Speaker 1 (00:00):
See that's the Tom Win myth. He's an absolute fraud.
He won with somebody else's team leaders and culture. He
left the organization in worse shape than when he got here.
That's undeniable. He took over a team that won a
super Bowl two years prior. It ain't gonna win a
Super Bowl again in two years. That's cold and it's crappy,
(00:22):
but it's reality. And as we talked about with Tom,
because Tom Win left the team crappier than he did
when he got here, it's not a good job.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
I talked about that at the open of the show.
Speaker 1 (00:38):
Freeman Signetti, even Stefanski, which they're not going to talk
to anyway, and even some of the top coordinators they
are talking to, like they asked permission just a little
bit ago to talk to Chris Shula, the Rams defensive coordinator,
and Shielhausen whatever his name is that sounds like that
(00:59):
sounds like the German family's name from beer Fest, the Shieldhausens. Uh,
he's their passing game coordinator. They ask for permission to
talk to him. If those guys get a better opportunity,
they're not going to come to Pittsburgh, and they might
because there are The New York Giants are a better
opportunity than the Steelers. And I know a lot of
(01:22):
you are recoiling and hatred for me and sputtering and
doing spit takes. New York got a quarterback, they got
Jackson Darts. The Steelers have buppkus. Oh yeah, Will Howard.
And by the way, I'm gonna have to start talking
Will Howard up because I want to see them do
the de Fabo gambit. Actually we call it the Will
(01:43):
Howard gambit by way of distancing it from de Fabo,
so I can take credit for the idea when he
doesn't write the obvious column. But Defabo says to play.
Will Howard is a starter for a year. The fans
love him, and they wouldn't turn on him for a
while on their way to four and thirteen. And then
you draft uh Arch. I've embellished at because the favor
(02:05):
is not nearly as evil as I am. Arch Tank
for Arch. Say it with me, Pittsburgh Tank for Arch.
That should be the chant of the draft, because Arch
is staying in Tank for Arch, Tank for Arch, Tank
for Arch. We get Brett Michaels to write a song.
(02:27):
What could I can I work that into a poison song.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
No I No.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
I can't. I was just going through. Every rose has
its storn talk dirty to me. Ain't nothing but a
good time, And it would be nothing but a good
time to tank for Arch.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
No, the Giants job's better. It's a better job, but
you know what's.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
Gonna happen because of the long term job security that
you presumably have, and maybe not because Noel, Coward and
Tom went all stuck around for but they won right away.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
Winning right away gets you a job security.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
I mean, I mean Noel took over the worst team
in football history and had them in the playoffs in
three years and in a Super Bowl a couple years
after that. That seemed impossible, but he could draft and
develop and they had you know, Art Junior, and Dan
was a big foot.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
I mean, Dan's the.
Speaker 1 (03:25):
Secret sauce for the Steeler success dating from the late
sixties till he got feeble and then passed. Dan Rooney
is absolutely the secret sauce for the Steelers success. But
the new coach isn't gonna win right away and so
might not have the same job security. Although I bet
Art the second in the interest of doing it like
(03:46):
Dad and Granddad will probably grant him. How long does
does a coach get with most teams in the NFL,
like what three, four years?
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Maybe five?
Speaker 1 (03:56):
This guy's gonna get like six seven at the very least,
and he would have to suck out loud and the
team would have to not only lose, but make very
little progress to get fired after six or seven.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
And by the way, if you missed what.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
Art said today, he talked that they don't want to
waste the season, that Tomlin had them in contention every year,
and that's what they want. Blah blah blah. And to
quote Stix, he's fooling himself. They should play that in
the fourth quart instead of renegade. But we'll see. And
it leads me to believe that in trying to scratch
and claw and maybe keeping veterans and bringing you more
(04:31):
veterans with what they have thirty million in cap space,
that they could scratch their way to eight and nine,
seven and ten, maybe even the mythical nine and eights
and not move forward at all. That's the thing with
the Steelers the last decade. They haven't moved forward even
a little bit, not move forward even a little bit.
But that's another We talked about the Tomlin myth this segment.
That's another thing that's exemplar of the Tomlin myth. The
(04:54):
last decade's been an absolute waste of effing time and
very few people see it that way. Okay, so we
got calls on the fifteens. Up next, we want your calls. Actually,
we'll say today and yesterday's been a lot of fun.
Yesterday's show was all Ad lives. I'm a bit more
prepared today. Watch this hour. They'll hire Tom went back.
(05:15):
He changed his mind. Call now eight three three four
one two WSDX.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
Tomorrow nights, the Pens face off against the Flyers. Game
time is seven. Our coverage starts at six here every
game and the best coverage right here on your home
of the Pens one o five nine The x.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
iHeartRadio Alter You Go twenty twenty six presented by Capitol.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
One three You go?
Speaker 4 (05:39):
Are you right out? Oh?
Speaker 2 (05:40):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (05:41):
The X at one oh five nine.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
This is really interesting.
Speaker 1 (05:50):
The quarterback at Oregon on Dante Moore, who was thought
to be a first round pick this year, He's going
to stay in college for the twenty twenty six season,
as his arch manning nil has changed the draft I
mean just markedly so with stuff like this, when you
can make that much money in college and you can
kind of wait out when you get drafted and still
(06:13):
have a NEXS egg being built and maybe get to
where you want to go instead of Pittsburgh eight three
three four one two wxdx number to call. Here's something
that well, may you know what wants to laugh. Josina
(06:34):
Anderson says that Mike tom would quit because Pittsburgh didn't
appreciate him enough. Unquote, Well, if Pittsburgh didn't appreciate Tom
with enough, it's because he won three playoff games in
fifteen years. Josina Anderson is usually full of craps. She
makes stuff up lies to further her agenda. I do
(06:56):
think Tom would probably get upset by the fire tomlin
Chance and his family did.
Speaker 2 (07:02):
Dad, how can they do that when you did so.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
Much for this city, to which I'd say, yeah, but
I only won three playoff games in fifteen years. But
I can see Tom On being upset by that because
he's a big baby. But every coach of every losing
team gets booed. Now you can make the argument that
(07:25):
Tom Win wasn't a losing coach, that he never had
a losing season. Tomin did have a losing season. It's
called the postseason winning percentage of four hundred in the postseason.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
That sucks. Let's go to Jim.
Speaker 5 (07:42):
Jim.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
You're on with Mark.
Speaker 1 (07:47):
Jim.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
You're on, mister mad Yeah, talk hey, Mark.
Speaker 1 (07:52):
Bye, goodbye, goodbye. If you're not ready to talk, f off,
be ready. If you don't say something, go here at
the minute I say you're on your outs. Let's go
to Colin. Colin, you're all with double m Mark.
Speaker 6 (08:06):
Why are we discounting Bill Howard so quickly without ever
seeing him play?
Speaker 2 (08:11):
Yup, he'll be great. I'd start him.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
Turn your rate again, another ass almost out.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
Of the other word, goodbye. Yeah. Will Howard sucks.
Speaker 1 (08:24):
He's what a fifth round pick? Brady's the exception at
sixth round that proves the rule. But I'd start him
like the FABO said that Will Howard gambit. I'd start
him go four and thirteen and tank four Arch Tank
four Arch Tank four Arch. Let's go to Greg and Denver. Greg,
you're on with.
Speaker 4 (08:44):
Mark, Hey, Mark two parter here for you one? How
much job security does O Mark Kahn actually have?
Speaker 1 (08:52):
And then too, I think Omar has a ton of
job security because he waited his turn and he's a
steal or whatever.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
I mean, I'd fire him.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
I would have fired him the minute Tom Win resigned
because I would want to restore more power over the
roster to the GM. But you can't do that with
Omar Kahn. And then again, what if you bring in
Chris Shula. Is he gonna have power over the roster
a rookie head coach? But then Khan has power over
the roster. The guy who should that's still in the
building is Andy Widel, gotcha?
Speaker 4 (09:24):
Then second part, what about I mean Bill O'Brien, Doug Peterson.
I mean, I like O'Brien more.
Speaker 1 (09:30):
But they're they're not they're they're not going to recycle
and they're too old.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
Just not what they're looking for.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
I'm a big Bill O'Brien fan for what he did
at Penn State, how he saved the program after the
Sandusky thing then handed it off to Franklin. If Bill
O'Brien should get a statue built anywhere, it should be
at Crebey Valley. In fact, they should put his statue
where the Paterno One used to be, and they should
restore the Paterno statue. By the way, they absolutely should
(09:58):
They probably never should have fired him, And that's a
total one to eighty from what I said at the time.
But they probably never should have fired him. But I'll
get back to that someday. Let's go to Franco Franko.
You're on with double M.
Speaker 5 (10:09):
Yeah, just you know, hear you be a real critical
of coach comin for under at least as I understand,
But you know, the teams get to that playoff and
don't perform as well. Yeah, I don't hear you saying
much about that. What do you mean they kind of
let let us down and let him down as well too.
Speaker 1 (10:23):
Yeah, he's the Well I said earlier in the show
that the players have no right to criticize Tom whin
leaving if he was pushed, which I don't think he
was based on what Art said today, But I don't
know if I believe Art either. But yeah, I said
earlier in the show that the players let him down.
But it's been fifteen years and they've won three playoff
games and none in the last nine years.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
All those players weren't there all that time.
Speaker 1 (10:47):
He is the common denominator and furthermore, had absolute autonomy.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
He's the architect of that failure. You do understand that.
Speaker 4 (10:57):
Yeah, I hear you, but they played so dismal.
Speaker 5 (10:59):
It's like I don't no, I.
Speaker 1 (11:01):
Heard you the first time. But he is the architect
of that failure. All these teams that played dismal, not
least the one that got routed Monday night, the fifth
straight playoff lost for the Steelers, where they lost by
double digits. Tom Win assembled that team, He motivated that team,
he prepared that team. That was his team. He's the architect.
Let's go to the beach boy, beach boy, you're on?
Speaker 6 (11:25):
What up?
Speaker 2 (11:26):
Real quick?
Speaker 4 (11:28):
Oh? Sorry? Mark?
Speaker 6 (11:29):
Do you think that leading to the Texans only reinforced
Mike Tomlin's mindset that playing defense can win in this league?
And then he went in that meeting with Art the
second just with a reinforced belief that you have to
win with defense.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
I think Art believes that too.
Speaker 1 (11:46):
No I I had a theory yesterday that that Tom
Win and Art argued in the meeting, and that's what
made tom Win quit. Like whether he would make him
fire you know, his lackey, Tarrell Austin or whatever. But
but uh, I got rebuked by a long time local
media guy who said Art would never have the balls
to do that.
Speaker 2 (12:06):
So that's what I'm going with. I think this was
all Tomlin. Thank you for the call though.
Speaker 1 (12:10):
Okay, up next we'll do some hockey talk with the
great Peter maguire, gracious enough to push back from yesterday
one oh five ninety X.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
Find yourself needing a little prost holiday cash? Did you
pay the gas bill? X? As your shot at extra cash?
Speaker 7 (12:24):
Plays some big marks thirteen times a day, nine am
through nine KIA.
Speaker 2 (12:28):
You could win one thousand dollars.
Speaker 3 (12:29):
He's missed the money man.
Speaker 7 (12:31):
Listen all day for your chances some extra cash on
one oh five nine.
Speaker 2 (12:36):

Iheartsports Network, presented by Draft Kings sports.
Speaker 7 (12:55):
Book Stealer's owner Our Rooney the Second says he wasn't
surprised by coach Mike tom will his resignation, but he
was caught off guard by the timing of it. Over
to tonight's college basketball slate that includes Pitt riding a
three game skid into Georgia Tech and Penn State hosting
UCLA and Lakers starred Lebron James as controversial statements by
his agent on a podcast are in a reflection of
(13:17):
his views as a marquee client.

Speaker 8 (13:30):
It's not fair.
Speaker 2 (13:31):
It's not Faren's not fair. The exit one five nine.
Speaker 1 (13:35):
I like hockey better than football, So we're gonna put
all this tom and crap on the backburner and welcome
aboard of guy who's done it all in the great game.
Always a pleasure to talk to our good friend Pierre
maguire here. The Penguins have lost three in a row,
and they've been odd games very close, but they've only
scored two goals total in those games.
Speaker 2 (13:54):
Why have they stopped scoring? What do you see.
Speaker 4 (13:57):
Some pretty good goaltending from the opposition an urgency, especially
from the Boston Bruins. On Sunday have Bruins team that
is probably overchieving a little bit like Pittsburgh cast from
through most of this year, and then last week, I
think you'd have to say, in that really tight game
that went through a shootout against Stampa, Vassileski was phenomenal.
He made some unbelievable says at key times in the
(14:18):
game for Tampa. So I think it's a combination of
you know, it's a tired time of the year for
everybody because of the schedule. Tampa is the hottest team
in the league. Everybody knows that. Part of why they're
the hottest team is Vassilevski's been so good for them,
and Pittsburgh's trying. I got to give them credit for that.
They are really compete and hard. They just don't have
a lot of peer finishing right now.
Speaker 1 (14:40):
Carlson's on for at least a couple of weeks. How
much will that hurt the Penguins and in what ways.
Speaker 4 (14:46):
It's going to hurt him? On the power play, even
though I think Christopher Latang do well, there were some
really good puck movement on that power play last night
once they established zone presence, so I think that's positive.
Getting Malcolm back will help the power play, But Carlson's
a little bit of an problem for them not having him,
so you'll hurt there. It'll break up a real good
partnership that he had with Parker water scheme. It's unfortunately
(15:09):
those two guys are really routing in the shape, so
it takes a little bit of a nick out of
their defense. And then I think the biggest thing is
just a transition game. Eric's really good at the transition game,
and I think that hurts a little bit for the
Penguins when it comes to creating offense.
Speaker 2 (15:22):
Know, as I mentioned, they lost in a shootout last night.
Speaker 1 (15:24):
Shilovs is now one in five in shootouts and has
conceded eleven goals on sixteen shootout attempts this year, two
goals on three shots last night.
Speaker 2 (15:33):
Why does he struggle so mightily at shootouts?
Speaker 6 (15:36):
Pier, It's almost like he's sprosen in time.
Speaker 4 (15:39):
I was watching really close because you brought that up
to me a couple of weeks ago, and I said,
you know what, I'm gonna start watching more tape on
him when he comes to the shootouts. So I watched
last night shoot up and it's almost like he's frozen.
He doesn't track the puck very well, he doesn't have
a great lateral movement when it comes to the shootouts.
And one of the goals he can watch as a
couchurov game winner last night watching Koch drops and he
(16:00):
doesn't even shoot the pop card. He knows he's got him,
he knows he's frozen, and he just el elevates the
pucket to the open part of the net. So you know,
to me, it's it's probably a little bit of lack
of confidence, and it's also probably a little bit of
lack of technique.
Speaker 1 (16:15):
We've talked about this before, but would you sub shilloffs
on for shootouts because it ain't got no better?
Speaker 2 (16:22):
What no better? Last night?
Speaker 1 (16:24):
Because his performance in shootouts, Pierre those points lost that
could keep Pittsburgh out of the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (16:30):
There's no question it's more than fair to bring that up.
Those extra points really do matter a lot, especially when
you're a team like Pittsburgh that's I think overachieving right now,
but they're realistically still a playoff candidate. But you keep
losing these extra points and Let's say you lose nine
of them or ten of them. That's basically the margin
between making the playoffs and not making the plass. Most
(16:51):
people think between ninety two and ninety four points will
get you into the playoffs this year. So if you
end up this season at eighty two or eighty three points,
those are the points that kept you out because of
those extra points in the shootout.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
Would you sub him out you're the coach, Yes or no.
Speaker 4 (17:08):
It's a hard thing to do. I thought about it
a lot. In a lot of different situations, I probably
would not, but it's one of those things that is
definitely tantalizing. There's no question it's tantalizing, especially when you
look at his record.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
You know what's funny, Pierre is I was talking about
this last night with Josh Joey of the Athletic. Some
teams don't have to care about the shootout, like Colorado.
They know they're getting a ton of wins, a ton
of points. The shootouts don't matter to them. They don't
need those extra points. I mean they get them anyway,
but they don't need them, whereas some teams. I remember
(17:42):
our mutual friend who we missed very much, the late
Ray Shiro, he would always have like a Christensen or
a Yoking on the roster because they were great at shootouts.
I mean they were good players otherwise too, but that
was a big part of their employment. And of course
those Penguas had I think the best shootout goalie ever
and Mark Andre Farr.
Speaker 4 (18:01):
That's such a good point, just so everybody knows, I
want to be transparent. Ray and I talked about the
philosophy of shootouts from the time he got the manager's
job in Pittsburgh to the time that he left and
eventually moved down to New Jersey. So we created protocols,
not so much because I was behind the scenes celting him.
He just wanted to talk about it and try to
define it. So you're absolutely right about that, and you're
(18:24):
spot hunted and talked about Mark Andre Fleury to me.
I'll give you an example, just a back march point
up where everybody, I watched the Toronto Colorado game the
other night. Toronto goes in there and wins, and they
win the game because one, Austin Matthews goes to another level.
Two they got great goal tendant from Joe le and
three you could see that Colorado did not care. Once
(18:45):
they got to overtime. They were airing it out, so
you needed to get some saves. And if they went
to the shootout and they lost, it didn't care. But
they were airing it out and overtime, and they gave
up chance after chance and overtime because they were reckless.
But eventually they lost. I'm a really kneelander goal. So
the point is, and the moral of the story is
teams like Colorado that are really up to the standings
(19:06):
right now, they're not worried about that extra point. So
they're going to really go after you, whether it's in
regulation or in overtime, to try to grape you. And
if they don't, then they get through the shootout and
they don't care.
Speaker 2 (19:17):
We're talking to Peter Maguire.
Speaker 1 (19:19):
Pierre brought to us by always Say flagging in traffic control. Pierre,
here's an odd question, based on mostly last night, but
a couple prior games. Is Sidney Crosby passing too much? Rather,
you know, passing up some good chances.
Speaker 4 (19:33):
He's passing up chances. There's no question. But I want
to say this, and I did not know you were
going to ask that question. The stretch pass that he
makes on the backhand in overtime.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
Oh Bran, It's one of the best passes ever.
Speaker 1 (19:44):
And I wish it would have resulted in the goal
so everybody would talk about it and see it exactly.
Speaker 4 (19:50):
I Mark, I was blown away by that. You know,
you grow up watching all these great players like I
had the privilege of, and then you end up coaching
so many of the great players over the last thirty years,
which I had the unbelievable honor to do, and then
you watch that and you're like, that's otherworldly. I don't
think people realize just how much skill, talent, and strength
(20:11):
and vision that requires to make a play like that.
And I wish the play would have been it up
as a goal, but it didn't. But Sid is definitely
passing up chances, there's no question about that. I'd like
to see him shot more.
Speaker 1 (20:22):
Have Guinny Malcas scored a great goal last night to
tie the game. Beat Vassilevsky low to the far side,
and beating him low with his pad work is no
easy task. I Gety came back from injury with some jump, didn't.
Speaker 4 (20:33):
He he did? I like to play on the wall too.
By the Tang forcing Genseil into the turnover the leads
to the Malcolm chance. So I agree with you on
that too. That's a great shot against a unique goalie,
and you could see Gino's amped up. He definitely has
them jump in his game if he stays healthy, if
Sid stays healthy, if Russ stays healthy, and they can
(20:54):
still get the same kind of effort out of Door
and his ott and charity night in and night out.
I think this team has a legitimate has to be
a playoff team.
Speaker 1 (21:01):
I really did over the weekend when Rust was out.
It was like Dan Mues threw all the sticks in
the pilot center ice like you do for pickup, and
that's how he put the lines together. I think News
has mostly gotten it right. I didn't understand scrambling three
of the four lines with one player out.
Speaker 5 (21:18):
You watch the.
Speaker 4 (21:19):
Game like you do a ride and you say, okay,
I'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt. But
I didn't. I was confused by it as well, especially
when you look at the results. You know, two to
one lost to Calgary, a team that was really scuffling,
and then you look at obviously and one nothing lost
in Boston, so you say, Okay, you know they scored
one goal in you know, one hundred and twenty minutes.
(21:40):
They got to be better than that. And then they
going to last night and the amazingly tight game. The
fact that they need going to shootout is tough. But yeah, no,
I didn't understand that over the weekend.
Speaker 8 (21:50):
I did not.
Speaker 1 (21:52):
I got to credit a dark horse on defense for
the Penguins, and it's Jack Saint Ivany, who was hurt
a lot then got in the lineup.
Speaker 5 (21:58):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (21:59):
I mean, he ain't no car Carlson, but he's done
well and maybe he can step up a little bit.
Maybe not the same way I mean obviously Pierre, but
but it's a few more quality minutes when called upon.
Speaker 4 (22:09):
First time I saw Jackson and Ivant he played, he
was at the university. The second time I saw him play,
he went in the portal and he played at Boston College.
He was like, this kid's gonna play in the NHL
at some point. He's too big, he's too physically, he's
too fast. I know we talked about him last week
or the week before when he was playing with Ryan Shay.
He's a great tandem. I obviously he gets to play
with Watherspoon now because of the injury to Carlson. But
(22:32):
now Jackson and Ivan was a fantastic athlete. He was
a tremendous college player. He's been a great minor league player,
and now he's evolving into a real solid NFL player.
That's a good piece of scouting by the Pittsburgh Pain
was to bring a kid like that into the organization.
Speaker 1 (22:46):
You know, when he won me over Pierre last year,
somebody took a cheap shot at sid he came off
the bench and went after the guy. He should have
been suspended. What do they get twenty games? But it
was like time to want a line change. But he
really won me over. I would have kept them in
the lineup forever. And I'm glad he's playing now.
Speaker 4 (23:03):
Well that's good. You know again, kids like this, they're
so athletic, and they care so much, and they're so passionate,
and they know how hard it is to get to
the National Hockey League. And once they get there, they
see guys like Crosby, and they see guys like Malcolm,
and they see guys like Carlson on Tanna like, I
can't believe I'm playing with this guy. These guys and
then they'll do whatever it takes to try to stay there.
And that's one of the things that Jack obviously realized
(23:26):
he had to do.
Speaker 1 (23:27):
Pierre, if you knew this, there actually was a Saint Ivany.
He is the patron state of third pair defenseman.
Speaker 2 (23:34):
Uh, we got, we.
Speaker 1 (23:35):
Got, We got Philadelphia in town tomorrow night. Uh, they
got the same points as the Penguins. Exactly where are
the Flyers at? They play tonight as well, and we're
both big fans of their first year coach Rick Hackett.
Speaker 4 (23:49):
Yeah, they're playing in buff Florid Tonite. That's a big
game for both teams. Philadelphia just kind of lost a
bit of their identity. If they're not getting a lot
of offense from connect Me, if they're not getting a
lot of offense out of Vegas, they're having a tough time.
Christian Devorak is definitely not a number one center. They've
got a lot of guys that are really good two
three and fours they don't and probably more three and
(24:09):
fours than twos. So the upper part of their lineup
is certain just because they don't have that elite centerment
right now, they're definitely waiting on Matt Day, niche Cooff,
who they thought was going to be a home run
head or that has not developed yet. They're still a
little shortened goal, but they're trying to get better obviously.
I think Rick's coach fantastically well. I know there are
(24:30):
a lot of pumpings out there, especially online, that are
going after him because niche Coff is underachievement. I don't
agree with those people.
Speaker 1 (24:37):
Yeah, Ryan Whitney, Ryan Whitney sticking up for Meetzkoff, who's
a handful to deal with.
Speaker 2 (24:42):
I guess wit would he was a handful to deal with.
Speaker 4 (24:44):
Two. Yeah, I didn't know Ryan got after him. So
I appreciate you telling me. But all I can say like,
Rick Pocket's a really good coach, and for those people
that are taking shots at him, why not call Phil
Kessel and find out how well Rick Pocket worked with
Phil Kessel on one of the big difference that was
when the Pittsburgh Penguins were winning Stanley Cups. Rick Tockett
(25:05):
knows how to coach skill players, and I can tell
you right now, I coach Trick Tacket, and Rick Tockett
knows how to play with skill players, and he never
wants look down on skill players. He wants guys to
compete in off three his own though, and that's a
big part of being a successful organization.
Speaker 1 (25:20):
Now, like they are waiting for Meatchkoff to come good.
But let's get back to Ziegris Pierre, because that's his
first year in Philly and he's become a legit star.
I thought he was like kind of a show biz
guy with the Michigan ont in Anaheim, but he's become
relatively complete, relatively quick in Philadelphia.
Speaker 4 (25:39):
Because Rick tockets push the ray buttons with him. Then
I think if you would ask Trevor Zegers, he would
probably tell you that as well. I'm watching that happen
and I'm saying, this is reminding me of what Rick
do with Phil Kessel in Pittsburgh. So now the truth
of the matter is Trevor's a really talented kid. I
watched him when he was at eleven, twelve and thirteen
playing for mid Fairfield. That's the same throw damn that
(25:59):
gave each of them quick. It's the same program that
gave me cam Atkinson, the same program they gave me
Max patri Ready and Jiegers and Spencer Night. Your teammates
there the Chachekago Blackbows School Center. So I go a
long way back to watching them play. You know, Trevor
obviously has a lot of talent. I give him a
lot of credit for really trying to change the perception
(26:20):
that he had amongst a lot of people in the
National Hockey League. He's being in Malcanton and tough to
coach because I think Rick Hockett would not tell you that.
I think Rick Hacket's enjoyed working with him.
Speaker 1 (26:30):
Pierre, the Olympics aren't too far off the ice surface
in Milan, permitting, and I'm here and I bet you
are too.
Speaker 2 (26:37):
Then forget about the trade da inline.
Speaker 1 (26:39):
There's likely to be x amount of deals made before
the Olympics because teams that want to trade assets don't
want to risk them being hurt at the Olympics. I'm
talking about if they make a hockey slop. That said, Uh,
every team except maybe two or three's in the playoff race.
Speaker 2 (26:55):
So I'm not sure what I expect. How about you?
Speaker 4 (26:58):
But you know I like the way reason through that.
That's good. I expect there'll be some deals sooner rather
than later. Tonight's a big night. Ottawa plays at the Rangers.
Both those teams are scuffling. If one of who never
loses is somebody who's gonna win, somebody's gonna lose. I
would expect both those teams to be proactive because they're
nowhere near where they thought they'd be. If Seattle goes
(27:19):
into Jersey and beat Jersey, all bets are off. Jusey
the disaster zone right now. And if you don't believe me,
watched the press conference that Tommy Fitzgerald had this afternoon.
It's really tough, but natives are wrestless in New Jersey.
Philadelphia and Buffalo play tonight, and I would say both
those teams think they're a legitimate playoff contender who never loses,
but might be proactive in terms of trade. And Vegas
(27:41):
plays at LA. Again. We all have four games in
the league tonight, but if I'll were to lose this game,
I think there's gonna be Kenny Holland will have to
do something because they do not want ense Colpatar to
miss the playoffs in his last year in the NHL.
So tonight's a big night in the league. Mark and
I think you're gonna see general managers getting more proactive
(28:01):
than ever especially if you know some the right teams
are the wrong teams, depending on how you look at it.
Speaker 2 (28:07):
Moves tonight, Pierre.
Speaker 1 (28:08):
Before we wrap up, one guy I talked about earlier
in the week just got his number top retired in Detroit,
Sergei Federof and I marveled at how good he was,
And honestly, I don't think we appreciate him enough. I
think he's probably further up the list of best of
all time than a lot of people would think.
Speaker 4 (28:26):
Absolutely. The biggest thing about him is he could play
it any way you want. He want to play a
skill game, he could do that. You want to play
a fast game, he could do that. You want to
play a defensive, shutdown game, he could do that. Scotty
Bowman played him on defense in NHL games, and Scotty
thought he could be a forty to forty five minute
a game player. He really did. He was great on
(28:46):
the penalty, was great on the power play. He was
a faceoff specialist as well at eight in games. He
was a spectacular talent.
Speaker 1 (28:54):
Spectacular talent, Pierre is always great stuff. Enjoy the hockey,
Like you said, a lot of big games tonight. So
let's get to our TVs and we'll talk to you
next week.
Speaker 4 (29:03):
Thank you, my friend.
Speaker 2 (29:03):
Take care. That's the great pair MacGuire.
Speaker 1 (29:05):
He's brought to us by Always Say Flagging and traffic Control.
Speaker 2 (29:10):
Just around the corner.
Speaker 1 (29:13):
Some interesting things said about Tom Win leaving Bill Carro.
Speaker 2 (29:17):
It's a pretty good SoundBite. We'll get to that at
some point.
Speaker 1 (29:19):
And we got that funny SoundBite from the Ravens owner
who found out while talking to the medium that Tom
Win had stepped down.
Speaker 2 (29:27):
I'm Mark Mad one oh five nine The X.
Speaker 7 (29:29):
It's the Woody Show weekday mornings at six oh I
