Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now it is time for our weekly golf segment and
partnership with the Alwa Trading Company and joining me on
the line now as the general manager of Canterbury Golf
Blair Min's and good morning. Have you very well, thank
you and I understand some congratulations in order. You've been
recognized as golf Manager of the Year at Golf Ends.
(00:21):
It's annual awards. I know you don't get into the
game for recognition or accolades, Blair, but all the same,
it must be pretty nice to be recognized.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Yeah, I thank very much. Yeah, like you say, it's
one of those pleasant surprises. So you're kind of looking
away and doing your own work and trying to improve
the game, and it's kind of really nice to be,
I guess recognized with some of the success the whole
businesses working towards and yeah, it's a real one or to.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
Receive that, Well, it's delve into a few of the
highlights to see in front of me here junior membership,
let's start there. What double up one hundred and twenty
one percent, that's incredible, Blair. What's what's been the catalyst
so that spiking numbers in your view?
Speaker 2 (01:02):
Yeah, some really positive numbers, and obviously that growth has
would have been over the last few years and then
culminating in the last year's numbers. But yeah, it's just
a real populayer in the game right now. I guess
we worked really hard to have structures in place which
allow these young people to play with that's around reducing
those initial barriers to get into the sport. And then
(01:22):
really we can have to make sure there's coaching programs
available for our systems, and also the clubs do some
great programs as well, and then just making sure there's
a lot of events that are available for them to
come and play either with their family or with their
friends and they're like minded peers and kind of keep
them going and hopefully giving them to get the bug
of golf. And you know, we're really seeing it over
the last few years, which has been awesome.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
Certainly are for we look more broadly speaking, beyond juniors
club membership record high you're up to over fifteen thousand members.
I see six hundred and seven thousand rounds played in
the region last year. There was a massive number. How important,
as you say, Blair is, is accessibility and and sort
of removing some of those barriers.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
Yeah, Yeah, fantastic numbers across Canterbury. I think we're at
fifteen and a half thousand kind of looking at the
last look for this, we even more than those those
numbers there, and yeah, it's really positive.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
The club's do a great job in Canterbury.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
We're really fortunate we've got thirty six clubs that kind
of span from being to Plunge all the way that
sort of central Canterbury and North can around hand the
Springs and you know with this we're a spool for
choice here. But you know, the clubs do a great
job of presenting themselves and making themselves appealing. And I
mean some golf clubs are kind of the kept membership
near it's it's so popular. So yeah, they're doing great
(02:35):
jobs out there, and obviously those rounds played. We're entering
around sort of fifty five thousand rounds per month across
the region and it's just a great place to come
and play golf now, either for Cantabrians themselves or people
visiting the region as well.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
Liam Manson with US general manager of Canterary Golf Funding
that shot out to me Blair here in the nights
is recognizing Canterbury's representative history. This is a a project
that was under taken last year acknowledging players that represented
the region right all the way back to nineteen fifty one.
Was it's a lot of time going through the archives,
(03:13):
talk us through the reasons behind that and then the
importance of recognizing the region's history.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
Yes, as to say, a big process there. Nineteen fifty
one for the men and nineteen forty nine even so
the stack for the ladies as well, so a bit
of both codes and yeah, we just thought as an organization,
it's only right there we respect the past is as
much as we look forward to kind of empowering the
future as well. But we've had so many good players
come from and represent Canterbury over the years. Part of
(03:41):
their detuney on to sort of a lead amateurs or
even professionals, and we just wanted to, I guess, go
through that lengthy process to recognize them all with their
own unique number. And the result of that is now
you can go on the website there and see every
camera player that's played for our region the New Zealand level,
and we're kind of honoring them all with their own
(04:03):
representative caps.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
Be with a number embroidered as well.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
So if you're one of those members out there that's
listening to this, the hes A neat receipt kept, feel
free to reach out to myself and we'll make it
happen for you. But nowhere we're put proud of that
process and everyone else that comes through now is in
their own unique number as well, so something that will
last on for the future as well.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
Revamped website looking good to just quietly there. Blair. Hey, look,
when you have all this sort of success and all
these milestones, I'm sure you don't want to rest on
your laurel. So I know we're April now of twenty
six and we're about to enter daylight saving ends tomorrow
and into the winter months. But what's the primary focus
for Canterbury Golf over the next upcoming months.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
Yeah, we're kind of in a big phase of our
community into club at the moment, which is a lot
of competitions doing to conclude there, which is fantastic. We've
got fifteen different under club competitions running at the moment
across all speak from of the game, men's, women's age groups,
the whole lot.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
So that's really big right now.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
All come into a kind of the winter months which
a little bit quiet in terms of tournaments and events,
but they may start to get into the premier, into
club and reprecentive golf from about August onwards as well,
so it kind of winds up again from there on.
And yeah, there's always something going on in the golf calendar.
It's a three sixty kind of sport and all the
club's to be busy throughout, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (05:25):
And it'll be remiss of me not to ask Blair
the Masters next week, are you excited to put the
feed up and indulge.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
Yes, they might be Mike somehow making onto the screen
of the work set up the year, just to make
sure we're watching and staying on the beat of where
it's all unfolding on Monday. But it's an exciting time
of the year or all the golf fans out there,
you know, really look forward to that event and did
a lot of.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
Drum that goes with it. So yeah, everyone will be
looking forward to that, no.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
Doubt about that. Heye, Blear, really appreciate your time here
on the Canterbory All Sports Breakfast. Congratulations again recognize as
Golf Manager of the Year. Golf ends it's annual awards
and doing great things here for the sport and the region,
So thanks again and well done.
Speaker 3 (06:06):
