Speaker 1 (00:00):
Yeah, it means a lot. I think really fortunate to
have played all those hundred games here for the Hurricanes.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Just grateful that they've.
Speaker 1 (00:07):
Wanted me the song and then my body's still letting
me play the game that I love. Big milestone, something
that I'm extremely proud of as my family and partner.
But no, by no means it's a distress from the
job at hand, which is winning regand games.
Speaker 3 (00:28):
I think the big thing that you wouldn't see is
how much he helps other people during the week. So
whether that's us as coaches, other leaders that loose forward group,
or the team in general. He puts a lot of
thought into how he helps other people. He's got a
really nice way around them around like putting his arm
around people who needs to and give them a little
(00:48):
nudge when he needs to.
Speaker 4 (00:51):
H twenty nine to nine here on the All Sport
Breakfast comments there from Dupless and his Hurricanes coach Clark
laid or ahead of Dups is one one hundred Super
Rugby appearance for the Hurricanes co captain Tonight. What a
special occasion for this team and celebrating someone that is
such an integral part of the Hurricanes current success of course,
(01:11):
the milestone is celebrated as part of Super Round. Down
in christ Church. It's Hurricanes versus Brumby's Hurricanes looking to
bounce back from the extra time defeat to the Chiefs
last weekend. Let's head back down to christ Church now.
Kane's assistant coach, Jason Holland is with us. Morning to you, Jason.
We talked to Jason Pine just a few moments ago,
absolutely raving about well, everything going on in christ Church,
(01:33):
the new stadium and the buzz around the city. I
know you've been there for a couple of days too.
How's it been getting prepared for a big game as
part of a big round of the competition.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
Yeah, it's awesome. They're the real buzzer in the town
and it's awesome to get to christ Church and see
the progression of where the place has got to and
the buzz that's around around the new stadium. So Nah,
it's a really happy and everyone's looking forward at the
sun shining and give me some great footing and some
in a couple of beers drunk by the punters too.
Speaker 4 (02:03):
While the looks of it certainly does look like it
the brand of rugby we've seen from the Hurricanes this year,
though Jase would suggest you'd be pretty excited as well
to play under another roof, adding to the comforts and assistance.
Yet I guess when you get to Dunedin as well.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
Yeah, like obviously, Yeah, we're priding ourselves on learning how
to play in all conditions, but definitely when you've got
a roof on, we want to play with speed, There's
no doubt about that. So yeah, we were looking to
use the ball and the Bumbies are doing the same,
so it should be a hell of a game.
Speaker 4 (02:33):
Yeah, Well, looking back on last week, a brutal contest
I think many would say worthy of a playoff game
come later in this season, but narrowly falling short to
the Chiefs and extra time up there in Hamilton. Are
you reflecting on anything of concern from that game or
was it just a few unlucky moments that cost you
in the.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
End, Ahount, You're always going to get luck that goes
either way. So we just we had a really good
look at what we could control. Yeah, and we're not
probably concern is not the word, but a real good
opportunity for us to really feel that type game. What
are the big moments and what we do a little
bit differently with our game drivers. So yeah, we felt
(03:12):
we let the Chiefs off the hook in the last
sort of twenty minutes, maybe gave them the ball too
easily and let them play in the right out of
the field. But yeah, the other games, aren't they That's
what's going to happen in the last and the running
now from now on and see befooty, they are going
to be big games and be the team that can
sort of stick to their identity. But make sure that
you understand how the what are the big moments and
(03:33):
how you win. And the Chiefs are better than us
last week, so it's a great opportunity for us to
figure that out and understand.
Speaker 4 (03:39):
Why you mentioned identity there. As you've gone through the
first couple of months of the competition, has that identity
you planned for the team at the start of the
season changed or adapted differently through the season so far? Oh?
Speaker 2 (03:53):
No, I like the boys are awesome. The boys just
buy in and they want to play a good style
of rugby. They understand and be balancing it. But no,
nothing changes the boys. I think I've said to a
few people, you know, the scripts bring together for quite
a while now and really clear and how they have
fun and how they enjoy their rugby, and that won't
change and as long as the boys are energized, we'll
(04:16):
all have some fun and hopefully we just get the
little bit of balances to make sure we get over
the line and games right. Last week, we.
Speaker 4 (04:22):
Know the team has a big schedule coming up leading
into playoffs. Obviously the buyers are done. Some big derby
still ahead too. On the back of the eighty four
minute game last week. How are the bodies and the
energy levels holding up?
Speaker 2 (04:34):
Uh yeah, well, obviously we're eleven games if we were
to make a final in a row, which is just
the way the drawers, and we'll just manage that. We've
actually had a probably had a little bonus this week
with the flooding and Wellington something that good was to
come out of it was around we couldn't really train
Monday Tuesday, so the boys are fresh and we've done
some indoor sessions on Tuesday and couldn't do anything on
(04:57):
Monday and just train once today, so we're confident where
our games at and skills the boys needs. So quite
like the idea of us having a nice fresh week
this week to set us up for the next couple
of weeks, And just.
Speaker 4 (05:12):
On last week, there were a few subs later in
the game Dupless if he came off, cam Royguard was
brought off in the very early stages of that extra
time period. These guys are your leading players. Can you
maybe just explain the moves to fans who may have
been wondering why some of those subs were made at
a crucial point of the game.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
Uh, yeah, that's too much to explain, really, boys, what's
best at in the game for that time and what
are the situations that we've talked around technically and tactically
are things that we just make decisions on and you know,
they've they're both you know, we're pretty happy with exactly
what happened there and guys coming in and making the impacts.
(05:52):
So yeah, it's you can't expect guys to still be
at their best. And if you look really closely at
the game, like the benefit we have rather and just
having a snapshot at it, you'll see what you'll see
probably why those subs were made. All right?
Speaker 4 (06:09):
In general, what are the strengths the team needs this
week to take on a bit of a Canes bogey
team the form of the Brumbies.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
Mat We know that Brumbies, they're obviously got a mess
a pack, they love them all, but they're actually gone
their game and they're obviously playing some really good footy
as well. So it's a bit like we played the
Chiefs last week. We knew the physicality that they were
going to bring around breakdown. We've got the same again
with the Bumbies this week. So it's the cracks of
very think for our game in for the years. So
(06:38):
he is going to have to be up again in
have you heover's got the calmness to be able to
take their opportunity. It's going to be a tight game.
Speaker 4 (06:46):
And Jason, you've been a part of this coaching team
on and off at the Canes for a long time now,
and the Hurricanes have always been known as a great
attacking team, scoring brilliant triers, creating open space. But when
you return to this year, how impressed have you been
with we're the team defense has sort of got to
I guess a lot of credit also goes to Corey
Jane for this too.
Speaker 2 (07:06):
Yeah, he's been coaching, the coaching the d for the
Canes since he was playing for the Canes, So you
know he's mate's doing really well coaching. Rather the boys.
Boys are all coaching really well. I think the group's
pretty aligned and I think that's helping our d. Obviously
we're doing some really good things and making some good
decisions of defense. But I reckon our game is in
(07:27):
our tax complimenting our defense, and that we're making sure
we're playing in the right areas and not putting our
D under too much pressure with a poor kicking game
as an example. You know some things we may have
been guilty of in the past. So I reckon the
continuity and the alignment between the coaches is right up
there at the moment, which is helping all aspects. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (07:47):
Great, and a special night ahead as well. Do your
co captain celebrating has one hundreds Hurricanes match. You were
a part of the Canes coaching staff in twenty nineteen
when he was first called in for his debut seven
years ago. Now, what do you remember of that young
Keene flanker that was starting to get noticed at the
Wellington Lions and the NPC and brought into the Canes.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
Yeah, mate, I remember him coming through and He's an
awesome example of somebody who's just matured and learned and
continued to stay open to learning and get himself to
a space now where you know he's been inspirational for
our boys. And you talk to anybody around who's anything
(08:29):
to deal with the Hurricanes, whether our fans or whatever,
and they'll say, what an unbelievable character Boops is looking
after people and making sure he's doing the best for
people around him. So that's been a bit of a
journey for Boops. A he's coming as I think Gibbon
might have brought him to Wellington from from Hamilton right
back in the day. And we've had some awesome old
(08:49):
combos with Boops along the way, and his works can
be better and he's matured into pretty special part of
the Hurricanes these days, and I'm really happy for I'm
going to be a great old journey. I read his
book actually when he when he eventually writes a book,
it to be a great book. I reckon. I've got
his younger days through his early twenties.
Speaker 4 (09:07):
Yeah, I bet you were there for as all bakes
Tabu last year too, though, And I think it's pretty
obvious the work he put in ahead of that and
since getting that call up to.
Speaker 2 (09:15):
Yeah, yeah, and then just really learning along the way
what he's about and who he is the person. I
think it has been massive for Deeps. You know, he's
always been awesome seven probably one of the best best
around around getting on the ball and throwing up opposition
thing's ball. But I think he's learning around what his
week needs to look like to play well and how
he can really influence a team and that he's playing
with has been one of his biggest growths. And now
(09:37):
he can just go and play his games. So I'm
delighted that he never He nearly nearly signed to go away,
you know, eighty months ago to go overseas, but his
decision based on his loyalty to the Canes and wanting
to be an All Black and play one hundred games
for the Canes made I'm so delighted from of where
he's got to.
Speaker 4 (09:55):
Yeah, and no doubt, as you say, with the type
of person he is, the team will want to put
in that extra sp for him tonight.
Speaker 2 (10:01):
Yeah, We'll just just watch a couple of little videos
for Doups this morning before we came to Captain's run
and Yeah, there's definitely a steely determination to make sure,
you know, we put in a performance at deserve that
Teeps deserves.
Speaker 4 (10:16):
Yeah, great, Well, all the very best, Jase, enjoy the
experience of being part of things at the new stadium
down there this weekend, and all the best of the
game against the Brumbies.
Speaker 2 (10:24):
Yeah cool, thanks mate, Jeez.
Speaker 4 (10:26):
Jason Holand Hurricane's assistant coach with us here on the
All Sports breakfa someone that has sort of been a
big part of Duke Leski's big moments through his career.
So one hundred games for him tonight. I still just
can't quite get my head around that whole cam Royguard
sub from last week. Heard Clark laid Law sort of
give a similar answer to what Jace just did there
during the week and they say they had their sort
(10:46):
of stats or reasons for it, but I don't know,
just bringing off your best player one minute into the
extra time period just felt slightly bizarre. I thought Stephen
Donald summed it up very well on the Sky commentary
at the time.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
What a moment this is taking off probably the game's
best player.
Speaker 4 (11:03):
So yeah, interesting. We'll see where those tactical substitutions go.
For the rest of the season for the Hurricanes. But
you can't blame Eddionarde for anything happening in that last period.
But it was just surprising to see your top half
back taken off, not looking like as an observer, not
looking like he needed to go off in terms of
(11:25):
energy levels or anything. But yeah, just an interesting call
and yeah, Hurricanes coach is quite defensive about it this week,
which has been interesting. For more from News Talks B
