Speaker 1 (00:00):
So it was the Canes starting their season against Mowana
Pacifica at sky Stadium last night, nice Friday night weatherwise
in Wellington for it. That's here how the match played
out over on gold Sport on fifteen oh three am.
Jason Pine, Ross Bond and Matt Buck had the call.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Angus Gardner is a referee and onea Pacifica kickoff. They
are kicking from left to right as we look, that
is north to south here at Wellington's at sky Stadium,
digging in and trying to release out towards the left.
Pellegrini gives it on we'll kick down the left hand
side by by who the left winger, and he picked
it up and just as he was about to score.
(00:37):
Well he had scored. I thought the referee would call
it back toe Tarma Tuna to Etama and they just
will have a little check on this one. But towee
Tama Tuna to Tama the Mauana pacific A left winger
and reward for an excellent first seven minutes of play
from over the lord of Mowana out towards the left.
They can tell me to go and out to finging
(00:57):
Northfolk and he will go in in the corner flowing
back line movie. You can hear Ross Bonds it yells
of approval and for him Thinny Young and Northfolk. The
left winger for the Hurricanes goes and so the left
wing is in action a try a piece out towards
the right Josh Morby, and he does get it and
goes into the corner ice. Josh Morby was yelling for it.
(01:19):
Net Puck was yelling for them to give it to him,
and Josh Forby on his return to the Hurricanes, he
tops down in the seventeenth vot of the Hurricanes lead
at twelve five, with us on the Hurricane side, with
the Nadi now out towards midfield, so his face over
towards the left and breaking through a looking glass to
Thingyung and r Fole and he will go in for
trying number two for him, try number three for the Hurricanes.
(01:41):
They're running ball again through Jordan Barry Darcy. He can
set up figinghungon all fall. This is going to be
a first half head track. And as for the left winger, no,
he gives it inside. He was inside the dead ball area.
He's given it to scotsh Moreby and Morby's going to
score the try finging on Awfo was in the end
goal area in ask the rugby board. Three tries to one,
(02:02):
the Hurricanes have opened up a pretty comfortable first half lead.
Here halftime at sky Stadium on Goldsport and iHeartRadio, it's
the Hurricanes who lead Mowana Pacifica.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
By twenty four points to five.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
Half Sullivan goes through a gap heading towards the posts
and under the post he will go. And it's Josh
Morby who took the pass from Sullivan, and Josh Morby
with a hat trig of tries Stimmdfield Polico all sorts
of numbers, gives it to Johnny Barrett Harkeness to just
three up them out on the fast side, surely, and
then he goes braiding your say with a try for
(02:38):
the Hurricanes winer Pacifica though with a good back line move,
and they might it's got a try here through Pellegrini's
heads towards the line.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
Has he got it down the hairs? I think that's
a try.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
It's a try for Mowana Pacifica.
Speaker 3 (02:50):
Is that Patrick Pellegrini who slides through it?
Speaker 2 (02:53):
Comes to your say again stepping Braiden your say inside
the twenty two heading towards the try line. What it's
right right in your fae running like them?
Speaker 3 (03:02):
It feel back.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
It's the second of the night of the Hurricanes hit
forty and the Hurricanes kickoff twenty twenty six for them
anyway with a very impressive win. They've scored eight tries
and run away with it under the Friday night lights,
the Hurricane fifty two.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
Well what a pacifica ten here, good way to get
the season underway, scoring eight tries for the Hurricanes. That's
how it played out on Cold Sport last night. Here
where Ross Bond's summations of things right after full time.
Speaker 4 (03:31):
Yeah, look, it's a Hurricane's performance that they'll look back
on and they'll be happy with the five points. They'll
be happy with their opportunities that they've converted into tries.
But does some work to move as they move forward
in this competition. Some outstanding individual performance as Warner dunes
in the middle of that line. Outstanding first up performance
from the big Feller Morby and Finny Panofo on the
(03:52):
Wings show they have try scoring ability. Roy Guard dangerous
when he came on. Scrum was okay, lineout worked into
the game. Minor Pacifica probably will be.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
A little bit disappointed in their performance tonight. They led
a number of dries they shouldn't have.
Speaker 4 (04:07):
Their defense was a little bit leaky at times. But
again mccains will be happy. Their campaign is underway and
any time you score fifty odd points there's got to
be some pretty good moments of playing.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
There will be some.
Speaker 4 (04:18):
Times that the coaching staff will have their hand on
their head.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
All right, Well, there were Ross Bond's thoughts post match.
A special night for Warner Deurns. He certainly stood out,
didn't the six foot eight a couple of early jetters,
but took some good takes from the lineouts through the
course of the game. Of course, Wellington Bourne but pretty
much lived most of his life in Japan, but has
obviously kept his ties with Wellington alive very close and
(04:45):
of course here on a bit of a playing sabbatical.
Awesome to see him in Hurricanes' colors after a long
build up after his signing and about June July last year,
he spoke to Matt Buck after the game.
Speaker 5 (04:56):
Congratulations on your debut, first and foremost, how you feel
out they met.
Speaker 6 (05:00):
Feel good as exciting first game obviously coming back home.
It's good to be in front of the fans at
a stadium that I have always wanted to play, and
so it's really cool to be able to get out.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
Here and get on the field and play good game.
Speaker 5 (05:16):
You're very experienced football player these days. What did you
make to the speed of the contest?
Speaker 3 (05:21):
All right? It's quick.
Speaker 6 (05:23):
Rugby is getting quicker and quicker nowadays with all the
rule changes, and it's all going.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
To be a quick game.
Speaker 6 (05:28):
But it's good, quick, physical fun rugby.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
Do you enjoy going the eighty minutes?
Speaker 5 (05:34):
Do you'd like playing eighty minutes or did you expect
to play any minutes tonight?
Speaker 6 (05:38):
I love playing rugby, so put me up to play
ninety play as long as I can say yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
Do apologize for a bit of the quality of the
interview there but technical issues on the sideline last night,
but certainly get the sense of Warner Dean. It's been
pretty happy with that how it all went last night.
Billy Proctor was named on the reserves bench, so he's
probably thought he'd be coming on the field a little
bit later than he did. He was subbed on midway
through the first half when Brett Cameron picked up that
(06:07):
nasty knee injury. So but he propped us, spent a
fair bit of time on the field last night, and
he spoke with Bucky post match.
Speaker 5 (06:14):
So congratulations on your own performance coming and off the bench.
Unfortunately a pretty serious injury to your number ten. It's
a quick word for him.
Speaker 7 (06:22):
Yes, you know, sad to see the first game we
lose someone like BC. You know, don't look too great
walking past them, and you know having the whistle and
you know leaving the MEDSTA. I guess you diduce the pain,
but losing him to start off the season isn't a
great sign for us. But no doubt, as you saw tonight,
(06:45):
someone like Parks will step up and you know, next
man up and we'll get the job done.
Speaker 5 (06:50):
Did you always think it was going to be a
ted rusty tonight the first game up. We've had a
couple of preseason games, but everyone else has played a week.
We heard doublessy creef you speak during the week about
maybe they will be a bit of rusty.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
I hopefully not, but it probably was tonight.
Speaker 7 (07:03):
Yeah, well, watching the first round of games last week,
you definitely saw a bit of Russ. We talked about
the other team teams being rusty.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
But very physical, so that's what we expected.
Speaker 7 (07:16):
And you know, we definitely got there tonight with the
Mina team, you know, trying to get downhill and using
their big bodies like we thought.
Speaker 5 (07:25):
A couple of Dominica Republics just walked past us, a
guy you know very well. But are these these pleasures
when Hurricanes and more on in PACIFICA A lot of
made against mates here.
Speaker 4 (07:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (07:35):
A lot of the boys played or play with the
boys with their n PC and a lot of these
boys have I've been through the Hurricanes as well, so
you know it's cool to see them moving on with
their careers and you know it's still still going well.
And yes, so it's fun come up against your mates
and the Ravali there before.
Speaker 5 (07:54):
Let you go, you on any limited minutes for the
Hurricanes or if you is as it's slow bit slowly
but surely for you know you came in earlier tonight.
We're expected to play such a big part in this game. Ah.
Speaker 7 (08:05):
I think there might be a Christian for someone else
who controls the subs. But now I'm feeling feeling foot
and healthy you know, for this game and two three
months however long that it's been. So you know, it's
nice to get something that's under the belt and you
know you got a fear for you tonight what the
injury said.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
But yeah, heavy be out there. Have you been playing again?
In a nice little trip to Figen next week.
Speaker 7 (08:27):
Yeah, I don't know if it'll be well, we're expecting
it to be hot. We're not there on holidays, so
it's gonna be tough over there, but looking forward to it.
Speaker 5 (08:37):
Just wanted it's it's good to get away for a
couple of weeks. You go to Fijiani down to a
you know, I think the Warriors is a good get
away with the squad for a couple of weeks.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
Yeah, it is nice.
Speaker 7 (08:46):
You know obviously traveling together for it will be just
under two weeks, so you know, just so early on
last season, it's nice to be in a place where
all the boys can connect, you know, be together's team
and yeah, connect on a different level.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
I guess.
Speaker 5 (09:02):
Congratulations on the game tonight, and I we'll see you.
We'll see you back here in a couple of weeks.
Speaker 1 (09:06):
All through cheers, Mat, but he propped it there with
Matt Bark's sideline last night. Yeahs, as he mentioned there,
brought on far earlier than he probably expected given that
Brett Cameron injury and only a six to two split
in the bench, So it didn't mean that Billy Proctor
came on despite the injury to Brett Cameron at first five.
So yes, horrible scenes, rarely seeing Brett Cameron go down
(09:27):
so early on in the game, needing a lot of
help to get off the fields. The green whistle they
call it when they are getting oxygen delivered as well.
But a nasty knee injury for Brett Cameron. Coach Clark
Laidlaw was asked for the latest on that injury right
after full time.
Speaker 8 (09:43):
Yeah, it didn't look good. I'm not fully sure stepping
his knee. It's not his knee that he'd done his
sel it's the other knie. So yeah, he's off to
I think he went off to Osweald to be fair,
but yeah, it didn't look good. Yeah, really disappointing if
it's as bad as where I lift, you know, yeah,
I mean he watched saw Bloody Heart last year to
do a five and a half month acl a ton.
(10:03):
He's in great condition and an arsome preseason. He's been
leading the team really well, so it's a harmon law
to him. You know, it'll take a wee bit. Yeah,
we bet sink and anial need to get ound them
if it's you know, it's serious.
Speaker 1 (10:14):
Yeah, devastating, isn't it. As Clark laid Little referenced, Brett
Cameron spent much of last season recovering from his acl
and surgery and then game one of this season and
his other knee goes down in a pretty nasty injury
while taking a tackle. Jordy Barrett, Hurricanes captain, good mates
with Brett Cameron and he spoke about that post match too.
Speaker 9 (10:36):
Yeah, I mean it's a sick feeling when you see
a good made of yours go down and the green
whistle and it's a gutting blow to him after injury.
His tree has had and he works so hard and
he's very important to our squad. We saw the difference
he made at the back end last year when he
come back and yeah, with Reuben Bean out we need
(10:57):
our tens. So yeah, just first off disappointed as a
mate and yeah, gutted actually.
Speaker 1 (11:03):
And Jody Barrett, of course as captain, was his first
game back and Hurricanes colors in nearly two years after
his playing stint up in Ireland's Jordy was asked what
the feeling was like to be back in Kane's colors
at the stadium.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
Yeah, it was enjoyable.
Speaker 9 (11:18):
Like we where she trained really well during the week.
It's hard to, I guess, simulate a game like situation,
but I think the strength of our squad as we
really test each other and compete at training and our
boys us up well tonight. But you know, I think
credit to minor as well. Tanna trusted their deeper squad
as well. That a massive winning fig which not many
(11:40):
teams do. So to be honest, we weren't sure what
we're going to get tonight, but we knew we're going
to get a team that didn't go away and that's
what happened.
Speaker 1 (11:48):
Jordy Barrett there with his thoughts on the game last night.
So fifty two ten and I guess it's always hard
to know, isn't it quite how to get a gauge
on a result like that against an understrength Game one opponents.
But in the end of the fifty points is fifty points.
Eight tries is eight tries and a good confidence boost
I think for the Canes before a tough trip to
Fiji for the drawer next weekend. And oh, Jordi Barrett,
(12:11):
isn't it great to have him back? Huge influence from
the opening whistle as we all could have predicted, and
obviously stepping up to that captaincy as well. Warner Durn's
couple of early jitters in the lineouts, but geez, he
took some good ones through the game, didn't he, And
all signs pointing to him being an absolute force this
season certainly stands out on the field with his height,
doesn't he. And what a great sign that with Fechi
(12:32):
fitiong enough for and Josh moreby getting plenty of ball,
plenty of chances to dot down that the Hurricanes are
pursuing the expanse of open style of game this year.
They look exciting to watch and they won't always get
the space and gaps that ONEA Pacifica gave them at
times last night, but it's encouraging that that's how the
team is looking to play this year. The back line
(12:55):
is looking really sharp, isn't it. Finally, though, Brett Cameron,
you can't help but feel for the guy. If anyone
deserves a great injury free season this year is time
to shine. It's Brett Cameron, of course, spent most of
last year hampered by an ACL injury and twenty minutes
into the new season does his other knee. Absolutely devastating
(13:18):
for Brett Cameron and we're wishing him all the best.
Must be tough waking up this morning just thinking geez,
it's my season done again. And so with Ruben Love
still a month or so away, Harry Godfrey out for
the season, you'd have to think maybe Lucas Cashmore, who's
in the ranks will need to be a part of
the traveling squad to Fiji and Sydney, could even be
(13:38):
in for a Super Rugby debut in the ten jersey.
He's playing for the Hurricanes Hunters today the reserves team.
Callum Harkins slotted in from full back two first five
last night too, so could also be an option. Riddy
Higgins is back from injury himself. He's getting some game
time for the development team in christ Church today too.
I guess Riddy could always take the twelve jersey, moving
(13:59):
Jordy to full back and allowing Callum Harkin to make
that move to ten as well, but surely you'd say
Lucas Cashmore being a specialist, ten might be where the
Hurricanes have to go for the next couple of weeks. Overall,
though on last night, other than Brett Cameron's devastating injury,
I think a pretty positive opening effort from the Canes.
Certainly some good signs and foundations there for the season.
(14:20):
Other results, the Waratahs gave the Drewer their second defeat
last night thirty six thirteen the score there across the
Tasman Other games that continue the weekend's action Highland Is
hosting the Chiefs at five past seven, the Force versus
the Blues at nine thirty five, and then tomorrow's Sunday
afternoon Rugby Crusaders hosting the Brumbies in christ Church a
three point thirty five kickoff for that one. You can
(14:41):
catch live commentary of all those games over on gold
Sport on fifteen three AM and iHeartRadio, and of course
the Hurricanes game against the Drewer four thirty five next
Saturday afternoon. Great to have Super Rugby back, isn't it?
And great to see the Canes showing some promise early
