Speaker 1 (00:09):
You're listening to a podcast from News Talks B Follow
this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
Emily, Welcome to the program from America. Richard Arnold, Good
morning to you.

Speaker 3 (00:20):
Very good morning, Andrew.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
We were all watching the Telly all over the weekend
the details of this incredible finding of the man on
the Ridge line, the airmen who'd been down two days
on the run. It sounded like the film Behind Enemy
Lines with Ian Wilson. It was incredible.

Speaker 3 (00:33):
Yeah, we're going to hear more of this too. It
really was a remarkable rescue of this edman who spent
so you say, a day and a half hiding on
that bridge after his fifteen was shot down. We're still
getting more and more of the detail. Trump's going to
talk about it tomorrow, so more to come, I guess.
But hundreds of military and insulgence folks were involved in this.
It was all very daring. The Air Force colonel who
has some injuries is out now doing just fine, says Trump,

(00:57):
despite the fact that he has some injuries this edmen.
Trump then followed this up with a news threat to Aram,
where the American President rode on social media and I
quote him openly effing straight, you crazy bastards, or you'll
be living in hell end quote. He posted this on
what is on this side of the dayline still Easter Sunday,
so his Easter message. But as to the rescue, this

(01:19):
was a life or desk tussle between the Americans and
the Iranian government, which offered a sixty thousand US dollar
reward if if they found the airman first. This airce
colonel was the weapons officer on the Air fifteen, sitting
in the back seat of the plane. The year pilot
had ejected at about the same point after the fighter
jet was hit. That pilot was rescued soon after the crash,

(01:39):
but the rescuers came under intense Iranian fire. A couple
of black Hawk helicopters were hit and an attack jet
also was shot down. They were yet to pinpoint the
location of that missing air and even though the two
bailed out at the same time, pretty much they could
have landed kilometers apart, says retired Rescue Mission Commander John Hilt.

Speaker 4 (01:58):
Ejection from a fighter jet is a very violent maneuver.
You've got to land on the ground and that may
cause other injuries.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
Yeah, No, doubt about that. Even though he was hurt.
The missing And managed to scale up to a twenty
one hundred meter ridgeline while he was being hunted by
both sides has hilt.

Speaker 4 (02:14):
You'll hit the ground and really then have to assess
a whole lot of things about yourself, about the where
you are, and then you know the first thing you know, survive, evade,
resist and escape.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
Well, he had a rescue beacon, used it sparingly because
the enemy can read those things as well. Finally, some
secret CIA technology here was used to spot him precisely.
Then the US military went into their diversionary tack. They
claimed the m And already had been rescued. Then they
dropped bombs to clear the zone. Hundreds of people were
involved in this rescue operation. They also fired on Iranian

(02:47):
convoys to keep them away. But there were more Twist
Ahead two C one thirty transport planes which were meant
to evacuate the m And and the seal Team six rescuers.
Two of those planes got stuck in I run, bogged
down in the sand, or hit with mechanical issues. We
don't know precisely is yet the US deliberately blew them
up so the Iranians couldn't retrieve them, then they sent
in additional rescue. So this was a risky and a

(03:10):
big scale operation in which no American troops were killed
or wounded. Still, it highlights the reality of operating behind
the enemy lines. Trump had said of Iran.

Speaker 4 (03:19):
They have no anti aircraft equipment. Their radar is one
hundred percent annihilate.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
Stil the fifteen fighter jet was taken down, as was
an eighteen ward Hog and a US chopper in all
of this. As for the Trump warnings, well, he posted
that profanity laced warning, saying Wednesday or time would be
a quote power plant day and bridge day. There will
be nothing like it, right Trump. Both sides have threatened
and hit civilian sites, bringing warnings of possible war crimes.

(03:45):
Fuel prices, as we all know, continued to spiral. Thirteen
US troops have been killed, ten as ready soldiers dead
in Lebanon. More than nineteen hundred Iranians are said to
have peri since the war began in more than fourteen
hundred Lebanese, while more than one million are said to
have been displaced.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
Yeah, Iran has been preparing for this sort of conflict
for forty five years, so they are a tough opponent.
You should never underestimate the image I see. Also, they
put a one hundred thousand New Zealand dollar reward on
the head of that airman, and so all of the
civilians and all of the military, we're looking for him,
and still he managed to get out. It's an amazing story.
Right to the Moon we go, and already they're at

(04:22):
the far side.

Speaker 3 (04:24):
Well, yeah, the closing in on the inspiring side. The
crew of Varnasa's Outamus two mission has been seeing a
bit of the far side of the moon, is there
Ryan capsule heads closer? Astronauts Reed Weisman and Christina Cook
is saying today.

Speaker 5 (04:37):
Absolutely unbelievable. This is incredible. It's much more obvious now
that one of those maris is a huge basin, because
it's just right now. It's kind of at the one
o'clock position. And I don't know the name of that
big one. It's basically just west of where Syrian Titus
and Tranklila Titus are, but it is. It is phenomenal.

(05:00):
And the moon we are looking at is not the
moon you see from Earth whatsoever.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
Well, looking back at our blue planet, the Earth is
in almost full eclipse in some of those images, including
one show in New Zealand and Australia. The closest lunar
flyby will come at around this time tomorrow. That's when
the four person crew will reach their maximum distance from
Earth at four hundred and six thousand, seven hundred and
seventy two kilometers away, give or take, as they continue
their ten day mission. They've also been setting records with

(05:28):
some of the longest distance interviews ever done, including one
with NBC and Canadian and the Group Jerry Hanson, who says.

Speaker 5 (05:35):
I know those photos are amazing, but let me assure
you it is another level of amazing up here.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
Yeah, well, no doubt about that, Andrew, absolutely and incredible.
How well the technology is doing, how great our communication is. Richard.
That's a fantastic story, and I thank you very much.
