Speaker 1 (00:00):
There's a huge congratulations and welcome to an excuse thamous haymos.
Good morning. Thanks having me, Craig, mate, I'm outstanding. Congrets
on the on the hell big award. Mate. Gee, what
what a couple of years it's been for you.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Yeah, I know, it's sort of funny going to you know,
award tonight, which forces you to look back at the
last couple of years and entirety and you kind of
realize how how many cool things we have actually done.
And I think for me particularly as well, seeing like
coach James Sandlin's also awarded Coach of the Year, was
was very very special.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
Yeah. I was going to ask you about that. I mean,
to share the stage with with well, he's your coach,
he's not your coach, but he's a good mate and
obviously a former former competitor against you. Just just what
did that mean to you? Because you know clearly you
can't do what you do without.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Him, right, No, absolutely not. I mean I think that's
that's the amazing and really really special part about it is,
you know, I get celebrated all the time. I get
the winds, and I get the medals, and they get
the you know, all the various other accolades that come
with it. But you know, the people behind met me.
I've talked about a number of times. They are so
so instrumental and actually getting me over the bars. So
(01:13):
to have Jimmy awarded and recognized for that was really special.
But you know, not only the work he's done with me,
but also the other athlet's now squad, and just the
ability for me, you know, as one of his mates
and someone I used to compete with, to kind of
see him come along this junior the last few years
and really hone his skill as a coach has been
really inspirational. So yeah, it's been It's been cool. I
(01:34):
feel like the ViBe's been pretty good in campus peak
in terms of, you know, just just everything's going on.
So we're really heavy.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
Have you had a chance to sort of sit back.
I mean, it's probably been a pretty crazy week for
you this week, but have you had a chance just
to sit back and go, wow.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Yeah, I look, I think so. I think. You know,
the last few months has really been about you know, reach,
rushing these goals that we've got and knowing that the
big kind of overrushing feeling last year was that I
really want to keep going, and I feel like there's
a lot more that I can get hungry about. But
I think also the cool part is that I'm needing
(02:14):
to do that because I've already achieved all things that
initially kind of I thought were the easy kind of goals,
not easy goals, but you know, the titles have all
been taken care of now, and so that actually gives
me a lot of freedom just to enjoy my career
and do the things that I really enjoy and want
to get out of bed forced. So yeah, it's pretty
cool to get to that point in your career. I
don't know if there are a lot of athletes who
(02:37):
really have that sort of option, you know that often,
so I'm definitely grateful for that.
Speaker 1 (02:43):
Well, it's interesting because I recall you coming into the
studio here after you won your Olympic gold in Paris,
and to be fair, made at that stage, you know,
it's still pretty fresh, but you weren't one hundred percent
sure what you were going to do and what your
future was. But I guess it was a good call.
Keep going.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
Certainly was. And I think the cool thing was is that,
you know, I think I recognized that I was at
the top of the mountain, and that that kind of
that sense of climbing up the next bigger and bigger
and bigger one, trying to find that next rush. You know,
it kind of kind of runs out a week, but
when you win the Olympic Gold middle and so yeah,
last year was very much about just getting back on tour,
(03:24):
just trying to really be like understanding and respectful for
what actually it is that I enjoy about being an athlete.
And I think that now he's kind of been a
little bit more formalized in our thinking around what that is.
I feel like I'm in a really good place again
to keep on pushing on for another few years at least.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
So that's the plan, mate, just to just to reseet
the clock and away you go again, you know, in
a few weeks time after a break.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
Yeah, definitely. I mean I think that, you know, with
the titles that I've got, I know there's still more
hype actually clear as well. And so I think that
that's kind of where we we really push towards now,
is understanding which competitions we need to target so that
I can jump the highest. And I think that if
we do that then then I'm going to be pretty heapy.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
So can you be a little bit more picky and
choose you around around where you compete nowadays, now that
I guess you're at the live you're.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
At, yeah a little bit. I mean the beauty of
athletics is that you know, for ninety percent of your
competitions you are issually just a contractor. So I think
I've always had the freedom to to kind of pick
and choose at least we'll learn a scope of what
comps I want to do. But this year and in
the next year and then following into the Olympics, I
(04:38):
think that there is there is really good opportunity to
do that. So what I'll pretty much do is is
target a couple of really key competitions and off on
the top of my priority is what competitions can I
actually rich in yond put those on top of the
list of things that I want to do, and then
everything else kind of felters down in terms of priorities
(04:59):
around you know, where is it good conditions to be
able to jump by what time of year the comps
lined up in and and you know a few other
sort of different criteria.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
From there, does the money come into it. I mean,
look the end of that, that's your career, mate, Yeah, yeah,
it does. I was pleased to see that.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
But also I think you know within that, I know
that I make the most money when I don't really
high so so making sure that those comps are sort
of lining all up together. Yeah, you are usually sort
of ties in quite nicely.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
Talking to hamous cur here on the All Sports Breef
Breakfast help the sports Person of the Year winner just
earlier in the week. Now today, mate, back to bit
of grassroots. I understand you're off down to the International
track meet at Punai and Maddie you'll be cheering, cheering
her on.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
Yes, yes, I'll be down there. It's looking like it's
a decent day from now high out there, and hopefully
it stays that way. But yeah, I'm looking forward to
the heading down. I'm not competing, just as I'm in
a really heavy training block with this more focused season
in mind. But yeah, my partner Met is competing in
the high jump at about one point thirty, so I'll
(06:11):
be down there watching that. And I think there's a
few other pretty decent athletes, the likes of Town Wepton
and Tom Walsh and heaps more that I can't name
off the top, mated right now that will be down
there as well. So it's going to be an awesome day.
I'm looking forward to it.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
Yeah, it's playing on and we know we love your sport.
We know you love your sport, Hamish, you're popping down
on what's your Crusaders tomorrow? Perhaps or.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
I am not going down to watch the Crusaders unfortunately.
Me and Tom have actually with launched foundation helping junior
athletes and come up through the sport and help fund
them to essentially get to Europe to get international experience.
And we've got a fundraising afternoon tomorrow, so we will
be a little bit double bopped, but I feel like
it's probably for a good excuse, right.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
Yeah, yeah it was. It's a very good excuse, to
be honest. Yeah, and and also know you love your golf.
You've been you've been out, haven't hit You've had a
chance to play.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
Me I unfortunately, Craig, I haven't been out a huge
amount of summer. The even though I'm not competing. Yeah,
the heavy training and the miles I've been doing have
have been pretty inshorting. So I'm looking forward to at
some point. I think the next plan is postcom Games
might try and sneak to Scotland for a few days
(07:24):
and play a few courses over.
Speaker 1 (07:25):
There, or it could be worse. I guess mate, I
thought you can. You'll be a right waiting for that.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
Yeah, exactly, it's awesome.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
Hey, hey, miss look, just want to have a quick
chat with this morning and congratulate you, you know, look
on everything you've done, and obviously James as well. You know,
we're well aware as a team ifort and and you're right,
you're the one that gets all the glory, but without
without James and the team behind you, it just doesn't evening.
So mate, it's it's been tremendous to watch you grow
over the last two or three years and we look
(07:53):
forward to what the future holds for you and you
were getting even higher.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
Yeah, cheers mate, Well thanks for having me on as well.
Look forward to hopefully seeing lots of people down this
afternoon watching the athletics as well.
Speaker 1 (08:06):
Mate, Look, I think you're going to be busy down there.
I'd put a couple of spear pens in your pocket,
I'd say.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
Cheers, mate, I appreciate it. For more from news talks.
