Speaker 2 (00:02):
Human so much to talk about with Pittsburgh Sports, Steelers
going to Paris.
Speaker 3 (00:17):
Schemes is lightening up.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
We don't know what's going down with Malkin here to
talk about all of it from the Sporting News. He's
pittsburgher Mike de Corsi, Mike, we got the Steeler fans
going to Paris. That seems incongruous, doesn't it. Pittsburgh's in Paris.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
They seem to fit a little better in Ireland with.
Speaker 4 (00:34):
All the with all the Brews that were available there,
with all the Guinness and such. It seems a little
bit different in Paris. But let me tell you, I am.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
The biggest Paris fan in the world.
Speaker 5 (00:47):
I've been there, I think three times, and if if
I had a spare few grand laying around, it might
be tempting. It's it's going to be an awesome experience
for the Steelers fans who get to go there.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
Yeah, but with Pittsburgh's there, it might be escargo f yourself. Now,
I gotta tuck. Paul Skeins, I hate hyperbole. I hate
christening goats like we tend to do very prematurely. But
as Paul Skins, the best pitcher ever. Again, I hate
that kind of hype, but that's what I see.
Speaker 4 (01:19):
Well, he can be.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
He is.
Speaker 4 (01:22):
He has begun his career at a level that I
don't think any pitcher ever has.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
Others have sort of warmed their right.
Speaker 6 (01:31):
Now.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
That's a good point, Mike, because I saw Doc Gooden,
I saw Vida Blue I know you did too, and
he's above even them at the start.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
Oh, I don't have any doubt about that.
Speaker 4 (01:40):
And of course Viida got hurt I think after his
early success, and and Doc had his issues, and so
Paul absolutely has to have good fortune, as I mentioned
a week ago. But you look at the best pictures
that have ever pitched, and they didn't start like this.
They start one, two, three with e ras at this
(02:03):
level and and with other stats that that he's putting.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
Up, you better win lost records.
Speaker 4 (02:10):
Yeah, maybe because pitching was different then, and he has
the advantage in the sense of they don't they don't
ride you as long. So maybe your I are your
excuse me, your e r A is a little bit
more attractive than it would have been if they asked
you to pitch.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
Yeah, but that said, if you pitched more, Mike, that
one bat inning can blow you up like that that
opening day at New York has done with skins.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
But is he already still under two?
Speaker 1 (02:35):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (02:36):
But I'm what I'm saying is like when Gibson and
those guys were pitching, you were kind of almost expected
to go nine if you're that level.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
That's true, and that's and that's not the case for him.
Speaker 4 (02:45):
So that might keep some of his stats a little
bit more attractive. But he's still doing things that others
haven't done, and so I think you have to put
him in a class where if he continues to do
these things, he as the opportunity to be that person
that like, he's never gonna get the five hundred and
eleven wins, right, but uh, what with what Maddox did
(03:09):
in the nineties, Uh, you can put you could put
schemes up there in a level where you're talking about
him with with sever And and Bob Feller and which.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
The question Mike Skemes obviously has the stuff, but a
lot of pictures do what sets him apart?
Speaker 1 (03:28):
Well? I think first of all, he's really competitive.
Speaker 4 (03:30):
I I love that about him, and I think that's
part of why he's great, is that it's not just
throwing the throwing the ball. It's not just I'll throw
it hard and whatever happens.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
I mean, he's really smart about it. He's really competitive.
Speaker 4 (03:45):
He understands how to set up hitters and then how
to how to get them out because he set the
he set the hitter up for what he wanted.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
He has a real grasp of that, of that art,
and I.
Speaker 4 (03:57):
Think it's probably more art than it is science because
you can't program it, so you have to be the
artist and put that and put those things into motion.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
And he's shown that he has the absolute ability to
do that.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
Here's what's odd.
Speaker 2 (04:13):
Only thirteen thousand showed up at PNC last night with
Skeen's pitching. I thought Pittsburgh was a baseball time and
that's such a great ballpark, But really they only show
up for fireworks, bobbleheads and weekends.
Speaker 4 (04:25):
Well, I think that's part of it. I think the
weather was pretty poor last night.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
It was okay Sken's pitching.
Speaker 4 (04:34):
Yeah, Well, I took a walk last night and I
think it probably wasn't so bad. It has been bad lately,
but I took a walk last night with my wife,
and I think that was a tolerable night for a
baseball game with Skeens pitching, it should have been better
than thirteen. But I remember when when Clemente was going
for hit number three thousand on a Saturday in September,
(04:55):
and I think the number was right around that.
Speaker 1 (04:57):
I was there, What my fault? You can't blame you.
Maybe that's the number of hardcore baseball.
Speaker 4 (05:06):
Fans that can continue to exist in Pittsburgh for the
last forty years or so fifty years. I'm not sure,
but I am a little surprised by that number, given
the fact that he is just Hey, at best case
scenario about this Mark is you don't even have to
invest four hours of your time, right, you know, it's
(05:27):
getting over relatively quickie quickly if he's pitching.
Speaker 3 (05:30):
Right. Tom said that just a little bit earlier.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
Mike, I'm not sure what desk about Aaron Rodgers And
was he here or wasn't he It's the height of silliness.
And the Steelers just gave their kickers seven million per
and don't know who their quarterback is.
Speaker 4 (05:44):
Come on, yeah, I don't understand why he's doing this
other than I'm convinced.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
Now that he loves the fact that every.
Speaker 4 (05:54):
Time I'm on with you and the other station is
twenty four to seven.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
And I think he loves it. I have to believe
he does.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
There's no other good reason to do it.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
Is there, except for gray except for ego gratification.
Speaker 4 (06:08):
Yes, there's this conversation that Charlie Batch is now starting
about money. They have to have been able to figure
that out by now that I don't think that's a
hold up.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
Well, well, okay, let me offer a disclaimer. I don't
think the money's a hold up either, and he has
enough money to last several lifetimes. But he is the
kind of guy who would drag it out based on
a perceived slight more.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
So than than just literally wanting the money.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
Yeah, I think that's true.
Speaker 4 (06:35):
I think, but but that just feeds into the whole
ego thing that we're talking about. It doesn't, It doesn't
divert It's just another symptom of wanting to have this drama.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
And I think that that's I think he lives for
this now because it was an easy thing.
Speaker 4 (06:49):
Like he's forty two, forty three years old, he's been
in the league now for a quarter of a century
or whatever the heck. It's been and so if he
doesn't want to show up to ot you, he doesn't
have to.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
Well, no, see I disagree.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
Emmanuel Acho said that he's cheating the game, and I
get that the quarterback's just supposed to be there. I mean,
what about these new what about these new receivers Mike
who don't get this time with him?
Speaker 3 (07:14):
You know, I what about Roman Wilson's seeing his career disintegrate.
Speaker 4 (07:18):
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that it's that
it's acceptable. I'm saying it would be tolerable by the Steelers.
Speaker 1 (07:25):
I'm not saying that.
Speaker 4 (07:27):
It's that it's something that he should he should feel
or believe.
Speaker 1 (07:31):
Look as I believe we talked about this a few weeks.
Speaker 4 (07:34):
Ago when I said, he is a professional football player,
and he is being paid basically as if he's a
fifty two week.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
Professional football player.
Speaker 4 (07:44):
He's not a sandlocked player getting paid five hundred dollars
a game.
Speaker 1 (07:47):
He's getting paid.
Speaker 4 (07:48):
If he he comes in twenty plus million dollars to play.
And so to ask you to show up for to
stand around and throw a few balls to your receivers
on what five days and then OTA's are three days
and that's pretty much it. That's not a lot to ask.
I am not excusing it. I'm just saying that's not
what's preventing this.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
You know what you know, you know what he does
to Mike and like the players say otherwise, but but
but they say what they say. He makes it impossible
to rally around him, like he doesn't give a crap
about them, Why should they give a crap about him?
Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how I would be if
I'm in that locker room, I'd be like, where is
this guy?
Speaker 4 (08:27):
Yeah, at this time of year, Yeah, you feel that,
But then the then the game start. And from every
indication that we got last year from multiple players, scores
of players, they were pretty happy with how he comported
himself once he got there. He connected with the other quarterbacks.
Mason Rudolph was very positive when I talked to him
(08:48):
last year at mini camp about how he conversed with him,
et cetera. And obviously we know about the Will Howard
connection and how he supposedly superseded whatever happened with Love
in Green Bay by really connecting to Will, So I
don't think that's a problem when he's there. I'm sure
it's it's a reason to resent him when he's not.
(09:10):
It's not good for the team. And you're right, I
mean they are. They would be much better, I don't
know how much better, but better if he's there and
he's working in Germany, uh, and he's working in the
free agents and all the different aspects of this now
because you don't have the same group of receivers you
did a year ago. And maybe if you're there in
(09:31):
training camp or excuse me in OTAs, maybe you can get.
Speaker 1 (09:34):
Roman Wilson to run the route the way you want him.
Speaker 2 (09:37):
Well, right, I feel bad for that kid because he's
having his career sabotage by the guy who's not there.
Not that he's Ben Swan, but we may never know. Mike,
you heard the Penguins GM talk dubis does it Sonny
like Malkin is coming back?
Speaker 3 (09:50):
He said they'd love to have him.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
But then he kept talking then and kind of betrayed
that a little bit with some of the things he said, Well.
Speaker 4 (09:57):
It feels like that that he'll come back, but only
on their terms. And I heard you and Tom talking
earlier about the one year.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
That's the most I would go.
Speaker 4 (10:07):
I might go if if If Gino is really committed
to two years, let's just say I would. I would
offer him one year in a club options if you
play as well this past this year as you played
the past year.
Speaker 1 (10:19):
We can think about it, but it's still our choice
at that way.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
That's that's a good idea.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
I'm not sure if NHL contracts could be constructed this way,
but I'd say, Okay, we'll give you one year and
the option gets picked up if you're at a point
per game.
Speaker 4 (10:32):
Yeah, exactly again, but only only to me. It's only
you can come back again if you're at that level
and you want to play.
Speaker 2 (10:42):
But you know what, Mike, I wouldn't even give him
that unless Sid extends. Because Sid's going into the last
year of his deal. I can't give Gino longer term
than SID. I just can't because I think Sid is
a lifer. But let's play worst case scenario and he's not.
I don't want to have Gino here in SID, and
that's very unlikely, but I want it to be impossible.
Speaker 1 (11:04):
Again.
Speaker 4 (11:04):
That's why if again, and I will acknowledge this as well.
I mean, there's so many different types of contracts out
there for me. I don't know if NHL contracts allow
an option year, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (11:15):
I will. I'll confess that, but you.
Speaker 2 (11:17):
Know what if saying it out lot, I don't. I
don't think they do.
Speaker 1 (11:20):
Well. There you go. So if that's at all, I.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
Don't think it's a performance based option.
Speaker 4 (11:25):
No, no, no, I'm just saying a club option if
that's available, either you know, our option, your option, or
mutual club. I would say, if we're the Penguins, we'll
take you back this year, and we will.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
We will have an option.
Speaker 4 (11:39):
That if we like what we see, we'll renew at
that figure that we are going to pay you this year,
and that's it. That But but it's our choice, it's
not going to be yours. And we'll let you know
so that we can give you a nice party on
the final day of the regular season and by then
you would know what SID was going to do relatively
to the stension option.
Speaker 2 (12:01):
Okay, it says here no team options, and again it
does say they're approved scenarios. I don't know it just
I wouldn't give him more than one year period. But
what's your hunch, Mike, I think they probably keep him.
It might be through Dupus's gritted teeth. But I'll say this,
if Malkin insists on two years, I think he's gone zo.
Speaker 4 (12:23):
Yeah and again and should but oh absolutely, and I'm
really insistent about this.
Speaker 1 (12:29):
I'm not buying this powerplay stuff anymore.
Speaker 4 (12:31):
Second second unit, fine, but I'm not buying that just
because he's on the team means he has to be
on the first power play. I'm not buying that at all.
You're the coach.
Speaker 3 (12:40):
From your lips to dan Us' ears, Mike, yes.
Speaker 4 (12:43):
You're the coach. You're in charge. It's not and and
he is only being brought back at you know, at
with some reservation.
Speaker 1 (12:54):
So no, he doesn't get to run that.
Speaker 4 (12:56):
Whatever works best, And if it's gonna Chinnikov out there
on that side of the ice, then absolutely do that.
And again, Chinnikov gives you the option of having a
harder shot, and man, it's a great shot. And it
also gives you the option of more speed at the
blue line when you know, to track back when something
(13:18):
goes wrong on a on a dumpback or whatever it
is that creates a short handed chance. At least you
have a significant, significantly faster skater going back and trying
to disrupt that opportunity.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
Mike is always great stuff. We will do it again
next week.
Speaker 1 (13:32):
I'll look forward to it. Mark, thank you.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
That's the great Mic the course, he always great having
him hunt brought to us by South Hills Kia. Up next,
we got some sign from Mark deroz to MLB Network
talking about schmes in his growing place in history. But
wait till you hear what Kendrick Perkins said about Europeans
taking over the NBA. It should get him fired. It
would get me fired. But that's just Perk. I guess
(13:58):
that's just around the corner. Tyler Kennedy him in the
hour at one oh five to nine.
Speaker 7 (14:02):
This playoff season, Power up your taste buds with a
Pineapple power play from Doe Daddy Brewery and one oh
five nine e.
Speaker 1 (14:08):
X heay more good with it onion rings Woo the
X at one o five nine.
Speaker 2 (14:17):
I can't get over that there were only thirteen K
at PNC Park last night the see Skeens pitch. That's
actually a more significant number. Thirteen K in attendance versus
Skeens is era, which is now under two on the season.
Talking of Skeens, here's Mark Deroza on the MLB Network
(14:39):
speaking about Skeens's growing spot in MLB history already.
Speaker 7 (14:44):
When I watch him right now, ooh good, I'm watching
what could potentially be one of the greatest right handed
pitchers of all time. I really believe that in my heart,
the process, the way he goes about it, he reminds
me of Roger Clemons. He reminds me of Nolan He
gets after it and nobody hits him low is dra
(15:04):
and first sixty four career starts.
Speaker 3 (15:08):
I agree.
Speaker 2 (15:08):
I think Skeen's already is one of the best pitchers
period of all time. And Skeens is way better than
Nolan Ryan. Nolan Ryan was a fastball and strike us
but he lost two hundred and ninety two games and
his career ERA was over three. And that's no insult
unless you compare it to where Paul Skeen's is headed.
(15:29):
Skeen's is a better pure pitcher than Nolan Ryan. Skeens
is Bob Gibson in nineteen sixty eight. Skeens has a
chance to be what nobody has. De Gram's career ra
is two point five seven. Skeens could go below that.
Here's xy Dot, Chris Carter and he's badly overrating Cam
(15:51):
Hayward of the Steelers.
Speaker 8 (15:54):
No, he's He's vitally important in the community. He's highly
important in the locker room, He's vially important in the
front office. He's valually important as far as the Steelers
in their legacy. Okay, he's not mean Joe Green, but
he is the next best thing to mean Joe Green,
and playing from the Steelers like he has been so
consistent on and off his overall character leadership.
Speaker 3 (16:16):
He's being rewarded for that.
Speaker 2 (16:19):
F fs, Cam Hayward is nowhere close to mean Joe
Green because me and Joe Green won playoff games and
rings and was the best defensive player of all time.
And the legacy thing, My god, what's Cam Hayward's legacy
really besides not winning playoff games? This is Pittsburgh six Lombardes.
(16:45):
I'm sixty five years old. I've seen the best of it,
and I won't glorify somebody who ain't part of the
best of it. If Cam Hayward had never played for
the Steelers, we wouldn't know the difference.
Speaker 3 (17:00):
This is weird.
Speaker 2 (17:01):
It's ex NBA player Kendrick Perkins on first take and
he says international players will take over the NBA for
years to come, and that might be true, but listen
to how Perk says it.
Speaker 9 (17:16):
The international players has completely taken over our league.
Speaker 10 (17:21):
It belongs to them.
Speaker 9 (17:23):
When you look at our last six to seven MVPs
SGA NICOLEA Jokic, Joel and d Nicola Jokic, Nicola Jokic,
Janni's ote Zakupo. And now we got this, Dude, it's
no hope for us to take over our league.
Speaker 1 (17:41):
In it.
Speaker 9 (17:42):
It's no hope whatsoever.
Speaker 10 (17:44):
At least for the next ten years.
Speaker 9 (17:46):
For us to get our league back, because Winby is
going to be the best player on the floor on
both ends of the floor for.
Speaker 1 (17:54):
The next decad up one.
Speaker 3 (17:59):
That's weird.
Speaker 2 (18:01):
That xenophobic and racist and weird for us to get
our league back. Take over our league? Whose league does
it belong to you?
Speaker 1 (18:14):
Perk?
Speaker 3 (18:14):
Is it your league?
Speaker 2 (18:16):
I thought the NBA, as the best basketball league in
the world, was supposed to be for the best players,
no matter where they're from, and that it was gonna
embrace those players, and the league has.
Speaker 3 (18:29):
But Kendrick Perkins certainly isn't.
Speaker 2 (18:31):
This is like when Jackie Robinson came into MLB and
people said, we don't want too many and let's hope
they're not too good, which was insanely offensive. But what
Perk said is pretty much along those lines. But right
now it's time to play. It's time to make your

Kyle Dubas did his press conference to wrap the season yesterday.
The Stanley Cup playoffs are in full swing, joining me

It's Tyler Kennedy a DK Listening to Kyle Duba's talk.
Speaker 3 (21:51):
Is gin not gonna stay?
Speaker 2 (21:52):
And if so, why isn't it done already?
Speaker 10 (21:57):
From hearing him talk, it seems like he wants some back.
I think the only problem is maybe agreeing on money,
because it seems like they both want to come back,
and I don't know why it should take so long.
I feel like at his age and how long he's
been in the league. It'd be like, hey, you're going
to sign up for this, We'll have you one more year.
(22:18):
How's this south? Like it should be easy, but when
you're maybe talking to agents, it adds a little different element.
Who knows, But I'd be interesting to see how much
Gino wants for next year, because maybe Kyle Dubis is saying, hey,
we can only pay you this to make sure, and
you know, maybe Malkin's like, no, I want to at
(22:38):
least a little.
Speaker 3 (22:40):
Bit more than last year.
Speaker 2 (22:42):
What I'm hearing is I'm hearing he wants two years
and that would be a bigger stick.
Speaker 3 (22:47):
But for me, if I'm the Penguins, then money would.
Speaker 10 (22:50):
Be Yeah, if he wants two years, it's you can't
give him two years. I think giving him one year
as a farewell, like great job, and let's see how
next year goes before we commit for another too. I
thought this could have been his last year and he
had a very good year. He got hurt, he got
(23:10):
some suspension, But to ask for two at his age
is asking a lot. So yeah, that could be another hiccup.
And if I'm Kyle Dubis and I know Milkin, you
know I play with them. I want to Stanley Cup,
but I'm not given of getting milk in two years
at his age.
Speaker 3 (23:29):
How about is Gino right now?
Speaker 2 (23:30):
Pros and cons like like Dubas said, he's not blocking
anybody except maybe on the power play.
Speaker 3 (23:35):
But but I think he's still a top six, don't you.
Speaker 10 (23:38):
Yeah, I think he's a top six a point per player.
I think there's a lot of teams out there that
would love to have him. I think another element why
what makes Gino valuable is Chinakov. I think he can
really take Chinakov under his wing and show him and
all that stuff and have a countryman that helps Gino's
(23:59):
cause you I think he's a top six, Yes, I
think he can only play the top six because he
needs minutes to stay warm. Right like those there's certain
guys like a Jordan Stall that can go right down
on the fourth line and still produce and still still
on the bench and do other things like penalty kill
and still be effective. If Geinny Milkin is not a
(24:22):
penalty killer, he's a top six point getter. And if
you have him sit on the bench for five to
ten like, you're gonna see a different player and that's
scary to me because you want to see guys push
him out of his spot. You want to see And
when Dubas said he's not blocking anyone, I was like, well,
that's not good either, right, I want that these young
(24:44):
guys clipping at his knee, at his heels. If if
GenAm goes on a five game run where he's not
very good, you want to see a young guy grab
that by the horns and run with it. And I
don't see anyone doing that yet. And I don't see
anyone in the the prospect pool of doing it. I know. Actually,
(25:05):
mcgrorty's been playing really well at the HL level. He's
you know, he's got a couple of overtime goals.
Speaker 3 (25:10):
He's a third liner, TK, don't you think.
Speaker 10 (25:13):
Yeah, yeah, he's a third liner. Like I'm I'm maybe
I'm hoping Mark, but he had he hasn't transferred to
the NHL, and that could be something Kyle Dubis is
looking to do in the off season. But to sign
guys in the off season that could be nipping at
Malcolm's heels, you're gonna have to overpay him because there's
(25:34):
gonna be a lot of other teams.
Speaker 2 (25:36):
Oh and he'll bek Yeah, Like I know, Vincent Trotzek's
name came up.
Speaker 10 (25:43):
And I would him. You'd have to trade for him.
And he's not that young like he's when we think
about like a golf course, he's on the back nine
of the golf course, like he's got a ten eleven
hole at thirty three, you know, and what he know,
maybe the gap until we find someone else. Yeah, And
I think that Vince would excel in Pittsburgh. I think
(26:06):
exactly what I think the Penguins need, But New York's
gonna want a ton from it. And I don't know
if we're willing to give that up and give up
the future for a guy right now. And we're back
kind of at the same spot. Where do we take
one step back to take two step forward or are
we still trying to make this a team that could
(26:28):
compete Because you hear Philadelphia, who's up on the rise,
they're already talking about adding players like right, it's gonna
be hard for the Penguins to keep clipping how they
did this year. But again, it all depends who they
get in free agency, who they re sign, because there
is gaps in their lineup.
Speaker 2 (26:47):
Well, no, and The problem is, like you said, Gino
isn't blocking anybody like Coyven and you would hope that
he would be ready by now because he's a top
six style player, but he simply isn't.
Speaker 3 (26:58):
Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (26:58):
I I'm glad they've got the playoffs. I enjoyed it,
But I don't know. I envy Toronto getting McKenna. I
wish the Penguins were getting McKenna or whoever.
Speaker 13 (27:08):
Yeah, I'd be willing to miss playoffs and not have
a great year to get a guy like that because
he's he's going to change to Trollo maple leafs.
Speaker 10 (27:19):
You know. And you can say, you know, it could
be rigged this and that, but it it would help
the Penguins a ton. They're they're they're missing a gap
from the last year of a superstar that can come
in and take the team to another level. Yeah, we
have Brian Russ, and Brian Russ came out of nor
but we need we need a top five pick in
(27:42):
the draft that's gonna like be your guy in the future.
We don't.
Speaker 3 (27:47):
We don't have that, no question about that.
Speaker 2 (27:48):
We're talking to Tyler Kennedy from sports Net Pittsburgh here
on the x t K. Here's the story that's gonna
sneak up on a sid can extend on July first
if he doesn't on that day and the spit hits
the spam. Don't get me wrong, I think he's a
Penguin's lifer. But the media, the Canadian media wants him
to go to Canada. Montreal is so bad. So I
(28:09):
feel like he's not only got to extend, it has
to happen on July first.
Speaker 10 (28:15):
I would agree with that. And just because he's so
passionate about Canada right the way he wear, you know,
the way, how excited he is to play for his country.
Speaker 2 (28:24):
He's going to play in the World Championships in Switzerland
right now.
Speaker 10 (28:27):
For heck's sake. And there's a reason behind that. Deugh
maark like at his age, he can't be off for
five months and then jump into training camp get ready
for the year. I feel like he knows he has
to go there and keep playing at a high level,
so the break in the summer is not that long.
He doesn't miss that much of a step. Because when
(28:48):
you're eighteen to thirty, you can be off five months
and you don't lose a step as soon as you
get above thirty five. If you take too much time off,
and he knows this, you lose a step to these
young guys because these young guys are like these young freaks,
and at his age, he knows he does not want
to lose a step because he didn't get past the
(29:10):
first round. So there's a big reason there. But again
can't like Sid is idolized by Canada. And it's tough
because like your return of Sydney Crosby, which I think
will never happen but would be huge.
Speaker 1 (29:24):
I don't know like that.
Speaker 2 (29:25):
I don't know, like like here would be the problem
to Caim. We're just spitballing here because I know you
think like I do. He's not going to leave, but
Saint Montreal wanted him. What could they give with that?
With that sacrificing from the team they've assembled that already.
Speaker 10 (29:39):
Is very good, Like maybe Demidoff or.
Speaker 2 (29:45):
You're not giving Upmado for Sid. I gotta be honest.
I love Sid, and I hope he's not listening when
I say this. If Montreal would give us Demodov for Sid,
I would drive Sid to Montreal.
Speaker 10 (29:56):
Yeah, but I do think like those those most Canadian
teams would really think about it. I'm telling you the way,
the the way that just on Jersey sales. You know,
they make their money just on Jersey sales, and fill
in that attendance and all the publicity, all that stuff.
I mean even you know, maybe Toronto, but he ain't
(30:19):
leaving like he's He's a Penguin through and through.
Speaker 2 (30:22):
And you know, just for the record, I was kidding,
I would not trade him for Demodoff because somebody will
tell him.
Speaker 3 (30:27):
I said that Dupas was very blunt.
Speaker 2 (30:31):
I thought we got a lot of candor at that
press conference TK and about the cap space, especially the
Penguins have a lot the most in the league. But
the UFAs, I mean, is there anybody on there that
appeals to you? You said, Trocheck, but you'd have to
trade for him. I will get that list. It's all
guys you might get if you already had a good
team and needed that veteran to finish off.
Speaker 3 (30:52):
But that's it.
Speaker 10 (30:55):
Yeah, when you look at they're they're all older, they're
all they're all kind of on their back nine, you know,
and they're all guys that if you had they'd be
almost like treadline deadline or trade deadline exactly exactly to
fill in your little spots to push you over the top.
Like you know, Billy and Garren came in. He knew
(31:17):
he was going to fill a role, but it wasn't
going to be for the future that long, you know.
And that's when I see when I see those guys,
and and and and the craziest thing about the UFAs
is they all get overpaid way too much, you know,
I think too long. Like now they're in the driver's seat, right,
(31:38):
they're they're in the driver's seats where before, you you know,
when I was trying to find a contract, I was
calling GMS myself and begging for a job. Now these
guys are sitting back and being like the next pool
of guys is it's not there, you know. And when
I see that and I see the the list, it
doesn't excite me at all. And I hope we don't
(32:00):
make a move where we sign a guy long term.
That's a hope.
Speaker 1 (32:07):
Play like Kyle.
Speaker 3 (32:09):
That doesn't sound very likely, does it.
Speaker 10 (32:13):
Well, you know, look at look at Graves though, look
at you know, he's made he's he's an unbelievable GM.
But he had made some you know, and could he
do it again?
Speaker 4 (32:24):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (32:25):
Is he?
Speaker 10 (32:26):
Is he gonna? I think he's more patient now with
his picks and really going after the right guy. But
I do think he has a plan, and I just
hope that making the first round and seeing we're just
you know, we we just we didn't play good enough
to the first three games. We were sleep and they jumped
(32:48):
on us, and then they just need to win one game,
you know, and we we finally woke up. But I
hope that doesn't change the plan because a little bit
of a hope from making playoffs.
Speaker 3 (32:58):
D you're watching the postseason.
Speaker 2 (33:01):
I think the playoffs have been great, especially this round
I think has been exceptional. Who's playing the best hockey
right now?
Speaker 3 (33:07):
What team?
Speaker 10 (33:10):
Well? I think Carolina's record, you know, it shows that
they're deep. They play all four lines. And when I
judge a team mark, I judge it by how everyone
pulls the rope. And when I look at Carolina, they
have a little bit of everything. They have some grit
that they were missing last year. I think the last
(33:33):
part of that team is they needed to grow a
set in the playoffs to compete against teams that were
willing to rough it up. They lost against Florida because
Florida just roughed it up. You know, you see Philly
trying to rough it up. They played first round against Ottawa.
They're trying to run. They finally got that element of
(33:54):
their team. And then you look at their lineup. They've
got young goal scorers, they've got death players, they have
guys in the four line that kill penalties. They've got
pretty good defensemen and their goalies playing pretty well. So
they're the ones that I think can go pretty far.
I love the the Buffalo Montreal. I think it's electric. Yeah,
(34:20):
you want to watch that, even though the Penguins aren't playing,
You sit down to watch those games because they're so exciting.
I think they're They're another one that I'd love to
see them play Carolina, either of them, because that would
be an unbelievable match because now all the teams know
how to win and know how to play their game
to be successful in the West. I don't watch too much.
(34:44):
Vegas is Vegas. I think they're a better team. They're
they're starting to click. They do a little bit of everything,
and and that's really my my take. Colorado, aren't they Yeah, Colorado,
theyre they you know they McKinnon. Their stars are extremely
high powered stars, great defense, mccarr plays the whole game
(35:08):
like they're They're gonna be tough to play. They're gonna
be tough to beat because they always have a legit
good player on the ice.
Speaker 2 (35:15):
Now, I usually root for Montreal. They've been my mistress
team since I was a kid. If the Penguins were
out of it, but I got to tell you, wouldn't
it be great to see Stalls he get another cup
seventeen years later, your old line mate.
Speaker 3 (35:26):
That's what I'm rooting for.
Speaker 10 (35:29):
Yeah, I love you know what? After he fought Brady
could Chuck. I texted him after the game and I
was like, hey, Bud, great job. I don't want to
say I said, we got to show you know what
that that's what your team needed. And he just said, dude,
I had no choice. I knew I was gonna do
(35:50):
it through the series and this was the right time.
And I said, hey, dude, you never lose when you
show up. And he's he's honestly marked such a great
human being.
Speaker 3 (36:00):
Great captain, great teammate, great friends.
Speaker 10 (36:04):
Everything, and the way he's worked his way down the
lineup and still been professional and doing the right things.
And you you hear all their young guys talk about
him like he's our captain. He's the guy that leads
the ship. And it's not by scoring goals, it's just
by his effort, showing up every shift, doing the little
(36:26):
things in your team. They they excel off that when
you see your captain at his age blocking shots, doing
that extra effort. And Mark, when you watch it, like
he's still like a like a gronk right, Like he's
so big, he's still like has the ability to just
the whole guy's off because he's so big, and it's fun. Man.
(36:49):
I really do hope too that he deserves another one.
He's been in the league long enough and I think he's
playing the right way, and I think it is his time.
Speaker 2 (36:58):
DK, great stuff, as always, I appreciate the insight. We'll
do it again next week and enjoy the playoffs.
Speaker 10 (37:04):
All right, Thanks for having me, Mark.
Speaker 2 (37:05):
That's Tyler Kennedy. What a what a great media guy
he's become. Just delivers every time, whether here's sports Net Pittsburgh,
wherever uh up? Next time to ask Mark anything? That's
always a lot of fun. Eight three three four one
two w xdx. The number to call eight three three
four one two w xd x, or you can leave
a talk back by clicking on the microphone icon at
(37:26):
the iHeartMedia app. Got a new feature today. It's about
the last word, a monologue at the end of the show.
That way you have to listen one O fivene the X.
Speaker 1 (37:37):
It's the show week mornings at six.
Speaker 11 (37:39):
Of course, is On.
Speaker 1 (37:43):
Is built for everyone who builds.
Speaker 3 (37:46):
I can't even quote the big o'bofski right.
Speaker 1 (37:48):
Goodbye DX at one five.
Speaker 2 (37:55):
Thanks ageinting TK every time we play slide it in
to open up as mark anything I was to employed.
Speaker 3 (38:03):
We never had Coverdale on for.
Speaker 2 (38:04):
His exit interview, and he's like kind of disappeared, not
doing any music, just kind of managing the Whitesnake legacy,
not even on social media. DC was on this show
like six seven times. Interviewed him for the Post Gazette too.
Really good guy. He's our Sinatra, the phrasing, just getting it.
So I miss David a lot. Not just the music.
(38:27):
I can play that anytime I want, but I missed
talking to David once in a while and seeing him
when they're on tour.
Speaker 3 (38:36):
That's like, what's great about this job?
Speaker 2 (38:39):
I know Mary o Lemu, I know Sidney Crosby, I
know Troy Pulamalu, Ben Roethlisberger, David covered the Elannie James Dio.
Speaker 3 (38:46):
How cool was that?
Speaker 2 (38:48):
Asmark anything brought to was by People's natural gas people
in the sense of utilities company, say reliable natural gas energy.
That's people's hyphengas dot com. Let's go to Peter Peter
as Mark.
Speaker 10 (39:00):
Anything first off, your ps.
Speaker 11 (39:06):
Talk with.
Speaker 3 (39:11):
Penguins. Everybody's what's your point?
Speaker 10 (39:15):
A fine stelly?
Speaker 6 (39:17):
Right?
Speaker 10 (39:18):
I think he's a you know, I think he's a
little league manager. Do you think she can do what
it takes to get these guys in the playoffs?
Speaker 11 (39:26):
Just don't know.
Speaker 2 (39:27):
I don't think Donnie will be allowed to do anything
off the chart, off the analytics.
Speaker 3 (39:31):
I think that's how I don't know.
Speaker 2 (39:33):
Seventy five eighty percent of big league managers manage now.
They can never go with their gut. They have a
preordained pitchcot For example, Walkie was talking about that last
night on the broadcast, how every team, every game has
a specified amount of pitches that the starter is supposed
to go, and they almost almost never deviate from that.
Speaker 3 (39:53):
So I think Donnie's a good manager.
Speaker 2 (39:55):
I'm not sure how, how, how how much he can
really do beyond what they let him.
Speaker 3 (40:03):
Yeah, let's go to Jeff and DC.
Speaker 2 (40:06):
Jeff thrown with double M.
Speaker 14 (40:09):
Mark, what is the singular best concert you've ever been to?
And have you ever been to a show that was
so bad that you walked out before it was even
half over?
Speaker 3 (40:21):
I'm not sure I've ever walked out that early.
Speaker 2 (40:23):
I've dodged a few on course to be traffic, but
the best content I've said it a million times. Nineteen
eighty eight, Wheeling, West Virginia, Aerosmith on top Guns n'
Roses opening Guns n' Roses, trying to make it red hot,
best ever, first album out, Aerosmith tried to bounce back,
trying to come back. Perry I think had just rejoined
(40:45):
the band not long before that. So, yeah, that was
the best. It was a wheeling seven thousand seedar I
was up close. It had that hill billy energy. Just
very memorable. Thank you for the call. Let's go to
a talkback. Hey, Double M, do you know if if
a coach ever took any advice or employee of strategy
you suggested on your show. I suspect that Tom McMillan
(41:14):
and I got the Hatcher brothers cut from the two
thousand and two US Olympic team because Herb Brooks asked
us what we thought of them, and we.
Speaker 3 (41:23):
Told him, and they didn't make the team.
Speaker 2 (41:25):
So I don't know if Herb used to talk to
people kind of outside the box.
Speaker 3 (41:32):
He got opinions from everybody.
Speaker 2 (41:33):
So and I will say, Eric Christensen, he always went
that forehand move, that shuffle forehand, and he perfected it
on shootouts. I said to one day, Crusher, when it's
match point, go to your backhand one time. You'll walk
it in. It'll work that one time. They're all waiting
for that move. You can do it anyway, but the
(41:53):
backhand will work big once. So he did it, and
after the game at the press gathering, they asked him,
why do you decide to do that? He pointed at me,
he goes his idea, and of course nobody printed that
or said that because that would be giving me credit.
Speaker 3 (42:09):
Let's go to a talkback.
Speaker 6 (42:11):
I know Chris Latang has the entire legacy here in Pittsburgh,
in with Gino, in with Sid but does it make
more sense to, at this stage in his career, buy
him out and replace him with somebody in free agency
or via trade instead of having him played meaningful hockey
for the team this year.
Speaker 2 (42:29):
No, that's just stupid, And I've heard other people say
that it's stupid. Whoever says it because they're stupid. You're stupid.
Any idea of that is stupid. They get no capri
relief that they buy him out. So what exactly would
the point be buying him out? Who you're gonna replace
him with? You'd be paying more money, not get capriliaf
and Tanger was their best player in this series against Philadelphia,
(42:52):
said no, don't be stupid, stupid. Let's go to Peter
and Cranberry.
Speaker 1 (42:57):
Hey, Mark, are you doing Hey?
Speaker 3 (42:58):
I know you're a big fan of Big Shaw.
Speaker 14 (43:00):
I was just wondering, other than your signature sauce, which
is fired, by the way, what other sauces do you
like there or do you have like a go to
other than that one.
Speaker 2 (43:08):
It's either called frank Sinatras or Frankie blue Eyes. The
blue cheese is right in the sauce.
Speaker 10 (43:14):
Good choice, very good?
Speaker 6 (43:15):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (43:15):
Yeah, no, no, I haven't I.
Speaker 2 (43:16):
Haven't been to Big Shot Bobs in a while because
the branding on the wings doesn't exact.
Speaker 3 (43:20):
They fit in with the wake in one eighty.
Speaker 2 (43:22):
Same goes for Archie's wings, which I like, but no,
I mean, if you can get the naked wings without
the breading, those are actually okay. But but yeah, but
I can't wait to get back to Big Shot Bobs.
I'm gonna lose. Thank you for the call.
Speaker 3 (43:35):
I'm gonna lose. I think what am I at right now?
Speaker 2 (43:39):
I'm at sixty eight ish somewhere in there, getting on seventy.
I want to give you seventy five, take some time off,
maybe gain five pounds back, and then try to get
to one hundred. But when I travel, I gain weight
back because I don't observe when I travel.
Speaker 3 (43:54):
That would be dumb.
