Speaker 1 (00:00):
News talks'd be will Round three of Netballs A and
Zed Premiership kick starts here in Wellington this afternoon at
four o'clock at tesp Arena. The Central Polse, who are
one from two so far this season, looking to bounce
back from that loss of the Tactics last weekend when
hosting the Stars in the Capitol this afternoon. The Stars
featuring some pretty familiar faces for Pulse fans of course,

(00:22):
Shooter A Media Warmsley moved up north in the off season.
Martina Salmon as well, former Pulse player, is in Stars
colors this season too. Well, let's head into the Pulse
camp now and chat to Paris Mason, Pulse defender. Morning
to you, Paris, thanks for your time and all the
Stars also one from two to start the new season
as well. Does that suggest things will be a pretty

(00:44):
tight game this afternoon.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Yeah, obviously expecting to be a really close and tight match.
Obviously we're both coming off losses that we probably were
a bit disappointed about for both teams, so I think
this weekend would just be great. Obviously, it's still early
in the season so connections are still form, but it's
definitely going to be a good match.

Speaker 1 (01:01):
What made it disappointing last week to go down to
the tactics.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
Yeah, we were going up against the great side, but
we definitely think we could have competed more than what
we did. I think we were out of system, out
of structure, and obviously they pushed us to be like that,
which was unfortunate for us. We definitely were disappointed knowing
that our potential wasn't there that night, and we've got
so much more to give, So I think coming off
a loss like that when you weren't at your best
is always hard, and we're just grateful that it was

(01:27):
only round two, so we've got plenty more room for
improvement and that's all we hopeful week and week out.

Speaker 1 (01:33):
As we know, it's a new look team this year
for the Pulse. At the start of the season, as
you all got together, how much time through the season
did you expect it to take to adapt to the
new faces, some of the new combinations and find your
own I guess in a new era for the Pulse.

Speaker 2 (01:48):
Yeah, uncertain. I mean, I think we had a really
good preseason. Obviously we didn't have many preseason matches to
really get us going, but at the same time, We
obviously had little Lily Gorman brown out for game one,
which obviously she's a key role in our starting she
even so having her back game one. I think connections
are always going to take time, especially with how little

(02:09):
time we've been together, But you know, we just got
to keep trying, got to push through trainings. Obviously the
weather this week didn't help our our training schedule, but
obviously we just got to try our best to make
our connections as quickly as we can.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Yeah, what's been the most significant change to the team
this year?

Speaker 2 (02:24):
I think for me, it's just been the energy that
the new girls have brought in. I think it's definitely
changed the environment in terms of they just have come
in with such enthusiasm, such grateful, being so grateful to
you know, be in this position of playing professional netball.
They've come in with just such fresh energy, which I
think for you know, people like us that have been
around this environment for a little bit, it's just a

(02:45):
breath of fresh air. Knowing that they're coming in, they
want to be here so much, They work so hard
and constantly just want to absorb all the knowledge that's
around us. So having that kind of environment, she's definitely
been really fresh and just really enjoyed that type of
energy within our training environment.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
And with a couple of the Silver Ferns players heading
over to Australia for this year, how much responsibility have
you felt to take on some more leadership tasks this year, Paris,
given you're now one of the more experienced players in
the team.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
Yeah, definitely. I mean we've always had such a strong
personnel within the pulse of strong leaders and you know,
I've always had so much more experience over me and
losing all of them was a tough blow. But being
able to gain the opportunities to step into a leadership
role alongside Emilia and it's definitely something I'm truly truly
benefiting from. I love being able to be in that

(03:36):
space learning off one of the best, and obviously that's
just an area of my game that I'm really wanting
to grow. So I'm grateful for the opportunity. Obviously i
missed my mate, but it's definitely a place that I'm
enjoying all right.

Speaker 1 (03:49):
Well, speaking of mates, a long time teammate of yours
and media, Walmsley is back in Wellington this afternoon, now
in Stars colors, though how do you prepare to take
on someone in such strong form and of all Pulse
players and fans certainly know what she's capable of.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
Yeah, it's definitely going to be a bit funny watching
her run out on the opposite side. You know, an
arena that she clasifies his home, So I'm phil Wellington
will welcome her home even though she's against us, And
I did tell her that. I said, she's staying with
me out of the game, but I said, oh, you
might have to give an uber home if you beat me.

Speaker 1 (04:23):
Have you played against her before? Oh?

Speaker 2 (04:26):
No, I've only ever played with meals obviously, We've always
have been in the pulse a minute she came down,
So I haven't played against her other than this year.
But you know, we just have to see how it goes.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
Yeah, how do you prepare to face someone like her?
Does it take a lot of extra energy?

Speaker 2 (04:42):
Absolutely? I mean she's absolutely on form at the moment.
She's come off a really great season last year and
she's enjoying that connection with her and Martinez. So I
think going up against her, I'm just going to have
to give everything I can. I think me and Holly
have a really good shot at disrupting those two and.

Speaker 1 (04:57):
Wow, we just got to give out, give her our.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
All and you know, push the anything that comes at us.

Speaker 1 (05:01):
And of course Martinez Sam and who you mentioned there
as well, ex pulse player too. When you're up against
former teammates, does it make your job easier because of
the familiarity you have with them as players or is
it I get extra tough knowing what their skills and
threats are.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
Oh no, a bit of both. I mean, obviously they've
gone out and experienced new coaching and they're always going
to be adding to their toolbox. But at the same time,
like you said, I've been playing against them for a
little while, so I hope I've got some tricks up
my sleeve too, you know, push them around a bit
and hopefully manage to put them off their game just
enough for us to be able to, you know, get
get over the line and take.

Speaker 1 (05:36):
The win and just to wrap up Paris without the
silver fans or a lot of the silver fans in
the compass. Yet, does that help the players chances of
getting noticed by the likes of the National selectors a
bit more? Could it have a benefit where the depth
of netball is a bit more exposed for people.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
Yeah, I think there's a couple of benefits. So obviously
we've seen a new influx of like the imports so much,
and that's going to bring new excitement to our league.
And it's great for the you know, the viewers being
able to see new personnel that's been you know, all
over the world and bringing their own knowledge. But for
our own homegrown, you know talent, I think it's an
amazing opportunity. You know, it's not often you get a

(06:12):
chance to steep up into a role. There's not many
of us that get to do what we get to do,
and for them to be able to get that opportunity,
I definitely think it's going to expose lots of the
young talent. Obviously, think we see a lot of the
New Zealand I'm twenty ones coming off of their World
Cup stepping into these teams. So I think it's an
amazing opportunity and also for the funds going over the
SEC and I also think them being able to grow

(06:32):
their game, being able to go up against them, it's
just going to help us as New Zealand and whole.

Speaker 1 (06:37):
I think they're great, well, all the best of the
starts tonoon at tsp Arena Paris. Thanks for your time.
