Speaker 1 (00:00):
DearS Coppin's with us talking Trent and Dear's morning to you. Thanks,
thanks for your time, and firstly, nice to see the
sun out for a big Cup day.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
It's absolutely fantastic, isn't it them? You know, we've been
sort of waiting for this particular day. It's one that's
on everybody's mind every summer. But we'll be pretty fortunate
throughout the carnival's trend to move throughout December and January.
The track conditions have been favorable, the weather has been favorable,
and so we've got it certainly for exactly how we want.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
It for today, exactly right.

Speaker 1 (00:30):
Well, we know we've had a lot of rain lately,
but the weather is coming right today. So what's the
track going to look like for.

Speaker 4 (00:35):
Racing on the track will be playing a little bit
on the soft five stage, but that's going to probably
dry just a little bit. We've got a few northerly
winds coming through. And look, the track's going to be
in pristine condition, no question about it, or suit all horses,
so there shouldn't be any excuses there. And yep, so
we have everything's certainly made to wad as far as

(00:55):
the horses are concerned.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
Is Cup Day still what it was? Is there?

Speaker 1 (01:00):
You know, we know there's still a lot of interest
on a lot of people going today, but has it
struggled to get the attention do you think of it?

Speaker 3 (01:07):
Maybe the last sort of five years since COVID.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
I think the challenges have always been there for most
sporting industries. They don't sort of get the same crowd
as they used to get, say, twenty thirty odd years ago.
I mean the days of say, for example, Castletown back
in the nineties. You know you'd probably get twenty five
thousand people at the races that particular day when he
won his third Castletown. Rod Stewart was there as well

(01:30):
with his new bride, Rachel, and you know, people came
through the turnstiles and droves. But that has actually petered off.
And you know, we've had numbers. We'll get numbers around
the seven or eight thousand today, and that'll be quite
a comfortable number when you consider that the public stand
was demolished because of earthquake and it's very much a

(01:52):
tense city out there today. It looks fantastic in the fact,
and so the numbers aren't going to be as big
as they were those falcyon days. But nonetheless you're going
to get a respectable crowd at the other day, and it.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
Still seems to be a one that young people are
getting amongst DearS and enjoy a last day out there,
especially when you got weather like us.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
Absolutely, you know, I mean, they've got the young music
will be playing as well. I mean, there are so
many things going on in between races, this fashions. The
fashion this year should be big because they've got a
special area set aside this year, so that is going
to be That's all part and parcel of Cup days
anywhere in the world. The fashion plays a significant hand.

(02:33):
But then of course most of us purists are there
just to see the great racing, an action and the
iconic one ening Cup. Not the strongest one end cup
field we've seen for a while, but nonetheless it's always
always an epic one. There's probably no real standout. The
favored is paying round about the three dollar mark. He's
up against a very very useful field, a prominent field.

(02:55):
He won't get it easy, and the two mile race
never is. But in saying that though it should be
a great occasion for all contenders.

Speaker 1 (03:03):
All right, well, I'll get your tips. Then there's favorite there.
But yeah, any particular names of the horses for this
big cup race that anyone should be looking out for
in particular to have a wee fluff on.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
Well, it's a funny old situation, you know. I mean
my first business, I'm showing my age. It's in my
fifty fourth cup. I haven't missed one fifty four years now.
The first cup I saw was horse was Simon de
Montfort and he paid one hundred and eighty dollars for
a win in nineteen seventy two, and twenty seven years
later a horse called Miss Bailey one and paid one
hundred and forty. Now, funny that twenty seven year cycle.

(03:35):
It falls on today. So maybe, just maybe it's time
for one hundred and one shot. Who knows, but listen,
but listen In saying all that, though at a month
pretty keen on the Southerners, I think Rosso will play
a significant role, and also Mayor of Norwood. Now it'd
be great to see Mayor of Norwood when he's trained
by a master, trained by a master family and the

(03:56):
old man Brian Anderton had his eighty ninth birthday yesterday,
so it would be quite a fitting one of Mayor
of Norwood happen to win Rosso. Mayor of Norwood, Alan
Shouts has got a great record in the one in
a couple of recent years. He's got a horse called
Shibwey that'll be very very competitive, and a horse that
I tipped out last year on your program, a horse
called Trav. He was thirty to one last year and

(04:19):
he was a good thing beaten. He missed the kick
by twelve links and ran into force and I told
him good. He to stick with him and he won
the Orn Cup you may recall, and paid about twenty
two dollars. Now he's peaking, I reckon at the right time,
So look out. The Trav as a smoky. So I'm
actually going to be back in probably all those four horses.
They'll be probably my mainstay, and you know, we'll just
play around with that. But Rosso as a favorite contender

(04:42):
and maybe a roughy trav.

Speaker 3 (04:44):
All right, love it?

Speaker 1 (04:46):
Any other races that could offer some good punting tears.

Speaker 2 (04:49):
Yeah, absolutely. We've got the Loanland Steaks, the Ginny and
Holmes Loanan Stakes. That's going to be a very interesting
waste because it's part of the fully of the Year series,
and these horses will use them this race as a
stepping stone to the new Zeala Ducks. There's a filly
in there, excuse me, a fully in them called rock
a Donner, another good price to horse around about the
fortyen dollar mark. I would consider that she's a genuine
each way chance. I've been watching her. She's only a

(05:11):
lightly tried philly, but she gives me compression that Trent
them is the sort of track where her big, low,
long loping strides will suit. And I get the firm
it she just might run a big race today at
a big price. So she's paying around about the fortien
dollar marks. So have a look at her and Virginian
and Virginia homes Lowland stakes right stuff.

Speaker 1 (05:28):
Now, just just to wrap up group three, is this
race now, ken? Is it within you know, Trentam's control
to try and get that improved over time or is
that just sort of the state of things.

Speaker 3 (05:38):
At the moment.

Speaker 2 (05:40):
It is really, I mean, the quality of racehorse that
we have these days, they've got so many options to
choose from. There's these pop up races that come around
all the time, and that probably is where the big
money is, so that's where their trainers set their horses
for these for these million dollar races, and it is
a quite consequence the traditional race as they lose flavor

(06:02):
a little bit. And then of course you've got our
neighbors across the Tasman with big stakes going on, so
that also sort of taints our races just a little
bit too. So it is a bit of a struggle
to get the good quality horses that we had yesteryear
because of the competition that's going on. But in saying
that though, I think it's all about events these days,
you know. I mean you can go to the Crack
and millions, it's all about the event. You can go

(06:23):
to the Weapon Cup. Day to day it's all about
the event, and so you know, we've got to live
with it, don't we.

Speaker 3 (06:28):
Absolutely well, it's going to be a great day out
there days.

Speaker 1 (06:30):
I've been looking at some of the entertainment on offer
as well on the page this morning, and it looks
like it's going to be fantastic.

Speaker 3 (06:35):
So I hope it's a great day out there.

Speaker 1 (06:37):
The sun will be shining and hees hoping for lots
of fun and some successful punting as well.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
Good Man Adam, thank you indeed, have a great day.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
Teas. Thanks very much for more from News Talks, EDB.
