Speaker 1 (00:02):
Good afternoon. I'm Malcolm Jordan and this is your midday
news fix for Monday, the thirteenth of April. It's unclear
how much backing Donald Trump has from allies as he
attempts to wrangle control of the Strait of hor Moves
from Iran. The US presidents announced his navy will blockade
the passage, stopping vessels permitted through by Iran. After twenty

(00:22):
one hours of negotiations with Iran collapsed in Pakistan yesterday
with no deal. The UK has reportedly said it won't
be involved, despite Trump telling Fox News he expects other
countries to assist with the blockade and mind clearing.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
We have highly sophisticated underwater minesweepers, which are the latest
and the greatest, but we're also bringing in more traditional minesweepers,
and so I understand, is the UK and a couple
of other.

Speaker 1 (00:47):
Countries confidence from the Prime minister that fuel will keep
flowing even with the Strait still blocked. Chris Luxon says
fuel companies and leaders of fuel refining nations are confident
in their current and orders. He told Mike Costing much
of our fuel comes from South Korea, whose refineries are
looking for other sources of crude from around the world.

(01:08):
We brought in on day one all the industry as well,
so we've had long standing understanding of where they actually
are and all their future orders and there's no risk
at all at this point around any of that. The
Health Minister has announced fourteen new cancer treatment in fusion
centers will be rolled out countrywide over the next two years.
Services will be expanded at fourteen existing centers. Simeon Brown says.

(01:30):
The investments supported by two hundred and ten million dollars
announced in Budget twenty twenty four to upgrade facilities on
the back of a FARMAC funding boost. There's around thirty
three new cancer medicines that's going to require I think
around thirteen thousand additional infusions each and every year. Businesses
are growing restless with politicians still not putting pen to

(01:52):
paper on the India Trade Deal. New Zealand First has
shunned the deal, so the coalition is reliant on labor
to ratify it. Business end Z has released an open
letter warning we can't afford to miss out on this
major economic opportunity. Special Agricultural Trade Envoy Nathan Guy says
exporters are dealing with global uncertainty and need parliament certainty

(02:14):
more than ever.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
India deal is so big for the New Zealand economy,
it shouldn't be booted around like a political football. We
need to get on, get it signed, get the momentum
behind it and get it through Parliament.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
The Emergency Management Minister says it's best to err on
the side of caution when wild weather is on the way.
After rattling much of the North Island, Cyclone Vayanu is
now offshore. It's left sections of state highways closed across
the Corimandal, Bay of Plenty and Te Tai Rafferty from
flooding and fallen trees. Mark Mitchell says authorities and the

(02:46):
public can't be complacent during extreme weather. I've got a
pretty low level of threshold for people that ignore warnings,
don't take advice, put themselves in a bad situation and
then put our first responders at risk. Fonterra has named
it Richer Allen as its new chief executive, succeeding Miles Hurrell.
Allen has worked in various roles across the Dairy Cooperative

(03:06):
and will take over next month to sport Rory McElroy
has joined Jack Nicholas, Sir Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods
as golfers to win consecutive Masters titles. At Augusta, he
finished at twelve underpar with a final round one under
pass seventy one, a short clear of world number one
Scotti Scheffler. Hayden Padden has returned to the World Rally

(03:28):
Championship podium for the first time in eight years with
a third placing in Croatia. And Yanick Sinner has reclaimed
the world number one tennis ranking from Carlos Algoraz by
winning their Monte Carlo Masters final in straight sets. I'm
Malcolm Jordan. That's your latest news fix. We'll be back
with the next update at five pm from the news
Talk ZB newsroom.

Kingdom of Fraud

Kingdom of Fraud

It’s the unlikeliest of criminal partnerships: a devout polygamist from an insular Utah sect joining forces with a shadowy Armenian tycoon from LA. The result - a billion dollar fraud conspiracy. In Kingdom of Fraud, investigative reporter Michele McPhee traces the origins of the extraordinary alliance between Jacob Kingston and Levon Termendzhyan. Together, the two men trigger the largest tax investigation in American history and weave around themselves a web of dirty cops, influential political relationships and transnational money laundering. All this is set against the backdrop of Jacob Kingston’s clan – The Order. A powerful and secretive polygamist organization in Salt Lake City. To whom Jacob is desperate to prove his worth.
