Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's catch up with our friendly local optometrist, to Michael
Croft from Speksavors on K Streets and with a Halloween theme.
He was keen to talk some scary stuff.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Some real life horror stories from the world of optometry,
I guess. But the most common horror story that I
see is probably foreign bodies in the eye. So bits
of metal, wood, trees, dust, anything really.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
Well, they've been whipped up of light with last week,
with those high.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Winds, I'm sure it will be seeing a few more
foreign bodies there.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
Yeah, what's the most common one you see? You find?
Speaker 2 (00:35):
Yeah, in ashburden, I'd probably say middle foreign bodies inside
the eye, some middle shavings. We've got a lot of
people in that industry. And I'd say the next next
most common one would be vegetation, so that would be
people doing gardening jobs and things, trimming hedges and stuff.
Speaker 1 (00:55):
I've always said there's two parts of the body I'll
never mess with. Down there and up here, pointing to
my eyes. We we're looking, Michael, look at the eyes.
It seems pretty unforgiving.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
Yeah, it really is. And just putting safety glasses on
first is just such an easy way to avoid a
real life horrest story there.
Speaker 1 (01:12):
Yeah, if something goes in the eye and causes some damage,
can they self heal.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
Yes, the corny is very good at healing, but it
does depend on how deep it goes in, and obviously
we need to get it out of the eye first
as well.
Speaker 1 (01:24):
Man, you're giving me the shivers.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
If that ever happens, come and see us at specsaverors A.
We can dig that out for you.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
Amen to that. What else is on your spooky list?
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Yeah? Some other scary things that I see is from
people misusing contact lenses as well.
Speaker 1 (01:41):
What yes, so eedocent.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
What I see is lots of eye in fictions from
misuse of contact lenses. This would be like from overwear,
not changing them as directed, not using clean dry hands
when you're handling them. And sometimes even people don't use
the contact lens solution. Sometimes people use tap water, which
(02:04):
is a huge no no, what what's wrong with that?
Speaker 1 (02:06):
Save myself a bit of money mine.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
Tap water is great to drink, but there can be
some things in their nasty bugs, especially one that's really
quite bad called a kantha member, And if that gets
in your contacts.
Speaker 1 (02:20):
A scary word for scary condition.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
Is if that gets in your contact lens and it
can actually eat into the front of the eye and
it's very very difficult to kill. Eight yeah oh no,
big ulcer at the front of your eye, very painful
and very likely to cause permanent vision loss.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
Unfortunately, jeepers. That is scary and serious, but thankfully to
stay on top of any concerns for our convenience, Specsators
Ashburton is open seven days on Cash Street and for
just a couple more days until the first of November,
you can take advantage of a half plice axent. Go
and ask Michael and the team about that.
