I'm walking on a dirt path to the edge of
Sprague Pond with folks with an Apponset River Watershed Association.
It's where Paul Hanbury first documented a cyanobacteria algae bloom
along with some dead fish.

You can compare the water to what it looked like
over there. You can see it's kind of green and merchant.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
What's unusual about this algae bloom is the time of
year it's occurring. Executive director Ian Cook says they typically
appear during warmer months like summertime.

Temperature is such a fundamental thing for ecosystems, for rivers,
for wildlife that it does, it produces a lot of
unintended and unexpected consequences.
