of the they have a.

Hall of Game class from a player and I'm getting
an award.

stuff has happened to me, and you know that that
meant so much to me. It really really did like
to put that together, to make it happen, and then
for it to become, you know, like a part of
the fabric of baseball, and for the Negro League's Baseball

Museum to say, hey, that was innovative, it was much
needed and we want to honor you. So the big
date is September twenty sixth a Saturday night in Kansas City,
a big presentation, so I'm thrilled.

And because of that, we're gonna have.

Kendrick, who is the president of the Negro League's Baseball Museum,
later on in this first hour, he'll tell us all
about who else is getting in the former players and
if you want to go down to the museum if

And congrats, brother, you've been covering the league for four decades.
We know you love football, so we're getting ready to
talk about basketball, but we know baseball as your baby,
so that's awesome. And we know how important the Negro
League is are as far as telling the history, reminding
folks about our history and how great we were and
how we didn't get a chance to play for so long,

so we started our own thing dominated there and then
of course obviously got into the league and have been
dominating there as well.

But we got to make sure it's important that we
tell those stories.

He came back to me. He was like, is the

And they were like, oh yeah, give me a give

we know the football started preseason, exhibition football, whatever you
want to call it. Last night, let's start there.

Yeah, we ended up beating I mean, listen for those
who just wanted any similars of football, any football action,
wanted to you know, have that like who football field,
Well you got it, and you got it in a
surprisingly you know, good game. The Carolina Panthers beat the
Arizona Cardinals thirty three to thirty on the last second
drive there from the Panthers. Their rookie quarterback Haines King.
(09:28):
Haines King, I like that name, ran it all the
way into the end zone to win that game. He
had one hundred and eighty yards, a couple of touchdowns,
looked good, thirty nine rushing yards.
Speaker 5 (09:37):
Can he pick? It looked pretty solid and it start
as well, well not.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
Tell you all need to know is that Kenny. Look,
you already know about that house, so you have to
discount the whole thing.
Speaker 5 (09:44):
Throw it all away.
Speaker 7 (09:45):
And then big other conversation was rookie quarterback Carson Back
obviously a big pick and a lot of people looking
at him, and Cardinals got rid of Kyler Murray like
this is supposed to be their franchise moving forward.

He he looked good.
Speaker 7 (09:57):
Fifteen to nineteen Rob Buck eighty eight touchdown. He had
led on three scoring drives for them. He played into
the third quarter, so good look for him. But to
walk away the conversation really is surprisingly a lot of people.

Like you know how it goes. I didn't. Nobody was
really texting about it.
Speaker 7 (10:12):
I didn't really get too many crazy ooh you're seeing
this it's And the conversation becomes, where are you with
the preseason?
Speaker 5 (10:19):
You in?

You excited just to take any little like I said,
similar to of football, does it matter to you for
you to the teams or is it a.
Speaker 5 (10:28):
Kind of a waste of our time and effort.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
I'm out on preseason football.
Speaker 2 (10:33):
I'm sorry the coaches are out on preseason football. Go
look at the Rams and these other teams where they
don't play their players.
Speaker 1 (10:41):
They don't even care.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
So if they don't care, and you could have a
regular season, and if the Rams are the favorite and
they're not playing their people, why in the world would
I care? I don't care. It doesn't mean that I
can't watch the highlights or we need to talk about
it or something. But I'm telling am I invested in it?
Am I gonna break my neck to watch preseason football.
(11:06):
I don't know, Kelvin. I've been covering the NFL since
nineteen eighty seven. I've been to plenty of preseason games
and they all boring. Football is a great, exciting game.
Preseason football is awful. No, thanks, No, Moss not interested.
Speaker 1 (11:25):
I'm just not.
Speaker 2 (11:27):
It doesn't move the needle for me. And the only
people who have really got their eye on it. If
you're betting, if you bet last night, and if you're
into gambling, they might have bet it last night because
they just want some action. They can't wait for the
season to start. But Kelvin, I you know, if you
take something away from it, and you want to tell
me that Kenny Pickett now is a viable quarterback because

he had a great preseason game, or buy into any
of that, I just can't.
Speaker 7 (11:54):
No, I'm not big on preseason In fact, increasingly less.
I think when I was younger, you know, you're just again,
it was like you're cracked out right. I just take anything,
give me any football. But now again, with obviously life
you grows older. I got you know, life and kids
and jobs and all that. It's like, all right, I'll
catch in and check in in a little bit. And
I think also, right, we have too much evidence over
the years where teams used to go back when it
(12:14):
was remember it was four preseason games, and teams would
go four and oh and you're like, oh shoot, and
then it's the Lions and they ended up not winning anything.
Speaker 1 (12:23):
You had the lines when four and oh and they
went only sixteen age.
Speaker 7 (12:27):
Yeah whatever, Rob, I know, okay, I know, so you
see that, and then you see some teams go on
four and there and dag there and you know, the
super Bowl.
Speaker 5 (12:35):
So I don't take too much stock.
Speaker 7 (12:36):
I get the I get the desire to get your
big rookies in there, to get some young guys maybe
first year, second year guys, or even new maybe if
you got a new player that's young and you want
to get a acclimate to get them some game, you know,
live bullets if you will.
Speaker 5 (12:49):
Totally get that. But overall, I.
Speaker 7 (12:51):
Think increasingly less we're gonna see guys starting their starters playing,
big time players playing because it's a long season.
Speaker 5 (13:00):

We're now at seventeen weeks Dad going to They're talking
about eighteen weeks before you know it.
Speaker 5 (13:05):
And I think coaches are just.
Speaker 7 (13:07):
Saying, man, I got to have my guys as healthy
and as as ready for the regular season as possible. Now,
with that may come some rusty week one in two
games right where teams get a little more acclimated now later,
wouldn't you one hundred percent?
Speaker 3 (13:24):
Right?

So I think you're gonna see.
Speaker 7 (13:25):
We've seen it over the last couple of years, teams
a little rusty, still working through the kinks. Offensive line
aren't quite as on and sync as they normally would be.
I think you'll see that and so, but I don't
pay much attention to it obviously.

Uh.

You know, you might get a game of the here too,
where a starting group plays a couple of drives, and
that'll be fun to just see some bigger names. But
for the most part, I'm not into it, and you're
not gonna see that. And last point, the interesting thing
about it, Rob is We've talked about this the last.

Couple of years that I've been on this show.
Speaker 7 (13:55):
You know who acts like it is the regular season
NFL teams because they're charging you parking like his regular season.
They're charging you prices to get in dag near like
his regular season for preseason games, and they're acting, and
they looking at as a great opportunity to get some
regular home season game money, because boy, if you've ever
been in a preseason game, you are like, wait, I'm sorry.

How much is parking seventy five?
Speaker 1 (14:20):
What you must do? Everything?
Speaker 2 (14:22):
It's ridiculous for bad football? And right, yeah, and and
so I'm you couldn't give me one hundred dollars to
go to a preseason game. I'm serious, like.
Speaker 7 (14:33):
I'm not knowing dedicated, I'm not that thirsty for it's
coming our.
Speaker 1 (14:37):
Way here exactly. I don't need it.
Speaker 7 (14:42):
But as far as what you saw Carson Beck, listen,
all he can do is when the coach says, go play,
go play, and he looks.
Speaker 5 (14:48):
Very very good.

A guy who we knew, you know, who had twenty twenty,
he had six years rob as a a college football player,
six years turned down going last year because he was like,
I'm a to get this nil money from Miami, so
I ain't.

Going to the NFL yet.

So he looked after all that experience, all those starts,
all those big games, which you would hope for him
if you're a Cardinal fan, he looked good. That's the
best you can do, They asked, you to play, We'll
go play. Well, so he did that, Hans King as well,
But I don't put too much stock in it at
this juncture, all right?

But would you really pay unless you're forced to pay
like sometimes it's part of your season ticket package. When
I had season tickets for the barbershop in Detroit, they
used to make us buy the preseason games. We had

no choice if you wanted season tickets. But I would
never pay any money for preseason game. We want to

because preseason doesn't need to be there. So except for
maybe the first game. First game, the teams put their
players in the ones that they want to see or
just play like you're playing. Get the practice out of this,
get that rush off of them, and then the next
week the season starts.

But it's like college football, what preseason do they have?

They play also rams right, the first couple of weeks
and roll through those guys.

And then also if you want to see what your
other players can do, just go in and having do
an exhibition practice with another team like they do, like
they do the preseason practice.

Right, they do it in their training camp. But just
like do an exhibition like put your good players in
there or your drafted players in there, see what they

Hey, I don't want to talk about football. I just
want to see you brothers some flowers because about a
year ago. I'm gonna tell you what y'all did for
my daughter. My daughter's twenty two. She was in a
head on collision with a drunk driver. He asked the way,
but fortunately my daughter survived. She's in the Coast Guard.
She station in Jacksonville, Florida. When I got the calls,
(21:08):
she was up in the hospital and she was so distraught.
She had a major concussion. She didn't sustain a lot
of bad injuries, but the mental part of it was
killing her. And I get this call late one night
from her mom before I flew up there, and they
said she was doing spectacular. What happened was she was
(21:29):
up with a night nurse laughing at you guys for
y'all's take on y'all sports thing really was twenty Yeah,
she is twenty two and only she doesn't watch any
other sports.

Want to thank you both of you man for saving
my daughter's life.

Innovator Award.

means a great deal to us because it's important for
us to highlight the leaders and innovators that made negro
leagues baseball so special, and of course the work that

No, it's our annual Hall of Game ceremony, and of course,
Fellas we created the Hall of Game back in twenty fourteen,
and it annually honors former Major League Grace who we
believe played the game the way that they played it
in the negro leagues. So you played it with passion,
You played it obviously with high skill, which I also

played it with a little swag. Now you don't have
that if you're going to play in the Negro League. Yes,
and so this year's class is exemplary, even though they're
maybe not as big a names as some people would
think about. But man, they were outstanding ballplayers and they
should be recognized. And that's exactly what we're doing. The
Great Ralph Guard the road Runner is coming to town

to be part of the Hall of Game ceremonies. Sarge
Gary Matthews Senior will be here. Reggie Smith, his nickname
was Spike. Now, if Bob Gibson nickname you Spike, because
he says you played the game hard knows and no
one played the game more hard nose than Bob Gibson,

you must be pretty dog going to nations and Reggie Smith.

And Andre thunder Thornton rounds out our fablers for legendary. Well,
most people remember him as a member of the Cleveland Indians,

I actually interviewed Dusty Baker from our podcast for next week,
and you know I could have talked to him for
four hours.

I mean, oh my goodness.

You know that Dusty has all the great stories. I've
said this to Bob. He's the coolest baseball player for
the Ivenue cause he had the wristbands, the toothpick am
I right, Like, Dusty Baker was cool, cool, no doubt,
And and him and Glenn Burke were the ones who

started the high five.
Speaker 5 (30:04):
Interesting.
Speaker 9 (30:05):
You know, we inducted Dusty into the Hall of Game
last year because we honored some of the great black
managers in of Major League Baseball, history, and so Dusty, Jerry,
Manuel Cito, Gaston, Willie Randolph were here last year for
the ceremony the Great Class, and of course Dusty and
Ralph Guard were rookies with the Atlanta Braids in nineteen
(30:27):
sixty eight and Satchel Paige had been brought in by
the Braves because they thought that Satchel was a little
bit shy of getting his pension. And Bill Bartholomey, who
owned the Braves, was the only one of the owners
that invited Satchel to come in. And Dustin Baker says
he used to carry Satchel Paige at fishing poles because

Statuel went Statue had his fishing poles. And then Dusty
and Ralph were assigned to Henry Aaron.
Speaker 1 (30:59):
Wow.
Speaker 9 (31:00):
See when Henry Aaron was going through that whole ordeal
as he was chasing Babe rous record and you guys
remember this, he got over a million pieces of hate
meal that with death threats.
Speaker 2 (31:11):
He used to have Kelvin donold. You know he had
dummy rooms like they had.
Speaker 9 (31:15):
Oh absolutely, yeah, they'd have.
Speaker 1 (31:16):
Dummy rooms because they they wanted to harm.
Speaker 9 (31:19):
Them, oh absolutely. And so the Braves assigned young Dusty
Baker and Ralph gar to entertain mister Aaron because mister
Aaron liked to laugh and they were trying to keep
his mind off of everything that was swirling around him.
So Ralph Guard and Best Baker had that assignment of
entertaining mister Aaron while he was going through that whole
(31:41):
ordeal and lost in the fact that mister Aaron broke
the record in nineteen seventy four, Ralph Garn won the
batting title that season. Wow, And it was almost lost
in the fact that Henry Aaron had this tremendous milestone.
And so Ralph, of course having attended Grambling State University,
and we always taught the fact that there were a
(32:02):
number of Negro League players who went to HBCUs. So
that's a wonderful story and the connection that we'll get
to share, you know, when we sit down and talk
to him.

You know, you got preseason you obviously, you guys. Teams
are gearing up. You got training camps and all that
stuff and just getting ready for the real, actual football
season to start. We had a nice little scuffle a
little or not even al won't say scuffle, but just
a little.

Anybody's eyes, socker got knocked out or not.
Speaker 7 (37:29):
Nobody got punched up for real, but Kirk Cousins, Max
Krosby getting into it with the Raiders. Uh, basically he
gets sacked, but Crosby kind of, you know, he didn't
do anything too hard.

We kind of, I guess.
Speaker 7 (37:40):
Cousins kind of felt like his hand got hit. Obviously,
quarterback needs that. Uh you you like your quarterback getting
into it trying to show toughness. A lot of the
players coaches said, no punchers were thrown. We liked the
little toughness that it showed.

No, no, no, you gotta be careful. If you wind
up getting hurt, your whole season is racked. You know
what I mean, Like, that's it's that big. You got
to protect the quarterback under all circumstances.

I agree, and not to mention when your whole game
plan is to have Kirk Cousins as long as you
feel needed, could be the whole year. While mendo gets
Fernando Mendoza gets, you know, gets geared up. And because
they said they are, they've made no calls about it.
They are in no rush for him. They want to
make sure he gets as ready as possible. That's why

they got Kirk Cousin. The way you get ready is
by playing. I mean, if he can play, you should
he should play.

who just wanted any similars of football, any football action,
wanted to you know, have that like who football field,
Well you got it, and you got it in a
surprisingly you know, good game. The Carolina Panthers beat the
Arizona Cardinals thirty three to thirty on the last second
drive there from the Panthers. Their rookie quarterback Haines King.

Haines King, I like that name, ran it all the
way into the end zone to win that game. He
had one hundred and eighty yards, a couple of touchdowns,
looked good, thirty nine rushing yards.

Can he pick? It looked pretty solid and it start
as well, well not.

Tell you all need to know is that Kenny. Look,
you already know about that house, so you have to
discount the whole thing.

And then big other conversation was rookie quarterback Carson Back
obviously a big pick and a lot of people looking
at him, and Cardinals got rid of Kyler Murray like
this is supposed to be their franchise moving forward.

Fifteen to nineteen Rob Buck eighty eight touchdown. He had
led on three scoring drives for them. He played into
the third quarter, so good look for him. But to
walk away the conversation really is surprisingly a lot of people.

really texting about it.

I didn't really get too many crazy ooh you're seeing

the preseason?

I'm sorry the coaches are out on preseason football. Go
look at the Rams and these other teams where they
don't play their players.

They don't even care.

So if they don't care, and you could have a
regular season, and if the Rams are the favorite and
they're not playing their people, why in the world would
I care? I don't care. It doesn't mean that I
can't watch the highlights or we need to talk about
it or something. But I'm telling am I invested in it?
Am I gonna break my neck to watch preseason football.

I don't know, Kelvin. I've been covering the NFL since
nineteen eighty seven. I've been to plenty of preseason games
and they all boring. Football is a great, exciting game.
Preseason football is awful. No, thanks, No, Moss not interested.

I'm just not.

It doesn't move the needle for me. And the only
people who have really got their eye on it. If
you're betting, if you bet last night, and if you're
into gambling, they might have bet it last night because
they just want some action. They can't wait for the
season to start. But Kelvin, I you know, if you
take something away from it, and you want to tell
me that Kenny Pickett now is a viable quarterback because

he had a great preseason game, or buy into any
of that, I just can't.

No, I'm not big on preseason In fact, increasingly less.
I think when I was younger, you know, you're just again,
it was like you're cracked out right. I just take anything,
give me any football. But now again, with obviously life
you grows older. I got you know, life and kids
and jobs and all that. It's like, all right, I'll
catch in and check in in a little bit. And
I think also, right, we have too much evidence over
the years where teams used to go back when it

was remember it was four preseason games, and teams would
go four and oh and you're like, oh shoot, and
then it's the Lions and they ended up not winning anything.

You had the lines when four and oh and they
went only sixteen age.
Speaker 7 (12:27):
Yeah whatever, Rob, I know, okay, I know, so you
see that, and then you see some teams go on
four and there and dag there and you know, the
super Bowl.

So I don't take too much stock.
Speaker 7 (12:36):
I get the I get the desire to get your
big rookies in there, to get some young guys maybe
first year, second year guys, or even new maybe if
you got a new player that's young and you want
to get a acclimate to get them some game, you know,
live bullets if you will.

Totally get that. But overall, I.
Speaker 7 (12:51):
Think increasingly less we're gonna see guys starting their starters playing,
big time players playing because it's a long season.

We're now at seventeen weeks Dad going to They're talking
about eighteen weeks before you know it.

And I think coaches are just.

Saying, man, I got to have my guys as healthy
and as as ready for the regular season as possible. Now,
with that may come some rusty week one in two
games right where teams get a little more acclimated now later,
wouldn't you one hundred percent?

So I think you're gonna see.

We've seen it over the last couple of years, teams
a little rusty, still working through the kinks. Offensive line
aren't quite as on and sync as they normally would be.
I think you'll see that and so, but I don't
pay much attention to it obviously.

You know, you might get a game of the here too,
where a starting group plays a couple of drives, and
that'll be fun to just see some bigger names. But
for the most part, I'm not into it, and you're
not gonna see that. And last point, the interesting thing
about it, Rob is We've talked about this the last.

Couple of years that I've been on this show.

You know who acts like it is the regular season
NFL teams because they're charging you parking like his regular season.
They're charging you prices to get in dag near like
his regular season for preseason games, and they're acting, and
they looking at as a great opportunity to get some
regular home season game money, because boy, if you've ever
been in a preseason game, you are like, wait, I'm sorry.

How much is parking seventy five?

What you must do? Everything?

It's ridiculous for bad football? And right, yeah, and and
so I'm you couldn't give me one hundred dollars to

I'm not knowing dedicated, I'm not that thirsty for it's
coming our.

But as far as what you saw Carson Beck, listen,
all he can do is when the coach says, go play,

he had six years rob as a a college football player,
six years turned down going last year because he was like,
I'm a to get this nil money from Miami, so
I ain't.

So he looked after all that experience, all those starts,
all those big games, which you would hope for him
if you're a Cardinal fan, he looked good. That's the
best you can do, They asked, you to play, We'll
go play. Well, so he did that, Hans King as well,
But I don't put too much stock in it at
this juncture, all right?

want to see you brothers some flowers because about a
year ago. I'm gonna tell you what y'all did for
my daughter. My daughter's twenty two. She was in a
head on collision with a drunk driver. He asked the way,
but fortunately my daughter survived. She's in the Coast Guard.
She station in Jacksonville, Florida. When I got the calls,

she was up in the hospital and she was so distraught.
She had a major concussion. She didn't sustain a lot
of bad injuries, but the mental part of it was
killing her. And I get this call late one night
from her mom before I flew up there, and they
said she was doing spectacular. What happened was she was

up with a night nurse laughing at you guys for
y'all's take on y'all sports thing really was twenty Yeah,
she is twenty two and only she doesn't watch any
other sports.

my daughter's life.

Fellas we created the Hall of Game back in twenty fourteen,
and it annually honors former Major League Grace who we
believe played the game the way that they played it
in the negro leagues. So you played it with passion,
You played it obviously with high skill, which I also

played it with a little swag. Now you don't have
that if you're going to play in the Negro League. Yes,
and so this year's class is exemplary, even though they're
maybe not as big a names as some people would
think about. But man, they were outstanding ballplayers and they
should be recognized. And that's exactly what we're doing. The
Great Ralph Guard the road Runner is coming to town

to be part of the Hall of Game ceremonies. Sarge
Gary Matthews Senior will be here. Reggie Smith, his nickname
was Spike. Now, if Bob Gibson nickname you Spike, because
he says you played the game hard knows and no
one played the game more hard nose than Bob Gibson,

you must be pretty dog going to nations and Reggie Smith.

You know that Dusty has all the great stories. I've
said this to Bob. He's the coolest baseball player for
the Ivenue cause he had the wristbands, the toothpick am
I right, Like, Dusty Baker was cool, cool, no doubt,
And and him and Glenn Burke were the ones who

started the high five.

Interesting.

You know, we inducted Dusty into the Hall of Game
last year because we honored some of the great black
managers in of Major League Baseball, history, and so Dusty, Jerry,
Manuel Cito, Gaston, Willie Randolph were here last year for
the ceremony the Great Class, and of course Dusty and
Ralph Guard were rookies with the Atlanta Braids in nineteen

sixty eight and Satchel Paige had been brought in by
the Braves because they thought that Satchel was a little
bit shy of getting his pension. And Bill Bartholomey, who
owned the Braves, was the only one of the owners
that invited Satchel to come in. And Dustin Baker says
he used to carry Satchel Paige at fishing poles because

Statuel went Statue had his fishing poles. And then Dusty
and Ralph were assigned to Henry Aaron.

Wow.

See when Henry Aaron was going through that whole ordeal
as he was chasing Babe rous record and you guys
remember this, he got over a million pieces of hate
meal that with death threats.
Speaker 2 (31:11):
He used to have Kelvin donold. You know he had
dummy rooms like they had.
Speaker 9 (31:15):
Oh absolutely, yeah, they'd have.
Speaker 1 (31:16):
Dummy rooms because they they wanted to harm.

Them, oh absolutely. And so the Braves assigned young Dusty
Baker and Ralph gar to entertain mister Aaron because mister
Aaron liked to laugh and they were trying to keep
his mind off of everything that was swirling around him.
So Ralph Guard and Best Baker had that assignment of
entertaining mister Aaron while he was going through that whole

ordeal and lost in the fact that mister Aaron broke
the record in nineteen seventy four, Ralph Garn won the
batting title that season. Wow, And it was almost lost
in the fact that Henry Aaron had this tremendous milestone.

that's a wonderful story and the connection that we'll get

We were talking about this at the beginning of the show.
You know, you got preseason you obviously, you guys. Teams
are gearing up. You got training camps and all that
stuff and just getting ready for the real, actual football
season to start. We had a nice little scuffle a
little or not even al won't say scuffle, but just
a little.
Speaker 1 (37:27):
Anybody's eyes, socker got knocked out or not.
Speaker 7 (37:29):
Nobody got punched up for real, but Kirk Cousins, Max
Krosby getting into it with the Raiders. Uh, basically he
gets sacked, but Crosby kind of, you know, he didn't
do anything too hard.
Speaker 5 (37:39):
We kind of, I guess.
Speaker 7 (37:40):
Cousins kind of felt like his hand got hit. Obviously,
quarterback needs that. Uh you you like your quarterback getting
into it trying to show toughness. A lot of the
players coaches said, no punchers were thrown. We liked the
little toughness that it showed.

No, no, no, you gotta be careful. If you wind
up getting hurt, your whole season is racked. You know
what I mean, Like, that's it's that big. You got
to protect the quarterback under all circumstances.

I agree, and not to mention when your whole game
plan is to have Kirk Cousins as long as you
feel needed, could be the whole year. While mendo gets
Fernando Mendoza gets, you know, gets geared up. And because
they said they are, they've made no calls about it.
They are in no rush for him. They want to
make sure he gets as ready as possible. That's why

they got Kirk Cousin. The way you get ready is
by playing. I mean, if he can play, you should
he should play.

I just don't. I don't think that that's I think

maybe our record was bad, but we weren't as bad
as we look. Maybe we had an injury here there,
and now we got a rookie. I think it's a
little bit different. They overhauled their roster. They are not

a good team at all. They know this, and I
think they don't want him to get beat up right
now while they're trying to figure this thing out.
