The big news of the day, we mentioned it throughout
the show. The Los Angeles Lakers have been sold what
like ten months after being purchased to Josh Kushner. Yes,
that Kushner, son in law of one Donald Trump or
related to Donald Trump, and some before in fashion and
Bob Iger Disney CEO former CEO put out a lot

of slop there at the end, but he made a
lot of money doing it. Looks it's all that really matters. Yes,
he absolutely is, and apparently twelve and a half billion
dollars worth of money. Yes, so he is not hurting
at all. But before the show, you and I were
texting back and forth about how we would approach this.
We didn't want to get in too much trouble. We
don't want to dive through deep into conspiracy theories. And
(06:12):
one thing you pointed out, which I thought was very
very interesting, is that in a year or less than
a year, Luka Doncic was traded for nothing and the
team that he has been the face of which is
the Lakers has been sold twice. What do you make
(06:37):
of that?
Speaker 4 (06:39):
That's a tough one because when you have a generational
talent attached to a franchise, you want to hold on
to that because you understand the value in that. You
understand what a generational player can do for building the brand,
(06:59):
raise the value of it. Right, So case in point,
he goes to Dallas, He's all NBA from the jump,
They get to a finals, Mark Cuban sells the team
right right, new owner comes in, They trade Luca. Luca
(07:20):
comes to the Lakers, they sell the Lakers. Luca's now
the only face of the franchise. They sell it again.
So you know, my question would be who has more
value or who represents more value for a franchise, Luka
(07:42):
Doncic or Lebron James. Right, what Lebron James did for Cleveland,
it raised the value of not only the region, but
that team to heights to where if Dan Gilbert was like, hey,
I want to get out of this thing, it would
have been a heck of a come up. The Lebron
(08:05):
comes to the Lakers, of course, the value of the
Lakers is already what it is, but he's there. It
sells for ten billion dollars? Right? They bring in Luca
and all of that. I just for me, I question
the fact that it seems like everyone in an ownership
or power position is trying to get away from Luca.
(08:27):
And I'm wondering why it is Luca someone you can
build a franchise around and add value to a set franchise,
because as you map those things out, it doesn't look
like it. Right. Are are they there? Are They're itching
(08:47):
to sell Golden State Warriors while Steph is there? No? No, right,
san Antonio's purse? Are they looking to get rid of
it with Victor winban Yama there?
Speaker 7 (08:57):

Okay? See Shay Gilders Alexander? Are they looking to get
rid of the different nuggets with Nicola? Okitch?

Are is anybody looking to get rid of the team
with those current faces of the franchise?

So what does that leave Luca in terms of value
to a franchise.
Speaker 3 (09:18):
You're asking me? I think one of the reasons why
in the long term, a Luca led team would actually
be more valuable than a Lebron team is because you
know that Lebron is not tied long term to anybody
or anything. Lebron James is a vagabond, He is a mercenary.
(09:42):
He is in the business of Lebron James. He has
never and will never be in the business of the Calves,
the Heat, the Lakers, the Sixers, whatever your team is,
whatever your business is. Like, if you're saying, hey, beats
by Dre, this is Lebron James' and of headphones, I
promise you that the minute JBL comes up with a

better deal, I'm gone, oh wow, you know what I'm saying. Like,
I just think that he is a business. He's a
business man. Like he's not just a business, he is
the business. Wherever he goes is gonna be profitable because
he is that big of a deal. The guys you mentioned,
whether it's Wenbsga Yo Kitchen in this case Luca, not
only because of their ages, but because none of those
(10:26):
guys are the singular entity that is Lebron James. A
lot of their value, not all of it, but a
lot of it is tied to the fact that they
play basketball, and they play basketball for this specific franchise
or this specific team. And if you are Luka Doncic,
I'm willing to bet that you probably still would have
got the ten billion, you know, whether he was there
(10:47):
or not, if it was just Lebron and not Luca.
I don't know if you get twelve and a half billion,
assuming this is on the up and up, if it's
just Lebron and not Luca, because what you're buying is
not just the international peal of Luka Doncic. Now you're
buying it for the next five, six, seven years. And
Lebron James, whether he retires or not, could play for
(11:10):
three different teams in five or six or seven years
if he wanted to five or six more exactly, you
know what I mean. Like, that's yeah, that's the difference.
And I think that's why if you're asking me in
just in the short term, of course, Lebron James is
gonna be more valuable because he puts butts in the
seats and he draws eyeballs like nobody has probably since
Michael Jordan. But if you're asking if I'm investing into

a franchise, into an entity moving forward, I'm gonna go
with the guy who I think is more likely to
be there longer.
Speaker 4 (11:42):
And that's Luca I would assume. So, yeah, Okay, So
Lebron James at the same age as Luca is, there's
no question there, right, No, of course it'll be Ron
Lebron James.
Speaker 3 (11:53):
No way, if you're saying Lebron at what is he
twenty six? Luca is now seven? Do we know how
the rest of Lebron's career is going to play out?
Speaker 4 (12:03):
Non?
Speaker 3 (12:06):
We just assume we're getting twenty seven, then it would
be Lebron. But if I know that it's going to
be the way that it plays out where he's always
going to be winning, but he's also always going to
be looking for the exit, then I don't know.
Speaker 4 (12:14):
Yeah, but Lebron, and you got to remember, Lebron came
into the league with expectations like no other player, right,
and lived up to him, exceeded like no other player.
Even the league didn't know what Michael Jordan was until
Michael Jordan became Michael Jordan. We had a pretty good
No one knew what Kobe was, right, That's why he

lasted till fifteen. We had a pretty good idea what
what Lebron was as a kid and now what he's become.
I would say the only other talent like that would
probably be in its infant stages, and that's Victor women
Yambo right right. The amount of expectation someone like Lebron

and Victor early on in their career has, it's it's.

There's probably you know, in the modern era, there's probably
only four guys in basketball who you could say had
those kind of expectations. It'd be Wemby, Lebron, Shack Kareem.
I don't think people have expectations for Jordan like that
because nobody had the same expectation for Magic Johnson, because

no one had ever seen anything like that before. You
didn't know if it was going to transfer the way
a six or nine point guard, right, But those other
guys you knew as soon as they you saw them.
I don't know how great they're going to be, but
they're gonna be great. Something would have to go horribly
wrong for those guys to not be maybe not the greatest,

but one of the greatest players who ever lived.

That's that's a pretty good point. That's good for it
as well, and they've all lived up to expectation, expectations
or so far and so far so good. Like I
love Wenby, I love what he brings. I love the
energy he brings to the game. I'm looking forward to
him staying healthy for the next ten years and we'll
see how this thing shakes out. But you're right, there's

a lot of expectation there, the fact that they got
to the finals in this third year. For me, he's
the favorite to come out of the West.

Really. Yeah, Now you don't think a quick tangent. You
don't think that the reports saying that they are going
to stick with Daron Fox that point.

all agree that Harper is ready for a bigger role.

to say that. Now, how they maneuver that and how
they use that is one thing. Look, when Darren Fox
was healthy, he was a bucket, right, he was a bucket.
Now he this whole offseat or this whole postseason hurt

right ankle, Yeah, ankle made some very poor decisions. Can
he rebound and come back from that? Of course he can't.
The young player a lot of talent he was like
that in Sacramento. So it's not like the worst thing
in the world to have an All NBA guard, an
All Star guard running point guard for you with a

with a young core like they have. I mean, that's
not the end all be all. That's not gonna stop
them from being the favorite coming out of the coming
out of the West.

Yeah, I do, because I think you look at what
players like Derk Novitski were to Dallas, You look at
what players like Ajana Sanpo was to the Monchy Bucks.
That that level of the San Antonio Spurs have built

a tremendous value overseas because of all of their foreign
born players. And so yes, I think when you can
it's already a brand, it's already synonymous with greatness and
with with with basketball. Here in the States and worldwide.
So when you can add another whole other country to it,

I think it just adds on to the dynamic value
that the Lakers have in the worldwide economy.

Okay, he's a global superstar and to that point, I
just looked it up. Last season, Lebron James generated two
point eight billion views globally across all social media accounts
for the NBA. Luka Doncic, who does not have nearly
the fashionable game that Lebron James does even at advanced age,

was third at two point one billion. I'm assuming now
that he's the only star in town, those numbers are
gonna go up, and then numbers might even flip.

Oh yeah, absolutely. I think Lebron has left, you know,
a kitchen that was wasn't crowded. Now you got a
lot of shifts in the kitchen in Philadelphia in terms
of top tier players. I mean, when you look at
that roster, Lebron James is a good piece for that,

but the heavy lifting is already there in Philadelphia, and
especially with Jalen Brown coming in, you know, Lebron James
is a complimentary piece for the first time in his career.

I'm glad you brought up Jaylen Brown. That's the perfect

You know what, you know, Russell Westbrook is a very
special player and what he's given to the game is
truly an example of a player that has really gave
it as all. Right, when we think about Russell Westbrook
as a player and the way he approached the game
every day, it was a high level of competitiveness, and

that's what we talk about, you know, as athletes, you know,
young people should you know, use him as an example
to make nothing out of something. Right, you think about
his career and what they thought about him. He couldn't
do this, He couldn't do that. But one thing you
can control is your energy and your mindset every single day.
And he brought it and him bringing it, you know,

you know, he did a lot of things. He's a
Hall of Famer to me, you know, and you know
what he's given to the game. You know, I respect
and him leaving, you know, I feel no other don't
I feel I feel nothing as far as just you
know him as a players, you know, like I feel

nothing that he's done, you know what I mean. Can't
go unrecognize like he's done so much.

but because I don't feel like the way he's been
talked about the last four or five years of his
NBA career is commiserate with how he should be remembered,
because towards the end there, rightly or wrongly, he was
made to be like a punching bag. I don't think
that was cool, given that he is, like you mentioned,

a Hall of Famer, first ballot Hall of Famer. Do
you feel that same way?

I think what he's done a lot of you know,
he trys you know, he transformed the game in a
way right as far as just the type of point
guard he was, you know what I mean, Yes, he

player being moved at a time where you know, a
talent like that who plays on both ends. It's a
rare commodity.

But at the same time, it's the business of basketball,
right The business of the business of basketball sometimes take
over and we can't do nothing about it, you know.
And so I think the Celtics, you know, they were
going to have to come to this crossroad at a
certain point in their career.

You know. And I think it was time.

You know, I think what you know, how Jalen approached
you know, being traded.

I think he did it with class. I think he
did it.

you know. But I think the Celtics had to make
a decision and right they wanted to, you know, figure,
you know, if we're going to make a decision, we
need to make it now, and we're going to use
this excuse to make sure it doesn't fall back on us,

the Celtics, you know, they had to make this decision,
you know, just to see which way their franchise was
going to go. You know what I mean, who's the leader,
who's the captain, Who's the.

And you've got two guys that you know, can't you know,
mend in a way you.

Know which they could, right, they won a championship, you

So they I really think the way they finished the

Jalen Brown's return to Boston was not given any of
the marquee games when the national schedule was released yesterday.

get Christmas Day. And Ephram maintains, well, that's because he's
no longer the big star on the team. There are
much more interesting storylines than Jalen Brown's returned to Boston.
I just looked it up in two thousand and eight,
after you guys be our Lakers, you know, in the
finals that folloween Christmas. What do you know, the Celtics

played the Lakers. It was a big rivalry matchup. Ephram
maintains that Jalen Brown is not good enough to get
a rivalry matchup on a marquee event. Can you please
set him straight about that? First of all, that's how
you answered.

You can't compare the Lakers versus the Celtics to the
seventy six ers, where Jalen Brown now becomes the third
best player on the team, going back to the Boston Celtics.
That those two things don't even go again.

So then does he did he deserve to have his

where Lebron can play against Bronni on Christmas Day a

you know what I mean, and not try to insert yourself,
you know, like these owners sometimes try to do, you know,
and message up the camaraderie and the flow of the team.

You know I had that issue playing with the Clippers,
Donald Sterling, I believe it.

the show. The Los Angeles Lakers have been sold what
like ten months after being purchased to Josh Kushner. Yes,
that Kushner, son in law of one Donald Trump or
related to Donald Trump, and some before in fashion and
Bob Iger Disney CEO former CEO put out a lot

of slop there at the end, but he made a
lot of money doing it. Looks it's all that really matters. Yes,
he absolutely is, and apparently twelve and a half billion
dollars worth of money. Yes, so he is not hurting
at all. But before the show, you and I were
texting back and forth about how we would approach this.
We didn't want to get in too much trouble. We
don't want to dive through deep into conspiracy theories. And

one thing you pointed out, which I thought was very
very interesting, is that in a year or less than
a year, Luka Doncic was traded for nothing and the
team that he has been the face of which is
the Lakers has been sold twice. What do you make

of that?
Speaker 4 (06:39):
That's a tough one because when you have a generational
talent attached to a franchise, you want to hold on
to that because you understand the value in that. You
understand what a generational player can do for building the brand,

raise the value of it. Right, So case in point,
he goes to Dallas, He's all NBA from the jump,
They get to a finals, Mark Cuban sells the team
right right, new owner comes in, They trade Luca. Luca
(07:20):
comes to the Lakers, they sell the Lakers. Luca's now
the only face of the franchise. They sell it again.
So you know, my question would be who has more
value or who represents more value for a franchise, Luka
(07:42):
Doncic or Lebron James. Right, what Lebron James did for Cleveland,
it raised the value of not only the region, but
that team to heights to where if Dan Gilbert was like, hey,
I want to get out of this thing, it would
have been a heck of a come up. The Lebron

comes to the Lakers, of course, the value of the
Lakers is already what it is, but he's there. It
sells for ten billion dollars? Right? They bring in Luca
and all of that. I just for me, I question
the fact that it seems like everyone in an ownership
or power position is trying to get away from Luca.

build a franchise around and add value to a set franchise,
because as you map those things out, it doesn't look
like it. Right. Are are they there? Are They're itching

to sell Golden State Warriors while Steph is there? No? No, right,
san Antonio's purse? Are they looking to get rid of
it with Victor winban Yama there?

in the long term, a Luca led team would actually
be more valuable than a Lebron team is because you
know that Lebron is not tied long term to anybody
or anything. Lebron James is a vagabond, He is a mercenary.

He is in the business of Lebron James. He has
never and will never be in the business of the Calves,
the Heat, the Lakers, the Sixers, whatever your team is,
whatever your business is. Like, if you're saying, hey, beats
by Dre, this is Lebron James' and of headphones, I
promise you that the minute JBL comes up with a

better deal, I'm gone, oh wow, you know what I'm saying. Like,
I just think that he is a business. He's a
business man. Like he's not just a business, he is
the business. Wherever he goes is gonna be profitable because
he is that big of a deal. The guys you mentioned,
whether it's Wenbsga Yo Kitchen in this case Luca, not
only because of their ages, but because none of those

guys are the singular entity that is Lebron James. A
lot of their value, not all of it, but a
lot of it is tied to the fact that they
play basketball, and they play basketball for this specific franchise
or this specific team. And if you are Luka Doncic,
I'm willing to bet that you probably still would have
got the ten billion, you know, whether he was there

or not, if it was just Lebron and not Luca.
I don't know if you get twelve and a half billion,
assuming this is on the up and up, if it's
just Lebron and not Luca, because what you're buying is
not just the international peal of Luka Doncic. Now you're
buying it for the next five, six, seven years. And
Lebron James, whether he retires or not, could play for

three different teams in five or six or seven years
if he wanted to five or six more exactly, you
know what I mean. Like, that's yeah, that's the difference.
And I think that's why if you're asking me in
just in the short term, of course, Lebron James is
gonna be more valuable because he puts butts in the
seats and he draws eyeballs like nobody has probably since
Michael Jordan. But if you're asking if I'm investing into

a franchise, into an entity moving forward, I'm gonna go
with the guy who I think is more likely to
be there longer.

And that's Luca I would assume. So, yeah, Okay, So
Lebron James at the same age as Luca is, there's
no question there, right, No, of course it'll be Ron
Lebron James.

No way, if you're saying Lebron at what is he
twenty six? Luca is now seven? Do we know how
the rest of Lebron's career is going to play out?

We just assume we're getting twenty seven, then it would
be Lebron. But if I know that it's going to
be the way that it plays out where he's always
going to be winning, but he's also always going to
be looking for the exit, then I don't know.

into the league with expectations like no other player, right,
and lived up to him, exceeded like no other player.
Even the league didn't know what Michael Jordan was until

lasted till fifteen. We had a pretty good idea what
what Lebron was as a kid and now what he's become.
I would say the only other talent like that would
probably be in its infant stages, and that's Victor women
Yambo right right. The amount of expectation someone like Lebron

There's probably you know, in the modern era, there's probably
only four guys in basketball who you could say had
those kind of expectations. It'd be Wemby, Lebron, Shack Kareem.
I don't think people have expectations for Jordan like that
because nobody had the same expectation for Magic Johnson, because

no one had ever seen anything like that before. You
didn't know if it was going to transfer the way
a six or nine point guard, right, But those other
guys you knew as soon as they you saw them.
I don't know how great they're going to be, but
they're gonna be great. Something would have to go horribly
wrong for those guys to not be maybe not the greatest,

but one of the greatest players who ever lived.

That's that's a pretty good point. That's good for it
as well, and they've all lived up to expectation, expectations
or so far and so far so good. Like I
love Wenby, I love what he brings. I love the

him staying healthy for the next ten years and we'll
see how this thing shakes out. But you're right, there's

a lot of expectation there, the fact that they got
to the finals in this third year. For me, he's
the favorite to come out of the West.

it's already a brand, it's already synonymous with greatness and
with with with basketball. Here in the States and worldwide.
So when you can add another whole other country to it,

I think it just adds on to the dynamic value
that the Lakers have in the worldwide economy.

just looked it up. Last season, Lebron James generated two
point eight billion views globally across all social media accounts

that he's the only star in town, those numbers are
gonna go up, and then numbers might even flip.

lot of shifts in the kitchen in Philadelphia in terms
of top tier players. I mean, when you look at
that roster, Lebron James is a good piece for that,

but the heavy lifting is already there in Philadelphia, and
especially with Jalen Brown coming in, you know, Lebron James
is a complimentary piece for the first time in his career.

it as all. Right, when we think about Russell Westbrook
as a player and the way he approached the game
every day, it was a high level of competitiveness, and

that's what we talk about, you know, as athletes, you know,
young people should you know, use him as an example
to make nothing out of something. Right, you think about
his career and what they thought about him. He couldn't
do this, He couldn't do that. But one thing you
can control is your energy and your mindset every single day.
And he brought it and him bringing it, you know,

you know, he did a lot of things. He's a
Hall of Famer to me, you know, and you know
what he's given to the game. You know, I respect
and him leaving, you know, I feel no other don't
I feel I feel nothing as far as just you
know him as a players, you know, like I feel

go unrecognize like he's done so much.

made to be like a punching bag. I don't think
that was cool, given that he is, like you mentioned,

I think what he's done a lot of you know,
he trys you know, he transformed the game in a

had a crazy personality and that's the way he approached

judge that to me, you know what I mean, Like,
that's why he had so much emotion.

So it's just like I think they used him as
a punching bag because, you know, being a villain sometimes,

champion with the Celtics, let's talk about the Celtics and
how one of the players have seemingly been vilified. Yes,

six ers. What are your thoughts on an All NBA
player being moved at a time where you know, a
talent like that who plays on both ends. It's a
rare commodity.

But at the same time, it's the business of basketball,
right The business of the business of basketball sometimes take
over and we can't do nothing about it, you know.
And so I think the Celtics, you know, they were
going to have to come to this crossroad at a
certain point in their career.

You know. And I think it was time.

You know, I think what you know, how Jalen approached
you know, being traded.

I think he did it with class. I think he

you know, just to see which way their franchise was

get Christmas Day. And Ephram maintains, well, that's because he's
no longer the big star on the team. There are
much more interesting storylines than Jalen Brown's returned to Boston.
I just looked it up in two thousand and eight,

finals that folloween Christmas. What do you know, the Celtics

played the Lakers. It was a big rivalry matchup. Ephram
maintains that Jalen Brown is not good enough to get
a rivalry matchup on a marquee event. Can you please

You can't compare the Lakers versus the Celtics to the
seventy six ers, where Jalen Brown now becomes the third

I mean. So whoever's buying the team, hopefully that they're
you know, you know the knowledge of letting others help,
you know what I mean, and not try to insert yourself,

really get down to it, the worsability, like we felt
like Mark Walters, there was the ability finally with this franchise.

It wasn't like he sold it to like you know,
Jeff Bezos or even a bomber like I don't even
know if these guys have the money to pay the
luxury tax or not trade some of our big contract players.
That's what I'm concerned about. And then you look at Kushner.
I mean, let's just talk about it. There's a tighter
you know, Ivanka Trump and you know Jared and Donald. So,

I mean, is Donald as the factor owner of the Lakers.
There's gonna be at games. It's so you think about
all that stuff when you wrap your mind around this,
and you're just like, where is this franchise going and
where do we go from now? So I'm hoping that
Bob Iger runs just like Ran Disney makes good decisions.

Yeah, I know that this was the Google trying to
get the World Cup, and we saw what happened there
when they try to get the World Cup. So I'm
like these guys just about the Lakers and for Laker Nation.

because we don't know what's going on with the franchise.
