The Veils have a new album coming out this winter, and a tour to suit. Their singer Finn Andrews popped in for a chat about what it'll sound like and where they're going - it could be to a town near you!

Thanks so much for coming in. It's been a while
since we've seen you. You've toured the world since then. Yes,
how was the planet when as you saw it?
Speaker 3 (00:21):
The planet was? It's seen better days. But the shows
were great and we had a brilliant time. I mean
we went around Europe three times, I think something like that,
and I think I did a few shows in the
States as well, around New Zealand.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Yeah, that was the You think you did the States?
Speaker 3 (00:37):
Yeah, I remember, I think I did one show. But yeah,
we got to go through Italy again and we haven't
been there in a while. That was really really joyous.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
And the Italians they liked the Veils, the vibe that
you bring.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
The Italians loved the Veils and we've been that was
like the first country that liked us when I was
like seventeen, and we put that song Lavinya out. They
really took to that one. It's just such a great
place to toy, get fed fantastically, and you know, such
a great bunch. I love I love the Italians And.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
What did they feed you the best food you've ever had?
Speaker 3 (01:10):
You've just been some venue out in the middle.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
Of nowhere, mountains of pasta it is.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
Yeah, it's exactly what you want twenty minutes before you
go on stand.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
That's certainly bloated. Yeah, evan to sing your lungs out.
And so after Italy back in New Zealand, did you
find yourself yearning for some good Italian food and did
you find a restaurant or did you investigate cooking things yourself.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
Oh, I'm a big cook and I've become since I
having kids. I've done a lot of cooking these days.
I really love that, especially Italian food. So yeah, we
do a lot of that in my household.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
We're coming up to dinner time. What sort of things
do you prepare for the finno?
Speaker 3 (01:48):
I love making a good ragou slash, you know, bolonnaise.
That's my speciality.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
I would say, what's the secret ingredient? What's the special source?
Speaker 3 (01:57):
It's like lamb lamb cheek and new I can't, I
can't go into it.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
That's a family secret. It was that of the lamb chicken.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
Yeah, ok, yeah, that sort of thing. It's such a
love language that I love cooking for my children. It's really, Yeah,
one of my favorite things to do. Such a meditative process.
And you make it and then they don't want to
eat it, and that's.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
Well more for you lunch the next day or something.
Speaker 3 (02:26):
Yeah, yeah, I just end up eating all of it
over the next week.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
How You're going on tour soon, and we'll get to
those dates shortly. But first this new song.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
Yeah, it was. I mean, the record before this was
a very mournful, sad bloke at a piano kind of record.
Not to make it sound bad, but it was. It
was that, and we did a lot of touring of it,
and so by the end of that I was sort
of like, I'm sick of being this person and I'd
like to make something that's a bit more strident. And
(02:55):
I didn't really think this consciously, but I think that
song came out of that feeling of just like, Okay,
I want to make something sounds good when you're driving. Yeah,
that has a sort of optimism to it. Yeah, So
it's a good it's a strident, you know, good driving,
good driving song. That's what I was going for anyway,
perfect for this time of day. I think so.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
Yeah, all right, well let's chick it out. This is
the vals Lungs on Hodich. It's already a heard ich
that is new from the Vales. It's called Lungs and
we're lucky enough to have Finn from the Veils in
the studio with us now, Cura, thanks for bringing us
at tune oh pleasure. Yeah, you like it, and you're
(03:35):
taking that and the rest of the album that's coming
out soon on the road all over New Zealand this winter. Yeah,
and you're starting it in Dunedin.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
Well, actually Eric's has since we announced the tour closed
down unfortunately, so now we're now playing something called the
Pearl Diver. We're doing two shows in one night because
the venue is a bit smaller, so it's a good
opportunity to see us in a in a very intimate venue,
shall we.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
Say, two shows in one night.
Speaker 3 (03:59):
Yeah, we're doing like it's kind of slightly earlier one and.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
Then at or evening still yeah, I think it's still
the evening.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
I think it's more around the kind of five o'clock
mark something like that, and then a more traditionally timed
one after yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
And then from there you hung over the hills to
Wannaca the Lake Wanica Center.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
Yeah, haven't played that venue before, but that should be fun.
We've played in Wanaca quite a few times at the
Festival of Color, usually in that little tent thing they
put up by the lake. So yeah, there will be
a new new experience for us there.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
Beautiful spot there too, it is, Yeah, I sort of,
I do love it there, but I always I always
feel kind of uncomfortable in places with mountains around.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
I think it's like Switzerland or something. I always I
don't know what it is. I guess just haven't spent
much time places like that, and it's like objectively like beautiful,
but I always feel somewhat threatened by the landscape. Wow,
which is like rules out a lot of New Zealand
for me. I grew up in London as well. It
feels very foreign. I feel just like I feel like
(04:58):
I'm at the bottom of the sea over you. Yeah,
it's beautiful, but I generally, you know, hang around for
a day and then they.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
Even yeah you're beautiful though, of course, of course, and
then from there you're back to Auckland to play at
the legendary power Station.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
Yeah. I was just just talking to my cab driver
on the way here about that. He lives near it,
and we were talking about what incredible venue that is
and what an amazing history that place has. A lot
of the first shows I went to were there, and
so it's still still get that lovely buzz. You've played
there before, played it twice, I think now. The first
one was really amazing. It was during the COVID times
(05:37):
and it was one of like three shows happening in
the country, you know, so it was really intense and
we're doing that, we're playing our second record, Nuts in
its entirety, and it was packed out and like everyone
was just in such a you know, strange mood. So
that was that was really brilliant. One of the highlights
(05:58):
of my gig playing life.
Speaker 2 (06:00):
Yeah. Nice. And then you're going to fly to the
Southern Alps again. I tho you're okay with that? Yeah, yeah, yeah,
into christ Church and under the tunnel to the Loons
in Littleton.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
Yeah, lovely Littleton. It's where our drama lives and you know,
you just run into all of the New Zealand music
luminaries at the pub. It's a lovely, such a lovely place.
They're so jealous of all the people that just like
come from there and just if I yeah, if I
had some family somewhere nearby, I'd be so up for that.
(06:30):
Down there, very magical, magical town.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
There are a lot of musicians that live in Littleton.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
Yeah, they are, and they're at every bar you go to,
they're all there. How that works? You leave the bar
and you got a different one, and they're all there again.
It's like they followed you. Yeah, I don know how
that works.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
And then you're back up to the tron you're playing
at last place.
Speaker 3 (06:52):
Yeah, I haven't played the tron in so long, and
I was I feel like the trons through the turn
the corner in the last few years. And so I
went there and my mother moved there. Maybe that's what
it is. I had a great time, went to visit
her and went to the gardens, had a lovely meal
by that river is just so beautiful, So it'd be nice.
I think this is a I don't know if this
(07:13):
is a new venue, but it has a new venue
kind of vibed it a couple of years. Yeah, okay, Yeah,
So I'm excited about that, and my mum will be there,
so that's cool.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
Yeah. Great. Shout out to your mum when when you're
on stage.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
Yeah, I used to do that when I was younger.
I don't know if she likes it anymore though. The
last time I played the pastation, she stood front row
center and it was so off putting. I've had to
tell her not to do that anymore. Just literally, like
below the mic stand I meet her away from you. Yeah,
and it's all you can see because the spotlight is
that little. It's just my mom's slightly bored face looking

at me.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
I've seen this before.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
I've seen this so many times.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
And you'll do the same thing in Gus and yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3 (07:58):
True, Yeah, it's gonna be great. Can't wait to get
it out there.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
And then the world beckons once more.
Speaker 3 (08:04):
Yeah, back over to Europe in the winter, and I'm
hoping we might do some recording while I'm over there
as well, which would be fun and get the next
thing trucking along.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
Is there an idea in your head or what that
might be, or that's just too far in the future.
Speaker 3 (08:16):
Yeah, there is, I think already, you know, you always
want to rebel against the last record, and already I'm
you know, feeling antsy and wanting to try something really
different for the next one. And there's this sort of
aggressiveness to what I do have done in the past
that I think has subsided a little recently. I'm ready
(08:36):
to make a big racket again. So that's the path
I think we're going to go down for the next record.

Yeah?
