Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey guys, welcome to Hot Takes and Hangouts. I am
here with my incredible guest, Chris Olson. How are you?
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Hello, I'm good.
Speaker 1 (00:06):
We just had an amazing conversation. So if you haven't
heard the full interview, that's the episode before this, so
go listen after. But for now, we're gonna dive into
all sorts of random hot takes.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Let's do it.
Speaker 1 (00:16):
Are you ready?
Speaker 2 (00:17):
I'm scared, but I'm ready.
Speaker 1 (00:18):
It's gonna be great, you're gonna nail it.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
It's gonna be great.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
All right, let's start with, you have a BFA in
musical theater, right? Yes. You were a theater kid. Why
have you not done Broadway yet?
Speaker 3 (00:29):
And that's what I'm asking.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
So you're ready.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
Yes. Yeah. Which camera? Come on. It's time.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
It's time.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Producer. Hello. Yeah. Well, I was living between New York
and L.A. for a while, too. I'm full New York now.
I'm ready. I'm ready. I'm excited.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
I've recently reposted some videos of me singing Broadway stuff.
Speaker 1 (00:51):
You were belting it out.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
I did a new one, too.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
Yeah. I love.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
It's time.
Speaker 1 (00:55):
Dream show to be a part of.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
There are... So many.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Or top three.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
I mean, if I were to say of something that's
currently on, I want to be in that Off-Broadway little
shop that they've been.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
Doing for a while.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
So good.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
My God, I love it so much.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
The production is so good. I just like, put me
in for a week. I mean, actually longer. Maybe like
four months.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
Put me in, coach. Just put me in. I think
I'd be great.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
Please.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
Uh-huh.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
But I'll audition. Like, I'll do... Just let me... Hello, producer.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
You're ready. You're ready for Broadway.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
Yes.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
Okay, we're gonna do it.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Yes.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
Okay, your viral coffee run series is How Many People
Got to Know You. What really went into planning those
and how much was scripted versus unscripted?
Speaker 2 (01:42):
There was no script to it, per se.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
There were times that the celebrity would know I'm bringing
coffee to them, but it was.
You're gonna i want like they're going they were reacting
to me bringing them the coffee it was it was
like i it was way more um diy than i
think people kind of thought it was like it it
(02:07):
turned into online this big like um oh he he's
doing this for this or it's it's very um it
it became it It became such a thing. It had
such a life in a way that I was so
proud of. I was like, I cannot believe that this
has turned into what it is. But it was always, like, me,
my phone, and a coffee cup. And, like, just traveling
(02:30):
around with this coffee cup everywhere. And a lot of
the time, it was a paper coffee cup, and it
was the same one. Like, I would refill that.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
It was.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
It was very it probably should have been higher budget
at some points. Probably should have had someone. But that
was the point.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
Some guy did make me he 3D printed this like
phone holder and cup holder thing that ended up going viral,
him making it. And I ended up using that for
a while. And that was that was pretty cool.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
Did you bring coffee to someone who you thought was
going to say no? And you were like, wow, I
can't believe they agreed to this.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
I don't think there was ever a time I was scared.
I was like, oh, maybe they'll say no.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
I think it was.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
I was more shocked at the people who ended up
knowing the bit or being like, oh, my God, are you.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Wait, do I get to do this now? Like, are you... Wait,
are you going to do a coffee video with me?
And I'm like, yeah. Do you want that?
Speaker 3 (03:31):
Like, you know this? What are you talking about? I
remember that, like, specifically with Sabrina Carpenter. I was like.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
I do. And she was like, absolutely.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
She was so excited for it right away. And I
was just like, that's crazy. It's hard to remember that
every time someone comes up to me in person, it
feels so great to have the in-person connection. But so
much of the time, we're behind screens towards each other.
(04:02):
And I think it's just such a lovely memory every
time that I'm like, my God, yes, these videos are resonating.
You're like, you're enjoying these and, and you're having a
good time, even though it's like, that's there. I could
see that digitally if I wanted to, but in person
is just like, there's nothing like that.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
Yeah. Such an iconic series. Truly. This is a fun one.
A lot of people online think you and bestie Megan
trainer have some beef. Do you want to clear the air?
Speaker 2 (04:32):
Yeah, no beef, maybe beef.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
What I'm like, I mean, we I'm like, are we
always kind of play a joke on the Internet in
ways they thought we were childhood friends for the longest time?
Because that was the first video that we ever made together.
And then we dispelled that myth so many times. But
there are still people who are like, but you grew
up with Megan, right? And so you asked me that question.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
And I'm like, have we said we had beef?
Speaker 3 (04:59):
Because there's something that did I just dispel? a bit
we were doing, but I don't think, no, there's, there's
currently no beef. I'm just now in New York full time.
She's in LA.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
I miss her.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
I miss being gunkle Chris to the kids. I miss,
I'm like, I, I feel very much a part of
the trainer family and it feels like that is our relationship.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
At this point.
Speaker 3 (05:22):
But we talked like yesterday. Cause I posted an Instagram
post about the book. Then we DMed for a while.
Like we're, she's just, we're family now.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
For sure.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
Leave it to the internet to try to create some drama.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
Yeah. But if you want, if you guys want to
come up with a good story, we'll run with it.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
Right.
Speaker 1 (05:40):
Sure.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
Yes. We are fighting. That's right.
Speaker 1 (05:43):
Yeah. That's right.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
Yeah. Okay.
Speaker 1 (05:45):
You've taken a lot of time to work on you, right?
And your mind, body, and spirit. In your next chapter,
what are you looking for in a partner?
Speaker 2 (05:53):
Nothing. Nothing. It's me. I'm looking in the mirror. I'm
not trying to look for a partner.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
I think was, is the, is what is my main current, like,
I know that that part of life and everyone says, Oh, well,
when you're not looking, you find someone. If that is
the truth, that'll be great. But I don't, I feel
so whole as a person. I feel so like, um, the, the,
the circle of people I have in my life make
(06:23):
me feel so full. And I think that has been, um,
like the, my main, the conclusion of my summer really
is just like, I have so.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Many great people in my life.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
It's if someone wants to join that great, they're going
to have to fit in with the already incredible people,
but it will be an enhancement. It's not going to
be something that needs to, to fill a spot that's missing.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
Oh, I love that. Yeah. An enhancement. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
And I hope to be that for them as well. Yeah.
But as of now, I also love my, don't, I
don't want anyone in my home. Oh, I want to
be alone. I want to be alone.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
I'm going to be home.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
Oh my God. I don't have FOMO.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
I have what someone else was saying is Jomo joy
of missing out. Let me be home. Let me be
home and alone. And no one needs to talk to
me at least for a little bit. I'm not like
I'm fully a social, like I will never speak to
anyone again. And like, I'm going to be shut in forever.
I do love connection and, I don't want anyone in
(07:28):
my home.
Speaker 1 (07:28):
You just don't want someone's sweaty T-shirt on your floor.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
They're going to have to pick that up for sure.
For sure.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
I mean, I keep it pretty clean, too. But I
also just love like I I just love silence, which
is ironic because I'm like, but I'm a talker. We
sit down at the start of this and I'm like,
you're going to have to tell me to shut up.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
But that's, I save it.
Speaker 3 (07:52):
And then I go home and I'm not going to
talk for like however many hours.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
I don't need to.
Speaker 3 (07:57):
Right.
Speaker 1 (07:57):
You're just, you're done. Yeah. You're done. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
But I'm still alive up here.
Speaker 1 (08:01):
Of course.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
Lots going on.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
I don't doubt it. I don't doubt it. What is
the most unexpected DM you've ever received?
Speaker 3 (08:10):
Oh, unexpected DM. I mean, there have, there've been a
lot over the years. I'm always excited when, there's a
DM period. I mean, an unexpected one, like recently was
after I saw Ariana Grande's most recent show, I had
(08:30):
posted a bunch of stuff and.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
She was in the DMs after.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
And I was like, this is, you don't, you don't,
I'm like, save your time, Ariana. I'm like, I, I'm
so happy that we, that like, she was so nice. She's, she's,
she has always been so nice every time we've spoken and,
But I, that's like, I've been an Ariana Grande fan
since I was a kid. Like I was, when she
(08:55):
was in 13, the musical on Broadway, I was aware
of her.
Speaker 2 (08:59):
I loved, I was a Broadway kid. So like growing up,
I just loved all of it.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
And so even just seeing her name pop up in
the DMs, like still gives me like, I can't, that's,
it's always unexpected, always unexpected, but always so lovely.
Speaker 2 (09:15):
I'm so grateful.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
And I'm like, I can't believe that this is even
a thing.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
Top three Ariana Grande songs.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
Oh my God.
Speaker 1 (09:25):
Top three.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
It's tough. I mean, right now I have been listening
to pedal on repeat.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
So like I do is probably my most played currently,
but then I also really like big or the warning signs,
the interlude. And then I want to say big fee. I, well,
I want to, let me give one that's not pedal
because I, Oh, my God. My first ever favorite song
(09:50):
from hers was Tattooed Heart from Yours Truly. But if
but what i'm listening to the most now are um
pedal songs so i want to say i want to
say oh oh god it's like there are so many
there's also stay oh well we.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
Have okay you've named like 19 okay right okay.
Speaker 2 (10:08):
Like i do tattooed heart POV from Positions.
Speaker 1 (10:14):
Solid.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
Yeah. I'll give three different albums. But then I'm leaving
out Eternal Sunshine.
Speaker 1 (10:19):
You had to pick three.
Speaker 3 (10:20):
Okay, right.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
You had to pick three.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
Locked in.
Speaker 1 (10:22):
Okay, two more, two more. If your book had a soundtrack,
what's the first song that has to be on it?
Speaker 2 (10:33):
Oh, my God.
Speaker 3 (10:34):
That's a really good question. I wish I had thought
of that. If it had a soundtrack, the first song
or the album that goes.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
Along with it.
Speaker 1 (10:42):
Or whatever you want. What would you pick?
Speaker 3 (10:46):
It's so melodramatic and like on the nose, but like
tortured poets department, Taylor Swift. I mean, like I want
to like look at the camera at myself and be like,
are you fucking kidding?
Speaker 2 (10:57):
Shut up.
Speaker 3 (10:58):
But also like, yeah, I am. Tortured poets is a
is kind of theater kid, dramatic ramble. And that's me
at the same time. She's unafraid to just say everything
in that album. And I, so I feel like that
is an album I attribute, especially to the beginning where,
I mean the beginning, like those first few pages, it
(11:20):
is kind of like an abstract introduction to a life story.
And I, I always felt like that was, I was,
it was an interesting, it was a, it was a
conversation with, with myself and the team of like how
to start it because do I want to start it?
in a place that feels more poetic and abstract. And
so that's why Tortured Poets really fits the bill for that,
(11:42):
I think.
Speaker 1 (11:43):
I like that one. And final question. For anybody listening
going through their own journey of addiction or self-acceptance or
just trying to survive, making it through the other side,
what advice do you have for them?
Speaker 3 (11:59):
We have, if you're listening to this, you have already
gotten through many bad things that you have been through
in your life, different scales, they can be something as
small as like something that someone said to you as
a kid, you got through that, you got over it,
or something really big like the things I was struggling
(12:21):
with in the book. The point is, if you are
still here, you have gotten through things and whatever's happening
right now is another one of them that you will
get through.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
It always ends.
Speaker 3 (12:31):
I remember in high school, someone was telling me, when
I was going through that relationship with that abusive guy, um,
that the good news is nothing lasts forever. And the
bad news is nothing lasts forever. This, this too shall pass.
It feels so basic and it feels kind of simple,
but I would repeat that in my head and like
(12:53):
at the times that I was feeling the most anxious
or feeling like nothing was going to end and it
was only going to get worse. Um, Sometimes it does
get worse before it gets better, but it always does
get better.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
It always will pass.
Speaker 3 (13:06):
And everyone's story is going to look different. What I
did to get sober, what I did to, like, in
terms of my sexuality, what I did on social media
was my journey. That might not be exactly how your
journey is going to look or what you need. I
think it's not necessarily... The story is not about advice either.
(13:28):
It's just about how... you will get through the things
that you have gone through and are going through.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
And there's going to be more.
Speaker 3 (13:35):
I'm going to go through plenty more hard things that
I don't even know about yet. And I'm already exhausted
from them, but I know I'll get through.
Speaker 1 (13:43):
Yeah. What a beautiful note to end this on. Chris Olson,
thank you so much. You survived the rapid fire round.
Everybody read his book, I Think My Therapist Hates Me.
Thank you so much. Thank you.
