Speaker 1 (00:00):
One interview, we were interviewing a guy that was overseas
and it was a zoom interview and it was so
dope because he didn't even know I was in the
Like I wasn't in the zoom. I was just in
the room, so he didn't even know. And they asked him, like,
what do you like about the Celtics?
Speaker 2 (00:15):
What do you like? Like have you watched the Celtics before?
Speaker 1 (00:18):
He like, man, I grew up watching, like I love KG,
I love Rondo, but my favorite player man Isaiah Thomas.
He didn't even know I was in there, so I
got in the video like, man, nice to meet you, bro.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
He was tripping out.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
So it was dope because like that wasn't set up
and for him to say that about myself and it's
just you know, that was just super cool. So like
being in them them rooms, seeing all the you know,
front office guys from all the other teams, seeing all
the former players, it was it was a super cool
(00:52):
moment for me because like this has been not the
easiest you know transition, Like I want to play first
and foremost, like because I can still play at a
high level, but I still got to look out for
what's best for my future and knowing what I want
to do moving forward. So just get my feet wet,
bro and add into the resume.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
All right, welcome to another episode of Point Game. I'm
of course joined by my co host Isaiah Thomas it Man.
We got a lot to cover. Conference finals are here.
But I did want to kick off this episode. I mean,
you were making news, we got a you got a
new gig to announce, so why not. I don't want
to put words in your mouth. Tell us a little
(01:52):
bit about this development that happened over the weekend and
some backstory on that.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
It's been in the works for a while. We were
just trying to make sure every thing made sense for
both sides. Something that I always wanted to do. Be
a part of an organization, be a part of the
front office, and help make these decisions that are being
made down the line. So this is a h a
step in the right direction in terms of, you know,
(02:16):
hopefully one day maybe being a GM or you know,
a head of basketball operations or you know, whatever whatever
the game of basketball takes me.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
But I I.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
Want to be a part of the decision making and
this is a step in that direction. And you know,
the Celtics did did right by me. They they they've
been wanting me to do this for a while and
it was something of interest, and you know, we came
to something that made sense and it and it still
allowed me to be able to do these things like
do our podcast, you know, coach Coach my Boys, which
(02:51):
was very important for me.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
And then also just.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
Being able to steal you know, work with broadcasting and
analysts and talk basketball and do all those things that
I'm very very passionate about. So I got to give
a big shout out to the Celtics, Brass Stevens and
you know, the whole organization and wanted me to be
a part of something that they got going on. And
you know, this is only the beginning. So I'm excited.
(03:17):
This is something I can go pro in as well,
you know, my second act in my life, but staying
around the game of basketball and doing something that I love.
So it was cool, you know, my first I was
at the Combine this past week. It was super cool
to experience that on the other side with me being
a player and being able to experience that, you know,
(03:38):
fifteen years ago.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
It's a full circle moment.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
So I was I was like a kid in a
candy shop, like just smiling the whole time, just being
able to be in that space. And you know, in
the basketball world, you know so many of the same people.
So all these people that I'm interacting with, I've known
since I've been in high school, whether it be in
college scouts, nbas outs, front office guys, former players. So
(04:03):
it was definitely like a family reunion this past week,
and I was welcome with open arms just in that space.
So I'm I'm excited. I think this is just only
the beginning, and you know, it's it's it allows me
to be able to get answers to the test and
be able to you know, give that back to the
(04:25):
kids I'm able to touch, and especially my boys.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
That's dope. I mean, yeah, anyone who's listening to this
pot and just seeing you, even like off the court,
heard you. Honestly, it's no surprise, like you love the
game of basketball, and we come on here. We even
have a segment called no days off or shouting out
players who aren't getting the shine. And also you, like
you said you said as a player who was drafted,
you know, late in the draft and became the face
(04:51):
of a franchise, Like I just think it's cool and
you know, just wanted to you know, shout you at
like this is this is awesome that it's official capacity
and it's from you know, the Celtics. I think fans
have said, like, man, you gotta do right by it.
He's done so much. Even in the success the championships,
everyone's like we got to remember the I era, and
so it was just cool as a basketball fan to
(05:11):
see that and then to have him talk to you
this whole season to know like all this this wisdom
and like shouting out players and be like, oh I
knew this kid when he played in high school or
I played, I worked out with them, Like this is
perfect man, It's it's really cool and it's exciting to see.
I mean, do that. Do I think the Celtics need
your help? I don't know, but I saw good man.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
You know it ain't personally just gotta do what we
gotta do, baby.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
Yeah, Well that's exciting. Well a little bit of on
that because you went to Chicago for that combine what
were some exciting things you saw like with just that
that that process and like you said, it's official, now,
what was it like like what type of notes you
take and what type of interactions are you having with
some of these players.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
It was dope because I got to sit in on
the interviews which are are are very important, and it
just brought me back to when I went through the
NBA draft process of you know, trying to impress the team.
All you need is one team to fall in love
with you, and to go through that interview process as
a player is you know, it's hectic, like you're a
little nervous. You don't know what they know. Actually you
(06:16):
know that they know a lot, but you don't know
what they're going to ask. So just being that in
that space as obviously not the player, and being able
to ask questions and really relate to these kids because
they know me, like they don't always know anybody in
the front office, Like they know the face of the organization,
but they don't know everybody else that's involved in the
front office. So it's easy for me. Man, I'm able
(06:39):
to chop it up with these guys because I can
relate to them. Obviously I'm a lot older than them,
but I'm still a part of the game in the game,
i still work out daily, So these are kids that
you know, I could still bust their ass as well.
So they have that respect for me, and I have
that respect for them.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
And it was super cool.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
Just being in in that face and just sitting back.
I wasn't the one really taking control of the room.
I was sitting back trying to learn, just seeing what
they what they want to know. Hearing these young men
out and seeing you know them push themselves to be
the highest pick possible.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
So one little one one interview.
Speaker 1 (07:16):
We were interviewing a guy that was overseas and it
was a zoom interview and it was so dope because
he didn't even know I was in the Like I
wasn't in the zoom. I was just in the room,
so he didn't even know. And they asked him, like,
what do you like about the Celtics?
Speaker 2 (07:31):
What do you like? Like have you watched the Celtics before?
Speaker 1 (07:34):
He like, man, I grew up watching like I love KG,
I love Rondo, but my favorite player man Isaiah Thomas.
He didn't even know I was in there, so I
got in the video like, man, nice to meet you, bro.
He was tripping out. So it was dope because like
that wasn't set up and for him to say that
about myself, and it's just, you know, that was just
(07:55):
super cool. So like being in them them rooms, seeing
all the you know, front office guys from all the
other teams, seeing all the former players, it was, it
was it was a super cool moment for me because
like this has been not the easiest you know transition,
Like I want to play first and foremost, like because
(08:15):
I can still play at a high level, but I
still got to look out for what's best for my future.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
And knowing what I want to do moving forward.
Speaker 1 (08:23):
So just getting my feet wet, bro and adding to
the resume, and like I said, shout out to Brad
Stevens and the Celtics, Mike Zarin, all those guys that
just wanted me to be a part of something. And
you know, it's always best when when when you're wanted
and guys want you to be a part of something
and they they they believe that they need you to
(08:43):
for the better man of the ultimate goal and that's
winning the championship. So you know, I'm all ears, I'm learning,
I'm a rookie in this space, but you know I'm
I'm gonna be a Hall of Famer in this as.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
Well, yeah, that's cool, man. I mean that's the thing
is like that you can you can find find that
thing in a player that you know that other gms
or scouts weren't finding in.
Speaker 2 (09:05):
You, in that in that draft you know exactly.
Speaker 3 (09:08):
And knowing it's past what you did in college or
like a certain nugget that a kid can say in
an interview, or knowing about a chip on a shoulder
or anything. So that's just really cool that that is
your job, because I yeah, I think it's continuing like
what you you've contributed to this game in just another
sort of role.
Speaker 1 (09:28):
So and and to piggyback on that, like I'm really
doing this. I want to be able to create an
avenue for the small guards.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
Man.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
I want to know why the game is going away
from the small guards. I want to know why, like
teams aren't you know, excited about looking at a small guard,
So I can have those answers for all the smaller guards.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
Coming up in today's game.
Speaker 1 (09:50):
So, like, I want to break that barrier, like not
just as a player, as I was able to do
as somebody in the front office. So when we do
go back and forth on these decisions, I could break
it down to somebody who's been in been in those shoes,
and break it down to somebody who hasn't been in
those shoes as a player, and what the uphill battle
(10:10):
is fighting as the undersized guards. So there's so many
things that I want to learn and I want to
know and I want to get back to, you know,
the next generation of basketball players trying to make you dope.
Speaker 3 (10:20):
Man, that's great to hear. And then so you went
from Chicago and then you went to Indiana for a tournament.
So like knowing that that's your role, does it change
you know, because you're coaching your son's team, does it
change how you view the game, how you're coaching the game?
Are you even like obviously the goal is to win
some games, where you are you trying to tell some
of these players like you're here, but you got to
(10:42):
develop this thing. I'm seeing this part of your game
you can change not only to win this game, but
also to have a future in basketball. Is that sort
of a mindset that is going to be new for
you going forward?
Speaker 1 (10:52):
It's just something I've already done though, Like I'm trying
to develop these kids. I know the development is very important,
but I'm also giving them the answers to the test,
like this is what they're really looking for. So you
don't have to do the most to get seen. You
just got to have You just have to have a
superpower in something and ride and die with that. So yes,
my my biggest thing is development.
Speaker 2 (11:13):
But CJ.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
Most importantly, we're winning, bro where we're we're winning, and
we're we're going to preach that because we're not going
to sugar sugarcoat that, like we're gonna play, We're going
to try to play at the highest level. But also
knowing that winning is important, Like it's not the most
important thing right now, but is it? It is very
important because if you win, the eyes will be on you.
(11:36):
Nobody wants to see a really good player on a
losing team. That's just that's just facts. So I try
to preach those things to the kids that I'm able
to interact with each and every day. And it doesn't
even have to be a part of my program too.
Like if I see a kid and I see them
doing something that they could be corrected on, and I'm
always gonna chop it up with them and holler at
them because I think that's that's what I would have
(11:57):
won it when I was a kid growing up in
along this journey. So it's super cool because I had
these moments personally individually, so I always go back to
those moments as a player and then see what I
would have wanted to know moving forward to make the
game easier for me. Because if you got the answers
to the test, like you should aceit for the most part.
(12:18):
And that's what we want to get back to these kids,
you know, on this journey.
Speaker 3 (12:23):
Well on the wanting to win front man, And it really
cracked me up. And people, man, you're underrated. Hilarious on
Twitter because I saw a tweet that You're like, sometimes
I wish I could just check into these games.
Speaker 2 (12:36):
I was so mad. No, not at all. I was.
Speaker 1 (12:40):
I was like, oh my goodness, at my players and
not even my player. I'm like, just let me get
like three minutes, bro, and I changed the whole game,
Like I get us to where we're comfortable and we're
gonna win. So you know, that's my competitiveness in me.
Like I said, I practiced with the kids weekly, so
like I'm I'm up and down with those guys and
(13:02):
I'm still in that space of wanting to play and
wanting to be a kid, and just wanting these kids,
these young men to take advantage of their opportunity because
it's out there, it's there for you, and you got
to know, like if opportunity doesn't go away, it goes
to someone else. And I try to preach that to
these kids because so many of these young men are
(13:23):
on this journey of trying to make it, whether it's
to college, whether it's to the NBA overseas, there's a
fine line. It's like, what's the difference between you and
the next guy. So that's what I'm trying to preach
to these young men.
Speaker 3 (13:42):
Let's transition to because there were some big games of
the weekend and obviously I want to get into the
conference finals, but let's talk about how we got there.
Let's start with the Spurs Timberwolve series, which we thought
was going to be a battle, and it was a battle,
but it ended in six with the Spurs coming out.
Any reactions you saw, even just like seeing in what
I guess the Spurs reaction to the Timberwolves really giving
(14:04):
them a fight, and what they can take in that
next series. What are some things that you may have
learned in that close out game. The Spurs took care
of business, man.
Speaker 1 (14:13):
They just handled business like. That's what it was like.
They played no games. In that close out game, they
showed that they were the better team. But you got
to give a shout out to Minnesota. They dealing with injuries.
They pushed one of the best teams in the league
to six games. They had a chance to force a
game seven, which they came up short. But I just
(14:33):
I think Minnesota didn't have enough. Obviously the Spurs are
rolling right now, but Julius Randall not having a good game,
Anthony Evers giving it his all and not being one
hundred percent healthy, and then obviously Dante DiVincenzo being out
like that really hurt. That would have been a key
piece for them in this series and trying to, you know,
(14:55):
move past the Spurs.
Speaker 2 (14:56):
But we got to tip our hat off to the Spurs.
Speaker 1 (14:59):
Man.
Speaker 2 (14:59):
They handle business. Obviously. It was a shocker in game.
Speaker 1 (15:01):
One, not winning game one, but but but then also
losing game what was that Game three when Winby was
out our game four? So if Wemby stays in this series,
might be five games. Yeah, you know, if weinby don't
get ejected. This series might be five. So I think
Minnesota's experience took those guys the six games. I don't
(15:24):
think they had enough talent to beat the Spurs, but
they fought and that's all you can ask for.
Speaker 3 (15:29):
Well, So putting on your GM hat because it's it's interesting.
You know, in the last few years, we've seen the
Timberwolves sort of have that rise of goun End. They
got you know, go bet, they got Devincenzo, and we
thought this is a team that we would see in
the finals. But all of a sudden, we saw the
Spurs team rapidly develop and they have a deep roster.
Dylan Harper is way further along than we thought. Like
(15:50):
nothing is going to change come next, you know, playoffs.
What what are the Timberwolves gotta do it? Like? And
the answer isn't blowed up or fire Chris fin Like.
He's a legit coach. So what do you do to
shape things up to put this team over the top
to even compete against an okay SNA Spurs.
Speaker 1 (16:10):
I think the first and most important thing you do,
you got to find a point guard, like a high
level point guard.
Speaker 2 (16:15):
It doesn't have to be an All Star, Yeah, and
that's tough.
Speaker 1 (16:19):
Like, let Mike commonly be a vet and come off
the bench, make things happen here and there, But you
need a point guard that can make things easier for
Anthony Edwards or it's going to be tough moving forward
because he's exhausted. He's wasting so much energy doing it all,
and that's tough. Like as a young player, Yeah, you
know you can do that, and you feel like you
can do it all, but over time, as we've seen
(16:42):
obviously we'll talk about the Detroit Pistons next, but as
we've seen, in a guy that has to do it
all the whole season, you're human.
Speaker 2 (16:52):
It's not realistic to be able to do that.
Speaker 1 (16:54):
So I think the most important thing is then finding
a high level point guard that can make things easier.
And he doesn't have to be a pass first point guard.
It could be a guy that can score the ball
as well, but put pressure on the defense every time
down but also being able to put Anthony Edwards in
his spots and make things easier for him moving forward.
Speaker 2 (17:14):
And then you got.
Speaker 1 (17:15):
To figure out what you want to do with Julius
Rendo as well, Like that's that's something that's going to
be a question coming up in this offseason. I don't
think they're in panic mode right now, but I do
think they need to upgrade the roster. And then you
also got to look at Dante Devintenzo. He's not going
to be available to you know, at least the playoffs
(17:36):
if he comes back next year.
Speaker 2 (17:37):
So it's some things you got to look out for.
Speaker 1 (17:42):
And I mean, I'm not a GM yet, so I
don't know what direction you go in.
Speaker 2 (17:47):
I'm still just starting the job.
Speaker 1 (17:50):
So but I know Tim Connelly over there is going
to have his hands full and he's going to do
a great job as he's done so far in building
this Minnesota Timberwards roster.
Speaker 3 (18:00):
I think the biggest thing for them too is they
they're lucky that they got at because people want to
go and play with ant and so we'll see what
you know this summer. They were talking about in the
offseason when superstars are calling up for help. But I
do think that the Timberwolves are a destination that players
want to go. Oh, I can put them over the top.
Let's go and see what we can do together. But
(18:21):
you know, honestly, the Spurs, we were not shocked. It's
been our this show's pick to to go and win
it all. I think I'm even more so, Like, yes,
I picked them to win it all, but I didn't
think they were this good. Like truly, their their guards
from their rookies to their vets, are are some of
the best guards. And they had the best big man
in the game right now in my opinion. And so
(18:44):
let's let's preview what this OKAC Spurs series is about
to be. Because the Thunder they had they only want
lost one game so far. But this is a real team.
I think that. You know, they are the returning champs.
What do we what can we expect from the Spurs
Okay series? Who's gonna win this thing? I guess in general,
but like what are gonna be the keys to it?
Speaker 1 (19:06):
First off, you see why I got the Sonics hat
on because we should be in Seattle in the conference finals.
But it's all good. But it's all good. Shout out
to the Thunder. But I'm always rep my Sonics the
Spurs man. They're rolling right now, but they've been rolling
since the All Star break. Really, to be honest, they're
clicking on all cylinders. Like we said, before. I think
(19:27):
the biggest thing with these two teams is they all
like each other. You could just see it like that's
why it's gonna be a high level series. These teams
really like going to battle with each other. They play
for each other, not just with each other. They're cut
from the same cloth. So this is gonna be a battle.
This isn't gonna be something like we've seen in the
(19:49):
season where the Spurs just man handled the Thunder. The
Thunder are well coach, organization's gonna be gonna make their adjustments.
I'm not saying they're gonna beat the Spurs. I got
the Spurs winning this series and winning the finals. But
it's not gonna be easy because the Thunder have been
through this before the Spurs haven't. But I said before,
(20:09):
sometimes the inexperience is a plus for you because you
don't know what to expect and you're going out there
like we got nothing to lose, and then when you
got a guy like Wemby, who no team in the league, has,
no team in the world, has a winby. The Spurs
have enough guys to slow SGA down, though not saying
they will. They have enough guards and they have enough
(20:31):
wings to be able to make him work every possession.
Speaker 2 (20:36):
And yes, the two time MVP is gonna do his thing.
Speaker 1 (20:38):
He's gonna have MVP caliber Knights, but they have enough
weapons to slow him down and make things tough. And
that's the scary part because it's Jayalen Williams back.
Speaker 3 (20:49):
Yeah, Jayleen Williams back. Well he I don't know if
he's officially back, but I know he's been upgraded.
Speaker 1 (20:55):
And that's gonna and that's still gonna be tough, like
you coming off a hamstring injury against a really physical
and young, defensive minded team. Like, so they're gonna test
if he can stop and go. They're gonna test if
he can move his feet, and they're gonna test if
if he can, you know, if he can slide his
puppies on defense. So like not to throw the thunder
(21:17):
under the bus in terms of all they're not the favorite. Yeah,
they're the favorite just because they're the defending champions. But
the Spurs are special, man, and they're clicking on all cylinders.
Speaker 2 (21:26):
And you gotta give a big shout out.
Speaker 1 (21:28):
To Miss Johnson and that coaching staff, Like they're not
afraid of anybody. They're going in there like they're the
favorite and and they're they're they're they're trying to you know,
take the throne from the thunder.
Speaker 3 (21:39):
Yeah, I think, uh, you said it right there, and
I think that you know, the ok see, almost just
having this easy road in the beginning of this series
is actually gonna hurt them, you know, like they haven't
seen the challenges that uh the Spurs are about to bring. Obviously,
they know what it was like playing in the regular
season where they didn't like I think, uh, the Spurs
(22:01):
took the regular season series. And so that's what's gonna
be exciting is it's I think it'll come down to
it like a chess a chess like it's those adjustments.
It's gonna be like who's the better coach because the
talent is all there. They have the dominant player, each
team is a dominant player, and then they have this
roster full of someone who can drop thirty that you
weren't have been thinking about, you know, like we saw
in the Lakers where they shut down SGA probably the
(22:24):
best that anyone has in this series or in the
playoffs so far. But then you had an aj Mitchell.
You had a career, so you had so but the
Spurs same thing.
Speaker 1 (22:32):
Yeah, but yeah, that's why I'm saying the Spurs, you
shut down Winby. They got cast, so they got Fox,
they got that, so they got they got like they're
the same team in most ways, and that's why it's
going to be such a good series. And I wouldn't
be surprised, Like.
Speaker 2 (22:48):
Like, the Thunders home court advantage is real. They got
a really good home court.
Speaker 1 (22:52):
So if they go up to OH, I don't want
the world to just be like, oh, the series is over. No,
they just handled their business like I wouldn't be surprised
if they do go up to oh just because the
playoff experience, just because the home court advantage that they
do have. And then it as she had coming off MVP,
like he's swag surfing right now. He's up there. He's
(23:14):
up there feeling feeling like like he should. So like,
I'm excited about this series and I hope it CJ.
Speaker 2 (23:23):
I hope it goes seven.
Speaker 1 (23:24):
Bro, Like the basketball hands needed that, the fans needed,
the world needs it.
Speaker 2 (23:28):
We don't need no short series.
Speaker 1 (23:30):
We need to prolong this as long as we can
because we know what it's like when basketball season isn't in.
Speaker 2 (23:35):
It's tough.
Speaker 3 (23:37):
I'm not even thinking about it right now. I'm already like,
what's Summer League and all that. But anyway, how much
do you think do you think that there's any advantage
in the Spurs also having just the story franchise and
some of these legends who I started spotting some uh
like David Robinson, Tim don't care. All those guys I
think David Elliott like those guys are hanging out around there.
You think they're getting in the locker room and parting
(23:57):
their wisdom.
Speaker 1 (23:58):
To the to the squad, no doubt, and the young
squad is all ears. There's no ego over there. You
got Gerenobili probably coming back, Tony Parker, all those guys.
Man just giving the guys game and giving them game
on understanding this opportunity that they have. Because if the
Spurs win it this year, Bro, They're gonna run off
(24:20):
the next few problems. It's gonna be so hard to
beat these guys. If they get one under their belt
this early, it's gonna be scary for the NBA unless
another win.
Speaker 2 (24:30):
Bey's out there well, and.
Speaker 3 (24:32):
What I'm scared of is that the Spurs do win
it and the Thunder are feeling like underdogs again, and
we just know what capital they have to work with
of all these picks and whatnot. Who knows.
Speaker 2 (24:42):
It's so much stuff I was hearing.
Speaker 1 (24:43):
Look, I'm one of the sources now, so so much
stuff I was hearing over the week. I can't even
say that the Thunder. It would be crazy if the
Thunder lose, and what they're capable of doing and who
they're capable of possibly getting is insane.
Speaker 3 (24:58):
We've talked about it. They are a dark horse and
you know, but they are a dark horse for a
Yannis truly. This is what Sam you said. This is
what we cannot be shocked. We were shocked when Katie
went to the Warriors. But this is what great front
offices do is they play the long game and they've
got They built this franchise to win one. And then
(25:20):
the league was like, all right, well then we need
to get when but y'a'm a bunch of help and whatever.
But this is what happens when you do this to
a team, They react and go off and get someone
crazy 's.
Speaker 1 (25:31):
You have it when you have a great organization, like
you said, so it's scary both ways. When it it's scary. Yeah,
they lose it, you know, teams got to get better.
Speaker 3 (25:41):
Yeah, okay, Well, so obviously a lot of fans think
that that this is the NBA Finals, it's the Western
Commerce Finals, but no shade to the East. We had
a Cavs Piston series go to seven. It was a
weird one though. It was sort of underwhelming to me
where I'm like, I'm still mad. Honestly, was kind of
upset with both teams. Where was like, why you guys,
let you know you went to seven in the previous series,
(26:03):
Like you're better than that. And they faced off and
I thought, you know, the Pistons went up two to
oh was it? Were you surprised at all seeing you know,
the Cavs sort of come back and win this and seven,
and like, what do you think the Calves expectations are
in the next series against the Knicks.
Speaker 1 (26:20):
I had the Calves winning this though, so I'm not
surprised at all how the games went.
Speaker 2 (26:24):
I was surprised.
Speaker 1 (26:25):
So after Game six when Detroit won in Cleveland, I
thought Detroit was gonna win the series. I thought they
were going to go back home and take take advantage
of having Game seven at home, and it was a
disappointing show for that group. But this is the things
I was scared about throughout the season that I was
worried about. They would catch up to them and hunt
them in the playoffs. Is not enough spacing and shooting,
(26:48):
not enough scoring on offense, and Cade Cunningham not having
enough help. That was the things I was scared of
all year long, like to where, yeah, they'd be a
great regular season team, they'll win sixty wins, they'll win
sixty games, They'll probably do that the next two or
three years, but if they don't make adjustments and getting
kaid help and allowing him to get spaced, so having
(27:11):
more shooting on the floor, having another point guard that
can allow k to be off the ball and make
things easier for him. And also Jalen Duran, you got
to play a little better. You're an All Star. There's expectations,
there's responsibilities and having that all star level label. But
that was also a thing I was scared about as well,
(27:33):
because he's never been in this position. He's never been
in this situation where where it's needed for him to
get fifteen and ten, eighteen and twelve, those type of numbers.
In the playoffs where it gets a lot difficult. The
game slows down, the games in the half court, they
take away your first and second and third option, so
what do you have next? So that's always hard, and
(27:55):
that's what those things. I was scared of for the
Detroit Pistons going into the playoffs. So but the Cleveland Cavaliers, like,
they didn't play great, but they played good enough to
win the series. And I'm nervous about them going seven
games both series and not having enough. But I'm picking
(28:18):
the Cavs over the Knicks, even though the Knicks are
rolling right now. The Eastern Conference Finals in New York
is gonna be bananas, is gonna be crazy. If if
the Knicks make it to the finals, it's amazing for
the NBA and.
Speaker 2 (28:32):
For the basketball world.
Speaker 1 (28:34):
So the basketball fan in me wants the Knicks to
go all the way because it would be cracking to
see the finals in New York. But I just I
don't know that they've been rolling the Knicks all playoffs long,
other than the first two games against Atlanta. But I'm
just not rolling for some reason. I don't know why.
I think the up and downs of the season, I don't.
Speaker 2 (28:55):
I don't know. I don't know, CJ.
Speaker 3 (28:58):
It's like, we've gotten excited about this Knicks team several
times and they've come up short when they've played the Pacers.
Last year, they're like they were the clear favorite and
they didn't show up. We experienced when we got excited
about them earlier this season, they went on like a
losing streak. Inside. Man, It's it's interesting because I also
can't I almost can't imagine them in the finals either,
(29:20):
but also the Calves, they're both kind of similar and
that they have so much potential on paper, but in
this in these playoffs, we've seen them not play their potential,
like just learning the fact that they should run the
offense through cat a little bit like, how do you
just know that? Now? Luckily they learned it before the
conference finals they run it, but what else are you
guys forgetting? You know? And and the Calves too, all
(29:43):
of a sudden, Mobili and Jared Allen just learned how
to play like big men, and the Mobley's been a
big factor on offense, and so like, honestly, we can
make our predictions, but who's showing up of these teams
in this conference finals?
Speaker 1 (29:56):
That's what I'm saying. The most consistent team that shows
up is gonna win. And these two teams have been
inconsistent throughout the season in terms of when they're playing
really well.
Speaker 2 (30:07):
They're one of the top teams in the league.
Speaker 1 (30:09):
When we don't see that team, we don't know where
they are in the league. So I think it's gonna
be an exciting matchup. You know, I got hopefully James
Harden is ready to you know, do his thing. I
know Donovan Mitchell is gonna be ready. But I think
the key factor is going to be having games like
Mobiley had last game, Jared Allen, sam Merril. They're gonna
(30:33):
need guys like that to step up to be able
to win. But I do got the Cavs beating the
Knicks in the conference finals.
Speaker 3 (30:41):
All right, Well, I'm just happy we're here, man. These
are these are some incredible matchups. I'm just excited. Like
like you said, May, let's go seven, that's all we ask.
Let's prolong it and we'll see who gets to the
finals here. But these are great matchups, and we've been
talking about all seasons, so it's great to see all
these teams face each other in the conference finals. We're
(31:01):
gonna take a break here on point game. We come back,
we're gonna do a little quiz. We're gonna do a
little quiz on your playoff experience. Obviously you were there,
but we're gonna see how much you remember. So we're
gonna play the IT playoff quiz when we come back
here on point game. All right, now that we know
(31:23):
which teams are in the conference finals, let's talk finals
MVP odds. Right now, we got SJ is a minus
one fifty, Wemby is plus three to fifty, and Brunson
is plus seven hundred and Donovan is plus twenty eight
hundred to win Finals MVP in the DraftKings Sportsbook app.
So let's say, okay, see does not win the title
this year, it t who are you picking for Finals MVP? Wemby,
(31:46):
Brunson or Donovan Mitchell? And why.
Speaker 2 (31:50):
I'm gonna go with Wemby.
Speaker 1 (31:51):
I know that's the easy, the easy one, but he
just impacts winning in so many ways others don't. And
if the Spurs do win it, you gotta go with,
you know, the most impactful player. That's what the MVP
is about, and I think he will lead that group
for sure.
Speaker 3 (32:06):

Six questions for you. Do you think you can go
six or six?
Speaker 2 (33:49):
We're going to see.
Speaker 3 (33:51):
Here's a question. How many playoff games have you personally
played against Lebron?
Speaker 2 (33:57):
How many playoff games me personally? Six?
Speaker 3 (34:06):
Six is right?
Speaker 2 (34:07):
Ye?
Speaker 3 (34:08):
Games in the fourteen to fifteen series, and then two in.
Speaker 2 (34:10):
The two and then I heard, yeah.
Speaker 3 (34:13):
All right, here's one when you drop fifty three in
the playoffs. In twenty seventeen, you were one point shy
of tying the all time Celtics record for most points
in a postseason game. Which player has that record for
points scored in a single postseason game?
Speaker 2 (34:28):
Which player is it? Jason Tatum? No oh, hold on,
hold no, no, no, no, no, no, let me get one more.
I mean Larry Bird.
Speaker 3 (34:38):
Good guest seventy three, nineteen seventy three, John Howise.
Speaker 1 (34:41):
Saying, ah, John Havelchack Hale, Chack steals the ball, bad,
my bad sea game.
Speaker 2 (34:47):
You're good?
Speaker 3 (34:48):
Okay, Oh you gotta know this one. Which playoff series
did you average over thirty points per game?
Speaker 2 (34:53):
Over thirty piece? Was it the Wizards?
Speaker 3 (34:58):
Yep?
Speaker 2 (34:59):
Yeah piece twenty seventeen.
Speaker 3 (35:02):
That's right, all right? In that same series? Who exploded
in game seven? And how many points did he have?
A team?
Speaker 1 (35:09):
Indiears Kelly Olinic tho olnic clinic? Did he have twenty
eight closed twenty ah day, Yeah, I'm hot at myself
because that that was like the Sam muro game.
Speaker 2 (35:28):
Dang bro, my bad. Kelly.
Speaker 3 (35:30):
Shout out to Kelly. He's he's on the spurs.
Speaker 2 (35:32):
On the spurs. Ko Will be shout out. That's my guy.
He came to my wedding. Man, that's one of my
good friends.
Speaker 3 (35:38):
That's dope.
Speaker 2 (35:39):
Dang, I missed too, Bro.
Speaker 3 (35:40):
It's about having a you know above above fifty is
good in basketball.
Speaker 2 (35:45):
Nah, bro?
Speaker 3 (35:47):
All right? How many points did you score in your
first ever playoff game?
Speaker 2 (35:50):
Twenty give yourself was twenty?
Speaker 3 (35:53):
I thought it was two, twenty two?
Speaker 1 (35:56):
Oh, twenty two, ten and five? I think I had Yeah, yeah, dang,
I had. I thought I had a dub my bad
twenty two. I probably snack a little layup in at
the end. Ah man, I'm over here. I'm so upset
up myself. This is crazy.
Speaker 3 (36:12):
All right. And finally it you've always been an elite passer.
What's your record for assists in a playoff game?
Speaker 2 (36:18):
I'm against the Wizards. I think I might have had thirteen.
Speaker 3 (36:20):
Twelve, twelve, twelve, We'll give it to you.
Speaker 2 (36:23):
Was it against the Wizards? I think the max it
was game seven? Yeah, yeah, I look double double game seven.
All right.
Speaker 3 (36:30):
We love talking sneakers on this podcast, so it we've
talked about the greatest Nike basketball shoe. A lot of
conversation there that that ignited on social it. Let's play
a little game We're calling desert Island Kicks. So you
end up deserting on an island, you get three pairs
of shoes to rock for the rest of your life
on that island. What are you picking?
Speaker 1 (36:51):
And why dang you didn't prep me for this. I'm
gonna go with an air Max one because that's my favorite.
You could wear that with anything. You can go hiking,
you can look cool with some jeans that can go
with anything. I'm gonna go with the air Max one.
This is the only have three shoes the rest of
(37:12):
my life.
Speaker 3 (37:13):
Yeah, and I'm gonna say you can hoop on this island.
Speaker 2 (37:16):
Too, so it's cool. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (37:17):
I got the air Max one, okay, Jordan four, it
don't matter which ones. It could be black Cats, it
could be the Cements. And then I got the Kobe fours.
So I got some air Maxes that I can wear
with sweats and all that. I can do whatever I
(37:40):
need to do in those I got if I got
a nice night out someday.
Speaker 2 (37:44):
I got the Jordan ones on so they can go
with anything.
Speaker 1 (37:48):
Then I got some Kobe's in case wherever I'm at
in the world, somebody wants some one on one action.
I can put on some Kobe's and you know, do
my thing. So those are probably the three.
Speaker 3 (38:00):
And if you pick, if you pick a certain color
way of that Kobe for is, those could be casual.
Speaker 1 (38:03):
Too, exactly, so exactly exactly, so those are my three.
Speaker 3 (38:10):
All right, all right? I would say, yeah, my, my,
what are yours?
Speaker 2 (38:15):
C J what are your I.
Speaker 3 (38:17):
Was hoping you'd ask the Airmax one for sure? For sure?
To me, that is like an air Force one with more.
Speaker 2 (38:23):
Cushion, exactly exactly.
Speaker 3 (38:27):
Man. I would then say, I think maybe a Jordan ten.
And this is what we were talking about, the one,
the thing that went viral. People are like, oh, you
can't hoop in and retro Jordan's, uh, because we're not
comfortable to Jordan tans. That to me are probably the
most comfortable Jordana.
Speaker 2 (38:44):
I can hoop into Jordan tans right now.
Speaker 1 (38:46):
Yeah, the only thing about the Jordan tans, if you
wear them too much, they're going to have a squeak.
The squeak in them like where they like the they
have like all my Jordan tans have like when I
when I walk in if I wore them too much,
like a noise in it is. I don't know if
that's happened to you. It might just be my teens,
but I could definitely hoop in some teens.
Speaker 3 (39:07):
Yeah, no, that that's happened to me. And then man,
the third one.
Speaker 2 (39:12):
In our live show you had the teens on. You know,
I remember it.
Speaker 3 (39:16):
Deals you appreciate that, okay, And the third one, Man,
this is honestly, this isn't I'm torn between the Vmero fives,
which are like a newer classic to.
Speaker 2 (39:31):
Me, Oh, those are so comfortable wear for the rest of.
Speaker 1 (39:35):
My life, the rest of my life, the rest of
my life every day, Like they got to come out
with way more color waves though, like help the people out.
Those are so comfortable brouh.
Speaker 3 (39:46):
But I was torn. I was like, do I need
a more updated hoopshoot? And to me that might be.
Speaker 2 (39:53):
A Lebron.
Speaker 3 (39:57):
I liked the Lebron fift teams a lot. Seem like the.
Speaker 1 (40:02):
Sock Okay, yeah, I can see where you're going there.
Those are some good Those aren't bad selections coming from
a sneaker head.
Speaker 3 (40:10):
Bro Okay, all right, all right, let's end this show.
How like how we always ended, our selections are getting
down to because only a few teams are left playing
in the playoffs right now, So no days off. I
t let's let's show some love to some players who
are doing out there and deserve the attention from the
basketball media and basketball fan world.
Speaker 1 (40:29):
So are no days off this week is going to
We're gonna do two people shout out to the Game
seven winners of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Evan Mobley did his
thing when everybody was saying he needed to step up,
he stepped up the most important time. And then Sam
Mrro game sevens are hard, not only a game seven,
(40:50):
Game seven on the rod when you're a role player
as well. Yep, he Evan Mobley, which is you know,
obviously an All Star.
Speaker 2 (40:59):
Those guys won that game for them, So.
Speaker 1 (41:02):
We got to give a shout out to those because
nobody's gonna be talking about them. So on our pot
point game, we always gonna talk about who they ain't
talking about.
Speaker 2 (41:10):
So shout out to those two guys.
Speaker 1 (41:12):
No days off winners, good luck moving forward in the
next round.
Speaker 3 (41:17):
Yeah, we'll see. Like you said, man, I just want
to keep saying it because the scouting report is on
these star players. Sometimes it's the players you're not thinking about,
and they stepped up. And man, if they continue the
way they've been playing, like you said, the Cavs over
the next come so we'll see how that plays out.
Speaker 2 (41:35):
Yes, sir, all right.
Speaker 3 (41:37):
Before we end it, well it any parting words you
got the new gig. There's a lot of basketball happening
in your life. You're coaching, we're watching these playoffs. Any
parting words to our fans A point.
Speaker 1 (41:48):
Game, nah, we just gotta stay connected with the fans.
Man that the interactions on our pulst have been amazing lately.
I'm gonna chime in on some comments here and there.
If you're a hater, I'm say something back as well.
But continue to show love to the pod. We really
appreciate it. And you know, CJ shout out to you
always making things easy for me and you know, let's
(42:11):
keep this going of course.
Speaker 3 (42:12):
Man, appreciate you guys all for listening and watching. See
you guys next time here on point Jam
