Speaker 1 (00:00):
Happy, but they have no real impact. Contempt for the audience.
That's what killed Dennis Day joining me out in talk hockey.
He also has contempt for the audience, like I doing it.
Apparently Dennis Day, he is Josh Shoey. Josh. If you
had to say right now, will Gino be back or not?
(00:21):
What's your best guess?
Speaker 2 (00:24):
You know it?
Speaker 3 (00:24):
Frank, I hate to say fifty to fifty because that
makes for bad radio. So I will say this. I've
been under the impression for a year that he wasn't
coming back. I don't think Kyle do this wants to
bring him back, so maybe I'll lean in that your action,
but I wouldn't be shocked if he returns. I do
(00:45):
think Malcolm had a much better season than anybody could
have imagined him.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
Having last season.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
But I also know that he's not part of Kyle's
master plan, whatever that may be, to make the Penguins
a championship contender as soon as possible. So I think
if Kyle does sign him, that will perhaps be a
sign that he has caved a little bit, whether it
be the fans wanting it back, Sid wanting him back,
whoever else wanting him back.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
I still don't think it's Kyle's idea.
Speaker 1 (01:12):
Are Geno's people and Duba's currently talking.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
I talked with Geno's people a couple of days ago,
and at that point they had not Although I don't
you know, some people heard that and said, oh, that's
that sounds bad for Gino.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
I don't think so.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
I think Kyle was busy with some other stuff when
the season ended, and we saw it today in a
couple of signings.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
So Gino's representatives.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
Told me that, you know, we're gonna give Kyle a
few days, you know, let him, you know, do what
he needs to do, and then we're going to approach
him and try to sit down and talk. And I
do think that will happen sooner rather than later. And
a note Mark, Kyle is meeting with the media next Tuesday,
so I don't know if he wants to have something
(01:58):
done by then or not. That I I promise you
that's the first question. He's going to receive it as
postseason press conference. If there hasn't been any Maulkin news
at that point, what will.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
The dressing room's reaction be if Malkin isn't back and
specifically see it, because I told the story earlier how
they went on strike for eight games when Jake got traded.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
Essentially, Yeah, I mean I know that Sid and Crystal
Tang wouldn't be happy.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
You know.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
That doesn't mean they would, you know, go out of
their way to ruin things in the locker.
Speaker 1 (02:27):
Room, but would it would It would trickle down even
to the young guys. The unhappiness would trickle down. Locker
rooms are like that when guys like Sit and Tanger
are in them.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
Yeah, it wouldn't go over well. I mean Gino much
much like Gino is popular with the fans, he's always
been a pretty darn popular guy with his teammates. That
that's that's undeniable, and they they want to keep the
band together.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
They talk about.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
It openly if you ask them that that's the way
they are. That they're very much in line with the
fan base. I don't know that it's in line with
what Kyle Dubis wants. Frankly, for that matter, Mark, you know,
four years ago, like Ron Hextall, from everything I've been told,
did not want to bring back Crystal Tang or of
Ginney Malkin.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
And you know he.
Speaker 3 (03:10):
Felt some pressure from above and from other people in
the organization and he did it.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
I had just taken over FSG. Didn't want to be the.
Speaker 3 (03:18):
Bad guy, and I suspect maybe the Hawkmit family doesn't
want to be either. I know that the Penguin sale
isn't official official.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
But it's going to be at some point in the
off season.
Speaker 3 (03:28):
And you know, historically speaking, it's not really great for
new owners to ride into town and then immediately vanish
one of the most popular players in franchise history, regardless
of his age.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
And Gino even brought that up. It was interesting in Philadelphia.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
We asked him, like, hey, this could be your last
game whatever, and he said, well, I want to come back,
and Kyle knows that. He says, but it's up to Kyle.
And then Gino paused and he said, maybe it's up
to the new owners too. I don't know if that
was Geno playing some psychological games there or not, but
he raised a fair point.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
Probably will have some say in it.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
Well, Josh, as you know, if this decision was made
in a vacuum, I would offer to drive Geno back
to Magnetic Gorsk, but but I feel like they have
no choice but to bring him back. It's not a
hill worth dying on. It would be bad for the room,
bad for the fans, bad for the new owner. There's
just too many arguments against letting him walk that might
(04:22):
have very little to do with hockey, but that's how
it is.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
No, I don't disagree with that, and we hear the
same old stuff, and it's true, like he wouldn't really
be blocking anyone, like if Billy Coyven it doesn't get
as much ice time, that's not the end.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Of the world.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
And he did put off better than a point per
game last season's.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
Yeah, but it'd block Kindle and or China kough off
the first power play.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Probably, And that's a decision Dan Music is gonna have
to make, and it won't be an easy one. But
I know there are a lot of reasons to bring
him back. What I always say to this though, and
this is something maybe Kyle can.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
Shed some light on this next week when he talks.
Maybe he won't want to. I don't know, but.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
I've been saying for a while like we don't know
the specifics of exactly what Kyle wants to do this summer,
how aggressive he wants to be, how if he wants
to go big name hunting has.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
A space, but the unrestricted free agents you're old and
not very good.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
Frankly, that's a problem. It absolutely is. So that means
he's probably going to try to make a significant trade
or two. So Malcolm's not blocking anyone right now.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
No doubt.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
I don't know that he would or wouldn't be if
Kyle can make the moves he wants to make. If
I had to bet, I bet Kyle would really love
to not have to make up his mind on Malkin
until the middle of July, because then he would really
have a better idea of what his roster would shape.
He will be shaping up for next season, But that's
a couple of months from now, and I don't know
if anybody on either side wants to deal with the
(05:49):
drama for a couple of months. We know what's going
on in the Steelers headquarters right now.
Speaker 1 (05:53):
So breaking news, Josh I am told that Aaron Rodgers
and Havefgetti Malkin are both on a plane headed for Pittsburgh.
Just incredible breaking news. We're talking to Josh Howey of
The Athletic here on the Mark Madden Show, uh duer
and solely off both re up twenty six and twenty
five years old, respectively. I like it. I think they're
(06:15):
both solid role players.
Speaker 3 (06:17):
Oh yeah, Doer, like you said, he's only twenty six.
That's a big thing with him, and from the day
the Penguins acquired him, it's just been a good fit.
He's been very good in Pittsburgh. My favorite thing about
Doer like he understands what a fourth liner is supposed
to play like, and the Penguins haven't had enough guys
like that over the years. There's nothing fancy or East
(06:37):
West about his game. He's a very simple hockey player.
He's also a very effective one, and I'll be honest,
given the season he had, I'm not so sure he
couldn't have gotten more than two and a quarter a
year on the open market. I think that's a pretty
nice piece of business from Kyle Dubas. And to keep
those two with Blazatte and Doer on the fourth line,
I don't think a Chari's coming back, and at thirty
(06:59):
four he probably shouldn't, but to have those two kind
of stabilizing the fourth line, and next year maybe it's
Avery Hayes, maybe somebody else with them will see that's
a pretty.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
Nice foundation for that line.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
So I really like that signing quite a bit, and
I'm surprised that it happened as quickly as it did.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
Bill zon and joined Wilkes now that his junior season's up.
One of the first round draft picks from last year.
How close is he the NHL?
Speaker 3 (07:23):
I know they like him far and you know, we
heard so often this season about Will Horcoff, the other
third round pick along with Kendall and Zarniro who yeah, yeah,
thank you, And he really lit it up at the
University of Michigan this season, and obviously the Penguins really
like him. But from everyone I've talked to in the organization,
(07:43):
they like Zon and even more. And he was considered
even more than kindled by some people as the most
can't miss NHL player, like with the highest floor. He
plays a very point A to point B, straightforward kind
of game. There's a real belief that he could be
at worst, he's going to be a really good third
line center, that kind of a player. How far is he?
(08:06):
I don't know that he or Horcoff will be ready
next season. I would think the season after that, absolutely,
But I can tell you this is a player that
Penguins really like. The only thing that slowed him down
he had a lot of injuries this past season, which
may have put him behind schedule a little bit.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
But he's the guy.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
That often doesn't go talked about enough. I don't think
among Penguins fans talking about their prospects. You talk with
people in the organization, their eyes light up when you
bring up his name.
Speaker 1 (08:32):
The goaltending next year is Morris Shoff, and Shiloff's correct.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
They won't deviate from that notion. I have to think
that's the case. You can get she lobs for pretty cheap.
As a researched free agent. I think he showed something,
especially in the playoffs. I think I'd be very surprised
if it's not those two. Even though Blumquist should not
be forgotten about, he is a legitimate prospect that he
does not have neuro shops upside, and I don't.
Speaker 1 (08:56):
Want to de facto rookies in there. I wouldn't want
more a shop in blod Twist. I would want not.
The Chilloffs is a steadying influence, especially when it goes
to a shootout. Yeah, but do you think morishof will
be the number one next year. Do you think there'll
be a rotation early? How do you think? Or does
that depend on what happens even between now and then,
Like in these playoffs.
Speaker 3 (09:18):
Boy, if I had to look into a crystal ball,
assuming it's those two guys, I bet you any money
Dan Muse does the whole fifty to fifty thing to
start the season that way, Miroshov's playing enough. You don't
want him up in the NHL and playing you once
every ten days and maybe after a month or two,
may the best man win and that kind of becomes
the number one guy. But I know there's an expectation
(09:40):
in the organization that sooner or rather than later, Miroshav.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
Is going to be that guy.
Speaker 3 (09:46):
And he is off to a pretty darn good start
in the playoffs. Wolkesbury's up to one on Hershey in
their first round series. He's played quite well. From everything
I've heard, everybody loves this guy that they really I'm
not gonna say he's going to be a superstar goalie
at the NHL level.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
I'm not going to throw that on him. We don't
know that, but there's a lot.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
Of people in the organization who think he has more
upside than she loves and that he's going to be
a number one goaltender. And I can tell you just
from getting to know him a little bit, Mark, he
is unbelievably mature and professional. Like you just you talk
to him for five minutes and you say to yourself, Yeah,
that this kid gets it.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
He's going places.
Speaker 1 (10:23):
Are they going to make a blockbuster your trade? You
alluded to a possible attempt before, but I don't since
that's possible, I don't think they have enough to trade back,
so they'll get on bid for a big timer.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
He's gonna make trades, whether it's a blockbuster or not.
I don't know about that. I know the name Jason
Robertson has been mentioned, and I brought him up because
I've had people like come to me in the organization
to say, man, is Kyle love Jason Robertson, Like that's
the one guy he would just love to get his
hands on.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
But at what price? That that's the problem.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
You don't want to destroy the you know, the rebuilding
that you've done the last couple of years just for
one player, even one as good as Robertson. So I
don't know that they'll be able to do something like that,
but Mark, I think he wants to.
Speaker 2 (11:08):
I don't.
Speaker 3 (11:09):
I don't have the sense that Kyle wants to take
a big, huge step back next season and get a
top five pick. I don't think that's his mindset, and
I think that he thinks as long as it is here,
that's not going to happen anyway. He wants to get
a young star, but the problem with get any young
star is you have to give up so much. So
I don't know how he'll pull it off, but I
(11:32):
will say he's pulled off a couple of unbelievable deals
in the last six months that I don't think anybody
saw coming. So we'll see if he.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
Can do it or not, but it's certainly not going
to be easy.
Speaker 1 (11:43):
Is sid going to extend this summer? He has one
year left on his deal, but he doesn't extend. It
gets kind of awkward real quick.
Speaker 2 (11:50):
It does.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
We asked them after the season, how much longer you
want to play? And he said, at this stage is
kind of a year by year thing for him. So
that makes me wonder if he's not going to or
if he does extend, maybe it's only a year. I
don't know he hasn't given much indication, but I don't
get to since next season will be his last in
the NHL, so long as he stays healthy, I really
think he'll play at least one more year after next season.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
Yeah, but it's gonna be in Pittsburgh for sure, right
and with the Malkin uncertain You can understand me.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
Asking, I can, but I yeah, I mean we've always
thought that. I think the success they had this season,
even though I know the playoffs were disappointing, I really
think that reassured him that Kyle Duvis really does know
what he's doing and this team is moving in a
proper direction. And I also think he really liked playing
for Dan News. Remember Crosby, Malcolm Latang. None of them
(12:42):
wanted Mike Sullivan to go. They are fiercely loyal to him,
and they weren't sure how it was going to go
with MWS. But I think everybody, including said really like
playing for him, and I think that goes a long way.
Speaker 1 (12:52):
You know what helped Malcolms he has to coming back.
If he smiled a little bit. The people want to
love you, that's right, that's Josh Owey. I'm Mark Mahadden
one oh five not The x X idiots are often happy,
but they have no real impact in this world, unless,
of course, they're good enough to make the NFL the
(13:13):
ex I've got a bunch of crazy craft to talk
about the rest of this show. If you're just tuning in.
Rogers is apparently headed to Pittsburgh tomorrow. We'll see if
they work it out, if he is officially again a
Steeler by day's end. We're talking about all the geno discussion,
and as I keep saying, I see no option but
(13:36):
to keep them. The fans wanted, the captain wants at,
the room wants it, and the new owners won't want
to look bad. It may go against the grand plan,
but I think the Penguins got to do that. Skenes
was unhittable last night. He might be already one of
the best pitchers ever. There might be a different level
that nobody's ever reached before. The he's capable of. Tired's
(14:00):
currently tied one one in Arizona. Brandon Law hit another
home run, and he pimps every home run. He showboats
big time, like waves the dugout, you know, pumps his fist.
I'd drill him. I would drill him. He has every
right to do what he likes, and I have every
right to drill him. Let's go down to Dino velvet. Dino,
(14:21):
you're only double.
Speaker 4 (14:22):
M oh, hey, Mark, you let me take your money, bow,
let me take your picture.
Speaker 1 (14:27):
I would give you money to drill Brandon Law. But
go ahead, Dino. What's up? Hey?
Speaker 4 (14:31):
So you know it turns out now that you know,
the head coach may have had an affair while he
was married and probably had a baby with the person too.
Speaker 1 (14:42):
Well, we don't know. We don't know that. That's a
bit too accusatory. I think I know we're headed with this,
so tread lightly.
Speaker 4 (14:50):
All right, Yeah, but enough about coach t So let's
talk about.
Speaker 1 (14:56):
Gee. I didn't see that coming. What do you got,
Aaron Rodgers?
Speaker 4 (15:01):
I'm so sick of this. I mean, we've been through
this last year. We know how this is, this story ends.
I mean, I don't care if they go four and thirteen.
I want to try the young guys. If you got
to keep you know, if you got to keep the backup,
you know, a veteran backup, that's fine.
Speaker 1 (15:18):
But here's the best case scenario. And I hate to
sound like like crappy. But the best scenario would be
if Rogers got hurt about four games in and the
switchover was organic and and nobody could get I don't
know that sounds dumb, but it wouldn't bother me at all,
not shing that hurts too.
Speaker 4 (15:36):
Bad, and we got to pull the bandage off, we
got a new coach. Let's just you know, it is
what it is. I mean, we've been in the middle
so long. I don't like, look at New England what
they did. You know, they had a bad year or
two and now they're back at it.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
I mean that's well, No, let's look at what the
Steelers have done, Dino. The year they went one in thirteen,
they drafted Bradshaw. The year they went six and ten
they drafted Bit. Had they not had those years, would
be stuck on zero Lombardi zero because, as I keep saying,
and nobody wants to look at it like it is
in the game football like it is. It's not about
(16:12):
me and Joe Green and Troy Polamalu, as valuable as
both those guys were. It's about quarterbacks without Bradshawn Ben
zero super bowls in Pittsburgh, Thank you, for the call
I saw. I'm gonna talk about that Shallow Mett movie.
I saw Marty Supreme, which was good, but I didn't
know he was dating Kylie Jenner, and I guess they
(16:35):
sit at a canoodle at courtside for the Knicks games.
Kylie Jenner look up her dating history. Shallo Met will
be lucky that she doesn't call him by everybody's name. Uh,
she's a girl with a certain zest for living is
a nice way to put it. She's hot, she's rich. Actually,
(16:56):
I'm coming around to shallow Met's viewpoint on this. Okay,
Villa takes the lead to one on aggregate Pirates one one.

The X at one oh five nine.
Speaker 1 (18:49):
A lot of breaking news or not with the Steelers
depends on your point of view, joining us not to
set everything straight. He covers the team for the Post Gazette.
Always great to speak with, Jerry Dulac. Jerry is Aaron
Rodgers on his way to Pittsburgh, because I feel like
we're tracking Santa's slay on Christmas Eve.
Speaker 5 (19:07):
Mark, I'm curious to see, you know, in the old days,
and then that's not that long ago, I think all
the camera crews and probably some reporters would rush on
to the airport and wait at the gate. Well, of
course now you can't wait at any gate, for you
can't even get to a gate. So the next closest
thing they do is all the camera crews will be
(19:28):
stationed along the walking trail on the south side waiting
for a black vehicle, you know, some SUV or something
to pull up, probably tomorrow with Aaron Rodgers, So he's
supposed to be in. Wouldn't be surprised if it was tonight,
but I think it's supposed to be supposed to be tomorrow.
(19:51):
Mark and so we shall see.
Speaker 1 (19:53):
Jerry, I'll get some advice to TV stations, radio stations,
print media whatever, by the cheapest airline ticket poss and
take a camp quarter.
Speaker 5 (20:03):
There you go. You know the other thing too, Mark,
is stars these days typically don't fly commercial. They typically fly,
you know, whether the team sends a private playing form
or they chartered one themselves, which of course Aaron Rodgers
and maybe he has a deal for that. So when
you get the when you get the high priced multi millionaires,
(20:23):
they're not flying commercial anyhow. So I'm not sure that
Aaron Rodgers would be calling Jet Blue and booking a
flight to Pittsburgh.
Speaker 1 (20:31):
How's this work out? He's gonna play, right? I think
some dot might have seeped in recently, but this appears
to be the final chapter, and that it concludes with
him playing.
Speaker 5 (20:40):
Mark. You've heard me say before. The Steelers have always
believed that he was coming, that he was coming back
to play, and so to me, this is just well,
I say, this is just the it's a foregone conclusion
that that's going to happen. Of course, there's always the
possibility that out of respect, he could fly in to
say face to face, you know what, I don't want
(21:02):
to play anymore, so I guess that's a possibility. But
the Steelers don't expect that. Look, they talked to him,
Mike McCarthy talks to him all the time. I don't
think they're just talking, you know, about the weather and
how the Rangers are doing. I'm sure a lot of
it is okay, not so much when are you coming?
When are you coming? But a lot of it has
to do or at least some of it, of course,
(21:24):
about playing football. So I just don't you know, they
have always believed that he's coming back, you know, I
was told that he's not cleaned out his locker. I
don't know that that's any big indication, but I think
it does indicate that, you know, in some form, he
has always thought he was coming back, too. So I
(21:44):
don't think it's going to be any great surprise when
if he does reach an agreement. And Mike Mark I
was also told all along it's never been about money.
That's not an issue. It's not like that's a contractual hangar.
So it's just a matter of waiting on him, and
lord knows, they've been waiting long enough.
Speaker 1 (22:05):
Jerry, what Rangers Texas new York or Glasgow.
Speaker 5 (22:08):
I meant the New York Rangers, Mark, because of your
hockey uh preference.
Speaker 1 (22:15):
Well, I would assume that Big Mike would talk about penguins.
I think Rogers might think hockey's beneath him. Now, what
are your expectations if he does play? What's the ceiling?
Because that's what I frankly don't get about bringing him back.
I don't think the ceiling's high enough to justify it.
Speaker 5 (22:30):
Well, Mark, you know, I guess that's what we're going
to find out, and and and you might be right,
but I know this. They feel the ceiling for twenty
twenty six is greater with him than it is for
two unproven rookies, if you will, and you know, even
Mason Rudolph. So you know, after going out and getting
(22:52):
Michael Pittman and then signing Rico Dowdell and and you know,
making moves like that, you know, and and then drafting
Jeremy ben on the second round, and you know, seven
seven of the ten draft picks or offensive players. There's
no question they're trying to load up on offense as
much as they can and do what they can. I
(23:12):
don't want to say to help Aaron Rodgers, but just
you know, assist in that whole process figuring he's going
to be the quarterback. And so you know, they won
a division title last year. Look, we all know about
not winning playoff games, but five of the last six
years in the playoffs. They're not that far away. Mark,
Not that I think they have a super Bowl roster
or that they're a super Bowl team, but they get there.
(23:35):
They just have to take the next step. And they
feel for twenty twenty six, because of so much uncertainty
with their other quarterbacks, at least the two young guys,
it easily presents the best best ceiling for them, no question.
Speaker 1 (23:48):
We're talking to Jerry Dulac at the Post Gazette here
on the Mark Madden Show. Jerry, what's your level of
faith like in Howard and Aller? Not necessarily you know,
this season, obviously, but in the long run, I think
Hours by far the better prospect. But Howard seems to
people's choice.
Speaker 5 (24:07):
You know, Mark, I agree with you. Drew Aller is
the better prospect merely from the fact that you know
he went three rounds higher. Obviously, he is a big
guy with a powerful arm who can make all the
throws has some amount of escapability, you know. I mean,
he's not Russell Wilson in this day, but you know
(24:28):
he can move. And so I think from that standpoint,
the problem is, and I think this has a lot
to do with why Drew Waller's stock dropped him out
of the first round and probably even the second round,
is you look at his performances in big games, and
all you have to do is watch him in big
games and see, you know, how poorly he played. He
(24:51):
was one in seven, one in seven against top ten
ranked teams in his career, and the bigger the game,
the worse he played. And Mark, you can't teach that
to me. That's that's reflective of something else. And so
whereas you look at Will Howard, you know, you know
to you know, the contrary is how well he played
(25:12):
in big games, you know, winning the national championship. His
best games at the highest state were in the biggest
games in the proceeds team Jerry Oh, Mark, that is
no question about it. But you know, I don't think
I don't think Drew Olive was playing with Carnegie Mellon players.
So you know, your quarterback, your quarterback kind of leads
(25:32):
you so there's no question he was playing with a
good team. That's of course, that's the Troy Aikman argument
about being in the Hall of Fame. He won three
Super Bowls and everybody goes, yeah, well look who he's
playing with. Well, yeah, he's still got those guys the
ball and they still won. So you know, you hear
that argument about Terry bradshawt to a degree too, let's
face it. So I don't I mean, I get that,
(25:54):
but you know, Howard does not have the miserables that
Drew Allier. And I'm not talking about size but just
everything else. But he might have that that that winning
character more so than maybe Drew Roller. And so that's
kind of how I look at it. We're gonna find out.
Speaker 1 (26:13):
Here's my weird thing about Rogers coming back. Nobody's doting
his dile nobody's doting his resume. He absolutely will not
take a hit to make a play. He won't take
a hit, period, And I find that to be limiting
on so many levels.
Speaker 5 (26:28):
Well, you know, Mark, I hear you. You know what
Manning did the same thing later in their careers. You know,
they take Peyton Manning was the king of turtling I
don't think anybody criticized him for it. The other thing, too, Mark,
is those teams they only carried one backup quarterback, and
(26:48):
so they because they just figured first of all, their
durability but also their doorability was because they didn't take
big hits like that. They didn't just stand up there,
stand in there and get pummeled the way we see
Joe Burrow do it, which is just is very impressive.
Speaker 1 (27:03):
Of course, you know that's actually the other extreme.
Speaker 5 (27:05):
I'm not sure I like either, right, But those were
also younger quarterbacks, and so you know, Aaron Rodgers at
forty two. You know, I'm not gonna sit here and
pretend to know what he did in his younger days
because I don't know. I didn't see him enough. But
I will say this, the training people and the medical
people have told me how tough, and the coaches too,
(27:28):
how tough this guy is. And so is he just
going to stand in there and take a large hit.
Maybe not, But you know he's not someone who's just
shying away from everything either. So I have no problem
with the way he plays in that regard.
Speaker 1 (27:43):
Well, the Steelers keep four quarterbacks if it comes to that,
How will they get around, though, what will they do then?
Speaker 5 (27:49):
Yeah? I don't know, Mark. I mean, obviously injuries can
take take care of that. You know, a hang nail
can get a guy on IR. But there's no way
are going to keep four quarterbacks on a fifty three
man roster. That's just that's Some teams don't even keep three,
you know, I don't know. I should go check the number,
but I would be willing less than half the league
(28:11):
keeps three quarterbacks. Steelers have always kept three quarterbacks because
they believe it's the most important position on the team
and you better have guys ready to play instead of
having to go, you know, out on the street to
go find a quarterback. And so now maybe Mike McCarthy,
I don't know what his past was, maybe he feels differently,
but I don't know that that decision will be made
(28:33):
by Mike McCarthy. To be honest, It's what the Steelers
have always done. But I just can't see them keeping
fourd To me, that's pointless.
Speaker 1 (28:42):
Is there any way they would cut Rudolph and have
two guys who have never taken a NFL snap as Rogers'
backup at him being forty two and in the corresponding
risk to injury.
Speaker 5 (28:56):
I was going to say, Mark, especially at age forty two,
what that's going to depend on the preseason they're going
to see. That's the only way that's going to happen.
If they see in the preseason and those two guys,
Will Howard and Drew Aller are going to play Mason Rudolph,
he might take five snaps in the preseason, I bet,
because they don't need to see anything about him. But
(29:18):
they want to evaluate these two guys. So if they
see something in the preseason from one of them, or
even both of them, but one of them in particular,
to really open their eyes, then they sit there and think, Okay,
we you know, we're not so uncomfortable with this guy.
And I'll give you a small, small example, a little different,
but very similar. When Mason Rudolph was drafted in what
(29:40):
twenty and eighteen, you know, Joshua Dobbs came in I
think the year before Landry Jones was the backup quarterback.
Joshua Dobbs played so well that year in the preseason
that the Steelers cut Landry Jones, who was a fourth
round pick a couple of years earlier. But he was
Ben's back up, and they cut Landry Jones because Joshua
(30:02):
Dobbs played so well and Mason Rudolph was unproven. So
now that was Mike Tomlin. I know, but we have
seen it to some degree, so not only would it
would it not shock me, we've also kind of seen
it before here. You know what, however, many years ago,
not even ten.
Speaker 1 (30:19):
Years ago, Jerry up, what will the offensive line look
like left or right for Week one? And if that's
impossible to answer, just give it a whirl.
Speaker 5 (30:29):
Well, you know, some of that is going to depend
obviously on Broderick Jones. But just my understanding is, now
that's September, that started training camps a whole nother story.
Do I think he's going to be ready for the
started training camp? I don't think the Steelers think he's
going to be ready for the started training camp. You know,
things were progressing okay, but I don't think they've been
(30:51):
progressing correspondingly fast enough to think that. You know, he
could be back by the started training camp, but they
haven't ruled that out. So if it's not, he I'm
still gonna think at this point, you know, it's going
to be one of one of the other two one
of the other two tackles on the left side, Troy
Fat on the right side, because I don't think maxi
(31:15):
uh Ianachure is probably advanced enough to be a starter,
although I think he's going to be very good. I
think he's pretty good now, and so I don't see
them moving Troy Ftanu. That of course, is the other option,
moving him to left tackle and and having Max on
the right side. And no, I know I haven't specifically
(31:38):
answered your question because so much, so much that depends
on Broderick Jones. But right now, right now, I'm I'm
I'm gonna sit here and think that Broderick Jones could
be back and and that that could solve some of
the concern that they have on the offensive and Troy
staying at right tackle.
Speaker 1 (31:57):
I will say this, Gary, and I I agree with
I would leave time what right tackle. I don't want
to do to him what they did to Jones by
flipping them back and forth. But if I on it,
Shore doesn't play right away, that seems like, at a
glance for optics, a really bad first round pick when
you have a forty two year old quarterback and you're
trying to win now.
Speaker 5 (32:18):
And not only that mark to use your point about
winning now, you know, to me, you're not a super
Bowl team. You're or not a super Bowl finalist or
a conference champion. Your number one pick better come in
and play, especially in this day and age where they
need to find out about these guys. But your number
(32:40):
one pick to me has to come in and play.
And so if he doesn't, then you know, that kind
of defines your whole draft class. And that's been the problem.
If you look at the Steelers drafts, while they've been
really good the last three years, overall, you know they
haven't drafted a Pro Bowl player since TJ. Watt, and
(33:01):
you could go after him, you could go back a
couple more years before that, and so you better now.
Maybe they'll have one in five time, or some day
maybe they'll have one in Zach Frazier. But you have
to find those dynamic players and you have to get
them on the first round and they have to be guys. Again,
unless you have a super Bowl roster, those guys better
come in and play. So if he doesn't, then yeah,
(33:23):
you can you can sit there and kind of you know,
base your assumption or or what your evaluation of what
you think the draft grade is and not before wrong
to think Okay, maybe it wasn't so good.
Speaker 1 (33:37):
Jerry, great stuff. As always, if you need a ride
of the airport, give me a call. I'm on Rogers watch.
Speaker 5 (33:42):
Well well, Mark, if you're going to position yourself down
along the walking trail on the south side, let me know.
I'll come by and say.
Speaker 1 (33:48):
Hello, that's Terry Due like I'm Mark Madden. Now it's
time to ask. And I'm not going to the airport
or the walking trail, but now it's time to ask
Mark Anything. Eight three three four one two WSDX that's
a three three four one two w XDX. Or leave
a talkback clicking on the microphone icon at the iHeartMedia

Speaker 3 (34:10):
The X time now to send in your questions for
Ask Mark Anything.
Speaker 1 (34:15):
Use the talk back mike on your free iHeartRadio app

Speaker 2 (34:24):
Up Your Table is a super genius Mark Madden.
Speaker 1 (34:26):
Let's face it, You've always been in love with me
and this is just your moment of clarity. Oh I
know so The X.
Speaker 2 (34:33):
At one O five nine.
Speaker 1 (34:38):
An Ask Mark Anything brought to us by People's Natural Gas,
People's an essentially utilities companies safe reliable natural gas energy,
People's Hyphengas dot Com. I can't get over Rogers and
his rap to Pittsburgh be in track like it's Santa
(35:01):
on Christmas Eve. I can't believe they're bringing them back.
I can't believe they see anything more than a meager upside.
I can't believe they don't see that they're wasting a year.
But that's how it's going to turn out, and when
it does, I'll be sure to point it out. Let's
go to mister Lillo. Mister Lillo, you're on with double.
Speaker 5 (35:18):
M Hey, Mark Ayden.
Speaker 1 (35:21):
Great?
Speaker 5 (35:22):
What happened to Bayern Munich?
Speaker 2 (35:24):
Yesterday?
Speaker 1 (35:26):
They drew one one with Paris and Paris goes to
the final six to five on aggregate. I mean, did
you think Byron was going to kill them?
Speaker 4 (35:35):
No? But it's interesting.
Speaker 5 (35:37):
I mean, it wasn't to me a handball. It looked
like a handball. But they didn't play well. Byron didn't
play well.
Speaker 6 (35:44):
No.
Speaker 1 (35:45):
Well, I mean, when when you play in a league
where you only have to play four or five good
games a season and then Champions League two, you're not
always going to be firing on all cylinders, although the
same description could apply to Paris as well.
Speaker 5 (35:58):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (35:59):
I think Paris is going to kill Arsenal in the final,
but then again, Arsenal can conniict that one they'll win.
I give them more than a small chance. Let's go
to a talkback question for you.
Speaker 5 (36:11):
What do depends do for third line center Crosby one
kindle two? Do they stick with Novak or do they
trade for.
Speaker 2 (36:20):
Like a Shane Right.
Speaker 1 (36:22):
I wouldn't mind seeing him in trade for Shane Wright,
who got picked in the first run by Seattle a
few years back but has never turned out like they hoped.
I know he's been on Dubas's radar, but I would
think right now the plan would be to have Tommy
Novak be the third line center. I think he might
wind up at wing somewhere. By the way, you can
tell the IHF World Championships this year not quite the
(36:47):
same impact in an Olympic year. Nowhere close representing Team
USA will be Tommy Novak and Connor Clifton, and just
looking down the roster, the only holdover from the Olympics
going to the World Championships as Matthew Kuchuk and I
can't imagine why he would do that except due to injury.
He played very little this year. Maybe he just wants
(37:08):
to keep getting back into hockey shape. Uh, let's go
another talkback.
Speaker 6 (37:15):
Hey, Mark, should the Steelers change the sticks song they
play from renegade to grand illusion because they've been selling
us this win now illusion for years.
Speaker 1 (37:25):
I've always suggested changing it to fooling yourself, but grand
illusion works too.
Speaker 7 (37:31):
Let's go to a talkback, Hi, Mark, I want Rogers
to play so he can get hurt right away and
be out the rest of the season, and we can
move on to another quarterback thanks to me.
Speaker 1 (37:41):
That's the best case scenario. I'm not going to be
one of those guys who says I don't want to
see anybody get hurt. To be honest, it just doesn't
bother me as long as I don't know them. But yeah,
that's best case scenario. Rogers plays a little bit, gets
hurt and they move on, or they start out real
bad and he quote unquote gets hurt and they move on.
(38:02):
Let's go to one more talkback. Okay, we we lost
that one. Okay, Well, Nodd's time for Mark's book and
movie reviews. I saw Marty Supreme. Timothy Challomeant was brilliant.
He's fool proof, maybe the best actor out there now.
But it's an odd story. It's about this table tennis
(38:23):
champ loosely based on some guy from New York back
when Marty Reiser, but Bit Schallaman's character is a total grifter, lies, cheat, steals.
He abandons his girlfriend literally while she's in labor with
his child and has just been shot. And then he
(38:43):
comes back from overseas on one of his table tennis gambits,
sees his child and he cries, and it's implied that
he's somehow redempted. It's like a ninety second redemption, instant redemption.
My shall Im at Fandom duly noted I'm not buying it.
(39:05):
And now at the book club, I read Cameron Crowe's memoir.
Crowe was a legendary teenage rock writer wrote Fast Times
at Ridge one High, turned it into a movie, wrote
and directed Almost Famous, which was autobiographical, very close to
and inspired by his late mother, who was prayed by
(39:29):
the great Washington pa and eight of Francis McDormand in
the movie. There's a familiarity there for me, very close
to it, inspired by his mother, and of course, Cameron
Crow's big entrede to the big time was Jerry Maguire
(39:51):
was his but I loved him as a teenage rock
writer was writing for Rolling Stone. He was fifteen, got
all these great interviews, so jealous he got to interview
Jimmy Page Greg Alman. I didn't. There's still hope with
Jimmy though. It's a good, very emotional book, and it
got me to thinking what part of my career have
(40:13):
I enjoyed most? And you'll be surprised, because Cameron Crow
had a few very distinct careers as have I. The
most fun was wrestling, no question, on the road, part
of a team, one of the boys. Very rarely in
my life have I gotten to be one of the boys,
but I certainly did with WCW and like I said earlier,
(40:37):
rip Ted Turner, who signed my checks. But the favorite
part of my career was when I covered high school
sports for the Post Gazette because I made a difference
for people, young people that they remembered, appreciated that and
now remember forever. And I still have very close friends
(40:57):
I met covering high school sports, like Mark Bulger, who
played for West Virginia and the Rams. The quarterback Mike
and Phil Palomski, who played hockey from Mount Lebanon, went
on to play for Saint Lawrence, where Peer maguire was
an assistant coach. All this stuff I'm doing now is
disposable in one ear out the other. Delete, delete, delete,
(41:20):
That's just true, the endless quarterback talk. Who gives a
frig the world will little note nor long remember. But
the high school sports that coverage dealing with kids and
you know, giving them enjoyment and their parents and all
the people you dealt with people, then this is nameless.
(41:42):
This is faceless. This is disposable. Like, for example, would
I say all this crap about Aaron Rodgers if I
knew him? And the answer is absolutely yes, because I
find him deplorable. I'm Martin Madden one O five to nine.
