Good afternoon. I'm Malcolm Jordan and this is your midday
newsfix for Monday, the eighteenth of May. No word on
the future of the Witanngi Tribunal, which claims the government's
eraising its obligations. The tribunal is recommended the government halt
legislation weakening treaty clauses in the Education Act. The Prime
Minister has roundly rejected the recommendation. Chris Luxin says Maldi

Development Minister tam Or Portucka is looking at the future
of the tribe.

Is working his way through it. It's important that if
we're going to make any changes to the Waitangan Tribunal
in it's remits. As I've said from the beginning, when
you're closing out treaty settlements, you've got to question what
the role of the organization.

Meanwhile, Luckson says he wants to make sure that Kiwibank's
more competitive. In response to another New Zealand First campaign promise,
Winston Peters wants to buy back bn Z to merge
it with Kiwibank. Luckson says Kiwi Bank is growing well
and doesn't need this or another capital injection.

I just don't want capital to be a constraint on
their ability to go aggressively compete with those Australian banks.

The World Health Organization has declared an ebola outbreak in
the Democratic Republic of Congo a public health emergency of
International concern. Eighty seven people have died in two hundred
and forty six cases are suspected. Ebola is a highly
contagious and often fatal disease, and BBC correspondent Joe Inward
(01:22):
says the DRC is one of the world's poorest countries
with high density areas.

This is a really serious illness, but it's one that
you can, through relatively manageable steps, prevent the spread off.
We saw the health workers trying to go out into
the regions and get that message across.

And back here. GPS are calling for major health system
reform and investment ahead of the election. Gen pro's policy
agenda includes increasing funding thirty percent over three years and
lifting spending to match comparable countries. Chair Angus Chambers says
they're concerned about health New Zealand being so intertwined in
GP funding. We feel that the funder and the provider

of the hospitals being linked as problematic for getting investment
into general practice. A gold mine boss is brushing off
environmental concerns with its new section ready three months early.
Oceana gold opened the north portal of its Yhe gold
mine last week after gaining fast track approval to expand
operations in the Hodaki district until twenty forty three. The

mine beneath Coramandal Forest Park has been criticized by environmental
groups for the risks to conservation land, but chief executive
at Gerard Bond says the impacts are minimal with plans
for pest elimination and habitat restoration.

Construction of a new sea wall at the southern end
of Wellington Airport's runway is finally off the ground after

And North Canterbury's Bell Hill Winery has taken the top
spot in this year's Reel Review Winery of the Year.

It's left twelve spots to the top of the list,
the only Canterbury winery in the top ten. To sport
golfer Aaron Rye has won the PGA Championship Major by
three strokes at nine under par. He carted a five
under sixty five today. Warriors prop Jackson Ford has missed

State of Origin match against Queensland and Sydney next week,

despite sitting second in the dally M Medal standings through
ten rounds. And twenty one year old sailing duo Seb
Menzies and George Lee Rush have become history's youngest forty
