Speaker 1 (00:01):
Full time in Wellington. A statement in big bold letters
from the Hurricanes. They've scored nine converted tries and won
this one tonight by sixty six points to twelve.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Huge win for the Hurricanes to start to the Super
Rugby Qualifying finals.

Speaker 3 (00:22):
Sixty six twelve twelve there.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
As you heard on the news Abbie Sport commentary last
night on top from the get go over the Brumbies
seventeen to nils after fifteen minutes thirty eight to seven
by halftime. A very impressive performance by the Hurricanes who
charged through to the semi finals after that win over
the Brumbies. Of course, it's been tough results against the
Brumbies at this stage.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
In this stage.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
They've had the win three of the last four seasons
over the Hurricanes at this stage, all those over in Canberra.
Thoughe they took the trip to Wellington, the Brumbies did
and rarely struggled in the wind and the rain last night.
Well let's look back on the game now and cast
our eyes ahead too what will be a very exciting
semi final in Wellington next weekend. Hurricanes assistant coach Brat

(01:08):
Evans is with us now in the ill Sport Breakfast
Morning to.

Speaker 4 (01:10):
You, brind morning.

Speaker 3 (01:12):
You must be happy.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
Coaches would be very happy, I'm sure with a consistent
and complete performance like that last night.

Speaker 5 (01:20):
Hey you mate, look a fe'd offer me that scoreline
when I was looking out my window yesterday morning, I
would have bitten your hand off.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
Absolutely, very impressive score.

Speaker 2 (01:30):
What was behind the team just coming out of the
block so quick and so ready and then carrying that
momentum on right through the game as you brought new
players in as well.

Speaker 5 (01:40):
Yeah, I think what was really pleasing was obviously in
the conditions the boys were still really brave and how
they played, and they backed their skill sets and sort
of trusted the game that's been serving us so well
this season.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Brummy's made a lot of mistakes. Stephen Larkham certainly not
happy with his team, speaking up after the game. Did
you force those on them, do you think? Or were
they just having an off night?

Speaker 6 (02:05):
No?

Speaker 5 (02:05):
No, I think you know, defensively, we look to it's
in areas of the game, get off, get off the
line really quickly and put them under pressure, especially in
those conditions and you know, as things are right on
the money, you know, in the wind and the rain,
the ball can be a little bit slippery, and those mistakes,

(02:26):
the percentage of those mistakes can be a little bit higher, and.

Speaker 6 (02:28):
Luckily for us, we forced pressure at the right to warns.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
Yeah, I guess with those conditions there might be that
the willingness not to not to use the ball as
much as you did in sixty six points, and that
the wind and the rain from last night, as you say,
a very impressive result. Was that an intent from that
team We're going to still go and play the way
we have through a lot of this season.

Speaker 6 (02:49):
Yeah, I think so.

Speaker 4 (02:50):
I think you know, it served us really well.

Speaker 5 (02:53):
The boys really believe in how we play the game
and how we want to play the game. And I think,
you know, looking across the part from from one to
twenty three, we've we've certainly got the.

Speaker 4 (03:05):
Players that can keep the ball alive.

Speaker 5 (03:07):
And I think the boys, you know, really stand a
jail quite nicely on this run into the playoffs.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
And you mentioned the bench.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
I guess, you know, we say it's the reserves bench,
but those numbers sixteen to twenty three last night in particular,
I guess you look at Nanny Poonivie when he came
on it just shows it's not really a reserve.

Speaker 3 (03:27):
Bench is and it's a key facet of the game.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
How important is the bench to the Hurricanes, especially come
the next couple of weeks of the playoffs.

Speaker 6 (03:36):
Yeah, messively important, you know.

Speaker 5 (03:37):
But games you want to go to those players to
provide impact and change the game in some way. And
I think we've been quite fortunate over the last two
or three weeks to give a lot of those boys
opportunities and games time on the field, and it just
makes turning up on Monday Tuesday difficult to pick the team,

(03:58):
and that's what you want as a coach, and so
makes the standard of training throughout the week really high
and those boys putting each other under pressure on the
training field, so hopefully that turns out a good performance
on the said day.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
And there was a bit of chatter this time last
week britn obviously the trip down to the Crusaders with
an understrength team. Some people would say shouldn't have done it,
Others said, great move. I guess you look at the
result last night the wider context of where you're at,
you'd be pretty happy that you used last week to
rest a few players and get them ready for what
was a great showing last night.

Speaker 5 (04:32):
Yeah, I mean, obviously it's it's been a long time
since we had our buy and we were through that
run home to the playoffs. We've had a lot of
Kiwi Darby's, so you know, tough, tough, physical games back
to back week to week. So I wouldn't say we
went down with understrengthed team. We'd made a few changes,

(04:52):
we had a few boys coming back from injury.

Speaker 4 (04:54):
We were lucky to give a few guys their.

Speaker 5 (04:57):
Debut games and that's special for anyone who who puts
on Hurricane Jersey, and you.

Speaker 4 (05:02):
Know, it just made that next week of training a
little bit testy.

Speaker 5 (05:07):
Boys wanted to get back, get back and get into it,
and it was Yeah, just for last night proved dividends.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
We had the most work gone in during the week
ahead of last night's game. I mean some obviously the
defensive pressure at the breakdown, I think it was pretty
impressive from what I could see. But yeah, what had
been I guess a main focus building up to last
night's game.

Speaker 4 (05:29):
Yeah, I think again we tried, really.

Speaker 5 (05:33):
We're quite purposeful at the start of the week just
to reinforce what our game was and how we wanted
to play our game against the bumby, So you know,
it wasn't too much different from week to week. We
previewed really well what they would bring in, and we
then went to what would be our strengths and just

(05:54):
you know, try to apply those under pressure, and then
obviously looking at the conditions that were coming in the
week in, how could we be smarter around those? And
then when and when it was so went off, we
just we you know, sort of just went into it
and and and just played played footing.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
How did it work from behind the scenes with the coaches,
we were you having to talk to the players much
or were they taking care of things pretty well out there?

Speaker 5 (06:20):
No longer we had plans, you know, if the weather
coming to a to a more extreme level, you know,
how how would we manage ourselves around the field.

Speaker 6 (06:31):
But you know that at the end of the day.

Speaker 5 (06:34):
I think it was quite you know, we could still
play decent rugby and that out there, and I think
the boys just adapted to what was in front of them,
how they could handle the ball and how how they
wanted to play. And you know, as I said before,
we were just really pleased on how they were still
brave and went through what they wanted to do with.

Speaker 2 (06:51):
We you are now in a performance like that last night,
do you actually now sweat over who you play next week?
Or is that almost irrelevant? Irrelevant and where the team's at.

Speaker 4 (07:02):
No, look what we'll prepare as we do every week,
whoever it is. I think you know the main thing
that we're happy.

Speaker 6 (07:09):
About is we're at home again.

Speaker 5 (07:11):
You know, we're in front of our friends, our families,
and that's what the boys really get up for. And
running out out of your home dressing room in front
of a full Henry stadium will be something that all
the boys will be pumped up for.

Speaker 3 (07:26):
Absolutely any preference at all.

Speaker 6 (07:30):
No mate, just home. I'm glad.

Speaker 5 (07:33):
I'll be sleeping on my bed and getting up and
getting ready for another game of rugby.

Speaker 2 (07:36):
Exactly how far away is this team do you think
from where it needs to be to post a good
semi final win and hopefully the following week have a
good win in the final.

Speaker 6 (07:47):
Oh yeah, great question.

Speaker 5 (07:49):
You know pressure does funny things to everyone, and you
know it's only going to.

Speaker 6 (07:54):
Go up from here.

Speaker 5 (07:55):
So it's about prepping the boys really well and doing
our homework and somehow trying to replicate those those scenarios
that we may face in the weekend and you know,
making sure that we leave no stone unturned and the
boys are in the right space.

Speaker 4 (08:11):
To not only be prepared, but again just you.

Speaker 5 (08:15):
Know, be be confident in what they've done throughout the
season and have that confidence to.

Speaker 6 (08:20):
Go in whoever we've got in front of us.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
See, he for young enough was absence the last couple
of weeks hasn't prevented some of the try scoring opportunities
and finishes created out wide Britain. But how likely is
he to be available for the semi final next week?

Speaker 5 (08:35):
Yeah, Will accounts he's he's rehabbing really well, he's training
really hard and you know it'd be great if he's
back in the mix. Those boys that have that have
taken the fieldom in that space in the meantime has
been unreal, you know. So again he'll be chomping at
the bit to go. But I'm pretty sure those boys
you're kin in the Holos, Josh Morby's won't be giving

(08:58):
up that jersey easy. So it will make for a
really exciting week on the training field and just.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
On the scheduling. I think all things appointing to a
Saturday game in Wellington next weekends, and I know that's
probably been the preference of the club. So that's an
eight day turnarounds from last night, but then a seven
day turnaround from next week into a possible final, whereas
your finalist opponent could have eight days. Has that been
weighed up and is Saturday next weekend your preference for
a semi final?

Speaker 5 (09:26):
I'm unsure, you know, those decisions have probably made a
little bit above my pay grade. I'll just get into
my work and I'm sure just to be ready to
go to Monday and prep for a full week. I
don't think, you know, coming off last week where we
had a shorter turnaround, I don't.

Speaker 6 (09:46):
Think we'll be too bothered.

Speaker 5 (09:47):
We'll just be ready to go and if it's a
semi final or final, we'll be pumped, regardless of who
we're playing or when it's playing, just that we're involved
in it.

Speaker 2 (09:56):
And just finally, Bren, what was the mood like in
the changing rooms last night after to the game. Obviously
two very big weeks, so hopefully two very big weeks
to go, but there would have been a bit of
celebration last night with a showing like that.

Speaker 3 (10:06):
I'm sure.

Speaker 6 (10:07):
Yeah, you know.

Speaker 5 (10:08):
Look we the team song got a good, good volume,
a good pitch, and I think we'll be just pretty
pumped if we can sing it again.

Speaker 3 (10:18):
Brilliant, Brent.

Speaker 2 (10:18):
Enjoy your weekend, Enjoy watching these next two games of
the playoffs today, and all the best for the week
and hopefully a couple of weeks ahead and then the
Super Rugby Playoffs. And congratulations again on a great performance
last night.
