Speaker 1 (00:00):
Boston is giving up the rains for a tiny fraction
of its budget. Billions are in the hands of city Hall,
but this year two million of that is the people's money.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
We trust in people's sense of knowing what's needed in
their community.

Speaker 1 (00:12):
Renaldo Costello runs the city's new participatory budgeting program. Basically,
residents submit ideas on how to spend the money and
then eventually vote on the most popular ideas to see
what wins out. I asked a couple people what should
be done with the spare cash that.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
I would invest it in, opening you food shelter.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
What is the two million exclusively to families? Period? There's
a form up online where people can submit suggestions. Ideas
up there now range from growing IVY on the city
Hall building and more bike lanes to more mental health support.
The idea here is mostly to get people involved.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
But I think it's an exercise in democracy and we
think really great projects will come out of that.

Speaker 1 (00:47):
And the deadline to submit those ideas is next week.
