First off, he's a veteran of the Pittsburgh music scene,
currently the lead singer of the band Geen the Werewolf,
and they have a brand new single out right now.

Which is it being played on DVE yet?

It should be Ladies and gentleman John Ballen from Team
the Werewolf. John, this is your first time judging a
Pittsburgh power Ballad challenge. Now, you've sang your share of
power ballads through the years, particularly in Red Beach's band,
where you do a few more covers.

Geenea whrewof does a lot of original music.

Speaker 3 (02:04):
But what do you think it is about a power
ballad that makes it special to you?

Speaker 1 (02:09):
What's the hook for you?

Speaker 5 (02:10):
I think that you have to have the voice that
gets up there. You can't really sing a low, low voice.
You know, you have to have the strong that well,
should you say strong when you sing?

Speaker 6 (02:22):
You know, you have to have a lot of that.
You have to and and I think it's a lot
about melody too.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (02:25):
I think it's got to be pretty but sappy, so
not poppy pretty but.

Speaker 6 (02:29):

So what you're saying, basically, it's got to have a
mixture of the vocal historyonics along with the beautiful melody
to puk you in a little bit.

Yeah, you know I claim you as the Pittsburgh a

Uh, what, I grew up in Fox Chapel.

Well, but where do you live now? Oh?

I live in Oakmont.

Oh, you enjoyed the bakery. We are thrilled to have

telling us about the story.

When you hung out with Bob Dylan. Yes, why you

here last night and night I thought maybe you guys
got together.

I don't know what he used to call me, wammy bar.
So it'd be great if I went there and he
said it is whammy barh. But no, I didn't even
know he was in town. I went to see King
Zax a couple of days ago, though, Well, how was that?

That was amazing? Yeah, my favorite band. Well what do
you think about the state of live music right now?

Speaker 9 (04:56):
I think it's doing, you know, it's I heard from
the grapevine that this smaller venues aren't doing as well
now as the arenas are doing.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
But I know that.

Speaker 9 (05:08):
Everyone I know loves to go to a live show,
you know. And I'll go to a live show just
to see live music. I don't even care what kind
of music it is. I just love to see a
band up there playing.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (05:18):
Well, you know you last year also did this great
sort of tutorial for us, and you brought your guitar,
and I was hoping maybe once again you could regale
us okay with your chops, let's hear for Red Beach
getting up to play guitar. Rah, you're got a private
concept for Red Beach now, Uh, I might want to
coach your the singer of the Red Beach band to

come out here in a second as well. But if
you could just throw a few licks at us of
what like a typical power ballad like riff that you
might hear at the beginning in some of those crying
like little runs that the guitarists do at the beginning
of the power ballads. Yeah, like the one that the

tear drop kind of riffs that come out, you know, perfect.

(06:27):
Now do you agree with John's assessment? Would you add
anything to what makes up a great power ballad?

Speaker 9 (06:35):
I can, you know, I agree with him when he
was saying, And it was very interesting because I've never
been asked that, Oh, well, I'll let him mike here. Yeah,
I've never been asked that question. But Home Sweet Home
is one of my favorite ones, by the way, and
Miles Away was a really good song for us. But
I know what Mark was saying that in the eighties
sometimes bands would come out with too many ballads, like

night Ranger was getting known as like a ballad band.

Speaker 6 (07:00):
Yeah, and Winger.

Speaker 9 (07:01):
You know, Miles Away was our biggest single, but we
kind of stopped selling records for a little bit there
because people were, oh, it's another power ballad band. So
at the time it kind of was not as rock,
you know, because everyone was doing it Death Leopard. But
now power ballads just.

Speaker 3 (07:21):
You know, it's like yacht rock like that, like it's
come all the way back around. But what you've told
us before about like how when you know Beavis and
Butt had made fun of Winger, How like you know, Kip,
you guys knew that.

Speaker 6 (07:31):
Like this is it. We're kind of screwed.

Speaker 3 (07:34):
But what what was he thinking about this push towards
power ballads in the genre? You know, because all of
the sort of metal bands at that time were trying
to put whether it was The Scorpions doing Still Loving
You or Poison doing every Rows, those were the ones
getting airplay.

Speaker 6 (07:49):
Those are the ones.

Speaker 9 (07:50):
And on our second album, in the Heart of the Young,
they wanted miles Away to be our first single, and
we had to rush in and write a couple of
rock songs, easy Come, Easy Go and an Good Enough
in about an hour. We wrote both those songs because
we didn't want our first single to be a ballad
and uh and they were both hits, which was great.

But it's true you needed.

Speaker 9 (08:11):
That power ballad in the eighties to have your big,
you know, worldwide hit.

Speaker 3 (08:17):
Well with your the solo project, you have the Red
Beach band, John Bellen is your vocalist. Do you think
maybe we could hear a little bit of a maybe
a winger power ballad?

Speaker 1 (08:27):
What do you say? Here we go John Bellen on.

Vocals, just like a verse in a chorus for us.
And this will set the stage where our power ballad,

Loved the song I found myself driving around this weekend
what things used to be. I was earwormed by it.
I'm curious about the inspiration. Is there a business that
you saw while you were driving or the inspiration for
the song something that is no longer where it used
to be?

Speaker 16 (11:40):
Oh my gosh, that's I mean, that was really the
the crux of the origin of the song. I mean,
all the references are in the song.

Speaker 6 (11:54):
I mean, you're putting me on the spot.

Speaker 1 (11:56):
I don't know.

Speaker 12 (11:56):
I don't know if there was the one that stuck
out as the catalyst.

The way that the way that people talk about when
Froggy's was downtown.

I'm admittedly a bit too young to have experienced that,
but I do. I do yearn for that, the way
that people.

It is not our are It's not what I hear
my my my co songwriter actually just became a dad
on Friday or else you would be here with me,
but uh no.

I would. I would.

I would say I've you know, judging judging by my
character and personality, I've been a solo artist more often
than I've actually been with people. Actually it's my co
writer Jonathan who kicked me out of our first band.
So but we've and but we've managed to recover and
make songs like where things used to be.

So wow, they're still friends. Yeah, it's called Crosby, Stills
and Nash type stuff.

Do I've got a couple? Actually, First, we've been doing
this a while now. We've heard injuries pounded and pounded
and pounded into our brains.

I remember that one from hanging out and Beaver Counting
when I was a little kid.

I honestly, if you if you if you grow up
around Pittsburgh enough, you know, uh grew up here, went
to school here and stayed here. You're you're gonna hear
it if you hang out with the people of a
variety of ages, let's say.

Welcome back to Behind the Music with kJ Devlin, Past
and Furious. Devlin's love of Pittsburgh's past quickly became an
issue with his bandmates and his first band, the yesterdays,
when clashes with co band leader Rich Sizzula over song.

Speaker 1 (15:02):
Content reached its boiling point.

Speaker 12 (15:05):
Gad Dev's was super inspired by Rick Seabeck's documentary Things
It Ain't There Anymore because the VHS tape was stuck
in the vcar at his mom's house and it's the
only thing you could watch. He got the idea to
do parody songs using Seaback's name, like Baby Comes Seedback
or Thick as a Rick. I thought he was joking,
but then one night he ripped into Seaback in the
saddle at a gig Rhythm Heights, and I just figured, okay,

we could all do well to stop sniffing as much
airplane glue.

Speaker 3 (15:31):
It was around then the Devlin's preoccupation with the past
started affecting the band's live performances.

Speaker 1 (15:37):
We were booked at light up night and he was
nowhere to be fine.

Speaker 12 (15:39):
Then finally we spotted him on Standwich, standing underneath where
the Max and Irma's burgermark he used to be, and
he was h well.

Speaker 1 (15:46):
Frankly it was.

Speaker 3 (15:48):
Erect Kj's fiance Janet philip Kowski describes even more troubling
encounters with his fixation with Pittsburgh's past.

Speaker 17 (15:57):
He couldn't perform unless I dressed up like a care
from Hills. He had a replica of the Kaufman's clock
over the headboard. Let's just say that caused more than
a few bumps on the head But also he insisted
on calling me Sophie.

I was like, whatever's gonna make.

It was clear to everyone Kj's love of Pittsburgh's past
had morphed into a descent into madness.

He kept wanting to drive with the old donut chops
and Bieber that used to be a church where the
nuns made piogi used to raise money for Polish ladies
with rickets during the depression or something like that. I
was like, kJ, what does this have to do with
the music? And he looked at me and just say
call me rick and you must trust me. And finally
I was like, okay, that's enough, mister Miaggi. Why don't
you go wax the cough? And I quit and joined

my cousin Pete's Uriah Heap cover band. We recalled Uriah
Carry and not for nothing. But they're still talking about
our nineteen ninety seven said at the Fayette County four
Age Festage Bud Murphy's.

Devlin's music career fizzle. The offers to perform in his
Seaback Team cover band dried up and he was just
fond it until Janet came home one day with a plan.

Speaker 1 (17:03):
I was like, Hunt, why don't you just be yourself?
The world already has a seedback and put.

Speaker 17 (17:08):
All that weird sexual energy you have for things that
aren't here anymore into a song for the DVE power
Ballad Challenge, and he was like, you really think I
could win?

And I was like, I know you can.

Speaker 17 (17:22):
Of course, I would have said anything to not have
to get back in that sex swing wearing a dingbat's
waitress outfit anymore.

Speaker 3 (17:28):
kJ took Janet's words to heart, and the rest is
Pittsburgh power Ballad History, sun and right.

When he come back on behind the music, kJ Devlin
suffers a head injury that could forever derail his ability
to remember where things used to be.

Man, I'll tell you what right off the bat, uh
the harmonies. In the beginning, I was like, okay, here
we go. Uh, and then you really belted it out
Like I said, I thought the perfect combination is the
harmonies and the high vocals man and a key change, dude,
And and I thought on all the song structure was awesome.
So you got a bridge in there. You should have
said in the bridge something about the bridges, but hey, oh.

Yeah, all right, well deduct two points. All right, Mark Madden, Well,
I can.

Honestly say that's the best vocal performance I've ever heard
from someone who looks like Freddie Mercury Gone to Seed.

I think it had that.

Power ballad vibe, the backup vocals.

Very strong, sing along chorus, very strong. The lyrics I.

Loved in Pittsburgh references out the ying Yang. No stone
was left unturned in that regard. And I thought the
mix was reminiscent when Phil Spector worked with the Ramones,
except nobody got killed.

And lastly nobody got killed right, fair enough. Lastly, the

I thought it was great.

I liked you made eye contact with us, the judges
and the wonderful DJs and the people.

I'd love it if you would wear like a shirt

Yeah, but you know, I thought you did a really
good job.

I also like the lyrics very clever and that is
a typical power ballad from the eighties.

Oh DV really grewed him on that one. His song
Don't Blink was the best of the lot. He just
picked the wrong tomlinism as the title. He should have
named it Paint the Bond Red. Don't Blink sounds like
a love song from an optometrist, but it was poetry.

He was rob Now a two time loser, Frank consulted
the only person who he really trusted, the court mandated
psychiatrist from his conviction on two counts of stalking Beth's
Nodgrass doctor Kathleen Fagnelli.

So I encouraged him to use his obsessive compulsions and
channel them into a song about his obsessions, specifically the
obsession with winning the DVE power Ballad contest, and that
