Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well to preview the game. We head over to Perth
now and all Blacks and Hurricanes halfback Cam Royguards is
with us. Cam has made nine try assists this season
so far. That's three more than any other player. Cam
of course has played eight matches through the Canes, nine games,

(00:20):
starting seven of them, so he's had a pretty strong
season for the Canes so far. Once again and nice
that I'm Cam Royguard has been able to contribute this
year in a big level after his injury prevented him
taking part in a lot of last year's Super Rugby season.
We head now to Perth and Cam Royguard is with us.
Morning to your Cam, and I guess, firstly, the team's

(00:40):
been able to spend a few days away. I know
you went over there earlier in the week. How's that
been in terms of preparation for a big couple of
weeks of Super Rugby?

Speaker 2 (00:50):
You n it's been good. It's probably come a bit
later than other years. You know, last year we traveled
to the course to first sorry for the round line and
when we're here for a couple of weeks, so it's
good to I guess finally get on get on the
bird and for a couple of weeks, so it's good
to sort of spend some time together and you're not
just talking about rugby and seeing each other and camp

(01:12):
and stuff. So yes, it's been good so far, enjoying
each other's company and you hopefully look forward to I
guess getting some results. All were over here.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
Interesting last few weeks. Isn't it an amazing performance against
the waratas at home? A couple of tough results against
both the Blues and Crusaders, despite playing some great rugby
through some moments of those games and coming pretty close
to the ends. Where do you feel the sides out
at the start of these these big couple of games
across the ditch?

Speaker 2 (01:37):
Yeah, yeah, that's right. I guess the whole thing around
consistency is probably where we've probably tripped up a little bit,
you know, like you say, the Warrior performance was as
good as any and then obviously falling short. We're arguably,
you know, did things go away or we make them?
There the decisions and some moments that we're probably on
the other side of the results as well. So I

(01:58):
think it's already to spend around consistency, and I guess
that decision making under under pressure in those big games,
so hopefully I guess we can't dwell on them too much,
but hopefully we've learned from those games so that we
can execute the coming lenks and of.

Speaker 1 (02:16):
Those things like consistency and decision making, things that you're
happy and able to address this week, and confidence of
some quick fixes seating into a big couple of games.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
I guess, you know, Clark's been really good in that
space and trying to I guess give the boys. I
guess the learning, the visuals are sort of were that
time again, what would do better so we can improve
each week. But I guess that's probably something that you
just feel out there, and I guess that's probably the
reality of our group that's not as experiences some other years.

(02:46):
So there's only one had a learner, and that's I
guess through playing. So as long as we do learn,
I guess that we're we'll be getting in the right direction.

Speaker 1 (02:54):
And in just a few seasons, you've come from you know,
being a second second string half back, you know, your
start at time of the Hurricanes, and now obviously one
of the more experienced players in the group. And that's
a journey that's only taken a couple of seasons. So
do you feel like you're able to inject some of
your your own rugby experience into to some of those decisions,
some of the team bonding and things.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Yeah, I think so. Probably the thing that I sort
of have understanding that you notice just another game and
although you know I've played them, I've played some big
games super and I guess higher onnors as well. So
being able to I guess, I guess, although I'm still
relatively young, be that person that can help in those,

(03:35):
you know, those type games and when there's all the
pressure on, make sure that I'm making the right decisions
for myself and then helping, I guess guide the team
if I need to. So yeah, I guess, I guess
I am a little bit of that space. Yeah, I
guess I'm still learning as well.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
And You've had a few different guys outside you in
the number ten jersey this season so far, and next
up it's Ruben Love, who I'm sure thinking back a
few seasons ago when he had a bit of a
stint at ten, you would have played a little bit
of rugby next to him. But how good from your
end or what sort of you know, what impacts. Will
his presence in that number ten jersey running the kind
of make for the team this weekend?

Speaker 2 (04:12):
Do you think? Yeah, it's very exciting. We get on
really well and we're flet match for a couple of years,
so it's pretty exciting to I guess play onside him,
which is one thing, but to have him at ten
as well, so we'll be pretty fined. And we worked
together throughout the game, which is pretty cool. We obviously
know how good of an athlete he is, and I
guess I'm having Callen Hartman at the back. It's pretty exciting,

(04:36):
and he played well when he came on on the weekends.
Just being so he's getting his opportunity was pretty exciting.
And although I guess we have a few injuries at ten,
the ability to have Reuben step him, Yeah, it's pretty
exciting and it definitely yeah might think some I guess
a bit more expected and hopefully, yeah, we need to

(04:57):
get the job done.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
Can you give us a bit of an insight. Do
you change much about how you go about your prep
your your organization leading up to a game like this
when you've got someone new playing outside you.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
I think it's probably just a few more conversations. Well,
I understand that there's ten and all this year and
you know, oh, here's obviously coming off the bench and whatnot.
But I guess there's slightly different when you starting the
games and understanding has I guess his thoughts on thinking process,
and then when we're out there making decisions on the field,
there's no surprise he does something. I guess that's probably

(05:31):
a little bit different to other players. So I think
it's probably small conversations and more stuff probably off the
field for that cliche. He knows no unturned and the
respect that I understand that he wants to play and
we want to play, so then we can I guess
drunk towards around and.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
Yeah, keep we teams have really struggled over the ditch
this season so far. Obviously a lot of people are
talking about, you know, the improvements made across the towns
and what are you expecting these next couple of weeks
and has that been talked about? Just how tough a
lot of teams have found to travel anywhere in Australia
the season so far.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
Yeah, you haven't touched up too much, but I guess
it's pretty obvious that the Aussie teams are better this year.
I guess with the lots of the rebels that strengthen
has strengthened every team, and I guess they're at the
point now obviously had a few results not going away,
but there must wins for us, So we're going to
treat them as if we're playing, you know, for any

(06:29):
big team, because they are a big team. So I
guess the mindset's probably differently shifted competer previous years, especially
paying the force. You know, they're a strong side and
it's going to be hot, and yeah, like I said,
it's a must one for us for our season to
try to get sneak back into the top six, beating
teams that are above us on the table. So yeah,

(06:50):
we're really excited for the challenge. But you were definitely not.

Speaker 1 (06:53):
A lot and that Brumby's match, you know, Cameerra. We
just know how tough it is for any team traveling.
There have been one of the many that have that
have struggled in canber over the years. I imagine there's
a lot of motivation there for that fixture in a
week's time too.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
Yeah, definitely, I guess it's your bogie team. I don't
think I've beat them away yet, so it would be
good to sort of get to tack that one off.
But yeah, I guess main focus obviously is on this
week to try to get a result and then hopefully
we could back it up and get up to I
guess the Bumbies obviously another side that were the top

(07:30):
side or the top obvious team in previous years, and
I guess it's fit up again along with every other team.
So it's great, awesome how to live in there's no
easy games, so yeah, I love the stuff and it's
really exciting. So just yeah, one week, good.

Speaker 1 (07:45):
Time exactly and just on your year so far came
obviously following last year's disappointment. How nice is it being
able to be in Super Rugby, getting some good minutes,
being able to contribute well on the back of a
challenging here for yourself last year.

Speaker 2 (08:00):
Yeah, yeah, for sure, it's been good to you say,
get back and finished the zer well last year on
all them tour. And I guess now the challenge you
know is that I am, but so how I can
keep getting better and growing? You know, you have been
loving it so far, despite I guess the team results
and whatnot. You know, it's probably the highest amount of

(08:21):
minutes I've been playing into Gray ever for me. So
I guess the challenge is being able to contribute, like
say and play well each week. But I guess keeping
my body right, so I prepared to play those bog
minutes every week, wat chick and I'm loving you know
we'll get paid to do so. Yeah, live at the drid.

Speaker 1 (08:42):
Brittain't here, Cam Hi, Well, thanks for your time as always, Mate,
ready appreciate it and go well this weekend and of
course in Camber and next weekend. Might ready appreciate your
time on the show and all the best.

Speaker 2 (08:52):
Sweet things very much.
