Rob and Martin Weiss are amazed by the ending of the Miracle in Michigan, and they place much of the blame on the instant replay process. Michigan legend Jon Jansen joined the show to say the fallout has been worse in the win than it would’ve been with a loss.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
You now have full access to this very fine radio
program for the next three hours. Not two, not three,
not four, not five, not six. Six counts for me
today because I'll wind up doing six hours. That's right.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
Yes, it does work. Thanks, LeBron.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
No matter how you listen in, Fox Sports Radio, FoxSportsRadio.com,
the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 3 (01:07):
Sirius XM Channel 83.

Speaker 4 (01:08):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
And now... Live on YouTube. Do it live. I'll write
it and we'll do it live.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
Do it.

Speaker 3 (01:18):
Thank you, Bill. Say my name.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
Rob Parker.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
Say it again on this holiday.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
Rob Parker. Say his name. Martin Weiss.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
One more time.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
Martin Weiss.

Speaker 3 (01:29):
That's right. And we are indeed the odd couple.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
Martin Weiss filling in for Kelvin Washington on his Labor Day.
And guess what? You'll need our phone number because we are,
without question, the most listener-friendly national sports talk radio show
on the planet.

Speaker 4 (01:47):
Ben Mauer.

Speaker 3 (01:49):
At least when people are still awake. Sorry about that, Ben.
I get it. It's the only time it counts.

Speaker 5 (01:54):
100%.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
Write it down. Commit it to memory.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
877-99 on Fox. For you laymen out there who can't
figure out the letters.

Speaker 3 (02:02):
And numbers, 877-996-6369.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
And if you hear feedback on the line when you
do call in, it's your own fault.

Speaker 3 (02:11):
It means only one thing.

Speaker 6 (02:13):
You forgot to turn down the radio.

Speaker 1 (02:16):
And if you call in here and have a problem
with what we say, tough, because... Well, I'm talking to
you the way I want to talk to you. You
have a problem, turn.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
Off your station. That's right. With that said, always remember.

Speaker 5 (02:29):
The Odd Couple was filmed in front of a live audience.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
That's right.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
Let's go. Big show.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
Let me welcome in my co-host, Martin Weiss, in place
of Kelvin Washington on this Labor Day.

Speaker 3 (02:44):
Martin, how are you?

Speaker 1 (02:45):
Good day to be here, Rob. Absolutely. Nothing controversial at
all going on around the world.

Speaker 3 (02:50):
No, not at all.

Speaker 1 (02:52):
And for people chiming in, listening, we're glad that you're
aboard the On this Labor Day, hope you enjoyed your day,
your day off, whatever you did with the family, if
you had that last barbecue or whatever you got going on.

Speaker 3 (03:06):
Earlier I did the Dan Patrick Show. With Kerry Rose.

Speaker 1 (03:10):
That was great. From 9 to noon here on Fox
Sports Radio. And now a little nightcap with Martin Weiss here. Surprised, honestly,
when I saw you on.

Speaker 7 (03:20):
The freeway back today. Because I saw you and Kerry
streaming already today. So I was like, you're doing it
back to back in the studio?

Speaker 6 (03:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (03:27):
Oh, yeah.

Speaker 3 (03:28):
You didn't think I was coming in?

Speaker 1 (03:30):
You know, on a holiday. I knew you would be working,
but I should have known better.

Speaker 3 (03:34):
Alex, do I come? I always come.

Speaker 5 (03:36):
You live in the studio, Rob Parker.

Speaker 3 (03:37):
Only time I don't is if I'm flying out. That's
the only time.

Speaker 1 (03:42):
I'm leaving town, and it's easier for me to be
at home, get my bags, and go rather than chancing it.

Speaker 3 (03:48):
But other than that, I'm going to be here.

Speaker 5 (03:49):
Well, Scott just texted me, Rob, and he might need
you for the next four hours, too, if you are
up for that.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
What?

Speaker 3 (03:53):
Oh, my God. I can't do that.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
That's a lot.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
All right.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
Hey, let's welcome in the Odd Couple crew because we
wouldn't be able to do this fine radio program without
them on this Magic City Monday.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
Alex is our producer. Alex, you're a hidden talent. One
more time, Alex.

Speaker 6 (04:11):
Alex, you're a hidden talent.

Speaker 1 (04:12):
Garrett is in for Rob G is our producer. What's up?
What's going on, fellas? Good to be here.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
Yeah, absolutely.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
It's the first time you've produced for the Odd Couple, right?
Am I right? That's it, man. Number one of many, hopefully.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
Yes, hopefully.

Speaker 7 (04:27):
Well, you know, those slightly shrinking shoes to fill, as
Rob G. continues his... His weight loss.

Speaker 3 (04:32):
His weight loss.

Speaker 1 (04:33):
His stabbings, we can call. Steve DeSegre's at the anchor desk. Hey, Steve.
He'll keep us updated throughout the program.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
And Elijah... Never heard of him. is our social media guru.

Speaker 1 (04:46):
Man, a lot to get to, Martin, on this Magic
City Monday here on The Odd Couple. Glad you could
join us, and remember, we're a radio show, not a
lame podcast.

Speaker 3 (04:57):
We're going to want to hear from you. That's right.
You can call in.

Speaker 1 (05:01):
This isn't one of those lame podcasts by some former
athlete where you don't have any say in the program.
We value your opinion, and we want to hear from you,
so thanks for Locking in on this holiday with us.

Speaker 3 (05:16):
But let's start with, obviously, the.

Speaker 1 (05:19):
Debacle that happened at the big house, Michigan and Western Michigan.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
And, Martin, that's your alma mater. That's where you went
to school.

Speaker 1 (05:29):
Sure did. Following the Michigan Wolverines. I swore for just
a moment when that thing went down. And for people
who don't know, that was. One second put back on
the clock. It should have been a 12-7 upset victory
for Western Michigan, which would have been an earth-shattering college
football upset if Western Michigan won at the big house.

(05:53):
And instead they put another second on and Michigan wins
the game, 13-12, and just all kinds of craziness. And
like I said, you know, Michigan's known for cheating, and
for just a minute I thought to myself– I looked
for Jim Harbaugh to see if he was on the
sidelines because I just thought, that's what this, you know,

(06:13):
it's always something, some chicanery going on with Michigan. But
give me your thoughts just on, you were actually on
the air, right? I was. I was on the air.

Speaker 7 (06:23):
Me and Garrett, by the way, Saturdays. A little sneak preview.
We're on against most of the big college football games. But, yeah,
we were on as the play happened. From the broadcast,
as you know, we're here talking, so we got the
headphones on. We can't necessarily ascertain what is happening, right?
Why is the play under review? I assume that there

(06:46):
was a defensive penalty at first, and then Steve DeSager
helped us out and told us that they added a
second back onto the clock.

Speaker 1 (06:53):
But the thing with this.

Speaker 7 (06:54):
Is once you saw all of the different reports that
came out, and even Lance Taylor postgame, the head coach
of Western Michigan, making it about not the one. He
said he saw zeros on the clock, yes, but also
Western Michigan gave up that Hail Mary, the second one,
didn't defend it well, and obviously allowed them to.

Speaker 1 (07:15):
He's taking no excuses in that time period.

Speaker 7 (07:18):
And then when you see what the Big Ten officials
came out with afterwards, it seemed to me to be
a correct application of the rules. The problem is the rules.
The problem, instant replay for a play like that should
not exist. Instant replay in general, if you're, I'm for
leaving it all away because instant replay should be to

(07:40):
make calls that are painfully obvious, right? It was not
painfully obvious by any stretch of the imagination that there
was supposed to be time left on that clock. Now,
And this is the other thing about instant replay that
I just don't get. The broadcast teams are not good enough,

(08:01):
do not know the rules well enough, and are not
in tune with the officiating well enough to present a
uniform story, right? Because the officials from top down have
had one side of things. But then when you put
the rules analyst on there immediately after this thing.

Speaker 1 (08:18):
Happens, why do I care? All due respect to the
people who do the job.

Speaker 7 (08:23):
I don't care what a rules analyst 3,000 miles away
has to say. With the XFL, other spring leagues, we
hear the referees debating the call in the moment.

Speaker 1 (08:36):
Herrera. As the call was.

Speaker 7 (08:38):
Being debated, we should have heard what the officials on
the field were saying. I don't care what a former
retired referee who has a nice face on TV has
to say. Because if you hear what the officials are saying, Rob,
in that moment, I still think it was a misapplication
of instant replay.

Speaker 1 (08:59):
I still think Western Michigan should have won that game.

Speaker 7 (09:02):
But the whole conspiracy theory that builds out from it
of this feels like they were cheating, this feels like
they were this or that, You get that because you
have all of this guesstimation when it.

Speaker 1 (09:16):
Was right there clear. We have to see that on TV.

Speaker 7 (09:19):
And if you can't show it on TV, then they
should do away with the whole practice in general.

Speaker 3 (09:23):
Okay, I'm going to say this. I don't care what
anybody says. Western Michigan got jobs.

Speaker 1 (09:29):
And if it was a flip, there's no way they're
giving Western Michigan another play.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
It's not going to happen.

Speaker 1 (09:36):
And for everybody who's watched college football, who all of
a sudden on Saturday night, they tell you there's another clock.

Speaker 3 (09:44):
All these people, what other clock?

Speaker 1 (09:47):
I've watched NFL games where the referees, Martin, when they
tell the clock officials what, put 13 seconds on the
clock when they want to get it right. So the
fans at the ballpark know how much time is left
in the game. It should not be a secret how
much time is left in the game.

Speaker 3 (10:06):
Time out.

Speaker 1 (10:09):
I'm talking about this is what they do. This whole idea.
I never heard of some other clock. We're in 2026.
You got all this other stuff going on. Instant replay.
And now you're telling me you can't sync the clock
so that we all have the same clock to watch.
And fans inside the ballpark know what's going on.

Speaker 3 (10:30):
Okay?

Speaker 1 (10:30):
Mike Pereira, one of the rules, former NFL referees, he said,
come on. Just for them to invoke that at that
moment is outrageous. It just is. And I'm going to
say this. I'm with you on this. And I'm going
to say it loud.

Speaker 3 (10:50):
You know what? I get it.

Speaker 1 (10:52):
I'm not a dinosaur. I'm not living in the past.
I'm okay with human error. And I don't need, I
do not need instant replay on everything. Because if you
watch NFL football every Sunday, guess what? They make mistakes
every freaking Sunday, even with instant replay.

Speaker 3 (11:12):
They don't get all the calls.

Speaker 1 (11:13):
Right, and you're watching and go, those guys back in
New York or wherever, New Jersey in the truck or wherever,
how in the what?

Speaker 3 (11:20):
And they still get it wrong. We don't have everything's
not perfect.

Speaker 1 (11:25):
We don't go, oh, my God, well, Bill Buckner should
have made that catch, that ground ball, right, in the
1986 World Series. So we know if you did that
100 times, he would catch it 199 times. So it's
really an out, and the Mets lose, and the Red
Sox win. No, because humans make mistakes. You know why

(11:46):
they put erasers on pencils? Because people make mistakes. It's okay.

Speaker 3 (11:53):
We don't need everything.

Speaker 1 (11:54):
To be perfect. There is no perfection. And Saturday night
is another example of where we take the joy away
from fans.

Speaker 3 (12:05):
That's what we did.

Speaker 1 (12:06):
That's not what sports is supposed to be. How many
times are you watching a baseball game and a guy
steals second base? He's there, Martin, before the ball, before
the tag, and the guy holds the tag on him.
And they replay it, right? For a millisecond, his foot

(12:27):
comes up off the bag and they say he's out.
That is not what instant replay is for. It's an
obvious call that you should look at and say his
foot wasn't on the bag or the ball hit the ground.

Speaker 3 (12:40):
Something that's so obvious.

Speaker 1 (12:42):
To go do this in this moment just stripped us
of one of those all-time great moments as fans, people
watching the game. That's why we have to eliminate instant replay.

Speaker 2 (12:58):
Enough.

Speaker 3 (12:59):
I don't want it anymore.

Speaker 1 (13:00):
It flipped two different sides of it, if you think
about it.

Speaker 7 (13:04):
Because not only did it rob Western Michigan of the win, right,
but if in fact there was supposed to be a
second left on the clock, it also robbed us a
feel of one of the best plays that we will
see all football season. That Hail Mary from Underwood to
Buchanan would be on the highlight reel of every end
of season college football tape. But instead, because of the

(13:25):
way that game ended. Because of the way that the
official review and the way the machinations of the way
it was delivered, everybody feels like.

Speaker 1 (13:35):
That was an incredible play.

Speaker 7 (13:37):
You know how hard it is to complete a 50
plus yard through the air Hail Mary for a touchdown?

Speaker 1 (13:43):
There's a reason why it's called the Hail Mary because
that's about the chance you got of completing it, right?
And it was a great play.

Speaker 7 (13:50):
To the point of the way that the application of
the replay was put forth, it ruined it. It ruined
Western Michigan's night, and it ruined any Michigan fan's night.

Speaker 1 (14:00):
It did. College football was worse for it across the board.
And people, I know they stormed the field. It's just
a gut reaction. But are you serious after that piss-poor
performance by Michigan? 27-and-a-half-point favorites?

Speaker 7 (14:14):
You know, this is the other thing about this, and
this goes into a deeper thing, not necessarily about the.

Speaker 1 (14:20):
Officiating or replay.

Speaker 7 (14:24):
Michigan, before 2013, Michigan did not play a game at
7 p.m. They did not play a night game at all.
Why is Western Michigan the opener at 7.30 Eastern? Night
games used to be special. Do you want to see
why kids storm the field? Because they've been drinking since
9 o'clock in the morning. This game should have been

(14:44):
kicked off at noon, just like all these other openers were,
but you got to.

Speaker 1 (14:49):
Fit it in the primetime window. Crazy. It's ridiculous. All right,
we want to hear from you. Martin and I are
in agreement on the instant replay. Where are you as
a fan? 877-99 on Fox. I'm done with instant replay.
Too many times it has ruined moments for sports fans.
I'm okay with errors and.

(15:10):
Human beings making mistakes or whatever, but we're going to
now replay and then take away a moment from fans.
And it's happened over and over and over again, where
somebody gets a touchdown or some other big play or whatever,
and then some crazy replay brings it all back or
it's incorrect or whatever.

Speaker 3 (15:31):
It's not 100%. So what's the difference? 877-99 on Fox.
We want to hear from you. Instant replay.

Speaker 1 (15:38):
You with it? You're done with it? You're cool with it?
It is The Odd Couple on a.
Magic City.

Speaker 3 (15:46):
Labor Day, Magic City Monday.

Speaker 1 (15:49):
Oh!

Speaker 3 (15:50):
That's right.

Speaker 1 (15:51):
Extra labor from cinnamon.

Speaker 3 (15:52):
No doubt. 877-99 on Fox.

Speaker 1 (15:55):
Rob Parker along with Martin Weiss in for Kelvin Washington
right here on Fox Sports Radio. Stick and stay.

Speaker 5 (16:06):
Especially if I give Rob Parker one extra second for
another hot take in the U.S.

Speaker 2 (16:10):
Event.

Speaker 3 (16:10):
Yeah, I need it.

Speaker 9 (16:15):
Hey, it's Covino and Rich from Fox Sports Radio. Go

Speaker 1 (17:03):

Martin Weiss in for Kelvin Washington on a Magic City
Monday as well. John Jansen, Michigan color analyst, coming up.
Former NFL offensive lineman. He'll join us, give us some

(17:25):
more insight on what went on in the big house.
And with just one pill... Aleve can keep you moving
with up to 12 hours.

Speaker 3 (17:37):
Body pain relief.

Speaker 1 (17:38):
That's right. For busy schedules packed with school drop-offs, long meetings,
and an endless to-do list, Aleve delivers long-lasting pain relief.

Speaker 3 (17:46):
Feel Aleve. Use as directed for minor issues.

Speaker 1 (17:52):
Aches and pains. All right, 877-99 on Fox. We want
to hear what you say. Martin and I are in
agreement on this.

Speaker 3 (18:00):
I'm cool. I'm done with instant replay.

Speaker 1 (18:03):
After fans continue to get jobbed, moments taken away from them,
you know, they don't get it right all the time anyway,
so what's the difference?

Speaker 3 (18:13):
If instant replay had 100%.

Speaker 1 (18:15):
And everybody was on board and every call was right,
then maybe I would buy into it, but that's not
the case.

Speaker 3 (18:21):
Where are you?

Speaker 1 (18:22):
Yeah, instant replay.

Speaker 7 (18:23):
No good with me, but apparently good with Johan from Seattle. Johan,
you're on the Odd Couple Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (18:29):
How you doing, champ?

Speaker 6 (18:31):
I'm good.

Speaker 10 (18:32):
My brothers, how y'all doing today?

Speaker 1 (18:33):
Awesome. You know it. Come on, man.

Speaker 3 (18:35):
We're working on a holiday, so you know it's good.

Speaker 2 (18:38):
Yes, sir.

Speaker 6 (18:39):
Yes, sir. Yeah, man.

Speaker 10 (18:40):
So, you know, just so you know, I work on
a replay crew in college football, and I understand the frustration,
you know, from the viewer.

Speaker 1 (18:51):
I was.

Speaker 10 (18:52):
watching that game just like everybody else was. In fact,
I actually turned it off after I thought it was–
originally I changed the channel because I thought, oh, okay,
the game's over. But then something told me when I
saw the end, let me go back because I know
how the replay process works. And from a replay standpoint,
what you see on TV isn't necessarily what they see.

(19:14):
They've got what's called the All-22. So they're going to
zero in to the very point to where that ball
is touched. And then along with the technician, they're going
to be able to look at the exact game clock
that you see in the stadium. And typically, you know,
stadium clock also won't go down into tenths of a second.

(19:35):
So they're going to go down to tenths of a second,
and they will make a determination, you know, was that
ball touched or was that ball not touched?

Speaker 1 (19:44):
Jovan, respectfully, I'm not trying to take your job. And
I understand.

Speaker 7 (19:48):
I'm not trying to take your job. I understand the machinations.
But why can't they put that on TV? If they
don't put it on TV, then I understand that you
and a handful of other people have privy to this knowledge.
But the 10 million people who watch the game have
no freaking clue. And not only that, too, is the
idea that all of a sudden, after all these years,

(20:09):
there's some other clock that nobody ever knew about. Like,
it's not the game clock. There's some different clock. We
appreciate your insight and your call.

Speaker 3 (20:17):
Thank you. 877-99 on Fox.

Speaker 1 (20:20):
Yeah, let's go to Ramon in Indy. Ramon.

Speaker 2 (20:24):
Hey, how you doing?

Speaker 10 (20:26):
How y'all doing today, man?

Speaker 1 (20:27):
Doing great.

Speaker 2 (20:28):
I think....

Speaker 6 (20:30):
They need to scrap it, get rid of it. One
of the most egregious calls was the baseball player got
hit on the arm. They reviewed it. You can clearly
see the reviewer hit him.

Speaker 10 (20:40):
Up around his forearm, elbow area, and they.

Speaker 6 (20:43):
Still called it a foul.

Speaker 1 (20:43):
This is what I'm saying.

Speaker 7 (20:46):
Mandrake kicked out.

Speaker 1 (20:47):
It was a bedlam.

Speaker 6 (20:49):
Just destroyed it. How do you miss these calls?

Speaker 3 (20:52):
Because they're human. Because they're human.

Speaker 1 (20:54):
And even though you have this technology– Humans make mistakes.
That's why I'm saying just let it play out.

Speaker 3 (21:01):
Even with the.

Speaker 6 (21:02):
Replay, Rob? They look at the replay.

Speaker 1 (21:04):
I get it, but I'm trying to tell you that
they still get it wrong.

Speaker 3 (21:07):
That's why I'm against replay.

Speaker 2 (21:09):
Scrappy.

Speaker 1 (21:10):
Scrappy. Thanks, buddy.

Speaker 3 (21:11):
Thanks. 877-99 on Fox.

Speaker 7 (21:13):
I think to the caller Johan's point initially, To the
call of Johan's point, who works in the replay booth,
there's value to that. There's value to know how the
whole process works. No, I know what you're saying. But
if we can't see it on TV, what's it matter?

Speaker 1 (21:28):
I also just think there's a fan experience that you're
just taking away from people.

Speaker 3 (21:34):
It's a killer. It just is. It just is. Let's
squeeze one more in. We got Rocky.

Speaker 1 (21:41):
Rocky.

Speaker 3 (21:43):
South Carolina, you're on the Odd Couple Fox Sports Radio.
What's up, Rocky?

Speaker 2 (21:46):
Hey, guys.

Speaker 4 (21:47):
Always a pleasure.

Speaker 6 (21:49):
Yes.

Speaker 8 (21:49):
I've been watching ball for so many decades. And back
in the day, there was no instant replay. And we
watched the game and we took the officials' calls. But
we said, yeah, maybe we need a little replay reviews
on certain calls, as you.

Speaker 1 (22:03):
Guys were saying.

Speaker 8 (22:05):
Those few calls that may be critical, and that was great.

Speaker 2 (22:09):
Now they want.

Speaker 6 (22:10):
To review every single thing.

Speaker 8 (22:13):
My goodness, it's gotten out of hand.

Speaker 4 (22:16):
You're reviewing way too much instead of You know, the
bits and pieces of it, and it's gotten– I'd say
instant replay's gotten out of hand.

Speaker 8 (22:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (22:28):
I'm with you. I can live without it. I'm sorry.
And you know what?

Speaker 1 (22:32):
I can.

Speaker 3 (22:33):
The only two.

Speaker 7 (22:34):
Applications of instant replay across sports that work for me,
ABS and tennis.

Speaker 6 (22:39):
Right.

Speaker 7 (22:39):
Because it's immediate instant in the moment.

Speaker 2 (22:42):
Right?

Speaker 1 (22:42):
I don't have to think about it. I don't have
to wait.

Speaker 7 (22:44):
I don't have to wait for 25 minutes for John— or
wait a whole 24 hours, rather, for John Fanta to
come on NBC and tell me what happened.

Speaker 1 (22:51):
In the game.

Speaker 6 (22:52):
Right.

Speaker 3 (22:52):
But that shouldn't happen.

Speaker 1 (22:53):
And if you have to take a look at something
that long, then you shouldn't be changing it. I'm serious.
Because it should be that obvious, and that's a problem.
But the ABS system, I'm going to tell you this,
it has validated the umpires. You know that they are—
Call percentage is very high. And Martin, the ones that
they miss are inches.

Speaker 3 (23:14):
Am I right?

Speaker 1 (23:15):
Inches. Like the major league umpires, they do an unbelievable
job that when you really look at their scoring, it's
amazing how when they miss, it's just so amazing.

Speaker 7 (23:27):
I'll tell you, Rob, instant replay is like communism. It
sounds great on paper, but then you're four or five
years into it and you're at the grocery store saying,
where is everything?

Speaker 1 (23:37):
All right, John Jansen's coming up. Michigan color analyst. We'll
get some more into this debacle at the big house.
But first, let's get you caught up. Steve DeSegre is
at the anchor desk.

Speaker 11 (23:47):
Hey, on the holiday, there is one college football game tonight.
Florida State about to host No. 19 SMU, our reminder
this Friday on Fox TV, No.

Speaker 1 (23:55):
25 Missouri at Kansas.

Speaker 11 (23:56):
The Atlanta Falcons officially named quarterback Tua Tonga-Vailoa as their
Week 1 starter. Now, the NFL season opener is Wednesday,
New England at Seattle. Patriots running back Travion Henderson mispracticed again.
Ankle injury has been the problem. He did travel with
the team. Titans linebacker Cedric Gray is in concussion protocol
after a UTV accident. In women's basketball, Team USA beat

(24:19):
winless Czechia 105-64 at the World Cup in Berlin. Coco
Gauff's fourth round match at the U.S. Open underway in
New York tonight. Baseball in progress at San Diego. Mace
Miller on to try for the save. Top of the ninth.
Padres led 3-0 early.

Speaker 1 (24:32):
It's now 3-2.

Speaker 11 (24:34):
Against the Washington Nationals. Starting up in a half an hour, St.
Louis at San Francisco. And at 9 p.m. Eastern time,
the Dodgers host the Reds. LADH Shohei Otani returns to
the lineup tonight. He missed four straight games with injuries.
Arizona won at Kansas City, 5-4. Diamondbacks started the day
a half game ahead of San Diego for the last
NL wildcard. Milwaukee over the Cubs, 4-3, despite a Peter

(24:57):
Kerr Armstrong home run. Pete Kerr Armstrong with 41 home
runs now. Kyle Schwarber hit his 43rd. And that helped
the Phillies do a 1-0 win over Atlanta today. Jesus Lozardo, 14-5,
got the win with a complete game and 12 strikeouts.
Mets won at Miami, 9-4. At Baltimore, Orioles beat Cleveland, 6-4.
The Idol White Sox now have a three-game lead over

(25:19):
Cleveland in the AL Central. Detroit beat the Twins, 5-4.
Boston at home defeated the Angels, 5-2. The late game tonight,
10 p.m. Eastern time. The A's host Toronto. The Blue
Jays started the day one game out for the final
AL wildcard.

Speaker 1 (25:33):
Back to you.

Speaker 3 (25:34):
Thank you, Steve.

Speaker 1 (25:35):
Appreciate it. It is The Odd Couple, Fox Sports Radio.
Rob Parker, Martin Weiss in for Kelvin Washington on a
Magic City Monday. Now let's bring in John Jansen, of course,
the Michigan color analyst, color analyst on the broadcast. 97
won the ticket, played in the NFL 11 years, offensive lineman,
all pro, and won the national championship in 1997 with Michigan.

Speaker 3 (26:00):
John, what's happening? Welcome to The Odd Couple.

Speaker 6 (26:03):
Hey, how you guys doing? How's the weather out there
in Southern California?

Speaker 1 (26:07):
Pretty beautiful. Doing his best Miami impersonation. Absolutely.

Speaker 4 (26:12):
Why?

Speaker 3 (26:13):
Is it bad weather in Michigan?

Speaker 1 (26:14):
No, it's bad weather here. It's raining. It's hot. I'm sorry.
Go ahead, John.

Speaker 6 (26:18):
Nah, man. We're finally in that sweet spot. The fall,
you know, when you break out the jeans, the flannel, everything.
We're ready to rock and roll for football season.

Speaker 3 (26:26):
Very nice.

Speaker 1 (26:28):
Let's go to that debacle. Michigan had no business winning
that game. John, that was awful. What was that? Before
we get to the controversial play, why was Michigan so bad?
And even in that position, there were 27 and a
half point favorites.

Speaker 6 (26:46):
I mean, bad offensive line play, bad quarterback play. I mean,
you got some more talent at receiver than Michigan has
had in a couple of years, yet you're not able
to get them the ball. This started off that scripted drive.
even though there was some errors in there and things
that went right for Michigan, that was all they had.

(27:08):
The first five plays, completions, and then you move right
down the field, you score a touchdown, everybody's thinking, hey,
this is the new Bryce Underwood, this is the offensive line,
this is.

Speaker 1 (27:18):
This is the staff.

Speaker 6 (27:19):
That was brought in to normalize everything. And it just,
that was it. The faucet turned off. There was no,
you couldn't get up on linebackers. The offensive line couldn't
get off the defensive front. It was like they were
wearing Velcro. And then Bryce just, continued to not be
the guy that we saw at practice or that we

(27:40):
were hearing from Coach Whittingham and Coach Beck, the offensive coordinator,
that they had seen throughout spring ball and fall camp.

Speaker 3 (27:48):
All right, so.

Speaker 1 (27:50):
Did you think the game was over when the ball
got knocked down in the end zone? What was your
reaction as it was happening? Like, this is all over. Oh,
my God, they lost to Western Michigan. Is that what
was your reaction? feel or your sense right there?

Speaker 6 (28:06):
Oh, yeah. Everybody in the stadium, everybody, I'm sure everybody
on TV was thinking the same thing as we were.
We were basically killing time as they were reviewing it.
And the comments that we were making were in tune with,
you know, could this get prolonged any further? Like the
misery that Michigan fans were going through, it felt like
it was just getting extended because of this replay. And

(28:29):
we all thought we knew the answer. And unfortunately, nobody
knew what the actual question was to the test that
they were reviewing.

Speaker 1 (28:38):
John Jansen here with the Michigan Color Analyst.

Speaker 7 (28:41):
John, when– I want to go back to the first
60 minutes of the game, though, because I'm a Michigan fan,
and I started at– I went to Michigan.

Speaker 1 (28:52):
My first year was Rich Rodriguez's first game.

Speaker 7 (28:55):
So I have been through the doldrums of this program, right,
the worst that it's been. And when Winningham got the job,
I didn't expect– him to be even eligible because he
thought he'd probably be at Utah for the rest of
his life. But I figured this was about as good
as you could ask for when you need a guy
to kind of steady your program when your last head

(29:15):
coach ended the season in jail. And so what I saw, though,
for the first 60 minutes of that game, Hail Mary notwithstanding,
was a team that didn't look very different than the
one that took the field last season. Now, I didn't
see a market change in, like, physicality. I didn't see
a market change in just, like, I will say this. Defensively,

(29:38):
they looked a lot more sound. but that was it
for me, and I expected to see just more competency
out of this football team under Kyle Whittingham.

Speaker 6 (29:47):
Well, not only competency, but discipline. And I mean, they
had nine penalties. They had 12 men on the field.
What was the three penalties where, you know, illegal procedure
and because you didn't have enough guys on the line
of scrimmage like that wasn't at all what I anticipated
we were going to see. And then you take it
a step further. And we had heard all offseason about

(30:09):
the development. They brought in Coy Detmer as the quarterback coach.
And Bryce had gone not just with Michigan staff, but
he had gone with Jordan Palmer. He was working on technique,
and he was working on his mechanics. All of those
things that we were told and we were hearing about. And,
I mean, the only thing that I would say was
Coach Whittingham and his staff They didn't say, they didn't

(30:32):
make any proclamations like he was going to be this
great quarterback. They said, hey, he's got to take what
we've seen in practice and we need to see it
at game time. Obviously, we didn't see it at game time.
We didn't see the experience on the offensive line where
everybody up front is returning either as starters or have
starting experience. And it just, it was an absolute shock

(30:55):
what we saw for 60 minutes leading up to the
final play of the game.

Speaker 1 (31:00):
I got to admit, and had they lost that game,
would that have been the beginning of the end of
Kyle Winningham?

Speaker 3 (31:09):
I mean, like, to start your Michigan career....

Speaker 1 (31:14):
Because I remember when Lloyd Carr lost to Appalachian State,
and that was the beginning of the end. How big
was that that they didn't lose that game just for
the start of Kyle's career at Michigan?

Speaker 6 (31:30):
Honestly, I think if it had ended with the first
Hail Mary, I think it would have been better than
actually the way that it did. And now nobody's going
to complain about a win. You win the game and
it goes in the wind column, but because of the
way it ended it now is everyone is focused on

(31:53):
that play on the one second that was put back
on the clock. And it puts a spotlight across the
country on everything that happened beginning of that game. Now
there's going to be a spotlight because it's Michigan and
they're playing Western Michigan. They were 27 and a half
point favorites. That's a spotlight enough, but now everyone can't
stop talking about this game and they keep going to

(32:16):
Michigan was outplayed. Western Michigan was the better team. And
then they start talking about that final play. So I
actually think if, if they hadn't won the game and
we didn't have this controversy, it might've actually been a
better scenario.

Speaker 3 (32:29):
Now, John— One last thing here. We got one minute
to go. Yeah, John, so you go back from Michigan.

Speaker 7 (32:35):
Davis Warren starts that game at Ohio State, gets the win,
and they say Dave Portnoy and Larry Ellison's wife and
everybody says.

Speaker 1 (32:42):
We'll never not have a quarterback again.

Speaker 3 (32:45):
No cost is too much.

Speaker 7 (32:46):
And so at the cost of $ 3 million a year,
$ 12 million total for Bryce Underwood.

Speaker 6 (32:49):
Wow.

Speaker 7 (32:50):
I'm wondering— Like, the play's not matching up to the pay.
And in the NIL era, I know that it's weird, because,
you know, I'll put it like this. If this was
the NFL, Tua Tungabailoa got cut, right, after signing his
massive guaranteed deal. Russell Wilson got cut after his massive
guaranteed deal. I'm not saying that you should cut Bryce Underwood,

(33:13):
but what's the level of, like, whatever, fear, concern, doubt,
To go into the backup, right, to go into Tommy
Carr when you know that he's not nearly as– like
Bryce Hunter was the most highest-paid compensated player in college
football in some markets, right? So I'm wondering how is
that back and forth supposed to work when the play

(33:35):
is not matching?

Speaker 6 (33:36):
Well, I mean, you heard Coach Whittingham in his press
conference today. Like, no one is guaranteed a spot. You
got to go out there and continue to earn it
day in, day out. So, you know, hey, we'll see
what happens against Oklahoma. That's going to be the next test.
And if that doesn't look any better, then the coaches
are going to have to reevaluate. I don't think there's any...
I don't think there's anything that would prevent him from

(33:58):
moving on from Bryce Underwood. And then when the offseason comes,
we all know this. Players have a lot of power.
They're all in one-year deals. Everyone's a free agent. On
the flip side of that, coaches can go get a
replacement every single year if they want to. So even
though the money is there, you can always move on
from guys. It's a matter of you've got to put

(34:20):
up if you're going to get paid.

Speaker 1 (34:21):
All right. Hey, John Jansen, man, we appreciate you taking
a few minutes. And joining us here on The Odd Couple,
my man. Appreciate you. Thank you. Hey, John, give my
best to Doug Carson and Scott Anderson. I interned for
that show, my first job ever in radio. And now
here we are.

Speaker 3 (34:36):
I'll do that.

Speaker 1 (34:37):
I'll do that.

Speaker 6 (34:37):
I was with Stoney this morning. I'm sure he sends
his best, too.

Speaker 1 (34:40):
Oh, yeah. I was going to say, and one last thing, John,
tell Stoney to retire and get off the radio. Actually retire.

Speaker 3 (34:46):
Can you do that?

Speaker 1 (34:47):
I've never known somebody retire and work more.

Speaker 3 (34:49):
He's working more now. Tell Stoney enough, okay? 35 years
is enough.

Speaker 6 (34:55):
Hey, he's a lifer. You know he's going to do
this until somebody tells him he's no longer wanted. He'll
be doing this forever.

Speaker 1 (35:01):
All right, buddy.

Speaker 3 (35:02):
Thank you.

Speaker 7 (35:03):
Bouncing those legs until they can't bounce anymore. All right,
coming up, Sheckle City and Dabo Sweeney. Very nice debut
for his team, right? Very nice for Dabo Sweeney.

Speaker 1 (35:15):
At least somebody tried to take the pressure off of Michigan. Yeah, okay,
a little bit. All right, it is The Odd Couple
on a Magic City Monday. Rob Parker, Martin Weiss. Stick
and stay.

Speaker 5 (35:24):
Especially if you also think he should retire in the U.S.

Speaker 2 (35:30):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in

Speaker 1 (35:43):
That is The Odd Couple on a Magic City Monday,
your Labor Day night.

Speaker 3 (35:48):
Hope you had a great time with family, friends.

Speaker 1 (35:51):
If you're off... If you were working like I was
or double dipping, I'm all right with it. Alex, you
know that. You're a worker. Steve DeSegar. We usually work
the holidays, and I'm okay with it. Of course. That's
when we get paid better, too.

Speaker 6 (36:07):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (36:08):
If I have plans, I take off.

Speaker 1 (36:11):
Well, you know.

Speaker 3 (36:12):
You know what I mean?

Speaker 1 (36:13):
When you have a family like Kelvin does, it's a
little different.

Speaker 3 (36:15):
No, I'm not saying he can do whatever he wants.

Speaker 1 (36:17):
He's got to go make memories.

Speaker 3 (36:18):
Kelvin don't even have to have a family. He wouldn't
be here.

Speaker 1 (36:21):
Nope.

Speaker 4 (36:21):
No.

Speaker 1 (36:22):
Am I right?

Speaker 3 (36:24):
I think Kelvin, people are different. And I'm not trying to.
People are different.

Speaker 1 (36:29):
Some people are just, if I'm off, I'm just going
to be off regardless. And then you look at it,
there's a thing about building a show and you don't
want to be, you know, like.

Speaker 3 (36:40):
There's different, it's different if you're digging a ditch. I
get it.

Speaker 1 (36:43):
I wouldn't go to work or I'm stocking shelves. Sometimes
for the sake of the show, you got to kind
of put in some extra time.

Speaker 3 (36:51):
That's a great point. Am I wrong?

Speaker 1 (36:52):
That's a great point.

Speaker 3 (36:53):
That's all I'm saying.

Speaker 1 (36:54):
Because think about it too.

Speaker 5 (36:55):
We're heavy lifting with our words and we're connected to
people who listen to us more on these days. So
it says value for you to be here on these days.

Speaker 1 (37:01):
And you know, I'm going to tell you this, Warren.
And Alex knows this because they call in. When we're
here for Thanksgiving Christmas, how many people call in, Alex,
and say thank you, thanks for working, thanks for being
here for us, and everybody else is off and all
their shows and they can't listen. They're so thankful. So
I get it. I understand it. All right, let's do it.

Speaker 3 (37:24):
It's time for a little Sheckle City.

Speaker 2 (37:25):
Welcome to Sheckle City, the home base for Rob Parker's
daily picks against the.

Speaker 1 (37:33):
Sprat All right, so Friday, 1 and 2.

Speaker 3 (37:42):
I'm now 211 and 191. 211 and 191 total.

Speaker 1 (37:46):
We're about to do a reset. Elijah's been twisting my
arm for a reset. So that is coming up. You
should reset Wednesday. No, that's what it is. That's it,
the start of the football season. That's why I did
the whole numbers up until that. All right, here we
go tonight. We're going to start with the Cardinals at

(38:10):
the Giants. I'm going to take the Cardinals plus one
and a half in San Francisco. Wow. I got the
Dodgers minus one and a half.

Speaker 3 (38:22):
They're taking on.

Speaker 1 (38:22):
The Reds here in Los Angeles. And I got the
Blue Jays minus one and a half. They're in Sacramento
taking on the A's.

Speaker 3 (38:35):
So here we go.

Speaker 1 (38:37):
Blue Jays minus one and a half, Dodgers minus one
and a half, and the Cardinals plus one and a half. And, Martin,
I'm not telling you who to bet on. I'm telling
you who I bet on. All right.

Speaker 3 (38:51):
Where are you on Dabo Sweeney?

Speaker 1 (38:53):
I mean, like, my God, how bad it's been. And
then he's pushing back on the new way. of college football.
He didn't want any part of it. He was against
the transfer portal. He's mad at all the other stuff
that's going on. I mean, if you don't want to
adapt or change and you want to be a dinosaur,

(39:15):
you probably should step down.

Speaker 7 (39:16):
But I don't even think that's the biggest issue with
that team. I get the point. Now, they will not
compete for national championships without dipping into the portal more
and playing the game.

Speaker 3 (39:28):
Playing the game the way it is.

Speaker 4 (39:29):
Right.

Speaker 1 (39:30):
That's what I'm saying.

Speaker 7 (39:31):
There is some validity to, you look at LSU's roster
and the $ 50 million or whatever they spent on theirs.
Look at Clemson's roster. Look at what Indiana did last year.
Winning a national championship.

Speaker 3 (39:42):
But ultimately.

Speaker 7 (39:44):
Just we see across up and down the board, just
because you have a very expensive team or a inexpensive
team to that matter, doesn't mean you can't compete. This
asked Western Michigan, right? Boise State took Oregon to the
hilt on Saturday. Clemson is putting out bad tape on football,
like just bad football play. They don't block. They're not
physical up front. And the thing's crazy is they have

(40:05):
a ton of talent. That team, this team, last year.
I couldn't see it. Last year, you know how many
Clemson lost five games that nine players drafted to the
NFL last year?

Speaker 3 (40:14):
Yeah, but I'm just saying. And it's going to be similar.

Speaker 7 (40:16):
They're going to have like six, seven guys drafted, and
they're going to lose five games again. I will put
Dabo upstairs. He's the best coach we've ever had. I'll
put him upstairs and then renovate my coaching room.

Speaker 4 (40:28):
All right.

Speaker 1 (40:28):
Well, crazy. All right.

Speaker 3 (40:30):
Speaking of.

Speaker 1 (40:32):
The beatdown. Coming up next, we're going to talk about
Lane Kiffin. I loved his halftime comments. And I love,
I think he should follow through with putting those players
on his roster. I know he didn't do it for
week one, but we'll talk about that and much more.
It is the Odd Couple. Stick and stay. Unless you

(40:52):
went to the NFL.
