the old school of if I've got the luxury
of a quarterback where I can bring you along when
you're ready, fine, but if you if you're fully baked. Right,
he had a good year at Cal. You go and
see what he did last year to win the Heisman,
to win the national title, and as you said, he
(12:53):
is elusive the line. They've got their center man and
bringing in Linderbaum, so that's great. Still have some work
to do. You've got enough weapons on the outside genty.
Hopefully he's not hitting the backfield seven out of every
eight carries like he was a year ago. But you know,
Mindeoz is gonna run himself into trouble too, right, he
(13:14):
tried to. And there was one plays his little brothers
in the booth and they're talking about ah this and that.
Speaker 1 (13:19):
Same haircut like his little brother, same exact haircut, like.
Speaker 3 (13:24):
You know, a little snarky, Hey, you and your brother,
do you have this dance? Do you do this whatever?
And then he got outside the pocket. He got absolutely
flatt because he didn't get rid of the ball, and
the kid deadpanned Mom's not gonna like that one. Yeah, no, no, no,
you mom, you know you'd like to have that one back.
But it's the idea that if he's ready to go,
(13:45):
then yeah, certainly you're never gonna find a long stretch
of week games. You got Miami to start. Okay, there's
there's your battle for in theory the bottom at the
Chargers at New Orleans. Everybody's darling as we go deeper
into the preseason versus Kansas City in Las Vegas, at
(14:05):
New England and then home against Buffalo and the Rams.
So first half of the season, yeah, some pretty pretty
heavyweight squads. But if he's shown you and he's the
aptitude's been there, sure I got no problem with it.
You're not on the hook for a lot of money
for Kirk Cousins, and if anything, you'd love to keep
him in bubble wrapped to a degree so he's tradable.
Speaker 1 (14:28):
Well, that's the other thing, is like, if if Mendoza
plays really well, they still have Aiden O'Connell, and if
Cousins still throws the football, well you can now it's
it's you know, they signed him to this contract, you
pay him twenty were you gonna pay him twenty million. No,
you need a quarterback that bad, you're gonna pay him
that money. Well, but it's a thing of if he's
on the roster next year. A lot of the money
for this year is being paid by the Falcons. So, uh,
(14:49):
it's it's fuzzy math, but I don't think it's you know,
something that they're beholden to.
Speaker 3 (14:55):
Uh. And if a team gets desperate, I don't know,
like say the Rams, that they wouldn't come a calling.
Speaker 1 (15:02):

two more to go, because if he has a bad
game in one of those too, it's easy for the

a little bit different at him. But if he aces

who had this kind of beginning to his season against

If if Burrow is Bear and Nicky is the Bengals,

then Sarah is the rest of the NFL. And you
know they're in the car and Sarah's talking about, Hey,
life could be great with me. I don't know why
with Nicky as other NFL teams, man, everything is great
and then what happens next happens. That's kind of how
the Bengals need to watch out because every other team
is going to look so much more attractive to Joe

Burrow if this season goes bad for the Bengals.

Oh, you've seen it in their franchise history, right, go
back to Carson Palmer looking around, going I'm getting bludgeoned
and what is this working out for me? Now he
ended up becoming a Raider, So so how much better
did it?
Speaker 2 (20:01):

But you hope for if you're Joe Burrow that history
does not repeat itself in that regard. But the same
kind as the parallel right when we look at quarterback.
Great assets on the offensive side, usually one or two defenders,
but not a defensive jugger out the offensive line, usually
pretty shoddy. And when we see him take a hit

here at the start of a preseason game like this
could be a long one. Now, there were a team
that has gotten a lot of pub as I mentioned,
when you talk about Chase Brown, you talk about the
receivers and what you have offensively, that you have an opportunity.
But you look at the division. We've talked a little
bit about the Steelers. We'll get back into them a bit,
(20:46):
the Ravens in the post Horribaugh era. I'm intrigued. Right,
it pays a Flowers, You got Derreck Henry back for
another run, and then well Cleveland's just good enough to
mess things up. In other words, they'll win four, yeah,
one of which or maybe bold against your Bangles, or
maybe both, maybe both, But but just the idea. If
(21:08):
you're Joe Burrow, I mean, it's a long road. I
talk about it frequently. Right, we had that the Super
Bowl was here in LA and that was supposed to
be the beginning of a long process of the Bengals
running rough shot over the NFL. All those Bengal fans leaving. Boy,
that was a fun year. Can't wait to be back.
It's like hold on, hold on, and here we are
(21:28):
years later, going, yeah, it hasn't gotten any better, and
Joe's missed a lot of time.
Speaker 1 (21:34):
Bengals gotta walk around with that cinder block. Nobody come
after our guy. Nobody you go near my guy? Wait,
do you see what I do to you? Why?

Why are the Bengals They don't want to pay for anything,
but they're trying to force extra personnel to travel with
Joe Burrow at all times, and they're insisting that they
get to hold his phone. This is that kind of
check in on Joe Burrow every five second. Crazy man,
Joe Burrow, please stand That's how it goes.

So. Uh. Meanwhile, we're gonna make sense of something Jerry
Jones said today that doesn't make sense. But I can
explain it, and not only explain it, but tell you
why I agree with what he's doing and how this
(22:28):
could be a huge sea change for the Cowboy. It's
a lot to do, Yeah, it's a lot, a lot, hefty, hefty.
I am a professional. I've done this, yeah, so I
can do it. The one year anniversary of the Micah
Parsons trade is upon us, and Jerry Jones was asked
(22:48):
about that today and he said, hey, I would absolutely
do that trade again because it helped him open him
up to things that maybe he wouldn't have done before.
And I get what he's saying. Now you're going to
listen and not understand what he's saying, But I get
what he's saying. I'll explain it all. Don't worry. I'll
explain everything. But just to understand that why this is
(23:11):
such a big deal for Jerry Jones to talk about
the anniversary or the Micah Parsons trade the way he did.
Here he is trying to explain just why the Parsons
trade was so good and why he would do it again.
Speaker 2 (23:24):
It's like going to Las Vegas with some extra money
in your pocket, or going out there with the babies
new pair of shoes and formal money in your pocket.
It can't be as good as a crapshooter as you
are when you've got the baby's new pair of shoes
throwing out there with it. So in a way this
actually created a menial part to us and to my
(23:47):
roll in it with me to step out and make
the moves and take the if you will, risks that
are involved in in which they are to be where
we are today with the complete makeover of the defense.

All right, a mental thing with me trying to understand
what he was talking about. But I can do it.

But I like the way he said created a mental thing.

Yeah, like, hey, I'm trapped in this, or I've created

baby's new pairs of shoes. Okay, So, first of all,
Jerry Jones is mentioning a reference that is probably seventy
years old. The baby needs a new pair of shoes
while you're gambling. Maybe if you're old enough, you've seen
a black and white TV show or some kind of
show from the sixties where someone's gambling and rolling dice, going,

come on, seven, baby needs a new pair of shoes.
It was just a thing to say that people did,
to say, Hey, this brings me luck gambling, Right, baby
needs a new pair of shoes. They would roll the dice.
Speaker 3 (24:40):
Right cultural Oregon origin street dice games earliest appearances and
like newspapers around eighteen ninety.
Speaker 1 (24:48):
Yeah, it's a long time, yeah, a long time, Like
I remember hearing that reference when I was a kid.
Grub baby needs a new pair of shoes. But here's
Jerry Jones saying, it's like gambling when you already have
a new pair of shoes. I can explain this speak
Jerry Jones, I can explain translator. Oh boy, I mean
I'm winded by it. And you know the diet coke.
But this is what Jerry Jones means by is that

making the Micah Parsons trade has opened him up to
a different way of running the Dallas Cowboys. Okay, and
it's a valuable thing, and it makes things different in
trying to put a team together when you are gambling
with more assets, right like the baby. He says, you
know this is like gambling when you already have the
(25:33):
baby's new pair of shoes. Right, So now, what is it?
I know, I know, I know, trust me, trust me.
This is what I mean by is that the old
Jerry Jones, and as Jerry Jones run the Cowboys for
thirty years, would have been I drafted Micah Parsons. He's
a star because I drafted him. I'm giving him money
and this has turned out to run the Dallas Cowboys
into ruin because the guys that Jerry Jones has wanted
(25:55):
to pay because he sees them as his players. He
drafted them, whether it's Dak or Ezekiel Elliott. I've given
them money and what's happened. It's ruined the team because
they're too top heavy and they're not deep where they
need to be. They're not deep at the right positions.
So this is Jerry Jones doing things like paying Ezekiel
Elliott all that kinds of money to watch Ezekiel Elliott
(26:16):
just turn into a guy, right, And that was a bet,
Like when you could have turned that and turn Ezekiel
Elliott and flipped him into more assets. Right. So that's
the way Jerry Jones had always done things. But now
being forced into this trade by Micah Parsons, didn't want
to stay. He wanted to go. What did Jerry Jones do?
He got a bunch of assets that he's turned into
first round picks that he hopes to make a big
(26:39):
difference in the defense this year, getting assets to make
the big trade with the Jets to bring in Quinn Williams,
who's a big disruptor defensive line. He's terrific. They gave
him money for a couple of years, not one of
those big eight year deals, but three years a hundred
millennis that's what he's worth. So okay. Jerry Jones normally
wouldn't have done stuff like that. Normally would just say, well,
here's Mike, I want to pay him. He's the best,
(27:02):
one of the best defensive players in the NFL. We're
gonna do this. But the situation with Micah got so
out of control he had no choice but to trade
him out of his comfort zone. But what did I
do with all the assets? Now? The Cowboys right now,
you can argue you are better than they were at
this point last year. They are healthier offensively, they found
a way to move their money around to keep some
of the big players at different positions. Their defense is
(27:24):
better than it was a year ago. All you got
to do is be league average. Got to be top
five defense. But if your league average, you have improved
enough in the NFC East that maybe you are the
team to beat in that division. So in a year,
because this was foisted upon him all of a sudden,
this is a different way. He is looking at the
Dallas Cowboys. Now, maybe every guy that comes up for
a contract extension. Isn't someone he's gonna automatically pay. Well,
(27:47):
we got to pay Michael Parsons because he gets to
the quarterback. You know, there's a lot of guys get
to the quarterback, right, But if you have a shut
down corner, you want to pay defensive tackle that stops
to run. Whatever it is. Hey, these are the guys
I have to go pay. So maybe now Jerry Jones,
he's a different way to build the team, which is
better news for the Cowboys because quite honestly, the Cowboys
had to take chances. They had to do something different
(28:07):
than the way they were just banging their heads against
the wall, continuing to build these top heavy teams like
they have the last thirty years. So there's Jerry Jones
making his whole. Hey, I'm gambling with the baby's booties,
with the baby's new pair of shoes because I don't
have Micah Parsons, but I have way more assets. I
have more I can do. So it's Jerry Jones doing
(28:28):
Jerry Jones things. But that's what he's meaning, and that's
why this is such a big day for the Cowboys,
such a big way, because he now maybe is seeing
the Cowboys differently where oh, I don't always have to
pay these guys, and maybe I can trade them and
the assets are better. And he's seen the last year
where oh, I've traded Micah and it's worked out because
I have this player and this player this player, and
(28:50):
I have this draft pick that I can turn into
this player. Oh. Now I see how it's going where
I mean, I guess you want to just say, but
thirty years Jason, I know, but let's just celebrate. He's
very late to the part, but he got there.
Speaker 3 (29:00):
But everybody comes to things in life when when it's
their time, right, you can't you get to force someone
to mature, like just because they pass another birthday or
or have a graduation or whatever the case is. Like, No,
I mean, it's it's it's tough. It's frustrating. With Jerry Jones,
you've watched it and you've seen iterations where they seemingly
(29:22):
have built decent rosters and then all of a sudden,
you have situations guys got sick, and remember the team
they had, and then Travis Frederick got sick and the
offensive line crumbled there, which rendered Ezekiel Elliott ineffective. But
you look at the circumstance these years. Now you bring
(29:42):
in Bullard, you bring in Thompson, you talk about Williams,
You've rebuilt your defense. And for Michael Parks, it's a
great player. And you always love to start with great players,
but if it's going to preclude you from doing it
and create such a divide and where it was in
the battle that Jerry Jones had with Michael Parson's agent
(30:04):
and feeling disrespected and the PA gets involved in all
of that. It's the new way of doing things, and
sometimes you have to come to things in a harsh
moment of losing what you loved, what you had. And
that's it with Michael Parsons. He would have loved for
him to be a cowboy forever, be a Hall of Famer,
it be that guy. But circumstance has changed, and now
(30:28):
you move on and you've got a better team. The
Eagles are a slight favorite over the Eagles, all right,
the Eagles slightly over the Cowboys. Uh. And then it's
a bit of a fallback if you want to throw
money in the fountain for the Giants or the Commanders.
Speaker 1 (30:43):
Now. Now, don't don't get me wrong, I'd love to
give Michael Parsons that new pair of shoes. But when
I go into the casino and I have the pair
of shoes, if he doesn't have shoes, it's tougher to
get to the quarterback. If you're not wearing shoes, it
does work. There's no shoeless Micha Parsons like shoeless Joe Jackson.
But if I have the shoe, then I'd be able
to get the shoes. I could put the shoes on,
or I could give the shoes to somebody else and
(31:04):
they can get to the quarterback. Now, earlier, Jerry, you
said booty or Booty's booties booties John David booty quarterback,
and tried to sign him, was very high on him,
but but but couldn't get him. So that's how that
worked out.
Speaker 3 (31:17):
I just wanted to make sure you plural plural, made
that a plural word there, because otherwise we were talking
about something completely different, And.
Speaker 1 (31:25):
Make sure you know that. Before I signed Quinn Williams,
I made sure that he had a pair of shoes
and he was gonna he was gonna wear him and
that's how he was gonna Because again, when you play,
when you're playing with your hand in the dirt. It's
it's difficult to to really, you know, when you can't
can't dig into the dirt because you don't have shoes on.
That's a difficult thing. So if I have the shoes,
I could give the shoes to whoever I want to
(31:46):
give the shoes to. I could also turn those shoes
into maybe a different pair of shoes. And then all
of a sudden, I'm at the bust of brown store
or stride right, and I'm getting all kinds of shoes
for people. And you get a pair of shoes, and
you get a now oprah of giving shoes areway yeah,
And now my whole team is in shoes and the
other team is not wearing shoes, and we should win
that game.

The Jackson the green there plural yeah, plural, plural yeah, pluralizing.
It's not an easy word to say for for this
young man. But you've got booties all over

But big developments right now, Dodgers Stadium, Marquee MLB Series
of the Week, and we're now the two best teams
in the National League record wise, Dodgers and the Brewers.
That looked like the Dodgers were gonna tie the Brewers.
They were just normal ninth inning away from a win.
(01:35):
Then ed when Diaz happened. He gave up four hits,
three runs overall, and now the Brewers are one strike
away from a huge come from behind win, putting up
three in the ninth inning and sending the Dodgers down
to defeat and winning Game one of this series. Now,
just real quick on Diz for a secon, because we
talked about them before. Give you something a little bit
(01:56):
different here is that we talked about how the Dodgers
can't trust him, right and they won't be able to
trust him. October is going to be a really difficult
month because these are the years that Edwin Diaz has.
But right now, if you're la forget about being able
to go back to him in this series, I would
not be surprised, and I would bet you that sometime
in the next couple of days you are going to
(02:19):
get the announcement from the Dodgers or just maybe not
quite an announcement, but and letting you know that, hey,
Diz has some things to iron out. So temporarily we're
removing him from the closer's role because you can't put
him out there. You can't put him out there to
close games. It's too volatile at this point. Right again,
(02:40):
since he's come back as eer is twelve and a half,
here is twelve and a half this season, you can't
put him out there to close games. And you have
to understand that maybe he's not going to be able
to close games this season. This is the end of August.
This is the end of August. This is not a
we're going through some things in May. This is the
end of August. I don't know who would go. I
don't know who would be because you know, look, Vessia
(03:01):
came into night and he was bad. But I really
think you are just maybe a day or two away
from the Dodgers saying listen, no panic, no everything, but
Edwin's gonna work out of the eighth inning, maybe seventh inning,
lower leverage situations to get right. That absolutely has to happen.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
If you are the Dodgers, it is his what seventh
appearance since returning to the roster at the end of July,
he's only pitched scoreless frames or partial frames twice in
that period. You mentioned the era, but the hit ability
(03:39):
is there no movement on the ball and he's just
getting tagged. And so right now the Dodgers like, that's
the one thing. Look, they're twenty four games over five
hundred oooho in the grand scheme, right you're playing for October.
But that is something that needs to be resolved when
the margin shrink and you need to figure out on
(04:00):
that piece of the puzzle. At this point, when you
look at the rotation, you just got Snell back with
a huge start this past Tuesday. All right, he's ramping up.
So you're hoping that it's just a repeat of what
you had a year ago. Okay, one piece of your rotation, salt.
You've got schoobl He sat a couple of uneven starts,
still getting acclimated. But you assume when the money is
(04:25):
it's money time and the lights are brightest, he'll be
ready to go. You're not gonna pitch Otani. No.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
Sasaki showed last.
Speaker 3 (04:33):
Year he can he can come up and relieve and
I didn't even get to Yamamoto, who's your workhorse. But
he also showed you last year whenever you need him
to take the baseball, he's more than willing. So he'll
get the call before DS does. Dude, They'll put no
more Garcia Para in before they go to Diaz again,
that could be true. Put no more on Jerry Harriston
(04:54):
in before that outs. Yeah, no, ma, no ma, no
mine in the game.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
Ah, I tell you my boys, wicked, smart, wicked, You
got smartpack you got smart pack on that I haven't seen.
Uh so again. Yeah, look, Brewers just beat the Dodgers
five to four. Kyle Tucker flies out to the well
just about the warning track and right field. Brewers win
it with three runs in the ninth inning. Yes, it
(05:20):
will be someone new closing for the Dodgers. I would
bet hunt.
Speaker 3 (05:24):
They ended up using seven pitchers today.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
Yeah, that's a lot. It's a big loss tonight too.
This is this is not where they lost a game
to the Mets or to the Nationals. They blew a
game against the Giants. You know, this was Hey, this
is a big game. This is we want to be
the number one team. But this is the team you're
going to see and we want to make sure we
are you know, we are the top team. We want
(05:46):
we want everything that can be go along with the
best record in the National League. This is a game
where you know they had it in their back pocket.
They were like, okay, ninth has in two run league,
got in our pocket. We're all good. But I told
this is what happens to Diaz all of a sudden.
It's not just the one run games where he comes
in and sometimes the middle of the order tags him.
This is the games where you have a two to
three run lead and all of a sudden you look
(06:07):
up and go, hey, wait a minute, how the bases loaded,
and nobody out what the hell just happened. That's what
Edwin Diaz does. The games he blows are gut wrenchers.
They're not just hey, you know, hey, clean up hitter,
hit a home run. You came in. Otani hits a
home run off a few judge, it's a home run. Now.
This is where, man, this was a game that we
had it like, I'm kind of this is in the
victory column and it's out of it. And those are
(06:29):
really especially against the Brewers. That's a really tough game.
Speaker 3 (06:32):
Talk about Phillips, you talk about Tanner, Scott, You got
guys on the roster that have done the job before.
We talked about Sasaki and moving him. But this is
your litmus test of where you are right. These games
are gonna be hotly contested and it's a big spotlight series.
You've got a couple of them across baseball this week.
(06:52):
This one's gonna get a lot of run. And certainly
Edwin Diaz as a guy that was already getting asked
the a bit of a bit of side eye when
he comes in the exasperated side. You got a little
too giddy about it.

but I told you I know Edwin DS.

Come on, man, no, no, But sometimes you don't have

more Baseball Cup. We'll see if anything is said about
DS the closer's role.

of the NFL preseason. Look, the rest of the hour,

seen tonight in the NFL and the field of dreams
game in Major League Baseball for Nando Mendoza in his
first action, number one overall pick, comes in off the bench.
Kirk Cuss plays well, throws a touchdown. Mendoza comes in

and he says, anything you can do, I can do
at least just as good as you can. Fernando looking
left across the medal cut touchdown Jack Besh. Fernando Mendoza
a rifle to Jack Besh and the Raiders score six touchdown,
Las Vegas Raiders. I'm standing up in the studio Raiders Network.

JT the brick on the call, Yeah, JT Uh. You
know how Berman would announce that?
Speaker 3 (08:32):
Would Berman have announced this one?
Speaker 1 (08:34):
Clearly there was something in the air that night, and
it was a football for Fernando DJ you better you
better you betch. Oh that's a good one too. I
like that. That's gonna like that. Here you go.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
We got a million of them. But yeah, no, that
was a dart. You could hear it kind of faintly
under the call by the analyst.
Speaker 1 (08:55):

He had another throw across the middle from his own twenty,
about a fifteen yarder where he went over the linebacker
and in between two dbs. There were a couple of
throws where you're just like, that's big boy throw, big
boy moment.
Speaker 1 (09:09):
Right there, we were robbed of the Carson Beck Fernando
Mendoza rematch. I was kind of mad about that Beck
sitting out with a rib injury. However, the Cardinals did say,
look he's fine, everything is okay. They were just being
a little bit cautious, which, okay, that's but could.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
You get the extra game because of the Hall of
Fame game too. But it was one of those all right,
when you're trying to get some kind of storyline and
gets some gro Hey, this guy played really well. Hey,
hey Mendoza, go match what he did last week.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
Yeah, but we Brisett did play, you know, didn't throw
an in complete pass through touchdowns and everything is fine.
But we told you this a week and a half ago,
and now congratulations everybody on TV that wanted to pick
up and talk about it today. Uh, this is not
a quarterback derby that is over in Vegas. Fernando Mendoza
(09:57):
has a three part test that he has to every
single part of right, It's like if the SAT was
three parts instead of two. Well, you gotta write your name,
then the English and the math. All right, so you
have to all three they have three parts. Now, well,
like writing your name, you get like photo.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
I thought there was actually a third part, now, isn't there?
Speaker 1 (10:15):
No, No, no, there's still just three two parts. There's
there's there's English, there's math, and there's writing your name. Okay,
and that's what it is. So he's got a three
part test that he has to ace every single part
of it. But the door is open for him to
win the starting job out of the gate for the
Raiders to think, you we talked about a few days
(10:35):
and again, congratulates everybody late to the party. That's why
I say we're ahead of the curve. Uh, Mendoza can
win the job if he plays great in all the
preseason games. This year, he'll be the start of Week one,
because you can sit back until you're blue in the
fa say things like, well, we don't need to see Fernando.
We has plenty of time, and Kirk Cousins blah blah blah.
I live in the real world where I know that
(10:57):
what teams say in the off season is much different
than when the footballs fly for real at the end
of August beginning of September. Number one overall picks, if
they're ready, have to play. And if Mendoza shows you
like he did tonight that he can play, he's gonna
start over Kirk Cousins, It's gonna happen. I know the
worry you could have about the offensive line, is it
(11:18):
there to protect him? Well, the schedule is never gonna
be easier from the Raiders than the first three games
off the jump, and Mendoza is also someone who can
make plays and get outside the pocket. He is a
bit of a mobile quarterback and that's going to mitigate
any questions you have about the offensive line. If he
was a guy who's gonna drop back and stay there,
I would say, yeah, you're right, is he gonna go
back and drop anchor. All right, maybe you want to
(11:40):
wait a little bit, but he is someone that can
get out of the pocket, he can make plays. And
everything I saw from him tonight, it wasn't It wasn't
just that the game didn't seem too big for him.
Is that he came out aggressive. He was throwing the
football well, his play action fakes were good. He was
trying to push the ball down the field, trying to
make plays. There was no Hey, it's my first day,
welcome to the NFL. He showed you that I'm aggressive,
(12:03):
going down the field ten out of sixteen for one
hundred yards and a touchdown his first series, the first
couple of plays. Okay, had to get used to things
a little bit, but that's how it goes. But you
look at what he did in his totality. Did lead
them down, did throw a touchdown, did lead them down
what could have been an easy, makeable field goal, but
the Raiders missed it. The door is open for him
(12:23):
to start, and if he plays well in the next
two games, there's going to be nothing stopping him from starting.
He's going to start this year for the Raiders.
Speaker 3 (12:30):
Yeah, it's the if he's ready, right, that's the thing.
It's like, it's not an automatic. I'm a firm believer
of the old school of if I've got the luxury
of a quarterback where I can bring you along when
you're ready, fine, but if you if you're fully baked. Right,
he had a good year at Cal. You go and
see what he did last year to win the Heisman,
to win the national title, and as you said, he
(12:53):
is elusive the line. They've got their center man and
bringing in Linderbaum, so that's great. Still have some work
to do. You've got enough weapons on the outside genty.
Hopefully he's not hitting the backfield seven out of every
eight carries like he was a year ago. But you know,
Mindeoz is gonna run himself into trouble too, right, he
(13:14):
tried to. And there was one plays his little brothers
in the booth and they're talking about ah this and that.
Speaker 1 (13:19):
Same haircut like his little brother, same exact haircut, like.
Speaker 3 (13:24):
You know, a little snarky, Hey, you and your brother,
do you have this dance? Do you do this whatever?
And then he got outside the pocket. He got absolutely
flatt because he didn't get rid of the ball, and
the kid deadpanned Mom's not gonna like that one. Yeah, no, no, no,
you mom, you know you'd like to have that one back.
But it's the idea that if he's ready to go,
(13:45):
then yeah, certainly you're never gonna find a long stretch
of week games. You got Miami to start. Okay, there's
there's your battle for in theory the bottom at the
Chargers at New Orleans. Everybody's darling as we go deeper
into the preseason versus Kansas City in Las Vegas, at
(14:05):
New England and then home against Buffalo and the Rams.
So first half of the season, yeah, some pretty pretty
heavyweight squads. But if he's shown you and he's the
aptitude's been there, sure I got no problem with it.
You're not on the hook for a lot of money
for Kirk Cousins, and if anything, you'd love to keep
him in bubble wrapped to a degree so he's tradable.
Speaker 1 (14:28):
Well, that's the other thing, is like, if if Mendoza
plays really well, they still have Aiden O'Connell, and if
Cousins still throws the football, well you can now it's
it's you know, they signed him to this contract, you
pay him twenty were you gonna pay him twenty million. No,
you need a quarterback that bad, you're gonna pay him
that money. Well, but it's a thing of if he's
on the roster next year. A lot of the money
for this year is being paid by the Falcons. So, uh,
(14:49):
it's it's fuzzy math, but I don't think it's you know,
something that they're beholden to.
Speaker 3 (14:55):
Uh. And if a team gets desperate, I don't know,
like say the Rams, that they wouldn't come a calling.
Speaker 1 (15:02):
Exit up out of Fresca, exit swalling down the Jason

is wide open. Fernando Mendoza, consider test number one ast
two more to go, because if he has a bad
game in one of those too, it's easy for the
Raiders to say, okay, not quite ready, defenses through something
a little bit different at him. But if he aces
all three of these tests he's starting, will we just

call him seeing puegos? Do I like that?

If if Burrow is Bear and Nicky is the Bengals,

then Sarah is the rest of the NFL. And you
know they're in the car and Sarah's talking about, Hey,
life could be great with me. I don't know why
with Nicky as other NFL teams, man, everything is great
and then what happens next happens. That's kind of how
the Bengals need to watch out because every other team
is going to look so much more attractive to Joe
(19:46):
Burrow if this season goes bad for the Bengals.
Speaker 3 (19:49):
Oh, you've seen it in their franchise history, right, go
back to Carson Palmer looking around, going I'm getting bludgeoned
and what is this working out for me? Now he
ended up becoming a Raider, So so how much better
did it?
Speaker 2 (20:01):
Really? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (20:02):
But you hope for if you're Joe Burrow that history
does not repeat itself in that regard. But the same
kind as the parallel right when we look at quarterback.
Great assets on the offensive side, usually one or two defenders,
but not a defensive jugger out the offensive line, usually
pretty shoddy. And when we see him take a hit
(20:24):
here at the start of a preseason game like this
could be a long one. Now, there were a team
that has gotten a lot of pub as I mentioned,
when you talk about Chase Brown, you talk about the
receivers and what you have offensively, that you have an opportunity.
But you look at the division. We've talked a little
bit about the Steelers. We'll get back into them a bit,
(20:46):
the Ravens in the post Horribaugh era. I'm intrigued. Right,
it pays a Flowers, You got Derreck Henry back for
another run, and then well Cleveland's just good enough to
mess things up. In other words, they'll win four, yeah,
one of which or maybe bold against your Bangles, or
maybe both, maybe both, But but just the idea. If
(21:08):
you're Joe Burrow, I mean, it's a long road. I
talk about it frequently. Right, we had that the Super
Bowl was here in LA and that was supposed to
be the beginning of a long process of the Bengals
running rough shot over the NFL. All those Bengal fans leaving. Boy,
that was a fun year. Can't wait to be back.
It's like hold on, hold on, and here we are
(21:28):
years later, going, yeah, it hasn't gotten any better, and
Joe's missed a lot of time.
Speaker 1 (21:34):
Bengals gotta walk around with that cinder block. Nobody come
after our guy. Nobody you go near my guy? Wait,
do you see what I do to you? Why?
Speaker 3 (21:45):
Why are the Bengals They don't want to pay for anything,
but they're trying to force extra personnel to travel with
Joe Burrow at all times, and they're insisting that they
get to hold his phone. This is that kind of
check in on Joe Burrow every five second. Crazy man,
Joe Burrow, please stand That's how it goes.
Speaker 1 (22:07):
So. Uh. Meanwhile, we're gonna make sense of something Jerry
Jones said today that doesn't make sense. But I can
explain it, and not only explain it, but tell you
why I agree with what he's doing and how this
(22:28):
could be a huge sea change for the Cowboy. It's
a lot to do, Yeah, it's a lot, a lot, hefty, hefty.
I am a professional. I've done this, yeah, so I
can do it. The one year anniversary of the Micah
Parsons trade is upon us, and Jerry Jones was asked
(22:48):
about that today and he said, hey, I would absolutely
do that trade again because it helped him open him
up to things that maybe he wouldn't have done before.
And I get what he's saying. Now you're going to
listen and not understand what he's saying, But I get
what he's saying. I'll explain it all. Don't worry. I'll
explain everything. But just to understand that why this is
(23:11):
such a big deal for Jerry Jones to talk about
the anniversary or the Micah Parsons trade the way he did.
Here he is trying to explain just why the Parsons
trade was so good and why he would do it again.
Speaker 2 (23:24):
It's like going to Las Vegas with some extra money
in your pocket, or going out there with the babies
new pair of shoes and formal money in your pocket.
It can't be as good as a crapshooter as you
are when you've got the baby's new pair of shoes
throwing out there with it. So in a way this
actually created a menial part to us and to my
(23:47):
roll in it with me to step out and make
the moves and take the if you will, risks that
are involved in in which they are to be where
we are today with the complete makeover of the defense.
Speaker 1 (23:59):
All right, a mental thing with me trying to understand
what he was talking about. But I can do it.
Speaker 3 (24:03):
But I like the way he said created a mental thing.
Speaker 1 (24:06):
Yeah, like, hey, I'm trapped in this, or I've created
a mental thing when I was talking about this. But
baby's new pairs of shoes. Okay, So, first of all,
Jerry Jones is mentioning a reference that is probably seventy
years old. The baby needs a new pair of shoes
while you're gambling. Maybe if you're old enough, you've seen
a black and white TV show or some kind of
show from the sixties where someone's gambling and rolling dice, going,
(24:29):
come on, seven, baby needs a new pair of shoes.
It was just a thing to say that people did,
to say, Hey, this brings me luck gambling, Right, baby
needs a new pair of shoes. They would roll the dice.
Speaker 3 (24:40):
Right cultural Oregon origin street dice games earliest appearances and
like newspapers around eighteen ninety.
Speaker 1 (24:48):
Yeah, it's a long time, yeah, a long time, Like
I remember hearing that reference when I was a kid.
Grub baby needs a new pair of shoes. But here's
Jerry Jones saying, it's like gambling when you already have
a new pair of shoes. I can explain this speak
Jerry Jones, I can explain translator. Oh boy, I mean
I'm winded by it. And you know the diet coke.
But this is what Jerry Jones means by is that
(25:10):
making the Micah Parsons trade has opened him up to
a different way of running the Dallas Cowboys. Okay, and
it's a valuable thing, and it makes things different in
trying to put a team together when you are gambling
with more assets, right like the baby. He says, you
know this is like gambling when you already have the
(25:33):
baby's new pair of shoes. Right, So now, what is it?
I know, I know, I know, trust me, trust me.
This is what I mean by is that the old
Jerry Jones, and as Jerry Jones run the Cowboys for
thirty years, would have been I drafted Micah Parsons. He's
a star because I drafted him. I'm giving him money
and this has turned out to run the Dallas Cowboys
into ruin because the guys that Jerry Jones has wanted
(25:55):
to pay because he sees them as his players. He
drafted them, whether it's Dak or Ezekiel Elliott. I've given
them money and what's happened. It's ruined the team because
they're too top heavy and they're not deep where they
need to be. They're not deep at the right positions.
So this is Jerry Jones doing things like paying Ezekiel
Elliott all that kinds of money to watch Ezekiel Elliott
(26:16):
just turn into a guy, right, And that was a bet,
Like when you could have turned that and turn Ezekiel
Elliott and flipped him into more assets. Right. So that's
the way Jerry Jones had always done things. But now
being forced into this trade by Micah Parsons, didn't want
to stay. He wanted to go. What did Jerry Jones do?
He got a bunch of assets that he's turned into
first round picks that he hopes to make a big
(26:39):
difference in the defense this year, getting assets to make
the big trade with the Jets to bring in Quinn Williams,
who's a big disruptor defensive line. He's terrific. They gave
him money for a couple of years, not one of
those big eight year deals, but three years a hundred
millennis that's what he's worth. So okay. Jerry Jones normally
wouldn't have done stuff like that. Normally would just say, well,
here's Mike, I want to pay him. He's the best,
(27:02):
one of the best defensive players in the NFL. We're
gonna do this. But the situation with Micah got so
out of control he had no choice but to trade
him out of his comfort zone. But what did I
do with all the assets? Now? The Cowboys right now,
you can argue you are better than they were at
this point last year. They are healthier offensively, they found
a way to move their money around to keep some
of the big players at different positions. Their defense is
(27:24):
better than it was a year ago. All you got
to do is be league average. Got to be top
five defense. But if your league average, you have improved
enough in the NFC East that maybe you are the
team to beat in that division. So in a year,
because this was foisted upon him all of a sudden,
this is a different way. He is looking at the
Dallas Cowboys. Now, maybe every guy that comes up for
a contract extension. Isn't someone he's gonna automatically pay. Well,
(27:47):
we got to pay Michael Parsons because he gets to
the quarterback. You know, there's a lot of guys get
to the quarterback, right, But if you have a shut
down corner, you want to pay defensive tackle that stops
to run. Whatever it is. Hey, these are the guys
I have to go pay. So maybe now Jerry Jones,
he's a different way to build the team, which is
better news for the Cowboys because quite honestly, the Cowboys
had to take chances. They had to do something different
(28:07):
than the way they were just banging their heads against
the wall, continuing to build these top heavy teams like
they have the last thirty years. So there's Jerry Jones
making his whole. Hey, I'm gambling with the baby's booties,
with the baby's new pair of shoes because I don't
have Micah Parsons, but I have way more assets. I
have more I can do. So it's Jerry Jones doing
(28:28):
Jerry Jones things. But that's what he's meaning, and that's
why this is such a big day for the Cowboys,
such a big way, because he now maybe is seeing
the Cowboys differently where oh, I don't always have to
pay these guys, and maybe I can trade them and
the assets are better. And he's seen the last year
where oh, I've traded Micah and it's worked out because
I have this player and this player this player, and
(28:50):
I have this draft pick that I can turn into
this player. Oh. Now I see how it's going where
I mean, I guess you want to just say, but
thirty years Jason, I know, but let's just celebrate. He's
very late to the part, but he got there.
Speaker 3 (29:00):
But everybody comes to things in life when when it's
their time, right, you can't you get to force someone
to mature, like just because they pass another birthday or
or have a graduation or whatever the case is. Like, No,
I mean, it's it's it's tough. It's frustrating. With Jerry Jones,
you've watched it and you've seen iterations where they seemingly
(29:22):
have built decent rosters and then all of a sudden,
you have situations guys got sick, and remember the team
they had, and then Travis Frederick got sick and the
offensive line crumbled there, which rendered Ezekiel Elliott ineffective. But
you look at the circumstance these years. Now you bring
(29:42):
in Bullard, you bring in Thompson, you talk about Williams,
You've rebuilt your defense. And for Michael Parks, it's a
great player. And you always love to start with great players,
but if it's going to preclude you from doing it
and create such a divide and where it was in
the battle that Jerry Jones had with Michael Parson's agent
(30:04):
and feeling disrespected and the PA gets involved in all
of that. It's the new way of doing things, and
sometimes you have to come to things in a harsh
moment of losing what you loved, what you had. And
that's it with Michael Parsons. He would have loved for
him to be a cowboy forever, be a Hall of Famer,
it be that guy. But circumstance has changed, and now
(30:28):
you move on and you've got a better team. The
Eagles are a slight favorite over the Eagles, all right,
the Eagles slightly over the Cowboys. Uh. And then it's
a bit of a fallback if you want to throw
money in the fountain for the Giants or the Commanders.
Speaker 1 (30:43):
Now. Now, don't don't get me wrong, I'd love to
give Michael Parsons that new pair of shoes. But when
I go into the casino and I have the pair
of shoes, if he doesn't have shoes, it's tougher to
get to the quarterback. If you're not wearing shoes, it
does work. There's no shoeless Micha Parsons like shoeless Joe Jackson.
But if I have the shoe, then I'd be able
to get the shoes. I could put the shoes on,
or I could give the shoes to somebody else and
(31:04):
they can get to the quarterback. Now, earlier, Jerry, you
said booty or Booty's booties booties John David booty quarterback,
and tried to sign him, was very high on him,
but but but couldn't get him. So that's how that
worked out.
Speaker 3 (31:17):
I just wanted to make sure you plural plural, made
that a plural word there, because otherwise we were talking
about something completely different, And.
Speaker 1 (31:25):
Make sure you know that. Before I signed Quinn Williams,
I made sure that he had a pair of shoes
and he was gonna he was gonna wear him and
that's how he was gonna Because again, when you play,
when you're playing with your hand in the dirt. It's
it's difficult to to really, you know, when you can't
can't dig into the dirt because you don't have shoes on.
That's a difficult thing. So if I have the shoes,
I could give the shoes to whoever I want to
(31:46):
give the shoes to. I could also turn those shoes
into maybe a different pair of shoes. And then all
of a sudden, I'm at the bust of brown store
or stride right, and I'm getting all kinds of shoes
for people. And you get a pair of shoes, and
you get a now oprah of giving shoes areway yeah,
And now my whole team is in shoes and the
other team is not wearing shoes, and we should win
that game.

The Jackson the green there plural yeah, plural, plural yeah, pluralizing.
It's not an easy word to say for for this
