Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, something pretty interesting happening in Round three of Wellington
at Premier Club Netball today. Orienta Rongatai are playing Saint
Mary's in prem one at eleven this morning at Uncle Tungy. Well,
what's interesting about that the two teams have the same coach? Yes,
Palessa Simou are still warts and longtime servant of Wellington
Netball mentors both sides obviously orient Rogatai being a senior
(00:22):
club team and Saint Mary's a college team, but both
in the same grade this season, and they're up against
each other today, so I really wanted to find out
how that's going to work. So great to be joined
by the coach yourself, Pelisa Simou to chat about things.
Morning to you and Polisa. Thanks for your time. This
will make for an interesting day, I'm sure.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
Yeah it is.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
It's probably something that's unique to everybody else, but pretty
much normal for those who are involved in netble in
this space.
Speaker 4 (00:48):
Yeah great, How do you go about it?
Speaker 1 (00:50):
You've got your two teams, obviously, Saint Mary's a college team,
orient Rongotai out East obviously a senior adults team in
the competition. How do you, I guess, firstly, go about
during the week preparing to take on a team you're
pretty familiar with.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
Yeah, it's an interesting build up.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
I do prioritize foror netball prosesss always. It was pretty
much made clear and to just clarified between the two
clubs and the two teams when it came into the
point where we were facing each other.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
In terms of the build up, it's.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
An interesting space trying to put both hats on but
still trying to keep it technical and in all of
that sort of things in terms of preparation for both
teams as well to make sure it's a competitive game.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
The college side of things. And you know, we've seen
a few teams come and go from PREM one. Obviously
Wellington Girls have spent a bit of time in there
the last couple of seasons as well. Just in general
for a school light sub Mary's how special is it
being able to take on the top clubs in PREM one.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
It's for us it's a real privilege.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
I mean, the reality is we are never going to
beat at the top teams such as PC one in
turn East one as well, but I for us, it's
part of the bigger picture in terms of preparation for
the long term plans in terms of the regional and
national competitions for secondary schools as well. So it's awesome,
(02:14):
it's great for it's great experience.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
It's a bit of.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
A I feel for the young players who's very new
to Prem one, but it's a great build up for
them as well.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
Great at a club like Aures tell us how how
they're tracking this year, and and I guess what you
what you get out of coaching them as opposed to
a college team.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
Yeah, so I mean Oriental a wrong attire maple club.
That's I've just gone into PREM one this year. Last
year when they made the step up into prem from
Prem Troo, and.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
So it's exciting for the club.
Speaker 3 (02:46):
It'sciting for just in terms of the small for a
small club being able to be.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
Competitive in that Prem one space. So really proud of
their achievements. But it's a it's a bigger picture stuff
as well.
Speaker 1 (02:59):
So I know the question that a lot of people
will be asking Pelisa is you get to the game today,
you know both teams, What do you do during the game?
Speaker 4 (03:06):
Where do you stand? What do you do?
Speaker 3 (03:09):
Yeah, it's quite because I'm going to be sitting on
Saint Mary's College bench, and usually sometimes when that happens,
I find myself talking to both teams even though I'm
coaching one team in particular on game day. So it's
going to be an interesting space that I'm just hoping
it'll be a really good display of skills and quite
(03:29):
competitive for both teams as well.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (03:31):
Great, Now you must only take on these two teams
at least and probably more for the year, because you
absolutely love the sport, and you say a lot of
people do similar things, find themselves with teams that meet
each other through seasons.
Speaker 4 (03:42):
You know, tell us about your.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
Passion for the game and what brings you out to
the courts and the training courts weekend week out.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
Oh, I think it's a real privilege. I've always seen
the coaching. I mean, I've been playing the game for
such a long time, and the transition as the coaching
was probably just over stake. But also because I really
do enjoy the game, and part of why I do
what I do is because I want to give back
to the sport that gave me so much. So I'm
(04:09):
I'm it's a real privileged position to be in, and
I'm very very lucky to do it.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
And you were acknowledged by by netbor New Zealand their
recent service awards as well for a very long involvement,
as you say, a player turned into sort of coaching
and administration. How special is that being acknowledged by your
peers in a sport you love.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
It's a it's a very nice acknowledgment to be acknowledged
by your you know, like you said, by your own
peers in terms of the service that you give to
the sport is as special I do, you know, I don't.
I don't do it for that sort of thing, but
it's it's nice to be acknowledged. And I had to,
(04:48):
you know, really acknowledge those who you know, have paid
the way as well.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
And and there's.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
So many people that I've been able to impart my
knowledge into the game, into their development as well as
as the sport as as well. There's so many people
there I want to acknowledge, but it's you know, it's
not just me. I take this with me and carry
those that have come with me as well.
Speaker 4 (05:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
Great, You've obviously been involved in the sport, as you say,
for a long time, several decades, and you're at both
ends of the spectrum now in terms of senior club
level and.
Speaker 4 (05:18):
High school level.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
How is in your view netball going is in terms
of making sure that females and young angatahi around Wellington,
around New Zealand are still giving netball to go at
some stage in their lives.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
Yeah, it's.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
I think for me because I'm in that secondary school space,
it's such a big an area where you can make
impact and I think if we can continue to grow
grassroots and netball at a community level, it's going to
filter through to the onwards and up with in terms
of the high performance space, where you know, we are
(05:54):
encouraging our young people to play the game, whether they're
female or the young young girls and young boys who
are playing, I think it's really really important that they're
able to.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
Be themselves and to enjoy the game at the same time.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
Yeah, wonderful And just heading into today, we're up to
round three already of the Preme competition.
Speaker 4 (06:14):
How's that the competition felt for you so far?
Speaker 3 (06:17):
Yes, it's I mean, if I put my Saint Mary's
head on, we're really happy where we're checking. I've got
a very young Saint Mary's College team with a lot
of year eleven, which is still exciting, and they're able
to end they're stepping up, which I'm really pleased for.
For Ari's it's still a you know, we're still checking
a little bit as nicely as possible. We're making inroads
every week's weekend out, So this game between both teams
(06:40):
is going to be pretty special but also pretty exciting.
Speaker 4 (06:42):
Too awesome, Well, Palasa, really cool a chat.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
Love hearing your passion come through and love the dedication
you have for the sports. All the best with the
unique scenario for yourself today and go well, all the
best for the rest of the season.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
Too awesome. Thank you so much, Adam.
