Basato sull'opera teatrale Everybody Comes to Rick's di Murray Burnett e Joan Alison, è girato e ambientato durante la seconda guerra mondiale. Il film narra la storia di un ex contrabbandiere statunitense (Bogart) espatriato e costretto a scegliere tra l'amore per una vecchia fiamma (Bergman) e il sacrificio della propria felicità, aiutandola a mettersi in salvo assieme al marito (Henreid), eroe della resistenza antinazista. È considerato il film più popolare dell'età d'oro di Hollywood, uno dei più celebri e citati della storia del cinema, con battute entrate nell'immaginario collettivo e personaggi divenuti iconici, e fonte d'ispirazione per numerose altre opere.
Ricevette otto candidature ai premi Oscar ottenendo quelli per il miglior film, miglior regista e migliore sceneggiatura.
