Don't forget, coming.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
Up is Devin Gardner, a former Michigan quarterback and college
football analyst on Fox. He will join us, talk about
his alma mater. Looking forward to that. And, of course,
Last Call. We got a lot to really get to
(01:22):
in this final hour of the program. Also, we've been
talking today real quick about Star Trek, the 60th anniversary.
It debuted on NBC September 8th. The day but 1966,
which is crazy. But also, I do want to give
a shout-out to the late, great Lucille Ball because Desilu
(01:43):
Productions is the company that made it.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
Star Trek. Get that bag then. And NBC didn't want
to pay for the pilot.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
Lucy took it out of her own pocket to finance
the pilot and for this thing to continue and to go.
And without Lucy, you might not even have it at
all because NBC didn't want to foot the bill on
the pilot, which was expensive, obviously, with what they did.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
So Lucille Ball, I was reminded by that. Baller.
Speaker 4 (02:11):
By a listener thanks Gail for passing that along I
do remember that and it was great to mention but
yes and then I guess today at Yankee Stadium I
think her birthday was officially yesterday but they honored Susan
Waldman they gave her like a shout out on the
screen she's the first of all she's a.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
Woman doing color analyst work on radio no yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
Not to say colored radio.
Speaker 5 (02:41):
Oh.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
It's a color. Color.
Speaker 6 (02:43):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
It's not what I heard. Okay.
Speaker 5 (02:45):
It's not what I heard.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
Flag on the play. It's the Michigan instant replay. I'll
tell you. I told you before.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
Driving in Detroit, one of the signs up on a
TV repair shop.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
We fix colored TV. With an E-D. That's got to
be racist. I couldn't believe it.
Speaker 5 (03:02):
That's crazy.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
We fix colored TV. That's crazy.
Speaker 4 (03:06):
That's big reverse racism. There's no such thing as reverse racism.
Please don't repeat that. No, I'm doing it on purpose, Rob.
Somebody's going to go in there and say, why won't
you fix my TV?
Speaker 2 (03:14):
Exactly. That's reverse racism. You know I know, Rob. You know, right.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
But people, you know how many learned people use that term?
Speaker 2 (03:22):
Well, I open my app every day, social media. Alex,
you get it, right? There's no such, it's just racism.
Racism is racism.
Speaker 7 (03:30):
Yes.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
There's no reverse.
Speaker 1 (03:31):
When people say reverse racism, that means the white guy's
getting screwed.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
That's all that means. That's like, oh, I want to say,
there's racism. Reverse racism. No.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
If he's being discriminated against because he's white, it's racism, period.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
Okay.
Speaker 5 (03:49):
The more you know.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
The more you know. That's the great card about the
odd couple. You will learn a lot. Listen, we be
edumacating people. No doubt. All right, so we got all that.
Star Trek, happy we got it in. Thank you, Lucille Ball.
Speaker 4 (04:01):
So in honor of, the moral of the story is
you got a slice of cheesecake, glass of wine, and
you're about to run through about a whole 12 episodes tonight.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
I'm throwing my big fat one.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
Oh, yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
It's going down tonight. What else you running through, Rob?
What else you running through? Oh, stop it. Did I
say Susan how old she was or I didn't say it? No,
you didn't. 8-0. She's 80.
Speaker 1 (04:21):
Because I was saying, forget about that she's a woman
doing color on radio.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
She's 80 years old.
Speaker 1 (04:27):
We used to cover the New Jersey Nets together when
I was 23 years old.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
She's 80 years old.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
You want to know how I know you love her
and respect her? Because you're ageist.
Speaker 8 (04:37):
What?
Speaker 2 (04:37):
You know you're an ageist.
Speaker 4 (04:38):
I was going to say, Rob. And normally you would
be sitting here. If we were off camera right now,
you would be going, tapping me, breaking my arm to
look at somebody who looks old.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
That's your greatest pastime.
Speaker 4 (04:52):
Which does he like more, Aaron Judge at bats or
looking at old people and telling them they need to
get off TV?
Speaker 2 (04:58):
Ooh, that's a tough one, Rob G. and Alex. That's
a tough one. I love Susan Walsh. Oh, God. Oh, God.
Look at what Clyde Frazier got on right there. Look
at that. That's ridiculous. Take me out back. Take me
out of my misery. Are you kidding me? Don't let
me be that old on TV, Kelvin. I swear. Bob
Ryan looks like the Grim Reaper. Oh, God. Oh, God.
(05:19):
Bob Ryan looks like George Washington. He does. Hey, Bob
Ryan came on the show, and he was sharp as
a tack. He don't look like it. You give him
the respect he deserves. His teeth look like they're wooden. Oh,
there it is right there. You hear me? There it is.
Look at the video. Shout out to Susan. Look at that.
There's Kane.
Speaker 4 (05:38):
He's not going to talk about her shiny jacket.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
You fake, Rob. You fake, Rob.
Speaker 4 (05:44):
You know Calvin Murphy had that on you.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
Oh, God, that's so tactless. Look at that.
Speaker 5 (05:50):
God forbid she didn't call the Yankees either.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
Oh, God forbid. Oh, yeah. Oh, that's a great point.
Speaker 5 (05:54):
God forbid she was an angel.
Speaker 4 (05:56):
If she was the same woman doing the same thing
and you know her for the same time, but she
was doing.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
It for the Boston Red Sox.
Speaker 5 (06:01):
Or the Dodgers.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
You're on TV already.
Speaker 7 (06:03):
Oh, God.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
She's 80. She looks like a broken disco ball right there.
Speaker 4 (06:07):
Oh, God.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
That's ridiculous. That's how you talk. I love Susan Wolf.
We know. Because you ain't giving her no shots. Yeah,
everything you say about everybody else doesn't apply to her.
Look at that. Now, I love the J. You know me. Wait.
Speaker 4 (06:22):
Look, if she's talking about the jacket, you'll be on
that seat.
Speaker 5 (06:24):
We need to do some deeper diving here. Rob, have
you ever met Susan Wallman?
Speaker 2 (06:27):
I used to work with her.
Speaker 5 (06:29):
Do you have maybe a couple Kinko letters from Susan?
Speaker 2 (06:31):
No, I don't have any.
Speaker 5 (06:32):
I'm just trying to figure this out. Not at all.
You guys seem real tight.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
All right, here we go. Usually be over here. No,
we covered the New Jersey Nets together back in the 80s.
Speaker 5 (06:39):
Should I cover a fridge with you?
Speaker 2 (06:40):
Okay, here we go. Speaking of the Yankees, Aaron Judge,
over three, two strikeouts. He sucks.
Speaker 9 (06:45):
And then a quick housekeeping moment before we get to
this LSU topic. I looked on the Heard social media
page to see if Colin really stole Rob's take. And
Colin's quote is, quote, Lane Kiffin is a mercenary, but
so is LSU.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
They are perfect for each other.
Speaker 9 (07:00):
I did not hear or see the word hero any
time during the three and a half minute rant.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
Okay. So MJ was wrong. Okay. It wasn't MJ. It
was somebody else. But whatever. MJ was mad at something.
But either way, Colin's still in our good graces. Of course. Colin, okay.
We're good to go. I just want to make sure.
Speaker 6 (07:15):
Ah!
Speaker 2 (07:15):
Put it up in the background, Alex. Ah! I hate y'all.
Speaker 4 (07:19):
I'll be driving home from TV. I used to love
that at the top of the hour. Yeah, I'm driving
home from TV, listening to it. That's the first I hear.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
It's a catchphrase.
Speaker 5 (07:25):
It's just my favorite because I always feel like he's
caught off guard when his show started.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
But he stopped doing it. He didn't do it like
he used to.
Speaker 8 (07:31):
I know.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
Because he heard the odd couple. He heard you, Alex.
Speaker 8 (07:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (07:34):
Now he's just ready for it.
Speaker 6 (07:37):
Ah!
Speaker 2 (07:37):
Now he's just ready for it.
Speaker 5 (07:39):
This is the herd.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
Ridiculous. That's why he's number one, bro. That's why he's
number one. I thought we were. No. Don't do that,
Rob G. Stop it. Rob G, listen, you're a gang
with us, okay? Rob G's the only producer who hates
a good way to ask questions. That's true.
Speaker 4 (07:55):
It's unbelievable. Rob G does have a little Dabo Sweeney
in him.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
He does.
Speaker 4 (08:02):
It's got to be my way. This is how radio
is done. It better be like this. You better do it, sound,
act like this.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
Colin does it right. Can't you be more like Colin?
Speaker 9 (08:11):
No, anyways, yes, big movement in the SEC, or at
least they're trying to make some movement. You guys have
been talking about Lane Kiffin for, what, about a week now?
Speaker 2 (08:19):
Speaker 9 (08:20):
What he's doing, trying to get the pros in the college,
couldn't get him in for the Clemson game, still whooped
that ass by 40 points, even said during the halftime speech, imagine.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
If we had our NFL players, what we would have
done to them. Shout out to Lane Kiffin.
Speaker 9 (08:31):
But in any event, the SEC is not going to
take this lying down. In fact, they filed an amended
complaint on Tuesday regarding their plans to add former NFL players.
And they're going to schedule a vote of the conference
presidents on whether or not they can expel LSU from
(08:51):
the conference altogether. According to the SEC rules, they need
at least two-thirds of the presidents to require a termination
of the school's membership. LSU has declined to comment. Nobody
actually expects it's going to come to this, but they're
flowing it out there. Like, if you guys do not
fall in line like the rest of them.
Speaker 2 (09:09):
You mean like the state of California? Then we are
going to kick you out of the club. You don't
want to get kicked out of the club.
Speaker 4 (09:16):
That's a bad feeling. You want to enjoy yourself. You
ain't get dressed, put on a cologne and all that
for nothing. Rob, I feel this way. Well, you know
how I felt about with Lane. I feel like something
bad is going to happen eventually. It always does with him.
It's always something a little slimy, something a little off-putting.
From your hero, and I'll say this, when it comes
to the SEC and what's happening here, I do find
it interesting that this is the hill they're willing to
die on for two guys that.
Speaker 2 (09:37):
They didn't even play. Like, and that.
Speaker 4 (09:40):
who knows when they'll play if they choose to, but
I'm making it, if you're Lane Kiffin, you have LSU
behind you, you know the players, the recruiting, obviously you
have a big name, you should be confident in what
you have and how good your team is, and obviously
you've smacked up Clemson, which we'll find out if that
was a good win that big or not, if Clemson's
any good, but my point is, is it.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
Really worth the lemon worth all this squeeze?
Speaker 4 (10:03):
If you got the SEC, the conference as a whole,
and what you coach and your team is in, You
have all the college footballers come out. You got the
Big Ten, other big conferences that said, we don't want this.
Other conferences, even smaller conferences, come out and say, we
don't want this. I'm just wondering, what's the battle to
win when you don't even necessarily need them? Not to mention,
you even threw it in their face. Because at halftime,
(10:24):
they asked him about it when he was up 51-10.
During halftime of the game, and he goes, yeah, imagine,
as Rob G was saying, imagine what.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
We had if we had pro players.
Speaker 4 (10:34):
Like, I think he almost can't help himself throwing extra jabs,
throwing extra darts at people and making people even more upset.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
Because, again, you got a whole conference that is saying,
we don't want this.
Speaker 4 (10:44):
You're doing it. Then you're trolling us about it. And
I think this is something that they will try to
take to court. And you want to eventually... is this
something he's going to go through or not? And I
don't think it's going to ultimately be worth it. Burning
the bridges all the way up. We might get to
where it's a two-league system, where it's the Big Ten
and SEC, and that's pretty much it when it comes
to college football and the playoffs and whatnot.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
We might actually get there.
Speaker 4 (11:06):
I know they're expanding, but that very well could be
where those are the only two conferences that ultimately matter.
Speaker 2 (11:11):
And you don't want to be on the outs of that.
Speaker 4 (11:13):
In your own conference, you don't want to be on
the outside, them to make maybe something ultimately kicking.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
You out because you want to have a couple of players.
That won't make that big of a difference, Rob.
Speaker 4 (11:23):
I just don't see the upside in continuing this battle
if you're laying Kiffin and the Tigers, but specifically him
and the way he's handling it.
Speaker 2 (11:33):
Kelvin, I'm going to disagree. And I'm going to say
this to you.
Speaker 1 (11:36):
I already brought up one example, which was NIL and
the state of California, right, which made it into law. College,
the NCAA and college football fought against it and said
that they would not allow California schools to participate. And
I just feel like Kelvin, you have to fight and
(11:57):
stand up for stuff.
Speaker 2 (11:58):
You can't always look for the easy way out.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
I can just imagine Kelvin being on that bus in Montgomery, Alabama,
telling Rosa Parks to just go to the back and don't.
Speaker 2 (12:13):
And don't.
Speaker 4 (12:14):
I can't believe you would bring Lane Kiffin, Rosa Parks
rolled around in heaven right now, that you would just
bring up Lane Kiffin with her. Lane Kiffin, who always
doing something scandalous, salacious, and leaving, Martin Luther King Jr.
Speaker 2 (12:31):
Is sitting here, I can't believe you right now.
Speaker 4 (12:34):
The Freedom Riders are looking at you right now like,
I know good and daggone well you didn't just bring
up Lane Kiffin and us.
Speaker 2 (12:39):
My point is... You better hurry up and get to
your point. Kelvin would be on the... The NAACP about
to give you a thumbs down.
Speaker 1 (12:46):
Kelvin was on the bus saying, hey, just come on
back here. Don't cause a stir. Don't say nothing.
Speaker 2 (12:52):
And you know what? Something... You can't even say it
with a straight face.
Speaker 1 (12:56):
Sometimes you got to stand up and you got to
fight for what you believe in.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
We're going to fight, all right. And Kelvin. I can't
believe you. Lane Kiffin, bless you. Amen. I can't believe you.
Speaker 4 (13:07):
Fight.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
John Lewis rolling around in heaven right now. He's got
two black players there. He's trying to get them paid. Oh,
my gosh.
Speaker 1 (13:14):
He's trying to get them paid. They don't have a
job in the NFL. There's money on the table. James
Baldwin is rolling around.
Speaker 2 (13:23):
He has eligibility.
Speaker 7 (13:25):
Amen.
Speaker 1 (13:25):
In heaven.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
Amen.
Speaker 4 (13:27):
Fred Hampton is rolling around in heaven right now. Malcolm
X is rolling around in heaven. I'm mad at you
by any means necessary right now.
Speaker 1 (13:38):
Calvin, you got to stand up for what you believe
in sometimes. Even if you go against the grain, you
could just automatically pay your nine cents and get on
the bus, or you can stand up and fight and say,
I refuse to do it.
Speaker 4 (13:52):
I'm going to fight you like Muhammad Ali right now,
who rolled around in heaven right now. I can't believe
you put Lane Kiffin with him. Lane Kiffin is going
to blow like the wind. In three weeks, he'll change
his mind.
Speaker 2 (14:06):
You know what? I never wanted him in the first place.
I thought about this was illegal. Muhammad Ali, trailblazer. Lane Kiffin, trailblazer.
I'm sorry.
Speaker 4 (14:15):
Elijah, take the camera off of me. The NAACP going
to give you the thumbs up. The ACLU about to
give you the thumbs.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
Matter of fact, NABJ might give you the thumbs down.
But you know what I'm going to get? A thumbs
up for the Marconi Award.
Speaker 2 (14:29):
How's that? You can have it. The SEC ain't even
going to give you one.
Speaker 4 (14:33):
LSU, the only thing you're going to get is a
free Smedium t-shirt from LSU.
Speaker 2 (14:38):
You think any cars crashed today? Muhammad Ali. Malcolm X.
Martin Luther King. Rosa Parks. Detroit Zone. Lane Kiffin. Hallelujah.
Speaker 10 (14:49):
I have a dream that one day on the red
hills of Georgia, football players can come back to college.
Sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners.
Speaker 2 (15:01):
Hey, Elijah, beam me off. You want to go Star Trek?
Beam me off. We don't have to be stuck in
the not promised. You know what would have been even worse?
What was that, lightning? Yes, lightning struck you. Did you
see that? Elijah had lightning striking me. Look at that.
He was trying to beat you. Lightning strike, there you go.
(15:22):
All right, hey look.
Speaker 4 (15:25):
The only thing worse would have been if you did
that in February. They're in Black History Month.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
Maybe June. Did you want to do it in June, June?
Speaker 8 (15:31):
Teeth?
Speaker 1 (15:32):
My only point was that sometimes you have to fight,
and it's not an easy road. I believe it's a
fight worthwhile. The kids have eligibility, and they should have
a chance to make money. They're not on a team.
They have eligibility, and I think it's worth the fight
in all seriousness.
Speaker 11 (15:47):
All right.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
We want to hear from you.
Speaker 8 (15:49):
877-99 on Fox.
Speaker 4 (15:52):
Wait, is the Trash Talking Tuesday still?
Speaker 2 (15:54):
Can I trash you? It is the odd couple.
Speaker 4 (15:56):
Can't believe you right now. Lane Kiffin with our ancestors.
We want to hear from you.
Speaker 1 (16:05):
877-99 on Fox.
Speaker 8 (16:09):
Yes.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
Pass the cornbread. You know what?
Speaker 5 (16:14):
Pass the collard greens.
Speaker 2 (16:15):
Elijah, make me vanish.
Speaker 5 (16:19):
God forbid Lane has some motion, Kelvin.
Speaker 2 (16:20):
I know Kelvin is so he's afraid of everything.
Speaker 4 (16:23):
You're going to put Lane Kiffin, you know, already don't
like him.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
All right. 877-990-FOX. We want to hear from you. It
is the odd couple sticks and stay.
Speaker 5 (16:34):
Especially if you support the trailblazers in the U S
of A.
Speaker 2 (16:39):
I have a.
Speaker 10 (16:39):
Dream that one day on the red Hills of Georgia,
The sons of former slaves and the sons of former
slave owners.
Speaker 4 (16:50):

Rob Parker, Kelvin Washington. On a Trash Talking Tuesday, Devin
Gardner going to join us here. Would you say your
name is Confederate Kelvin? I'm not dealing with you. You
side with Lane Kiffin, always dipping Kiffin. Devin Gardner joining
us in a minute. Last call. Y'all are so stupid. Kelvin,
(19:08):
I can't believe you. Lane Kiffin just wants to let
his people go.
Speaker 2 (19:11):
Exactly. I bet.
Speaker 4 (19:13):
Muhammad Ali. punching around in heaven right now. I can't
wait to hear what people got to say.
Speaker 2 (19:17):
Let's get to it.
Speaker 4 (19:17):
By the way, real quick, truck and bus drivers are
trained professionals, but the bigger the vehicle, the bigger the
blind spots.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
Don't linger. Pass with purpose or give the vehicle space.
Stay visible. Stay safe.
Speaker 4 (19:28):
America's pros rely on you. Paid for by FMCSA.
Speaker 5 (19:32):
I have a dream.
Speaker 2 (19:34):
Let's take some calls. Who we got? 877-99-05. Just take
some calls. We'll be talking.
Speaker 1 (19:40):
Alice in Pittsburgh. You're on the Odd Couple Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
What's up, Alice? How are you?
Speaker 7 (19:45):
Hi, how are you? How are you guys? I've missed
talking to you.
Speaker 2 (19:50):
Where have you been? Well, football season's coming, so Alice
is back.
Speaker 11 (19:53):
I know.
Speaker 7 (19:54):
You're on vacation forever.
Speaker 2 (19:56):
I know.
Speaker 7 (19:57):
Where were you?
Speaker 2 (19:57):
I know. Where wasn't he? I was traveling, Alice. I know. Crazy.
Speaker 7 (20:02):
I'm sure you must have, you know what? You deserved it,
and I'm sure you enjoyed it.
Speaker 2 (20:06):
Thank you.
Speaker 7 (20:07):
I've missed talking. You're talking about the eligibility thing.
Speaker 11 (20:12):
Yes.
Speaker 7 (20:14):
You know what? They should get it. They deserve to
be paid. The NCAA makes a lot of money from
these guys.
Speaker 2 (20:23):
Yes!
Speaker 7 (20:25):
No, they do. And you know what? What's bad is
that there were years ago that these guys were punished
for taking anything. There was a basketball player from Kansas State,
Jamar Samuels. I don't know why I remember this because
I was upset about it. It was years ago. But
this guy got $ 200 from a coach. borrowed $ 200 for
his mother's rent, and he was punished. The guy was, like,
(20:49):
banished from— it was during the tournament, too.
Speaker 2 (20:51):
They used to do it all to Alice.
Speaker 1 (20:53):
If you got a free pizza or tattoos or anything.
It was horrible.
Speaker 7 (20:58):
And this poor guy, he ended up playing, like, in
China or somewhere, and he had an easy career overseas.
But he was really good in the tournament.
Speaker 4 (21:05):
Oh, that was a story. I know exactly the story
you're talking about. Yeah, they did a 30 for 30
on that.
Speaker 2 (21:10):
Thanks, Alice. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Appreciate it. How about Andre?
It was Kansas, not Kansas State.
Speaker 8 (21:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (21:16):
Andre in Massachusetts.
Speaker 1 (21:17):
You're on the Odd Couple Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (21:19):
What's up, Andre? What's up, Dre?
Speaker 8 (21:21):
How you doing?
Speaker 11 (21:22):
Thanks for taking the call.
Speaker 8 (21:23):
Look.
Speaker 11 (21:24):
Go tell it on the mountain.
Speaker 8 (21:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (21:30):
Over the hills and everywhere.
Speaker 1 (21:35):
Go tell it on the mountain that Lane Caffin is right.
Speaker 2 (21:43):
Yes, yes, Brother Lane.
Speaker 11 (21:45):
Brother Lane doing the good work. Yes. Getting those NFL
players into the SEC, those 25 and 26-year-olds, brother Lane,
brother Lane. Rob, what are you talking about?
Speaker 7 (22:00):
Come on.
Speaker 8 (22:02):
He is no.
Speaker 11 (22:03):
Trailblazer fighting for the good of the community.
Speaker 2 (22:07):
Lane Kiffin is fighting for Lane.
Speaker 11 (22:09):
Kiffin just like he was when he was at Tennessee,
when he was at USC, and when he went through
his go-through offensive coordinator, UCT, then gets the opportunity at
Ole Miss. He was at Ole Miss for a hop, skip,
and a junk, and when LSU came with the bag,
what did Lane say?
Speaker 8 (22:25):
He said, I'm out.
Speaker 2 (22:26):
I'm gone.
Speaker 8 (22:27):
Never to be seen again.
Speaker 2 (22:27):
Lane always dipping Kiffin.
Speaker 1 (22:29):
What the NCAA has done to these kids, Lane Kiffin
is fighting for them, and I respect that.
Speaker 2 (22:35):
You can't even say it with a straight face.
Speaker 8 (22:37):
He's my hero.
Speaker 4 (22:37):
You can't even say it with a straight face. Lane
Kiffin is my hero. We'll ask Devin Gardner that as well.
Plus some other things. His former school, Michigan. What the
heck happened there with Western Michigan? Dang it, I know
they won, but that was ridiculous. We'll talk about it
with him right now. Steve DeSager.
Speaker 3 (22:51):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation. Catch all of our shows at foxsportsradio.com. And

Speaker 2 (23:04):
Steve, thank you.
Speaker 4 (23:04):
Appreciate it. Have a wonderful rest of your night. It
is The Odd Couple on a Trash Talking Tuesday. We
got Last Call coming up in a little bit, but
right now we are joined by Devin Gardner, of course,
former Michigan quarterback, college football, on Fox Analyst as well,
Devin Gardner, XCI.
Speaker 2 (23:24):
Give him a follow there. What's up, man? What's up, Devin?
How are you?
Speaker 8 (23:27):
What's happening? What's happening? I'm telling you right now, Rob,
don't do it.
Speaker 2 (23:31):
All right, hey.
Speaker 1 (23:32):
You know it's about to be done, Devin. You know
it's about to be done, Devin. I want to tell
you this. The last text I got from Devin Gardner.
Speaker 2 (23:38):
You ready? What did it say? I'm sick of you.
Remember that, Devin? Yes, I do. Yeah, that's what he
texted me. And I meant it. That's right, and he
meant it. Well, I don't know how sick he is.
He's about to get sicker.
Speaker 1 (23:48):
I wish you would. Now, Devin, I wish you were
a quarterback in there at Michigan. I think you could
probably go out there and do it. But let's get
to this game. And I thought it was disgraceful. I.
There's no way Western Michigan should not have won that game.
What was your vantage point when you saw that?
Speaker 2 (24:06):
What did you think?
Speaker 8 (24:07):
It was pretty disappointing. I don't like doing this, but
I have to agree with you. There's no chance that
in any world there should be that type of finish
for you to win the football game. I was under
the impression, and I want to give credit to Western Michigan.
They're a really good team. I had them two years ago,
and their coach is incredible. I think that he is
(24:29):
a rising star and going to be really good. But
there's still Western Michigan. Michigan, what, spent almost $ 40 million,
or maybe the number's a little skewed there, but I
don't know, something like that. And Western Michigan's highest paid
player probably makes like $ 200, 000. The roster construction just tells
you there's no chance that you can be in a
dogfight like that against Western Michigan, even though they are
(24:52):
a good team that won the MAAC a year ago.
And they had a really good game plan, but at
a point, Even if you look past in the start,
you like to think that you could turn it on, right?
Flip the switch and do what you need to do
to make sure you get out of there. And that
wasn't something that we saw. It wasn't any physical imposing
your physical will. That was scary to see because that's
(25:13):
about as easy as it's going to get, right? The
schedule that they have is very difficult. So it was
tough to watch. However, you know, We won, I guess.
Did we win?
Speaker 2 (25:25):
No, I guess.
Speaker 1 (25:26):
And then the NCAA comes out today, right, with the
statement that the Athletic got and basically said they blew it,
that the referees did not follow proper protocol. And, Devin,
you play college football. You cover college football. And I've
watched football forever for 40 years, and I've never seen
this other clock ever. It should be the clock in
(25:48):
the building that the players know. You look up there
and say, oh, there's 10 seconds left or whatever it is.
And the fans know how much time and everybody on
television knows how much time. How shocked were you when
they were talking about it wasn't synced up with the
clock that they have?
Speaker 8 (26:02):
Man, I was just stressed out because we're never going
to beat the allegations. Right? You know what?
Speaker 2 (26:08):
I will say.
Speaker 8 (26:09):
I'm like, my goodness, this is kind of fishy, but.
Speaker 2 (26:12):
You know. Devin, I'm going to say this real quick.
I'm going to say this real quick.
Speaker 1 (26:17):
For a minute, I had to look on the sidelines
because I thought Jim Harbaugh was still coaching.
Speaker 2 (26:21):
No, he just made some calls. That's all. He just
made some calls.
Speaker 8 (26:23):
Oh, you're talking about national champion Jim Harbaugh?
Speaker 2 (26:26):
Yeah, the one who cheated to get a national championship.
Speaker 8 (26:27):
I don't think he'd be in that dogfight with Western
with national champion Jim Harbaugh.
Speaker 2 (26:30):
No, because he would have all their plays.
Speaker 8 (26:32):
So, of course he would.
Speaker 10 (26:33):
That's right.
Speaker 2 (26:34):
Whatever it took to get the job done, Rob.
Speaker 8 (26:36):
Whatever it takes.
Speaker 4 (26:37):
Hey, I want to go here, of course, on with
Devin Gardner, former quarterback at Michigan, college football analyst for Fox.
Let me ask you about the position you played. Bryce Underwood.
Speaker 1 (26:49):
What's going on there where number one recruit... I think
I take Blair Underwood at this point.
Speaker 2 (26:53):
Well, you know.
Speaker 6 (26:53):
Oh, no.
Speaker 2 (26:54):
That's what I look like out here in these streets.
I'm sorry. You got.
Speaker 4 (26:57):
He's coming in, hot recruit. And you almost want to
listen to some greats last year.
Speaker 2 (27:01):
Maybe he's new. Maybe it's too big for him, but
he'll get better.
Speaker 4 (27:05):
That was not supposed to be the show he was
supposed to have an arch man and show manning showing
where art started off a little rough last year but
then he comes out this year it looks like he
took care of whatever texas state or whatever it was
he was supposed to that was not the case with
bryce what's going on you cover the position you played
the position what are you seeing why is he being
what he was supposed to be coming out of high
school and i'll.
Speaker 8 (27:26):
Try to be as concise as possible uh But we
did a whole show, The Blueprint. You can find it
on all the podcasts and kind of broke down some
of what happened during the game. I know everybody saw it,
but there are some small intricacies that I kind of
broke down to tell you exactly what happened and what
he's struggling with.
Speaker 3 (27:45):
However.
Speaker 8 (27:48):
I think that the bar is set so high for
a kid that I don't believe he was the number
one quarterback or player in America, right? That was, I
don't know how that happened. I don't know who didn't
do their homework. He was a really, really good player
in the state of Michigan. I'm talking about, he barely
lost football games, right? Two state championships, broke every record essentially.
(28:09):
But when you kind of dive inside of it, right,
he didn't play in a very strong league and different
things like that. So I don't blame him. I blame
the people who did the rankings and did their homework.
Speaker 3 (28:19):
That's on them.
Speaker 8 (28:20):
You can't punish the kid for that now. You have
to judge him fairly, though, by how he's improving, and
there hasn't been any improvement. Those are the facts. You
play last year, and a lot of things, you go
through the season and you think, okay, maybe you can
improve through the season, and you didn't see a whole
bunch of that, and so everybody else gets blamed. His
(28:41):
age gets blamed. The lack of a quarterback coach, which
wasn't true, gets blamed. The head coach gets blamed. Everybody
gets blamed, right? And at some point, you like to
think that the way the kids are being brought up now,
it's not the same as when I was coming or
obviously not when Rob was playing.
Speaker 2 (29:00):
Right?
Speaker 8 (29:01):
It's not the same. They have so many reps that
playing quarterback that... If you're paying a guy this kind
of money, you should expect him to perform, no matter
how old he is or whatever, right? He's got more
than 10,000 hours playing the quarterback position because of all
the year-round football, seven-on-seven, all those different things, right? So
the critique and all that, I think it's fair, even
though he is still a young kid. But you don't
(29:22):
see improvement last year. The bowl game, you don't see
much improvement. So now they go out and say, we're
going to go get Jordan Palmer, right? And Jordan Palmer
is going to make sure that he's incredible. right? He
works with him and then the spring game comes and
he just, it's almost, it feels worse because he knew
the coverage, right? Coach Witte they they were going to
play one coverage the entire game no blitz and he
(29:43):
just didn't look comfortable and it didn't look like he
improved right and so now it's like what do you
do with this right how do you how do you
what do you think about this right and so You
go for a whole summer now, right, into the fall
with Jordan Palmer, right? And he's supposed to fix all
these things. and it's the same, right? And so that's
really disheartening, not only for me as a fan of
(30:07):
Michigan because now I'm not a player anymore, but as
a person that loves good quarterback play and loves to see,
I want to see him succeed, like that's about as
disheartening as it can be. So I have no idea
what the fix is going to be, but they better
find out fast because in about, I don't know how
many hours it is, but I know it's not that long.
Oklahoma will be rolling in Ann Arbor.
Speaker 2 (30:28):
All right, I do want to ask you one last thing.
We're running out of time, but the Lane Kiffin story
and what he's doing and challenging the NCAA. Lane Kiffin
is my hero because I believe that what he's doing
for these kids is the right thing to do.
Speaker 1 (30:42):
They have a year of eligibility. They're making money in
college football. There's money for them to be made that
they can't make. They didn't make an NFL team. Where
are you on this controversy?
Speaker 8 (30:52):
I really don't like having to agree with you, dude.
It's annoying.
Speaker 2 (30:55):
Wow, what a show.
Speaker 8 (30:57):
I wanted to not like Lane Kiffin.
Speaker 2 (31:00):
He's a national treasure.
Speaker 8 (31:02):
Thank you. And then you go out and you do
what you did on the field.
Speaker 3 (31:04):
Yes.
Speaker 8 (31:05):
Because if he doesn't do what he does on the
field like what he did, now I have an issue.
Because you're starting to create distractions. You don't got your
ducks in a row, right? The main thing has to
remain the main thing. But if you can do extra stuff,
like help these kids and do the things like you're saying,
then I'm cool with that. And he pummeled him and
then gave him a little jab at halftime. What if
I had NFL players? Like that... I like it.
Speaker 3 (31:27):
I'm sorry.
Speaker 8 (31:28):
I know a lot of people will run through the
wrong way, arrogance or whatever the case may be, but
I like it, and he's got to find a way
to finish the deal so that it's not just talk
all the time.
Speaker 2 (31:37):
Well, it sounded like talk to me when you get
the new breaking news, Devin and Rob. So, Rob G.,
what do you have?
Speaker 9 (31:42):
Shout out Steve DeSegar pointed this out. Pete Campbell from
ESPN reporting LSU football is adding two players to their roster.
We'll complete it now at 105. This locks their roster
for the rest of the season, which will eliminate the
program's ability to add Daquan Wright and Zavian Harris.
Speaker 2 (31:55):
Terrible. Sounds like they folded. No. Hold it. Terrible. Like
the laundry I got to do tonight when I get home. Terrible.
Hold it. Terrible. Told you.
Speaker 6 (32:02):
Terrible.
Speaker 4 (32:02):
He's still my hero for putting up a fight. And
you know what he's going to do, Rob? The best
part about it, Rob G., and Rob Parker, and Devin,
is he's going to give him 24 hours. Yeah, we
didn't really want him anyway. You know, this is what
we decided.
Speaker 2 (32:12):
No, no. You know, we play hard. I don't think
he's going.
Speaker 8 (32:15):
To backtrack like that.
Speaker 2 (32:16):
No, I don't either. Have you listened to him? I
don't either. I'm with you, Devin. Wait a minute, Devin.
Speaker 4 (32:21):
What did he say about when he left Ole Miss? Oh,
I told all the players and we made a big
old thing. All the players said he ain't tell us nothing.
Speaker 1 (32:28):
What they did here is totally wrong, and those kids
should still fight in court, should still fight the NCAA.
Maybe not there, but they should fight for the right.
Speaker 8 (32:38):
The one thing I will say is I was a
little indifferent about it. I thought that it should be
the one time this can happen, right?
Speaker 6 (32:45):
Hey.
Speaker 8 (32:45):
We changed the rule after they made the decision to
go to the league. Maybe they wouldn't have done it. Okay,
give them a shot. But from here on out, I
don't care how old you are or how many years
you have left. If you decide to make an informed
decision that you're going to go to the NFL, you're
done playing college football. Devin, no, no, no.
Speaker 2 (32:59):
Devin, no, no, no. Why you didn't leave with that?
Speaker 3 (33:01):
Devin, Devin.
Speaker 2 (33:02):
How you going to leave with that? I got to
agree with you, Rob.
Speaker 1 (33:05):
Devin, Devin, there's a 47-year-old pastor playing college football because
he had a year of eligibility.
Speaker 2 (33:11):
But nobody has a problem.
Speaker 8 (33:11):
At football, I'm sure.
Speaker 2 (33:13):
But nobody has a problem with that. All right. It's
because it's for the Lord, Rob. He didn't play college football.
Speaker 8 (33:17):
Let him get his shot.
Speaker 2 (33:18):
No, he's 47 years old. It's for the Lord, Rob.
It's like J.R.
Speaker 1 (33:23):
Smith taking a spot away from a HBCU golfer because
he's 35 years old.
Speaker 2 (33:29):
And made $ 100 million, but he could play golf. Devin,
I'm mad at you. You're going to come out here
and say basically you're with us.
Speaker 8 (33:36):
No, I agree with the Lane Kiffin take, but I
also feel like those kids, I would have been okay
with them coming back. But after that, it's done, right?
Speaker 2 (33:43):
If you make a decision, you're done. No, if they
had eligibility, though.
Speaker 4 (33:46):
I get what he's saying. They had eligibility. But he's
saying even moving forward, if you have eligibility, you can't
come back.
Speaker 11 (33:52):
No, no.
Speaker 8 (33:52):
If you decide to go to NFL, you're done.
Speaker 6 (33:53):
Absolutely.
Speaker 3 (33:55):
Nah.
Speaker 2 (33:55):
Devin, thank you.
Speaker 1 (33:56):
You should lead with that next time. Devin, they all
make money. Everybody's a pro now.
Speaker 2 (34:00):
I'm sorry.
Speaker 8 (34:01):
Yeah, well, you're not.
Speaker 2 (34:02):
Going to steal it.
Speaker 8 (34:03):
Because like you said, you just said the 47-year-old is
taking the opportunity. What about the high school kids that
are suffering because of the.
Speaker 2 (34:08):
Way college is now?
Speaker 1 (34:09):
Nah, they couldn't make the team because they're not good enough.
Speaker 2 (34:11):
Thank you. No, no, no, no, no, no.
Speaker 4 (34:13):
The wannabe pros couldn't make the team because they're not
good enough, Rob.
Speaker 2 (34:16):
Right, but they're good enough for college. Thank you, Devin. Devin,
don't worry. It's trash talking, too. What the hell's in
the bag, man? All right. Hey, Devin, thank you, my man.
We appreciate you. Appreciate you. Good job. It's like, go blue.
I'm a little, you know, feel a little sick the
way I'm feeling. All right, you know what? I'm still.
Look how mad you are. I am mad because they
had a right fight. And you know what? Sometimes you
(34:37):
got to fight, Alex. What ain't fight?
