Devon Conway: Black Cap comments on 161 run victory at Trent Bridge

The Black Caps have secured a victory over the English cricket team on English soil. 

They rounded out the series with a 161 run victory at Trent Bridge. 

Black Cap Devon Conway joins Matt and Tyler to discuss the game, and what a win abroad means for the team.

One hundred and sixty run victory at trent Bridge saw
the black Caps complete one of the great Test series wins,
fighting back from one down to take the next two
and bring the Crowthorpe Trophy back to New Zealand. It
was a massively eventful Test series for Devin Conway, who
not only brought up his eighth Test century, but he
also briefly flew home mid series to welcome the birth

of his second child with his wife, and Devin Conway
joins us on the line, now get a.

Speaker 3 (00:41):
Devon good Hey guys, thanks having on the show.

Speaker 4 (00:44):
Hey, congratulations on the second child. How was that flying
all the way home and then and then back again
in the middle of a test series?

Speaker 3 (00:50):
Yeah, chures, thank you. It was pretty tiring, you know,
it's a long way across the ocean. Very grateful though
that he's in acrect gave me the opportunity to sort
of it back home mid series. Thankfully we had a
nine day break between tests, so it gave me that
opportunity to meet the wee one, which was pretty awesome.

Speaker 4 (01:08):
Is awesome And what does this, when this come from
behind series when against England mean for you guys?

Speaker 3 (01:15):
Oh massively, you know, I think it's we certainly knew
it was always going to be pretty hard to beat
England in England, but going down one after that first
test of bounce back, winning a two to one was
pretty special. I think for four of us it was
certainly a real team effort to achieve that golf.

Speaker 4 (01:31):
We had a couple of big retirements during that series,
obviously Ben Stokes, but also Kine Williamson. How much will
he be missed by the team, Devin.

Speaker 3 (01:41):
Oh massively. I mean obviously one of the greats of
New Zealand cricket, you know, one of the senior guys
with the bat. Obviously we've seen what he's done over
a number of years. Is special, you know for the
group as a leaders and a guy to fall back
on to just to touch base with their things on
quite going away with the batch, just having that shoulder
to lenin just to you know, seek some advice and

(02:01):
some wisdom. You know, it's going to be certainly a
big figure missed unfortunately within the group.

Speaker 4 (02:06):
Yeah, it was a typically humble way for him to
go out, wasn't it. He didn't make a big deal
about it, but look, I loved how in the midst
of all the drama with the English team, you guys
just went about your work. What was it like being
in the middle of that, that big media storm.

Speaker 3 (02:20):
Yeah, it was pretty intense. I think, you know, it
all started happening towards the middle to the end of
day four. You know, I think we were watching it
and all of a sudden there was an announcement that
we noticed on the TV that you know, Ben Stokes
was playing his final international game, and you know, the
crowd sort of got wind of what was happening, and
you know, I sort of started to get behind him.
I think he was in two, you know, ninth over

(02:42):
at that time or tenth over at that time. So yeah,
it was it was a big afternoon to buy me
army obviously getting ready behind their team and Ben Stokes
in particular. So it was a lot going on. But
I think for us, you know, credit to Darryl Mitchell
for holding his nerves throughout the end the end of
that day's played to get us into a strong position
and then obviously what's ball in hand later in that

(03:03):
day sort of set us up for that final day
to get to win.

Speaker 4 (03:06):
How is Daryl mitchellite? So I saw some of those
he took a lot to the body.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
Yeah, he certainly did. He sort of wore for you.
I mean, that's just a testament to his character and
you know what he gives to the team. And I
think he's not the only one that sort of walked
away with quite a lot of bruises unfortunately of that
test but you know, you know, massive credit to him.
He's that sort of guy that when he's put in
those positions, he's one of the fighters of the team.
So you know, he was thriving in that whole situation

(03:33):
and thankfully did it for the group.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
There was a lovely moment right at the end of
the series where you know, yourself and and the rest
of the team gave credit to being Stokes. Did you
manage to have a couple of beers with the guys
after the series, Devin.

Speaker 3 (03:46):
Yeah, certainly, we had a few, thankfully before twelve o'clock
their curfew, So it was it was a nice moment
I think, you know, for being I think quite a
few of the guys within our group have played a
number of years against him, and I was fortunate enough
to play a little bit of RPL cricket with him,
so we've got a good relationship with him. So we
certainly had a few beers in our change sure, which

(04:08):
was really nice at the end of that series, just
to sort of catch up and send him on a farewell.

Speaker 4 (04:12):
New Zealand seems to have some kind of insane depth
at the moment, especially in bowling. All kinds of English
commentators have been marveling about how small our population is
and domestic competition is, and yet how much cover we have.
What do you think New Zealand and how do you
think New Zealand can keep just keeps just producing so
many incredible players.

Speaker 3 (04:32):
To be honest, I actually don't know. It's hard to
answer that question. I think a lot of credits got
to go to our domestic circuit.

Speaker 1 (04:38):
You know.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
I think it shows the level of players that are
coming through the domestic setup, you know, that are getting
opportunities at the international level and taking taking those opportunities
with both hands. You know, they aren't wrong in terms
of the fact that we have got a small player,
you know, call of players to pick from, but you know,
it's amazing what these guys are doing when the oportunities

(05:00):
are presenting themselves. So massive credit to the bowling unit,
you know as a whole. I think of six or
seven of them that really put their hands up throughout
that England series. You know, everyone had to sort of
stand up and pull their weight, you know, throughout that
series at the particular time, So it was amazing to
have everyone being involved in doing their job.

Speaker 4 (05:18):
We're talking to black Cap Devin Conways, so you guys
have a chance to do something only very few teams
have ever done, which is one a way to all
the Big three India, England and Australia coming up. Is
that something that's on your guys' sites.

Speaker 3 (05:36):
Not at this present moment. We know that that series
against Australia, it's still quite a while away. I think
quite a lot of those fast bowlers are certainly looking
forward to having a bit of a break and just
giving their bodies a bit of a rest. So but
it will be something that we will certainly look forward to.
We know we've got two tests against India prior to
that series that sort of puts us in a position

(05:58):
to do some real good prep work for that December
period against Australia Way, so we are looking forward to it,
but at this prison moment sort of like having an
ass break and just sort of switching off from the again.
