Speaker 1 (00:04):
Good afternoon. I'm Malcolm Jordan and this is your midday
news fix for Tuesday, the ninth of December. An offenders
still at large in East Auckland after two attacks on
a bus last night left one person dead and another
seriously injured. Police say the two unprovoked attacks happened on
the Number seventy six bus traveling from glenn Andis towards Ordacade.
(00:24):
The attacks were about ten minutes apart, with both victims
fleeing from the bus, but one suffering a fatal knife wound.
The offender ran off. Herald reporter Rachel Mayer has been
at the site of one attack. I'm at the intersection
of tunny Fast Street and Fenshirt Street here in glenn
Ennis and there's a large cordon in the area covering
a dairy and a liquor store. The National Dive Squad
(00:47):
has joined searches for a twenty three year old man
who disappeared in a lake near Auckland's Bethel's Beach yesterday evening.
He'd been in waste deep water at Lake Wainamu with
three friends about six pm, but after taking a few
steps further, plunged down and didn't resurface. The police, helicopter,
Search and Rescue and surf lifeguards began searching last night.
(01:09):
Fire crews are on alert as hot weather grips. The
North Island Emergency Services are urgently working to locate two
people who remain unaccounted for following an early morning house
fire in Foxton Beach, and one person's being confirmed dead
following yesterday afternoon's house fire in Auckland's New Lynn. Meanwhile,
conditions look to be favoring crews back fighting flames in
(01:32):
Tongariro National Park, now covering three hundred and twenty two hectares.
Thirty firefighters and four helicopters with monsoon buckets are battling
the blaze that began yesterday, exactly a month after a
devastating outbreak in the same area. State Highway forty seven
is closed between Highways forty six and forty eight. Fire
and Emergency Operations Director Brendan Nlly says the winds nowhere
(01:55):
near as strong as last time. It's going to be
hot as parts of the incident gram will be in
the mid twentin, so it makes it tough for the cruise,
but generally the weather conditions are favorable. And with high
temperatures are still hitting the country. GP New Zealand chair
Brian Betty says kids' bodies don't regulate temperature the same
way as adults. Ensure that we are giving them plenty
(02:16):
of fluids is really important, not allowing them to overheat
by putting too many clothes on or maybe covering them
up like we would in winter at night. Some welcome
news for the coalition with the latest one News variant
pole showing it out in front from a fifty five
percent majority, ACT leader David Seymour has seen his party
rise two points to ten percent to become the third
(02:38):
most popular party. It encourages us to keep our head
down and up, keep fixing what matters, and maybe there's
more reward for that. Meanwhile, Green Party co leader Chloe
Swarbrick isn't phased by the pole showing the Greens down
four points to seven. We are focused on addressing the
material basic needs of New Zealanders and maybe that stuff
(02:58):
isn't sexy. I don't know. To sport, christ Church's new
stadium has been awarded the first to all Blacks test
of twenty twenty six against France on July fourth, Auckland
will host two Tests against Ireland and Australia, while Wellington
hosts the other against Italy. Manchester United have beaten Wolves
four to one in the Premier League to move into
(03:20):
fourth on the latter Wolves remain last on the log
and winless. Wellington Phoenix defender Mandracer James will miss Sunday's
A League match against Newcastle through suspension. I'm Malcolm Jordan.
That's your latest news fix. We'll be back with the
next update at five pm from the news Talk ZB newsroom.
