Speaker 1 (00:00):
We have a new voice to roster onto our weekend
(00:02):
sports spot, a familiar voice to many, saying Hi to
commentator Matt.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Markham, good morning, Look, how are we mate?
Speaker 1 (00:09):
Wonderful to have you aboard. Can you believe that Super
Rugby is back tonight? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (00:13):
It feels earlier and earlier and earlier every year, doesn't it. Yeah,
past Christmas and get through the middle of January, and
all of a sudden we're starting to talk about rugby.
Although the weather's playing at the moment, it does feel
like the middle of the winter.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
Sometimes we kick it off, maybe thankfully under the roof
in Dunedin tonight the Southern Derby between our Crusaders and Highlanders.
And I've had a quick glance over the team sheets.
I'm sure you have great to see the likes of
Leicester Fine and Nuku back from making some money from France.
But somebody I'm not seeing is our Dallas McLeod. I
mean you're a mefin lad. Do you have the lowdown
(00:45):
what's going on here?
Speaker 2 (00:47):
Yeah? Well we obviously saw Dallas four a half in
the preseason down on Tamorrow a few weeks ago, but
he's been relatively mia since he didn't play in the
second warm up mats. Look, I have a strong inkling
that the Crusaders are in a bit of a blessed
spot this year with a roster of very strong midfielders,
(01:08):
and from what I can see, Dallas is going to
have to work pretty hard to get himself into that
starting twenty three on game day. So yeah, as you mentioned,
guys like Lesterfying and Nuku comes back in. I know
he's on the wing tonight, but he's quite a capable
center as well, and you've got David Harvey in the
mix too, so they're pretty well stacked in the back line.
So Dallas, Yeah, hopefully we will get to see him
(01:29):
at some stage in the opening rounds and he can
solidify himself a spot and that starting team. Each week.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
TAB have the Crusaders going in a dollar forty two
favorites for the rest of the weekend warts reads the
late game tonight, more Wana pacifica Fiji DRAWID tomorrow, Battle
of the Bombay's Blues Chiefs. I mean, maybe that's got
a bit of interest to it, and then Forced Brumbies.
I know, aside from tonight, I'm not getting too excited
for round one.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
No, it's one of those weeks, isn't it. You sort
of sit back and just enjoy it and see where
teams are at. There's a lot of teams that are
probably not quite at their full roster. You look through
the Crusaders tonight, they're resting a number of key players.
No Cody Taylor, No Will Jordan. Then you even look
at the Chiefs. No Damien McKenzie. He welcomed his first child,
true well partner of this week, who was the daughter
(02:15):
incidentally of champion former jockey Lance O Sullivan. But the
Chiefs also haven't got Simon Parker or Leroy Carter. So
it's going to be interesting to see how things unfold,
particularly just to see where those Australian teams are at
Luke because when know we like to beat them up.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
Well, better to pair Rugby Western Cricket. The tee tweety
World Cup continues. Our black Caps on routes to Metabad
to take on South Africa Sunday morning. Aside that did
everything they possibly could to lose to Afghanistan yesterday, but
still one and two super overs. That we see the
most crazy plays from tournaments, like.
Speaker 2 (02:49):
They say, oh, it's just bizarre and you wouldn't have
expected South Africa, who had a number of opportunities to
win the match before we even got to the extra
stuff throw the towel to try and lose the game,
but they got there in the end. Look, it'll be
our biggest test of the tournament so far, I think. Obviously,
coming in off the back of a good ten wicket
(03:09):
victory the other night, he has our chance to stake
our claim as a leading contender for this title. I
suppose it'd be nice to see our name on that
T twenty trophy. I think the big match for me
this weekend comes Monday morning though, the old rivalry India
the Pakistan two thirty on Monday morning. That'll be a
belter of a.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
Match two thirty. Yeah, I don't. I think we'll be
brave enough to set the alarm there too early, but
we keeps the tail end. But no doubt something else
which is on this weekend and we are going to
get the man himself, the voice of the Coast to Coast,
Brian Ashby it around about twenty to eight. Lots of
mid Canterbury locals tackle this. Is it something on your
(03:48):
bucket list?
Speaker 2 (03:49):
No? Not something on my bucket list. The father in
law has done it five times. He's a lot madder
than me, but he's currently away with that group of
locals that are biking from one end of the country
to the other, so he's not doing the Coast to
Coast this year, but always look forward to the Coast
to Coast and mccannbury's got a really strong, proud history
(04:10):
with it, obviously through Brayden Curry. His brother Glen is
the race director, and always plenty of mccannerbury names scattered
amongst the entries and this year is no different. One
to watch out for Luke In the Elite woman's Methan's
Canna Lund is the name out for. She finished second
(04:31):
a couple of years ago. She's won the Open women's category,
which is the level below the elite and I see
earlier this week that mister Curry Glen Letter is the
race director, gave her a pre race ranking of two,
so she is expected to finish very highly up on
the podium and an outstanding outstanding athletes. She which is
a vent in methin and I've seen her pounding the
(04:54):
pavements and treading the tires on the roads and even
on the kayak not far from home, so she he's
been putting the hard guards and I'm expecting a pretty
big performance from here this.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
Weekend, and so humble. It was lucky enough to catch
up with her at the Salmon Run just a couple
of months back as well. Go well, Hannah and all
of our locals, and I hope you've taken a spear
pair of socks or two. Looks like it's going to
be rather damn
