Speaker 1 (00:00):
Like Matt Egan from the Temperton Golf Club joins us.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Matt, good morning morning, Leslie, I.
Speaker 1 (00:05):
Think, well, god, how has the weather affected you this weekend?
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Yeah, well we've been We've been pretty lucky. Really, we
didn't we didn't get the thunderstorms and the hail that
was predicted yesterday, and it's been pretty clear this morning.
So yeah, we're hoping for a rain or a rain
free day.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
Fantastic because I'm told reliably that the Templeton Golf Club
is a great test of golf. With the past seventy
three layout over six one meters and the slope rating
of one hundred and twenty six, it's.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
No pushover exactly exactly. You're well informed, Leslie.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
Thank you, Mike god Nay so tell us about your
involvement at Templeton, and I know it's a very proud club.
You've got great club members.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
You see it. Well, I've I've been a member at
Templeton since the start of two thousand and four and
on on the board for two years, and I've taken
over as president in November last year.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
What does that entail for you? Any extra duties?
Speaker 2 (01:13):
There's always extra duties there's you know, we have a
monthly board meeting, but we also have subcommittees and mine
meetings as well, and just what the course is always.
There's just lots of things that go on in a
golf club, just lots and lots of things. So you
just get called into help or or given us on
(01:39):
where we want to go with these things. And there's
a lot of unplanned events seem to happen at a
golf club.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
I can actually imagine that, I really can, because I'm
on a community pool committee and I just know exactly
what you're saying, things that you totally don't expect and
they happen. It's all good. It's all in the experienced bank,
isn't it.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
That's right, Yeah, it's good. Yeah, it's good fun Too's
a lot of you know, we've got I think we've
got about six hundred members out there in total, and
we have like varying types of subscriptions that we've got,
so you know, for younger you know, we have juniors
and eighteen to twenties and twenty to twenty five, thirty
(02:21):
up to thirty and thirty five, just varying types of subscriptions,
and we also have players that just want to play
during the week and not play on weekends, So we
have our weekday subscriptions and yeah, so there's a lot
of a lot of different types of subscriptions that we've
(02:44):
got to accommodate people in how they want to play golf.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
Yeah, absolutely, So the Templeton Golf Club has had a
bit of a residence through Woodward Cup too, isn't it.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
Yes, we have, Yeah, our Woody boys I've been I think, yeah,
playing extremely well and like they're a very oward teams,
are very like they've got a lot of pride in
Templeton and with the passion of the players and the
management and the supporters, it's really helped drive a success
of the of the Woodwood Cuptain. And with the success
(03:18):
that we've had, we've been able to attract good goalses
from other from other Canterbury clubs and also we've got
a range reps that play for Templeton and also Otago
reps that play at Templeton as well too, So it's
been really it's just been really great support for the club.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
Tell us about the New Year Classic.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
So the New Year Classic that's our big fundraising tournament
for the year, and our major sponsor for the New
Year Classic is the Club Roots, So the the tournament's
actually called The Room New York New Year Classic, and
they are the naming rights sponsors, but we also have
(04:07):
we also have sixteen other tournament sponsors and there are
also other club sponsors as well for the day. So
we've got a lot of support, a lot of support
from from the sponsors and we really really yah just
appreciate their support and just going back to the Clubroom,
it's the it's the first year of sponsors, so yeah,
(04:27):
we're we're really grateful to get them on board as well.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
Brilliant. So what are the plans for the golf club
moving forward? You know what's surely you've got a five
year plan or a ten year plan.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
Yeah, we've definitely got plans. Well, we're just what we're
trying to do. We just want to continue to develop
and improve the course because we just want to make
it when when our members turn up and when visitors
turn up, we just want to make it a bit
a better experience through body so that they that they
(05:01):
want to come back. And what we have done recently,
we've just redeveloped a bar downstairs a bar and cafe
and we've got the carpet tiles going down next week
and so that should be all already to be opened
the week after. So yeah, we're really looking forward to that.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
Well, you must have a very good committee. I'm thinking
there's obviously great ideas coming out of it and people
who actually.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
Just do stuff. Yeah. Yeah, And we're very lucky in
that regard because we've got a lot of a lot
of good committee on the boards and on the match
committee and just everyone that helps out. We get a
lot of we have a lot of volunteers that help out,
especially with the course, and we just couldn't we we
just couldn't do what we do without without volunteers at Templeton.
(05:52):
So yeah, once again we're very very grateful for their
help and their support.
Speaker 1 (05:57):
Brilliant. Well, look, we've loved chatting with you, Matt Eagan
and and just say well done and your future proofing
it too, and not only just doing it for the now,
you're doing it for the future and that's brilliant.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
Yeah, exactly exactly. We'll have to get you out for.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
A game of golf, wouldn't mind that at all? Yeah,
at some point, Yeah, yeah, as long as you've got
plenty of people in the rough to get me out of.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
Trouble, so you worry about that, we all get on there.
Speaker 1 (06:19):
Yeah, you're a good man. Thank you very much.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
Okay, thanks Leadlie, appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
We'll chat again. That has met Megan from Timberton Golf Club.
