Speaker 1 (00:01):
Guaranteed human. A friend of mine, she's a nutritionist, so
I tried to run things buy her every once in
a while. She gave me the go ahead on the creatine.
She said that's oh, it's great for you. Yeah. She
was like, oh yeah, yeah. Even more evidence is coming
out about that now they're talking about it helping to
stop cell division, which is really big. Yes. Wow, so

(00:24):
in terms of cancer. So now that it's a preventative
or it doesn't cure anything, but it's more of a prevention,
is it still like the one scoop is enough? Uh? Yeah,
I'm doing ten milligrams. She said that was good. Most
people they say five is like the baseline. Yeah, you
can tolerate a lot more than that. But I do
it for the brain. You know, everything for me is brain.

(00:45):
I don't want to go through what I saw my
dad go through and I'm terrified of it. So I
do it for the brain and to get swollen. Yeah,
but it's one A, one B.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
They say, you're actually in terms of cognitive you're supposed
to hang brain and whatever.

Speaker 1 (01:02):
Thing I've been doing every years. Brandy Bellman and the
DV Morning Show. You know, I had a nice week off,
and I was up in the lake and hanging with
my family and stuff, and I went out to dinner
at this place where it was a new restaurant and
there went to meet some friends and I got there early,
and I go to the bar and I'm sitting at
the bar and the bartender is annoyed. Okay, come to

(01:25):
find out he's the owner, and yeah, he's working really hard.
Because somebody comes up and goes, oh, we just wanted
to come up and say hi, and you're doing so well.
And we were telling everybody at the Sebenberger Club today
that they should come down here because your food is
so good and everything, and we're just so proud of you, Johnny.
And he's like miserable and he's like, I'm the only
one doing any work around here right now. I swore
to god. He's like, I just made forty gallons of sauce.

(01:48):
Forty gallons. I'm just it's just it's a lot. It's
a lot. And they're just trying to compliment him, and
he's being miserable to them, like they're being nice. This
guy's being miserable. So then finally he gets around to
like he looks at me he's like, what can I
get you? And I went, I'll have forty one gallons
of sauce, and he goes, do you think you can

(02:10):
afford that? I'm like, I bet I could. I bet
I could afford forty one And then I go, oh, neat,
I would like that. Neat And he's like yeah, yeah right,
He's like you you love to know how much that costs?
I'm like, how much could it cost? Yeah? Don't get
weird about the money. So, like, I start arguing with
this guy about how much sauce costs at his somewhat

(02:33):
upscale bar, and my friends come in and they're like, a, right, hey,
we got a table. I'm like, hold on, I'm doing something.
Okay at the most, like what four hundred dollars, I'm like,
I have it? I do I have it. He was
so pissed at me, and the other people laughed. You know,

(02:53):
I was trying to make light because I thought he
was being like douchey to people who were being nice
to him, and so I just kind of dryly said that,
you know, and oh, yeah, you think that's funny. I actually, yeah,
it got a laugh in the room. Everybody else, those
guys thought it was funny. We're just kidding around. We're
here to have fun tonight. You couldn't. Yeah, you wouldn't
liked to know how much that costs. Huh, couldn't afford it,

(03:14):
couldn't afford my sauce? Yeah, why am I here? But
it was another one of those situations where and actually
was it ended up being a lovely place full of
lovely people. But they did something at this place that
I know has been a big topic for diners, particularly

(03:34):
in the summertime. The musical accompaniment. Okay, when you go
to a restaurant and someone is playing, or you go
to a bar and someone is playing, there's an expectation.
The expectation that I have is that the music the musicians,
and I am one on the side of book. Musicians

(03:57):
have bands do that stuff. Now the band, the expectation
of the band is to not play so loud that
the people who are there can't have a conversation. You can't.
It's not a concert for you, right, It's you're the background,
and you know, we'll kind of look over and pay

(04:18):
attention and golf clap it every once in a while
and stuff like that. If it's a bar, maybe it's
a little rowdier. Maybe you're on a like a Sunday
fun day in one of the like carms. Sometimes people
will get rowdy down there. That's cool, that's a different
vibe too. But when you're eating dinner and they're banging
you for like thirty bucks a plate, and there's a
three piece band of dudes singing super loud and like

(04:40):
playing their instruments really really loud, and you can't talk
to the people next to you the entire dinner. It
drives me crazy. And all they would need to do
is turn down, Like the music is fine, the music
is great, the band's amazing, Just turn it down. What
were they playing? They played cool tunes, you know, they're
playing like John Prine songs and stuff like that. And

(05:00):
they had a mandolin, a guitar player, a stand up
bas I'm like, oh, this would be cool. But then
it was just like, yeah, it doesn't have to be
that loud, just based on those instruments, right. And so
I've seen this conversation on TikTok and on reels where
people are like wondering, well, what the hell I'm in
a bar. I just want to talk to my buddies.
And there's some dude and a lot of times what

(05:21):
happens to when people first start playing like an acoustic
guitar and they buy a PA, they don't really know
how to mix it for the room and it's like
really shrill and things like that, and that happens, and
then there's the defense of the musicians who say like, Hey, no,
he's hired to do a job and that's what he's doing,
versus the people who are sitting at the bar going
I just want to be able to talk to my buddies, though,

(05:42):
And I think that this is like as easily fixable
as when you're in a bar and you say something like, hey,
the Pirates game ended four hours ago and you still
have it on that channel and they're just showing there
are other games on. Can you change the channel to
the hockey game? And then someone's like, uh, yeah, I'll
get the manager to me. How did it go that

(06:03):
long without anybody noticing it? Number one? Number two? Why
doesn't everyone know how to just go like? That should
be something. I think it should be more important. Also,
turn down the music. Those are the two things.

Speaker 3 (06:14):
Yeah, that's it.

Speaker 1 (06:15):
I think those are you know, I'm coming back griping.
There's you know, they're they're Yeah, I couldn't hear anything.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
The guy said, I was poor. You can't afford you. You
can't afford it, gallas would he look at you?

Speaker 1 (06:29):
Well, sound like a little like insult, like you can't
afford this sauce? Well, I think it's just like all right,
so he he sells it, right, So I think it's
like I would imagine. It's like, all right, let's say
twelve dollars a jar, right, so how many sixteen ounce
jars are in a gallon? I'm bad with volume eight? Okay,
so eight. So if he has forty, that's three hundred

(06:51):
and twenty of them. Okay, it is a lot, but
I get all right, I could afford it. You can't
afford it, And yeah, I'm gonna use credit. Yeah, I
mean what thirty six grand or something or three six
hundred I'll be paying it off.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
Yeah you couldn't afford it. Oh yes, you don't think
I can afford it? You just pull out the credit card.
I wanted it all Now I have to have it.
It'll go nicely with my mustard. Well, let me tell
you about the mustard I did. The first unfreezing.

Speaker 1 (07:20):
Okay, this week because for those who don't remember, I
bought four gallons of my favorite mustard because they went
out of production. They stopped making it, and I just
went online to see what I could order, and some
restaurant depot had four gallons of it. So I thought
I was buying one gallon. I about four, So I
defrosted the first one. It's fine. You didn't have to

(07:42):
restir it or anything delicious. It's fine, no, no, it
little shake it up. It was totally fun. Feeling pretty
good about that purchase. Now, yeah, now, who's the idiot?
It's right, that's right. You don't think I can afford
the sauce. You should see how I work with mustard.
They all laughed at me. They said, it's a fool.
Here's what I'm wondering the what's the diarrhea called the

(08:04):
sisters glowsporiasis? I mean, what are the chances that that
gets into tomatoes? I mean tomatoes, let's see, are easily washable?

Speaker 3 (08:19):
Right?

Speaker 1 (08:19):
You can't wash it off? No, you cannot. I'm telling
you right now. You can't wash this off. You can't
wash it off with vinegar. You can't wash it off
with water. You have to cook it. It will not
wash off if you don't. If you think like washing
your tomatoes is gonna work, you're gonna be sitting at
your desk at work and just all of a sudden,

(08:41):
well wash that explosive diarrhea. The sauce would have been
fine because you can cook it. Yeah, that's true. So
pizza is okay, yeah, thank god, thank God. So right there,
But you have to cook your vegetables. And you can't
eat any fruit for while. I mean you can Christian fruit.

(09:03):
Cook the fruit. What's the good cooked fruit? There are none? Apple.
I just had a broke. That would have been so bad.
It would have got mean so much harp apple. Yeah,
like a pie? Sure, yeah, bake it in a pie.
All your fruit needs to go into a pie. All right,
nothing but pies, Nothing but pies. You couldn't afford it.
You can't can't pies. Broke guy?

Speaker 2 (09:27):
What what a I guess he is going through.

Speaker 1 (09:30):
It is what it. But I heard from other people
that are like, oh, that guy's the worst. And I
just didn't understand why he was bitching and complaining to customers.
And it was like a nice vibe, you know what.
I mean like like usually the owners kind of like, hey,
oh welcome, Well, yeah, we're working hard. Oh it's good
to see you. He's just like, this sucks. I'm doing
my job and I'm upset about it. It's like, yeah, no,

(09:52):
you have to make forty gallons of sauce. You own, alright?
You like he furious at me, like red face? You
think I honestly, I thought he was gonna laugh. You
don't even know how thin the margins are here. I mean,
it's tight, damn you bowman. He just hops over the

(10:19):
bar and just starts beating me to a for ever.
You're getting pummeled. You're like, and the music's too long too.
The guy comes over with his mandolin and just starts
with it. I respect you place. I support. It's just

(10:44):
too bad.

Speaker 4 (10:46):
And then of course it all ends with me on
the floor explosive diarrhea from sistos I spoor iosis, my khakis. No,
I had one pair of shorts.

Speaker 1 (11:01):
I had one pair of shorts and three shirts for
ten days.

Speaker 2 (11:04):
Awesome, isn't it sort of liberating?

Speaker 1 (11:06):
Though? It's the best.

Speaker 2 (11:07):
I just when you don't have any you're not paralyzed
by choice.

Speaker 1 (11:11):
Yeah yeah, But also you kind of feel like an idiot,
Like after you've worn it all twice, You're like, I
kind of feel like an idiot. Think about buying another
pair of shorts. No, I wasn't going that far. I
mean I did have a pair. I had, like a
pair of workout shorts that I worked at the gym.

Speaker 2 (11:26):
But it's good to have easy access, do you know what?

Speaker 1 (11:32):
This is why I wish I would have had another
pair of shorts. So I was going to see where
Al Yankovic because he was playing up there, and highest
recommendation to everybody here in Pittsburgh to go see the
Weird Al Yankovic show. It was so entertaining and I've
seen him before, this was the best I've ever seen him,
and it was quite possibly the greatest encore I have

(11:55):
ever seen. The musicality is through the roof and if
you like I think Weird Al is unbelievably funny, this
show will make you laugh your ass off. And don't
miss Puddles the clown Puddles Pity Party as the opener,
because that is hilariously unique as well. But I call
an uver. It comes and picks me up. And as
I opened the door, I noticed there's like a stain

(12:17):
on the seat. It's a lift. You know, when you
see a stain, You're like that staine's been there forever,
you know, because a lot of these cars are just
kind of nasty, you know. And so I just, for
some reason take for granted that stain has been there
for a while. And I sat down in the As
I sat, I hey, this stain back here has been
here for a while. I'm guessing. He goes, what and

(12:39):
I'm like, oh no, And then I reach underneath soaking
wi and it's I mean, it's it's like, you know,
yeah big, I'm you know, it's like three inches circumference,
and I'm like, what did I just sit in? He goes, oh, man,
a woman had a baby back there. No, And I'm

(13:00):
I'm like, did I just sit in? Baby? P And
he goes, I don't know. She had a bottle. It
could be a bottle. And I'm like, why did you
look back here? He's like, well, you just sat on it.
And I'm like, well, because I beat, you wouldn't let
me sit in pee, so I'll leave one pair of shorts.
I'm like, you gotta wait here. And I had to
go inside and I washed off my shorts and took

(13:21):
a hair dryer and I was like what He like,
did the quick dry? I'm like, don't leave and I
got it and then so then I got out there.
I'm like, I can't believe this. And you go, sir,
if you would like to take another car. I'm like, no,
I need to get in your car. I'm late for
the show now. And he's like, well, you can't. You know,
if you're all angry, you can't. I can't help it.
I'm like, look, man, I'm not angry at you. I'm

(13:43):
angry at the system. Mangrate the pee, the system that
makes you drive so fast one fare to another that
you don't check for baby pa in the back, or
the people are so grossly let their baby p.

Speaker 2 (13:57):
When you said a woman had a baby back there,
I was like, like, labor.

Speaker 1 (14:01):
That's what I thought too. He's like, I thought you
got it out of cleat. I heard have been a
one hopper. The paramedic caught the baby of a of
a one hop He's like, I was just going on
the road. I heard a few moans and then baby baby. Anyways,

(14:25):
weird ole's are not for a half hour you'll be fine.
He's like some guy had sauce back there. Weird Al's awesome. August.
First go seeing that show at Star Lake, you will
laugh so hard. First of all, the smartest thing he
did is he hired more musicians for his band that

(14:47):
are young, and there's like these I'm actually like just
smoking hot beautiful girls who are incredible musicians, and they
dance and jump around and they're badass play and they
sing like birds. So he has like eight part harmonies
going and it gives the stage so much energy because
they're you know, Weird Alan his original band, they're older fellas.

(15:09):
And now it's like the stage is popping and all
of the video edits that he does in between the
songs when he does costume changes are just fall down funny,
Like it's really fun. The entire show. You are entertained NonStop.
And he does probably ten eleven costume changes maybe more. Wow,
that's a killer. When he gets like fat, does he

(15:32):
have to change his face too? Does he wear like
a face post. Yeah, he puts on the fat suit
and then they like glue a thing under his under
his chin like that, And we were wondering. We were
like because when you walk into a weird Ause show.
The great thing about it is there is a weird
alfan archetype, you know, like they all look like weird

(15:53):
Elf fans, And I mean that is the compliment. We
can picture it. It's a comic book guy, you know
what I mean. Because he's so you know, he's been
round so long. People are taking their kids, and the
kids are so into it, like way into it, and
they're they're like costuming for it, and like some of
them were dressed up in Star Wars stuff or like
you know that uh my my, uh this here Anakin

(16:16):
guy that you know, Luke Cower or Darth Vader song
and you're just like walking into this vibe of everybody
is waiting to have so much fun that I don't know,
it's it's hard to not enjoy yourself the entire time.

Speaker 2 (16:34):
He was a monstrous deal. Like he released that album
in the nineties.

Speaker 1 (16:39):
That Amis Paradise. Yeah, Amish Paradise is on. He did that.
I really can't tell you how.

Speaker 2 (16:45):
I mean, that was a smash at the time, so
successful and like you know, got him a whole generation
of fans.

Speaker 1 (16:56):
Yeah, well he does a whole I mean he had
a bunch of new ones of songs like Party in
the USA and stuff like that, even much newer songs
than that, where I didn't know a couple of the
things you was spoofing. As a matter of fact, I
went to the bathroom and some guy like sidled up
next to me and he goes, but enjoy this a
lot more if I knew half the songs he was playing,
you know. And I was like, we don't talk it
to journal, all right, there's no talking it.

Speaker 3 (17:18):
To Arnel.

Speaker 1 (17:20):
Anyways. If you are on the fence of going, I'm
telling you right now you will go and have the
best time ever and your kids can enjoy it. And
it's weird. Now there's nobody like him. It's really funny,
all right. Sorry, I just yanked the wheel there. The
caffeine's working, Leslie's Sonny and hot today high ninety. Yeah.
Bucco's just who bass this weekend against the brew Crew.

(17:44):
And it's so bizarre to think that a year ago
at this time they were the worst offense in the league,
and now they're the best. Going into the All Star break,
Kevin Gorman talks about what's next for the Buckos after
the break and what we can expect from I want
to say Bob Nutting, but I'm not exactly sure that

(18:09):
they're going to be movers or shakers or sellers. I'm
not exactly sure.

Speaker 2 (18:13):
I think they're gonna be Stan Patters.

Speaker 1 (18:14):
Yeah, we'll see what Kevin thinks about that coming up
eight forty five And as we said earlier tonight, the
Pittsburgh Power Ballad Challenge Final will be recorded live to
tape and broadcast back to you Friday morning, and you'll
find out who this year's Pittsburgh Power Ballad Challenge winner is.
Radio on DV streaming on all your devices.

Speaker 4 (18:32):
No matter where I go, I always listen to.

Speaker 3 (18:34):
DV comedy, sports and the rock you grew up with
Dave Dve as a pre set. I'm a free iHeartRadio
app Live from the Don's Appliances Studios where Pittsburgh shops
for appliance.

Speaker 1 (18:47):
Is this Mike, What's going on? Sports is Up? Brought
to you by Bridgeville Appliance.

Speaker 5 (18:52):
We mentioned today that sweeps are pretty unlikely in Major
League Baseball these days. The Pirates getting a sweep of
the Brewers this weekend definitely qualifies. Brewers came in on
Fire Pirates were scuffling again after revealing their wards against
the Atlanta Braves, and nonetheless, the Bucks wind up with

(19:16):
their first sweep since April. The doubleheader Saturday is what
I'm talking about. Their first doubleheader sweep since April of
twenty twenty three, and their first at home since twenty
twenty one. That propelled them to a three game series
over the Bruce, which was unlikely. If you've been watching

(19:37):
the Pirates, you know there's ways that are probably gonna
win games and ways they're probably gonna lose games, and
this one was all three of these. Way outside the margins, yeah,
seven six. In the first game on Saturday, Bucks were
down six to three in the bottom of the seventh
and as Marilyn Valdez hits a grand slam that holds
up as the game winner, Brewers loaded the bases against

(19:59):
Gregory so Todo in the top of the ninth, a
walk and an air by Jared Triolo contributing to that dilemma,
and then Andrew Vaughan hits a grounder to third. Nick
Gonzalez steps on third and rather than throw across the
diamond for the force out at first, which would have
been an easy out throws home for a tag play. Fortunately,

(20:20):
Christian Yelich wasn't running, He was just kind of jogging
in the home.

Speaker 1 (20:24):
He thought it's going to force out at first anyways.

Speaker 5 (20:27):
Either that or he thought there was two outs and
the infield out would end it. I don't know what
he was thinking, but the old five to two double
play to end it in game one. Then in Game two,
the Pirates only get four and two thirds innings out
of Bubba Chandler. He threw ninety seven pitches in four
and two thirds innings. Everybody was going crazy because he

(20:48):
went over one hundred miles an hour a couple of times.
So what right, ninety seven pitches in four and two
third innings is not good enough?

Speaker 1 (20:57):
Agreed?

Speaker 5 (20:58):
But somehow the Pirates run five relievers at the Brewers
from there, and they combined for four and a third
innings of two hitch shutout ball. The Bucks hang on
and win that one three to two, and then yesterday
fourteen to five, another offensive eruption, but the guys doing
most of the erupting were Marcelo Ozuna, Jared Triolo, and

(21:18):
Henry Davis. Home runs for Davis and Ozuna good for Ozuna.
Like I said, perfect time, let's deal him. He's getting hot.
Give them to somebody else. Couldn't agree more. And uh,
I'm not sure about the eventual return. We know Connor
Griffin is out until at least September. So you put Cruz.
You think Cruz and Horwitz are getting close, right, I mean.

Speaker 1 (21:40):
It'd have to be Cruise especially, it would have to
be But I wouldn't mind seeing Cruz dh deal Ozuna,
keep Mangham in at center. And uh, it's a pretty
formidable lineup right there. Yeah.

Speaker 5 (21:52):
And the guy that's really, you know, changed the landscape
in terms of Ozuna being needed is Valdez, who went
against Milwaukee five for twelve, three homers, nine RBI in
three games. He's played twenty eight games for the Pirates,
one hundred and five played appearances, ninety four at bats.
He's got ten home runs in twenty seven RBI. And

(22:13):
he's not just pulling the ball. The Grand Slam was
the other way to right field. He seems to have
an idea of how to hit. Yeah, his approaches are good.

Speaker 1 (22:24):
I don't know.

Speaker 5 (22:24):
This guy might not be a flash in the pen.
He might just be a good player that they have
stumbled upon.

Speaker 1 (22:30):
We'll see.

Speaker 5 (22:30):
It's the All Star break now for the Buckos, and
they're in. They're still not in good shape in the
NL Central. They're nine and a half games behind Milwaukee
after sweeping the Brewers.

Speaker 1 (22:39):
They're not gonna make that up. I wish the All
Star Break would have happened last week so that we
had more World Cup soccer in between, because now only
we only have two games this week and they're both
at three o'clock Tuesday and Wednesday.

Speaker 5 (22:53):
Pirates are four excuse me, they're two back of Miami
for the third wild card, but there are only four
and a half games behind the Cubs.

Speaker 1 (23:02):
Who are the first wild card.

Speaker 5 (23:04):
There are eight teams, excuse me, seven teams within six
and a half games or fewer of the Cubs, and
there are still two spots to get after the Cubs.

Speaker 1 (23:16):
This is gonna be insane.

Speaker 5 (23:17):
Chicago, Philly, Miami, Saint Louis, Pittsburgh, Arizona, San Diego, Washington.
All those teams are playoff contenders.

Speaker 1 (23:24):
I think.

Speaker 5 (23:27):
Somebody is going to add somebody's gonna get hot, gonna
have to earn this one.

Speaker 1 (23:33):
I am still burned too much from the previous years
to think that they'll do it right. Either they wouldn't
sell enough. I get it. I think they won't buy enough.

Speaker 5 (23:44):
The standing Patters, I think is the most likely of
the three.

Speaker 1 (23:47):
Outcomes, and so tad things.

Speaker 5 (23:49):
I think they're unlikely to sell because they've invested too
much in it, and you know, unless they start the
second half and go one to nine or something like.

Speaker 1 (23:57):
That, standing pat is akin to give up to me though,
I would agree, but.

Speaker 2 (24:01):
The market, they're gonna have to like really overpay, right,
I mean, so many teams.

Speaker 1 (24:06):
Are still in it. That's the price of pork, you know.
I'm I mean, I'm into it.

Speaker 2 (24:10):
I would like I just feel like they're not gonna
which two weeks ago or even last week, I thought
there was a chance that they would deal low, which
would be yes, that would cause great anger to me.

Speaker 1 (24:26):
Oh yeah, so leading home run hitter on the team. Yeah,
but on a one year deal, yep. I mean they
should extend them as what they really should do, no question.
We've all seen this movie before, right, Yeah, of course
they should.

Speaker 5 (24:43):
Even you know, they haven't made the playoffs since twenty fifteen,
but there have been a couple of seasons where there
was some reason to talk yourself into optimism at the
All Star break.

Speaker 1 (24:53):
But I.

Speaker 5 (24:55):
The more I watch this team, the more I think
it can be better. But the more becoming convinced it
won't be. Why because he's I don't know that he's
starting pitchers. Ashcraft's been their best guy.

Speaker 1 (25:08):
Right.

Speaker 5 (25:09):
We got to as soon be approaching the point where
they stopped saying, well, he can't pitch anymore because he's
pitched way more innings than he pitched last year.

Speaker 1 (25:18):
Well, there is a kicking the can down the road
mentality that the team has. It's like the Jared Jones
thing last week.

Speaker 5 (25:23):
They're still treating Skeens with relative kid gloves. Yeah, Like,
he just pitched yesterday, Right, so he's not gonna pitch Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
or Thursday.

Speaker 1 (25:32):
They play again Friday.

Speaker 5 (25:33):
He should start the first game against Cleveland, and then
he's available to pitch against the Yankees, to.

Speaker 1 (25:39):
Pitch an inning on Tuesday. I don't think he's pitching
because he pitched yesterday.

Speaker 5 (25:43):
Oh, but I bet they don't start him Friday.

Speaker 1 (25:47):
I mean, do you see the picture of Skeens and
Livy Dunn and the private jet on the way to
the All Star Game. No, you know, she didn't have
her seatbelt on, and I didn't think that was very safe.

Speaker 5 (25:58):
And it's not just a pirates problem, but the way
pitchers are treated, and that's if the bullpen has any
chance to be better, they're gonna have to go get
some guys. But beyond that, they're gonna have to get
innings out of these starters. And I just don't know
that they have the starters that can do it, or
they're interested in doing that.

Speaker 1 (26:15):
Where did you land on how they treated Jared Jones
last week? It's ridiculous.

Speaker 5 (26:21):
I never for a second thought he was going to
complete a nine inning perfect game because I never thought
they'd let him throw that. But he should have gone
out for the seventh because that's one fewer reliever you
have to use if he pitches seventh. Yeah, and he
was dealing, Yeah, I mean, let him deal. You know,
there's times when a guy's just on and it was

(26:42):
one of those games that was a reliever that was
in the same boat, and they took him out and
went to Santana. I forget who it was, and Soto
went through the eighth inning eleven pitches and they took
him out and put Santana in. Santana gave up a
game losing home run.

Speaker 1 (27:00):
It is curious the way they're handling things. The way
they've been handling Majinski's alway has been a little crazy. Also,
oh god, that's getting ridiculous. Let's talk to Kevin Gormant
about it. Well, we'll do a break, we'll come back.
We'll talk with Kevin Gorman at the trib Abbe. You'll

the studio with me. Welcoming our friend from the trib
Bucks beat writer Kevin Gorman car me, good morning, how
are you, buddy.

Speaker 6 (27:50):
I'm doing good, recovering from covering a doubleheader in the
draft on the same day, which was just kind of
mind boggling, but a good weekend for the Buckos.

Speaker 1 (27:58):
A great weekend for the Buckos. Fifty forty seven at
the All Star Break, the most prolific offense in the
major leagues. Not something I saw coming this year. It
certainly has made it an entertaining season to this point,
but not exactly the mo I thought this team was
going to use to get to fifty and forty seven

(28:20):
at the All Star Break. No, not at all.

Speaker 6 (28:24):
I mean, everything was about the foundation being the starting pitching.

Speaker 1 (28:27):
Instead.

Speaker 6 (28:28):
You know, the Pirates, which they ranked dead last, and
home runs, RBIs, runs scored, slugging in ops. Those were
the categories where they were the worst team in baseball.
They're in the top six in every one of those categories,
first in RBIs and and tied for first, and runs scored,
and lead the majors in batting average. It's been a major,

(28:48):
an impressive and amazing transformation to see them go for
one of the worst offenses in baseball to one of
the very best, and to do so what you know,
for large chunks without first Ryan O'Hearn, than Connor Griffin,
now O'Neil Cruz and Spencer Horwitz I mean, they've lost
some key bats during that time, so that's why, you know,
I think he's very aptly nicknamed the Magician. Ezmerlin Valdez

(29:12):
has just been a real revelation for the Pirates.

Speaker 5 (29:15):
I still like Exxon, but the offense has been great,
no disputing that. Can can you possibly envision late August
through September where the starting pitchers are throwing seven when
they're capable? Are they even interested in that? Will last
Craft even be playing?

Speaker 6 (29:34):
Then that's that's a big question, you know, because Ashcraft
as at one hundred and thirteen and a third innings
I believe, and he threw one hundred and eighteen innings
last season, so you figure, I mean, they can only
go a certain threshold above the previous year. You're not
going to go one hundred innings above or even you know,
seventy or eighty innings above. So I'm not sure at

(29:57):
some point that we're going to see Ashcraft or Bubba
Chandler or Jared Jones or somebody moved to the bullpen
and we see Karen Maginsky return to the rotation, and
it seems to be that's that's kind of what you know,
ben Cherrington wasn't really interested in revealing the plan, but
the Pirates have kind of indicated that they're keeping Maginsky

(30:18):
on something of a star starting pitcher's schedule, because he's
going to pitch one game and give you two or
three innings, and then he's going to require several days
of recovery and then be available to go a little
deeper into a game the next time. And that's all
to keep him stretched out so that if he does
have to return to the rotation and throw six or
seven innings, that it's not going to be, you know,

(30:40):
something that's dangerous for him. So it certainly seems like
at some point they're going to have to move some
starting pitching around and put them in the pen to preserve,
you know, their their arms, because these guys just don't
have the mileage on them to be able to make
that jump. So I think you're going to see them
lean more heavily on Schemes and Keller and a little
less so on Ashcraft, Chandler and Jones. You know. But

(31:05):
that's why they're being protective of these pitchers, which you know,
I heard you guys say this earlier, but you know,
it's like they're talking about tomorrow, but you have to
live for today. You have to get your team in
the race. You know, if you want to be a
team that's going to be in the playoff hunt, you
have to stay in the playoff hunt. Leading into the
trade deadline, they're constantly talking about worrying about a tomorrow
that never comes, because when they get there, they're still

(31:29):
worrying about tomorrow. Amazing when you think about that, they're
fifty and forty seven, which is in fourth place, nine
and a half games back. They're only two out of
the wild card. But this is the first time they've
gone into the All Star Break with a winning record
above five hundred since twenty sixteen. I mean, that's a
damning statistic right there.

Speaker 1 (31:49):
Yeah, we were kicking around the idea of adding or
subtracting buyers or sellers at the deadline here, and I
came up with the Hey, let's get rid of Ozuna
and d h o'neio Cruz, keep Mangum in center. If
they do buy, where do you see him buying? Because
I would think bullpen help would be exactly what they

(32:11):
need right now. In the past, it's always been a bat,
but certainly that's not the case this year.

Speaker 6 (32:16):
No, you know, there's still you know, some question marks
at third base. You know, whether Nick Nsolo is after
the five two double play defensively, whether he's good enough there,
whether they can move Triola there, given that Connor Griffin
is out, that would certainly help out defensively. Trill has
been you know, pretty good offensively the last few weeks,
but you know that's not his calling card with with

(32:38):
the offensive. It wouldn't shock me if the Pirates, you know,
obviously bullpen help is the main priority, but the one
way they could get bullpen help is if they acquired
a starting pitcher. And you know they don't have a
lefty in this rotation. So you know, I've seen somebody
suggest like Foster Griffin, the All star left hand or

(32:59):
from the one Washington Nationals, who's not only you know,
an all star right now coming off a really good
first half, but also is affordable at five and a
half million dollar contract, So you don't have to break
the bank to get somebody like that. You probably give
up some you know, good prospects and get a guy
for a team. You know, Washington right now is still
in the mix, but they could fade and that that

(33:21):
would be an interesting one is you added an arm
that you don't have to worry about. You just go
out there and throw Foster Griffin until his arm falls off,
because he's going to be a free agent at the
end of the season.

Speaker 1 (33:31):
And so it's not about, you know.

Speaker 6 (33:32):
Planning for the future, it's about living in and now.

Speaker 5 (33:35):
Kevin Whola is responsible for the absolute debacle that was
the scheduling of those two games on Saturday.

Speaker 6 (33:45):
Yeah, I'd love to know that one, because you know,
they didn't announce until I think after eight o'clock that
the game was being postponed. The players were long gone
by the time they announced it. They let the players
and coaches and everybody get out of the stadium to
avoid the fireworks crowd, and they had fireworks going off
while it was still daylight. So it looked just like

(34:06):
for the most part, just big puffs of smoke, and
you could see a few fireworks here and there, and
they put on quite a display, I guess as it
went on, but it was a it was it kind
of a debacle, and that contributed to Milwaukee being chippy
the rest of the weekend because then they had to
play you know, a doubleheader and then you know they
scratched Mierowski. It was that was one where it seemed

(34:28):
like the Brewers couldn't get out of town fast enough.

Speaker 1 (34:30):
The home team front office is responsible for determining the
makeup date and time for an MLB game that is
rained out before it reaches official status. Yeah, how the
hell did they sandwich those that close?

Speaker 5 (34:46):
I was in that massive humanity Saturday trying to get
to the four o'clock game.

Speaker 1 (34:50):
They wouldn't let me in. Yeah, that was a disaster.

Speaker 6 (34:54):
And you know, and they do that when the Major
League Baseball Draft is going on too, So I mean
it was just a very complicated did Saturday in a
lot of ways, you know, trying to for me, trying
to cover the draft while watching a double header, and
you know, the excitement of somebody said, oh, you know
that as Merlin Valdez, that was amazing the Grand Slam,
and I was like, yeah, I was downstairs watching the Draft.
I heard it, but I didn't see it. You know,

(35:15):
that was, you know, disappointing. It was just a cluster
all the way around.

Speaker 1 (35:20):
Kevin Gorman from the trip Bucco's at fifty and forty
seven going into the All Star break and the derby
tonight in Philadelphia. I'm guessing you're not going to cover that.

Speaker 6 (35:31):
No, but you know, I think Brandon lot might have
been hopeful that he would have been a last minute edition.
You know, that was a guy who had a first
half that was worthy of an All Star appearance, no question.
Let me throw this number out you about Valdez. O'Neil
Cruz went on the injured list on June tenth. Since
June eleventh, You know, you guys mentioned Valdez's numbers since

(35:54):
June eleventh. This is a twenty three game stretch, three
forty six batting average, four h two on base one
point one five to nine ops, six doubles, a triple,
eight homers, twenty two RBIs. To put that into perspective,
number nine was one point one five nine ops. Oh

(36:15):
my god, Just to put that in perspective, O'Neil Kruz
was having an outstanding season. He had a little prolonged
slump there at one stretch, but two sixty four batting average,
three fifty on base eight twenty two ops, ten doubles,
fourteen homers, forty four RBIs in sixty four games. I
mean I mean, the Pirates couldn't have asked for anything

(36:36):
better than you know, and here's Magnum's numbers since June tenth,
three forty three, three ninety three, four fifty four slash
line seven doubles, a triple, a homer and ten RBIs.
They couldn't have prayed for, you know, two guys to
step in and fill O'Neil Cruz's shoes the way that
those two have, and it's really given them the luxury
of considering, as you guys mentioned, what to do when Cruz.

Speaker 1 (37:00):
Back, because they do.

Speaker 6 (37:02):
They could move on from Azuna, or they could just
make them a pin you know, very expensive pinch hitter.
But it gives you the opportunity to either cycle Cruise
or Spencer Horwitz or a low Reynolds O'Hearn through the
d H spot and keep Valdez in the lineup and
right field and preserve O'Hearn's legs so he can stay
at first base. I mean, there's a lot of possibilities

(37:22):
with this Pirates team when everybody gets healthy, and that's
not even counting Connor Griffin, who should be back sometime in.

Speaker 1 (37:28):
Early to mid September.

Speaker 6 (37:29):
So you know this is a team that has, you know,
to go into the trade deadline and not have to
worry about acquiring bats, and to be able to focus
on pitching, whether it's in the rotation or the bullpen,
is a real luxury for the Pirates if they can
keep everybody healthy, which is this season has been a
huge if.

Speaker 1 (37:44):
Kevin Gorman from the trip. Always a pleasure, buddy, Thanks
so much for talking next week. Hey, thanks for having
