Speaker 1 (00:00):
Nice on radio on TV.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
Always a pleasure to talk to the old two nin
er Phil Bourg Borky. Let's cut right to the quick.
What's going to happen with malk and what's your prediction?
And you think we'll find out tomorrow? When Kyle Duba speaks.
Speaker 3 (00:13):
To the medium double, I'm good to be hones with you,
like always, I don't know, and if I tried to
give you an answer, I'd be guessing.
Speaker 4 (00:23):
I don't know if anybody has that crystal ball. Yeah,
I mean usually I have a pretty good answer for
you when you ask me, pointing in questions like that,
I don't hear on this one because there's a lot
of intangibles, there's a lot of moving parts, there's a
lot of what if and so I can understand both
sides of it, I really can. I think I think
most of the fan base should be able to understand
(00:46):
why you would not keep him or why you would
keep him. I think if you do keep him, I
think there will be a surge from him. I don't
think it'll be a victory lap. I don't think it
will be a year of complaint and see if oh
I squeeze one more year out of the Penguins. I
think that he'll empty the tank at the end.
Speaker 5 (01:05):
Of the day.
Speaker 4 (01:06):
He had a great year this year. I mean when
you think of the playoffs. Yeah, early on he got
a couple of goals, but he really tailed off towards
the end of the playoffs. So again, if you start
doing the ledger, the pluses and the minuses, there's a
lot to still like about a forty year old of
Finney Malton.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Well, I got to say, I don't think the fans
see both sides of it. I don't even think the
room sees both sides of it. I think they just
want him back, period. And I wonder what their reaction
will be like with the room and the fans and
especially the captain if Gino doesn't return.
Speaker 4 (01:38):
Well, I thought about that too. You're right, but you know,
at the end of the day, also, it's about running
a business and it's about winning hockey games. And at
the end of the day, you know, we still did
not win a series with up Finny Malkin in the lineup.
If it's still about that, then maybe you turn the
page and you bring in young players. I did find
it interesting. I don't know if there's the last interview,
(01:58):
one of the last interviews that Afganny Malkin had, he
did say, Hey, I understand the spot that Kyle's in.
I understand they want change. I understand they want new players,
faster players, younger players. And for him to say that,
I didn't think I'd ever hear those words come out
of his mouth. But I think he has either got
some really good advice or has just been able to
read the room to understand that, Yeah, maybe it is
(02:22):
time for change. We have not won a playoff series
since twenty eighteen, and so maybe it is time for
fresh blood. But he also made a point when he
was asked the question that would he continue to play,
would he go back to Russia and you know, make
a boatload of rubles playing in Magnetogorsk, his hometown. He said, no,
I don't want to play. They are going to play
in the National Hockey League. He'd go and play somewhere else.
(02:44):
You know, so your mind starts wondering where would that be.
But to your point, also Mark about the room. You know, listen,
we lost Paul Coffee, and we lost Mark Reky, we
lost John Collen, some of our most beloved teams. Yeah,
but Mark come on, man, like, no, no.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
Man, we're both thinking what should be. I'm telling you
what is and you know I'm right, I.
Speaker 4 (03:08):
Know, but I can't. I can't swallow hard enough on
this one. I can't. I can understand the kick in
the undercarriage for a week, then you get over it
and you go back to work. You're you're a paid
professional to do the job and win hockey games. I
get that. So to have the booboo face on, because
if Guinea Markin is not here, that's as unprofessional as
unprofessional can be. You move on, you turn the page,
(03:30):
you shake his hand, you give them a huggin where
you go go win hockey games. And so maybe that's
just the way I was brought up with tough love.
But to say that this room is gonna drag its
lip across the ice for the next eighty two games
next season, I have a hard time.
Speaker 5 (03:44):
Believe in that.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
I don't. But we'll see.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
And by the way you said, Gino reads the room,
Gino also said we'll see what the new owners think.
So yeah, he's reading the room all right. How much
of a changeover should there be? Gino, That situation's only
part of it, we'll do, but just look into trading
vets like I don't know, Raquel, Russ Carlson, even.
Speaker 4 (04:04):
Latang uh again, a little bit of tough love here,
but I think everything should be on the table except
eighty seven, right, just because I mean, it's time to
the injection of youth. You watch a lot of hockey
like I do, and I watch these these games. I
watch the way Carolina plays, and I watch the way,
(04:25):
you know, even Anaheim plays. They're fast, they're young, they're hungry,
they're you know, they're they're the future. And at some
point you have to turn that page. And so yeah,
there might be some hard decisions made, and maybe it's rough,
maybe it's for Quel, you know, those are those are
all movable parts. I think a guy like China coof
I don't think that's a movable part. I think that's
(04:45):
a guy that you want to see.
Speaker 2 (04:46):
Oh no, no, they're gonna keep China cough. But yeah,
but I'm talking about the older guys.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
I mean, I I just don't have a feel. And
that begs this question, what's the priority next? Or is
it developmental or is it to make the playoffs? And
squeak in again.
Speaker 4 (05:02):
It's both. I think I didn't do it.
Speaker 1 (05:04):
I can't do it, couldn't do it this year.
Speaker 4 (05:06):
Yeah no, But but I just think to say, oh, no,
you to pick one or the other. If you're asking
me to pick a lane here, No, I don't think
you can just say, oh, you just go youth and
you develop.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
But one or the other.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
And look at this year, boury can They started eight
two and two and it shifted the focus. I mean,
however good or bad, it definitely shifted the focus. The
young guys got phased out and down to the minors.
Speaker 4 (05:30):
No, that well, I don't know who was really ready though, Mark,
if we really come on, if you want to run,
don't don't tell me that Ruta mc gordon's ready for
prime time. Don't tell me that we've had this conversation.
He's not ready. Billy Corvenan, I don't know if he's
If he's an NHL player, I don't know if he's
quite ready for prime time. You know, the Bill Zings
(05:51):
and the will Horcoffs, they still got to cut some teeth, right,
so you know which guys are really ready for prime time?
And so I don't think I want to. I want
to hu horn those game guys in. I don't think
I want to force them in. When you've got suitable
guys up here right now, I think that they have
to They have to marinate a little bit in the
American Hockey League, and that's fine. But in the meantime,
(06:12):
I still think when you've got sid and if you're
going to keep Barry Carlston, because don't forget he has
a full no movement movement clause and I think him
and his family like it here. I think if you've
got those guys here, I think you still have to
make the the playoffs. Even if it's using your words
squeaking in, I still still think it's it's important for
this organization.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
Would you bring back Mantha and or Shay?
Speaker 4 (06:38):
What's what's the number for Anton?
Speaker 1 (06:41):
Too much?
Speaker 4 (06:42):
Okay? Then no? Then no, no, I move, I move.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
I think he's going to get four years, six million
per year.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
If you look at the UFA, that that's he's probably
no lower than the second biggest you know, producer in UFAs.
Speaker 4 (06:57):
Okay, then I think we agree on Antheony Hampy to
shake his hand, and you hope more guys come to
Pittsburgh in those situations where things didn't work out the
year before they come here.
Speaker 5 (07:08):
If you want to.
Speaker 4 (07:08):
Use us to get thirty goals and get a big contract,
then bring them on. Man, bring up four five of
those guys in a year. Okay, Now what's your number
on Shay?
Speaker 1 (07:18):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
I haven't seen his as widely discussed. I mean i'd
give him three years at three per what about you?
Speaker 4 (07:26):
Yeah at three at three yeah, or even ten million
over three years.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
Yeah that I'd draw the line there. But yeah, i'd
give that to him.
Speaker 4 (07:34):
Yeah, sign the deal, Sign the deal.
Speaker 5 (07:36):
Absolutely.
Speaker 4 (07:37):
He did a lot more and tangible things on the
ice that didn't make it onto the score sheet than
people want to give him credit for outstanding. He's a
legit top four NHL defenseman. Great complimentary guy for somebody
that might be a little more offensive.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
We're talking to Phil Bourgfield two nine are brought to
us by Brick Players and Allied craft Workers Local nine, Borky.
Besides Kendall, who I don't have any dots about, and
I'm sure you do not as well. Which if the
kids do you think can break into the lineup next year?
Speaker 1 (08:10):
And who do you have the most faith in.
Speaker 4 (08:13):
Well, nobody has me jumping up and down. I mean,
I love Avery Hayes. I want to see more of
him in a Pittsburgh Penguin uniform.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
I think I think he replaces a Charie with door
and Loastte, don't you I do?
Speaker 4 (08:27):
I do. Tristan bros Is an interesting player, left hand shot,
to play both center and wing. I'd like to see
more of him as well as Rutty mccordy. This is
an important year for Rutor mccordy, not only in the
playoffs here in Wilkesbury, but his off season and where
he goes with his with his strength and his stride
(08:47):
and his skating ability, because we won't deny that he's
got skilled, he's got toughness, but can't his legs get
him there to showcase what his assets are. It's a
question mark for me, if I'm being honest with you.
You know. Will Horcoff is another player that seemed to
have a great start playing for Michigan, scoring just a
(09:07):
ton of goals and then kind of peed it out
a little bit. What's he gonna look.
Speaker 1 (09:10):
Like next year as a big body?
Speaker 5 (09:12):
Right?
Speaker 4 (09:13):
Uh? Bill's on and another kid Who's I think he's
gonna make his debut is professional debut tomorrow night for
Wilks against Syracuse and the game number one of their
of their playoff matchup, and I'm really interested to see
him what I saw in junior man, I was thinking, like,
can that guy bring that what I saw in junior?
(09:34):
Can he bring it to the NHL level? Because he
just played almost like like like a like a power
forward that was just fearless, you know, that a guy
that brought a lot of jam. And I think at
the end of the day, as much as you're looking
for skill and speed, Mark, I think we need to
be tougher. I mean, you look at these playoffs, you know,
I think we need more guys, you know, like just
(09:56):
like the Avery Hayes. Maybe you're not the biggest guy,
but you're a son of a you know what.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
On But that's why the one unrestricted free agent that
really interests me as a fit is Mason Marchman.
Speaker 4 (10:09):
Yeah, oh yeah no, but here he was available this season.
I'm curious on why the Penguins didn't grab him then
because he ended up going to Columbus, right, you know,
but I don't know. I haven't looked at the contract.
I don't know if he's is he ufa Mark? Yes, Okay, Yeah,
that's a guy I'm I'm definitely taking on swing at again,
(10:29):
A big body can get you twenty maybe twenty plus, and.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
He's good at Shenanigan's. He's good at that type of
stuff if it's required.
Speaker 4 (10:38):
Well, his late daddy was as good as it came
as far as stirring the pot, and.
Speaker 1 (10:44):
His father perfected the knee on knee hit.
Speaker 4 (10:48):
I think he just took it to the next level
after old Samuelson kind of do that out there quite
a bit. But but you're right, those type of players,
those are the kind of players that you need on
your team. Those are the kind of players that had
that skill set, that mindset, willing and able to play
playoff type hockey.
Speaker 2 (11:08):
What about Brunick, I thought the organization quite honestly watched
his season with all the hesitancy, and he had kind
of a wasted year. I might think he should start
the season in Wilkes, but i'd be I'd be looking
to bring him up at some point.
Speaker 4 (11:23):
Yeah, a little bit I saw when he joined Wilkes
after his junior year was finished. He looked like a
different player. He looked like he had his confidence in
his swagger back again, just as his body, Bobby language,
and his skating style. He had that upright, really confident
stride back again. He didn't seem hesitant of jumping up
(11:44):
on plays and creating offense from the from the blue line.
I want to see more of him again. A right
hand shot that you know can kind of bring an
edge to his game, a big shot at skating ability.
He's another guy definitely want to see more of. I
hope he makes the team out of camp, right, but
if you if you see some flaws in his game,
(12:06):
there's no reason why he can't go back for twenty
games find his game hopefully comes up. Because the ideal thing,
right Mark, you send a guy down, you bring him up,
and then you never said and send him back again,
just like what happened with Jake Anzel and Brian Russ
and the whole lot of them.
Speaker 1 (12:20):
How's the goaltender gonna shake down?
Speaker 2 (12:22):
I keep hearing people say that morrishof should be annoyted
number one. I think you should definitely make the team,
but I might, I might do what they did with
Skinner and hilloffs and rotate them for a while, but
I think Morishoff will cut himself from that pack.
Speaker 4 (12:36):
Yeah, so I for the fagus conversation that Marishoff is
in Pittsburgh right out of training camp. Yeah, I don't
think you forced feed him. I think you kind of
let the thing play out kind of organically naturally, just
find out who and if it is Skinner and excuse me,
not Skinner, but sheet Loft and Murshoff, the two youngsters
(12:58):
in there. Then again, I like the way you're thinking
that let's just let this thing play out, and just
even if you just do next year what he did
this year when you started with Jari and sheet LOFs,
we we just alternated back and forth. And again, let
let the player tell you who wants to be the
number one guy and who's ready to ride with it.
You know, I'm also interested. Again, the depth is unbelievable.
(13:20):
This terly Grotier and what he's doing in wheeling is incredible.
That he might take them all the way to a championship.
So again, you don't know what's gonna happen with yol Bloom.
Criss is going to be a restricted free agent in
the off season, but as far as depth and quality
of depth in the goaltender position, I don't know if
there's another organization in the whole league that has what
the Penguins.
Speaker 1 (13:40):
Have, Margie.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
Do you consider the season of success and if so,
how big its success and how unexpected?
Speaker 4 (13:48):
I do, And I said that right when Josh gets
gets off and I did a rap after game number six,
and I got I got some messages on that because
you know they locked to the Flyers because they get
shut out in game number six, that people were still staying.
But as I mentioned, I think once the ducks cleared
(14:09):
and the sun comes up the next day, you'll take
a thirty thousand foot view of the team and what
they went through, whether it's injuries, whether it's an O
four and fourth spell in December, with some of those
losses being as gut wrenching and heartbreaking as I've ever
seen being a part of this Penglan organization, and be
able to bounce back the way they did to win
(14:31):
those two huge games in Long Island and all there
were two places where they've had not had success, which
really it locked them into a playoff spot and they
never relinquished it.
Speaker 5 (14:42):
From that point.
Speaker 4 (14:43):
There's just too many pluses. I know, the minuses are
easy to point out and say, what about that, and
what about that? And what about I get all that.
It wasn't a perfect season. It was a bit of
a roller coaster arrived. But at the end of the day,
where they started back in September and where they are
right now, I think it was a giant step forward
for this organization. And hope is alive and well.
Speaker 2 (15:03):
Fourky great stuff. Is always a pleasure to have you
on this year. We'll talk again real soon.
Speaker 4 (15:08):
Sounds good. Double. I'm enjoyed the rest of the playoffs,
enjoyed that time together, and this was good hockey dock.
Speaker 2 (15:15):
That's the old two nineer brought to us by Bricklayers
and Allied craft Workers Local nine joined today at BAC
nine PA dot com. We got more hockey talk with
Ryan Malone at the bottom of the hour. He's got
his big Malone Family Foundation fourth annual Black and Gold
breaking the mold hero In celebrity game in galap We'll
give you details on that when Bugsy joined us. Up next,
(15:35):
a whole lot of Steeler quarterback talk, because that's what
God wants.
Speaker 1 (15:39):
One oh five niney X for genius Mark Madden.
Speaker 6 (15:43):
This is one of those two chick straft bring the
duck takee type of affairs.
Speaker 1 (15:46):
What you're gonna make us play a Wampcu game. It's
not fair, It's not Fair's not fair.
Speaker 7 (15:51):
The exit one O five nine, You got a whole
bunch of Steelers quarterbacks sound because it never goes away.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
Here's Rich Eisen showing he knows a lot less than
we think he does because he thinks Rogers played good
last year.
Speaker 8 (16:14):
I think Rogers played way better than what you expected
last year.
Speaker 1 (16:17):
And I also mean the American people.
Speaker 8 (16:21):
And stranger things have happened, and Michael Pittman's walked through
the door, and Rico Dowdell's walked through the door, And
you could make the case the Steelers are a better
team if Mike McCarthy comes in and pluses up that
offense in a way that he's done before.
Speaker 2 (16:45):
The American people, Who are you trump? Michael Pittman, ain't
a b ric O'Donnell, ain't frank o'harris. Rogers did not
play better last year, not stats wise and not via
the eye test. In no way was Rogers better. He
(17:06):
was scared to take a hit and his arm came
and went dependent on the game, depended on the throw.
He offers nothing besides gile Rodgers is washed and McCarthy
can't reverse that. Here's Damien Woody on ESPN. He gets
it talking about the Steelers at quarterback.
Speaker 9 (17:29):
Dean wood what's the best way for this thing to
turn out for the Steelers.
Speaker 6 (17:32):
That one of these young quarterbacks gets significant playing time
this season. The Pittsburgh Steelers, they need to be looking
towards the future, not to the pass to a forty
two year old quarterback. We know Aaron Rodgers first ballot
Hall of Famer, but he's not He's not going to
do anything for the Pittsburgh Steelers right now. Hopefully one
of these young guys gets significant playing time in the season.
Speaker 1 (17:54):
Exact the mundo.
Speaker 2 (17:56):
The best case scenario is that Rogers gets hurt at
training camp or early in the season and the Steelers
are forced to move on. The Steelers need to have
a prep season, not just a quarterback, but getting the
offensive line set up for the long run. Who's gonna
play Where the best case scenario is Rogers gets hurt,
(18:17):
can't play, and you find out some stuff because you
ain't winning no Super Bowl no matter what. Here's Colin Coward,
and he's right about how the Steelers approach the quarterback position.
Speaker 9 (18:31):
Most NFL teams have a three to a five year
planet quarterback, and the Pittsburgh Steelers they treat quarterback like
it's a slot corner or an off ball linebacker. We
may get to it at the trading deadline. Let's see
what plays out in the preseason. The Steelers have had
five different quarterbacks for their opening game in five years.
Speaker 2 (18:54):
Slot corner, off ball linebacker. You got it, Colin, That's
what I'm talking about. That's one hundred correct. The Steelers
street quarterback like it's just another position and there is
absolutely zero plan. In fact, as I've often said, these
Steelers as a franchise have no plan beyond the next game.
Speaker 1 (19:16):
Can McCarthy change that for the good of the logo.
I certainly hope so.
Speaker 2 (19:20):
But I wonder, especially with Art so spooked about no
playoff wins in nine years, I think, as in past seasons,
everything is going to be immediate. Ron I want to
tell you about the bet Park's online casino and sports

Speaker 2 (21:34):
Go ahead, you can say it because it's true. It's
damn true.
Speaker 5 (21:37):
Hey, Mark, I love the show.
Speaker 6 (21:39):
Thank you for.
Speaker 4 (21:39):
Making my day.
Speaker 5 (21:40):
Yeah, the X at one oh five nine.
Speaker 2 (21:44):
Lots of stuff on tap for the Malone Family Foundation
this week. We got the Heroes Game on Wednesday at
RMU Island Sports Center. The Gala on Friday at Rivers Casino.
We welcome now the founder of the Feast, former penguin
from Upper Saint Clair.
Speaker 1 (21:59):
He's Ryan Malone. Bugsy.
Speaker 2 (22:01):
What a lineup for Wednesday's game, Dan mu is gonna
coach Nick Benino back on the ice, and Sun sweee
Hm is gonna play the former Steelers kicker Is sweets
him any good?
Speaker 5 (22:11):
Ah, he was pretty Yeah, he can skate. You know,
he is Canadian. I guess we give him that. I'm
sure he's got a ship now. But he's been a
great supporter. We're very excited to have some new faces
supporting our you know week here I feel in Pittsburgh again,
just kind of celebrating the true heroes of this town.
Speaker 2 (22:32):
Yeah, let's talk about that because the Malone Family Foundation benefits,
Like you said, some true heroes go a little more
in depth with that for me.
Speaker 5 (22:41):
So we have all Wednesday, we have our Heroes Tournament
where we invited all seven of kind of the local
area of kind of Pittsburgh teams, first responder veteran teams
to participate in kind of the tournament, and then we
kind of end the day with a celebrity game. But
all the funds that we raised from Wednesday at our
(23:03):
big event on Friday down at Rivers Casino, all the
money goes into our foundation program and these Warrior Academies
that were able to do support veterans' mental health through
the game of hockey.
Speaker 2 (23:15):
No, it's it's it's a great endeavor. And uh, I
was at last year's game and this year too in
the gall as well. But last year's game, are you
gonna bust somebody's light tower?
Speaker 1 (23:24):
This year?
Speaker 2 (23:25):
Didn't you almost kill Eddie Meo last year? The old goalie?
Speaker 5 (23:30):
No, I don't think so. I think he was maybe
having flashbacks. I'm not sure.
Speaker 1 (23:34):
I high on him. I thought you, like, like I said,
buzz the light tower.
Speaker 12 (23:39):
I did.
Speaker 5 (23:40):
I was definitely I had to put it bar down,
you know, just one for the fans.
Speaker 1 (23:43):
Nobody can hate you for that. Uh.
Speaker 2 (23:46):
Now we'll talk more about the game in the gall
in a minute. But what's gonna happen with Evgeni Malkin?
Do you think the Penguin's gonna keep him or not?
Speaker 5 (23:54):
I don't. I don't see why you wouldn't you know?
Speaker 13 (23:56):
In my mine?
Speaker 5 (23:57):
Obviously the age stand one just talks about. But it's
if you feel like, you know, to play some youth
you could bump back in your lineup. Maybe right you
have a nice talk about maybe expectations and what role
he wants to play. And I think that leadership is
really unmatched. And again I think like giving the playoffs
and given all these younger guys, the China costs, the Solmberg's,
(24:19):
the kindles that playoff tase and preparation, I think is uh,
you know, unmatched. So again they're you know, I think
they're building for the future. But right now, anytime you
have Sid and Carlson all these guys, I think you're getting,
you know, with the team of last year. Add so
maybe important pieces this year to help solidify the team
not only for the present but the future. But I
(24:41):
would definitely like to keep mister milking around.
Speaker 2 (24:44):
On a scale of one to ten, give this season
a success rate A grade bugsy. I mean, it sucked
loes into the flyers up till then it was pretty good.
Speaker 5 (24:53):
Yeah, I mean I think that's where, you know, just
the experience comes in. You have you have to go
play those games. They kind of really feel it and
see it and see how you can adjust. And I
think it was just a little late in the series
when the Penguins are like, Okay, hey, maybe we don't
need to get mix it up after all these whistles
and do this. I think they got away from the
game that they had success during the season, and that's
(25:15):
just the way you got to play in the playoffs
where I'd like to see them at a little more
you know, grits and they're sure, but you know, I
think the team in the playoffs, you don't have to
punch back, you don't have to play that stuff. You
choose not to. So again, I think it was a
great experience for the team. I think the overall success
for me is just even adding those the younger pieces
(25:37):
that are already established and that are already kind of
in this developmental plan as these guys are winning. So
I think that's the biggest thing is what mister Dubas
did in the during the season to bring in some
of these other pieces that are long term plays that
looks like which is great.
Speaker 2 (25:52):
You know, I thought of you during some of the
after the whistle scrums, you and a couple other guys
like Max, because you guys knew when.
Speaker 1 (25:59):
To and when not to.
Speaker 2 (26:00):
You also kind of knew when to initiate because you
got to do a little bit of that. That's kind
of an art form, isn't it.
Speaker 5 (26:06):
It is it's just kind of feeling where they're at
and usually Like for me, you're always watching the goalies,
so like if he's getting rattled, if you give him
a little poke, obviously you're gonna poke Amar. So I mean,
it's just kind of that fun game you play. But
when I remember, uh, I was with Tampa. We're playing
Boston in the Eastern Conference Finals. We knew Boston kind
(26:29):
of got off on muscling those around and getting into
all the fights, and we knew we probably couldn't match
him up with them in that regard, you know, having
char and Lucik and all these guys. So you know,
coaches like nobody says a word after the whistle, no
one looks at anybody, no pushing, so we like totally
try to, you know, take that part of the game
(26:49):
out of it. I think that just shows you how
there is those games inside the games, and now you're seeing,
you know, I think the NHL is doing a better
job of cutting down these scrums that are not really
doing anything. You know, everyone just kind of like Patty
caking it. I think that's where all the old school
guys like, okay, just fight or then get out of there.
You know, you can kind of mess it up a
little bit to turn the temperature up and turn it down.
(27:12):
And that's the fun part. I think with hockey you
kind of have this that the chess mass in the
mind as well, and that's where the intimidation, all that
fun stuff comes into play. So that's what makes the
playoffs so great.
Speaker 2 (27:25):
Which of the kids do you have the highest popes for?
Obviously Kendle an eighteen year old rookie. You were twenty
four when you made your debut, so my god, for
a teenager, I like Kim. But which of the others
do you think it is going to have bigger impact
as soon as next year?
Speaker 5 (27:39):
I mean, I think Solimburg just being that big. I
think they're calling them Elmer's you know, I think being
that big and what I saw with the minutes he had,
you know, I'm just thinking, Okay, if he gets more
ice time, would it be more dominant to some of
the ways he's able to bring that puck to the net.
And really with that size, I mean that defender is
(28:00):
pretty much helpless, you know, once he gets that angle
or inside shoulder. He and obviously in Chinakoff as well.
I mean, both those guys get me very excited for
the possibility of them growing into more dominant players in
the league.
Speaker 1 (28:15):
Yeah, I like both of them.
Speaker 2 (28:17):
Chinakoff's I mean, I don't know if he's fool proof,
but boy he can shoot the puck. One guy I
kind of think' is a sleeper in a bottom six
role is Avery Hayes, because you know, in terms of
a guy who stirs the pot, I think the Penguins
need a guy like that.
Speaker 1 (28:30):
I kind of like what he does in that regard.
Speaker 5 (28:33):
Yeah, I mean it brings me I think of like
a Barnaby type guy. You know, you need a guy
to kind of come in and provide that energy and
jolt and toughness. And you look at Montreal, you know,
Marty brought in Gallagher kind of had a key point
in the series. He thought for them because he knows
what he's gonna get, you know, in front of the
that be hard to play against, as we talk about,
(28:54):
you know, if it's going after the guys that aren't
used to like, you know, getting maybe yelled at or beaks.
So it's he's a guy in a role I think
on a team that's definitely needed.
Speaker 2 (29:07):
Do you believe Marishoff should be the number one goaltender
next year? What's the best fit for him and shilloffs
in that position with the Penguins.
Speaker 1 (29:15):
Next year.
Speaker 5 (29:18):
Or earlier to just kind of hand someone, you know,
the keys of the reins. But I think, you know,
with that battle, I think both them for development wise
is great, you know, and it's great knowing you have
a great young goaltender and she lost still a lot
to prove. So I think that's a great tandem that
could definitely, you know, work for the Penguins. It's nice
(29:38):
to kind of know you have that goaltending coming here
in the future. Along with this is an impressive young
talent as well on the team.
Speaker 1 (29:46):
Yeah, I agree with you. I don't want to hand
it to him.
Speaker 2 (29:49):
I want to kind of rotate, kind of feel it
out and hope he wins the number one job.
Speaker 1 (29:53):
But I got to get him in there.
Speaker 5 (29:54):
Some Yeah, no, I agree. I mean the more experiences,
same thing. I think his interviews seems very similar to
Vassilevski being able to hear how he speaks and thinks,
so that Russian mentality, you know, it's very I do
my job, I stopped the buck, I practice and train,
(30:15):
so like those guys have already lived the game before.
It's actually happened. That's how much they they train and
focus and that preparation they put in. So it's exciting,
I think. And that's where I think as we talked
about the successful season for the Penguin, I think in
a lot of those areas they see a lot of
this great opportunity and depth at these kind of key positions,
(30:36):
which is like, who should be exciting for Penguin fans?
Speaker 1 (30:38):
Who's gonna win the Cup? Who do you like on
who's left?
Speaker 5 (30:42):
Oh geez, yeah, I was a little. It is just
amazing to me how literally like that inch has added
up in so many games and over times from the
calls and just you know, fuck going in or out.
I mean, I'm still shocked Montreal one game seven, I think,
you know, two shots in the final period. So that's
(31:04):
still throwing me a for reup loop just because of
how hockey works sometimes. But I would like to see
the Wild get past Colorado and you know, no one
Carolina now is just keeps proving to all of us.
They've just been the steady horse galloping I feel like,
all year in front of everybody and not getting much
(31:25):
coverage for it, and they're looking pretty solid. I might
just ride to Montreal belief so on this one with
Marty coaching, and those guys get another opportunity and being
that young, fun team, so they will go Montreal in
Minnesota in the finals.
Speaker 1 (31:42):
That'd be exciting, that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (31:43):
Now I want to talk a bit more about the
Foundation events, and I think it's great and we've talked
about this off there that your dad O G. Bugsy's
involved Greg who played for the Penguins, a great playmaker,
that's got to make it even more special for you,
this this great work you guys are doing.
Speaker 5 (31:57):
Yeah, I think having my dad, my brother here, we
all obviously grew out and played hockey around here. I
think it's really celebrating the city and bringing all these
teams together and really just embracing the hockey community in Pittsburgh.
I think we all know how special and unique that
brotherhood is, so to have this opportunity to give back
(32:20):
in this way, it's just it's just been very just
really just a truly blessing. We feel so again, it's
just honoring those those heroes in our community in Pittsburgh
and showing what the game can do. And we all
come together, so we're very excited and thankful for Rivers,
Q Intel's and others, a big sponsor. We couldn't be
(32:41):
doing a lot of this stuff without, so we're very
excited for all these great partnerships and growth that we've
had in the short few years that we got it going.
So we're exciting for the hosts again at Rivers, respecting
I m just under six hundred people, so we continue
to grow and that just shows again the support and
love of this great city and then using the game
(33:03):
of hockey to don or our hero. So we're very
thankful for the opportunity and support.
Speaker 2 (33:08):
You know, I don't know if I ever made this
clear to you, but I covered your dad my first job.
I was nineteen working for UPI covering the peng when
your dad was still playing.
Speaker 1 (33:15):
How old does that make me and him?
Speaker 5 (33:18):
No, it's crazy to think about because I know my
oldest son is auring eighteen and oh he was good
Luck charm in the eight playoffs when he was born,
So it's kind of like, I can't imagine when he
gets that old.
Speaker 2 (33:31):
Now you got me and Corey Graves on stage for
the gala, and thank you. I'm so happy to be
a part of it. But am I going to get
hit with the steel chair? This seems a little fishy.
Two wrestling guys up there.
Speaker 5 (33:42):
Yeah, anything can happen. I think that's the exciting part
of our events. You never know. You got to keep
your hand on a swivel. Yes, I'm very excited to
have Corey there and he had. He has a great
story too with his family and first responders and even
he was in Pittsburgh here getting the wrestling team go
when he was doing dispatch calls as a first responder.
(34:04):
So it's pretty cool to him the first respawned community
on how he supports them and has done some of that,
so it's very cool exciting to have him be a
part of it as well.
Speaker 2 (34:13):
Buggsy, great stuff. Thank you for taking the time. And
I can't wait for Wednesday and Friday. We'll see you there.
Don't don't kill Eddy Mio or any goalie.
Speaker 5 (34:21):
We'll see all.
Speaker 1 (34:24):
Right, Buggsy, good stuff. That's why I'm Malone.
Speaker 2 (34:26):
The Malone Family Foundation fourth Annual Black and Gold, Breaking
the mold.
Speaker 1 (34:30):
We got the.
Speaker 2 (34:31):
Hero, Gay Heroes and Celebrity Game Wednesday at RMU Island
Sports Center.
Speaker 1 (34:35):
You can stop down and check that out.
Speaker 2 (34:38):
How about Nick Benino getting back on the ice, Dan
Mues coaching in the game gonna be terrific and uh.
And then Friday the Gala at Rivers Casino. I'm going
to be a part of that, hosting a couple panels, Bugsy,
Greg Malone, Corey Graves. It's going to be so fantastic.
So but right now it's time to ask Mark Anything.
Eight three to three, four to one two WXDX. That's
(34:59):
eight three three four one two w xd X. And
I'll tell you about today's I usually don't indulge talk

Speaker 1 (35:45):
Time to ask Mark Anything.
Speaker 2 (35:47):
Brought to us by People's Natural Gas, People's Insense Utilities Companies,
Save Reliable Natural Gas Energy, People's Hyphengas dot Com as
you as you know, when the Penguins wrap up, we
wait a week and then go three till six. That's
in my contract because I'm old and needs sleep. And uh,
(36:10):
we were kind of rearranging where all the segments go.
We forgot, but we'll be more organized tomorrow, if not
necessarily better.
Speaker 1 (36:17):
So call now and ask Mark anything.
Speaker 2 (36:18):
Eight three three four to one two WSDX Adam Schefter
reporting Aaron Rodgers was never in Pittsburgh this weekend. I
never said he would be. In fact, I said pointedly
that that was fiction and it turned out to be
just that. But if you want lack of credibility, I'm
not the guy for you. I want to talk about
(36:39):
Drew Aller and his performance at the Steelers rookie camp
at the top of the hour.
Speaker 1 (36:46):
Right now, though, before we get to the calls for
as Mark anything.
Speaker 2 (36:49):
Today is the twenty fifth anniversary of the Penguins beating
Buffalo in Game seven, second round of the playoffs advance
into the Conference final against New Jersey, and who scored
the winning goal of all people, our buddy Darius Casparitis
with the OTGWG in Game seven against Dominic Hashik of
(37:10):
all people at Buffalo, and it was quite a unique celebration.
Casper skated at full boar down the ice toward his
own net and dove, and then Andrew Ferrens piled on
top of him, and Alexei Morozof piled on top of them,
and everybody piled on top of them. It was the
rarely seen Human Centipede celebration. And that was before the movie.
(37:32):
So I can only assume that that celebration inspired that flick,
which was just grotesque. By the way, you know who
didn't join the Human Centipede though, Mario Lemmew and Kevin
steve Is the two old guys.
Speaker 1 (37:43):
Ain't no way they were doing that.
Speaker 2 (37:44):
They just exalted on the bench after Casper scored a
very big Penguin memory in Mario's comeback here, you'll recall
he joined the team in December and the Penguins got
all the way to the Conference final before losing to
New Jersey. Remember something about that series, John Madden, no
(38:05):
relation was kind of shadowing Mario, and at one point
Madden yelled for a pass when Mario had to puck,
you know, kind of playing dirty. And after Mario turned
the puck over, he really played dirty because he just
slashed the Bejesus out of Madden. Wow, and should have
(38:26):
That's that's just crap to do. That is just crap.
Speaker 7 (38:31):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (38:31):
Let's go to Max. Max ask Mark anything?
Speaker 5 (38:35):
What up?
Speaker 1 (38:35):
Man?
Speaker 5 (38:35):
What are you do?
Speaker 12 (38:38):
You remember the movie Demolition Man?
Speaker 1 (38:41):
Yeah, Wesley Snipes and Stone.
Speaker 5 (38:43):
Yeah, they had a funny premise in there of a
franchise war.
Speaker 12 (38:48):
Who won the franchise war in the movie it was
Taco Bell.
Speaker 1 (38:51):
That was Taco Bell.
Speaker 12 (38:53):
Who would went to franchise.
Speaker 2 (38:54):
War today depends what kind of what kind of franchises
you talking about?
Speaker 1 (38:57):
You're talking about just fast food?
Speaker 2 (39:00):
Yes, sir, that's a good question given the current state
of fast food, because I wouldn't say it's in decline,
but I wouldn't say it's in a high point either
Are you talking about quality or just or just who's biggest?
Speaker 12 (39:16):
Well in the movie, I thought it was hilarious because
Taco Bell is horrible even back in the nineties when.
Speaker 2 (39:21):
It Oh, No, I don't liked Taco Bell. I think
most Mexican restaurants or such. Then if you're gonna have Mexican,
you might as well go to Taco Bell. The only
difference is in the seating and presentation. I mean there's
something like I like El Campesino, I liked Don Pablo,
but mostly it's the same thing.
Speaker 10 (39:36):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (39:37):
I would say based on four or five, I would
say based on whose biggest Wendy's would win. Wouldn't you think.
Speaker 5 (39:44):
I'm a Arby's man?
Speaker 12 (39:45):
To be honest with you.
Speaker 1 (39:46):
No, No, I like Arby's better that the food.
Speaker 2 (39:49):
Don't you feel like Wendy's is the dominant fast food
franchise right now?
Speaker 1 (39:52):
Maybe?
Speaker 5 (39:53):
No.
Speaker 2 (39:53):
You know what I'm going with McDonald's because Brian Cox
does the commercials.
Speaker 12 (39:59):
Yeah, McDon He was definitely a big, heavy hitter within
the wars.
Speaker 1 (40:02):
Well, Brian, Brian Cox wanted for me, thank you for
the call.
Speaker 2 (40:05):
Those of you who watched Succession may recall there's a
birthday president Logan Roy, the patriarch of the media giant.
His kids bought him a soccer team, Hearts from the
Scottish Premier League because because Logan Roy is Scottish, Hearts
is a birthday president. And they said, Dad, we bought
(40:26):
you your favorite soccer team, Hearts, and he goes, no,
I'm hips, which is Hibernian in Scotland, And and the
kid goes, are you sure, and he goes, well, let
me see, it's entirely possible. I forgot the name of
the team I've supported since I was a boy, but
so he got Hearts, and Hearts is on the Virgil
(40:48):
Win in the Scottish Premier League. After having not maybe
ever it's always Celtica Rangers, but then again they might
blow it.
Speaker 1 (40:54):
Uh, let's go to a talkback.
Speaker 14 (40:57):
Who's the greatest athlete of all time?
Speaker 13 (41:00):
You're opinion, I say, Michael Jordan, thank you, by it.
Speaker 2 (41:04):
Ain't Michael Jordan. In terms of pure athlete, it ain't
Michael Jordan. I'm not sure a basketball player could be
the greatest athlete of all time. Uh, although I don't
know basketball's probably a soccer player. I'd probably go with greatest.
You know, the greatest pure athlete of all time is
Chris Jihano Ronaldo. Not the best soccer player, pretty close,
(41:26):
but not quite. But I think the best pure athlete
of all time is Christiano Ronaldo. Let's go to Jeff. Jeff,
you're on with double m Mark.
Speaker 13 (41:36):
I read Cameron Crowe's memoir. Also, I see the parallels.
I have a two part question. One, what would your
mom have said if a fifteen sixteen year old Mark
Madden asked to go on the road with bands? And
number two, do you think you had the maturity to
do that assignment without succoming to all the temptations that would.
Speaker 5 (41:56):
Have been there?
Speaker 12 (41:57):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (41:57):
Would my mom have let me go?
Speaker 2 (41:58):
Absolutely if she thought that that's what I really wanted,
just like Cameron Crow's mom did. Uh No, I wasn't, dude,
I'm not sure. I had to drink till I was eighteen. Okay,
although it's one, it's it's one. It's one thing to
not drink till you're eighteen, it's another to turn down,
say cocaine from Jimmy Page. Although that said, that said,
(42:23):
how old is I was twenty three when I turned
on opiates?
Speaker 1 (42:26):
From Pete way of UFO.
Speaker 13 (42:30):
Okay, good point, to.
Speaker 2 (42:32):
Which Pete said, smart lad, thank you for the call.
Let's go to a talkback.
Speaker 15 (42:37):
Hey, mark O, the last year, how many times would
you say you were woken up in the middle of
the night from something going on outside dog park? Car horn, gunshots, whatever, Like,
how many times did you get woken up?
Speaker 2 (42:50):
Not a ton of gunshots in my neighborhood, that said,
A mystery, all kinds of broken glass on my steps.
It looks like from the porch light. But my porch
light isn't broken. Neither is the porch light next door.
Very mysterious.
Speaker 1 (43:07):
Let me think.
Speaker 2 (43:12):
See, I can't characterize because I'm not gonna sound sleep right.
Speaker 1 (43:15):
I wake up just because I wake up.
Speaker 2 (43:18):
So in terms of being woke up by an outside influence,
I can't even recall A three, three, four one two
WXDX is the number to call. We come back. We'll
wrap up the Steelers rookie camp, which wasn't eventful except
for one thing. One oh five nine y X.
Speaker 10 (43:41):
Now here's your chance to win one thousand dollars, just
as you're this nationwide keyword on our website.
Speaker 5 (43:47):
Win
