tyrack dot com. The way tire buying should be Today
(00:51):
was trade deadline Day in Major League Baseball. While we
thought some teams were gonna be sellers, were actually buyers.
The padres want to trading nobody and we thought everybody
was out there. Uh, there are big winners, there are
big losers, and then there's a truth that I don't
think people are gonna really like. So let's deal with
(01:12):
the winners first. What we have here. Here, here's the winners,
because honestly, the Mets are winners. The Mets are winners, Jason.
The Mets are winners because they traded away a lot
of older players who weren't as good as they were,
and you weren't gonna go into next year saying we're
relying on these players, because if you did that and
then they stunk, then you were stuck again. So they
(01:33):
decided let's get out a few months early. They've restocked
their farm system. I firmly believe they're gonna be buying
players in the offseason because that's what Steve Cohen does.
The Mets are big winners. You had to he's gonna tea.
He's guys official, he's snaking everybody. Yeah, we're out, We're out,
(01:53):
We're out. Suddenly boom show. Ay, here's five hundred million
dollars for how long? Ten years? No? Two years?
Speaker 2 (02:00):
Sign here?
Speaker 3 (02:01):
Wow?
Speaker 4 (02:02):
Look at you?
Speaker 5 (02:03):
No, look I can't go in uh full W because
this this has been a catastrophe.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
Full W.
Speaker 6 (02:09):
Trade deadline not about this is not about the season.
It's about no no, no, no, no no no no.
Trade deadline is not about how many games we've lost
or how did how disappointing it is, or losing a
game on a delayed off bok.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
No, it's about what did you get?
Speaker 4 (02:24):
What did you?
Speaker 1 (02:24):
So here's what you did to minutes we show? Okay,
I mean W like James Winson. So I'm meeting W.
I meeting w. W.
Speaker 5 (02:32):
Remind me not shake his never shake my hand out.
I slapped you upside the head, doesn't met you.
Speaker 4 (02:39):
Stop old man in the back of the W.
Speaker 1 (02:43):
So we'll get to your We'll get to your team
that apparently players don't want to come play for a minute. Okay,
we'll get to look.
Speaker 5 (02:51):
At where that well, that that remains to be seen.
That's fun, fun theory for twenty twenty four. I can't wait.
But in the Inroum Frostburg, come on, mats as to
what they did today. They took magic means from an
organization that we've seen players evolve in and come to
(03:13):
be fruitful MLB players right a lot of other organizations.
It's like, all right, this guy was our number one prospect.
He's stunk to fire all the scouts.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
We're done. The entire time Harmon's talking, I'm making a
W so he's watching me make a W.
Speaker 5 (03:28):
Him his arm. You see his arms getting twitchy there.
Speaker 1 (03:33):
They are getting all tired. It's still hard to It's
just it's hard. It's hard to see you through the W.
So that that's why I'm trying to moving a little bit.
That's what it is.
Speaker 5 (03:42):
Well, you're not used to seeing them, so that W
stands for so get getting written. They're terrible.
Speaker 4 (03:50):
They don't.
Speaker 5 (03:50):
They don't have any of those either, which is why
they've traded everybody. Goodbye, mister Berger. You had a good run,
but the you got rid of the salary and that,
and that's one of the big pieces to it. But
you you spent poorly. Did you learn any lessons? I
hope so, but I'm not. I'm not optimistic. What lesson
have we lesson have we learned? Older players with names
(04:12):
make a splash because I want to be seen as
the cool owner. I want to be seen as I'm
the guy. I mean, I go directly to the fans
on Twitter slash.
Speaker 4 (04:21):
That workout didn't didn't work out?
Speaker 5 (04:23):
So well, you know, he bought all in and sure,
Gilbert might be a beast, might develop into the next
great thing. He might go into the Mets organization and
they ruin him, just like Cyndergard claims, just like they've
ruined it almost everybody.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
Sure, no, that could help it.
Speaker 5 (04:40):
But the possibility is there. I mean, you were cursing
about Brett Bady before, right, He was supposed to be
the chosen one, wasn't he He's like Anakin. Oh, there
he is, and he's terrible, terrible at the plate, he's
terrible in the field. And you know what, because your
farm system sucked and you spent all that money on
those aging out starting pitchers, at least for you, they'll
(05:03):
go be great somewhere. Else is that he got rushed
to the big leagues and he was ready and maybe
in that farms just to be never would be. And
that's what I have to worry about for mister Gilbert now.
But I also worry about your guy just saying I
got a lot more money when that one comes roight.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
Yeah, what's wrong with that's what you want? I got
a lot more money? Yeah yeah, But the problem is
I'll spend it. You got the same GM and the
same owner, and what are they gonna do. They're gonna
agree on the same process and by an they're gonna
have a different GM trust we have a different GM.
You're gonna say different. Oh well, no, he may stay,
but David Stearns will be above him, the guy he's
wanted for three years from the Brewers. Now he's a
(05:39):
consultant and go back to old guy. The Mets can
hire him. They're gonna have a new guy running there.
Uh yes, David Searn's gonna run it. He's gonna make
sure No. David is a.
Speaker 5 (05:49):
Guy that wants the way that.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
Look, the Mets did what they needed to do. They're
winners today. They sold they got really good prospects the
other winners. And Frostburg's gonna hate this, and a lot
of people are gonna hate this, and it kind of
makes Framber Valdez is no hitter with a big exclamation
point on it, because look a ninety three pitch no
hitter tonight by Valdez. He was the astros ace and
(06:16):
they were looking for someone else. We need another A
two to come in because as good as we are,
we know when it gets to the postseason we need
something else. They go and get Verlander, who for the
rest of this season is gonna be fine on He's
had low pitch count so far, he's at low mileage
because he got hurt for the beginning of the year.
The rest of this year will be fine for Justin Verlander,
(06:38):
going back to where he likes the pressure of a
Pennant race. He's gonna give maybe another mile or two
hour on his fastball where it wasn't gonna happen in
New York.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
Now.
Speaker 1 (06:47):
Can you count on him next year when he's doing
a lot more money And after that that's where it
gets bad. But the rest of this year Verlander will
be fine for the Astros. It's why he was able
to bring back such a high return for the Mets.
The Mets got a lot for him. Get ready for
the Astros in the World Series again again. I know
we thought all we're moving past it. The Orioles are
really good and the Rays are really good. And look
(07:08):
at the Rangers. Get ready for the Astros in the
World Series again. As good as the Rangers have been
their big run differential, the Astros have been there the
entire run this season. All they are doing is getting better.
And at the deadline when the four teams, I would say,
the four best teams in the American League all needed
to do things. The Orioles did nothing. The Rays did nothing.
(07:31):
Texas Scott Scherzer, who's been declining, so it's not like
they got a great guy. Houston did the best thing
they could. They got the best player out there. They're
a half game out of first place. They've been reeling
in the Rangers. I don't see a team that's going
to go crazy, that's going to be able to beat
them in the places. The Orioles are great, they're young,
they're gonna win the division. I told you that they
(07:51):
get Jack Flaherty today, and that's a nice that's an
okay move, But really that's not a moving the needle move,
and neither for the Rays, neither for Tech Texas. You're
gonna find out about shuz Or. Trust me. Oh, I
just need four or five more starts to figure out
my slider. Okay, great, Max, you got it, no problem. Uh,
Houston made the move. They have the championship medal. They
(08:11):
every year. They know how to handle the heat of August,
the Pennant race of of September and October. They're going
back to the World Series. I don't see a team
dethroning them this year. They got what they needed now
in a short series. They're fine, they can try it out.
Valdez and Verlander twice in a short series. Now where
before it was well we got Valdez and maybe Nolan
(08:32):
Ryan will come back a little bit and pitch. Maybe
maybe got Mike Scott to come back.
Speaker 4 (08:36):
I don't know, maybe we can come it.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
So now they've figured out what their worst achilles heel
was and they've turned it into while it's not a
great strength, it's now much much stronger. Get ready for
the Astros back in the world.
Speaker 5 (08:49):
Yeah, Valdez coming off that seventeen and six year in
twenty twenty two, expecting huge things from him three two
nine Era twenty starts, he was eight and seven coming
in tonight.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
So now he's that quintessential Why don't they ever score
an he runs for Framber Valdez.
Speaker 4 (09:05):
That happens, but.
Speaker 5 (09:06):
Bit by bit, right, guys get healthy. You're missing Alvarez
for a good chunk of the run. So you got
him back a couple of weeks ago. So like all
of it trends, well, you know, selfishly, I've been you know,
friends and doing some spots, doing fantasy and whatever out
in Baltimore for a long time. So It was exciting
to see them in a position to go and be
(09:27):
buyers with a great farm system and all of those
things in place, all these young guys performing go find
whether it be Verlander or whatever, big arm and Flaherty
comes in, guy with a four to four e r
A in the nationally and now he's.
Speaker 1 (09:44):
Gonna come to the East. Yay, there's a move. So
you know that that one.
Speaker 5 (09:49):
What I got to say, it was a little bit disappointing,
and all in all, the trade deadline left me feeling
a bit unsatisfied. And I know we had a bunch
of smaller moves over the last two weeks heading into
the deadline to what the appetite thinking maybe there was
a big day. But I think it went back to
the theory I had at the time when those first
(10:09):
moves were made, say by the Angels when they brought
in Mustakis and made that trade with the Mets for
who was it Escobar? Right, So you know that there
weren't very many obvious sellers because right the Cubs were there,
Stroman's gonna be gone, Ballinger's gonna be gone, Stroman was
suddenly gonna be one of the big chips, right one
(10:30):
of the big prizes in the trade down up, we're
taking him back off because we're winning. The Angels decided, well,
we're close enough, let's make Otani happy and show him
we love him and we want to keep him here.
Speaker 1 (10:42):
We're not trading him. Beat it and just on and on.
We had that.
Speaker 5 (10:45):
So this trade deadline a little bit of a dud,
and you could try to spin your way out of
that disaster and best spiral you had there with the Mets.
Speaker 1 (10:55):
Well, look, it's not gonna improve the season. As you
saw what happened tonight. We lost said walk off ball.
Speaker 5 (11:01):
But they played really well and inspired baseball until they did.
Speaker 1 (11:04):
Against the Royals. No, when when you are sitting at
the deadline, you're in one of two categories. You're either
a buyer you're a seller. Right, sometimes we just want
to make a couple of moves to make it seem
like we're buying. We're not really enthused about us winning,
but we don't really want to sell. It's all those moves, right,
Rich Hill, Rich Rich Hill, Honestly, I'll tell you the truth,
(11:26):
Rich Hill is going to be traded every deadline between
now and the year three thousand. Every year he's gonna
be one hundred and twenty five years old. But look
at rich Hill is there, and you're gonna see blank
mountain trending on Twitter. I guess he got traded again.
I mean Richell Rich Hill was, I mean what Rich
Hill is. I think he's sixty years old, but he's
been close to out of the game about seventy. Yes,
(11:46):
I don't shake his hand, he said, no, yeah, I
know you're right.
Speaker 4 (11:49):
I want to do that.
Speaker 1 (11:49):
I mean, really, I think he's sixty. He's absolute, but
one of two categories, because if you're just the safe buyer,
it's well, we know think we're that good, but we
don't think we're that bad, and we don't want anybody
to get mad at us, and we don't want the fans,
so we're gonna go buy a marginal player. No, you're
(12:10):
in one of two categories. You're either a seller and
you got to get better. And the Mets did that,
and they brought in great prospect. Now, you don't know,
but I feel a lot better that they brought in
guys who were the number one, number four ranked prospect
of the Astros, and not number guys outside the top thirty.
So I feel good for what they did, and I
feel good for what the Astros did because they got
the biggest name in the market in a position where
(12:31):
they needed to help the most, and that's the starting
pitch and the rest of their lineup breaks. As you said,
Alvarez came back, everybody is, everybody is hitting top to
bottom in that lineup. They needed to have those couple
of starters and now you can go Valdez and Verlander
back to back, and that's a pretty tough thing to
beat in October.
Speaker 5 (12:47):
Organizational stability, we talk about it all the time in
the NFL, in the NBA, and certainly Major League Baseball.
We've got few franchises where you talk about the flow
through the organization and uh remaining fairly constant. And that's
something the Astros have been able to have, even coming
out of the these scandals. Uh, you've still seen the
(13:09):
level of success. So as much as people are sad
to see it, and we'll we'll hate the next six
to eight weeks of baseball. Yeah, they're gonna be a
tough out. Although I would love to see the upstart
young teams in the Al East give him a run,
I'm not optimistic Jason. Yeah, he said, odo USA pay
you for that astro stake. You wouldn't believe the kind
(13:31):
of cash that comes my way. Are you sure it
was a lot for the way you put it, man,
it was fantastic all that money. Oh my god, it's
so much money. Well, you just got a new trash
can too, Uhcoons, No, that's.
Speaker 1 (13:42):
What the Mets got back as part of the deal
for Verlander. They got both those prospects and the trash can.
Speaker 4 (13:46):
Trash can, that's what the Mets gave ninety million dollars
to at the beginning of the season.
Speaker 1 (13:51):
Now we just we just rented him. We rented you, Gon,
We rented Verlander for one hundred games, and now we
gave more money back. To get all giggity about it.
He told you how it was gonna ask and it
didn't work out.
Speaker 4 (14:04):
Now you're not getting o Tony.
Speaker 1 (14:06):
Jos Stop, Josh stop, you got got you got got
a Twitter And how about a fresco Mike and Swollen
down the Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike
carbon coming gust we get into a sports story that
has the entire country on fire. Right now, that's next
right here, Fox, When's the last time you looked at
your tires. I mean I look at my tires all
(14:27):
the time because I don't look at the baseball standings anymore.

Speaker 2 (15:19):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Oh yeah, that's how your years started, wasn't it.
Speaker 1 (15:37):
Smith should have known, right Edwin Diaz gets hurt celebrating
in the World Baseball Classic. I should have known. That's
how the season's got to the end of it.
Speaker 4 (15:47):
Mike, you know who the artist is behind the tenge?
Speaker 2 (15:49):
Oh I forget tell me Timmy L.
Speaker 4 (15:52):
Trumpet.
Speaker 1 (15:54):
What's the L stand for?
Speaker 4 (15:59):
Not because the el the Mets took tonight, but Timmy L. Trumpet.
Speaker 1 (16:05):
You guys done, You guys done, You guys done, you
guys done. Let it breathe. We lost tonight and we
traded everybody away. We lost tonight. We've been bad all
season long. We're gonna be really bad, and we'll be
good in the off season trade deadline winners. Though. Yea.
(16:29):
I will say this about Timmy Trumpet. You listen to
his other songs. They sound very similar.
Speaker 5 (16:35):
To By the way, nobody owns off seasons like your team.
Speaker 4 (16:40):
Yeah, oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (16:41):
Yeah, when the games aren't playing, My teams are awesome.
So good on Jamper mets Nicks. Oh yeah, we own
the off season. When those pesky games come, you know,
it's very difficult for us, but I'll tell you the
off seasons are great. But we'll have more on the
MLB trade deadline coming up. But we gotta get to the.
Speaker 4 (16:59):
Big low users for the trade deadline. We just talked
about the man.
Speaker 1 (17:02):
No, no, no, that's big winners, tread treaded away, aging,
older players, got younger good players. No, Mets A'm not
gonna be good until thirty twenty six Mats winners.
Speaker 7 (17:11):
I do need to add a comment that Chris, that Jason,
you are right, because I do because Timmy Trumpet's songs
do all sound the same.
Speaker 2 (17:18):
They I do like Flamenco, but it sounds exactly like.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
Yes, it's the same. It's like when Vanilla Ice tried
to go on TV once and say and they said, hey,
you know you kind of stole the Queen Saw, you know,
under pressure. David Bowie, he goes, no, no, if you
listen to their song, it's ding ding ding did da
ding ding, And my song is ding ding ding do
da ding Ding Yeah, oh oh side show bomb no,
oh okay uh. But the story that everybody across the
(17:44):
globe is fired up by the US women's national team
just not even twelve hours or twenty four hours after
a shocking draw to Portugal that luckily moves them onto
the knockout stage of the Women's World Cup, but has
on nothing but ire and fire and brimstone since the game.
They didn't play well. They looked like a bunch of
(18:07):
players out there that hadn't practiced together. And they haven't,
which you know, these other teams, they all play together.
They all practice you. No, no, we're gonna play in
the NWSL for a while. We get together. We're gonna
practice together for maybe a couple of weeks. And yeah,
maybe that's not the right way to go. They look
out of sync. They look like they are still trying
to get to know each other. Are they a little
too overconfident? Do they lack what it takes to win?
(18:30):
After that disappointing loss, watching the post game, as you
and I both did with Rob Stone and Carly Lloyd
and Alexi Lawless, it was a bloodbath. It was like
watching Hey, if you miss Undisputed because it's all for
a little while. Yeah, watch that, Watch that post game
and watch what everybody had to say, how they couldn't
(18:50):
wait to jump up and down on the United States
and a jump up and down in the US women's
national team about how bad they were.
Speaker 4 (18:58):
Everything was bad.
Speaker 1 (18:59):
They didn't like how they looked during the game, Carly Lloyd,
didn't like at the end they were dancing with the
fans and signing autographs after they moved on. Nothing nobody
liked anything. Here's a sample.
Speaker 4 (19:11):
Here's a bit of.
Speaker 1 (19:12):
Carly Lloyd, former US women's national team star, from the
Fox post game last night.
Speaker 2 (19:16):
I have never.
Speaker 8 (19:17):
Witnessed and just seeing these images for the first time
right now on the desk, I have never witnessed.
Speaker 1 (19:23):
Something like that.
Speaker 8 (19:24):
There's a difference between being respectful of the fans and
saying hello to your family, but to be dancing, to
be smiling, I mean, the player of the match was
that post You were lucky to not be going home
right now?
Speaker 1 (19:37):
All right, now, there's a couple of big things to
get to from this. First one is, honestly, I thought
they were little over the line, all right, because it's
not like they got eliminated. They moved on, and part
of the way it goes through that at some point
in the game you understand, Okay, Portugal is better than
we thought. We're not as good as we thought, but
a tie gets us through. Everybody knows that, and they
(20:00):
did what they needed to do. Yes, they had a
really anxious moment and a ball that hit the post,
but in the end they didn't lose and were signing autographs.
They moved on, right, And when you are playing to
win the World Cup, you can't let every single thing
get you down, even if you don't. They know they
didn't play well, but they're still alive and they have
days to go by until they have to play again
(20:22):
and a chance to go and win. So yeah, I
can get why they're okay signing autographs Bill, Right, they
moved on, But also they're in a bubble. They're playing
a tournament halfway around the world. They have no idea
what's going on on social media in the United States,
what people are saying about them. Hey, we didn't play well,
(20:42):
but we moved on. Okay, Well, I think they can
sell check. They could, but they're not checking at that point,
and they and not like anybody's coming out of the
stand saying this is what people are tweeting right now.
It's a game that was in the middle of the night,
so right after that's over. They didn't play well, but
they moved on. Hey, we got to be in a
positive frame of mind that we can still win this tournament.
So yeah, let's take some pictures, let's dance a little bit.
Speaker 4 (21:02):
I don't have it.
Speaker 1 (21:04):
It's not a big deal of that if they lost
or were doing it. Yeah, but they still were able
to do what they needed to do and move on.
There's sixteen other other teams that are saying, we'd love
to be able to be in that position even if
we don't play well. So that I felt like the
crew was watching the game on the set the entire time.
And these are all former players, and Rob Stone's been
an analyst and a play by play man for soccer
(21:25):
for a long time. All they're doing is watching the
United States play poorly and every missed opportunity, with every
time that the United States made a play that one
of them went, what the hell is going on here?
I don't get it. They just got madder and madder
and matter and I could tell you, I bet you
the energy on that set was they were like a
(21:46):
horse getting ready to be to be just released from
them from the paddock and just go out and just
run like I gotta let me go, you gotta let
me go. So going through all of this being former players, yeah,
they're gonna be mad. And they all came on set
and they were mad. And that's why it was a
little shocking, a little taken aback by all the overall negativity.
(22:06):
They didn't say anything wrong, but in the end it
was okay, hang on, they still moved on. There's another
chance to go. Let's worry about let's think about fixing this,
because it's not always just hey, this is all doom
and gloom. Because if you didn't know the result and
you watch them, you watch them talk after the game,
you would say, oh, man, I say they lose three
to nothing, four nothing, they get knocked out. They win
a game in the knockout round. So a little bit
(22:28):
over the line when when honestly there's a bit of
that disconnect because you're playing halfway around the world, maybe
you don't realize, Okay, if we do this, people are
gonna go crazy. If that game happened in Chicago, probably
doesn't happen.
Speaker 5 (22:39):
But I would say this right in terms of the
general fan fandom and US, I mean, we have no
problem being critical of things we see. That's what we
do for four hours a day. We watch games live,
we comment as they're happening. We go through these stories,
and we bring you. I like to think, you know, raw,
(23:00):
honest opinions on this stuff, well reasoned, well researched, nuanced whatever.
It's not hot take nonsense. Most of the time your
mets love gets over the top sometimes at you. But
just the idea of the disconnect between you. We can
criticize the game and everything that didn't happen properly for
the US. There the dancing at all, Like you've got
(23:24):
another problem with however, this team is right, there's two
different things going on, Like if you don't think that
you know everything is orchestrated as well as maybe it
was when Carly Lloyd was at her peak and she
sees that some have just gone straight to you're just
being bitter because you're not there anymore.
Speaker 1 (23:42):
Look, human emotion is a very real thing. Well, it
didn't well with her with the US women's team. She
wanted to be playing more and she couldn't get off
the bench, and so it did not end great for her.
So I wonder how much that's gone into a little
bit of this is what I see from you, a
giant pie.
Speaker 5 (23:56):
Maybe there's a little bit right some former teammates still
getting their moment's in the sun and celebrating even though
the performances aren't the same, and look to the end
game of it all succeed and proceed. You needed to tie,
and everybody hates ties. I don't think anybody likes any
of that, but that's the way the game is drawn up.
They needed a draw or to win to advance, and
(24:19):
they got outplayed. Criticize that component. There's plenty of meat
on the bone. There, a little bit of a dance
because whatever music was playing over the loud speakers and
smiling and signing autographs, taking pictures whatever. Like Sure, I
guess there's something to be said for in the moment
(24:40):
you have the xale and that should be about all
you're doing before heading back.
Speaker 1 (24:44):
I understand that to a point. Yeah, but you also
have supporters that came halfway across the world walk down
the corner.
Speaker 5 (24:52):
They spent a lot of money, yes, and a lot
of time to make that flight, to make that trip
to come support you. It is part of your job
and responsibility to even if you're faking that smile, to
give them the best cheese you can when they go
to flash and take that photo, Oh could we get
another one, bigger smile like you're not doing the Hey here,
(25:16):
I'm Axel Rose because he's been in the news a
bunch showing up and people taking their picture with him
where you're just mean mugging the camera behind your sunglasses
and that's the stance that a lot of people have
taken them. That's fine, That's not what they're looking to do.
They're trying to create some good memories and yes they
can exhale and go into the next round.
Speaker 1 (25:34):
Are there a lot of concern? Hell yeah, and criticize
everything about the game, the celebration, Eh, protest a bit
too much. The two big takeaways from this game in
front of the US women's national team that that's not
being talked about is because I agree with all the
criticism of they're not in sync.
Speaker 5 (25:53):
Do they.
Speaker 1 (25:56):
Ride the line between being arrogant and confident? Do they
just expect to win? Do they need to put more
blood into it. All of these things I get and
I understand Carly Lloyd saying it and Lexi Lawla saying it.
That's all good. Well, you've run through teams for years.
But there's two things that people need to understand. One
is a bigger point, and that's that the United States
(26:20):
women's team is not as good as they were the
last ten years. They're just not. Just because they put
the uniform on and you hear about how great a
player Sophia Smith is or how great a player Trinity
Rodman is doesn't mean their World Cup caliber players who
are going to be the next Alex Morgan and Meghan Rapino.
(26:40):
We've had a great run to go from Mia Hamm
and Julie Foudi to Abby Wambach and Meghan Rapino and
Alex Morgan, but it doesn't always happen. And just because
you're a player playing on the US women's national team,
your status is inflated. Yes, they came in as the favorites,
but as we've seen, they're not the favorites. They can win,
can also lose to anybody. They're not as good as
(27:02):
they were, and we conflate that with they're the US
women's national team, and they've been the most dominant team
going on twenty years now. Whether it's Brianna Scurry or
Hope Solo or listen there, it doesn't matter. But they're
just not that good. They're just not as good as
you think. So when you understand that, you understand that, Okay,
(27:23):
there's some things and there's things that fall through the cracks.
The biggest thing that I saw on you and I
talked about this before the show tonight. Maybe you watch
the game the last couple of games and you heard
some of the analysts say, oh, they're not playing fast.
They're playing a little bit too predictable where their balls
are going. They're not playing fast. It's not that they're
not playing fast, they're just not fast. The United States
(27:47):
team speed is not good. And you watch these games
and you see that, unlike years past, our forwards aren't
bearing down the side in front of the defenders. The
defenders are even with them.
Speaker 4 (28:00):
Right.
Speaker 1 (28:00):
You're not seeing Alex Morgan blow by anybody, or Megan
Rapino blow by anybody, or or get enough open space
for a big across the field pass. You're not seeing midfield.
You're not seeing Lindsay Horan and rose level be able
to create their space, get all the way down outside
the eighteen and either take a big shot or or
or pass to the side where you can get a
big scoring chance. You just don't see that. You see
(28:22):
the other teams and the other countries are faster, They
are in our passing lanes. They are close to our players,
to our star players who cannot evade them. The United
States just isn't fast. And I don't think it's a
it's a question of fitness, because I know Carly Lloyd
brought it up. They don't look fit. Yeah, when they
played in the in the in the in the Olympics
(28:44):
three years ago, they didn't look fit. They looked tired,
They looked like they couldn't even get a breath, So
maybe that was about conditioning this. They just don't look fast.
And all the other teams look faster than we are,
and they have forwards who break through our defense and
get big shots. Well, we're the ones clawing trying to
get back. And that's a big issue because it's really
(29:04):
hard to win if you don't have good team speed. Now,
slow teams don't win championships in sports, especially in soccer.
Speaker 5 (29:11):
Yeah, I think a lot of it comes down to
we're trying to figure out how to to morph between
the old age, the the Golden Age and the last
couple of World Cups and integrating these new legs, new bodies.
We talk about it from just a continuity perspective of
you're not practicing in a long run up. It's like,
(29:33):
all right, you left your NWSL team, Like everybody meeting
at the airport.
Speaker 1 (29:38):
Hey, where are you from? Uh?
Speaker 5 (29:40):
Well, we just had a road game here. Oh cool,
you you came in through what through Salt Lake City?
Speaker 4 (29:46):
Coll?
Speaker 5 (29:46):
Uh that's and now we'll fly on to New Zealand together.
As opposed to it, we've been training for the last
three months together, getting timing down, get integrating all the
young talent and and Rodman and I think Smith's going
to be a beast for years to come. But she's
been neutralized. The speed is is equaled across and I'd
(30:09):
be curious, I haven't done the deep dive on the
All right, what's the average age here here? Here in experience?
But watching the the first matches in this tournament is
you see a lot of a lot of young players,
and we're watching the faces and the level of talent
across the globe rise up, and that takes nothing. I
(30:32):
think the two can work in parallel right where the
US isn't at its peak and in that transitional mode,
why everybody else rises up. I can't attribute, you know,
one hundred percent of the pie to the ladder and
ignore where we're at trying to get the three piece. Sorry,
I'll pay pat riley Is seven dollars seven seven dollars,
(30:55):
But trying to get that with some veteran players who
now you've got to monitor their minutes. Now you've got
to try to decide, you know, how many touches where
are they best utilized? In this process, we're not forcing
corner kicks to the great level that we had a
lot of shots on goal against Portugal. Did any of
them really feel like there was a threat?
Speaker 2 (31:17):
No?
Speaker 5 (31:18):
I mean nothing, nothing big. I mean the play of
the game and from the Carly Lloyd quote was well
it was a goal post. The best defender on the
squad because that was a wide open look and just
missed it. So it's curious as we get into this
next stage, the knockout stage of things, to see what
they'll they'll bring to bear. But you know the the
(31:39):
aforementioned youngsters are gonna have to be big. Big in
her hand who we celebrated actually have a T shirt
on the way. Madeline decided that's that's the new one.
Speaker 1 (31:50):
She's gonna have to be big and not be checking out.
In the seventieth minute, Twitter at how about a Fresco,
Mike gets swollen down the Jason Smith Show with my
best friend Mike Carmon Time Now to find out what's
trending in the wide world of sports. Now you know
everything you need to know about the US women's national team.

how's that for you?
Speaker 2 (32:09):
We got it?
Speaker 7 (32:10):
Starting with from Bervaldez of the Houston Astros pitching a
no hitter on Tuesday night against the Cleveland Guardians at
Minute Made Parking. Here was the final out on KMBE.
Speaker 2 (32:21):
Here's the o t the Gallagher broken fat soft liner,
Peeda catches at and a no hitter frober.
Speaker 7 (32:29):
Valdez Astros on a two or nothing is Valdez struck
out seventy faced the minimum twenty seven batters, allowing only
a fifth inning walk that was erased on a double play.
At Wrigley On Tuesday night, the Cubs tied a franchise
record with seven home runs and a twenty to nine
win over Cincinnati. Dansby Swanson hit two of them. He
(32:49):
also had five Rbijan Soto of the Padres tow RBI
and an eight to five win at Colorado. The Kansas
City Royals scored three in the bottom of the tenth
inning to beat the Mets seven to six, the winning
run scoring on a basis loaded bock by the Mets.
Now earlier in the show, we attempted to play the
highlights of that game ending back by the Mets on
(33:12):
Royal's radio. However, it was maliciously sabotaged and erased by Jason.
Speaker 2 (33:20):
Smith, who if I have no comment, I have no
comments on this into our.
Speaker 7 (33:24):
System and replaced it with the call of the final
out of the nineteen eighty six World Series. I am
thrilled to say that in the meantime we have re
recorded the Kansas City Royals call of the final out,
not only re recording it, but locking the audio file
and password protecting it so much to Jason's chagrin.
Speaker 1 (33:45):
Here it is.
Speaker 7 (33:48):
There's a flyball after waiting as Jones met for the
world champion.
Speaker 6 (33:57):
Jerry Kousmin being mob.
Speaker 1 (34:01):
Look about this scene listening to Kurt Cowdy in nineteen
sixty nine, Cleon Jones making that catch White Sox legend
Jerry Cousin.
Speaker 9 (34:10):
We do have it.
Speaker 4 (34:11):
You'll hear it next segment. I don't know that we
have it. Actually, oh, I know it's gone.
Speaker 1 (34:14):
It might be gone.
Speaker 2 (34:15):
No, we had it.
Speaker 7 (34:19):
Well, I'll tell you what if I'm the CIA I'm getting.
I'm getting you on the phone as a as a
as a hacker for your country. Well, well done, by
the way, thank you, all right, I'll wear it, next segment,
Thank you.
Speaker 2 (34:32):
Elsewhere.
Speaker 7 (34:32):
On Tuesday night, the Boston Red Sox went against Seattle
six to four. The San Francisco Giants of four to
three win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Mookie Betts hit his
twenty eighth holm run of the Dodgers seven three win
over Oakland. Footnote, by the way, I'm not making this up.
Fox Sports Radio's Ben Maller caught a foul ball in
the Dodgers stadium press box during Tuesday night's game. He
(34:55):
tweeted a picture of the ball. Actually, do we have
the audio of the foul ball coming back to Ben a.
Speaker 4 (35:01):
Pop, foul's back here. Pow ow wow, it really hit me.
I didn't know what's coming back that far.
Speaker 2 (35:10):
Oops, we got that one.
Speaker 7 (35:11):
Next up as well, Yeah that's not I'm sure man
will have a full report coming up at the top
of the hour.

They are.
Speaker 1 (36:57):
The Yankees, big, the Yankees who I don't understand why
Brian Cashman has has gone someone that's like he's like
the driver. What is he's like Tom Cruis and days
a thunder who like drives with his hair on or
to or Tom Cruis in Top Gun where he flies
(37:17):
with his hair on fire. Then he has the accident,
gooz dies and suddenly I can't fly him. I'm going
really safe. I'm really really safe because Brian Cashman has
gone from I will make trades, will bring whatever pieces
we need in. Now he's afraid to trade anybody. He's
afraid to trade any prospect because he's worried about what's
gonna happen if those prospects are good and it backfires
(37:38):
on him. Like that's what that right, Like that's gonna
get him fired. Because that's where that's how he has
evolved over the past few years from will make the
moves we need to, We're not afraid to. Yeah, I
don't know, they make a minor move today. They could
have done something. They're still in position to make the
playoffs and they don't want to trade any of their
(37:59):
young players. They could have done it to any of
their players the last few years, but he refused to
do it. I still remember when they could have had
They could have had to gron for Gary Sanchez, Miguel
Anduhar and no, no, we can't do that.
Speaker 4 (38:10):
We can't do that.
Speaker 1 (38:11):
This is this is Brian Cashman. He has gone to
become so conservative and this is where, Hey, everybody's got
the Yankees where they want them. Brian Cashman won't make
any big moves. The Yankees are gonna be fine. They're
gonna be out of the playoffs. That's great. When Cashman
gets fired, which will happen. Eventually, a new a new
GM is gonna come in make a splash. Then you're
gonna be afraid of the Yankees again.
Speaker 5 (38:30):
Well, I mean they have a few big contracts, but
beyond that, trying to be additive has not been the way.
They make a deal with the White Sox. Uh and
then some cash considerations for another arm and that's really it.
I know in New York absolutely incensed right now that
there's no push. Judge comes back, So you think that's
(38:50):
gonna fix everything. He can't pitch, at least I don't
think he can.
Speaker 2 (38:55):
You never know.
Speaker 1 (38:57):
You never let him try. Maybe he just shows a fastball.
Speaker 5 (38:59):
Maybe you got all your money spent in Stanton and
you can argue with that. Obviously, Judge now getting paid,
Garrett Cole and my guy Carlos Rodon, who's finally actually
pitching every fifth day. But I mean, you got a
lot of money wrapped up there. It doesn't They're operating
like a mid market or lower market team at this point,
(39:20):
and Big Stein, it's got to be salty about it.
Speaker 1 (39:23):
We should be going for it. Dodgers are the other
losers needed a starting pitcher, didn't go get one, and water.
Rodriguez RN gots a win today. What are you talking about?
It got a really good one from the Tigers. But
the Dodgers were on Rodriguez's no trade, didn't want to
go west. They had to do something he didn't like
Los Angeles. Now all the Dodgers have is hope. We
(39:45):
have hope that Walker Buehler comes back. We have to
hope that Julio Arius is healthy and is good. We
have to hope that they do have We got a
hope that maybe Bobby Miller turns into something. They have
too much hope that they were relying on starting pitching
was they he needed to make another move and they
didn't do it. They're the other big loser.
Speaker 5 (40:02):
The pitching is certainly the curiosity. Right from the lineup perspective,
you feel pretty good about where you're at. You got
a couple of superstars, two of the top white three
or four guys that'll be in the MVP balloting when
it's all said and done in Betts and Freeman. Martinez
having himself one hell of a year as well. But
from the pitching side, we're gonna see an awful lot
(40:23):
of Dave Roberts walk into the mound the way things
are currently configured.
Speaker 4 (40:27):
Hey, losers, why don't we do the Player of the night?
Speaker 1 (40:30):

Speaker 1 (40:42):
The Mets, after successfully trading away Justin Verlander, played the Royals.
They blew a one run lead in the eighth and
a two run lead in the tenth thanks to a
throwing error by Brett Baty and Brooks rarely throwing batting practice.
The Royals had the bases loaded two outs in the
bottom of the tenth and before the Mets new reliever
Josh Walker could throw a pitch.
Speaker 3 (41:02):
This happened, Francisco Alvarez calls time and goes out to
the mound for a mound visit. Now the umpires are conferring.
Speaker 1 (41:15):
Oh, they called a puck.
Speaker 2 (41:16):
They called a pok.
Speaker 1 (41:17):
The game is over. They caught the book on Josh
Walker before he even threw a pitch.
Speaker 2 (41:25):
The Royals win at seven to six.
Speaker 1 (41:27):
On a balk of all things Royals Radio Network. That
is so totally Mets, so totally.
Speaker 5 (41:34):
If you're gonna fail fail spectaculary, say you know what,
we won the trade deadline, but pay attention here and
then you won't think.
Speaker 1 (41:41):
About it so much, So totally Mets on the delayed
walk off balk in the tenth inning against the Royal Well,
have you seen it before? No you haven't, Well now
we have special. You're special. Twitter it out about a
fresco Mike and and dumb up next to my foul
(42:01):
ball buddy Ben Mallar.
Speaker 4 (42:02):
Fuck
