Speaker 1 (00:02):
Had time out of talk Central League football here on
the show. Our rotation this week sees us talking the
men's competition. Great to welcome back to the show Joe
Circe from the Tackled podcast. Morning to you, Joe House things.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Yeah real good, Adam, and hopefully you enjoyed.
Speaker 3 (00:17):
Your break, no doubt you're now all tanned, re energized,
and ready for the remainder of the winter sports season.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
All set to go nice and ready. Well, let's look
at the Central League overall, Joe, Mirramar Rangers on top.
Are a few teams still very much in that close
chasing distance to them. So, after a month or so
of the competition, what have you made of things so far?
Speaker 2 (00:39):
Yeah? Sure, we're up to round six.
Speaker 3 (00:41):
And I'm going to use a cycling analogy, Adam. You know,
in cycling, what normally happens is you have the main
bunch and they all work together and they draft behind
each other to conserve energy, and that's called the peloton.
But the top air fleet's the top cyclist. They normally
form a breakaway group. They create a bit of a
(01:03):
gap and they work amongst themselves to maintain that gap.
And I think we've got something similar in the Central
League this season, we've got the top four teams, like
you say, Miramar at the top.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
They were there with four wins in a drawer.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
They're on thirteen points, followed by Western Suburbs, Wellington Olympic
and Napier City Rovers. Bear in mind Napier City Rovers
have a game in hand because while you're away, Adam,
we had a bit of a cyclone warning in the
North Island, so the Island Bay United and we were
meant to travel to Napier.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
That game didn't happen, so Naples still part of that group.
They've had three wins, one draw.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
None of the teams have won all these games, but
where they've suffered a draw or a loss, it's been
when they've played amongst themselves. So no teams from the
peloton that's clubs like Patoni, Ireland Bay, Waterside, Corry. None
of them have been able to beat one of the
leaders top four, the force four teams at the top.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
All right, well, good analogy there. Let's go to the
games today, Joe, one of the teams at that top end,
West's at their home turf hosting the Phoenix Reserves.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
Look, I think Wests need to win this and I
say that because amongst that top four, they may be
the weakest link.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
They started the season with a nil draw.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
Up in Napier. They'd probably be happy with the point.
They were unlucky. Maybe they were unlucky to lose to
Wellington Olympic at home at Endeavor Park. They were down
to ten men and they considered the goal later on.
They have beat an FC Western, three Nel, Ireland Bay,
they beat six Nel.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
The saturd has just been They beat Upper Heart two
to one.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
I think to really force their predigit credentials they need
at least three points. I think they need three points
to stay with the bunch up the front. From a
Wellington Phoenix Reserves perspective, I think we've got an interesting scenario.
So obviously Chris Greenacre was confirmed as the coach for
the Wellington Phoenix A League team. There's one huge asset,
(03:07):
one huge benefit that Chris will bring is he's been coached.
He's been in charge of the Wellington Phoenix reserves for
a number of seasons, so he's got this incredible knowledge
of all these players that have come through the academy.
That should be an asset for the A League team
going forward. But for all those young players they'd be
looking at. That relationship with Chris has been an opportunity
(03:30):
to force their way into the A League team. So
it'll be interesting to see how and if you know,
we see Chris Greenacre involved from you know, trialing players
in the Central League to test their merits for an
A League slot next season. Talking about young players in
the Phoenix reserves, they went down to one to Napier
(03:50):
up in Naper last weekend. Their goalscorer was a young
player called Ben Trendbef. He's a year twelve student, so
he's probably one for the future.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
All right, Well remember that name and Neva Park twelve
thirty for that one that's got a Patoni. They're at
home hosting the traveling Napier City Rovers.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
I had a really good chat with Stephen Hoyle, who's
coach of the Newcastle Jets Ninja A League team, so
that's the women's team. He obviously had a long association
with Napier and when I asked them about this fixture,
he said, look, Memorial Park is a tough place to play,
you know, Patoni, they've normally got a young squad. They
(04:28):
normally got a well motivated squad PA Tony.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
Last weekend they were at David Farrington. They lost for
one to Miramar.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
They'll acknowledge and respect that these top teams are good,
but they've got their own ambitions.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
They don't want to be losing to these top teams.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
For one, they will be looking to say, look, amongst
all the Peloton teams, we believe we can you know, score.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
Some points from the top.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
This might be a good game to watch in the
sense of like Ken the youngsters from Botany. You know,
I've seen them play a couple times. One thing about
them is they got really good team spirit. They seem
to have good unity. They'll be saying, look, welcome here
in Napier, but we're going to give you a good game.
And like Stephen Oyle said, it's always a good fixture.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
All right, one o'clock sorry, one fifteen kickoff for that one.
Then at two forty five Waterside Corori at home versus
the leaders Mirima Rangers.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
Waterside Corory first four games this season they lost. They
enjoyed their first winning the season last week against FC Western.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
At Krory Park.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
Although you'd be looking at Merrimah and saying they'll be
looking at this to sort of force their hands to
cement this spot up the top. Last weekend we saw
Connor Gall scored three goals, so you've got a hat
trick for Mirrama. He currently leads this Golden Boot competition
with five goals in the Central League thus far.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
Kind of gaul.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
Interesting story with him is in twenty twenty two, He's
an Englishman. This first season in the Central League was
twenty twenty two. He actually played for Wellington Olympic and
in the very last game of the season Olympic, we're
like on forty two points, Murma, we're on forty points.
Whoever won that day would take the championship, would take
(06:18):
the Central League Premiership.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
And it was Connor.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
Goal Gaul who scored the goal to give Wellington Olympic
and won their lead and to take the title.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
So he's now at Mirrama.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
I think they are enjoying his services. Like I said,
keeps binging in the goals. I was actually at Kepiti
Park this week and despite all the rain, the surface
is looking really good without blemish. So I expect to
see more goals from mirramar in this fixture.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
Okay, speaking of goals Wellington Olympic, five of them scored
from them last week. They're in that long jam for
second spot. They head up to Maidstone Park for Upper
Huts City. What do you reckon about this one?
Speaker 2 (06:57):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (06:57):
Interesting when I look at LASTUS results in the fixture Olympic,
weren't that convincing. Actually in Maystone Park last season they
beat Upper Heart one nil in the return fixture at
Wakefield Park.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
It was a goal of straw.
Speaker 3 (07:11):
So even though last year won the Olympic, they had
an all conquering team and their form at the start
of the season when they played Upper Heart was top notch.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
They were banging in goals against everyone.
Speaker 3 (07:22):
They found Upper Heart a tough trip, so it'll be
interesting to see how that rivalry goes this weekend and
if Upper Heart can outdo the Greeks all.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
Right, And then wrapping up the round one Sunday game
this week with Island Bay, they have the trip up
to Tananaki to meet FC Western.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
Well, it's only Round six, but this game already has
got survival status all over at FC Western, New Boys
to the Gray from New Plymouth. Five games, five losses,
some of them were quite heavy losses. They know that
hosting a team like Ireland Bay, they need to get
some points from this fixture. Ireland Bay where if they
(08:00):
had it tough. So they played Cory first up they
won four nell. Since then they played all of the
top teams. Weren't able to score any points from those
top teams, so they'll be looking to get back on
the register, get some more points in the bank account.
This is a you know, crunch game for both teams already,
even this early in the season.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
If C Weston have landed a new signing or a
new arrival, a man called a quissi agg Yukum and
he's Canadian. He's a twenty four year old.
Speaker 3 (08:30):
It's meant to be qualities played professional football in Canada.
I think if see Weston will be looking at him
to maybe change their fortunes.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
Okay, well, there are all the games for across the weekend. Joe,
thanks for your time. Has always and enjoyed the weekends football,
and we'll see if there's any change to that palette
on your speak of come the end of the round.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
Yeah, it'll be nice to see someone in the peloton break,
you know, score a bit of an upset.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
I think the league needs that. But yeah, bring on
some good football.
Speaker 1 (08:56):
Good on your joke, enjoy the weekends football, Appreciate your time.
