Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's look Super Rugby and the round opening last night,
so that the Hurricanes enhancing their title claim. So they
thirty eight thirty one win over the Crusaders in the Capitol.
The home side came out the better of a tip
for tat contest a double strike before halftime. Fair to say,
I think the decisive factor in the game where the
Hurricanes weren't given the chance to score tries out wide

(00:22):
like they typically have this season so far, but they
managed to find just a few lucky gaps, a few breaks,
score a couple of sneaky important tries which saw them
finish up with the seven point win over the Crusaders.
Let's recap the game and how things played out on
gold Sport last night. It was our commentary team of

(00:42):
Jason Pine, Matt Buck and Ross Bonds with the call.
Here are the match highlights.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
Crusaders two meters from the line in the hands of
Blackhadder muled hour is a meter short. They're going in
fighting A Nuku puts his head down and scores a try.
Crusaders on the board first. After a pair period of
sustained pressure and list of fighting on the goal for
the second game in succession, scores a try, and this

(01:08):
one puts the Crusaders ahead five.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
Deal with a kicker come one meter short? Is your safe?

Speaker 2 (01:15):
They go get either referee they change for the line
still there for the Hurricanes.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
They've been held up at the moment, right in the
shadow of the posts. They drive again. They're over in
score griefy bunny.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
Can they fee with the try? Hurricane seven five? With
a kick from in front, they should level it out.
Loff puts the big up and under out towards the
right hand side, where Moreby is. He challenges for it
with springer picked up by Proctor. He's off inside. He
goes to Larkye. He's up towards the twenty two feet
of Larcheye inside the Morby and Josh Morby's gonna go in.

Speaker 3 (01:49):
Under the stats.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
Out of nothing really Josh Morby his eighth try of
the season, and the Hurricanes fifteen ten ahead. With a
kick to come George Barrett on the ten middle line
fifteen and from the left end touch it goes towards
your safe down the tram tracks drops it onto his boot,
bouncing in over end. Royguard picks it up. Royguard stores

(02:11):
the try. The Hurricanes go bang bang at the end
of the first half, and all of a sudden they're
out to twenty two points to ten. With a kickta cup,
how it goes to Villi no room for that kick
towards the right of the post.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
Now in midfield they can go either way.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
Hothe them darts, hode them's under the posts well in
the manner of cam Rougar the little show and go
and Noah Hotham goes in for the try. Crusader strike
first in the second half twenty fourteen with a kickta
cup five meters short. Roigard little water top or topo

(02:48):
Hi and the Roserve Hoker for the Hurricanes.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
It is over for the try.

Speaker 2 (02:54):
Twenty nine plays seventeen with a kickta cum and Hope them.

Speaker 3 (02:58):
Goes in the midfield how early shifts it on right.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
A game really good suiting by the Crusaders, harvily involved.
Off the top of your card it brilliantly Bondi Raihanna
running the nice line.

Speaker 3 (03:09):
He's in under the post and they're back again.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Thirty one twenty two with a kick to come finanng
and R four has the ball and gets up again.

Speaker 3 (03:19):
It gives it off too. Is the ten siders in.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
A score again Faih Figur Young and Alfo, who's hardly
been seen, was involved at first receiver gave a little
pass off I think maybe to Lawake.

Speaker 3 (03:32):
He got it back and try number fifteen for the
season for.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
Fair heat, Fingy Young and aw four thirty sixth place
twenty four with a kit to cume. Now the Crusader's
off that scruff right in the shed of the post.
Preston gives it to Garda Dominic. Garda dives over and
the Crusaders ham scored a try right under the post
which they will convert. Thirty eight to twenty nine will

(03:57):
quickly become thirty eight thirty one. The Hurricanes have won
it and go four points clear at the top. Hurricanes
thirty eight, Crusaders thirty one.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
Oh, what an entertaining contest story living some of the
action there with the match highlights last night, some sensational tries.
I think my two highlights are probably the ones from
the two half backs, cam royguard ending up just the
first half with a great little individual effort pouncing on
a crusader's era and then that nuah hope of individual
effit down a similar end of the fields during the

(04:29):
second half of the Crusaders as well, five tries to four,
Reuben Love kicking at one hundred percent with all five
conversions going over a penalty to his name as well.
So yep, the Hurricanes will be delighted with that win
over the Crusaders to as I said at the start,
move four points clear at the top of the Super
Rugby ladder. Let's get some postmatch analysis here where the
thoughts of our expert commentator Ros Bonds right after full time?

Speaker 3 (04:52):
What will the Crusaders take from this? They'll take heart?
Will they They'll take a bonus point? Do you think
they deserved more? Do you think they'll think they deserved more?

Speaker 4 (05:02):
I think in the key moments late in that second
half they probably don't. In the first thirty minutes of
the first half they were outstanding, and then as the
game went on and they backed themselves to win from
any situation and they were able to score tries from
mistakes that the Crusaders made and they got punished for it.
And then the Crusaders went away from what they were

(05:22):
so good at and I just wonder about the rolling
of the bench, particularly at the breakdown following Uky when
he went off, they seemed to lack something. They took
Blackadder off what ten minutes into the second half, and
from there they really didn't have that physicality or the
I guess that the area that Jason Holland talked about
at halftime about where the Hurricanes were struggling was the
breakdown area and the loose forwards carref He came into

(05:45):
the game more and more as the game went on. So, yeah,
they can take heart, but I think it was one
that they probably will look back on.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
MESSI it probably sums it up pretty good adjectives.

Speaker 4 (05:55):
Yeah, I would have thought.

Speaker 5 (05:56):
So.

Speaker 4 (05:56):
Look, both teams will reflect on some good parts and
some bad parts. He had plenty to work on for them.
And I guess you know, the Hurricanes heading towards Moana PACIFICA,
I think there will be some players rested here. Some
takeaways from tonight's game. The wingers didn't get a lot
of ball. It was probably an Unhurricanes like performance, although
they did score tries from I mean broken play, but

(06:19):
a lot Hurricanes like performance that we've seen in the
last three or four weeks. Disappointment for Harbili and the Crusaders.
They were so good for so many parts of that
game and then disintegrated in the last ten to fifteen
and looked a little bit panicky. So yeah, home against
the Blues next week and it'll be a huge test
for them season on.

Speaker 6 (06:36):
The line indeed.

Speaker 1 (06:37):
So yeah, there were Ross Bahond's thoughts from the gold
Sport commentary booth right after full time last night. He
did mention and Unhurricanes like performance. They certainly weren't able
to get the ball out wide to the likes of
Josh Morby or Fachi Finia and off as we've seen
regularly through the season, he did get that try but
not scored, and that the fashion that we've seen a
lot of his ones through the season so far. Given

(06:58):
the Crusaders just don't give many times room to move
in that regard, and Couch Clark Liedlow reflected on that
post game.

Speaker 7 (07:06):
Yeah, they considers are no mugs. They're not going to
give you the game and just let us throw the
ball to the edge and let them run. You know,
they're the champions for a reason. I thought they were
tactically smart tonight. They played a game that tried to
get territory and field position, which is a smart ploy.
I thought the way we adjusted it halftime and got
way more direct and tried to go through a bit

(07:28):
more was encouraging. You know, maybe we could find that
solution slightly earlier in the game. But yeah, teams are
they're not just going to give for a head of balls. Yeah,
mixed fairly. We kicked too early.

Speaker 6 (07:40):
We could have chewed up.

Speaker 7 (07:41):
A space a little bit, maybe played a little bit
and then went to the air. We knew they had
a good long kicking game, you know, they don't kick
out often, and again, they're not going to try and
give us set a piece of tack of this. So
that's my poilot, learning to win in a different way
against a different opposition. There'll be there'll be some beautiful
lessons for us around. Yeah, how will we try and

(08:01):
get the territory when a teams trying to take away
from us?

Speaker 5 (08:04):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (08:04):
I got analysis from Clark Ladle, particularly saying the Crusaders
are no mugs. He's certainly not wrong there. The games,
there are a number of milestones across both teams, most
notably for the Hurricanes. Ruben Love celebrating his fiftieth match
kicking at one hundred percent. He spoke to our sideline.
I Matt Buck right after full time.

Speaker 6 (08:22):
Yeah, Rubin love, thanks mate for your time, thirty eight
to thirty one.

Speaker 3 (08:24):
You're happy with that, pleased to get a win. But
the jelland Derby wines are hard.

Speaker 5 (08:30):
It's hard to come by, like you can never take
up for granted, whether it's a win by a close
margin or a big margin.

Speaker 3 (08:35):
So I'm proud of the effort.

Speaker 5 (08:36):
The preside has challenged us in ways that perhaps who
had me challenged quite yet wide defense, a little bit spaced.

Speaker 3 (08:44):
Around the rock. So that's good, Broy.

Speaker 5 (08:46):
We got to keep finding waste of the win games
like that and happy were closed it out.

Speaker 6 (08:49):
I must to ask you what did you make of
all the kicking them the first half and even quite
a lot in the second.

Speaker 5 (08:53):
Yeah, new Zilla Darbies are smart brow putting teams in
the corners and all the kind of stuff.

Speaker 3 (08:57):
So beckfield coverage is very key.

Speaker 5 (09:00):
Like there are a few times here we were quite organized,
but you know we got great coaches and Corey Jane
and Justin Hollandlder didn't help us through that. And the
more the teams kicked us the ball and the more
chances to get to attack.

Speaker 6 (09:09):
So yeah, if tayl To scored this second last Troy,
you came back to halfway and in Dupe's place that
he says to you, all, you see what the sand's calm, Dan,
We've got this. Did you feel it throughout that whole game?
You were always a heat? Did you feel comfortable?

Speaker 4 (09:22):
Oh?

Speaker 5 (09:22):
You never feel comfortable in New Zealand, Derbies, bro, Like,
we just knew that if we and you don't Darbies
whoever played spis use the team that loses Baron. There
are some key moments.

Speaker 6 (09:32):
Therefore, you go back and watch.

Speaker 5 (09:33):
The game that we held our nerve, you know, justin
they could have gone either way at times, but you
know we had that kind of senseible feeling every time
we come out here that we can win war games
from no matter what the small line is. And yeah,
just the confidence within the groupers, it's very high and
we just want to keep backing our skills and back
each other.

Speaker 6 (09:46):
Speaking being comfortable and confident. Ruben, how are you feeling
a lot of minutes in the number ten Jersey? Now?

Speaker 5 (09:51):
Yeah, I was keep building and the biggest thing from
just keeping my body.

Speaker 4 (09:55):
It's best.

Speaker 5 (09:55):
Like can you are coming back from Indrey pretty early,
just trying to get that back still. And yeah, I
love playing team. I love playing with Hurricanes like my family.
So I'm glad of the coaches back me to do
my job and I just want to repay the coaches there.

Speaker 6 (10:09):
Thanks for your time on on tonight. Sorry. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (10:11):
One of the hardest working and most passionate Hurricanes players,
Ruben love there bringing up fifty games last night for
someone who's only about twenty five. Good milestone for him
in a huge cog and the Hurricanes machine, and one
for the future as well well. Another milestone on the
other other side of the field last night, probably not
one that he'll be looking back on in terms of
the results, with too many fond memories. But David Harvell,

(10:34):
he brought up one fifty. He spoke to Matt Buck
as well, one hundred and fifty games.

Speaker 6 (10:37):
David, congratulations first and foremost on that. Any summer up
your time playing in the Scrusaders Jersey.

Speaker 3 (10:43):
Yeah, appreciate the words, Mane.

Speaker 8 (10:45):
It's been a long journey, something will reflect on in
the next couple of days and as the week's gone.
But I spent a flue pleasure and yeah, tough one
to swallow.

Speaker 6 (10:55):
Tonight.

Speaker 3 (10:55):
I really wanted to get there one on the one
to fifty, but so proud of.

Speaker 8 (10:58):
The boys are way we stuck in it down by
two tries and fight our way back to ourself a.

Speaker 6 (11:02):
Chance first fifteen minutes. It's a lot of kicking even
late in that first half as well. But you looked
in control. You looked like you've come out, you had
a game plan and you're working beautifully towards it.

Speaker 1 (11:11):
Yeah, we did.

Speaker 8 (11:12):
I thought we stuck to our game plan really well
and it was just a couple of moments that let
us down a few kicks from now in the fall
and not being able to execute at times when we
needed to.

Speaker 6 (11:22):
Ethan Ethan Black added back tonight sixty minutes mass of
sixty minutes.

Speaker 8 (11:26):
Yeah, mess of shift meath and he's an absolute horse
in the front there and in the middle.

Speaker 6 (11:30):
So stoked.

Speaker 3 (11:31):
Heaven back and yeah, you look like home there tonight.

Speaker 6 (11:33):
It doesn't get much easier the Blues next week. Where
do you feel the seasons out At the.

Speaker 8 (11:37):
Moment, It's like it's on a limbo for us. We
need to get home and regroup and go again against
the tough Blue side and hopefully Chosh.

Speaker 3 (11:45):
Come out and support.

Speaker 6 (11:46):
Congratulations once again on your one to fiftieth go well,
you just appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (11:49):
David Harvey their post match and speaking of milestones, what
it was Dola c kd f's hundreds last weekend? It's
sleep around in christ Church? So those one hundred and
first match to beat the Crusaders last night at the stadium,
he spoke in the wake of the match. The Hurricanes
co captain.

Speaker 6 (12:05):
Firstly, do so congratulations on your hundreds last week. It
should have been here but it wasn't. What did you
make of that performance, Messy bar. We'll take it for sure.

Speaker 3 (12:14):
Excuse me.

Speaker 9 (12:16):
You know, we just had to revert to what was
working well for us and that's been physical and simplifying
our attack when we need to. So yeah, we'll take
that one for sure.

Speaker 6 (12:23):
Just back to Ruben Love, I saw you when you
came back after the Crusaders called this set in the
last try. You basically told the team just to calm down.
You felt you did. I get the feeling you felt
comfortable in that match and you didn't have to push
the pass and do that sort of stuff.

Speaker 4 (12:36):
Yeah.

Speaker 9 (12:37):
Absolutely, I wouldn't say comfortable was the right word. I
just say we've got enough experience and enough capability to
show some real composure in those moments, you know, when
the momentums shifted a little bit, but we're still in control.
There's no need for us to speed things up and
play into their hands.

Speaker 3 (12:55):
So that's all that message was.

Speaker 9 (12:57):
And you know, I'm proud of the group. We're so
well in the last last moments of that game.

Speaker 6 (13:02):
Your wingers getting the Bordom light. They seem to be
unhappy on those books.

Speaker 3 (13:05):
I actually I don't think they were.

Speaker 9 (13:07):
I told head to go and get the ball no
matter how, and what do you know, next time he
take next next play, he touched the ball and we
bloody score.

Speaker 3 (13:13):
So yeah, maybe that's a work on this week.

Speaker 6 (13:18):
Mine are PACIFICA next week. Mine in the PACIFICA next week.
Do you expect a few players to be recent.

Speaker 3 (13:24):
Ah no, no, not necessarily.

Speaker 2 (13:27):
I don't think.

Speaker 9 (13:29):
I don't think restles are right word. But I also
don't know what the coaches are thinking either. So you know,
if we think about holistically, the goal is to make
finals and make finals in a good position, and if
we keep that front of mind, then we're going.

Speaker 3 (13:40):
To make decisions. They're align with their congratulations tonight.

Speaker 6 (13:43):
We'll see you next time.

Speaker 1 (13:43):
Thank you, sir Deep to see Kitty for One of
the highlights of Hurricanes games is actually hearing his comments
post match on TV and radio. Always entertaining, always a
great read on whatever the topic of discussion is in
those postmatch interviews. So yes, the Hurricanes get the win.
Interesting last four games of the composition for them over
the next month. Two trips to Auckland back to back

(14:05):
over the next two weeks my Wana Pacific as you heard,
their next Saturday, then the following Saturday they head up
to Eden Park to take on the Blues. The weekend
after that, back home to take on the Highland Is
at Henry Stadium May twenty third for that one, and
then finishing the round robin with a trip to christ
Church back to the New Stadium to take on the
Crusaders on May twenty nine. So yeah, interesting past month.

(14:26):
They do think we'll see a very different Hurricanes team
named for Mawana Pacifica next week. They do need to
rest some of their guys like Fecki Finiaganova, who have
played every single game and he's actually started every single
game as well through the season. Hopefully might see Kinning
the Holo back from his injury next weekend against Mowana
as well. So that's where things sit for the Hurricanes.

(14:47):
Four points clear now at the top of the ladder
after they had the game in hand. So the Chiefs
in second spot a win behind. Yeah, great signs from
last night. Thoroughly enjoyable event.
