Movie Man Joe Danielson vs Rockzilla

Bit of a change with Movie Man Joe this morning as we turned from the big screen to the big stage. He has a starring role in Variety Theatre's "Rockzilla" on at the Ashburton Event Centre for three shows only FRI and SAT. Luke asked Joe what we can expect.

Speaker 1 (00:03):
Following the success of Popzilla two years ago, Variety Theater
back with a new show, rock Zilla from This Friday Night,
bringing together powerhouse vocals, dynamic choreography, and the unforgettable anthems
of rock legends. Usually he would be in Talking the movies,
but we jumped next door for his starring role in
this Joe Daniels in the movie Man Hello, good morning.

(00:24):
Did you star in Popzilla?

Speaker 2 (00:25):
I did?

Speaker 1 (00:26):
Yes, So how's this one differ?

Speaker 2 (00:28):
So sort of runs the same genre.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
It's basically a medley of all of our favorite rock songs.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Couple of different subgenres in there as well.

Speaker 3 (00:38):
But yeah, it's definitely a good show to get tickets too.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
So that there's no story as such. It's just a
great mix of music.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (00:45):
Yeah, basically you just hit shuffle on the jukebox.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
Nothing to do with Godzilla or any form of reptile
either way.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
No, not in that sense, but it is quite massive
in that regards.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
So some of your fellow performers that have spotted the
lights of Eddie Galbraith, Matt Williams, who loves stealing the
show as part of the cabinet leads a few months
back as well, see in typical battle mode. He always
likes to make things a bit of a challenge.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
He does. He loves a good challenge.

Speaker 3 (01:15):
But no, he's just big, massive energies from both of
those two absolutely absolute rock stars honestly.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
And then you get a solo as well. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
you're not going to tell me what it is UKG thing,
but can you give us maybe an indication of what
kind of rock song it might be.

Speaker 3 (01:34):
I'd say it's a bit more like a grungy rock song.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
You'll definitely not when you hear the start of it.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
See you're not screaming your lungs out, no as such. No, well,
maybe a little bit there, okay. I'm also excited to
see that there's members of the Decibel's Choir. No doubt
they'll be in hot demand into the festive season. But
the lights of Taneil and whatnot performing a Bonnie Higher
classic in a cappella Yes, yes, so that's where there's

(02:03):
no backing track or anything. Absolutely that must be pretty cool.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
It was amazing to witness their greatness come out in
that song during a tech rehearsal on Sunday.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
Oh so was that the first time that you were
in the event Center on the big stage.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
Yeah, So Sunday was the first day that we're all there,
and we luckily got to be able to watch everyone's
pieces and.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
Ah, is that a retreat? Imagine for most shows off
and you don't get that chance to see everybody retreat. Yeah,
you've only had six weeks to pull this one together.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
A yeah, yeah about that.

Speaker 1 (02:34):
Yeah, so you've been in a few shows with Variety
over the years. That's quite tight.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
It's quite a tight turnaround.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
But thanks to the wonderful Jesse and the musically talented Joe,
we've been able to knock it out of the park.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
Yeah, right on. What's one thing in particular that you're
looking forward to serving up for people?

Speaker 3 (02:52):
Oh, I'm quite I'm really looking forward to the Bond
Jovi medley that we've got going.

Speaker 1 (02:59):
So that's like a whole bunch of their biggest hits.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
Yeah, yeah, one mega song, Yeah and one mega song.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
I like that. So the serving as a fundraiser as
well for Variety to put on next year's big show,
which is Footloose from Memory, Yes, correct. Yeah, have we
done the casting for that yet?

Speaker 2 (03:17):
No, we haven't had the auditions for that one. Yet
should be around the corner soon.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
So it's going to be a big one man, absolutely,
So here's a good chance to practice your moves, yes,
in preparation for that. Yeah yeah, Jesse will be whipping
you at the shape. So there's three shows only Friday
night seven pm and Mattine Saturday, which are rates two o'clock,
and then Saturday night also seven o'clock. Ticket's just fifty
bucks for adults kids thirty last minute option for maybe

(03:42):
an early work Christmas do or Halloween?

Speaker 2 (03:45):
Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
Are there's some scary Is there some scary stuff in
the show? Is someone rocking? Maybe like the Gene Simmons makeup.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
I mean it's not really Jeans Simmon's makeup, But if
you're not all into the rock genre, and it might
be scary for.
